Compared with the traditional de-NOx processes by cleaning the waste gas, a new approach for reducing the formation of NOx during sintering process is proposed. Since more than 90vol% of NOx comes from the fuel combustion, the influence of sintering coke breeze pretreated by CO(NH2)2 additive on the NOx emission is researched. As adding CO(NH2)2, the reduction agents (NHi) are generated during the pyrolysis of CO(NH2)2, which reinforce the NOx reduction, And the appropriate content of CO(NH2)2 is 1.0 mass% of coke breeze.

"Phosphorite, or phosphate rock, is the most significant secondary rare-earth resource. It contains high amounts of phosphate-bearing minerals along with low contents of rare earth elements (REEs). In Florida, about 19 Mt of phosphate rock are mined annually and most are used to manufacture fertilizers using a wet process, in which sulfuric acid reacts with phosphates to produce phosphoric acid and phosphogypsum. In the wet process, REEs are also leached out into solution and eventually get lost in the leaching residue and phosphate fertilizer. Recovering REEs from Florida phosphate rock in the wet process will be beneficial to broadening rare-earth availability, improving the quality of phosphoric acid product and protecting the environment.This study focuses on the influences of wet-process operating conditions on REE leaching efficiency. The results indicate that REE leaching efficiency increases with phosphoric acid addition in the initial pulp. At a temperature of 75 °C, a stoichiometric ratio of sulfuric acid (H2 SO4 ) to calcium oxide (CaO) of 1.05 and a weight ratio of liquid to solid of 3.5, REE leaching efficiency reached a relatively high value of 52.82 percent. The trends of REE leaching efficiency were similar to those for phosphoric acid (P2O5 ). Extensive tests on the leaching residue showed that during leaching, about 90 percent of the REEs were released from the phosphate rock but only 52.82 percent ended up in the leaching solution. This phenomenon can be attributed to two factors: (1) the effect of phosphate ions (PO4 3-) in the solution, which caused REE ions to form REE phosphates and be precipitated into the leaching residue, and (2) the influence of large amounts of anions such as sulfate (SO4 2-), dihydrogen phosphate (H2 PO4 -) and hydrogen phosphate (HPO4 2-) anions as well as the polar molecule H3 PO4 , which surrounded the REE cations and formed an ion atmosphere that prevented the PO4 3- from contacting and combining with REE cations. Interaction of these two opposite effects determined the REE distribution between leaching solution and residue."

"Early on Jan. 9, 2014, approximately 37,800 L (10,000 gal) of crude 4-methylcyclohexanemethanol (MCHM) leaked from a storage tank sitting on the bank of the Elk River near Charleston, WV (WVDEP, 2014; CSB, 2014). MCHM is a chemical commonly used in preparation of fine coal and is considered nonhazardous in terms of transportation, storage regulations and also toxicity (CDC, 2014a). Freedom Industries Inc., a producer and vendor of specialty chemical products, had acquired the storage facility from Etowah River Terminal, LLC just a few weeks prior in December 2013 (WVDEP, 2014; Freedom, 2005). The direct cause of the spill was ultimately determined to be two small holes in the base of the 76-year-old tank, which were created due to corrosion damage (Bauerlein and McWhirter, 2014).The spill site was located a little more than 1.6 km (1 mile) upstream from the intake of a municipal water treatment facility operated by West Virginia American Water (WVAW), which serves a population of 300,000 across nine counties in central West Virginia (CDC, 2014a). In a matter of hours, the leaked MCHM made its way through the treatment facility and into the water of nearby homes and businesses, where its strong smell was noticed almost immediately. On the evening of the spill, WVAW concluded that its conventional treatment processes, which include carbon filters to remove a variety of contaminants from water, were not capable of fully removing the MCHM and a "Do Not Use" order was issued for all customers (WVAW, 2014a).With little information readily available regarding the potential human health effects of MCHM, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) quickly issued an advisory ruling that set a maximum screening level of 1 ppm for safe drinking water (CDC, 2014a). Based on this recommendation, the "Do Not Use" order remained in effect for a total of eight days, until Jan. 17, when the WVAW distribution water was confirmed to have MCHM concentrations below the approved level (WVAW, 2014a). However, due to the pungent odor of the chemical, its presence was still recognizable in the WVAW facility and in consumers’ tap water after the order was lifted (Manuel, 2014). Recent studies have shown that the chemical can be detected in water at sub-ppb concentrations, a fact that undoubtedly added to growing public concern (Rosen et al., 2014; Gallagher et al., 2014). In response to numerous complaints and demands, WVAW continued flushing the treatment facility and pipes until Feb. 25 when MCHM levels were measured below 2 ppb (WVAW, 2014b), and eventually replaced the affected filter media (WVAW, 2014c)."

