The Bureau of Mines Coal Carbonization Laboratory has been interested for the past 20 years in the quality of coke in connection with the selection of coals for the manufacture of coke. The principal experimental. method of carbonization, whereby 100- to 200-pound charges are carbonized in sheet-steel cylindrical retorts with recovery and determination of the properties of coke, gas, and products, was developed in cooperation with the American Gas Association,4 5 and it is known as the BM-AGA method. Results of the investigations of 90 coals included in the BM-AGA Survey of the Carbonizing Prop¬erties of American Coals have been published; 6 and, in addition to these, about 200 coals have been carbonized over limited temperature ranges. Because coke from cylindrical retorts differs in shape from that made in rectangular ovens, the BM-AGA method has been criticized, although those who developed it have always believed that it served well as a means of measuring the relative strengths of cokes from different coals. It is recognized that no laboratory-method carbonization, even on a large twit, can yield results that exactly duplicate those obtained in commercial ovens and retorts. However, with the completion and satisfactory performance of an experimental vertical slot oven of 500-pound capacity at the University of Illinois Geological Survey Laboratory,' the opportunity to directly compare BM-AGA coke with coke made by two-sided heating became available and the necessary test apparatus was installed. The Bureau of Mines slot oven, which is similar to that designed by the University of Illinois Geological Survey, has been used to carbonize 11 coals (or blends) tested by the BM-AGA method. Marble is a preferred surfacing material in up-scale buildings. Its use increased in the 1870's with rising national wealth and declined in the 1950's when synthetic materials for these applications were developed. Natural marble is now limited to high-end domestic and commercial structures. Cultured marble is a paste of white marble dust and polyester resin cured in molds yielding fixtures of specific finished dimensions. Dyes incorporated at different stages in the mixing cycle mimic shades and veining of natural marble. This paper discusses the filler requirements for cultured marble production and reviews new techniques to cut and finish natural marble.

The stability of strip pillar is the key to successful strip pillar mining. In analyzing the stability of the strip pillar, the width of yield zone must be determined. The determination of the width of yield zone has been an important subject for researchers. In this paper, the numerical method was used to study the relationship between the width of yield zone in strip pillar and coal recovery ratio. The results showed that as the recovery ratio increases, the width of yield zone increases exponentially. Accordingly, the formula for determining the width of yield zone was updated and the effect of changing coal recovery ratio on strip pillar deformation is presented.

San Juan es una de las principales provincias exportadoras de minerales en Argentina, cuya actividad minera le proporciona mayores recursos. Sin embargo, sus plantas de fabricación (molienda, trituración) producen polvos en el exterior que contaminan el medio ambiente. Por ello, los productores incorporaron nuevas tecnologías limpias que no afecten ni el desarrollo de la producción, ni el medio ambiente. En este sentido, el presente trabajo señala las aplicaciones que el Instituto de Investigaciones Mineras de la Facultad de Ingeniería de la UNSJ ha diseñado a nivel laboratorio, a través de un recuperador electrostático de polvo, el cual responde a las necesidades de los productores y cumple con el objetivo de vinculación y transferencia con el medio productivo. Asimismo, se describe el diseño de un método de recuperación de polvos y el filtro recuperador del mismo, reduciendo el nivel de polvo a un 90% y logrando un precio de venta en el mercado.

A major goal of the Bureau of Mines is to conserve the Nation's mineral resources by developing improved performance materials. In support of this mission, a survey of the state of the art of chemically bonded refractories has been made, covering the scientific literature, government reports, and patents. This review includes research and development results for phosphate, silicate, oxychloride, oxysulfate, and other bonding agents used in refractories manufacture. A significant finding of the review was that references on bonding mechanisms, bond formation kinetics, and other important process parameters and conditions were few and universally vague. As a result, recommendations are made to expand research efforts to investigate the kinetics and mechanisms of reactions in chemically bonded refractories.

