Private equity (PE) firms are comparatively free of mandatory requirements for the level and scope of due diligence applied prior to making investment decisions in minerals projects when compared to listed entities, sovereign funds or financial institutions adopting the Equator Principles (Equator Principles Association, 2013). While this freedom allows for flexibility, agility and innovation in making investment decisions, it can also expose PE firms to material risks that may impact their ability to successfully list the projects or attract later financing.Financial institutions and investors with mandatory due diligence and disclosure standards may refrain from investment in or acquisition of a project if it fails to meet various performance requirements. There are many high-profile projects that have suffered significant write-downs on book value after acquisition because specific non-mining issues were not adequately assessed. Thus, a PE firm may be left with an asset that is difficult to divest and incapable of securing development finance.PE firms can manage this risk by being aware of the growth trend in the adoption of ‘international standards’ in addition to host nation standards and legislative requirements. This paper outlines key issues for PE firms to address to maximise the chances of obtaining funding or successfully taking an exploration or mining project through to listing or divestment. Two steps are required: identification of gaps in performance and priority matters of interest to financial institutions and development of action plans to ensure that the priority requirements are met or capable of being met.A PE firm can set its project for success by understanding the social and environmental performance requirements of international standard financiers and by setting the project on the right path to meeting these requirements, and thus making it an attractive investment.CITATION:Allen, P, Stoker, P and Keogh, A, 2015. Dr. Roussey Roussev The use of chemical additives on grinding is of significant importance considering the high energy consumption of grinding processes. My research indicates that the dispersant approach explains the effects, in this particular case of wet grinding. Further, the dispersant approach combined with torque measurements give the possibility of clarifying the mechanisms involved when using grinding aids. I find the conclusions derived from the data obtained to be correct and useful for grinding. In general, I agree with the explanations. However, I would like to discuss several additional points that I consider to be important, and in the same time to mention some of my own results from investigations similar to those presented in the study under discussion. The "bed volume concept" and the change of slurry viscosity explain adequately the data plotted on fig. 3, in conjunction with Figs. 1 and 2. However, the significant increase of the average torque in the case of 83% solid with XFS-4272 introduces the necessity of establishing the optimum of percent solid when dispersant is used. For example, the optimum percent of solid for different materials varies. One of the reasons is the material's mass density. On the other hand, it is necessary to determine the concentration of the chemical used. Because of this, it would be interesting to know how the cited concentration was selected. The supportive discussion and verification by Dr. Roussev, with results similar to that of the paper, is appreciated. I will try to answer the additional questions he has raised. To begin with, the mill was fitted with six lifters of approximately one-quarter inch height. There has been extensive lab and plant level work to understand downstream influences of using dispersants like XFS-4272*. In sulfide ore processing, which is the area in which most industrial scale testing has been performed with this approach, neutral to positive influences have been observed. For example, positive effects (e.g., increased recovery) have been noticed in flotation operations involving ores that have a tendency to produce excessive slimes upon grinding. (1) Also, the use of a dispersant has been shown to demonstrate a positive influence on classification by improving the sharpness of separation and preventing a decrease in d50 value that usually accompanies increasing flow rates to classifiers.(2) The biggest potential downstream problem is in thickening, which at the dosages involved, has not been a problem in plant scale usage. The commercial price of dispersants like XFS-4272 is quite variable depending on source, concentration, etc, but a typical cost of XFS-4272 to achieve a 10% increase in throughput in industrial mills has been between 20 and 35- US per ton of feed ore (1981).

