"Recognition of the diamond potential of the Wawa subprovince was initially determined from regional data using a kimberlite model. The world’s largest stable Precambrian craton, the Superior Province, is considered to be favourable for the emplacement of diamondiferous kimberlite. The Wawa area is located near the intersection of intra-craton structures visible in the regional magnetic data.The Enigma project is located north of the town of Wawa in northern Ontario. From field evidence and background research, it became obvious that in the Wawa area there were at least two potentially diamond-hosting events, Archean lamprophyric volcaniclastics and Proterozoic kimberlites. The host lamprophyric rock does not contain the classical KIM signatures. However, to complicate the Enigma, stream sediment samples within 200 m of the diamond-bearing lamprophyre produced a typical suite of kimberlite indicator minerals.The micro- and macro-diamond content of the Wawa lamprophyric volcaniclastic rocks is typically 0.2 ct/t to 1 ct/t, although it can be higher locally. The economic diamond potential of these Archean dykes, sills and irregular lamprophyre bodies is still under-explored (Kaminsky, 2002, unpubl.). Oasis Diamond Exploration is currently exploring the area using geophysical, geochemical, and geological data."

Current machine learning models used for roof fall hazard prediction are mounted on expensive sensors, computationally expensive, or lack the robustness for accurate prediction in the underground mining environment. This research aims to provide a design methodology for a robust, low-cost, deep learning-based algorithm for underground mine roof fall hazard prediction. A data sampling plan is developed to ensure the replicability and robustness of the developed model. In addition, feature engineering and transformation methods are described to identify relevant features for hazard identification. The methodology described here will be used in model development, tested, and implemented as a real-time mobile device application. The new tool will be expected to detect roof fall hazards in real-time and contribute to a crowdsourcing approach for underground hazard detection.

Pre-excavation grouting is a predictable and reliable technique performed to prevent or minimize settlement in advance of, or during the tunneling operation. It safeguards the infrastructure above the tunnel alignment. Cement based suspension grouts and sodium silicate based grouts are frequently injected to consolidate and strengthen the formation and create a reinforced canopy above the tunnel trajectory. Grouting is typically performed through permeation and permeation in conjunction with hydrofracturing. Multiple injection passes through steel sleeve pipes are ideal, since they create an effective forespiling system to facilitate tunneling without causing unacceptable settlement, even with minimal overburden thickness. Ten pre-excavation grouting projects performed in the North America are discussed in this paper.

"A fundamental aspect in the development of any open-pit mining project is the determination of the mineable mineral reserves, obtained with the design of the so-called ultimate pit limits. In this paper, firstly the Vulcan software applied over the data of MR phosphate deposit will be introduced. Modeling of the ore deposit has been done by geostatistical and conventional methods by using geological data of 41 diamond core samples. Insitu geological reserves were estimated to a level of accuracy to support detailed mine planning. Ore body has been divided into regular three dimensional fixed blocks. The ultimate pit limits of the model deposit weredetermined by the vulcan program by an optimizing technique. Additionally, the approximate location of the deposit and drillholles and the contour map of the ultimate pit limits generated by the vulcan program are presented. "

METALLURGICAL thermochemistry of titanium is a broad subject and (if data were available) could include a wide variety of topics. The present report is restricted to extractive metallurgy and to substances and reactions that bear upon the magnesium, sodium, and hydrogen-reduction processes employing titanium tetrachloride. The aim has been to present enough data so that the reader not only can check: the calculations for the reactions discussed but also can conduct related calculations if he so desires, without recourse to other compilations of data. The subject matter divides naturally into two parts-the selection of the data to be adopted and the application of these data to pertinent metallurgical reactions.