Principles of Green Chemistry provide useful guidance for sustainable mineral process development. Laboratory bench scale testing was carried out using pregnant cyanide leach solutions, and a number of commercially available mercury precipitation reagents were compared using jar testing to determine the most efficient and selective reagents for mercury precipitation. The most efficient reagent identified was sodium polymeric thiocarbonate (NaPTC).Coagulation experiments with fine diatomaceous earth resulted in a stable precipitate, with good settling properties. On line monitoring of the mercury in solution is recommended for process implementation to conserve reagent removing approximately 90-95% of the mercury with minimal silver and negligible gold losses.

The Konkola Mine, a subsidiary of the Konkola Copper Mines Plc (KCM) which is owned by the Vedanta group of companies of India and Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Holding limited, is located at Chililabombwe in the northern extension of Zambia's Copperbelt province. In its operations, the mine has been experiencing problems in ascertaining the optimum degree of fineness and the operating density of the hydrocyclone overflow in order to achieve high flotation performance. It was believed that recovery of sulphide copper minerals from Konkola ore is a function of the fineness of the grind so that it might be an economical justification to modify the grinding plant in order to run at lower cyclone overflow densities than the case is now. In an effort to improve these operations, it was decided to carry out test work on various hydrocyclones of sizes 0.381 m, 0.4575 m and on 0.508 m. The later was found to give satisfactory results and was installed on the plant. Despite giving satisfactory results there was need to investigate further to establish the working densities and size. Increasing the density of cyclone overflow decreases the per cent passing 75 pm at least in the range 1080-1 150 g/l. Furthermore, hydrocyclones give better separation at low densities of feed and hence the efficiency is high at low feed densities. Circulating load increases with an increase in feed densities and an decrease in the grind. The flotation performance in both sulphide and oxide copper minerals rougher stages is enhanced with an increase in the degree of fineness of the grind, with an optimum being obtained at a density of 1 150 g/l and 81.4% passing 75 µm. The paper presents the comments on the advantages of implementing an integrated system of managing mining exploitation in hard coal mines, as well as the comprehensive integration of information on the process of deposit exploitation with economic data, so as to achieve an optimum technical and economic effects. The principles of constructing the production management system have been presented, thanks to which the management boards are provided with reliable technical and economic information on a mining company via information technology. The strategic direction of a company’s operation may currently be verified according to the external conditions that change over time (the information on the deposit, force majeure events, changing expectations of customers, etc.).

