Controlling natural-water drives to effect efficient and economic production of petroleum, through wells, from reservoir sands and rocks is a problem of major importance in the oil-producing industry. Water-drive fields are characterized by large quantities of mobile water under high pressure immediately below the oil in the flanks or extraneous parts of reservoir formations, Hence, the water, which is in fluid connection with the oil and a source of a large proportion of the energy available for moving it, advances up-structure to replace it. This phenomenon of water moving crestward into the oil-bearing parts of the reservoir and replacing oil is termed edgewater encroachment. The mechanism by which oil is flushed out and continually replaced by water as the hydocarbon content of the field is depleted must be understood if natural-water drives arc to be used successfully to, induce efficient recovery of oil from its reservoir rocks. Until recently, the function of water in the production of oil has been somewhat obscure and was not given the consideration it deserved in early petroleum production-research programs because of the greater importance associated with and the effort devoted to investigations concerning the relations of natural gas to production of oil. Thus, with virtually no fundamental information at hand, it is not surprising that at first edgewater was considered a necessary evil, and the manner in which it was dealt with depended largely on the experience of the operators. During the intervening years, however, practical information on encroachment of edgewater in oil sands has been widely disseminated as a result of studies of oil-field depletion, and many theories pertaining to petroleum-reservoir energy and performance have been advanced; these theories necessarily included consideration of edgewater as an integral -art of the reservoir fluids and a source of energy for propelling hydrocarbon fluids through the reservoir and to the surface of the ground.

The objectives of this effort were to: 1) Develop and validate start-of-shift operational inspection procedures to be used by operators of mobile, self-propelled equipment used in surface mining operations; 2) Evaluate user acceptance of the developed procedures; and 3) Recommend methods and media for presentation of the developed procedures to the user population. Mobile, self-propelled surface mine equipment requiring start-of-shift inspection was identified. Subsystems amenable to operational inspection were identified. The procedures addressing all safety critical subsystems on each equipment type were then developed and validated. The inspection procedures developed were those that could be performed largely from the operator's station. User acceptance was evaluated during on-site data collection visits to surface mines. Representatives of the user population reviewed the procedures and were then interviewed. Recommendations for the methods and media of presentation to the user population were developed from information obtained in: 1) Review and analysis of instructional technology literature applicable to this area; 2) On-site data collection; and 3) Analysis of the working environment and characteristics of the user population.

In the present study, we have investigated the conditions for the formation of bubble clusters and the effect of well-defined agitation on the stability of clusters. A specially designed cell was used in which bubble clusters could be formed at the surface of a porous block in a fluidized bed of relatively coarse hydrophobic silica particles. The clusters then rose through a flow field of known turbulent characteristics. The size of the clusters before and after passing through the turbulent zone were measured using a high speed camera. The influence of shear rate on the deformation of the bubble clusters was investigated. The results showed that the Kolmogarov microscale was much smaller than the maximum cluster size, suggesting that the breakage of the clusters was mainly due to interaction with clusters in the inertial convection sub-range.

Conventional methods for selecting a production plan for an open pit mine is based on the assumption that ore grades throughout mine life as well as market variables are known with certainty. Another important issue that is also being ignored in the conventional procedure is the value of management flexibility to revise operating policy with time according to the arrival of new information. Based on this oversimplification of reality, an optimum mine plan that is thought to be maximizing net present value (NPV) of the project is selected. Given the multiple sources of risk affecting the estimated NPV, there is a high probability that the actual value will be different from that estimated. This could mislead decision making process regarding selecting an optimum mine plan. This paper proposes a multi-criteria ranking system for selection between alternative mine designs under both geological and market uncertainties. The system is based on integrating multiple market and geological uncertainties as well as the operating flexibility to revise the ultimate pit limits using a Monte Carlo-based real options valuation (ROV) model. To compare the methods, the article applies the proposed system, along with the conventional NPV-based method, to rank possible mine designs for a copper and a gold mine. It has been found that, considering multiple risk analysis measures while integrating uncertainty and operating flexibility results in selecting a mine design that is different from that selected by the conventional method.

Essa perda de ductilidade a quente pode ser severa e causar interrupções no processo produtivo. Esse fenômeno pode estar associado a diversos fatores entre eles: composição química do aço; defeitos presentes no tarugo; condições do processo de laminação; e temperatura do aço durante o processo, principalmente nos passes de desbaste e intermediários de laminação. No processo em estudo, a perda de ductilidade a quente ocorre associada à laminação de vergalhões a partir de tarugos oriundos diretamente do lingotamento contínuo. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar a influência da temperatura e da microestrutura formada ao longo do processo na perda de ductilidade a quente das barras através de um exame comparativo entre os vergalhões laminados com e sem o uso da etapa de reaquecimento.

