There are various methods currently in use to determine detonation performance of bulk explosive products including velocity of detonation (VOD), high speed photographic analysis, fragmentation analysis and unconfined detonation of samples. For assessment prior to detonation the current practice is limited to a measurement of cup density. This paper presents additional techniques that have been developed to provide measurement and assessment of bulk explosive products. Techniques applicable prior to detonation include a mobile laboratory to allow on-site chemical and physical analysis of sensitised products and ‘in-hole density’ measurement to monitor the in-hole density during sleep time. Assessment of detonation performance is achieved using detonation pressure sensors. These sensors allow measurement of detonation pressure, average VOD, propagation time and magnitude of the pressure induced in the explosive column by detonation of adjacent blastholes.CITATION:Cavanough, G, Torrance, A C, Rock, J and Olsson, A, 2015. Mineral property valuations to be used for Canadian securities regulatory purposes must comply with CIMVal1. The technical basis for a CIMVal report is the same as that required for a technical report that complies with NI 43-1012. NI 43-101 describes the content to be covered in a technical report, while also covering other requirements, one of which is that the report should be based on a property visit. CIMVal is based on five tenets that the valuator must follow: ? Materiality. ? Independence. ? Transparency. ? Competence. ? Reasonableness. Upon its adoption by CIM Council in 2003, it was hoped that the new CIMVal code would be adopted without change by the several Canadian regulators.

Mineral production in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland during the last ten years has been confined to the sporadic production of industrial minerals—for example marble, anorthosite, limestone, talc and silica. From 1962 onwards there has been an upsurge in mineral exploration in the Highlands, increasing in tempo from 1966 onwards due to the efforts of the Institute of Geological Sciences, the Highlands and Islands Development Board, and private and public companies. Geological, chemical and economic aspects of some of the more interesting mineral prospects are discussed: these include anorthosite, feldspar, magnetite, quartzite and brucite marble. Reference is made to a geochemical survey undertaken in the Rosehall district of Sutherland, the results obtained being summarised. Problems that affect the future of mineral exploration in the Highlands are stated.

Rhenium is primarily recovered as a by-product from molybdenum roasting circuits. However, rhenium is also present in copper heap leach solutions at very low concentrations and represents a potential new rhenium source. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold has developed a new process using carbon adsorption followed by ion exchange or solvent extraction to concentrate rhenium from less than 1 ppm to 15 g/L. The product is compatible as a feed to an existing rhenium processing plant. A pilot plant operated at Freeport-McMoRan?s Sierrita mine has demonstrated the technical and financial feasibility of this new process.

This paper presents a case study in which a slope failure was observed on the west wall of the LAB Chrysotile mine in the vicinity of the main ramp in January 2010. Airborne LiDAR results were used to evaluate slope geometry before and after the failure occurred. Back analysis of the failure was performed to assess rock mass properties at the slope scale using various numerical techniques: limit equilibrium, finite elements and fracture networks. The various approaches correlated well with field observations.

