"INTRODUCTION This report is the second of a series of studies of analysis of energy requirements and characteristics of various machines used in the production of coal in underground mines and the losses in distribution of energy to these machines. The test equipment used in these studies is described in Report of Investigations 3615. 7/ The preliminary study data and results of tests made on various types of mechanical-leading cutting, and transporting equipment at two mines. This report is analysis of the energy requirements of the energy requirements of the underground equipment of a third mine. An analysis of the use of energy and its distribution usually requires in a saving in energy consumption and the reduction of hazards. The distribution system should be designed to supply energy effectively and study for the efficient operation of all machines."

THE Alaska Juneau mine has been developed through an adit driven at the elevation of the top of the mill and all mining is done above this main haulage level. As a result of wholesa1e"mining operations about 11,000 tons rock containing one dollar' per ton in gold is, hauled to the. concentrator during every 24 hr. Due to the method of mining, whereby a system of oreways delivers-the.ore direct from the stope to the bottom level of the mine, no tramming of ore is done on any of the upper levels. However, ;in doing exploratory drifting and crosscutting on the upper levels, the broken material is trammed by hand in 1-ton 18-in. gage cars to a nearby raise connecting with one of the several oreways. This constitutes the only tramming operation except that on the main level.

This paper discusses the technical and cost benefits of alternative data collection techniques used to collect lithological information, obtain laboratory testing samples and perform in situ testing. A comparison between diamond coring and sonic coring techniques is made using data from a recent geotechnical investigation for a final pit slope cut-back. The impacts of the coring method on laboratory strength testing results, material character testing and, ultimately, the mass strength parameters and subsequent slope design adopted are compared. The sonic coring method was chosen out of necessity and enabled the collection of tube samples of a clay unit of interest as well as bulk samples for material character and geochemical testing. The sonic coring generated unexpected degradation of clastic units, while cohesive clay-dominated units were recovered well. The likelihood that disturbance due to the coring method would result in lower than expected triaxial strength results was recognised ahead of time, with surplus samples collected and single-stage triaxial strength testing undertaken. This testing compared favourably with historic three-stage testing, where sample degradation occurred during the later stages. Material character testing of fine-grained, clay-dominated units was comparable with historic diamond core testing, while grain size estimates for more clastic units tended to be finer than previous results. The use of sonic coring over non-cored methods enabled the collection of material texture data, geotechnical properties and a full suite of geochemical analyses. This provided a comprehensive understanding of the lithological and geotechnical character of the rock and soil mass. A high-confidence geotechnical model was developed. The end result was the development of a slope design that was more aggressive than was previously designed (5° steeper inter-ramp angle), which has proven to be appropriate to the conditions following excavation. I DESIRE to present this evening a few notes from the standpoint of a manufacturer upon the subject of tests of iron for structural purposes; not that I have any new facts to which to call your attention, but rather a statement of a few of the objectionable features of the present modes of operation, showing the absolute necessity of important and very radical changes. At the present time, as most of you are well aware, proposals for materials are accompanied by certain specifications as to quality and tests to which the manufactured article must conform. Evolved in many cases from the inner consciousness of some one more expert in theory than in practice, we find a few of the specifications to be good, many bad, and some indifferent. Appended are specimens of specifications of the most prominent engineers and railroad companies, which may be taken as representing the best and most intelligently framed specifications which we now have, arid yet in some pints scarcely satisfactory, owing to misunderstanding of tests as now made. To show the very varied opinions held as to proper quality of iron for bridge-work, I give the tests of two lots of fron made by inspectors with the results, which were referred to the maker with the following commensts : Lot No. 1. Bardon Trimount Inc., a large producer of aggregate, crushed stone, and concrete, was experiencing significant public opposition to its five quarries in the Boston area. It was believed by the authors that this opposition could be significantly lessened if the total number of blasts per week were reduced. Although the blasting company at these quarries, Austin Powder Company, contended that this could easily and safely be accomplished by increasing the size of the blasts, regulations precluded this alternative by limiting the total amount of explosives that could be used per blast.

The leaching behavior of silver and silver oxides in ammonical solutions has been studied. The current study is concerned with an effective recovery of silver from secondary sources such as spent silver batteries. Silver associated with these batteries appears in various forms including metallic silver, argentous oxide, Ag2O and argentic oxide, AgO. The leaching behavior of metallic silver in ammoniacal solution has been studied using an electrochemical mehtod. Oxidants used in this study include hyperchlorite, hydrogen peroxide, bromine and iodine. Results on cyclic polarization and Tafel plots on the silver anode in ammoniacal solutions are presented and the results are discussed. The dissolution rate of metallic silver in ammoniacal solutions is also compared with those of silver oxides.