Changes in the 1980 quantity and value of the sales of various natural abrasives, compared with the data for 1979, were of a mixed nature. Output of garnet and special silica stone products increased in both tonnage and value during the year, while emery and tripoli-type materials production decreased in both tonnage and value. The reported quantity and value of sales of manufactured abrasive material-fused alumina and alumina-zirconia, silicon car-bidet and metallic iron and steel shot and grit-also decreased for 1980. Mining at Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting's Snow Lake Division is now in the mature stage of the mines' lives. These base metal copper-zinc mines have been operating for more than 30 years. Stopes had small pillars called "crown pillars" left between them. These pillars range up to 100 m (330 ft) long by 40 m (130 ft) wide and 15 m (50 ft) thick. Hudson Bay have been successful in removing these pillars by using cable slings, electric scoops, longhole mining and diesel load-haul-dump equipment. The different shapes and sizes of these pillars has required that many innovative techniques be tried in order to find acceptable economic mining methods. An overview of the different methods will be outlined. Background Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting's Snow Lake Division is located in Manitoba some 800 km (500 miles) north of Winnipeg and 200 km (125 miles) by road from the Hudson Bay smelter complex located in Flin Flon, Manitoba (Fig. I). There are currently three producing underground mines and one open pit operating at the Snow Lake Division, producing copper and zinc concentrates. Pillar recovery is intensive and vital to continued production of these mature mines. The crown pillars are producing more than 50% of the current mine production. This figure will increase in the future. The two mines at which crown pillar recovery is taking place and that will be discussed are the 400 t/d (440 stpd) Rod Mine and the 1000 t/d (1100 stpd) Stall Lake Mine, both five-day-a-week producers. Crown pillar mining has been applied for some time at these mines. However, it was only recently that the crown pillars became vital to production. This has necessitated a number of innovative techniques to recover them.

In Japanese tunneling history, it has commonly been accepted that the long-round driving is difficult due to the complicated geological condition. Therefore, the maximum past record has been less than 3 m per round. A new record of advance was established in the 99 m2 headrace tunnel of Imaichi Water Power Station Project with an advance of 239.5 m in a month by drilling 3.9 m deep blast holes. The geology of the headrace tunnel composed of pyroxine andesite (ie. 960-1770 kg/cm2, VP3.1-4.3 km/s) which had several clay seams and open cracks and was moderately weathered. Automatic shotcrete machine was used for shotcreting. Rock support was specified according to the N.A.T.M. with each different rock type. The contractor achieved a remarkable tunneling advance not earlier experienced in Japan.

Geophones Geophones or seismometers are actuated by slight earth movements, and generate electrical currents, which are amplified and recorded. The part that conforms to the movement of the ground is called the support, and the part that remains more nearly stationary with respect to more distant unactuated parts of the earth is called the steady mass. The mechanical period of the geophone is the time required for an oscillation of the steady mass after an initial impulse is given it, and is determined by the effective stiffness of the spring joining the two parts together in relation to the weight of the suspended part. Coprecipitation of anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes has been applied to flocculation of several mineral systems. Results obtained in a study of the flocculation of kaolinite and hematite suspensions of polycationic and polyanionic electrolytes are presented. Greatly increased settling rates were observed following precipitation of positive and negative polyelectrolytes on the surface of finely divided minerals in aqueous suspension. The ratios of polycationic to polyanionic electrolytes required to produce maximum sedimentation have been shown to correspond closely with the equivalence points obtained by light scattering studies of systems containing the positive and negative polyelectrolytes by themselves.

Parameters affecting gold elution using the AARL process are reviewed and critically analyzed in an attempt to optimise metallurgical efficiency and minimise costs in both current and future carbon adsorption operations. Such factors as acid washing, column geometry, elution temperatures and pretreatment reagents are discussed together with eluant water quality and eluate flowrates. Hot acid washing of carbon prior to gold elution has many benefits. Besides improving elution efficiency when eluting with regional water, a hot acid treatment preheats the carbon without causing any gold leakage. Laboratory data indicated that hot acid washing reduces the mass loss of carbon during thermal regeneration. The eluate going to either zinc precipitation or electrowinning is also relatively free of troublesome impurities (organic contaminants and ferrocyanides in particular). Because of the chromatographic character of the AARL elution where an ionic strength gradient is used to inhibit the readsorption of gold, column geometry plays a significant role. While practical considerations and capital costs may restrain the length of the elution column, high length/diameter ratios are advocated in order to promote the plug flow of column eluate. From both a metallurgical and costing viewpoint, the two significant factors affect- ing the AARL gold elution are temperature and cyanide addition. High temperature and high reagent additions within prescribed limits will improve metallurgical efficiencies, but a balance between energy and reagent costs is required in order to minimise overall elution costs. As pretreatment reagents constitute a considerable portion of the total elution costs, both the addition and consumption of sodium cyanide must be carefully considered. Lower cyanide additions may be effective in certain instances, but the more practical use of 0,6 bed volume of a 2-3 per cent NaCN reagent containing 2 per cent NaOH is advocated. This is equivalent to an addition of 20-30 kg NaCN and 20 kg NaOH per ton carbon Treated.