In mid 1993, Bauer Spezialtiefbau GmbH, based in Germany got the order to develop a sampling tool capable of penetrating all different types of seabed sediments including cobbles and boulders and into bedrock. BHP and their partners Benguela Concessions Ltd., had been convinced by the Bauer Trench Cutter Technology and a large scale test in Germany that this system will be the right one to fulfill their expectations for sampling the diamond area off the coast of Namibia. The technique of the tool is based on Bauer's standard cutter technology, which is widely used for the installation of cut-off and diaphragm walls all around the world. The two counterrotating cutter wheels with 12.1 tom torque each cut an area of 3 x 1.2 m (up to 3 x 3 m are possible). The material mixed with seawater was then pumped to the separation plant on board the vessel Geomaster with a capacity of approximately 700 m3/h. Cutter wheels and mud pump were mounted on a special cutter frame and connected by wire ropes and hydraulic hoses to the vessel. An outer frame with four telescopic legs supported the cutter vertically on the uneven seabed and allowed a controlled penetration of the tool up to 6 m into the diamond bearing ground. The tool required a total power installed of approximately 800 kW. All hoses, the 6-inch mud hoses as well as the hydraulic hoses, were stored and compensated on drums on board suitable for a water depth of up to 200 m. Launch and recovery of the tool was effected through the moon pool of the vessel and the 25 m high, special designed drill tower. The 65? to sampling tool had been commissioned in early 1994 in Cape Town. After intensive testing the sampling programme of more than 4000 holes could be successfully completed by January 1995.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of flake and high-crystalline natural graphite from 4 domestic and 25 foreign mines and deposits in 11 market economy countries (MEC's). Demonstrated resources were estimated to be 95 million metric tons (Mmt) containing 5.61 Mmt of recoverable flake and high-crystalline graphite products. Fifty-five percent (3.17 Mmt) of the total recovered product is estimated to comprise plus 100-mesh (150-µm) flake pro-ducts and "lump" and "chip" high-crystalline products, designated as "graphite A" in this study; 45 pct (2.44 Mmt) of the total is minus 100-mesh (150-µm) flake products and "dust" high-crystalline products, designated as "graphite B." Total production costs, including all costs needed over the life of each operation, were determined at a 0-and 15-pct discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR) for both graphite A and graphite B products. For a 15-pct DCFROR, 1.74 Mmt (54.9 pct) of the graphite A products is available at $600/mt or less and 2.13 Mmt (67.2 pct) is available for $800/mt or less. For the same DCFROR, 1.08 Mmt (44.3 pct) of the graphite B is available at $200/mt or less, and 1.71 Mmt (70 pct) is available at $325/mt or less. No domestic resources were determined to be economic at present prices. A sensitivity analysis of the relative economics of the Alabama graphite deposits under various operational parameters is presented in an appendix. All evaluations are in January 1984 dollars.

Tailings dam failures have been occurring in recent years. They are considered more vulnerable than hydraulic dams due to the lack of regulations on specific design criteria, and stability requirements regarding monitoring during the construction and maintenance process. Thus, monitoring the dam is essential to know the dam's existing state and ensure its safety. One of the reasons tailings storage facilities fail is slope instability caused by moisture content. A relationship does exist between moisture content and surface strength, early detection of seepage would help to assess the physical condition of the dam. Moreover, to cover the tailings dam area in an efficient way Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are suitable because of their versatility and high-resolution data acquisition. Mounted with a high-resolution RGB camera, and thermal, or hyperspectral sensors UAVs can acquire good quality images that combined with image analysis and machine learning algorithms yield a good estimate of soil moisture.

In a modern economy there is a compelling case why governments should not own property rights to mineral deposits. Assuming they do, however, governments will use these constitutional rights to raise revenue. They have two basic instruments to achieve this; a royalty charge on price or a rent tax on income/profits. On the one hand, a royalty charge creates a 'deadweight loss' to society by increasing cut-off grades and decreasing the life-of-mine. They are also regressive. However, they are easy to administer. On the other hand, a rent tax avoids the problem of 'deadweight loss'; it does not impact on the life-of-mine because the tax structure is neutral. But, they are difficult to administer correctly, particularly in the determination of rents and the definition of mining per se. If rents are incorrectly determined capital markets are distorted. And, if mining activities are incorrectly defined, downstream activities could be adversely affected.

