Major falls of ground, strainbursts, airblast and mudrush events are the major hazards in block caving environments, resulting in both safety and financial consequences and losses. Rio Tinto mines have developed strategies to reduce the likelihood of these events occurring. However, until recently, there have been no tools available to monitor and manage these hazards in real time.Mira Geoscience and Rio Tinto have collaborated to develop real-time geohazmaps to monitor and manage major cave hazards. These geohazmaps are used by mine planners to integrate multiple hazard parameters that contribute to form a combined hazard rating.The benefits of implementing geohazmaps include safety and cost improvements through the early identification of potential locations for major events. These cost savings are realised in the design phase, where development and critical infrastructure is located in areas of lower hazard rating. Four companies mined ball clay in four States during2004. They were H.C. Spinks Clay (owned by Franklin Minerals) Kentucky-Tennessee Clay (owned by Imerys),Old Hickory Clay and Unimin. Production was estimated to be 1.46 Mt (1.61 million st) valued at about $56.9 million, based on a preliminary survey of the ball clay industry. In 2003, production was 1.31 Mt (1.44 million st) valued at $56.2 million. Tennessee was the leading producer state with 61 percent of production. It was followed by Texas, Kentucky and Mississippi.

Filtration of hematite ore slurries can be a bottleneck in some hematite processing plants due to inadequate filtration rates caused by the dispersion of fine particles. Flocculation of fine particles in the slurry decreases the specific cake resistance of the filter cake allowing for increased filtration rates. CO2 sparging of hematite slurry was shown to increase the filtration rate by altering the pH and the surface chemistry of the particles. It was shown that an increase in filtration rate of 278% can be accomplished by lowering the pH from 11 to 6.5 using CO2. This was attributed to increased flocculation of hematite and silica particles in the ore.

"The Normetal mine is about 7 miles east of the Ontario-Quebec boundary, and 13 miles north of the town of Dupuy on the Canadian National railway. The mine workings are largely on lots 44 and 45 in the south half of range 10, Desmeloizes township.The surface outcrop is reported to have been discovered by a trapper previous to 1925, but the details are obscure. The property was originally owned by the Canadian Exploration Company of Amos, Quebec, and was later transferred to Abana Mines, Limited. The latter Company carried out underground work from two shafts down to the 550-foot level. The property was acquired by Normetal Mining Corporation in 1931 and was reopened in 1933, when development work was carried down to the 800-foot level. The mine was closed down in 1935 because metal prices did not justify production at that time. It was reopened early in 1937 and milling commenced in September of that year. To the end of 1945, a total of 1,497,- 169 tons of ore was milled from which was produced 184,533 tons of copper concentrates containing 84,738,368 lb. copper, 2,744,100 oz. silver, 26,230 oz. gold, and 153,524 tons of zinc concentrates containing 163,752,433 lb . zinc."

"Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy has been employed to· examine the role of tetraperoxochromate( V) ions (Cro:-) and other Cr(V) species in the generation of hydroxyl (OH) radicals in the reaction of Cr(VI) with H2O 2 in biological media. In contrast to earlier suggestions, the present ESR studies using crystalline K3CrO8 as a source of Cro:- show that decomposition of Cro:- in water or in H2O 2 does not generate significant amounts of OH radicals. Addition of NADH to a solution containing Cro:- yields a Cr(V)-NADH complex, which readily reacts with H2O 2 to generate OH radicals. Similar results obtained from several other biological reductants, including vitamin B2 , indicate that a vacant coordination site on a Cr(V) complex facilitates its reaction with H2O 2 to generate ""OH radicals. We thus suggest that in biological media, reaction [3] instead of [1] or [2] is the major pathway for the OH radical generation: While the carcinogenic potential of Cr(Vl)-based compounds has been well established via epidemiologic and animal studies (1), the underlying biochemical mechanism is still not well understood (2). In a recent development, however, Kawanishi et al. (3) have reported that hydroxyl (OH)2 radicals might be the key species in the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity. As to the mechanism of the ""OH radical formation they suggest that Cr(VI) reacts with cellular hydrogen peroxide (H2O 2) to form the tetraperoxochromate(V) (Crog-) ions, which decompose to produce hydroxyl radicals. It was also suggested (3) that the ""OH radicals thus produced cause genotoxicity via DNA base modification and deoxyribose phosphate backbone alterations. More recently Aiyar et al. (4) reported the detection of OH radicals in the reaction of Cr(VI) with H2O 2 in biological media, including the reaction of ""OH radicals with deoxyguanosine to generate 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine adducts, confirming that ""OH radicals could indeed play a significant role in the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity. However, the mechanism for the ""OH generation was not clarified, although the role of Crog- ions as possible precursors was mentioned, somewhat along the lines suggested by Kawanishi et al. (3). The possibility of the participation of Crog- in the ""OH generation has also been indicated by Sugiyama et al. (5), since they mention that vitamin B2 enhances the formation of""OH radicals in the reaction of Cr(VI) with H2O 2 because of the generation of Crog- in the reaction."