Recent drilling programs have shown that the in-situ coal resources of Nova Scotia are very substantial. The grand totals of the measured, indicated and inferred categories amount to 232 m, 646m and 993 m tons, respectively. This vast quantity of coal occurs essentially in five main fields: Sydney, Mabou, Port Hood, Pictou and Springhill. The largest resources (84% of the total) occur in the submarine area of the Sydney coalfield. With a 65% recovery rate, there are at present 150m tons of proven, recoverable coal in Nova Scotia. At a predicted maximum annual production of 5 m tons, this amount equals a lifespan of 30 years. However, additional drilling, particularly in the Sydney offshore area, holds promise of increasing the recoverable reserve tonnage to at least 350 m tons. This figure may be compared with the 484 m tons production obtained during 191 years of mining (from 1785-1976). The geological appraisal of the remaining coal resources in the five fields mentioned is presented in three-dimensional diagrams, per individual seam and corresponding reserve area. In addition, the submarine extensions of the Sydney and Mabou coalfields are discussed in light of results obtained from off shore oil exploration wells. The terminology and standards of coal resource calculations are pointed out, and the phenomenon of seam splitting and its prediction from geological data is illustrated. The availability in Nova Scotia of either thermal or metallurgical coal is considered in relation to rank and sulphur content. This paper was presented in June 1977 at the 90th Annual Meeting of the Mining Society of Nova Scotia. The coal resource estimates, however, have been updated to include the results obtained with the offshore drilling in the Sydney Coalfield to November 1977.

(approx.) 25° 45' S.; long (approx.) 149°, drilling was done by Drillers limited (subsidiary Oil Search) to a depth of 4688 ft., to the Lower Permian(?). There were small gas showings. The hole mas abandoned. At Mt. Bassett, lat (approx.) 26" 20' S.; long. (approx.) 149", Roma Blocks Oil Co. No Liability drilled to a depth of 4033 ft. The hole bottomed in granite. There were small showings of' oil and gas above bedrock in what may be Permian but is not yet determined. The company intends to run a formation tester. New South Wales.—At Kulnura, lat. (approx.) 33" S., long (approx.) 151°, the Kamilaroi Oil Company Ltd. (subsidiary of Oil Search Ltd.) drilled to a depth of 6293 ft. The Permian, probably Upper Marine Series, was reached. Drilling is to continue. Victoria.—At Romawi, lat. (approx) 37" 50' S., long. (approx.) 147" 45', a dry hole 3246 ft. deep bottomed in the Jurassic and was abandoned. It was drilled by the Governments of the Commonwealth and the State of Victoria. At Lakes Entrance, 1st. (approx.) 37" 50' S.; long. (approx) 748", a small showing of' oil (a few pints a day) was obtained from a well drilled 1275 It., to the Upper Oligocene-Glaucnnitc series, by the Austral Oil Drilling Syndicate, No Liability. Future Drilling Preparations is are being made by companies fur further test drilling in 1939, and the Governments of the Common wealth and the State of Victoria are continuing test holes for information only in the Gippsland district of Victoria. In Papua and New Guinea, no test drilling was done in 1938, but several companies are carrying on geological investigation and it is expected that, some test holes will be drilled during 1939.

The Flash Converting Furnace at Kennecott Utah Copper converted over 465kmt of high-grade matte in 2002 but was restricted due to low matte production to 395kmt in 2003. This paper presents updated operational performance data and describes improvements implemented since the mid 2001 rebuild. Matte burner feed distribution, silica and arsenic impacts on settler lime-based slag operability, blister laundering, uptake/boiler accretion control, and dust sulfation will be discussed, as well as current development requirements dictated by operational imperatives and furnace modification plans.

