The relationship between coal characterization and physical cleaning has not been well understood due to the complex nature of coal. Therefore, it is difficult to apply the results of coal characterization to predict and evaluate the performance of a physical separation (e.g. flotation). Eight U.S. bituminous coals were analyzed and studied petrographically in conjunction with washability and flotation tests. The results show that grindability correlates to ash and fixed carbon contents; liberation determined directly by petrographic techniques is close to liberation determined indirectly by washability; and an ideal separation efficiency can be determined by measuring the inertinite content and the washability separation efficiency using a heavy liquid with a density of 1.4. The ideal separation efficiency was attained for most coals by packed column flotation. The ideal separation efficiency can be used for comparing process technologies and process parameters.

This discussion is concerned with those com-J- paratively infrequent bumps that eject material from the failed mass with enough energy to wreck heavy machinery and seriously injure or kill people. In such cases there is a loud report, and the pressure waves set up in the mine atmosphere wreck ventilation controls several hundred feet from the site of the failure. Vibrations are induced in the earth's crust which may be detected several miles from the point of origin, and explosive gases may be released in large quantities." Usually a dense suspension of dust is produced from the failed mass, together with dust placed in suspension by the resulting air blast. These rock bursts or bumps have also been called mountain shots, bounces, pillar bursts, and crumps. Such occurrences, when extensive, are serious catastrophes, and may force abandonment of the mine.' CAUSES OF ROCK BURSTS Rock bursts in coal mines have occurred in sev-eral places under diverse geological conditions, mining methods, and/or practices. A study of many such occurrences indicates that they depend on the following conditions: 1) cover thickness of 500 ft or more, 2) cover composed of strong members and having a strong member lying close to or on the coal bed, and 3) a floor that does not readily heave. The minimum thickness of cover under which coal mine rock bursts occur is based on observation. Under unusual circumstances involving very strong roof members and/or mining systems, and/or practices especially likely to induce bursts, a burst conceivably could occur under less roof. Under special circumstances rock bursts have occurred in marble quarries almost at the surface.' Furthermore, under very heavy cover it is likely that controlling roof members need not be as strong and as close to the coal bed to cause bumps. Just what constitutes a strong roof or roof member is open to question. Obviously the strength of a roof member is determined by its thickness, the distance between bedding planes across which little or no bond exists, the spacing and development of joints, and the inherent strength of the rock material. Strata sections showing roofs under which rock bursts in coal mines have developed are illustrated in Fig. 2. In several instances the strength of rocks composing the roof of mines developing bumps has been tested. The tests (Table I) show that these rocks develop considerable strength in compression, bending, and shear and that in some cases the strengths are very high. No quantitative data are available concerning joints in roof members over coal beds where rock bursts have occurred, but the author has examined many mines subject to bursts and has received the impression that joints in the shales immediately over the coal beds are always present and well developed. In the main sandstone or conglomerate members themselves, however, where observed, he has yet to see a fracture system indicating well developed joints. Undoubtedly joints are present, but the evidence indicates that they are few, poorly developed, and widely spaced. In a mine subject to bumps, moreover, actual measurements of roof spans up to 225 ft between supports under a cover of about 800 ft have been made before roof failure occurred. Such spans signify strong roof. In coal beds subject to rock bursts, the bottom rock is usually a sandy shale. A few tests (Table I) have been made on the floor rock of coal beds. Observations in mines indicate that they are usually weaker than roof rocks and that under load they show more plastic effects. Observation in ground subject to bursts invariably indicates a relatively strong floor highly resistant to heaving, although some heaving may occur. Other factors listed as favorable to rock bursts are: 1) mountainous surface; 2) steeply dipping beds; 3) proximity of faults, folds, and other similar geologic structures. Many bursts have occurred in mines under mountainous country, although many bursts in mines under a surface with little relief indicate that thickness of cover, not relief, is the essential factor. In steeply dipping beds, many bursts occur in mines that are essentially flat, and rock bursts have been recorded in beds dipping as much as 35o Most rock bursts in the U. S. occur in beds that dip less than 10 pct. It is also true that most U. S. coal is produced from beds dipping less than 10 pct. Geologically, faults are regarded as providing stress relief, but in the vicinity of faults, as well as sharp folds, it would seem that residual stresses could be present. The fact that rock bursts occur in areas remote from faults and sharp folds suggests that their presence is not necessary for this phenomenon to take place. There have been many bursts close to faults and folds, and it may be assumed that occasionally such structures accentuate their occurrence3 The conditions and circumstances under which they occur, coupled with the effects produced, leave In the Crowsnest Pass coalfield, British Columbia, a rock burst is estimated to have released 1.8 million cu ft of methane.