Arsenic-gold bearing ores are used as a flux in smelting or leached out to extract gold. To decrease arsenic content in processed materials and to break up the lattice to free the gold, raw materials are roasted. This article analyses the results of laboratory and pilot testing of dissociating and oxidizing roasting of gold-arsenic bearing concentrates. During the dissociation roasting under vacuum arsenic is sublimated into elemental and sulfide forms. The process allows to minimize the negative influence on the environment but requires costly engineering solutions. Roasting in a neutral medium or with limited quantity of oxygen in the gaseous phase makes it possible to sublimate arsenic in the form of oxides and sulfides and may be carried out in the autogeneous mode in fluid bed furnaces. If oxidizing roasting of the concentrates is done in the presence of soda, practically all arsenic and sulfur form water-soluble compounds and remain in cinder.

The purpose of this review is to raise awareness about e-waste problem in the World. Whether generated at our home or our office, e-waste is most rapidly growing waste problem in the world. Even though there are conventional disposal methods (such as landfill and incineration) for e-waste, these methods have both economic and environmental disadvantages; recycling is a new waste management option which diverts end-of-life (EOL) electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) from landfill and incineration [1, 2]. Successful diversion strategy must be based on economic sustainability, technical feasibility and social support [3]. Recycling infrastructure includes transportation, collection, recovery and resale establishments. In 1971 the government of British Columbia issued a permit for the Island Copper Mine to commence disposal of 33,000 tons per day of mine tailings into Rupert Inlet, a marine fjord on the northwest coast of Vancouver Island. There was considerable controversy surrounding the development, public hearings were held, and as a requirement of the permit the company was obliged to carry out a comprehensive environmental monitoring program. The results of this program provide a thorough assessment of the environmental impact of submarine tailings disposal over the 24-year life of the mine. Following closure in December, 1995, the monitoring program continued for three years to determine the extent of marine ecosystem recovery and re-colonization. It is apparent from the findings of the monitoring program that the mine tailings were dispersed more widely than was originally predicted. It is also clear that widespread heavy metal contamination has not materialized. In retrospect it appears that submarine tailings disposal has resulted in far less severe environmental impacts than if the alternative of land disposal had been adopted. This review highlights significant aspects of public policy decision-making, design of environmental monitoring programs, and questions of interpretation of monitoring program data.

"COMMON METHODS OF ELIMINATION: The four methods most frequently used to dispose of cyanide wastes are:1. Oxidation2. Dilution with water or with cyanide free wastes3. Acidification and dilution of resulting gas with air4. Alkaline ChlorinationMost operators practice a combination of the first two methods, allowing oxidation and dilution of cyanide waste in tailings ponds. Then, pond effluent is introduced to a stream for further dilution andoxidation which is expected to take care of the cyanide. This method oftreatment does work to a certain degree. Atmospheric oxidation in tailings ponds and in receiving streams chemically breaks down the cyanide radical to form carbon dioxide and nitrogen.2(CN) + 202 2 CO2 + N2The monetary advantage to this method is obvious to the operator but too frequently though, climatic conditions are ignored. Length of winter, and reduced flow of the receiving stream in summer, adversely restricts the result of this combined method. For those of us who rely mainly on dilution it would be wise to remember that 70 million pounds of water are required to dispose of one pound of sodium cyanide (1).The third method outlined involves addition of acid in a closed vessel and venting resulting gas to atmosphere with or without air dilution by mechanical means. Cost, safety and some form of secondary treatment to complete destruction of cyanide remaining in the solution usually make this method prohibitive.The alkaline chlorination method is the one most commonly accepted for treating cyanide bearing wastes since it is felt that cyanide is completely eliminated in this manner."

