SINCE the development of dispersion-hardenable lead-antimony alloys1 in the laboratories of the Western Electric Co., Inc., studies have been made of the effect of various third constituents on these alloys.2 This paper covers a study of the effect of small amounts of arsenic. This element is important since it occurs as an impurity in many commercial antimonial leads and the results obtained are particularly interesting as indicating a class of addition agents which exert a stabilizing effect on dispersion-hardened alloys. EXPERIMENTAL In order to-study the effect ,of increasing amounts of arsenic, a series of alloys were made up containing 1 per cent. antimony, and arsenic varying from 0. to 0.10 per cent., the balance Doe Run lead (99.997 per FIG. 1..-CHANGE OF MICRO-BRINELL HARDNESS WITH TIME OF 1 PER CENT. Significant advances in longwall mining technology and equipment have occurred over the last decade. By the late 1990s, longwall mine output accounted for 40 percent of all underground output in the U.S., and today longwall mines account for approximately 50 percent of coal produced underground in the United States. A 53 percent increase in average shift production rates has occurred over the last fifteen years. This increased longwall productivity has meant that far more dust is being produced and controlling respirable coal dust provides an ongoing challenge for coal mine operators. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has completed a series of benchmark surveys at longwall operations across the country to identify current operating practices and the types of controls being used. Gravimetric and instantaneous dust sampling was completed to quantify dust generation from major sources on the longwall section and to determine the relative effectiveness of the different control technologies in use today. Substantial reductions in dust levels were realized at sampling locations on the face when compared longwall surveys conduct in the 1990?s. This paper summarizes the results from the underground dust surveys and discusses current longwall dust control technology and operating practices.

The transgressive sedimentary sequence of the Noumea Basin contains rhyolitic lavas and less voluminous mafic and intermediate volcanics of shoshonitic affinities which erupted simultaneously during the late Cretaceous. The shoshonitic volcanism shows a trend froIn early mafic to younger evolved intermediate lithologies. The rhyolites are consistently calcalkaline. There is no evidence of mixing of the two magma types. The shoshonitic volcanism is the result of a short-lived subduction event related to spreading in the New Caledonia Basin and involved reactivation of an earlier esozoic subduction zone.

I have spent most of the past 35 years working as an economic geologist in the area of exploration and development of base and precious metals. Most of this period has been as an employee of Trans-National-Corporations (TNC's). I presently act as a consulting geologist to a joint venture company, bringing together two such TNC's: Anglo American Corporation and affiliated companies De Beers (Diamonds) and Minorco (Metals mining outside of Southern Africa), and Normandy Mining Limited ofAustralia. Normandy is presently through its gold arm PosGold, Australia's largest gold miner and Anglo American can claim to be the world's largest gold company producing over 280 tonnes of gold a year, more than twice its nearest rival Gold Fields of South Africa. In addressing this topic, the role that Government can, and should play in mineral development, I will be drawing heavily on some examples from these and other TNC's experience in recent offshore mining investment.

ABSTRACT A methodology based on a two-stage approach was developed for process technology selection. The first stage includes evaluation of available technologies, followed by shortlisting the best technologies based on mass and energy balance modelling, financial analysis, and risk analysis. The second stage involves detailed analysis using refined input data, mass and energy balance modelling, and capital and operating cost estimation, as well as a more detailed financial analysis. A case study covering the selection of ironmaking technologies for a company in the Russian Federation is presented to illustrate the critical elements of the methodology and the analysis process.

It has often been said that the best contracts written are by people who are suspicious of each other. The Spanish philosopher, Ortega y Gasset, said: "Every contract is an Act of Distrust." The arena for dispute settlement outside of the courts is increasing day by day - contracts, especially construction and civil engineering contracts, are written containing arbitration clauses for settling disputes - the very drafting of standard forms of contract, do in some instances by their very construction, create an ambiguity as to intent and provide a breeding ground for dispute. I come from a land far across the sea - the most southern land before the South Pole. Being a young country, 150 years old, we are still progressing - being far removed from the trouble free zones of the world and nuclear free we enjoy a lifestyle second to none.