The VoD of non-ideal explosives depends on the charge diameter and the thickness, strength and sound velocity of the confiner. VoD measurements are made to evaluate explosives for development, quality control and prediction of field performance. In testing, the container is part of the explosive system and affects the measured VoD. Pipe testing in cardboard tubes delivers the best guide to unconfined critical diameter and minimum VoD range, but the thickness of the pipes affects the result close to critical diameter, even in emulsions. PVC pipes are not good for unconfined test work because they provide relatively strong confinement. Care must be taken to select pipes with constant relative pipe area across the range of diameters. Where pipes are used to evaluate the effect of confinement, the ratio of the wall thickness relative to the thickness of the detonation driving zone in the explosive needs to exceed 0.5 to create full confinement and the ratio of the detonation velocity to the confiner wave speed must be considered. Estimates for critical thicknesses are provided from Non-Ideal detonation models. The relationship between confinement modulus and VoD is discussed and indexes are suggested for quantifying the explosive performance.

Under drastically deteriorated situations, diesel equipment was introduced to some of local coal mines, aiming at higher productivity and better safety. To accommodate various diesel equipment in conventionally developed mines, mining system itself had to be modified; much larger trackless haulage ways were excavated. Possible health hazards of diesel not taken into account at the beginning become a serious concern and effective control measures are being searched for. The purpose of this paper is to study the diffusion characteristics of diesel exhaust in local coal mines. One of the parameters affecting dispersion of diesel contaminants is the coefficient of turbulent diffusion. Since CO2 is known to be closely correlated with other contaminants such as CO, NO, NQ, SO2 and RCD, it was chosen as a tracer gas in a series of dispersion experiments. A large diesel passage as well as a conventional track haulage way were the sites for the experiments. Rectangular dispersion pulses were generated for 30 ~60 seconds and CO2 concentrations were recorded at several locations 50~190 m downwind. The diffusion coefficients calculated graphically vary between 0.10~0.48 m2/s at both haulage ways. The results are analyzed to find any correlation with the air velocity and the distance from the disperser. Analytical laboratories require a qualitative or semi-qualitative method of determining major and minor constituents in "unknown" samples to select optimal analytical techniques. This is exceedingly important in precious metal assay laboratories where the precision and accuracy requirements are exacting (routinely within 0.02%, absolute basis). This paper describes the use of an x-ray fluorescence spectrometer with a specially designed software package to select optimal analytical procedures and specify relevant analytical parameters. A wavelength dispersive XRF spectrometer is capable of quick and accurate analyses of properly prepared samples without extensive standardization. When coupled with a specially designed software package, this preliminary assay system is applicable to a wide variety of sample types including gold and silver bullion, karat gold and karat PGM alloys, high silver and high copper metallic samples as well as particulate samples of ores and sweeps. The system relieves the assayer of tedious calculations for silver inquartation and proofing, minimizes human error and standardizes selections over time. Most importantly, the system allows for independent verification of final assay results.

Underground mining in the Bowen Seam has shown that the majority of outbursts have co- incided with faults, igneous dykes and sills, stone roof rolls or some combination of these. The coal measures are deformed principally by N- S trending, easterly dipping thrusts presumed to he associated with the major, reverse Collins- ville Fault. The old Collinsville State Mine records suggest that thrusts and strike-slip faults have been common sites of outbursts. In contrast, normal faults have not been outburst- prone. Detailed geological mapping in Bowen No. 2 Colliery 53 east and west panels has been carried out in the hanging wall of a thrust zone of 6.1 m throw. The associated sheared coal has been defined and several fracture sets delin- eated. Sheared coal can be observed up to 170 m from this thrust zone, but this is dependent on the vitrinite content of the upper seam section worked. Fvidence indicates that outbursts have crnrroJ only in extremely sheared coal. Curious spherical- to cylindrical-shaped c,,.31 ohjects ("apples" and "rods") are related to the deformation in the vicinity of the thrust zone. The previous papers have been concerned only with the atmospheric oxidation of coals from the Barnsley Seam, for which it has been shown that an adequate explanation of the origin and nature of gob-fires can be based on the reaction between the coal itself and the oxygen of the air without the intervention of any other substance. It becomes of importance, therefore, to ascertain how far a similar explanation will hold good for spontaneous heating in other seams, and with this object in view samples including anthracite and lignite have been taken from a considerable number of pits in different parts of the UK (south Wales, Northumberland and Durham, north Staffordshire, Portrush and Ayrshire), some liable to fire, others not. There is abundant evidence to support the commonly-accepted view that spontaneous heating is due to the heat evolved during the absorption of oxygen from the air by coal or pyrites. The quantity of heat produced by the reaction has been measured and it has been shown that the observed rate of heating of a sample of coal agrees with the rate calculated from the heat of reaction and the rate of absorption of oxygen