A.B. Rushton The work and resulting publications of the Committee on Underground Coal Mine Safety and The President's Commission on Coal were appropriate at the time of publication. The statistics cited in the publications appeared to be valid, and the actions proposed by the committee had merit. Although the actions proposed to achieve further improvements in safety may have been worthy of repeating, to associate statistics (Table 1) that are seven to eight years old with company names is bad. Statistics are readily available from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and are usually within three months of being up to date. A review of the most recent Coal Controlling Co. Report will reveal significant changes in the rankings. The more recent statistics should have been cited, or at least compared with those used in the article. Westmoreland Coal Co. is listed as having a 21.1 disabling injury rate for the period (1/78-12/80). The disabling injury rate for the Company for the year ending 1985 was 7.4 for the underground mines and 6.25 for the total facilities. Through March 1986, the disabling rate for the underground mines was 2.86. The management and employees of Westmoreland Coal Co. are committed to safety. The improvements achieved over the past five years attest to that commitment. We are justifiably proud of the achievement and dislike being misrepresented as in the April 1986 article. Reply by E.M. Spokes I regret that the lapse of time since the original work gives a picture of safety practice that is no longer true today. That Westmoreland has reduced its disabling injury rate by 65% to 7.4 in 1985 is most commendable, and I congratulate you for this accomplishment. It is typical of the progress sought by the National Academy of Science and National Research Council when they funded the original study and published "Toward Safer Underground Coal Mines" in 1982. If a significant number of companies do as well as Westmoreland, the report will have served its purpose. Since the paper was primarily a condensation of the original report, it would not have been appropriate to seek access to later statistics. The purpose in seeking its publication at the time of presentation was to reach those who might have missed the original report. The fact that publication was delayed has not voided that purpose and may have reminded some who were aware of the original that its recommendations still apply to improvement of underground coal mine safety.

Nickel and cobalt production relies heavily on the processing of nickel laterite ores; these ores contain the majority of known Ni and Co reserves, 80% and 90% ~ 95%, respectively. The Caron process is used to extract Ni and Co metals from low-grade nickel laterite ores (1% Ni and 0.1% Co). It involves selective reduction of NiO and CoO minerals followed by ammoniacal leaching. Despite low metal recoveries, this process continues to be technically and economically reliable and thus commercially important globally. However, keeping the Caron process cost-effective has been a challenge for industries because of increasing economic and environmental pressures. Although studies of the Caron process have been extensive, significant improvements in recoveries of industrial processes have not been forthcoming. Reported industrial metal recovery from high iron content ore is only 80% ~ 85% for Ni and only 40% ~ 45% for Co; recovery is even lower for ores rich in magnesium. The real difficulty here is that there is no complete understanding of and control over the complex series of reactions in the ore and in the leaching solution during processing. Achieving effective metal recoveries from the Caron will require control of the mineral transformations, which affect the activation of minerals by reduction. In this study, the effect of over-reduction was investigated, which superseded the effect of activation by lowering the activity of the minerals and thus metal dissolution. Reduction was carried out in a batch reduction apparatus with 1:1 and 1:2.5 CO/CO2 gas mixtures from temperatures of 500 ~ 700°C and residence times up to 60 minutes. The pre-reduced ores were leached using a standard ammoniacal leaching test. Thermodynamic analysis and possible effects of stable phase field on leaching was examined. The results suggest that control of over reduction effects are directly related to the mineral transformation and reduction conditions.