This work was done to provide thermodynamic, electrical, physical, and compositional data on the seeded combustion plasmas of seven coals for the design of MHD generators. The systems were assumed to be at equilibrium, and the design data were generated by solving for the composition of both gas and liquid phases with a digital computer. The coals reported in this study include a western subbituminous, a Pennsylvania anthracite, and five representative bituminous coals. The data include dewpoint temperatures of both slag and seed. A Mollier diagram for each coal is given to allow graphical generator calculations.

The Northern Cape Province in South Africa has high levels of annual direct normal solar irradiance and reserves of zinc (Zn) ores. The question arises as to the benefits of integrating renewable solar energy into the beneficiation routes of these reserves. The paper evaluates a novel flowsheet for the production and beneficiation of Zn in this region, maximising localised solar energy as a source for both electricity and process heat. Solar variability is discussed and the cost and benefits of thermal storage in the flowsheets are evaluated by its influence on the levelised costs of electricity and process energy over the project life-time at a possible implementation site. The results of the developed scoping model showed that solar photovoltaic integration to provide electricity for electrowinning without battery storage can lead to more than 10% cost saving on electricity over the lifetime of the project. Additional savings potential was identified when battery storage was included to enable the solar PV system to supply electricity during peak tariff periods. The solar thermal case showed the most promise with savings of 70% on heating costs for casting, while solar PV electricity without storage resulted in a 16% cost saving on heating for casting over the lifetime of the project. Solar PV electricity generation resulted in the avoidance of more than 20% of CO2 emissions from grid electricity use. Solar thermal heating can avoid up to 80% of the CO2 emissions associated with grid electricity use for remelting of Zn cathodes for casting. (member of the committee)- (communication to the Secretary*).-In the discussion of papers presented at the New York meeting of the Institute in February, 1915, and at the Arizona meeting of September, 1916, I referred to the activities of the Bureau of Safety of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., and I am now submitting a few thoughts by members of the staff of that Bureau. TORGUS H. OAAS, Safety Engineer, Butte, Mont.-The report of the Committee on Safety and Sanitation has described different organizations and methods of promoting safety work. The effectiveness of these methods would aid the beginner in his campaign for safety in choosing the kind of organization and methods best adapted for his field. This can he obtained only by a discussion by those who have long promoted this kind of work, and have met with successful results. As the field is new, the different organizations promoting safety work have not established a common basis of rating for their fatal, serious and slight accidents, so that it is now difficult to get a comparative basis from which to judge the merits of the different systems. INTRODUCTION In recent years several cities in the Eastern United States have constructed subway systems in deeply weathered igneous and metamorphic rocks. Portions of these transit tunnels and shafts have penetrated zones of saprolite. The purpose of this paper is to define saprolite and discuss saprolite behavior in terms of construction and design of tunnels and shafts. Saprolites are products of in situ weathering of rock, with properties intermediate between those of soil and rock. A well-developed weathering profile can be divided into zones of residual soil, saprolite, transition zone materials, weathered rock, and fresh rock. Saprolites are distinguished by a high degree of weathering and by retention of parent rock textures and discontinuities. These structures persist as relict features because of iso-volumetric weathering (Cleaves, 1974) and formation of intergranular bonds that give cohesion to the saprolitic material. As saprolite continues to weather, the bonds are broken, causing the saprolite to decompose and disintegrate into a true residual soil mass without relict structure. Saprolites may form from igneous, metamorphic or sedimentary rocks, but are most easily recognized when derived from igneous and metamorphic rocks because of their inherent structures. The physical characteristics and properties of residual material vary as a function of mineralogic composition, structure, and discontinuities of its parent rock.

