This report is submitted in accordance with the provisions of the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of April 5, 1944 (30 U.S.C. 321-325, as amended), which require that: "The Secretary of the Interior shall render to Congress on or before the first day of January of each year a report on all operations under this Act." Owing to the broad scope of the content and the diversity of interests represented, the Annual Report for 1953 has been divided into two separate publications. Each has been published by the Bureau of Mines as a Report of Investigations, and the respective titles follow: R. I. 5043, Part I - Oil From Coal. R. I. 5044, Part II - Oil From Oil Shale. Identical in each report, the introduction summarizes research progress made in 1953 under the entire Synthetic Liquid Fuels program. A free copy of each of these publications may be obtained by a written request to the Bureau of Mines, Publications Distribution Section, 4800 Forbes Street, Pittsburgh 13, Pa. The R. I. number and title of the publication desired should be indicated.

Discussion by P.J Lloydt Broekman and Penman describe (J.S. Afr. Inst. Min. Metal., vol. 91, Aug. 1991, p. 261) the addition of sodium cyanide and zinc sulphate to the flotation feed at Prieska. They note that for 'safety sake, lime was added to the rod mil to raise the pH to 9,5', and that 'personnel working in the vicinity of the rod mil were required to wear gas masks'. Author reply to P.J. Lloyd We thank Dr Lloyd for his interesting contribution. As he correctly points out, the Prieska float had run with cyanide solutions at pH values of 6,4. In fact, it ran safely for extended period with the pH slightly below 6.

AT the present time the Climax Molybdenum Co. is the largest molybdenum producer in the world and the operator of the largest underground mine in North America. It has grown steadily and rapidly since its beginning in 1917. Only 250,000 lb of MoS2 were produced during the first year from 1917 to 1918 when the company was formed. Operations were suspended shortly thereafter because of the lack of a market and knowledge of the uses of molybdenum. During World War I it was used as a substitute for some rare metals and for minor chemical purposes. After 5 years of intensive research and sales promotion, Climax metallurgists succeeded in finding proper applications for the newly discovered metal and the mine was reopened in 1924. Demand for molybdenum increased gradually and in 1930, 3.5 million lb of MoS2 were produced. In the meantime, research work for additional uses of molybdenum continued until it had established itself as one of the most important alloying elements in producing high quality steels. After the start of World War 11, from January 1942 to October 1953, 43 million tons of molybdenum ore were mined and 484 million lb of MoS2 were produced. Climax mine is located in Colorado, 100 miles southwest of Denver and 12 miles northeast of Leadville on the Continental Divide of the Rocky Mountains. The principal mine workings range from 11,170 to 12,000 ft in elevation. Topographically, it lies in the base of a large cirque that is surrounded by Mt. Bartlett to the north, Clinton Peak and McNamee Peak to the east and Ceresco Ridge to the south. This cirque opens to the west and to the Ten Mile Valley.

This regional report covers 1993 mining and related activity in approximately 40 countries and territories of Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean Basin. These countries of the Western Hemisphere, as with the United States, are endowed with a great variety of minerals, including metals, industrial minerals, and energy minerals. For most of these countries, such mineral production helps form foundations for their economies and earns export credits including hard currencies. Table 1 depicts an overall view of Latin America and Canada's production of its major mineral commodities in 1993; subsequent tables show the role of Latin America and Canada in world mineral production, trade, and import dependency on minerals from Latin America and Canada by the United States. Overall, the picture emerges of a rich mineral diversity throughout the hemisphere, attracting increasing interest and investment, and complementing the mineral resources of the United States.

A mass spectral scheme of analysis was devised which can be used to identify individually a single compound from a larger group of similar compounds. Mass spectra for 32 alkyl aryl sulfides are provided for future reference work, and analytical correlations used in producing the analytical scheme are discussed. Some of the correlations show that base peaks are either the same mass as the parent peaks or may be derived from cleavage alpha to the sulfur atom with migration of one hydrogen to the sulfur atom. Other spectral consistencies provide means of separating ortho-, meta-, and paratolyl arrangements in an overall analytical scheme. Determinations of chain lengths and separation of isomeric species are also discussed.

