Solid state galvanic cell with CaF2 as the electrolyte was employed for determining the thermodynamic properties of Nb-Al binary alloys in the temperature range of 973-1073 K. The activities and activity coefficients of Al in NbAl3 were determined. The experimental procedure and the design and construction of the experimental setup have been also explained in detail. Aluminum activity in NbAl3 increased with increase in temperature and shows a strong negative deviation from ideality. The activities of aluminum in NbAl3 were determined to be 0.0165 and 0.0289 at 973 and 1073 K respectively. The stability of NbAl3 has been compared with other available intermetallic systems.

Productivity and operating expenses are everything when it comes to judging how well your mine and company are doing. Stakeholders are always looking at these numbers and trying to understand if productivity is improving, if operating costs are trending downward and what you are basing your decisions on. o make improvements you first need to understand how you are performing. If you can?t get this basic information, you will never improve. You will not be able to make simple decisions related to maintenance, operations or production. Forget about planning, as you will only be guessing based on the numbers some stakeholder or your executive wants to see. The problem miners run into is not that the data doesn?t exist; it does, but typically it?s raw, it?s everywhere and its volume is huge. Today there is more on-board computing capability in shovels than we had on our desktops three years ago. Add other mobile equipment, plant systems and multiple OEM vendors to the equation and the challenge is daunting.

Molybdenite is the world’s principal source of rhenium (Re), a critical element in multiple high-tech applications. However, the Re contents in molybdenite vary by orders of magnitude on scales ranging from single grains to whole deposits. In order to better understand the systematics of this variation and what geochemical factors control molybdenite Re concentration, and hence overall Re resources, we examine global patterns in molybdenite Re contents through a compilation of > 3000 measurements of Re in molybdenite from > 700 mainly ore-bearing moderate- to high-temperature hydrothermal systems of different types. Our results are similar to but expand on those of earlier studies. Rhenium concentration in molybdenite has a lognormal distribution and varies systematically with type of geologic system, intrusive lithology, and Mo grade. The lowest-Re molybdenite occurs in greisens (geometric mean 1 ppm ± a multiplicative standard deviation of 9), quartz vein-hosted W-Sn deposits (2 ± 5 ppm), unmineralized granites and granodiorites (12 ± 8 ppm), intrusion-related deposits (24 ± 8 ppm), and porphyry W-Sn deposits (16 ± 11 ppm). Rhenium is most enriched in molybdenites from volcanic sublimates (23,800 ± 5 ppm), with skarn Fe and Au (560 ± 5 ppm and 540 ± 3 ppm respectively) and porphyry Cu and Cu-Au deposits next (470 ± 4 and 430 ± 7 ppm respectively). Among porphyries, skarns, and quartz vein-hosted deposits, Re is most highly concentrated in molybdenites from Cu and Au systems and its concentration decreases systematically through Cu-Mo, Mo, Sn, and W deposits. In nearly all cases, molybdenites from systems associated with intermediate igneous rocks contain more Re than molybdenites from systems of the same type with more felsic rock associations. The disparity between Re contents of molybdenite in felsic and intermediate systems is largest for porphyries, quartz vein-hosted, and skarn deposits and is near zero for subeconomic or barren granite and granodiorite Mo systems; felsic intrusion-related deposits have slightly higher molybdenite Re than their equivalents associated with intermediate intrusions. In most systems, molybdenite Re content does not correlate with metal grade, but may have an inverse correlation with Au grade in intrusion-related deposits (based on a small number of data points) and does exhibit a strong inverse correlation with deposit Mo grade. Dilution of Re through larger amounts (higher deposit grades) of molybdenite explains about 40% of this correlation, but the relative enrichment of Re in molybdenite from low-Mo deposits must also reflect some selective enrichment of Re/Mo in porphyry Cu systems compared to porphyry Mo systems. We found no evidence for secular increase or other systematic temporal variation in molybdenite Re content. The data regarding the use of molybdenite Re content as a proxy for mantle influence are ambiguous. Nearly all observed empirical correlations can be traced back to differences in redox state and sulfide concentration, the two geochemical factors identified here and by previous experimental work as the controlling influences on Re mobility under hydrothermal conditions. Hydrothermal systems with reducing conditions (W- and Sn-rich) tend to have low molybdenite Re even though compiled whole-rock data indicate that their source rocks have as much or more Re as those of more oxidized systems (e.g., Cu-rich). Vapor-phase exsolution, crustal assimilation, and mixing with external fluids may all enrich molybdenite Re concentrations in individual deposits and deposit types, but their extent and importance in overall hydrothermal concentration of Re is uncertain. Thus, it appears that the available molybdenite Re resource in an ore deposit largely depends on how the deposit’s redox and sulfidation conditions have varied over time and space during the timespan of hydrothermal activity. Oxidized, high-sulfide conditions tend to concentrate Re in molybdenite, whereas reducing conditions tend to leave Re dispersed at low concentrations in the bulk rock.