"The art of treating ores by the chloride volatilization process is still in the experimental stage. The process has not been sufficiently developed along chemical and metallurgical lines to state definitely just what place it will occupy in the metallurgical industry. The theory upon which the process operates has received the attention of prominent metallurgists for the past twenty years, and research and experimental work has been conducted by many investigators.Much of the experimental work done has never been published, and it seems that the accumulation of such results if made known would be an important aid to the further development of the process. The object of this paper is, therefore, to bring salient features of the process to the attention of the metallurgical industry, both for the purpose of furnishing information, and receiving from interested parties any comments which the reading of this article may suggest. A bulletin covering the work done at the Intermountain experiment station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, situated at Salt Lake City, Utah, is in course of preparation.The chloridizing roast is usually accompanied by appreciable losses due, to the volatilization of the metals as chlorides during the roast, these losses often running as high as 30 per cent, depending upon the temperature, the character of the ores and the associated gangue material. It was not until 1891 that Croasdale, (Croasdale, Stuart, Engineering and Mining Journal, Aug. 29 1903) by observing this and stack deposits from the chloridizing roast, recognized the possibility of making volatilization a major instead of a minor feature of the roast. He then made tests on a large number of tires from different, localities, the result of which showed the, general application of the process. The main difficulty, as stated, by Croasdale, was the lack of a suitable means for recovering the fume from the furnace gasesIn 1913, Cottrell (See Mining and Scientific Press, March 29, 1913; alsoTrans. The mining industry uses many types of mineral and metallurgical plants to produce saleable product from ore mined. Plant design history has left current operations with a mixture of manual operation and various forms of automated process controls. Consequently, we typically see high-variability in the continuous operations together with a shortfall in the attainment of full capacity or higher utilisation of consumables.At a level of best practice, ‘operational performance excellence’ focuses on process control, using automation and control systems to deliver process optimisation. This more sophisticated delivery is a great deal more difficult than the first stage of equipment selection/installation. It includes the appropriate selection of the right instrumentation and control system, key process knowledge, individuals with a solid control engineering background/experience and the essential backing/support of the operations management team together leading to higher-value delivery. Robust solutions can be realised, considerably minimising process variation, thus leading to process optimisation. This approach results in an easier, efficient and safer process while providing considerable returns for the plant owners.How variable are your processes, and do you maintain optimised process performance with dedicated resources, modern instrumentation, ‘best practice’ control systems and performance monitoring tools? In this paper, these questions and their possible answers are discussed.I say we can do much more and be ‘more efficient’ in our efforts to remain competitive. Titanium forms several compounds with oxygen and also is able to dissolve interstitially about 33 atomic percent of oxygen. Starting with titanium dioxide, reduction becomes increasingly difficult as oxygen is removed; and the final step, be reduction of the titanium-oxygen interstitial solutions, is by far the most difficult. The possibility of reducing titanium oxide, or of purifying titanium containing oxygen, by treatment with certain more volatile metals has been a subject of considerable interest. Theoretical appraisal of the limitations of this possibility, however, has been hampered by lack of adequate information on the thermodynamic properties of the titanium-oxygen solutions. The purpose of the present work was to remedy this difficulty by expanding the thermodynamic knowledge regarding these solutions. The experimental work involved three types of calorimetry and furnished the following information: (1) Heats of formation of 11 titanium-oxygen solutions, in the range of 0 to 10 wt.-percent oxygen, were determined at 298.15° K. As a byproduct, an improved value of the heat of formation of rutile was obtained, which, in turn, led to improved values of the heats of formation of the lower titanium-oxygen compounds. (2) Low-temperature heat-capacity data and entropies at 298.15°K in were determined for 2 representative titanium-oxygen interstitial solutions. (3) High-temperature heat-content data were obtained for 2 titanium-oxygen interstitial solutions to about 1,600° K.

"IntroductionBACK IN THE nineteen-thirties, when Eldorado was a private company and was preparing to become Canada's first radium producer, the Mines Branch in Ottawa did much work on the development of chemical processes for the Port Hope refinery (1).In 1945, after the Canadian Government had taken over Eldorado for •atomic energy reasons, the Mines Branch was called upon again, this time to help out by looking into ways and means of improving ore treatment methods for the mine at Great Bear Lake. A group of technical men was assembled to devote full attention to this work, which was known as the Eldorado Project.Three years later, in 1948, the Government decided to reopen the development and operation of uranium properties to private enterprise.Since it is a function of the Mines Branch to assisit private development of Canadian mineral resources, this new uranium policy made it important for the Branch to be in a position where it could provide up-to-date services, technical assistance, and information relating to treatment of radioactive ores, mineralogy of radioactive ores, and assay methods for radioactive ores.At the same time, .because of the demand for increased uranium production, lower grade ores had definitely come into the picture, ores that might be of decidedly lower grade than, say, Eldorado pitchblende, and of entirely different nature."