The objective of this research was to investigate the interaction phenomena of rock and types of rock bolts to develop design principals for using grouted roof bolts. The investigation was to determine the effectiveness of grouted bolts in resisting lateral displacement and axial separation along fracture planes, and also to determine if grouted bolts eliminate the axial tensile stress near the anchor and the resulting rock fracture. The first year's effort involved defining the post-tensioning response of grouted bars and determining the amount of shear resistance generated by conventional and resin-grouted bolts. A finite-element analysis showed that if the rock and resin grout behave in an elastic manner, the post tensioning of a grouted bar will affect mine roof stability only if movement occurs near the collar. An experimental shear test program revealed that both conventional bolts and resin-grouted reinforcing bars significantly increase shear resistance along fracture or bedding plane when the average normal compressive stress on that plane is low (in the order of 25 psi) and when the bolt is oriented so that the shear displacement tends to lengthen the bolt. An increase in shear resistance is also noted at the higher normal pressure of 250 psi; however, the increase is small compared to the corresponding shear resistance without a bolt. Conventional bolts oriented so that they tended to loosen with shear displacement added no significant shear resistance.

Para ello, se tomó el modelo de planeamiento estratégico desarrollado por Fred David y se realiza el análisis y diagnóstico interno de la empresa, a partir de los antecedentes, situación actual de la empresa, evaluación de la misión, objetivos actuales y cadena de valor de la empresa, luego se clasifica a la industria minera y se integra los resultados obtenidos, la matriz de evaluación del factor externo (EFE) y la matriz de evaluación del factor interno (EFI); para así elaborar la matriz (FODA) a partir de la cual se formula as estrategias por seguir. Finalmente, se redefine la misión de futura de SMEB y se ejecuta las estrategias y las acciones en las áreas funcionales.

Chromite deposits along the Border Ranges Fault in southern Alaska were investigated by the Bureau of Mines. This report, part 1 of a two- part series, describes the deposits. Part 2 describes the mineralogy and the results of metallurgical tests. Fieldwork began in 1981 and continued through 1983. Ninety-four subeconomic podifom chromite deposits in eight mafic-ultramafic complexes were investigated. Previously unreported chromite deposits at Red Mountain on Kenai Peninsula, on Kodiak Island, and near Tonsina are described. Deposits range in size from less than a thousand tons to over 1.25 million tons of contained chromic oxide (Cr203). Grades range from about 5 to 10 pct chromite. Excluding all deposits more than 10 miles from tidewater or existing roads and all deposits containing only chemical- or refractory-grade chromite, about 2,200,000 tons of Cr203 are contained in 41 hard-rock deposits. A placer deposit contains an additional 556,000 tons. These 42 deposits constitute a subeconomic indicated and inferred reserve sufficient to meet the Nation's chromite demands for about 4 yr, or the metallurgical industry's demands for over 5 yr, at 1981 consumption rates.

Despite a present, short-term economic recession, a remarkable enthusiasm exists in Hong Kong for building infrastructure including major tunnel projects. This paper provides details of current and recent bored tunnel works together with an insight into the impressive list of future underground projects planned by the MTRC,KCRC, Highways Department and Drainage Services Department for the next decade. Risks for each of these works including pipejacking, mixed face and rock tunnelling generally in Hong Kong are also identified. From this is evident that the scale and difficulty of such works continues to increase, requiring the use of more sophisticated methods of construction, the need for better methods of assessing and managing risks and for Government to utilize improved, more equitable Conditions of Contract for such major tunnelling projects.

In 2018, the German Federal government decided to phase-out the energy production using coal-fired power plants and to terminate lignite mining completely by 2038 at the latest. This decision will impact approximately 60,000 jobs. It will have an enormous impact on the socioeconomic development especially in all German lignite mining regions. To avoid economic and political friction, it is of utmost importance to achieve a sustainable transition towards a post-mining era and to offer residents in the mining districts perspectives for a good future that include adequate job opportunities. In this context, the German government is providing massive structural aids early on. As previous closure experiences from the German hard coal mining industry have shown, it takes at least a generation to overcome the effects of a strategic closing decision of this magnitude. Therefore, the planned closure process appears to be a long time at first glance. In fact, however, it is not.