As this paper is written, the only method for the commercial production of lithium metal is by the fusion electrolysis of LiC1-KC1 mixtures, as first proposed by Gunkz.2 The details of the industrial process have not been made public hut Osborg8 stated that an efficiency of more than 90 pct is obtained with a lithium metal recovery above 95 pct and that the metal is 99.5 pct pure. Pletenev9 gave a power consumption of 66 kw-hr per kilogram of lithium metal produced with a salt consumption of 9 kg of LiCl and 0.4 kg of KCI. Pletenev's figures indicate a somewhat lower recovery than that given by Osborg. In a recent report on' German lithium plants, Motock7 gives figures that are also less favorable than those reported by Osborg. At the German plants the lithium recovery in electrolysis was only 83.4 pct, with a power consumption of 140 kw-hr per kilogram of lithium. The metal averaged only 97 pct pure, with sodium and potassium as the chief impurities. The presence of SO2, SO3, SiO2, Ba, Ca, and appreciable amounts of Na and Fe2O3 were especially disturbing in the electrolysis, and it was necessary to run the cell for some time to eliminate most of these impurities and condition the bath. It may be noted here that most of these impurities do not interfere with a thermal reduction process. These facts show that the present method of producing lithium is fairly efficient and would suggest that other methods could not compete. However, fusion electrolysis has certain drawbacks, such as the necessity of supplying costly, low-voltage direct current and of collecting and processing the anodic chlorine if it is not to be wasted. An even greater disadvantage is that lithium chloride must be used for an electrolyte. It is one of the most expensive salts of lithium, since it cannot be produced in anhydrous form by precipitation from aqueous solution, as is done with LiF or Li2CO3. The reduction of lithium by a vacuum process similar to the ferrosilicon method for the production of magnesium would have certain advantages. Small units such as Pidgeon retorts, would give flexibility of production to meet demand, and a small plant would require moderate capital outlay. There is a possibility of using idle Government-owned magnesium plants for such purposes. The raw materials needed for vacuum thermal reduction would not have to be extremely pure, Director, with respect to the iron and calcium Content. "The deposition of copper on inert substrate depends on the number of active sites that will react at certain overpotential. The critical overpotential depends on surface morphology, surface film resistance and additives on cathode surface. The effects of surface properties on copper nucleation and growth rates were studied for used stainless steel blanks from several tankhouses. The surfaces of the blanks were characterized with electrochemical and mechanical methods. Electrochemical deposition tests were done at current density of 300 A/m2 for 10, 30 and 60 seconds. The nucleation density and copper coverage were estimated using image analysis. The surface film resistance did not correlate with copper growth. Increasing surface roughness correlated with lower copper growth.IntroductionStainless steel cathode blanks in copper electrorefming are usually made of AISI 3 I6L type steel. They have a typical lifetime over 10 years. During use the surface will collect deposits and become rough due to wear and corrosion. These factors can affect the nucleation and growth of copper. The nucleation and deposition of copper on inert substrate depends on the number of active sites that will react at certain overpotential. The critical overpotential can depend on surface film resistance, surface morphology, and additives adsorbed on cathode surface.The deposition potential of metallic ions on a foreign substrate is usually higher than the deposition potential on the electrode made of the same metal due to crystallographic substrate/metal misfit [I]. If the substrate has traces of the depositing metal they will be preferential growth sites. For a smooth deposit a large number of simultaneous nuclei is necessary. However, excessive nucleation density can lead to porous deposits [2]. Surface films of good conductivity are needed for dense nucleation and small nuclei. On cathode blanks the number of active sites increases with increasing surface film conductivity [3-5] and/or surface film porosity [6]. On AISI 3 I6 L stainless steel a more resistive oxide has been found to limit favourable sites for copper nucleation and more conductive film promoted high-density copper nucleation [7]. Also Urda-Kiel et al. have concluded that thicker oxide layers on AISI 304 stainless steel resulted in lower nucleation [8]. Increase in overpotential or current density activates more and more of the potential nucleation sites and this can be seen as higher number of nuclei [9] or smaller average distance between nuclei [10]."

Introduction The post World War II nuclear arms race and interest in nuclear power generation resulted in a significant demand for uranium in the 1950’s. This led to the development of uranium solvent extraction technology and uranium became the first metal to be recovered on a large scale by solvent extraction (SX) (1), interestingly more than 100 years after the extraction of uranium from an acid nitrate solution using diethyl ether was first reported by Peligot.(2) For a variety of reasons discussed elsewhere (3,4) there have been upheavals in the supply demand picture and price for uranium since the 1960’s. (Figure 1) The low price of uranium from the mid 1980’s until 2004 resulted in a depression of new resource exploration and mine development along with uranium mine / mill closures and decommissioning. People with skills in uranium processing could not find suitable employment and many experienced engineers and metallurgists took jobs elsewhere or retired. This resulted in a significant brain drain with respect to uranium processing technology.