"Railroad locomotives produce heat, gas, and smoke, which cause considerable discomfort to engine men and firemen while passing through tunnels. In order to try and improve these conditions, the Bureau of Mines has investigated the composition of atmospheres in cabs of freight locomotives while in tunnels; and some of the higher temperatures in the cabs were noted; physiological effects upon men were determined and gas masks and respirators were devised to eliminate the effects of irritating and poisonous gases and smoke. Those investigations were conducted in tunnels of the Baltimore & Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Union Pacific railroads; while that described in this paper was carried out in tunnels of the Chesapeake & Ohio, Railroad, situated in the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains in Virginia and West Virginia, Freight locomotives used by this railroad are of the Mallet type, which have two separate cylinders: and two separate sets of driving wheels on each side. In locomotive language they are of the 2-6-6-2 type. All of the cylinders act as simple engines when starting or in slow, heavy hauling; but at faster speeds the pair of cylinders on each side operate compound, Mallet locomotives are the largest and most powerful now operated.The tendency in train operation has always been to increase the burden upon locomotives, Present traffic needs frequently load even the Mallet engine to capacity, and yet the weight of trains tends to increase. It has been suggested as a means of securing greater power units that Mallets be constructed to operate only as simple engines. This would increase the amount of steam given off as the amount of coal burned and the resulting volume of flue gas emitted."

The immediate floor bed in the Illinois Basin coal mines is often comprised of weak plastic underclay material. Operational and stability problems were encountered in the past due to the low strength characteristics of the underclay floor. Among several indicators of the nature of the floor, Atterberg limits are the most important ones that describe the plasticity behavior of these clayey materials. While several useful and interesting studies were conducted in the past on the Illinois Basin weak floor material, within the knowledge of the authors, a comprehensive database describing the plasticity characteristics of the floor material has never been published. In this paper, a large database comprising over 700 sets of Atterberg limits was put together from 39 inactive and active mines from all the three states covering the Basin. Analysis of this data shows several interesting trends related to the engineering behavior of the floor material. The paper also describes the practical implications of the trends shown by the Atterberg limits.

Again, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to another session of the 79th meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute. The thing again that has always been impressive are the activities that we've had so far. The success in the meetings has been delightfully encouraging to all of our committee people. Please welcome the chairman of the session, Charlie Margolf. MR. MARGOLF: Thank you, Vernal. Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. It would be my privilege to serve as the session chairman this morning. To allow the maximum time for our speakers, I'll turn the microphone over to Bernie Bernstrom who will introduce our first speaker. MR. BERNSTROM: Thank you. As Vernal mentioned, Dan Jackson will be our first speaker. He is the Western Editor of Coal Age Magazine. Dan really doesn't need an introduction to this group. He's belonged to the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute about 25 years. Dan is a native of West Virginia and he's an ex-coal miner. He graduated form West Virginia University as an electrical engineer and worked for Amherst and West Bending Coal prior to employment by Coal Age Magazine. Back in 1972 Coal Age moved him to Denver from New York City. MR. JACKSON: When Vernal Mortensen asked me speak to the members of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute earlier this year I found it impossible to say no to the guy because of what he has contributed to western coal. Little did 1 know that the subject he had in mind would be entitled, "An Outsider's View of Western Coal." At first I asked myself-I've been associated with the coal industry for some 38 years, 12 years in national operations and 26 years reporting on it. You might say that I've been married to two industries, coal and the business press for 26 years, but today I'll put on my business press hat and try to make an impression of what an outsider might think of western coal. But at the outset, let's get one thing straight: When you say press, whether it's business press, the media or whatever, and you heard some comments yesterday as far as what the media has done .to this industry and there's been some definitions bandied around as to just what an editor is. One of the most recent ones has defined an editor as a person who can talk on any subject with an open mouth. Now that's not my case. Secondly, I don't give long talks. Several years ago I was giving a rather lengthy talk to a group similar to this and it was halfway through the talk when I noticed one guy on my right looking at his watch quite frequently. I didn't mind that too much because all of us do that once in a while, but when he looked at his watch, took it off and shook it, I thought, "My God, better cut short." But for more than a decade western coal has enjoyed substantial annual increases in production from some 30,000,000 tons in 1970 to some 264,000,000 tons in 1981, but 1982 was a different story. We lost about 6,000,000 tons of production in that year. In 1983 it's expected to be a little worse than '82. Coal historically doesn't rebound from a recession as quickly as other industries. It takes about eight to 10 months longer for us to really get moving again and I'm afraid that you'll still have to don your fighting helmets and flack jackets when you go out into the market to sell your product. Western coal, as you know, has problems and al l of them are not going away when the recession ends and they won't go away overnight. I'm sure most of you are aware of what those problems are. Carl Bagge and Jim Harris, along with other speakers, at this meeting have educated us well on those problems and I'm sure you'll hear more from Jim Watt at today's luncheon. If everyone in this room were asked to list three orfourof the most serious problems facing western coal, I'd make book that the total of the answers wouldn't vary by more than 3 to 5%, if that much. But coal is not the only mining segment in the U.S. with problems. Metal and non-metal mining has its share, too. I'd like to step back into the past for a few minutes, if I may, to a time when our problems were just beginning. Since 1979 a third of the nation's mines, including coal, metal and nonmetal have been shut down. The total volume of all mining in the U.S. in that year totaled some $24 billion. Today that figure has dropped some 21 %. The after tax rate on return for mining companies has fallen from 6'/% in 1980 to minus 3% in 1983. But that's really not where our problems began. They began 20 years ago when a profound change began taking place in the U.S. economy. Our economy had been growing at about 2'/-3% annually without exception except for the great depression. Our inflation rate was about I'/%, interest rates were running about 6%, and the federal budget was $77 billion, really great figures compared to today. From 1960 to 1980 the federal budget increased almost 1.000% and taxed paid by individual families increased by 700% during that same period. Despite the huge increases in taxes, the federal deficit kept getting larger and larger year after year and within this 20 year period the national debt climbed to a trillion dollars. Economic progress of this type can't continue indefinitely without some serious consequences. The result of that economy, well, you know what happened and there is a direct relationship of that