"Bauxite has been the almost universal ore of aluminum for about 100 years, with most of the world's reserves oc¬curring in the developing countries. As a result of fiscal and political activities prompted in part by the energy crisis, the formation of the IBA combined with increasing freight and labour costs, these reserves are no longer as competitive or as secure as they once were. This has given fresh impetus to the development of processes for alumina production that utilize raw material other than bauxite. Canada has no bauxite and it is prudent to look for alter¬native raw materials within our own boundaries suitable for one of these processes.Of the three igneous rocks that have been used as a source of alumina, only anorthosite is considered as a potential source in Canada. The Al content would be extracted by a sinter process, which currently requires a raw material with a. minimum of 28% Al2O2. Thus, about 4 tons of anorthosite and 10 to 12 tons of limestone are needed to produce one ton of alumina. There are two petrologically distinct types of anorthosite, one containing the plagioclase andesine-labradorite and around 26% Al2O3, and the other containing upwards of 30% Al2O3, in by¬townite-anorthite; for our purposes they may be con¬sidered as low- and high-alumina anorthosite respectively. The high-alumina anorthosites are somewhat rare; the low-alumina anorthosites are much more common, partic¬ularly in Eastern Canada. Geologically speaking, there is no shortage of anorthosite in Canada. The reserves are im¬mense, although their low Al2O3 content coupled with con¬siderations of location, access and proximity to limestone could be constraints to their development. Fly ash from coal-fired thermal power stations and nepheline syenite can also be used in a sinter process, but neither is likely to be utilized in Canada in the immediate future.The H+ process utilizes an acid attack to leach Al from a raw material with at least 20% Al2O3. One of the best raw materials is kaolinite-bearing clay; not only is it high in Al, but most of it can be extracted. With the possible exception of the Whitemud clay in Saskatchewan, Canada is apparently deficient in clays with sufficient reserves to support an alumina plant utilizing the H+ process. Low-alumina clays with illite and montmorillonite may also prove to be a suitable raw material if advantageously sited with respect to industrial centers. The average shale con¬tains only 15% Al2O33, much of which may be contained in minerals, such as feldspar, not amenable to acid leaching. If shale is used as a source of alumina, it will be because it contains some other valuable commodity, such as oil or uranium, the extraction of which leaves the spent shale upgraded in extractable Al2O3 and lowers the over-all costs to a point where it is economic, Thus, rejects from coal washing plants are most commonly considered as a source of alumina; they are already mined, are available in large and ever increasing amounts, and may contain significant amounts of combustible material which upgrades the Al2O3, content of the resulting ash. Coal rejects from existing and developing coalfields in Alberta and British Columbia are a possible source of raw material, but present data indicate they may contain insufficient Al2O3."

"INTRODUCTION The idea of direct steel is by no means new. Although the work of Bessemer and Siemens provided simple and effective moans for converting pig iron into steel and established the ""blast-furnace route"" as the almost universal method of producing steel, metallurgists have not ceased to dream of direct steel. By direct steel is meant any process by which iron oxide in ore is reduced to Iron of the same or greater purity than the final steel or wrought iron. That is, carbon or alloying elements would be added as needed, not reduced in unwanted quantities into the iron and then removed more or completely by refining (Bessemer or open hearth) only to be readded in desired quantities.In general, direct-steel processes are ""sponge-iron"" processes, because reducing iron oxide without simultaneously alloying the iron with carbon, phcophorus, sulfur, and silicon present in ore and fuel succeeds only if the temperature is below the melting point of the iron. Such solid iron formed by reduction of iron oxide at relatively low temperature is sponge iron, which is butlery and porous. When the reduction proceeds at the higher temperature at which the particles of metal can weld together or finally even melt to yield pellets or balls that do not have the porosity and low-density characteristic of sponge iron, the product might preferably be called simply ""direct iron."""

