"History of Whitehorse Copper BeltThe first discovery of copper on the Whitehorse Copper Belt is reported to have been made by miners on their way to the Klondike in 1897. By 1899 the district had been well prospected and many of the presently known deposits had been staked.The first shipment of ore was from the Copper King property in 1900. This consisted of 9 tons of hand picked ore grading 46.4% copper. It was not until the period between 1912 and 1917, the production years of the Pueblo Mine, that significant ore shipments were made. Total production was 140,000 tons at 3.5% copper. An underground disaster killed six men and closed the mine in March 1917.Although the general area was dormant until after World War II, by 1947 geological mapping, magnetic surveys and diamond drilling had been done on the important showings. In 1954 Mr. Aubrey Simmonds directed the formation of Imperial Mines and Metals, which acquired by option and staking a large part of the Whitehorse Copper Belt. In 1957 Mr. Arnold Pitt reorganized the company as New Imperial Mines. With financing from Sumitomo and Toronto-Dominion Bank, a mill was built and production was started from the Little chief orebody by open pit in 1967."

Introduction Longwall coal mining in the US has steadily increased since its introduction in 1960. There are now 108 systems operating. (Sprouls, 1986). Advantages of longwall mining include higher productivity, improved safety, and greater coal recovery. Respirable dust, however, is one of the more serious obstacles to realizing the full potential of longwall mining. Early in 1980, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) initiated extensive in-house and contract research to identify and evaluate effective methods of controlling respirable dust exposure of longwall face personnel (Niewiadomski, Jankowski, and Kissell, 1981). It was found that several control procedures must be combined to assure compliance, using control techniques appropriate to the dust source. These techniques can typically be grouped into the following categories: reduction of dust generation; dilution of dust; capture or knockdown of dust; and dust avoidance. Control techniques can be divided into basic and effective dust control techniques; additional necessary controls; and optional supplementary controls. This information should allow longwall mine operators to select control methods applicable to their particular operations and to develop a dust control plan that meets Federal dust standards. Basic and effective dust control techniques There are three basic dust control techniques (Taylor and Jankowski, 1982) that should be implemented on all longwall mining operations. • A passive barrier or external water spray system design that confines shearer generated dust near the face and away from the operators. • Large quantities of water through the sprays, particularly the drum sprays, to aid in dust knockdown and prevent dust becoming airborne. • A cutting sequence that allows the shearer operators to work primarily on the intake-air side of the lead cutting drum. Shearer clearer There are some poorly designed shearer-mounted spray systems with nozzles directed upwind at the cutting and loading zone of the intake-side drum. These actually carry dust away from the face and upstream of the drum. Where, it mixes with the clean intake air (Fig. la,) and is carried out into the walkway over the shearer operators. Predictive maintenance (also known as ‘condition/health monitoring’) refers to the intelligent monitoring of equipment to avoid future failures. In contrast to conventional preventive maintenance, the maintenance schedule is not determined by a prescribed timeline; instead, it is determined by analytic algorithms, such as machine learning, using data collected from equipment sensors and/or via simulation.Predictive maintenance offers the following benefits for operators and equipment manufacturers:- reduces equipment downtime by identifying issues before failure, thereby enabling convenient scheduling of equipment service and extending equipment lifetime- determines the root cause of the failure, enabling appropriate service to be performed without utilising resources to determine a diagnosis- avoids the unnecessary costs of maintenance and unexpected failures- improves safety and product quality.Algorithms and data are critical to predictive maintenance success. Sensor data is first preprocessed using advanced statistical and signal processing techniques; it is then combined with predictive modelling techniques, such as machine learning, to estimate equipment health.Once tested, predictive maintenance algorithms may be used in an operational setting within an IT environment, such as a server or cloud. A prerequisite for good filter performance is that the total filter installation has been well designed. In this sense, the filtration testwork will provide scale-up data, and an insight into the relationship between operating parameters that may then be optimised, and used in the development of a control strategy. A good understanding of the filter’s operating principles will ensure correct selection and sizing of ancillaries, allowing in particular for the difference between instantaneous and average flow rates.

Upgrading of a low-grade titanium slag (~55% TiO2) with high silica, calcia, magnesia and iron contents has been studied using sulphation roasting technique using SO2/air gas mixture followed by hydrochloric acid leaching. XRD analysis of the sulphated slag reveals the presence of kennedyite (Fe2O3. MgO. 3TiO2), rutile (TiO2), calcium sulphate (CaSO4) and calcium silicate (3CaO.SiO2) phases. The residue after leaching contains mainly kennedyite, rutile phases and free silica with traces of calcium silicate phase. Synthetic rutile that has about 83% TiO2 can be produced at the optimum conditions. Thermodynamic calculations give rational explanations of the obtained results.