Introduction Technological advances in mining and processing have started the domestic mining and mineral industry back on the road to competitiveness. A massive trade deficit, however, coupled with foreign competition and more government regulations threaten to slow this recovery. So say mining executives in Colorado and Minnesota. These industry decision-makers agree that their challenge is to continue the technical innovations of their industry. The journey back to profitability and competitiveness means improved products, they say, but at lower production costs. At separate gatherings in January, officials in both states said that they believe their industry is up to the challenge. Worker attitudes will have to change, they understand, and management styles will need adjusting. And, while they are willing to make the necessary adjustments, they are going to need some help. Or, at the very least, less interference from the federal government. Foreign markets, all but closed to American products, must be opened up on a reciprocal basis. The nation's $170 billion trade deficit is a priority item that can no longer be ignored. And, closer to home, federal and state environmental regulations concerning mineral production must themselves be monitored. 1987 in Colorado While Colorado's service and trade industries should have a fairly good 1987, the state's mining industry can expect another disappointing year filled with layoffs and declining profits, according to the Colorado Mining Association. Once again, foreign competition and government regulations are seen as the main reasons for the mineral industry's woes. And state mining officials see little relief until at least the 1990s. Speaking to a group of reporters at its annual press briefing in Denver, CMA officials said Colorado's overall nonfuel mineral production is expected to fluctuate between a flat and declining growth trend. Mining employment in the state is expected to fall by 400 people this year, to about 7500. In 1981, Colorado mines employed as many as 17,800 people. During the 1970s and early 1980s, the employment rate in mining in the state grew by 12% annually, according to a summary report compiled by the CMA. Last year, worldwide molybdenum production continued to exceed demand US moly producers, therefore, were forced to continue their familiar path of production cutbacks, as well as workforce reductions. And some molybdenum mines in the US closed altogether, the CMA report stated. In Colorado, Amax's Climax and Henderson molybdenum mines operated at about 50% of combined capacity. Climax employed about 200 people at the beginning of 1987, producing about 5.4 kt/d (6000 stpd) or ore. Henderson employed about 700 people, producing about 24.5 kt/d (27,000 stpd) of ore. In coal, the number of licensed coal mines in Colorado has declined from 124 in 1960 to 43 in 1986, of which only 23 were producing. Once a stable source of employment and production, the metallurgical coal industry in the state has only one surviving metallurgical coal mine, Mid-Continent's Orchard Valley mine. High production and transportation costs, weakness in the US steel industry, and a weak market position have contributed to the decline, the summary reported. Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior. The first report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-363/. The second report gave the same data? for motor gasolines sold during the summer of 19364/. The third report of the series gave the same data for motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1936-375/. This report covers 63 brands of gasoline represented by 1,136 samples excluding the Pacific Coast. Those from the Pacific Coast were averaged by the Pacific Coast technical group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were submitted. In some areas reports were received from five or six companies on the same brands of gasoline, whereas in other areas only one company reported on a brand. Thus, it can be seen that some of the data are more representative than others.
