"Water evaluation and management during mining exploration and operational activities is crucial to minimise direct and indirect operational costs and also in delivering mining companies the less tangible, but equally critical æsocial license to operateÆ.Mining is often carried out in remote areas, where the mine will be the most significant and visible user and potential contaminator of water resources. However, wherever it is located, a mineÆs use of water must be managed in the context of two key aspects: the natural parameters of the resource; its abundance, its temporal variability and its chemical and physical qualities other users of the resource; other industry, potable water supplies and ecological requirements of local habitats.It is vital, therefore, that this commodity be assessed to an appropriate degree to help establish the viability and sustainability of the mining project and identify those other stakeholders who may be affected by the mining companyÆs activities.This paper outlines the background to catchment-scale model and presents a cost-effective method for establishing a robust water baseline and creating a water management tool to be used throughout whole mine life cycle. Numerical surface and groundwater modelling has long been established as a tool for reactive management, following collation of yearsÆ worth of data. Now, using freely available remote sensing data and desk study information, analytical modelling techniques can be used cost effectively to provide mining companies with a tool for assessing and managing their water consumption requirements at the outset of a new project venture.The paper includes a selection of case studies to show how the use of analytical modelling can be used as an evaluation and management tool to help not only assess general watershed parameters and water availability but also how it can be used as a tool to provide decision makers with the information to complete æwhat if?Æ scenario assessments. THE year 1930 resembled the preceding one in the coal industry in continuing the era of falling prices and 'of the abandonment of unprofitable mines. Practically all coal prices fell, and in the steam sizes during the last half of the year this was particularly true, due to the small industrial demand. No new mines of any size were opened in the bituminous coal industry, but there was a steady increase in the number of cleaning plants of all kinds built in all fields. It is estimated that at least nine million tons per year were added to the previous total of washed coal. The largest washing plant started during the year was that of the Buckeye Coal Co., at Nemacolin, Pa., with a capacity of 650 tons per hour. Fig. 1 shows - the mixing-bin, conveyor galleries, washing-plant and skip hoist, and Fig. 2 the 120-ft. Dorr thickener for collecting the 48-mesh material from the wash water. Dryers are used for drying the steam coal product. The following statement by J. R. Campbell shows the effect of cleaning on Pittsburgh coal in Greene County: "With the advent of the 650-t.p.h. efficient washing plant in Greene County at the Nemacolin mine of the Buckeye Coal Co., it has undoubtedly been demonstrated that the potential coking-metallurgical coals of the county can be brought within the pale of the highest grade high-volatile coals for steel manufacture. A few months' operation indicates that 9% per cent ash in the raw coal can be easily reduced to under 7 per cent ash in the washed coal and the sulfur from 1.60 per cent in the run of mine to 1.20 per cent sulfur in the washed coal.

Vibration transmitted to the upper limb by the chronic use of hand tools can result in cold-induced vasospasms finger blanching and cyanosis, similar to that seen with Raynaud’s phenomenon (4). These vasospasms, commonly referred to as vibration white finger (VWF), are in part the result of an increased sensitivity of peripheral arteries to the vasoconstricting effects of norepinephrine (e.g., (1-3)). However, alterations in vasodilating factors could also contribute to vasospasms. The goal of these studies was to determine if exposure to a single bout of vibration alters concentrations of the vasodilator, nitric oxide (NO), in a rat tail model of vibration. To determine if vibration exposure alters NO, we exposed animals to a single bout of vibration and measured concentrations of the synthetic enzymes, nitric oxide synthetase (NOS)-1 and NOS-3 in the ventral tail artery. We also directly assessed arterial concentrations of NO using a nitrate/nitrite assay. Methods General apparatus. Animals were placed in Broome-style restrainers, and their tail was secured to a vibrating or stable platform. Rats were exposed to a single 4 h bout of tail vibration (125 Hz, acceleration of 49 m/sec2 r.m.s.) or restraint control. Animals were euthanized with an overdose of pentobarbital (100 mg/kg) and the ventral tail artery was dissected and frozen. Experiment 1: Male Sprague Dawley rats (6 weeks old, n = 32) were used for all exposures. All animals were maintained in AAALAC accredited facilities, and all procedures were approved by the NIOSH Animal Care and Use Committee, and were in compliance with the CDC Regulations for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. Animals were euthanized 1 or 24 h after the completion of the exposure. Western analyses were performed on total proteins (80 µg/lane) isolated from the C16-18 artery segments. Band densities were detected by chemiluminescence and quantified using Scion Image, and analyzed using 2-way ANOVAs. Experiment 2. Nitrate/nitrite concentrations.. Male Sprague Dawley rats (n = 24, 6 weeks of age) were maintained and exposed as described above. All animals were euthanized 24 h after the exposure and the ventral artery was collected. Nitrate/nitrite concentrations were measured in ventral artery tissue homogenates using the nitrate/nitrite colormetric Assay Kit (Caymen). Results Analyses of band densities revealed that there was an effect of time (F(1, 17) = 6.03, p < 0.03) on NOS-1 protein in arteries exposed to vibration, with NOS levels being lower in arteries collected 24 h after the exposure than arteries collected 1 h after the exposure. Although NOS-1 proteins concentrations were slightly lower in control arteries collected 24 h after an exposure than arteries collected 1 h after exposure, post-hoc contrasts indicated they were not significantly different than 1 h controls. In contrast, NOS-1 band densities from arteries collected 24 h after the exposure were lower than those collected 1 h after the exposure (p < 0.01; Figure 1). NOS-3