(Eng.)(Rand) INTRODUCTION Stone Age people were living in various parts of South Africa as recent,ly as a thousand years ago, when they were displaced by Iron Age people with a culture developed in the far north. These invaders brought farming, building, and the earliest mining developments to the Transvaal, thus ushering in the beginning of our great mineral heritage. It is of particular interest to record that, up to comparatively recent times, some of these people were excavating iron-bearing shale rocks for their smelting furnaces on the Melville Koppies in J ohannesburg. Although the most recent the iron-smelting furnaces discovered on these koppies is estimated to be some five-hundred years old, it believed that these Iron Age people were driven out, and their settlements destroyed, by Zulu impis only one-hundred-and-fifty years ago.

A carbon free precast block was prepared by using high-alumina fused corundum as aggregate and fused magnesia, and ultra-fine Al2O3 and ultra-fine SiO2 powders as matrix materials. A small linear expansion for the precast block was achieved through spinel formation from the reaction of MgO with Al2O3. The precast block showed a lower apparent porosity, higher hot modulus of rupture and better slag corrosion resistance compared to the traditional Al2O3-MgO-C brick. Moreover, the practical application of the precast block to the ladle lining proved it to possess a better thermal insulation which could effectively prevent the temperature drop of molten steel during the refining process. It can be predicted that the carbon free precast block could possibly be accepted as a new type of ladle lining material for the production of low-carbon and ultra-low-carbon steel.

"This paper investigates the effect of driving a group of 52 open-ended Prestressed High Strength Concrete (PHC) piles on an existing highway embankment based on field measurements of excess pore pressure and lateral soil displacement. Excess pore pressure due to pile driving increased with depth and decreased with increasing distance from the pile, influencing a distance of 43 pile diameters. For pile groups, the rate of dissipation of excess pore pressure decreased with increasing depth and averaged 79% in 20 days, during which maximum ultimate bearing capacity was not yet attained. Lateral soil displacement continued to increase for a period of time after the end of pile driving and this could have resulted in significant inclination of piles if pile installation was too quick and pile spacing was too small. Lateral soil displacement due to pile group decreased with decreasing distance to the existing embankment as a result of high soil density produced by the embankment loading. The results also indicate that the effect of pile group installation on the existing embankment is negligible.INTRODUCTIONPile driving can cause excessive lateral displacement of soil and heaving of the ground surface, which may adversely affect nearby structures. In addition, lateral deformation and excess pore water pressure resulting from pile driving can exert lateral pressures and vertical forces on the piles, and impact negatively on the project and its surroundings. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the influence of pile driving on the nearby structures as well as the project itself when expansion works are carried out.Recent years have seen some development in the application of field tests for studying soil disturbance due to piles, and these tests usually involves pore water pressure and lateral soil displacement monitoring during pile driving. Results of field experiments performed by Reese and Seed (1957) in San Francisco Bay Mud with instrumented piles showed that pile installation generated large pore water pressures at the pile surface, with only slight increase at a distance of 15 pile diameters away. The measurements indicated that the increase in pore water pressures can exceed the initial total overburden pressure. Holtz and Lowitz (1965) reported a decrease in undrained shear strength immediately after pile installation, which was largely recovered after full pore pressure dissipation for field measurements within 1.5–2 pile diameters from the pile surface. Hwang et al. (2001) presented results of large scale pile driving tests where maximum excess pore water pressure generated decreased rapidly with increasing distance from pile. The excess pore water pressure became negligible at 15 pile diameters from the pile. Their results also showed that lateral displacement of the ground decreased with increasing distance from the pile. Pestana et al. (2002) carried out full-scale closed ended pile tests in the Young Bay Mud deposit. Higher excess pore pressures were observed for points closer to the pile, which decreased with increasing distance from the pile wall. Exponential decay of excess pore pressure with time was also noted. An 80% dissipation of excess pore pressure was achieved for soils more than one pile diameter away from the pile wall between 50 to 80 days. Lateral deformation generally decreased with increasing distance from pile wall, whilst varying erratically with depth. Bozozuk et al. (1978) reported on soil disturbance due to driving of 116 concrete piles in sensitive marine clays in a construction project. Maximum pore water pressures after pile driving within the group, and 6m (20 pile diameters) from the group were over 35-40% of the total overburden pressures, and the influence of pile driving on pore water pressure at 20m away from the group was very small. Underground miners may be exposed to hazardous quantities of toxic gases, such as carbon monoxide (CO), generated from mine fires or explosions. Every underground miner is required to carry a filter self-rescuer (FSR), which when operated will remove CO from the miner's breathing air. In addition, every underground miner must have a self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) near the worksite that will supply breathing oxygen. In many situations, miners do not know when to don either rescuer since they do not know if there is a fire in the mine, nor do they carry instrumentation necessary for the detection of the toxic, colorless, and odorless fire product CO. If each miner carried a personal CO alarm, which would respond to high concentrations of CO, the miner would then be alerted when to don either the FSR or SCSR and exit the mine. A prototype personal miner's CO alarm called PEMCOAL was developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The PEMCOAL unit is small enough to be carried on a miner's belt, has a flash lamp visual alarm, requires no calibration for use, and uses a chemical sensor that changes color by reaction with trace quantities of CO. The chemical sensor was tested at concentrations of CO from 10 to 1,000 ppm, at temperatures from 5° to 40° C, and with several potential mine gas interferents. The PEMCOAL alarm times were sufficiently fast to warn miners before they are exposed to hazardous quantities of CO.