The Ising model for the internal energy of a binary alloy has been used to obtain a general equation for the critical resolved shear stress of partially ordered crystals. The equation expresses the stress in terms of the Warren "alphas " and can be used to estimate the variation in strength with order without the assumption, present in the original formulation of this problem in terms of domain size, that order is complete within each domain and that the domains are of ungorm size and shape. In addition, it is the general equation, according to the Ising model, for strengthening by short-range order. Two applications of the equation are considered: One is an estimate of the variation in strength of CkAu with long-range order. The other is an estimate of the variation in strength of FeCo with quench temperature. Reasonable agreement is found with the variations reported in the literature. When the internal energy of an alloy crystal depends upon the distribution of solute, the strength of the crystal will also depend upon it because a portion of the applied stress for plastic deformation will be: where V is the volume of the crystal and E(E) is the energy change associated with the solute redistribution caused by the plastic strain, E. We expect T to equal zero for a crystal having a random arrangement of solute because the arrangement would remain random after plastic deformation. Likewise, we expect it to equal zero when the crystal is perfectly ordered because the motion of paired dislocations found in such crystals does not disrupt order. However, when short-range order exists or when long-range order is incomplete, plastic deformation will decrease the amount of order and additional work, proportional to the ordering energy, will be expended. Fisher' estimated T for crystals having short-range order by assuming an interaction energy between neighboring atoms and estimating the change in the number of unlike neighbors as a dislocation moved through the crystal. (His analysis was limited and several workers2"6 have since given more complete ones.) Fisher minimized the importance of a strengthening mechanism of this type for paired dislocations in a structure having long-range order. ~ottrell,' however, pointed out that T could be appreciable for ordered crystals having antiphase domains. He attributed the strengthening to the increase in surface energy of the domains as they were cut by paired dislocations. Ardley,' in his test of Cottrell's theory, found that r for Cu3Au crystals obeyed the equation: for 1 > t where 1 is the domain size, t is the domain wall thickness, and y is the surface energy of an antiphase boundary. His experiments represent the classic confirmation of the strengthening mechanism proposed by Cottrell. However, the assumptions involved in using Cottrell's theory are valid only for large domain size in CU~AU,~"~ i.e., when Eq. [2] reduces to: For small domains, ~linn~ has questioned Ardley's assumption that order was complete, and, indeed, Stoloff and ~avies" fpnd it incomplete until a size of approximately lOOA was reached. Even when the order within a domain is complete, it is not obvious how one determines the appropriate value for I in a structure where domains vary in size and are irregularly shaped. The purpose of this paper is to estimate T without restrictions upon the degree of order and domain shape. Our major assumption will be the use of a generalization of the model proposed by Bethe" (the Ising model) for the internal energy. This will in fact allow us to combine the theories for strengthening by short-range order and by antiphase domains into a single, general formalism. We will use the results to estimate the variation in strength of Cu3Au crystals with long-range order8 and the variation in flow stress of FeCo crystals with quench temperature.12'13 INTERNAL ENERGY For simplicity, we restrict our considerations to those binary solid solutions which can be described as an arrangement of atoms on a Bravais lattice. An atom site will be indexed by three numbers (PI, pz, p3) determined by the vector: from the origin fixed at atom (0, 0, 0) to the atom site where a', an, and a, are the lattice translation vectors. We write: For the energy of the crystal where pi(p) is the probability (either zero or one) of finding an atom of type i (i = 1, 2) at site (p), which is shorthand for (pl, pz, p3) and pj(p + r) is that for an atom of type j (j = 1, 2) at the site (p + r), which is shorthand for (pl + rl, The coupling parameter, resents the energy associated with the pair Pi(p), Pj(p + r). The crystal is assumed large enough so that surface effects can be neglected; therefore, trans-lational and inversion symmetry require the coupling parameters to obey the relations

Mont-Wright mining complex is an important asset of ArcelorMittal located in the province of Quebec, Canada. It is composed by Mont-Wright and Fire Lake mines, operating 365 days per annum, and producing 25 Mtpa of iron ore concentrate with 66 per cent Fe. Mont-Wright concentration plant is composed by seven lines with a flow sheet encompassing AG/SAG milling, primary and secondary classification stages, spiral concentrators (rougher, cleaner and recleaner stages) and dewatering unit operations. In this context, an equation called ‘Wrec’ was developed in 1971 with the objective of estimating the mass recovery of the different blocks in the beneficiation plant and support the mining planning works of Mont-Wright complex. This equation was based on the correlation between the results of heavy liquid tests performed with drill core samples and spiral concentrators pilot scale tests, returning an estimative of concentrator yield. However, since its first development, no updates have been done in the equation, which lead to some deviations from expected recoveries in the last years. This is probably due to the changes in the process and in the ore fed into the concentrator during the period. In this way, the study presented here corresponds to the execution of heavy liquid/spirals pilot scale tests with 26 composite samples collected at Mont-Wright deposit aiming at revising and updating ‘Wrec’ equation. Based on test work results, an updated formula was established to estimate the plant recovery and a comparison performed using industrial data showed that the old formula overestimated the real yield by 5.40 per cent, on average. At the end of the study the new equation was incorporated into the mining planning process.