Gekko Systems Pty Ltd have developed the Python Underground Processing Plant for the concentration of gold and sulfide ores. The Python plant has an established flow sheet including fine crushing, screening, gravity separation and flotation which aims to concentrate the valuable minerals (gold/sulfides). The aim of the plant is to achieve high valuable recovery into a mass yield of 10 - 30 per cent to reduce the amount of material that is needed to be taken to downstream processing. This paper examines the test work protocol for testing an ore to assess its suitability for the Python flow sheet. This paper will discuss the test methods employed to determine crushing requirements, continuous gravity recovery and flotation performance and how the results relate to Python design for the comminution, gravity and flotation circuits. Results from past test work will be discussed.

Flotation gases and conditioning of the pulp with them are one of the important parameters of flotation and should be taken into account especially in the flotation of sulphide ores. In this study, flotation of pure chalcopyrite and pyrite samples were investigated with air, oxygen and nitrogen as flotation gas and the effect of conditioning with these three gases also were performed. Flotation gas was introduced for 5min, 10min, 15min and 20 min. For chalcopyrite flotation there was no drastic change in recovery when air, oxygen and nitrogen were used as flotation gas but conditioning the pulp with oxygen for 10 minutes increased the recovery about 8% where pulp potential has been approximately 25 mV with chalcopyrite and 150 mV with platinum electrodes. Conditioning with all three gases decreased the pyrite recovery by about 20% with 20 minutes conditioning. Pulp potential decreased in the presence of nitrogen while conditioning with air and oxygen increased the pulp potential for both electrodes. Generally potential increased for both minerals with oxygenation and aeration time but it was stable or slightly decreased with nitrogenation. Comparison of the gases showed that the different flotation gases do not effect flotation recovery but conditioning the pulp with these gases at pre-flotation effects chalcopyrite and pyrite flotation recovery, most dramatically pyrite.

It is predicted that underground coal mines in the Bowen Basin will have a significant rise in heat problems as mines aim to increase production, depth of extraction and length of longwall panels. At an actual Bowen Basin mine, extended longwall panels greater than 4 km in length are planned to be mined at depths with a virgin rock temperature (VRT) of more than 40¦C. Research has been completed into the reasons for the substantial increase in temperature at the face for underground coal mines in the Bowen Basin. An analysis into heat loads produced at the Bowen Basin mine for the development and production phases shows a significant amount of additional cooling will be required to ensure safe working temperatures. All of the major sources of heat, which included both natural and mine induced heating, were considered for the analysis. Maximum heat loads were assessed, together with peak intake surface temperature to determine the maximum cooling capacity required at a Bowen Basin mine. These maximum heat loads were assessed for a specific longwall panel, Longwall A, which extends to over 4.1 km in length and at a maximum depth of over 330 m, resulting in a VRT above 40¦C. The cooling system positional efficiency was analysed, determining that underground cooling via an indirect heat exchanger was preferred to increasing the capacity of the current bulk air cooling (BAC) on the surface. The Bureau of Mines investigated the resources, costs, capacities, market relationships, and short- and long-run supply of phosphate rock and phosphoric acid. The 206 mines and deposits evaluated in 30 market economy countries contain an estimated 35.1 billion mt of recoverable phosphate rock (demonstrated resource level). U.S. resources are sufficient to satisfy the domestic and export markets for phosphate products well beyond the year 2000. Because of resource depletion at current producers, however, new properties (with higher cost levels) need to be developed if U.S. production levels are to be maintained. Existing worldwide capacity can satisfy expected demand through the early 1990's. Expansion at existing mines or low demand growth could mean that no new property development will be needed before the late 1990's. Worldwide, almost $8 billion could be required for development of new phosphate rock properties between now and the year 2000, given 3-pct annual growth in demand. Most properties that could develop in the 1990's would require price increases of 20 to 50 pct to break even. To earn a 15-pct rate of return on investment, prices must rise to nearly double the present level of $24 to $29 per metric ton.