Top outlet sediments from the National Geochemical Survey of Australia have been extracted by a partial extraction method for over 50 elements including gold. The partial extraction results from this low-density survey show discrete coherent anomalies for Au in the vicinity of many of AustraliaÆs known goldfields, and in the vicinity of some minor gold occurrences. In several instances catchment outlet anomalies for Au have been recorded from areas not known to contain significant economic gold. Several large economic goldfields are shown to not produce anomalies in catchment outlet samples. A survey of overbank samples in the Swan Avon catchment of Western Australia at double the sampling density shows that low level anomalies (>1 ppb) can be traced back to source using overbank sediments. Follow-up of one of the Au anomalies at Kent River in previously regarded non-auriferous terrain (western Albany-Fraser Belt) indicates a non-economic, but perhaps geochemically significant, Au anomaly with associated pathfinders including palladium. This may indicate that further exploration of the western part of Albany Fraser Belt for Au is warranted. The combination of catchment overbank samples and partial analysis technique has been shown to be effective at locating the source of gold anomalies from initial low-density continental and regional surveys.CITATION:Mann, A, Davidson, A and de Caritat, P, 2013. The Non-Time Critical Forest service CERCLA Action at Mansfield Canyon, Santa Cruz County, Arizona designated previous locators of unpatented mining claims as owners/operators of the Hazardous Waste Facility, retroactively liable for all reclamation costs including reclamation of mines acquired by the Forest Service. The CERCLA Action is based on non-existent tailings, a non-existent permanent resident, inaccurate and unreliable data and did not review or consider prior USGS and USBM data. The consequences of the Forest Service action include(1) reduced exploration, (2) loss of credibility, (3)public disillusionment and distrust.

Real-world levels of attenuation from hearing protection devices are usually much lower than the rated values obtained under near-ideal circumstances. The shortfall is even more extreme for earplugs than it is for earmuffs, primarily because of the complicated process of fitting the plugs within the ear canal. This study examines the use of a commercially-available lubricant for hearing aids to determine whether it would facilitate improved fit and attenuation for earplugs. In this experiment, ten participants inserted earplugs with and without using the lubricant. Average attenuation was assessed with the Real-Ear-Attenuation-at-Threshold (REAT) technique, and showed over 5 dB improvement when the lubricant was used. Participants obtained an 85% mastery rate using the lubricant versus a 50% mastery rate without. These results indicate several possible applications for improved earplug performance in real-world settings where hazardous noise is unavoidable and effective hearing protection is necessary.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with three Minnesota agencies (Department of Natural Resources, Geological Survey, and the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board), investigated the potential of using glacial lake clay from Minnesota, as well as other areas, as a binder for iron ore pellets. The best clay-characterizing procedures for predicting binder effectiveness were the cation exchange capacity (CEC) using the methylene blue method and the plate water absorption test (PWAT). The best clay binder was found in the Red River Valley. However, compared to a typical western bentonite at the 0.5-pct-addition level, addition of about 2 pct Minnesota clay was required to obtain comparable unfired (green) pellet strengths. Soda ash addition only slightly improved the binding properties of Minnesota clay, but considerable improvement was obtained by the addition of a small quantity of water absorbing organic compounds. For example, with a mixture of 0.5 pct Minnesota clay or paint rock and 0.1 pct pregelatinized starch, the unfired and fired physical pellet properties were about the same as with 0.5 pct of typical western bentonite. The reduction rate at the 40-pct reduction level and the percentage of plus 6.3-mm particles from the reduction disintegration index test were also about the same.

The heat pipe is a self-contained, passive structure that uses a liquid-vapour fluid cycle to provide high thermal conductance . Through the proper selection of working fluids and container materials, heat pipes have been operated at temperatures ranging from less than -300°F to more than 3,000 °F. The passive nature, high efficiency and configuration flexibility of the heat pipe are presented. The application of McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Company Cryo-Anchor® heat pipes for foundation and support stabilization in permafrost regions is discussed. Using the proven Cryo-Anchor technology base. a proposed application of heat pipes in a cold -region mine ventilation system heat recovery heat exchanger is presented. Information obtained from the development of an air-cooled heat pipe steam condenser provides the technical basis for large -scale heat pipe applications.

Multiple Attribute Decision Making (MADM) method is applied to select tailings site of the Gol-e-Gohar Iron Ore Processing Plant in the Kerman province, south-eastern of Iran. To select tailings site, screening is applied on eight location proposed by Binnie and Granges. Consequently three sites identified for further studies. Evaluation factors include only the most important factors such as efficiency ratio, elevation and distance to processing facilities, occurrence of faults and fractures. Crisp values such as efficiency ratio, elevation and distance can be determined by measurements and calculations, but some factors such as occurrence of faults and fractures are presented as linguistic values that can be described with triangular fuzzy numbers. Based on evaluation values obtained an optimal tailings site can be selected using a modified Technique of ranking Preferences by Similarity to the Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) given crisp data and linguistic variables as the alternatives of attributes. Each attribute?s weight is assigned using the analytic hierarchy process. The final ranking order aids in the selection of tailings site. Finally, the stages of modified TOPSIS method were applied and site No.2 situated in 5400m to the mill was selected as the best alternative.