Soil next to an abandoned smelter near Socorro, New Mexico, has the highest Pb concentration in the clay-size fraction, although this fraction accounted for only 1 to 3 wt. % of the soil. The depth of contamination was determined in areas relatively undisturbed since the smelter was abandoned about 98 years ago. Lead concentration drops to background levels below a depth of 3 inches. A mineralogical examination of the fine-size fraction of Pb-contaminated soils revealed an absence of crystalline Pb compounds. We conclude that Pb is present either as amorphous phases or adsorbed on the surfaces of soil particles. Yet, because of the alkalinity of the soil, the movement of Pb-bearing particles controls Pb mobility, not chemical transport in solution. Plant material from the site contained elevated Pb levels that increased as the amount of Pb in the soil increased. Of the types of material tested, rabbit bush showed the greatest increase of Pb levels. Lead levels were highest in rabbit bush roots, whereas levels in creosote were highest in foliage. Levels in cactus varied. The amount of Pb due to dust incorporated in plant tissue is almost negligible compared to the amount absorbed through the plant vascular system.

The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Survey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. OBJECTIVES OF RADIATION MONITORING Monitoring is a tool used in the practice of radiation protection. The primary reasons for monitoring are to reduce radiation exposures to levels that are as low as reasonably achievable and to assure that no individual receives a dose exceeding the maximum individual dose limit. The documentation of radiation doses for legal, medical, or epidemiological reasons is a subordinate function of any monitoring program. The investment in radiation monitoring programs should be guided by four criteria: (1) the detection and avoidance of unnecessary exposures, (2) the magnitude of potential health risks, (3) the determination of combined doses and risks with adequate confidence, and (4) the verification of compliance with established limits. FIRST CRITERION: DOSE REDUCTION - DETECT AND CORRECT UNNECESSARY EXPOSURES The system of dose limitation advocated by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP, 1977), and subscribed to in a broad sense by various regulatory agencies, is comprised of three essential ingredients: (1) [justification] of any practice that produces radiation doses by some commensurate net benefit, (2) [optimization] of radiation control measures by reducing doses to levels that are as low as reasonably achievable, and (3) [limitation] of individual doses to preclude inequities and [moldistribution] of risks. All too often, only the third criterion - the limitation of individual doses to prescribed regulatory limits - is explicitly addressed in everyday radiation protection programs. The emphasis of most exposure control and monitoring efforts appears to be directed toward limiting and documenting individual doses that might approach the legal limit. The first two criteria, i.e. justification and optimization, should contribute to a rationale for allocating monitoring efforts. When applied to individuals, these criteria mean the detection and elimination of unnecessary exposures. This should be a high priority of any monitoring program. Measurements should be directed toward detecting inoperative or ineffective control measures, whether or not there is a risk of exceeding the individual dose limits. The ICRP recommends a procedure that can be used effectively to reduce unnecessary exposures. A n investigation level should be established at an exposure rate substantially lower than the regulatory limit, e.g. 30% of the limit (ICRP 26, 1977, p.33). Measurements obtained during routine monitoring that exceed the investigation level are evaluated with respect to cause and potential reduction. To be effective, the evaluation results should be formally recorded and conveyed both to management and to the workers involved. Although the investigation level recommended by the ICRP is based on a fixed exposure rate or derived air concentration, an equally effective evaluation program may be based on the investigation of a percentage of all measurements. For example, one might investigate the highest 5% or a random selection of all measurements. In any case, the objective is to detect and correct situations that are producing unnecessary exposures. SECOND CRITERION: MONITOR IN PROPORTION TO THE MAGNITUDE OF RISK The ICRP criteria apply generally to all radiation exposures. However, a second priority for monitoring programs should be established on the basis of the nature of the exposures and the magnitude of the health risks involved. Current practices in radiation protection are based on dose limits to specific organs and assessment of individual exposure pathways, with little consideration of the combined doses from various pathways. Although the intent of the ICRP recommendations was to limit the total dose to each critical organ, combined doses from external and internal sources are rarely determined. The recent recommendations of the ICRP (Publ. 26, 1977) are based on the limitation of total health risk from occupational radiation exposures. Implementation of this concept would necessarily require the measurement, calculation and summation of doses and concomitant risks to all organs of the body from all exposure pathways. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has taken the first step toward translating the ICRP recommendations into regulations. The proposed recommendations for Federal Radiation Protection Guidance for Occupational Exposures (USEPA, 1981) include provisions for summing the risk-weighted organ doses to determine compliance with an effective whole-body dose equivalent limit. Whether or not the proposed guidance is modified before final adoption, it seems clear that some version of dose summation and combined risk limitation will be included in future regulations. This paper outlines the trends in gold production since the discovery of America, in the world as a whole, and in the principal producing regions as well. World production climbed at an average rate of about 20,000,000 oz. per 5-year period until the record all-time output of 111,307,000 oz. in the period ending with 1915. Production fell off during the war period, but has been mounting since 1925, and will probably be nearly 100,000,000 oz. for the 5-year period ending in 1930. Total world production of gold from 1492 to the end of 1930, as closely as can be determined, is more than 1,061,000,000 fine ounces. More than one-half of this total, or about 575,000,000 oz., has been mined since 1900. In percentage of world production, the United States jumped from 4.8 per cent for the decade 1831-1840 to 44.5 per cent for the five years ending with 1855. This is the highest figure ever reached by this country, although, with the exception of the 10-year period ending 1865, it ranked first among the nationa from 1849 until the end of 1905. During the 5-year period ending with that year, the United States produced 24.7 per cent of the world's gold. The tremendous increase from South Africa following 1890 resulted in that country's becoming the largest contributor for the five years 1906-1910, a position it has held with increasing dominance ever since. Relegated to second place in the period 1906 to 1910, the United States produced nearly 20 per cent of the world's new gold until 1920. From 1921 to 1925 it averaged 13.6 per cent and since then it has continued to decline in relative importance, accounting for only 10.9 per cent in 1927. Final figures for 1930 may place Canada second among the gold producers of the world.