"The inert anode is a key enabling technology for dramatic energy and emissions reduction in extractive metallurgy. In molten salts, the materials challenge is nearly insurmountable: the anode must conduct electrons at high temperature in a pure oxygen and molten salt environment. A solid electrolyte, e.g. zirconia, between the salt and anode removes the molten salt stability constraint, and can act as a container for a liquid metal anode. This can be liquid silver for oxygen-generating inert anodes, or several metals for natural gas-fueled anodes; it is possible to switch between these modes. The solid electrolyte brings several other benefits: it eliminates molten salt contamination of the anode gas, creates a reducing environment enabling low-cost steel vessels, increases current efficiency, and eliminates carbon contamination of the product. New developments presented here, including current collector and low-cost anode designs, amplify these benefits for producing aluminum, magnesium, rare-earths, and other metals.IntroductionReactive metals such as magnesium, aluminum and rare-earths play increasing roles in efficient transportation and clean energy. In response to new fuel economy standards, automotive OEMs are planning large increases in use of aluminum and magnesium to reduce vehicle weight. Rareearth permanent magnet motors and generators exhibit better power-to-weight and efficiency than induction motors and other designs, making this today's primary motor technology for hybrid and electric vehicles, and for wind turbines. Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries with lanthanum are dominant in hybrids. In 2011, transportation comprised 28.6 out of 103.1 EJ of US energy consumption [1] and 1,845 out of 5,471 million metric tonnes (MMT = 109 kg) CO2e of US greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions [1], creating big targets for economy-wide reductions.Unfortunately processes for making reactive metals for these applications are very inefficient and heavily-polluting. In primary aluminum production, Hall-Heroult cell electricity use [2] is more than double the reaction enthalpy due to heat losses through frozen cryolite side-walls and anode gases, graphite anode plants add significant energy use and GHG emissions [2] (see Table 1). Magnesium is even worse: silicothermic reduction by the Pidgeon process in China produces about 85% of the world's magnesium using coal or coke gas [3]. Chloride electrolysis begins with high-purity MgO and requires carbochlorination or hydrochlorination and costly chloride dehydration [4]—rendered unnecessary for aluminum by the Hall-Heroult cell. Production of neodymium and lanthanum with graphite anodes leads to inconsistent carbon content: small cells make 1 kg batches for analysis, sorting and sale by carbon content, with very high labor and analysis costs. And vertical electrodes give no incentive to reduce anode effect: some reports indicate that China's rare-earth metal industry emits more CF4 and C2F6—with global warming potential (GWP) 6500 and 9200 times CO2 respectively—than China's aluminum industry [5]."