Mineral Development Agreements (MDA?s) are a cooperative mechanism in Canada by which the federal and individual provincial governments can coordinate their scientific, techno- logical and market development resources in order to implement measures designed to stimulate mineral exploration and development by the private sector; the objective, ultimately, being to increase the mineral industry?s contribution to provincial economies. In the latest round of MDA?s, which was initiated in 1984, a significant number of planned activities relate to industrial minerals. This paper will describe the nature and importance of MDA's in Canada and will outline the wide range of activities taking place with respect to industrial minerals.

Shotcrete (sprayed concrete) is generally applied at a thickness depend on the need. There is, however, considerable confusion concerning such support technology, and this paper attempts to clarify certain aspects, and dispel certain misconceptions and myths about the support membrane needs and advantages influence the thin membrane uses underground.

This research focuses on enhancing the synergy between blasting and primary crushing operations in quarries. A blast operation at dstgroup aggregate quarry in northern Portugal was simulated to fine-tune blasting techniques aimed at optimizing fragmentation indicators. The methodology involves conducting precise blast drill hole surveys, generating detailed terrain 3D models, and integrating these models into blast simulation software to enhance accuracy and optimize production efficiency. The study applies these simulations to test blasts, evaluating improvements in cost-effectiveness, crusher power consumption, and fragmentation efficiency using both aerial and terrestrial image analysis technology. The quarry key performance indicators (KPIs) guide the blast design simulations, ensuring practicality and relevance. The case study blast revealed that implementing optimum blasting techniques can enhance crusher throughput, reduce operational costs, and improve safety. This paper is part one of a three-part technical series where we aim to create a sampling procedure and establish a reliable baseline for the current state of operation. This baseline will be used in subsequent follow-up technical papers to make recommendations and improvements. The outcome of this study provides a framework for quarry operations seeking to enhance their efficiency.

To improve the ventilation of large-opening under-ground stone mines by using stoppings made from stone left in place. Background Underground stone mines typically use large room-and-pillar openings with little ventilation control. Stone miners may be exposed to contaminants that include silica dust, diesel particulate matter (DPM), exhaust gases, nuisance dust, and face shot (blasting) fume gases. The health risks from breathing these fine particles and toxic organic materials are well documented. Although contaminants such as dust or diesel exhaust can be some-what controlled at the source, the escaping contaminants are often diluted and removed from work areas using ventilation with minimal controls. In many cases, current mine ventilation practices use trial-and-error techniques to improve ventilation. The growing realization of the importance of a healthy work environment along with increased regulations will require many stone mines to implement new ways to improve ventilation. In-place stone stoppings are one option. Mine air flows from one point to another because of a pressure differential between those points. This pressure differential is established using a mechanical fan in conjunction with separations (stoppings) between high-pressure (intake) and low-pressure (return) airways. The separation of intakes and returns is an important concept that is used in most other types of mines. Normally, air moves through underground stone mines with minimal control technology. Fans are placed in locations where they are thought to be most beneficial, and intakes are not separated from returns. In a few smaller underground stone mines, proper ventilation can be achieved with a few strategically placed fans. However, as these mines increase in size, moving adequate quantities of air through-out the mine becomes harder, and separation of intakes and returns becomes a problem. Building traditional mine stoppings to separate the intake and return airways in entries with a cross-section area often exceeding 800 ft2 is difficult. The stoppings must be able to withstand both the dynamic pressure from face shots and the static pressures created by the fans. Construction and maintenance difficulties, as well as high costs, are the main factors preventing these traditional mine stoppings from gaining wide acceptance by the stone mining industry.

"Heath Steele Mines is a base metal producer situated near Newcastle, N.B. presently treating 3500 TPD of complex Cu-Pb-Zn ore. The ore consists of massive fine grained sulfides averaging I. 1% Cu, 1.6% Pb and 4.5% Zn.The original mill started in 1956 at 750 TPD and was successively expanded through 1500 to 3000 TPD in 1969. In 1972 an expansion to 4000 TPD was initiated. It was planned to obtain the maximum benefit from equipment and manpower by adding some process equipment, instrumentation, an on stream analyser, and a process control system. The benefits from this approach could be greater than normally expected, because of the complex metallurgy of this ore.IntroductionThe crushing plant is of conventional design with two 5 ½ ft, Symons cone crushers with the crushed ore screened to -7/8 inch on a 61 x 16 1 Al I is Chalmers vibrating screen and stored in four 1000 Ion bins. There are two para I lei grinding circuits, each one consisting of the following: one Rod Mill in open circuit, one Ball Mill in closed circuit with two 20"" Krebs cyclones, and one Ball Mill in closed circuit with three 15"" Krebs cyclones, Al I the Mills are 9' x 121 Al I is Chalmers Mills. The secondary cyclone overflow from each grinding circuit is thickened and combined to form flotation feed. The final product is 65% - 400 Mesh. Two regrind mills have been installed as part of the expansion."