Randgold ResourcesÆ MorilaÆs gold leach plant is subjected to uncommon æoxygen stressesÆ. Feed ores exhibit very high oxygen demands, primarily caused by iron sulfides. In addition, ore oxygen demand varies significantly over time, as well as between different feed ore sources. The inability of the Morila gold leach plantÆs oxygenation system to cope with these high and fluctuating oxygen stresses manifested itself in variable gold residue grades, and cyanide consumption rates.Management launched a Morila oxygen system review project during September 2009, with the objective of auditing the performance of the then current oxygenation system, against required performance parameters as calculated from oxygen demands of the various feed ore types and targeted dissolved oxygen levels in the leach train.This paper describes the systematic changes made since 2009 to the Morila oxygen system in four main areas: O2-supply plant, O2-volumes, O2-controls and oxygenation equipment. Data are provided on corresponding improvements in leach plant performance. HYDROMETAL is using suitable technology to reintroduce lost metal units into the industrial cycle, thereby saving resources and energy while keeping the environment cleaner. Hydrometal is treating on average 60000 t per year of complex materials through a unique hydrometallurgical recycling concept. Zn, Cu, Sn, and Pb are the most important in volume, but in the last 15 years, Hydrometal has also developed a few specific recycling treatments for the minor metals including Ge, In, Co, etc. In 2010, Hydrometal commenced the recycling of RE (Rare Earths) from wastes generated by the RE refining industry in Europe and has decided to initiate new recycling projects for the RE recovery from the magnet or glass industries. Two case studies of recycling of materials in our integrated hydrometallurgical facility (Hydrométal) in Belgium are discussed: recycling of cerium from polishing sludges; and recycling of Ni- Co from cement produced in the zinc industry.