"The current state-of-the-art of chloride hydrometallurgy for treatment of complex sulphide bulk concentrates is reviewed. General considerations regarding the various flowsheet steps are examined and options discussed. Then, individual flowsheets are presented and discussed. Finally, the forward prospects for chloride hydrometallurgy for treatment of complex sulphide bulk concentrates is considered and conclusions drawn concerning the likely application of this technology in the future. IntroductionHydrometallurgical processes for treating sulphide concentrates, in general, have received considerable attention over the last three decades or more. Many flowsheets have been developed, many pilot-plant studies have been undertaken and several processes are now successfully operating. For example, direct ammoniacal pressure leaching has been used by Sherritt Gordon Mines since the 1950s to extract nickel from pentlandite concentrates, the roast-leach-electrowin route is widely used to recover zinc from sphalerite concentrates and direct sulphuric acid pressure leaching of sphalerite concentrates has been successfully commercialized. Also, Duval Corporation operated a direct cupric/ferric chloride leaching process (Schweitzer and Livingston, 1982) with electrowinning to recover copper from chalcopyrite concentrates, this process (now closed) being the only chloride process which has been commercialized for a sulphide flotation concentrate. Despite these developments, it has long been considered, particularly for copper sulphide concentrates, that direct hydrometallurgical processes are in the main unlikely to be able to compete successfully with smelting for large-scale operations of simple high-grade single metal concentrates. As long as such concentrates can be produced commercially, smelting is likely to remain the principal processing route (Flett, 1981). This view is being challenged nowadays through pressure leaching developments made by Dynatec and CESL in Canada and the recent start-up of the Western Metals Gunpowder plant at Mt. Gordon in Queensland (Flett, 2000). Complex sulphide ores offer even greater opportunities because of the ability to produce a bulk sulphide concentrate from the complex sulphide ore with considerably higher metal recovery than is often possible from the production of individual metal sulphide concentrates from differential flotation. Interest continues to focus on hydrometallurgical solutions to these processing problems, particularly with regard to chloride hydrometallurgy. This paper, therefore, reviews current state-of-theart with respect to chloride hydrometallurgy"

A technique for use in underground coal mines measures the response times of machine-mounted methane monitors. This technique uses a calibration cup to deliver gas to the sensor head to measure response times. For comparison, in the current study, response times were measured by placing methane sensor heads in a specially designed test box where they were exposed to an atmosphere containing a constant concentration of methane. Response time readings measured in the test box were shorter than the readings obtained using the calibration cup. The response times measured in the test box were comparable for sensors from three different manufacturers. The effects of dust cap and flame arrestor design on response times were also evaluated using the test box.

There are large tonnages of low-grade manganese ores in India fromwhich it is uneconomic to produce ferroalloys by conventionalsubmerged arc furnace smelting. A possible way to utilise these ores is to smelt them with carbon to produce pig iron and a manganese-rich slag, then to metallothermically reduce the molten slag to silicomanganese. Thermodynamic modelling of the metallothermic reduction stage using aluminium, silicon or aluminium-silicon alloy as the reductant at 1450¦C showed that an acceptable grade of silicomanganese could be produced. Manganese recoveries were predicted to be about 80 per cent. Heat balances indicated that silicothermic reduction may not produce enough heat to maintain reaction temperature. Small-scale laboratory experiments showed that the manganese grade of the alloys, and the manganese recoveries, were close to those predicted, but those for silicon were muchlower. Aluminothermic reduction produced the highest grade manganesealloy. The slag-metal equilibrium involving manganese, silicon and their oxides was investigated and it was found that equilibrium was not attained in any of the experiments, due probably to the very low rate of reactions involving silicon. This could be used to advantage in practice to achieve higher manganese levels in the alloys.

Rock socketed mini-piles are a desirable foundation alternative when design capacity is more than 40 tons and there is limited access. In this case history mini-piles were designed to support between 75 and 200 kips at 12 locations adjacent to a perimeter wall, a party wall and at cast iron column piers. Limited geotechnical information, low overhead clearance, and active building population tested the creativity of the team to get the piles installed. The key geotechnical concern during installation of the mini-piles was the presence of a glacial till layer above the bedrock surface that restricted the seating of the casing into bedrock with a track mounted drill rig. Soil loss during the advancement of the rock socket using an air hammer was excessive and increased the risk of subsidence. Over a three week period the engineer worked with the contractor to modify the design, means, methods, and materials to install piles with adequate load capacity. This paper will present the changes in design and construction methods that were required.

Rising energy costs are a growing concern among mine operators. At sur’ace operations, the size of a dragline, production requirements, pit geometry and layout, and operator skill are all factors in potential energy savings. The following tips are offered as a practical means to conserve energy demand, and can be applied to diesel fuel draglines as well.