Electric utilities depend heavily on coal as a major fuel source for power generation, annually producing more than 85 million ton'> of ash, boiler slag and FGD (flue gas desulfurization -"scrubber") materials as by-products. Utilities and others who burn coal have traditionally disposed of these by-products in ponds or landfills. However, in the last 10-15 years there has been a greatly increased emphasis on beneficial utilization of these materials by the producers themselves as well as by customers who purchase the by-products. Regulatory, cost and technical performance issues currently impact the use of coal ash and other coal combustion by-products (CCB).

LKAB’s Kiruna Mine, located above the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden, is the second-largest underground mine in the world today. The orebody is a world-class high-grade magnetite deposit, from which three raw ore products are extracted. We use mixed integer programming to determine a production schedule, i.e., which production blocks to mine, and when to start mining them, so as to minimize deviation from planned production quantities while adhering to the operational constraints of the mine. The resulting model contains thousands of binary variables and a commensurate number of constraints, precluding us from obtaining a schedule in a reasonable amount of time. THIS preliminary report from the Committee to Study Relations Between Students and the Institute is submitted to our member- ship for consideration and discussion before the general subject comes up for action at the Annual Meeting in February. At present, the A. I. M. E. has a dual relationship with mining students, each relationship in no may connected with the other. To the individual student the Institute offers for $2 a year a Student Associateship in the Institute which carries with it a subscription to MINING AND METAL- 'LURGY, a watch fob, and the privilege of becoming a Junior Member after graduation without payment of the -first year's dues, if one's application is accepted. To the student's college society it offers the privilege, upon application, of becoming 'an Affiliated 'Society, which brings with it no specific supervision or aid, and in turn requires no specific conditions as to membership, fees, or rules. This Affiliated Society is distinctly a school organization which Student Associateship in the Institute can he given special status or ignored, is the local .society sees fit.

Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining Co. is developing a full-scale pad injection program as part of the overall operational plan for the Valley Leach Facility. As part of the development process the mechanics of the injection methodology are evaluated in the context of physical injection measurements, outcome from geophysical monitoring, and gold leaching theory. The results indicate that hydraulic fracturing analogies advanced heretofore do not accurately describe injection phenomena in unconsolidated and noncohesive material typical of leach pads. A new interpretation is presented and extended to define operational strategies for maximizing gold production.

"In cooperation with The Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston, Mass., a survey was conducted in 1929 and 1930 by the United States Bureau of Mines to determine the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes and other underground openings owned by this company. The territory served approximates 650 square miles and includes 46 cities and towns. The transmission and distribution systems are on overhead construction and underground wires and cables run in underground conduits and manholes. There are 17,000 manholes on the system, and also an area in Boston proper served by the Edison tube system. These conduits and manholes are laid in various types of streets from the most modern type of cement roadbed to the older type of loose macadam. The conditions as found could be considered as typical of any public utility in the electric-light and power field. The survey extended over a period of about a year beginning in June, 1929, and ending in July, 1930, and during this time 1,765 different manholes were tested and a total of 4,068 tests were made.Previous to starting the actual survey, one of the writers, G. W. Jones, spent considerable time in Boston determining the best methods of practical· test procedure. In this work cooperation was given by John Campbell, superintendent, special service department, who for a number of years has been making a study of explosions in underground street areas and preventive measures in Boston and various cities.After this preliminary investigation the tests were continued by employees of the Edisun Company. Copies of all records of tests were forwarded to the United States Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Experiment Station so that the writers were in close touch with the progress of the survey, and changes could be made in the test procedure whenever deemed necessary."

Overbreak occurred inevitably in a tunnel excavation, is the main factor for increasing cost and period in tunnel projects. Furthermore the damage to the remaining rock mass related to the overbreak can give rise to a serious safety problem in tunnels. As a rule of thumb, causes for the overbreak are inaccuracy in drilling, the wrong design of blasting and selection of explosives, and heterogeneity in rock mass. Specially, the geological features of the rock mass around the periphery of an excavation are very important factors, so a lot of research has been conducted to describe this phenomena. But the geological rockmass classification for the overbreak and the method for decreasing the overbreak have not been fully established. Besides, the technical improvement of the charge method is needed as explosives for the smooth blasting have not functioned efficiently. In this study, the working face around periphery of an excavation has been continuously sectionalized to 5~ 6 parts, and the new Blastability Index for the overbreak based on 6 factors of RMD(Rock Mass Description), UCS(Uniaxial Compressive Strength) JPS(Joint Plane Spacing), JPO(Joint Plane Orientation), JPA(Joint Plane Aperture) and FM(Filling Material) is proposed to classify sections of the working face. On the basis of this classification, the distance between contour holes and the charging density are determined to minimize the overbreak. For controlling the charging density and improving the function of explosives, the New Deck Charge(N.D.C) method utilizing the deck charge effect and detonation transmission in hole has been developed.