Booster fans in underground coal mines are often located using the concept of a neutral point. Normally, intake airways are maintained at higher absolute pressure than return airways, so air leaks from intake to return. By adding a significant pressure force to a region of a ventilation system, booster fans installed in a return airway can increase the pressure in the return so that air leaks from return to intake. This is commonly referred to as recirculation. The neutral point occurs at the location in the system where the pressure difference between the intake and the return airway(s) is zero and at this point there is no leakage or recirculation. Ideally, placing a booster fan near the neutral point minimizes leakage and recirculation; however, in practice the position of the neutral point is not static and it changes as the ventilation system parameters change. This paper presents a study of how changes in the system parameters affect the location of the neutral point in a model coal mine ventilation system. First the effects of booster fan pressure and location on the neutral point are evaluated. Next the effect of increasing mine distance, and therefore mine resistance, on the location of the neutral point and the magnitude of recirculation is evaluated.

By American tradition, if not by rational decision, publicly owned natural resources have been transferred to private industry for processing. The process of transfer requires specific determination of the price which the patentee, buyer, or lessee must pay to the government in exchange for the right to develop a resource, and selection of the patentee, buyer, or lessee from among several possible contestants. Pricing of natural resources owned by the government presents a set of problems quite different from ordinary commodity pricing. Natural resources in situ are not homogeneous commodities. Within any class of natural resources, specific leasable parcels will differ in value by reason of location and accessibility, as well as quality and quantity. Thus, there is no "going price;" every lease within a specific resource class will have a different value. To complicate further the pricing and buyer selection problems, competition may not be reliable. Natural-resource markets are characterized by oligopsony conditions. In a significant number of cases, as will be shown later, there has been only one bidder for a given lease, and in most lease sales the number of bidders is equal to or less than three. As a further complication, there is great uncertainty regarding the value of specific resources, even among the best-informed buyers, as well as within the leasing agency. In some instances, particularly with regard to oil and gas resources, there may be uncertainty about the presence of resources, as well as the quantity and quality of any resources contained in the tract offered for lease. In other cases, such as oil shale and some deep ocean minerals where new technologies are involved, the presence of the resource is clearly established. There may be a relatively high degree of knowledge about the quantity and quality of the resource, but there is great uncertainty concerning the cost of production. These problems in total make it difficult for the leasing agency to appraise accurately the resource to be leased, as well as for the potential bidder to calculate a bid price that will yield him a normal profit. The pricing goal of the federal government as the seller or lessee may be to capture the economic rent; that is, the price of a resource might equal its discounted present value. A required price substantially above this amount would either generate no bids, or, in the long run, would bankrupt the buyer. A price below this amount is a disguised subsidy to the lessee. A subsidy to mineral lessees, as to any other economic interest group, as a minimum should be justified by a clear showing of net external benefits from the economic activity. In the case of timber sales by the U.S. Forest Service, the Forest Service Handbook asserts that "the aim in national forest stumpage appraisal is to determine market value,"8 and "market value" is equated to "fair market value." Titanium is a metal of increasing worldwide strategic importance. The Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing (CAMP) at Montana Tech of the University of Montana is currently directing two titanium research initiatives. The first program, Titanium Extraction Mining and Process Engineering Initiative (TEMPER), is focused on producing low cost titanium through the identification and development of new mining, beneficiation and extraction technologies which will significantly reduce the cost of titanium production. This will directly benefit worldwide commercial applications. Secondly, CAMP is evaluating new technologies for fabrication of titanium utilizing the Free Form Titanium Fabrication (FFTF) initiative. These technologies may drastically reduce the cost and time to manufacture titanium components. Because of the high strength to weight ratio of titanium coupled with its superior corrosion characteristics, these programs will be of vital importance to expanding the commercial and strategic applications of titanium. An overview of these two new titanium initiatives will be presented in this paper.