Other features are an aging and retiring ‘Baby Boomer’ generation, coupled with a low uptake of new graduates and the uncertainty in predicting future capital expenditure programs and requirements. Combine this with a reluctance of cash-poor operations to modernise and adapt in an environment of low metal prices, and there is a real uncertainty in how service providers will meet industry needs as they evolve.The industry that supports operations and new projects is suffering a rapid decline in the currently severely curtailed capital investment environment. These embrace a whole gamut of agile alternatives in the areas of partnering, alliances, commercial and shared risk models and mutual innovations. These will be discussed with some case studies and suggested approaches.Particular emphasis will be upon brownfield expansions and upgrades which have emerged recently as a preferred lower capital and focused way to achieve best practical outcome at lowest cost. There are a number of specific features of such brownfields projects including the requirement for very close cooperation between the execution team, operators, maintenance and suppliers and a maximum usage of site resources and ingenuity. Often, required investment hurdle rates are high, downtime allowed is minimal and site resources usage is maximised. This requires mutual trust, good planning and high health, safety, environment and community (HSEC) standards and practice. In many ways the practices and skills needed are the exact opposite of the historical ‘big greenfields’ project with which the industry has been geared for more recently.Another developing area has been with innovative commercial models and practices. These have been as a direct result of the more challenging investment criteria being adopted and the relative hunger of service providers. It has become more common to look at these commercial/costing alternatives very early in the project cycle as an essential project tool and not just as a possible option. These commercial solutions cover such alternatives as leasing and rental, deferred payments, build–own–operate–transfer (BOOT) and build–own–operate (BOO), whole-of-mine preferred spares and maintenance terms, and aggressive performance targets with real assurance penalties. Once again this requires very close mutual dealings and trust, and sufficient time allocation compared to a conventional approach.Citation:Coleman, R, King, J and Hunter, T, 2016. The complexities that exist in the nature of the basic feedstock to the metallurgical process call for a high degree of ingenuity from the extractive metallurgist in seeking the best possible treatment method for a particular ore. Drawing from personal experience the author presents four case studies that demonstrate the value of creative thinking in addressing the challenges typically encountered by the extraction metallurgist. It is concluded that creative expression most often occurs in response to a perceived strong need within an organization. By deliberately laying down meaningful challenges management can stimulate innovative thinking and achieve extraordinary results.

In any earth-moving operation, more profit may be earned or lost by equipment scheduling than by any other single facet of the project. Many now-defunct earth movers would have survived the cost-profit squeeze had they followed an efficient, cost saving, equipment scheduling program. The ideal program would have every item of the equipment fleet working all of the time. In practice this ideal situation is not possible. Several basic methods of equipment scheduling, with an infinite number of minor variations, are used. The first approach is the use of a "minimum equipment fleet," of which all items or equipment are scheduled each working shift.

During the past 6 years the Mining Division of the U.S. Bureau of Mines has prepared many information circulars containing valuable technical data covering the operating details of mining and ore-dressing plants throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and other countries. These papers, written for the most part by operating officials in the field, have been designed to comprise a reference library for the operating engineer. In order to make the information contained in these publications more readily available to the busy engineer the enclosed series of reference tables has been compiled. The tabular arrangement is by subject rather than alphabetical order, thus avoiding the bulk of an alphabetical index.

An active list of permissible explosives was published in December 1936 as part of Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3324, under the title "Active List of Permissible Explosives and Blasting Devices Approved Prior to July 31, 1936." This list included 170 brand names. Changes in the list that have been authorized to June 30, 1937 placed 35 additional brands of permissible explosives on the active permissible list as a result of tests, changes in brand names, or transfer from the inactive list. Ten permissible explosives were transferred from the active to the inactive list. The present list contains 196 brand names, one explosive having been placed on the list subsequent to June 30, 1937. Mining coal in deep, gassy strata is difficult, particularly in deep mines of the west. Dynamic failure (bumps, bounces, etc.) is commonplace, particularly where strong sandstone strata are encountered in the overburden. The disaster potential posed by dynamic failure in these mines is examined and found to be significant. Recent trends in MSHA reportable bumping of deep western coal mines have been increasing. Recent clusters of bumps are explored, a number of which have ended badly. The mechanisms of these bumps and their interactions with geologic structures are explored. Significant progress in controlling these hazards depends on a full understanding of their interaction with geologic conditions. It is apparent that not all MSHA reportable bumps have the same mechanism. These reports describe bumping of pillars, rolling of ribs, outbursts of coal, heaving of floor, shaking-induced roof falls, etc. Progress depends on understanding the underlying mechanisms of these events, and then determining which are potentially active at a particular location. Designs and other protective measures can then be adapted and deployed appropriately. Explicit consideration of mechanisms also supports extrapolation beyond experience as design extends into new mine geometries, geologies, mining methods and increasing depth. Finally, the goal should not be only to design hazard out of mines, but also to provide assurance that this, in fact, has occurred. Pursuit of this goal has been taken up by a major NIOSH research project. The centerpiece of this project is development of a Dynamic Failure Control Program to monitor evolution of dynamic failure hazards with changing geologic conditions to assure that control and protective measures are appropriately deployed.

The author explains how to choose and integrate roadheaders into ongoing operations as another step in the inexorable march from labor to capital intensive mining. Empirical methods involve the scientific interpretation of real-world experience. Many problems in ground control lend themselves to an empirical approach because the mines provide us with plenty of experience with full-scale rock structures. During the past 10 years, powerful design techniques have emerged from statistical analyses of large databases of real-world pillar successes and failures. These include the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS), the Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS), the Mark-Bieniawski rectangular pillar strength formula, and guidelines for preventing massive pillar collapses. In the process, our practical understanding of pillar behavior has been greatly enriched.