"Saponite is a valuable marketable product widely used foundry, metallurgy and construction, in the chemical, food and consumer goods industries, in medicine, and in agriculture.The feasibility of producing of high-quality construction materials with enhanced physical-chemical and decorative characteristics from saponite-containing products has been given a scientific basis and experimentally validated. The compressive strength of the samples in the sintering temperature range of 800-1000 ?? varied between 35 and 80.9 MPa; the bending strength 8 and 26.7 MPa, which is superior to the high-grade ceramic bricks of the M-300 brand. It has been established that the saponite-containing product obtained using the electrochemical separation of process water has a high sorption capacitance relatively the heavy-metal ions such as nickel and copper (40.7 and 99.8 mg/g, respectively). As a result of sintering at 750 ?? the sorption capacity of the sorbent for the nickel and copper ions increased to 194.2 and 212.8. Using the XRD and SEM with energy-dispersive spectroscopy studies, we diagnosed the metal-containing phases and validated the metal sorption mechanism.This study opens up the possibility of practical realization of the saponite-containing product as high-quality building materials and heavy-metal sorbents while addressing the issue of process water treatment. INTRODUCTION The Lomonosov deposit of the Archangelsk diamondiferous province accommodates 10 kimberlite pipes. The anticipated volume of diamond-bearing ore and dump rock to be removed before reaching the open-pit mining limit is 300 mln t (Karpenko, 2009; Bezborodov, etal. 2003). Rock in the deposit is almost completely displaced by clay minerals, predominantly saponite, amounting to 90% in the vent facies (Karpenko, 2009)."

"The Avon mica district of Latah County, Idaho, is situated on a heavily forested spur of the Thatuna Range at an average altitude of 4,000 feet. The nearest rail connection is at Avon, a small farming settlement 7 miles to the south. The main supply point is Moscow, Idaho, which is 35 miles by graveled and graded county roads from Avon.Discovery of mica-bearing pegmatites in 1885 was followed in 1888 by exploitation of several outcrop deposits. Although factual data are unavailable, past production appears to have been well in excess of $100,000. Recent production (September 191 to April 1945) amounted to 65,824.78 pounds of trimmed sheet mica and 33,294.17 pounds of punch mica having a total gross value of $434,298.The several properties of the district are variously owned by estates, individuals, and the State. When active, all wore under lease or sublease to individual operators.The deposits are in an area of pre-Cambrian schists adjacent to a small granitic outlier of the Idaho batholith. The pegmatites are nearly concordant in dip and strike to the foliation of the enclosing schists. The more persistent bodies are usually tabular, lenticular, or pegmatite. Individual dikes range in length from 10 feet or less to 300 feet.The recoverable crude mica content of the pegmatites ranges downward from a maximum of 115 pounds per ton of pegmatite mined. Material discarded in rifting and trimming operations further reduces recovery to a maximum of 5 pounds per ton -of pegmatite mined. The average recoverable sheet content of the 'recently operated .deposit is estimated at 2 pounds per ton of pegmatite -mined. Available data indicate that about 21 percent of the district's recent production of trimmed sheet mica has been ""Group A"" material suitable for exacting condenser requirements. A few of the dikes contain local concentrations of beryl.Reserves of the three known major deposits of the district are estimated at about 600 to 1,000 tons of combined ""indicated"" and ""inferred"" crude block mica. One of these deposits is inferred to contain between 150 and 450 tons of beryl.It is believed that those mica reserves are minable only under a cost-market price ratio similar to that established during 1943 and 1944. A small part of the reserves can be ""high-graded"" under the present price structure. Profitable recovery of the beryl would require a market price four to five times that paid in 1944.Preliminary examination of the Avon mica district was made by the Bureau of Mines in the summer and fall of 1942. A study of the Muscovite mine and a brief reconnaissance of the surrounding district led the Bureau to recommend that the district be explored by angle-dozer trenching."