Lignin, the second most abundant natural polymer and bi-product of the pulp and paper industry, has been commercially available in a number of forms since 1940. This growing industry is fueled by demand in traditional applications. Reagents that offer unique solutions in various mineral process applications are examples of advanced uses that also fuel growth. These applications include flotation reagents in fluorspar, bastnäsite and potash, as well as in the zinc pressure leach process. Due to the fact that no concerted effort has been made to find applications for modified lignosulfonates, it is quite possible that this natural material will find use in other benefication processes.

Gold-on-carbon catalysts resulted very active and selective in liquid phase oxidation [1, 2, 3] and during past studies we established that activity is ruled by two factors: particle dimension and gold exposure on the carbon surface [4]. These two parameters are also connected to the nature of activated carbon where the chemical nature of the surface oxygenated groups probably plays an important role [5]. Our studies, focused on the design of an active gold-on-carbon catalyst for liquid phase application, were aimed, operating a fine tuning of all the parameters involved in determining activity, to optimize gold-on-carbon preparation, keeping in mind that gold particle activity increases with decreasing particle size and increasing gold exposure. Gold sol immobilisation represents a versatile methodology in preparing gold catalysts [6]: throughout this work we used as sol stabilizing agent, the N-dodecil-N,N-dimethyl-3-amino-1-propan sulphonate (SB), that provides both sterical and electrostatic stabilisation, a condition we already demonstrated necessary to preserve particle dimension when carbon is used as the support [6]. We generated different gold sols by varying the relative amount of reagents (HAuCl4, SB, NaBH4), the type of alkali and the temperature of the gold precursor reduction. Moreover, as we had recently evidenced that there is also a carbon effect [5], we employed only one active carbon to immobilize the sols.

Dawsonite-bearing oil shale of Colorado's Green River formation offers a unique and vast (more than 5.9 Gt of A120 j) resource of easily extractable alumina. The processing methods required by the thermal reactions of dawsonite and its oil-shale carrier also require production of shale oil, soda ash, and nahcolite as marketable coproducts. These production methods are presented. The alumina production process is contrasted with the Bayer process to describe technical advantages of extraction of alumina from oil shale which may offset the problems associated with processing a relatively lean ore. While alumina production from oil shale requires development of new technology, the technical problems appear solvable. Only the political problems arising from the now onerous and completely unnecessary federal oil-shale withdrawal appear less solvable.

Viscosities of industrial lead slags with various compositions were measured as a function of temperature using a Brookfield viscometer. Based on the experimental data from this study and other investigations reported in the literature, an expression has been developed to correlate the viscosities of lead silicate slags as functions of composition and temperature. The effect of each individual slag component on the variation of the slag viscosity is identified. The composition dependency of viscosity of lead silicate slags is discussed. The calculated results using this viscosity expression are in good agreement with the measured data.

This report describes a variety of coal mine lighting projects which were funded by the Bureau of Mines in order to obtain underground lighting experience in support of new lighting requirements for underground coal mines. Low coal and high coal, narrow and wide entries, conventional and continuous mining, ac and dc power, bituminous and anthracite, and machine mounting and area lighting were some of the variables covered in this program. Also evaluated was the OCENCO fluorescent caplamp.

A hypothetical economic model has been developed for diamond projects in the Canadian Arctic using data from recent exploration and mining projects. The model reflects economic conditions as it applies to the diamond mining industry in the Canadian Arctic at the present time. The economic model captures pre-production expenditures, production data, and post-production costs. Before- and after-tax cash flows are derived from the data along with the relevant economic criteria. From the corporate perspective, the model provides guidance as to the minimum size and/or in-situ value per tonne requirements of targets being sought in order to ensure economic success and probable exploration and development expenditures. From the government perspective, the model provides an indication of income and mining tax revenues that can be expected from a particular diamond project. The model shows, on average, diamond projects in the Canadian Arctic are expensive to explore for and develop, but are economically robust. They generate great economic return for mining companies and significant amounts of tax revenue for governments. The fact that diamonds can be transported directly from the mine site by air makes them particularly attractive targets for mining companies that operate in the Canadian Arctic.