"The requirement for environmental approvals and associated environmental impact assessments (EIAs) is now commonly regarded as a key milestone and body of work during project development. EIAs can be undertaken at various phases during project development, generally either:\ during the scoping or prefeasibility studies, where limited project information is available and the mitigation and management measures of the EIA become a set of criteria and commitments that control project design during the feasibility study, as an iterative approach whereby mitigation and management measures are developed through an integrated process with the engineering team, and measures are included in the feasibility study cost model following the feasibility study, where detailed project design information is available, the cost model is complete, and the EIA is an assessment of a fixed project with limited opportunities for mitigation and management measures to be integrated into engineering design. This paper investigates the advantages of integrating EIA into life-of-mine planning during the feasibility study phase, using the Tampakan Copper-Gold Project (the Project) as a case study. The Tampakan Project is located in the Philippines on the southern island of Mindanao. The Project involves the proposed development of three main areas of infrastructure:a large-scale, open pit copper-gold mine and associated mine site infrastructure (including tailings and mine waste storages, fresh water dam, concentrator, etc) a power station, port and filter plant (PPFP), located approximately 60 km from the mine a pipeline and transmission line linking the mine and PPFP sites.Examples of engineering measures developed through an iterative process to mitigate and manage predicted environmental and social impacts include design of water management infrastructure, modification of the disturbance footprint (eg roads realigned to avoid critical habitat) and realignment of project infrastructure to minimise impacted water catchments.CITATION:Blunt, J and Jones, J, 2012. It has been recognised worldwide that the liquefaction risk of unconstrained tailings stacks or cyclone underflow embankments requires careful consideration. The stability of a tailings deposit where the perimeter embankments are made up of hydraulic fill is often governed by post-liquefaction stability.Cyclones are frequently used around the world to classify tailings into a coarse underflow for building a tailings impoundment wall and a finer fraction that is disposed of into the basin. The shear strength of the tailings that form the outer embankment of a tailings storage facility (TSF) and the location of the phreatic surface are the two most significant factors influencing the structural integrity of the facility. The coarse underflow is placed in such a way as to contain the overflow, which is finer, has low strength and is often poorly consolidated.A cyclone field trial was undertaken at a gold mine in Western Australia to assess the feasibility of using the cyclone deposition method to optimise and increase the capacity of an existing tailings cell. The aim of the cyclone trial was to collect information to demonstrate to the client and the regulators that cyclone deposition was a feasible option for raising TSF embankments. The cyclone trial provided an opportunity to assess the cyclone under field conditions and the quantity and quality of the underflow fraction produced on-site. A variety of methods were used to assess the flow liquefaction susceptibility of the tailings underflow sample produced during the cyclone field trial.The field trial, laboratory testing and analysis will be discussed in this paper.CITATION:Boshoff, J and Reid, D, 2015. This paper is the result of a comparative study of ultimate coal analyses made and published by the United States Geological Survey. This study, at first casually undertaken to devise an acceptable classification of coals based on chemical analyses, was continued in connection with a microscopic examination of a number of the coals. The initial comparisons, made from a relatively small number of analyses, not only confirmed a previous conviction that the elimination of oxygen incident to the development of a coal is economically far more important than has been generally suspected, but also showed that oxygen is very nearly as harmful as ash in coal. The immediate purposes of the present study were: (a) To determine more definitely, from a comparative examination of a large number of ultimate analyses, the relative importance of oxygen as an impurity in various coals; (b) to illustrate the transition between various grades of coal of similar origin-transition mainly due to progressive devolatilization, brought about more or less directly by dynamic influences; (c) to ascertain the relative proportions of oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon in coking coals, especially with reference to a theory tentatively framed to explain the coking quality; and (d) to forecast the probabilities of successfully treating a large number of coals so as to render them amenable, in a softened condition, to satisfactory study under the microscope.

This paper considers the current methods of analysis employed, the validity of assumptions made and the reliability of results and predictions derived; where appropriate, alternative methods are proposed which are more accurate and can be applied with greater confidence. In regard to data collection, new local blasting data has been analysed and conclusions drawn but, due to the restricted amount of space available, reference to data set A only has been made in the text. The problem of mathematical model choice is considered and results for two and three parameter power laws are compared. The very important matter of parameter determination is discussed fully, with major emphasis being placed on the comparative merits of log-log linear, log-log planar and direct power law regression. Supporting data analysis examples are included. Assumptions regarding the normality of ‘best-fit’ regression model residual distributions are questioned and the reliability of associated safety limit determinations is discussed.

The Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey completed a 4-yr (1979-82) mineral appraisal of the Chugach National Forest (CNF), AK. This report summarizes the Bureau's placer gold studies in the CNF. Placer mining from the mid-1890's through 1982 produced an estimated 133,800 oz of gold, of which two-thirds was produced prior to 1920. As much as 6,800 oz of placer gold was produced from 1979 to 1982. Most production came from Crow, Canyon, and Resurrection Creeks. Five types of placer gold deposits were identified in the CNF: (1) alluvial placers, (2) bench placers, (3) eluvial placers, (4) glacial placers, and (5) marine placers. Placer sampling indicated a potential for gold production from alluvial and bench placers associated with historically mined drainages such as Crow, Canyon, Resurrection, Sixmile, and Mills Creeks and from unmined drainages including the Avery, Kings, Snow, Copper, and Tasnuna Rivers and several smaller streams throughout the CNF. Results of fineness tests indicated that gold from the CNF ranges from 455 to over 950 fine. Subsequent investigations in drainages with anomalous placer sample values also identified previously unknown lode mineralization.

The vision-based approach to process control involving fine particles in harsh on-line environments is discussed in this paper. The sensor equipment at the process location, consisting of a light source and a CCD camera provides RS-170 B&W video output. The video can be seen on a process monitor in the control room and is sent to a computer based Vision Processor. The Vision Processor contains a video digitizer and Canty developed software that extracts process information. The iron mine application controls thickener agent feed rate and thus settling pond overflow clarity. The sensor is mounted in the overflow flume of the outdoor settling pond and is used year around in the Minnesota weather. Alternate control system needs a low flow water sample which is subject to freezing in winter. The computer based vision processor provides 4-20 mA analog outputs for real time control as well as file archive for a history record.