Fibre-reinforced geopolymer concrete (FRGC) contains no Portland cement or steel reinforcement, but instead uses synthetic fibre reinforcement and a geopolymer binder. The use of geopolymer binder in lieu of Portland cement reduces the concrete’s embedded energy (CO2 emissions) whilst the use of synthetic fibres eliminates the issue of reinforcement corrosion, thus enhancing the overall long-term durability of concrete. This paper presents the development of FRGC during a three-year project funded by the Victorian Science Agenda and a consortium of five organisations. The work involved laboratory and field trials and the production of prototype tunnel segments that have been subject to durability and fire testing.FRGC has exceeded the performance of the Portland cement-based control mix in terms of flexural strength, chloride diffusion, water sorptivity and drying shrinkage. Furthermore, the FRGC segments subjected to a simulated hydrocarbon fire test did not exhibit explosive spalling; however, the creep of FRGC was approximately three times that of the steel fibre-reinforced Portland cement-based control mix. The compressive strength and tensile splitting strength of the FRGC were also lower than the control mix. These differences need to be allowed for in the design using FRGC.Prototype bolted tunnel segments of up to 0.8?t mass have been produced from FRGC using standard production techniques and ambient curing. These were successfully produced within a 24-hour production cycle. Cut sections through the segments showed good compaction and even distribution of fibres. The estimated carbon footprint of tunnel segments produced using FRGC is approximately 70 per cent less than that of Portland cement-based segments containing 25 per cent fly ash and steel reinforcement.The results to date indicate that FRGC has the potential to produce a new generation of tunnel segments and, in general, precast concrete products with increased durability and substantially reduced carbon emissions compared to the Portland cement-based concrete with steel reinforcement.A summary of further research carried out by CH2M HILL into a complete elimination of ferrous inserts from segmental concrete tunnel lining is also summarised in this paper. The use of non-ferrous connectors for radial joints in combination with the FRGC technology in the manufacture of tunnel segments will effectively lead to development of a new generation of segmental tunnel lining systems.CITATION:Wimpenny, D, Chappell, M and Wieloch, M, 2014. Based on full investigation of the characteristic of sphalerite in the residue obtained from cyanidation leaching process and the study of the mechanism of the interaction between flotation reagents and sphalerite with the aid of electrochemical analysis, the reagent named YO was developed for eliminating the depression effect of CN- on sphalerite and reducing the dosage of CuSO4. The achievements have been used in commercial production for the treatment of the cyanidation residue to recover the zinc minerals, obtaining a zinc concentrate with grade of 56.49% Zn and recovery of 86.63% Zn.

This paper outlines a framework for ensuring the success of the implementation phase that follows research and development of new mining technologies and systems. It is based upon recent and past lessons learned that have demonstrated the critical challenges to effective technology transfer, which frequently receive inadequate attention within the culture of the mining business. The paper focuses on mining automation implementation challenges and then outlines a Roadmap which is proposed as an integrated framework to deal with the key aspects of people, process and technology. This framework is built upon: assembly of a Strategic Team to develop a Roadmap; fully understanding the business requirements of the technology initiative; defining Key Performance Indicators in a Balanced Score Card; performing a Stakeholder Analysis to identify the affected groups; and finally developing a master Project Plan to execute the Roadmap.