The definition of precipitation-hardening1 is well understood and its principles have been subjected to study for some time. However, the variation of properties with double aging, combined with strain-hardening, gives promise of new and useful phenomena. Properly to understand these distinctions, definitions of these terms are necessary. Precipitation-hardening1.—This reaction usually depends upon an alloy having such a composition that it consists only, or in major part, of but one phase, a solid solution, at a high temperature, so that, upon slow cooling, this solution breaks down into two phases, the solid solution and a compound. By heating the alloy to the temperature for maximum solution of the compound, quenching, and reheating to a suitable lower temperature for critical dispersion precipitation of the compound, useful properties of the alloy may be developed to a maximum. Double Aging.—Dougle aging in part is similar to the process for precipitation-hardening, consisting of heating a precipitation-hardening alloy to the solution temperature, quenching, reheating to the suitable dispersion precipitation temperature, strain-hardening, and again reheating to a suitable temperature to develop certain useful properties to a maximum. The strain-hardening may be induced by two methods: (I) a rate of cooling from the first reheat may suffice to strain the solid solution lattice of the alloy; or (2) the alloy may be cold-worked to a suitable degree between the two reheats. ackleg rock drills are widely used in the mining industry and are known to generate high levels of hand-arm vibration which contribute to the development of the hand-arm vibration syndrome for exposed miners.1-3 To reduce the vibration levels, a prototype of an antivibration handle was developed as part of a previous study.4 To provide some bench marking for this handle prototype and to follow the evolution of its performance over time, a test bench was developed to characterize the vibration emission values of jackleg drills under controlled operating conditions. As the current ISO 8662 series of standards could not apply directly to this type of tool, there was a need to design and validate a test bench to evaluate the vibration emission values of jackleg drills, while taking into account the conditions specific to the operation of this type of tool. Methods A test bench including an energy absorber, was developed for testing jackleg drills based on the ISO 8662-3 standard 5. The energy absorber was bolted to a 3300 kg concrete block to ensure tool stability. A pictorial view of the device is given in Figure 1. For validation purposes, acceleration measurements at the handle of a conventional jackleg drill were taken simultaneously along the three axes (xh, yh and zh) in an underground rock drilling operation as well as on the test bench. The handle accelerations were measured for three different jackleg angles (13º, 28º and 43º) determined with respect to the floor. Moreover, each measurement was repeated at least three times to asses the data repeatability. [ ] Results As a preliminary validation of the test bench, Figure 2 provides a comparison of the frequency weighted rms acceleration spectrum measured along the zh-axis, for both underground drilling and operation on the test bench (28º jackleg angle in both cases). It is shown that the vibration measured on the handle of a jackleg drill operating on the test bench is representative of that recorded during typical rock drilling operations, despite the fact that some harmonics of the percussion frequencies are generated with a higher amplitude on the test bench. IN THE early summer of 1917, it became evident that the then existing sources of supply of guns and gun forgings were totally inadequate for the enormous and rapidly growing requirements of the Ordnance Department of the Army, so arrangements were made with sixteen makers of other products to take up the manufacture of guns and gun forgings. Nine of these makers were required to produce their own steel from the raw materials and convert it into rough machined gun forgings; the others finished and assembled these forgings into completed guns. In December, 1914, four of these makers of steel and rough gun forgings were instructed to manufacture the same amount of the 6-in. and 9.5-in. guns and howitzers. It, therefore, seemed practical .and profitable to assemble these makers into a small group, together with the officers of the Ordnance Department, and provide standard 'equipment in each of the four works for the production of these two types of guns. The advantages of this cooperation were immediately manifested, and there commenced an interchange of shop practice and a free discussion of facilities and methods that covered not only the equipment but the manufacturing processes.

Boliden Harjavalta Oy operates a copper smelter in Finland, which is based on flash smelting together with Peirce-Smith converting of copper matte. This paper reviews a case study when a high arsenic feed mixture was successfully eliminated in order to guarantee the anode quality. Based on theoretical and practical knowledge in slag chemistry at Outokumpu Research, the CaO-fluxing practice was introduced. Description of a thermodynamic simulation using MTDATA and implementation of the results into converting practice is given. Results showed that the impurity fluctuations in raw materials could be effectively controlled by efficient utilization of different slag chemistry.

"The complex planning required to achieve any planned production yields multiple and dissociated responses over the life of project (LOP). The customary decision-making process negates the possibilities of developing optimized and integral solutions from operating levels up to business and strategic levels. This results in an inefficient project or overall underperformance of the operation.In the project setting, disconnected trade-offs and improved performance studies become inadequate, because they are site-specific and use only a few comparative parameters. They are often based on a small data-set.Decisions taken to achieve overall objectives require the correct determination and dissemination of key performance indicators (KPIs). The KPIs indicate efficiency in operation, whereby the marginal rate of technical substitution corresponds to the rate of production. It is the necessary condition for optimization. Performance realization for sustainability follows optimization modelling, the latter often being presented with financial results such as business net present value (NPV). It considers techno-financial constraints and provides a strategic and aligned outlook of KPI decisions for an enhanced and integrated outcome.This paper explains a mining case study that is rendered efficient, and through business optimization (BO) short-term and sustainable targets are reached. Business optimization increases the NPV by 14.7%. This is achieved by challenging conventional decision-making associated with maximizing business value by including environmental externalities within the LOP."