The Virginia Center for Coal and Energy Research has been developing models of wireless signal propagation in underground coal mines since 2007. The current mine propagation modeling software, named COMMS, is able to locate potential broadcast points for underground wireless mesh systems and estimate their coverage. COMMS utilizes programmed routines to calculate necessary values to both quantitatively and qualitatively solve and analyze predicted coverage areas. The program approximates the spatial relationships that are encountered, such as ventilation regulators, belts and other obstructions. Using this model for propagation allows the optimal communications node locations to be calculated, by using lessons learned from current installations and experience with the new technology. In addition, the optimization can be calculated by checking all possible combinations of broadcast locations. This paper compares these optimization calculation methods. The ability to solve a mine?s communication network provides a pre-installation mine network design map, creates coverage maps of the mine and allows planning for future communication activities

Melting has become a popular pre-treatment method for municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration residues in Japan. Although the method is effective in stabilizing the hazardous organic sub-stances such as dioxin, it concentrates the heavy metals such as Zn, Pb, Cu, and Cd in a newly formed fly ash (melting fly ash). Melting fly ash is classified as a hazardous waste because of the leaching potential of these heavy metals in landfill environment. Extraction and recovery of these metals seem to be more environmentally and economically attractive than disposing the material to landfill after immobilization process. This study proposes a Carrier-in-Pulp (CIP) method as a new hydrometallurgical route to reject and recover heavy metals from fly ash. In this method, a carrier material which recovers the extracted metals is added simultaneously with fly ash to leaching solutions and is harvested from the pulp by physical separation method like magnetic separation or sieving. To demonstrate the effect of CIP method, shaking flask experiments were conducted under various conditions using NaCl solution as lixiviant and iron powder or granular activated carbon as carrier materials. In the CIP method using iron powder, more than 97 wt% of Pb and Zn were extracted from the ash to the solution phase. However, the iron powder which was harvested from the pulp by magnetic separation, recovered only Pb (more than 94%) through cementation, leaving behind Zn ions in the solution phase. Due to this problem, granular activated carbon (GAC) was considered as an alternative carrier material. Single- and multi-metal adsorption experiments using granular activated carbon were conducted as a preliminary study. Around 85% Pb and 88% Zn were recovered by GAC in the single-metal adsorption experiment, while 60% Pb and 70% Zn in the multi-metal experiment. These results showed that activated carbon was superior to the iron powder since it was able to recover both Pb and Zn through adsorption. The leaching test conducted on the residue after the CIP-Fe treatment revealed that the solubilisation of Pb was successfully suppressed to meet landfilling guidelines.

"The Flin Flon base metal mine, owned and operated by the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, is on the Manitoba-Saskatchewan interprovincial boundary at a point 400 miles north of the International boundary. The deposit was discovered in 1914 by Thomas Creighton and the Mosher and Dion brothers. Since production commenced in 1930, 25,000,000 tons of ore have been mined. On January 1st, 1946, reserves were estimated to be 26,000,000 tons, averaging 2.99 per cent copper, 4.i4 per cent zinc, and 0.089 oz. gold and 1.25 oz. silver per ton. In addition to the four metals named, others recovered from the ore include- cadmium, selenium, and tellurium. The mine workings extend to the 3,750-foot level, but little development work has yet been carried on below 3,250 feet.The known ore occurs in six lenticular to irregular bodies within a zone 500 feet wide. These bodies average 900 feet long, 70 feet wide, 1,500 feet in vertical depth, and 2,500 feet in length along the plunge. They were formed by replacement of the country rock and include ore of two types, solid sulphides and disseminated sulphides. Seventy per cent of the total known ore is of the solid sulphide type. This consists essentially of metallic sulphides- chiefly pyrite- with included remnants of the host rock, and additional quartz and carbonate. In places, the ore exhibits banding, inherited from pre-existing structures. The disseminated ore occurs usually on the footwall side, and along the bottom of the plunge, of the solid sulphide bodies."