The Bureau of Mines has devised a procedure to recover chromium chemicals from concentrates derived from low-grade domestic chromites. These domestic chromites contain silicon and aluminum impurities at levels that are too high to permit processing by present industrial processes. The Bureau procedure consists of reacting chromite with molten NaOH under oxidizing conditions to form sodium chromate (Na2Cr04)&apos; The reaction product is leached with methanol to recover the majority of the unreacted NaOH, then with water to extract the Na2Cr04 and the remainder of the NaOH. The Na2Cr04 product is recovered by evaporative crystallization from the aqueous solution. This report presents laboratory results of studies to determine the optimum leaching conditions for the reaction products of several domestic chromite concentrates. Results of solution purification and crystallization studies are also presented. The concentrates are from a variety of sources including the Stillwater Complex in Montana, Red Bluff Bay and the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska, and a Ni-Co laterite from southern Oregon. Sodium chromate crystals were produced that contained less than 0.01 pct NaOH.

Introduction Lime enters our daily life in many ways. Our building, chemical, agricultural, sanitary, and industrial endeavours depend on it to such a great extent that it could probably be called the most important inorganic chemical, and the extent to which it is used might be considered an index of industrial development. Industrial limes vary greatly in quality, due to internal structure and other characteristics. They may be good or bad, sensitive or slow to react. While improper manufacture may not greatly alter the appearance of the lime, it may affect its properties considerably and thus its suitability in the many processes in which lime is used. In some of the processes, one kind of lime is wanted, in others another. While the nature of the stone from which it is made has much to do with whether a lime is suitable or not, its burning and hydration are the crux of the matter. Up to not so many years ago, the knowledge of lime burning was rather imperfect and it is only relatively recently that its manufacture is approaching the state of a higher industrial art. This slow development was in part due to lime manufacture being scattered among many small concerns who, independently, either lacked the inclination or could not afford to strive for a higher technical development.

THE value of any particular ore, coke, or limestone, for iron-making, depends upon its effect, first, upon the quality or value of the resultant product; and second, upon the cost of smelting. The factors under the first head are the percentages of phosphorus, manganese, and other elements, which remain in the pig-iron ; while those under the second head are the percentages of iron, carbon, or lime, the slag-forming constituents, which must be fluxed, and any other ingredients which give rise to variations in cost of fuel and flux. The first of these criteria of value is perhaps not capable of being reduced to a general formula embracing all cases, since it must vary to a great extent with market-fluctuations. For example, Bessemer pig is worth sometimes more and sometimes less than foundry-pig ; and the premium paid for high manganese varies within wide limits. The second, or smelting-value, however, can be expressed numerically with a fair degree of accuracy; and it is with this phase of valuation that the present paper is concerned. The utility of a means of comparing numerically the relative smelting-values of different ores, cokes, and limestones, is self-evident, although it may not have importance in Northern practice, where materials are largely standardized. On the other hand, there are, especially in the South, many furnace-managers who must use a great variety of materials of widely varying grade; and it is with special reference to this district, and in connection with the efficiency-methods which I have elsewhere proposed,1 that the methods herein described were devised.

In November 1986 the Australian Minerals and Energy Council (AMEC) endorsed an "Australian Code for Reporting Identified Coal Resources and Reserves" for use by the Federal and all State Governments. Before this endorsement there were six different coal codes in use in Australia. The code is broad in nature to accommodate the wide range of coal deposits in terms of rank, quality and geological environment, that are present in Australia. In the code, Resources refer to all of the coal in situ which may have potential for use and the various categories indicate the level of confidence of the assessment. Reserves are those Resources which are planned to be mined and for which such planning has been undertaken. Only minimum guidelines are set by the code and the onus is on the estimator to state clearly the criteria used in any Assessment.

Industries are challenged to meet increasingly stringent regulations for selenium and metals. Cost-effective treatment is required to minimize the economic impact of environmental compliance. Low-cost biological treatment of selenium can be achieved passively using biochemical reactor cells composed of natural organic media components such as wood chips, sawdust, hay, composted manure, and peat. The reactor cells create an anaerobic microenvironment for biological reduction and sequestration of selenium and other metals. Biochemical reactors can be combined with constructed wetlands for flow equalization and to remove the organic byproducts in reactor cell outflow. Passive treatment reduces capital cost and operational effort compared to more expensive and complex physical and chemical treatment. Recent pilot and full-scale projects by mining companies and by the US Bureau of Reclamation demonstrate that passive treatment can achieve compliance with selenium concentrations over a range of flows and environmental conditions. Case histories of passive selenium treatment systems and their key findings are provided, and prospects for future applications are summarized.