The zinc pressure leach process developed by Sherritt Gordon, Ltd. permits the direct leaching of sulphide concentrates according to the overall reaction, ZnS +H,zS04 +402.+ZnS04+H20 +S0 The kinetics of the leach are affected by three rate controlling steps; ( l) oxygen mass transfer from the gas to the leach solution, (2) homogeneous oxidation of ferric ion to ferric ion by dissolved 011.ygen and (3) ferric ion leaching of zinc sulphide in the presence of a sulphur dispersing detergent (lignin sulphonic acid). Fundamental studies have been conducted to identify the factors that influence the kinetics of each individual rate controlling step. Oxygen mass transfer studies have been directed toward optimization of the agitator configuration for solids mixing and gas pumping from the atmosphere above the leach slurry. The rate of ferrous oxidation by molecular oxygen and the rate of zinc sulphide leaching by ferric ion have been studied over a wide range of temperature and solution compositions. The study of zinc sulphide leaching by ferric ion was supplemented by a series of interfacial tension measurements in the liquid sulphur - zinc sulphate solution system. The various kinetic studies have been summarized in terms of the importance of each rate to the performance of the process.

Sin embargo, a partir del año 2000 se desarrolló problemas con este proceso, ya que la solución cianurada de regado no percolaba igual que en el mineral inicial. En este sentido, el presente trabajo describe el proceso del englomerado como el método más apropiado en la lixiviación del mineral. Para ello, es necesario determinar las variables y rangos que influyen en la extracción del oro, incrementar el porcentaje de extracción en las pilas de lixiviación y determinar un modelo matemático en función de las variables estudiadas que describa el fenómeno, de forma que se obtenga una mayor recuperación del oro, manteniéndose los valores de el nitrato de potasio, humedad del minera y el ratio del riego dentro de un rango óptimo, sin un mayor costo de operación

Soda ash is the trade name for sodium carbonate, a chemical refined from the mineral trona or naturally occurring sodium carbonate-bearing brines (both referred to as natural soda ash) or manufactured from one of several chemical processes (referred to as synthetic soda ash). It is an essential raw material in glass, chemicals, detergents and other important industrial products. Production U.S. soda ash production during 2004 increased to10.9 million Mt (12 million st). Five companies comprised the domestic soda ash industry. Four were in Wyoming operating five plants. One was in California with one plant.

Ground engaging tools are used to prevent damage to the main components of earth-moving equipment. These tools consist of everything from shovel teeth to replaceable drill bits to dozer wear plates. The costs of these ?consumable? items are increasing with the costs of raw materials. This project developed a tool to be used by Newmont Mining Corporation to predict the consumption of excavator teeth. This paper presents the results of a Montana Tech research project in which an equation was developed to predict excavator teeth consumption based on production rates and rock properties.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) carried out exploratory laboratoryscale studies to identify factors that may contribute to nitrogen oxides (NOx) production associated with non-ideal detonation of blasting agents. Explosive admixture with drill cuttings, loss of fuel oil in ammonium nitrate and fuel oil (ANFO) from wicking, ammonium nitrate dissolution with water, degree of explosive confinement, ANFO density, and critical diameter were identified as contributing factors to increased NOx production under the laboratory test conditions. Experiments were also conducted to examine the effectiveness of various additives in reducing the NOx production from ANFO, emulsion, and ANFO/emulsion blends. Aluminum powder, coal dust, urea, and excess fuel oil in ANFO formulations were tested and were found to reduce both the nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) production. Fumes measurements were obtained in the NIOSH underground closed chamber from the detonation of 4.5-kg (10 lbs) charges in schedule 80 seamless steel pipe and from detonations in light weight galvanized steel stove pipe. Some exploratory tests were also conducted with 0.8-kg (1.8 lbs) charges of pulverized ANFO initiated with 0.08-kg (0.18 lbs), 50/50 (Pentolite) boosters (in the NIOSH 12-ft (3.7-m) diameter steel sphere) to measure the degree of fumes production associated with post-detonation oxidation. Ammonium nitrate, emulsion and Pentolite boosters were also detonated in an oxygen-poor environment.

The selection of atmosphere composition is critical for controlling surface quality of reactive aluminum alloys during solution treatments. An improper selection of annealing atmosphere can result in surface blistering in AI-Mg and sub-surface depletion of lithium in AI-U ingots. To determine optimum atmosphere compositions for homogenizing A1-Mg and Al-Li alloys, Ii number of exploratory experiments were carried out in air, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide based atmospheres including reactive impurities or additive such as moisture and sulfur hexafluoride. This paper describes the influence of these atmospheres on high-temperature oxidation and sub-surface defects. The results are discussed in terms of the change in Pilling-Bedworth ratio.