"A three-dimensional CFD model of a straight grate furnace for indurating iron-oxide pellets was developed for exploring conditions of furnace operation for fluid flow, heat transfer and reactions. The model includes reactions for natural gas combustion in the gas phase and calcination and magnetite oxidation as well as drying in the pellet bed. The performance of the model was investigated with a series of pellet production rates that included adjustments to the fuel rates to achieve proper induration temperatures in the pellet bed. The model may be used to discover opportunities for process improvement.IntroductionIron oxide pellets are a feedstock to blast furnaces for iron making. Pellets require physical strength characteristics needed to maintain their integrity during storage, handling, transportation and smelting. Pellets are produced from iron ore in a series of mineral processing operations that form wet green balls from slurries of iron-ore concentrate with binders, such as bentonite, and possibly fluxing-agents such as limestone and dolomite. The green balls are dried, fired at high temperature, and then cooled in an induration furnace to achieve the strength and chemical composition required for efficient reduction and slag separation in blast furnaces. Induration furnaces are generally straight grates or grate-kilncooler configurations. These furnaces operate with pellet beds passing through a series of temperature zones to control drying and chemical reactions in the bed.Process air passes through the zones in an overall counter flow direction to the pellets for efficient heat transfer and energy recovery from the cooling stage. Consequently, the zone conditions and the overall furnace performance are highly coupled. Thus, it becomes challenging to predict how changes to any single zone may affect the rest of the furnace. To gain a better understanding of machine performance and coupling, a three-dimensional, steady-state model of a complete straight grate induration furnace was created using computational fluid dynamics (CFD)."

The coal-bearing strata of Oklahoma occur in the eastern part of the state over an area of 14,500 square miles, 20.7 percent of the state's total area. Commercially valuable deposits of bituminous coal cover about 8,000 square miles in seams ranging from ten inches to five feet thick. Estimated reserves in Oklahoma are 1.6 billion tons, representing 0.3 percent of U.S. coal reserves. The vast majority of coal mined in Oklahoma used in a single power plant within the state. Oklahoma gained primacy when its regulatory program was conditionally approved January 19, 1981. Authority for the state to administer the Abandoned Mine Land program was granted January21,1982. On April 30,1984, the Office of Surface Mining substituted direct federal enforcement of the inspection and enforcement portions of the Oklahoma program. This substituted enforcement was based upon a finding by OSM that Oklahoma had not operated the inspection and enforcement portions of its program effectively. As of January 1, 1986, Oklahoma inspection and enforcement authority was reinstated. Full program authority was granted to Oklahoma on January 14, 1986.