"Since 1994, Aur Ressources has operated Louvicourt mine, a zinc and copper mine close to Val d’Or, at a rate of 4300 t/d. Ever since the start-up of the plant, management has encouraged innovative approaches in reliability. The first of three papers will discuss the vibration monitoring program in place. The program will be described and two examples will be given: detection of a rolling bearing defect on a pinion driving the ball mill and identification of wear on the bearings of the flotation cells. Figures on the return on investment and the costs of a monitoring program will also be given.The second article will discuss the lubrication aspect. Since the establishment of a good monitoring and oil analyses, Louvicourt mine decreased its oil consumption by more than 38 000 L/yr. In addition, the company set up an oil regeneration system that restores the original properties of oil.The third article will cover the management aspect. Work organization as well as the management philosophy enabling the employes to push predictive technology to higher levels will be examined in detail. The key elements which made it possible for Louvicourt mine to position itself among world-class companies in the organization of maintenance will be discussed."

Electrical apparatus because of its flexibility and its adaptability to all classes of service has become essential to the mining industry. Hence the problem of providing electrical equipment that is safe for use in explosive mixtures of methane and air is of prime importance in coal mining. Ilwestigatorsand experiment stations early recognized this fact and much work has been done in the investigation and the development of electrical apparatus for use in atmospheres containing fire damp. The term "fire damp" as applied throughout this bulletin means an explosive mixture of methane and air. Direct-current motors and alternating-current motors of the slipring type when running usually give off electric arcs or flashes that will ignite fire damp. Other 'motors that ha,'e no moving electric contacts may become dangerous through accident, deterioration, or neglect. Auxiliary apparatus such as fuses, switches, rheostats, and controllers may arc, flash, or become heated to snch a degree that fire damp can be ignited. Such equipment is still more dangerous when worn or out of repair. In the United States the development of apparatus for use in gaseous mines has been associated largely with coal-cutting equipment run by electricity. This is undoubtedly due to the use of such equipment at the face of the mine workings, where the chance of igniting fire damp is necessarily greatest. One American manufacturer built a coal-cutting equipment of the totally inclosed type for use in firo damp atmospheres in 1903. Another built similar equipment with special protective devices in 1906, for export. During the years 1910 and 1911, the Bureau of Mines at its Pittsburgh experiment station conducted a preliminary investigation of the safety of such protection as was then in use or under consideration. Five motors were submitted for this investigation, each having somewhat different methods of protection. The results of this investigation were published in Bulletin No. 4G.a

(Measurements of stable isotopic variations (sulfur, carbon, and oxygen), supplemented by chemical, mineralogical, and petrographic analyses have been used to investigate the processes responsible for : (1) the incorporation of sulfur in coal, and (2) the (development of permineralized peat zones ("coal balls"). Sulfur isotopic results indicate that there are two principal sources of sulfur in the Pennsylvanian coals from the Illinois Basin: (1) "primary" sulfur assimilated by plants (low-sulfur coals), and (2) "secondary" sulfur produced by reactions involving H2S that was produced by the anaerobic reduction of sulfate in seawater which permeated the peat during post-depositional marine transgressions (the dominant source of sulfur in high-sulfur coals). Sulfur isotopic compositions of low-sulfur coals in Several Tertiary basins of Wyoming are consistent with a plant sulfur source. However, the inverse correlation between content and isotopic composition of sulfur observed in coals from the Powder River Basin suggest some "secondary" additions to these low-sulfur coals. Seveeral Quaternary (freshwater pears which were submerged by sea-Level rises during deglaciation over the past 30 ka have sulfur contents and isotopic compositions similar to high-sulfur coals. Carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions of calcareous coal balls from North America and Europe suggest that (1) the carbonate was derived from variable proportions of oxidized plant matter (typically predominant) and inorganic carbonate, and (2) the carbonate minerals were precipitated from fresh-to-brackish waters. Local geochemical and hydrological conditions were apparently more important than regional depositional environments in controlling the source of carbonate and the development of coal balls.

Selective flocculation enables the production of high-brightness kaolin products from kaolin ore once considered too poor in quality for beneficiation into paper-coating pigments. Anatase, Ti(1-X)FeXO2, with X = 0 to 0.05, is a common iron-bearing impurity in sedimentary kaolin that can be unresponsive to kaolin beneficiation processes, such as magnetic separation, due to its extremely fine particle size (<0.3 µm), or chemical bleaching, because of its chemical stability. Described here are selective flocculation technologies that separate anatase by flocculating anatase or flocculating kaolinite from dispersed slurries. Applying the advances in the chemical and mechanical dispersion of ultrafine particles and the selective aggregation of kaolinite or anatase particles have resulted in the selective flocculation processes practiced today that have increased process recoveries from those technologies practiced beginning in the 1960s.