A machine that improves safety during the cutting of boxholes (ore-passes) and travelways in underground mining operations has delivered impressive results in trials conducted at a South African platinum mine. The technology is a joint effort by Sandvik Mining and Construction and platinum mining company Lonmin. The ABH 1600 boxhole borer was built by Voest-Alpine Bergtechnik, Sandvik’s Austrian subsidiary. It was delivered to the Lonmin Eastern platinum mine in February 2005. There, it was deployed underground on the Number 8 Level (320 m or 1,050 ft below the surface) at the mine’s Newman incline shaft.

"Gas dispersion in flotation defines the efficiency of the process once the chemistry has been established. There are three measurements, superficial gas velocity, gas holdup, and bubble size, which along with the derived quantity bubble surface area flux, are used to define “gas dispersion.” Sensors for measuring gas dispersion in industrial machines have been developed. This communication describes the working principle of the techniques and illustrates their potential to detect problems and to improve the operation of individual cells, banks and circuits. IntroductionFlotation is the most widely used process to separate minerals and is finding increasing application in other chemical and environmental fields. The process exploits natural and induced hydrophobicity to collect selected particles on the surface of a bubble. Once the process chemistry to control hydrophobicity has been established, the efficiency depends on dispersion of air to generate the necessary bubble surface area. Bubble surface area flux, Sb, the interfacial area generated per unit time and unit area of the machine, is emerging as one of the most useful variables to quantify gas dispersion (Gorain et al., 1997, 1998) although not without its critics (Heiskenan et al., 2001).For a bubble population of mean size db at a superficial gas velocity (or rate) Jg, the bubble surface area flux can be derived from geometric considerations (Finch et al., 1999):"

Concerning production of low phosphorus steel critical grades at ArcelorMittal Tubarão site, bottom blowing system plays a very important role. For those systems with independently controlled tuyeres, some non-uniform bottom blowing patterns seem to be promising in improving metal-slag mixing; however, based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results of ArcelorMittal Tubarão’s post oxygen bottom blowing, this may not be generalized. Also, from industrial trials it became clear that higher the bottom blowing flow rate, the closer were the end point P to the equilibrium. Despite this result an analysis of the apparent mass transfer coefficient has shown a week correlation with the classical power stir correlation suggesting a more complex kinetic limiting step for phosphorus removal.

"This paper outlines a comprehensive, cost-effective testing program for the acid-ferric sulfate heap leaching of oxide, supergene and primary copper ores. It is based on extensive experience in copper heap leaching and uses the many technological advances in the field developed over the past several decades. The approach described requires firstly a detailed resource evaluation, then a hydrodynamic characterization of representative samples and, finally, a focused metallurgical testing program. The principles communicated here can be applied to other acid leachable minerals. The program varies considerably from conventional testing in its disciplined, orderly, step-by-step approach, its application of hydrological and chemical principles to leaching, and its reliance on fewer, more tightly controlled column tests. The purpose of the test program is to optimize the financial, time and other resources devoted to the program, while minimizing the financial risks to the development company or companies and the project funding providers. IntroductionThe major goal of any process development testing program should be the successful implementation of the project. With respect to heap leaching, the metallurgical testing program plays a critical role in the larger objective, as described in Scheffel (2013, 2014). McNulty’s series of papers (1998, 2004, 2014) confirm that the success of any project is directly proportional to the extent and quality of the testing program on which the process is designed.Therefore, a key development objective is to conduct a well-focused metallurgical test program. While the primary focus of this paper is copper, the acid leaching of any substance would benefit from a similar approach.This paper addresses primarily the sulfate system, which is compatible with the bioleaching of sulfide minerals. Nicol et al. (2011) described the advantages of the chloride leaching of copper sulfide minerals. United States patents Nos. US 2009/0173188 A1, US 8,597,933 B2 and US2015/0232963 A1, assigned to BHP Chile Inc. and BHP Billiton S.A. Ltd, describe methods for both the oxidative and nonoxidative leaching of primary and secondary copper sulfides. Reyes (2013) and Ipinza and Flaquer (2014) described commercial applications of chloride-based heap leaching. The testing disciplines discussed in this paper will also apply to the development of an acidic chloride leaching system."