The Mogalakwena North Concentrator of Anglo Platinum Operations was built with the capability to allow for future projected expansion. Several research groups, currently working with Anglo American on collaborative research over a range of projects, were brought in to review the existing operation, with a view to releasing some specific bottlenecks and providing specialist design input to the potential plant expansion.Based on a thorough review of the high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) and crushing circuit, a wide range of de-bottlenecking opportunities were identified. This was followed by a series of surveys to provide performance measurements and to model the circuit in detail. From this effort a full simulation of the plant has been developed, including updated models of the HPGR, crusher, bins and screens. These models have been implemented in the researchersÆ Model Development Kit (MDK) version of JKSimMet, and in a prototype dynamic simulator based on the Matlab Simulink software.The observations, measurements and simulations have provided guidance and quantified the benefits of some proposed circuit modifications. Based on these findings a number of upgrades are being planned, with the aim of ensuring full utilisation of the installed equipment. Finite-element,, mathematical models that solve LaPlace's and Richard's equations numerically were used to locate the phreatic surface within tailings pond embankments and to define the subsurface flow of water from the pond. Both must be known to design structurally and environmentally safe tailings dams. The permeability distribution within and beneath the embankment, the fluid potential values upgradient and downgradient from the embankment, and the geometry and elevation of an approximately impermeable layer at some depth beneath the embankment were used as computer inputs in analyzing over a dozen finite-element models of tailings dams varying structurally from simple to complex. Results predicted with the finite-element model were confirmed with measurements in a laboratory model of a tailings pond and in the field. Of particular importance to the design of safe slopes, all data indicated that the phreatic surface within a tailings dam is concave upward, a configuration opposite that in most earth dams. The close correlation between predicted and experimental values confirmed the practicability of using the finite-element technique to design safe tailings dams.

This paper summarises the lessons learned during a recent carbon reactivation kiln upgrade project at the Sukari Gold Mine in Egypt. The kiln is being replaced to ensure that the plant achieves full value from the current throughput expansion from 5 to 10 Mt/a.The suitability of the original engineering design criteria for kiln selection and the adequacy of the original kiln are reviewed in the light of the carbon chemistry, operating experience and a site inspection of the kiln. Particular aspects of the reactivation facility are discussed including: predrying, preheating, feeding, gas seals, kiln heat transfer, steam injection, counter-current sweep gas flow, carbon cooling, fines minimisation and removal.Design criteria for a carbon predryer, reactivation kiln and cooler combination for carbon heavily fouled by high molecular weight frothers and collectors are discussed and the abridged Ausenco datasheet for the combination is presented.Responses to a request for a budget price sent to most of the worldÆs suppliers of carbon regeneration kilns are summarised.CITATION:Claflin, J K, La Brooy, S R J and Preedy, D, 2013. This paper will review the procedure of selecting optimum wire rope constructions for these existing hoisting installations. Selection for proposed installations along with recommended hoisting parameters will also be presented. To achieve this optimum rope performance, preventative and corrective maintenance procedures will be reviewed along with examples of rope problems and their causes.