Mining is likely to be targeted by The United States Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) as one of its key enforcement targets for fiscal year 2002-2003. Identifying the mining industry as an enforcement target, coupled with an increase in enforcement activity in recent years, places each mining operation at increased risk of receiving enforcement attention. A properly developed and implemented Environmental Management System (“EMS”) tailored for your operation is invaluable in reducing the risk of incurring liability for non-compliance. At the heart of an effective EMS is an audit program that checks the company’s compliance with environmental requirements. In addition, audit privilege (in select states), voluntary self-disclosure, and the attorney-client privilege serve as very effective tools for managing those liabilities that may arise during auditing a well-developed program. Of course, these latter tools are effective only if the auditing program is properly structured and properly managed. EPA and some states also provide varying degrees of immunity for environmental violations that are voluntarily disclosed in writing by the company. However, self-disclosure laws and policies typically prescribe stringent requirements for parties seeking to take advantage of them. For example: U.S. EPA has recently extended the time period in which to provide full written self-disclosure to 21 days. However, U.S. EPA’s revised Self-Disclosure guidance also addresses when a company obtains knowledge of a violation for purposes of triggering the 21-day clock and specifically extends the knowledge requirement to include the company’s agents and consultants. This expansion increases the difficulty companies may have in clearly defining and managing when they obtained knowledge. Opencast mining method is one of the most productive mining methods available at present, which is generally associated with the removal and handling of a huge amount of overburden material. Hence it imposes a serious challenge of dump slope stability and that too, mainly in the case of internal dumps. The study is primarily focused on the stability of dragline dumps and the subsequent development of a rating system to classify the stability of dragline dump profiles. Initially, numerical simulation is executed through RS2 (Version 9.0) software, which is based on the finite element method. Thereafter, simulation results are used to perform the sensitivity analysis of various geometrical and strength parameters of the dump slope, and the two-factor interaction method is also incorporated into the analysis, this method included the dependency of closest parameters while calculating the sensitivity index, and thereafter, it is converted into the rating of each parameter. The strength parameter like the angle of friction and the geometrical parameter like slope angle of the bench between the coal-rib roof and dragline sitting level are assigned the highest rating value. Based on the overall rating of the dragline dump, the dump slopes are classified into various classes, viz., very safe, safe, vulnerable, unstable, and highly unstable. This classification proved to be handy in the quick estimation of the stability of the dragline dump and also gives an idea of designing optimum and safe dragline dump profiles. The developed classification chart has been validated by the previous research works and has found similar results.

The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Sur- vey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. This volume is the fourth of a four-volume final report on research carried out under a contract from the U.S. Bureau of Mines on the development of a computer simulation model for surface mine reclamation planning. The other volumes are titled as follows: Volume I: Ore Reserve Estimation, Volume II: Dragline Model, and Volume III: Mine Coordinate Generator System. The Open Pit Materials Handling Simulator (OPMHS) was first developed" in 1971 and modified and updated in 1975. The present work is an update of the 1975 version and provides a direct link between the geology and reserves system and the various activities of the mining equipment in a mining system. Also, the modeling techniques in OPMHS/2 have incorporated a flexible method for describing various equipment (shovels, trucks, belts, trains, etc.), locations, their sequence of operations, place changes, and their interactions. These features allow for studying mining equipment selection, mining method analysis and reclamation planning. This report describes the Open Pit Materials Handling Simulator Version 2 (OPMHS/2). The report details the program features, operation, and application. Through an extensive set of appendices, the data input sequence, input variable definitions, sample data listing and program output are presented in detail.

Garden Well is a shear-hosted Archaean orogenic gold deposit located 100 km north of Laverton, Western Australia. The Garden Well processing plant is designed for a nominal 491 t/h milling rate and annual capacity of 4 Mt. The plant has three key innovations:1. a scrubbing circuit, expected to reduce grinding power consumption by up to 20 per cent2. a secondary cycloning/gravity circuit, providing a second opportunity for gravity gold recovery (additionally, the circuit effectively increases the leach residence time of the coarse gold bearing fraction of the leach feed by approximately 60 per cent, without any additional tankage)3. the use of mid-stream oxygenation to enhance gold recovery.The Garden Well deposit is free-milling with overall laboratory gravity/leach gold recoveries exceeding 95 per cent at a P80 grind size of 150 ¦m. Three mineralogical domains have been identified: oxide, transition and fresh, with the fresh domain having subdomains of fresh ultramafic and fresh shale. There is a high component of gravity recoverable gold in all three domains.This paper will discuss these innovations and the design challenges and the risk mitigation strategies that were adopted to ameliorate the prototyping risk. El presente texto señala la historia y desarrollo económico de la plata como metal peruano en el mundo. El Perú antiguo y tradicional fue productor de este metal desde el siglo XIV. Sin embargo, la mayor parte de esa riqueza fue llevada a la metrópoli española y en consecuencia, se optó por la producción de oro. El Perú produce solo el 0.26 °/o de la producción anual de oro con un valor de U$ cinco millones. Si se lograse reponer el antiguo sistema mundial de monetización de la plata, este sistema recuperaría el valor que tuvo hace 100 años a.C o hasta fines de la Colonia española, o sea la relación de 15 a 1 con respecto al valor del oro.