The Fosterville Goldmine in Victoria employs bacterial oxidation (BIOX« Process) to liberate gold from its flotation concentrate. Gold occurrence is primarily as submicron particles in pyrite and arsenopyrite and has been described as being in æsolid solutionÆ and therefore not amenable to direct cyanidation even with fine grinding. Once liberated by the oxidation process, the gold is then available for cyanide leaching. While the oxidation process is very effective, it has been found that a portion of the liberated gold can become suspended in the liquid phase in what appears to be a colloidal state. This liquid becomes a waste stream during washing of the oxidised solids and the suspended gold is therefore lost. This paper discusses investigations into the causes of the loss and also describes the successful use of quebracho tannin in reducing colloidal gold loss. Laboratory and subsequent plant trials, showed a gain of 2.6 per cent in overall gold recovery based on mill feed and waste stream data.

"Many alternative leaching systems including bacterial leaching have been introduced to avoid passivation on the surface of chalcopyrite and to increase the leaching efficiency of copper from chalcopyrite. Recently, glycine, one of the simplest amino acids, has been emerging as an efficient and environmental-friendly lixiviant to recover copper. In the present study, an alkaline glycine–peroxide lixiviant system was used to leach copper from chalcopyrite concentrate and the leaching mechanisms were also investigated by a suite of kinetic studies under different conditions. The chalcopyrite concentrate contains 28.8% copper with 30.8% sulfide sulfur. The effect of concentration of glycine and hydrogen peroxide of the leaching solution was investigated. Glycine concentration was varied from 0.5 to 1.0 M and the hydrogen peroxide concentration was changed between 3 to 5%. Leaching time and pulp density were also varied. Hydrogen peroxide is an oxidant of the system and the leaching efficiency with periodic additions of the peroxide was also studied. A mineralogical study was performed using XRD and SEM. To investigate the surface of the residue materials, XPS was used to see if any passivating layer was formed during the leaching. Detailed results from mineralogical, chemical, and metallurgical studies will be presented and discussed.INTRODUCTION The greatest global resource of copper is low-grade chalcopyrite and heap bioleaching may be the only economic option for its processing. However, formation of a passivating layer on the surface of chalcopyrite slows down the oxidation reaction and reduces the efficiency of the process."

"Sherritt Gordon's Ruttan Mine is a copper-zinc operation located approximately 600 miles north-west of Winnipeg. Open pit mining began in 1973 at 10,000 Tpd., with a change over to underground mining in 1981 producing 7,500 Tpd. Ore is crushed to -3/4"" followed by rod and ball mill grinding (two ball mills in series), differential copper-zinc flotation, and dewatering. The copper and zinc concentrates are trucked 75 miles to Lynn Lake, where they are shipped by rail to the HBM&S smelter at Flin Flon.This paper describes a method used to predict the effect of grind particle size on metallurgical performance, as well as details on the copper and zinc metallurgical performance due to fine grinding in actual plant operation.Initial statistical studies on historical data (including ore source, head gr3de, grind, etc.) indicated that copper and zinc recoveries increased with fineness of grind, in the range of 50 to 65% -200 mesh.In order to extrapolate beyond 65% -200 mesh, and to develop expected nonlinear relations between grind, Cu concentrate grade, and recovery, the assays of screen fractions of copper concentrate and tailing were used to determin8 the relation between net smelter return (a function of grade and recovery) and grinding cost. The optimum economic grind would be that grind at which the net smelter return less grinding cost reached a maximum."

The rock mass properties such as deformability and permeability are highly dependent on the existence of cracks. The Ratio of Crack Opening Dependency (RCOD) was proposed as a new index to evaluate the deformability of infinite jointed rock mass. The RCOD is defined as the ratio of total amount of crack opening and the total deformation of jointed rock mass. The theoretical relation between the RCOD and the effective compliance of jointed rock mass is discussed and confirmed through two-dimensional numerical analysis by the SC-DDM, together with the applicability to the rock engineering. Hydraulic coal mining is being successfully practiced in China, U.S.S.R., Japan and Canada and in each country, excepting Japan where suitable sites are not available, the system is being expanded to either existing conventional mines or new mines. Productivity levels and economics at these mines are in all cases better than the productivities achieved in conventional mines in the same general localities. In the U.S.S.R. face productivities approaching 50 tons per man shift have been reported while in Canada the latest statistics show average face area productivity levels are in the region of 200 tons per man shift production monitor. In the United States hydraulic mining has not been actively pursued to the same degree and consequently there are no full scale hydraulic coal mines in operation or construction. Because many of the coal measures in the Western U.S.A. are generally somewhat similar to those being successfully hydraulic mined in Western Canada and parts of Siberia it is realistic to believe that successful hydraulic mines can be designed and developed in the Western U.S.A. Particularly if the vast technological base that already exists is used to improve on other people's ideas, systems, methods and equipment.