"The thermochemical technology for recovery gold, silver from mature flotation tailings of pyrite ores by two-stage sintering with chlorine-ammonium reagents and leaching of bakes with water is developed. The economic effect of the technology implementation is calculated. KEYWORDS Gold and silver recovery, mature flotation tailings, pyrite ores, chlorine-ammonium reagents, leaching INTRODUCTION The relevance of processing the technogenic reserves of ore mining and concentration wastes accumulated over the long operation periods of mineral deposits is beyond doubt. Hundreds of tons of precious and non-ferrous metals that were not recovered during the primary processing are concentrated in the accumulated wastes. For example, tailing storage facilities (TSF) at the mineral processing plants in the Southern Urals region of Russia hold more than one hundred tons of gold and thousands of tons of silver in the mature flotation tailings (MFT) of copper pyrite ores. Secondary processing of technogenic materials is facilitated by the fact that they are preprocessed — ground and compactly deposited on the surface, but complicated by the low (compared to ores) grade, uneven distribution of the valuable minerals, altered and unstable material composition of the mineral feed. This leads to low recovery rates of valuable metals by conventional physicochemical processing methods. It is necessary to develop innovative methods of deep integrated processing of industrial wastes, based on the study of the material composition of specific technogenic mineral resources and based on ensuring the environmental safety of the resulting secondary waste. MATERIALS AND METHODS The object of this study are the MFT of Uchaly Concentrator in the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia, which processes copper pyrite and copper-zinc ores. According to the data of particle size, chemical, X-ray phase, and optical microscopic analyzes, samples of the MFT are characterized by considerable particle fineness (the fraction of the size class -41 µm is 89-90%), low grade of gold (1.7-2.0 g/t) and silver (18.0-19.5 g/t), comparable grades of iron (23.0-26.8%) and sulfur (28.1-28.7), but different grades of copper (0.12 - 0.73%) and zinc (0.34-1.26%). The most common mineral in the samples is pyrite (50 - 56%), found in intergrowth with grains of other sulfides (0.1-4%) - sphalerite, tennantite, chalcopyrite, covellite. Quartz and aluminosilicates are the dominant rock minerals (21-36%). Based on the results of the phase analysis, it was established that approximately 70% of the gold in the samples is found in a form that is resistant to cyanidation — it is locked in sulfides (52-56%) and quartz and coated by films. Along with sulfides and rock minerals, common gold and silver minerals (chalcogenides, intermetallides, native gold) in the form of submicro- and nano-sized precipitates are also associated with intergrowth of a complex structure. These features of the material composition allow classifying the MFT of the pyrite ores as a mature feed material and emphasize the need for chemical non-cyanide methods to recover gold and silver from the mature minerals and associations they are found in."

Data regarding the composition and physical properties of Florida land-pebble phosphate-waste slime are presented, and the feasibility of dewatering and beneficiating the slime by several different methods is discussed. Chemical analyses, electron micrographs, and X-ray diffraction data showed that principal constituents of the slime included quartz, attapulgite, and flaorapatite. Viscosity of the slime changed with pH; thixotropic, Newtonian, and rheopectic states were observed as the pH increased. Use of various flocculating agents was not effective in improving thickening properties of the slime. Dewatering tests using pressure filtration showed that temperature influenced the filtration rate more than pressure; the filtration rate at 165° C was tenfold that at room temperature. Selective flotation of the slime, using two different processes, gave promising results. About 25 pct of the phosphate was recovered in a concentrate assaying 31 pct P205, Other tests demonstrated that the slime could be successfully fractionated at 20-microns using a hydrocyclone. In hydrometallurgical tests about 80 pct of the phosphorus and alumina were chemically extracted from the slime using sulfuric acid. Limited bacteriological studies made of the slime showed that several types of microorganisms were present and grew in the material despite the presence of fluorine-bearing minerals.