In this present research, a polymer poly (acrylamide-allyl thiourea) (PAM-ATU) with an average molecular weight 1.66 × 104 g/mol was used as a depressant in the flotation separation of molybdenite from chalcopyrite and galena. The micro-flotation experimental results showed that PAM-ATU exhibited a strong influence on the flotation performances of chalcopyrite and galena, but had little effect on that of molybdenite within a pH range of 9.0~11.0 at a dosage of lower than 6.0 mg/L. The flotation results of bulk flotation tests illustrated that PAM-ATU showed a stronger depression power than sodium thioglycollate (TGA) and sodium sulfide. The comparison results demonstrated that PAM-ATU and TGA had an advantage in reducing galena and chalcopyrite impurities in the molybdenum concentrate, respectively. With the combination of PAM-ATU and TGA, a good flotation separation result was achieved through one roughing operation where the recovery of molybdenum in the froth product was over 75.0%, while the recovery of copper and lead were less than 22.0% and 15.0%, individually. It was also found that a molybdenum concentrate with Mo grade of 46.32%, Cu grade of 0.16%, Pb grade of 0.06%, was obtained by a closed circuit flotation flowsheet of one roughing-three scavenging-five cleaning with a Mo recovery of 77.67%. Electrogenerated chlorine leaching of waste printed circuit boards was investigated in hydrochloric acid solutions. The pulverized printed circuit board contained about 37.6% of metal component, in which copper was about 83.6%. The leaching rate of copper was greatly affected by current density and agitation speed. The leaching of copper up to 98% was achieved at 20 mA/cm2, 50?, 180 minutes, and 600 rpm in 1M HCl solution. Increasing agitation and lowering current density enhanced utilization efficiency of electrogenerated chlorine. Leaching of copper was suppressed at initial stage, while the minor metal elements, such as aluminum, lead, and tin, were dominantly leached out.

"Recently, significant efforts to improve productivity from the tight intervals of the Mulichinco Formation within the Sierra Chata Field in the Neuquén Basin have been ongoing. Because conventional high quality reservoirs were being developed in this field, a proper reservoir understanding and completion approach was applied. After developing these high permeability reservoirs, the operator began evaluating the tight intervals and new areas within the field, but a completely different approach was necessary to achieve motivating production improvement.An extensive study to help enhance reservoir understanding and identify key factors controlling productivity of these tight intervals (which tend to be in the range of 5 µD) has been ongoing. Some of the issues discussed in this study are 1) petrophysical review, 2) rock properties calibration, 3) geomechanics understanding, 4) faulting and micro faulting/lineaments description, 5) stimulation and completions review and, 6) understanding key production drivers.As in many other tight reservoir projects, a considerable area of the reservoir must be effectively stimulated during the hydraulic fracturing process to achieve economic productivity. Two critical issues hinder these objectives. First, the low permeability in addition to a pore pressure close to or even lower than hydrostatic are critical characteristics when attempting to flow back the well and clean up fractures. Second, very high horizontal stress anisotropy resulting from a strike slip stress regime promotes the generation of simple planar bi-wing fractures. It is well-known that this fracture geometry will contact much less reservoir area compared to more complex fractures, as the operator would normally intend to create at very low permeability reservoirs.This paper discusses these issues and how they were addressed. A pilot drilling and completion program was initiated during 2012 to validate this study. Key factors include well location relative to formation unconformities, their orientation relative to the far field principal stresses, hydraulic fractures generated, and overall completion design."

Many modern industries rely on rare earth elements (REEs) to produce products that are essential to both civil and defense applications. In a prior study (Vass et al., 2019), the authors showed that REE grades in acid mine drainage (AMD) and associated byproduct precipitates from AMD treatment (AMDp) warrant evaluation as a feedstock for REE production. The current work extends that effort through a broad survey of 141 AMD treatment sites in Northern and Central Appalachia. In this study, 185 raw AMD and 623 AMDp field samples were obtained and analyzed to assess the REE and major metal concentrations. Results show that an average of 282 μg/L and 724 g/tonne of REEs occur in AMD and AMDp respectively. Additionally, both basins contained similar distributions of REEs, and these distributions tended to favor heavy and critical REEs when compared with traditional REE ore deposits. Geospatial analysis identified a total resource of 340 tonnes stored at the 141 sites sampled in this study. While this analysis did not quantify the basin-wide REE inventory, it does indicate the impact that processing cut-off grades will have on the overall AMDp resource base.