"This paper describes the history of LDV measurements employed in research involving gas-solid flows. Much of the discussion deals with measurement techniques employed to obtain separate and simultaneous solid and gas phase velocities. Also, LDV based measurement techniques that arc used to obtain particle size and concentration information in conjunction with the velocity measurements arc presented.INTRODUCTIONThere are numerous examples of industrial processes in which the motion of a solid or droplet dispersed phase in a suspending gas phase is critically important. The applications range from spray droplets injected into combustion chambers to the understanding of the time release mechanisms of particles generated by dissolving pharmaceutical tablets. In many of these processes, the heat, mass, and/or momentum transfer between the dispersed phase and the suspending fluid arc the items of interest. In the past, much of the phenomena were characterized by empirical models derived from flow averaged measurements. Gradual developments in laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV), have provided researchers with an unobtrusive measurement technique capable of obtaining the particle size velocity and concentration with good spatial resolution.In the two decades that LDV instrumentation has been available, most of the uses have concentrated on single phase fluid flow measurements. The light scattered from seed particles small enough to follow complex fluid motions, including turbulence, is converted into velocity information. While the utility of this instrument in single phase flows has been demonstrated beyond question, the use of LDV in gas-solid multiphase flows has had a more gradual development. The measurements ·of interest in these flow regimes are usually the velocity of the suspending fluid as well as that of the dispersed particulate phase. Early investigators were quick to see the potential of this instrument for measurements in gas-solid flows. The interest soon expanded to the development of instruments that could also simultaneously measure particle size and concentration within a two-phase flow field.This paper tracks the historical development of LDV technology as applied to gas-solid flows. The techniques to measure particle velocity, size, and concentration arc treated in separate sections although much of the development occurred simultaneously. Finally, some unique applications conducted at West Virginia University and other locations will be discussed in the application section."

Computational chemistry methods, such as density functional theory (DFT), are powerful tools to quantify reagent-mineral interactions encountered in sulphide mineral flotation. A quantitative relationship between theoretically calculated parameters based on chemical structure of collectors and their reactivity with different metals/minerals can provide valuable insights for design and development of more powerful and tailor-made reagents offering enhanced metal/mineral selectivity. DFT calculations at B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level were employed to elucidate the reactivity of neutral sulphide collector reagents, including thionocarbamates (TC), thioureas (TU), xanthogen-formates (XF), dialkyldithiocarbamates (DTC) and dialkyltrithiocarbonates (TTC) with different heavy metal ions (Cu2+, Zn2+ and Pb2+) in solution. The extent of delocalization of lone pair electrons of heteroatoms (attached directly to C in C=S) over C=S group was found to be the dominant factor in determining the collector’s reactivity. Order of reactivity was established as: TU > TC > XF > DTC > TTC. All the collectors showed superior affinity towards copper followed by lead. Unidentate binding was observed through sulphur atom except for xanthogen-formate for which bidentate binding mode was observed. Effect of nature of substituent groups at N and/or O atom on reactivity of thionocarbamate and thiourea was also investigated. The results obtained through DFT calculations are consistent with the experimental data reported in literature.

"The website www.economicevaluation.com.au, which had its origins at the Project Evaluation Conference 2009, provides a free way for industry professionals to teach themselves economic evaluation. At its core is a set of fast-moving modules and three worked examples.The website recognises that economic evaluation is a discipline with a hierarchy of three levels:decision-makingevaluating the project/businesshands-on modelling.There are a set of modules for each level that describe the concepts and activities in detail. These emphasise that the most important and rewarding work is the evaluation of Level 2. The economic model created in Level 3 is merely a working tool and should not become a sophisticated ‘trophy’ in Excel that only one or two people can comfortably use.Hands-on modelling contains three sets of practices designed to make any model rigorous and intuitive so that it can be easily understood and used by others in the project team. Even if the model develops into a long, detailed and complex workbook, it should remain easy to follow and be intuitive.