Carbon sequestration in planted forests provides an immediately available, low cost option to address the greenhouse impacts of coal mining and coal utilisation in a carbon constrained world. In addition, planted forests also offer the opportunity to address other environmental issues, particularly salinity and loss of biodiversity. Given salinity is characteristically associated with agriculture in the 500 to 700 mm rainfall belt, then where such forests can also produce commercial timber products, they offer the additional opportunity to establish new, diversified rural employment in both timber growing and processing. In the majority of Australian catchments affected by salinity, where rainfall is generally less than the 700 mm limit to conventional forestry, and where groundwater reserves are often saline, the objective of achieving economically viable forestry production presents a significant challenge. In 1996, Saltgrow commenced a collaborative breeding program to combine the salt and stress tolerance of E camaldulensis, with the growth rate, stem form and wood properties of the commercial species, E grandis and E globules. This program aimed to produce trees with the potential for commercial rehabilitation of saline landscapes. Results covering a range of site conditions from SaltgrowÆs network of over 100 trials around Australia are presented. The opportunity for commercial plantations integrated with agriculture in low to medium rainfall areas to address salinity and sustainability will be discussed. In addition, the significant potential for partnerships between land-rich, cash-poor farmers, catchment management authorities seeking to invest in public good projects that enhance environmental sustainability, and major carbon producing industries with either mandated or voluntary requirements to curtail net emissions will also be discussed.

Before 1914 , Chile , because of her extensive resources of natural nitrates , practically monopolized the world markets for one of the leading fertilizer materials . Since nitrogen also is an important war material , constituting in fact the principal ingredient in many high-powered explosives , the World War and the widespread insistence upon national self- sufficiency for war materials brought about the development of nitrogen fixation plants in all of the larger countries . The production of by- product ammonia from gas and coke plants was likewise stimulated . As a result , Chile , even after the ocean lanes were reopened , was forced to fight for her lost markets . Since the world capacity to produce is still far in excess of annual consumption , the competition between natural and synthetic supplies has been keen and prices have fallen below pre-war levels . Chile has recently succeeded in unifying her industry , utilizing the most efficient process now in operation, and the Government is a partner in the new company that will take over all of the present producing companies . These developments place Chilean nitrate of soda , in a much more favorable position among the markets of the world . More intense competition will undoubtedly follow and , in order that those interested may become familiar with the fields upon which the nitrogen conflicts of the near future may be waged , the following general summary of the nitrogen industry has been prepared .

Since the late 19405, St. Joe has operated rubber-tired, trackless mining equipment underground in its Southeast Missouri Lead Belt operations. At first, the trackless equipment was operated in conjunction with rail haulage equipment in the room-and-pillar operations, but was to later replace rail haulage completely. The first pieces of equipment to travel on pneumatic rubber tires were short-haul shuttle cars of 12-ton capacity hauling rock from the heading to the mainline railroad. Early-model drill jumbos were the next pieces of production equipment to be carried on rubber, along with mobile slusher ramps. Mobile diesel equipment, in the form of conventional rear-dump trucks, made its appearance underground in the early 1950s, introducing the era of relatively high-speed mobile equipment as compared to the electrically powered shuttle cars. Haulage distances for rubber-tired vehicles were no longer dictated by trolley lines and trailing cables and tires were subjected to increasingly severe applications. St. Joe's first completely trackless mine, the Hayden Creek Mine, was opened in 1952, employing rubber-tired drill jumbos, electric shuttle cars, and for the first time, an articulated diesel truck consisting of the tractor unit of a conventional earthmoving scraper and a rear-dump rock wagon. Those machines rolled on the first true earthmover tires to be used underground by St. Joe. The articulated truck concept proved to be very successful, and constitutes an In- creasing portion of the underground haulage today.

The sillimanite group includes the aluminosilicate minerals sillimanite, kyanite and and alusite, all of which have the same chemical composition (Al2SiO5). This discussion also includes the closely related mineral, mullite(about Al6Si3O15), which, although rare in nature, is produced artificially for industrial use. All of the minerals in this group have a low coefficient of thermal expansion and high corrosion resistance. This makes them desirable for refractory applications, especially in the steel and foundry industries. Other uses include electrical insulators, abrasives and household ceramic products. The minerals in the sillimanite group decompose with an irreversible expansion at temperatures between 1,300° C and 1,600° C (2,372° F and 2,912° F). Sillimanite and and alusite have relatively small expansion on decomposition (4 percent to 6 percent) and, therefore, can be used as aggregates in refractory products. Kyanite’s expansion on decomposition is large (18 percent). So it is sometimes used to balance shrinkage of other materials such as clays in refractory mixtures. For applications requiring high-temperature volume stability, mullite is more desirable. As an additive, mullite improves resistance to creep and corrosion, and imparts thermal and electrical insulating properties.