"There has been a revolution occurring in underground mining over the last several years, where big headline items such as the Internet of Things (IoT), optimisation, managing data, data mining etc – the list of current catchphrases, goes on. In the end these are nothing new; but the ‘things’ (sensors) are becoming smaller, cheaper and easier to deploy, and the analysis much more powerful as computer processing speeds increase. However, to take advantage of the myriad of devices out there and gain the processing power to analyse and use the data, a reliable ‘conduit’ is needed for that information to be delivered where it can actually be used. That is, a high quality data network.Modern mining is like any other industry in the information age: the access to reliable data is the first, critical step in improving productivity (Stevens, 2015). The convergence of communications onto an IP (Internet Protocol) backbone has been the driving force in enabling the productivity gains in general industry over the last two decades.This paper overviews how this technology has developed as an enabler in accessing productivity and safety benefits, and how it has used access to large amounts of data to manage mining processes underground. Reams of data are useless, but with the reliable receipt, analysis, processing and feedback system in place to use that data, benefits can be realised.Automated mining systems are increasingly being seen as a key requirement for a productive mining operation, and the importance of an integrated communication network infrastructure to support such systems is growing. Another emerging driver is the much talked about IoT and data analytics, both dependant on reliable, accurate, high volume data.The author will outline how communication infrastructure is fundamental to the operation of such systems, and explain why the resultant communication networks require much more than just increased bandwidth (data capacity) to properly support the automation and other data hungry systems within the overall mine operation.Mining operations embarking down this road are discovering that the required network must be based on a true enterprise level architecture to, not only enable the mine’s current plans for remote or automated mining, but also to provide a scalable and integrated platform for future developments. The emerging issues for the communication network to truly support automation systems include: increased complexities of operating and maintaining multiple networks integration issues with disparate systems problems with reporting, particularly as demands for corporate reporting and compatibility with enterprise systems become the norm ongoing management challenges, which will only increase with the proliferation of new technologies.How certain mining operations lay the necessary foundations to meet their current requirements, while supporting their visions for a more automated and proactively managed mine, will be explored.CITATION:Kent, D, 2017. Investigation of an extensive deposit of chromite-bearing actinolite-talc schist situated on the summit of Casper Mountain, 10 miles south of Casper, Wyo., was one of the first projects Undertaken by the Bureau of Mines under the Strategic Materials Act (Public 117, 76th Cong., Ch. 190, 1st sess.), for which an appropriation became available August 9, 1939. During the previous summer; the Geological Survey? made? a magnetometrical survey of the area in which the schist occurred. It was exposed in several small lenses and two larger ones aggregating about 19?acres in area. Although the occurrence of chromite here had been known for many years, the only work done on the deposit was the digging of? a few shallow pits on some of the more promising outcrops. From August 23 to December 3, 1939, the Bureau of Mines investigated the larger of the two main schist bodies. Twenty-four trenches having a total length of 8,073 feet were dug across the deposit, and its subsurface extension was explored by 3,623 feet of diamond drilling. Over 32 tons of samples were shipped to the Metallurgical Division of the Bureau of Mines at Reno, Nev., for reduction, analysis, and ore testing. In all, there were 853 individual samples. Geological maps, based upon examination of outcrops, trenches, and drill cores, as well as a contour map of the area were made by the Geological Survey.

The ownership, management and employment structures operating in the Australian minerals industry have dynamically evolved during the last 30 years. One of the most dramatic changes, from an exploration and mining geology perspective, is the reduction of in-house geological expertise and an ever increasing reliance on contract and consulting services.For all companies - big and small - two key issues resulting from these changes are the management of core geological intellectual property (IP) and competitive advantage. This is because there are less experienced geologists at exploration and mine sites, there are fewer head-office technical service teams to support mine sites, exploration teams are smaller with less specialists employed, and there is an ever-greater dependence on contract and consulting services.This paper reviews and explores these issues with an industry-wide geological context, then provides a case study of how Newcrest Mining Limited (Newcrest) has dealt with these issues in exploration. Newcrest has grown from a one-mine company with an Australian exploration focus, to a large global company with multiple operations and an extensive international exploration portfolio. The original and most basic relationship between mining company and explosive supplier was a simple one of consumer and product supplier. The divide between the two was quite clear-cut with neither taking much interest in the activities of the other. The explosive supplier had little understanding or share in the outcome, efficient rock breakage and therefore impact on mining and milling. Likewise, the mining company did not encourage the improvement or development of products. The transactions were limited to product and funds. This environment does not encourage any form of knowledge sharing, trust or optimisation of the mining process.Conversely, there are now a variety of relationships to the point that the mining company may simply be an asset manager whereby all æoperationalÆ aspects are contracted out. For the drill and blast aspect this takes the form of a æRock-On-GroundÆ contract whereby the explosives company takes on design, drill, load and fire responsibilities and is paid a rate per volume of broken rock. This removes the majority of risk to the mining company derived from having to produce broken rock and guarantees the cost of a portion of the overall unit cost of mining. The onus is now on the explosives supplier to break rock to a specification as efficiently as possible.There exist a number of variations between the æbasic supplyÆ and æRock-On-GroundÆ. These contracts may also include value sharing to encourage the explosive supplier to optimise the mining operation to maximise profit.This paper looks at some of the drivers for the change in explosive supplierûconsumer relationships and examines the æprosÆ and æconsÆ of a few of the options.