If humanity is truly serious about reducing emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, today’s power plants burning fossil fuels will have to be replaced by power plants that do not emit CO₂. Unless carbon capture/sequestration becomes practical, the new power plants will be hydroelectric, wind, solar or nuclear installations. Hydroelectricity requires the appropriate geography. Solar installations can only deliver power as and when sunshine is available, and wind installations when the wind blows. Therefore, power from these sources will be intermittent, but the demand for electricity does not follow the patterns of sun and wind. That will require large-scale electricity storage and/or load following by the remaining power suppliers, increasingly so as the use of fossil fuelled power generation declines. Modern nuclear power plants are designed for demand following. However, operating at lower than design output has a negative impact on the economics of nuclear power plants because the overall cost of the electricity they generate is dominated by capital cost. Primary (blast furnace) iron smelting is responsible for a significant part of global CO₂ emissions because the reagent used is carbon. Were it available in sufficient quantity (and at a low enough cost), hydrogen could replace carbon in the manufacture of raw direct reduced iron (DRI), using technology such as modified HYL (Tenova Hyl, 2018) or Midrex (Ravenscroft, 2017). This paper examines a scenario in which, instead of demand following, nuclear power stations are operated at their design capacities and surplus power is used to generate hydrogen in off-peak periods. This hydrogen is then used to replace carbon in the manufacture of raw steel.

"Foreword by Emily SarverAssistant professor, Mining and Minerals Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VAThe Mineral Processing Division hosted its fifth Student Poster Contest during the 2014 SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Salt Lake City, UT – and, by all accounts, it was a huge success! This year, the contest more than doubled in numbers of individual entries and schools represented. A total of 30 students participated, including 23 graduates and 7 undergraduates, representing 13 US and international institutions: Colorado School of Mines, Michigan Tech, Missouri University of Science and Technology, Montana Tech, New Mexico Tech, South Dakota School of Mines, University of Kentucky, University of Utah, Virginia Tech, West Virginia University, Autonomous University of Chihuahua (Mexico), UNAL Medellin (Colombia), University of British Columbia (Canada). In addition to constructing their posters, students submitted abstracts and gave short oral presentations highlighting their research. Based on tallied scores from all three components of the contest, the judging panel selected 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners at the undergraduate and graduate levels, which were announced during the MPD Luncheon on February 26.In the undergraduate division, University of Utah’s Lucas Pich was awarded the 1st place prize for his poster “Solid-liquid mixing studies in lab-scale flotation tank using electrical resistance tomography.” His extended abstract is included in this issue of Minerals & Metallurgical Processing. Joshua Chidester, also of Utah, won 2nd place for his poster presenting “Evaluation of detectors for radiotracer RTD measurement by MCNP.” And Lucas Rojas-Mendoza, of UNAL Medellin, took 3rd place for his poster on “Preg-robbing in Colombian gold ores.”In the graduate division, 1st place went to Caelen Anderson, of the Colorado School of Mines, who also placed in this contest in 2012 and 2013! The 2nd and 3rd place prizes were awarded to Jacob McDonald and Joseph Halt, respectively, both of Michigan Tech. Extended abstracts describing the work of these up-and-coming researchers are also included in this issue.The 2014 Contest was chaired by Emily Sarver (Virginia Tech) and Lisa Schlink (Freeport-McMoran Copper and Gold, Inc.). Aaron Noble (West Virginia University), David Perkins (Derrick Corporation) and Derek Novotny (Eriez) graciously served on the judging panel this year.Special thanks are extended to all sponsors of the 2014 MPD Student Poster Contest, and to all student participants. INTRODUCTION The Columbia River Basalt beneath the Hanford Site is one of several rock types being considered by the U.S. Department of Energy for the first commercial high-level nuclear waste repository. The Basalt Waste Isolation Project (BWIP) has been carrying out a comprehensive investigation to assess the feasibility of constructing a repository in basalt and to develop technology required for repository engineering and site characterization. Development of a nuclear waste repository requires a number of design considerations not usually necessary in the planning of conventional underground structures. Principal among these is the thermally induced stress field resulting from waste emplacement. This thermal stress, super- imposed on the preexisting in situ- and excavation- induced stress fields, needs to be evaluated in the design process due to the sensitivity of waste emplacement density to this factor. The nature of this thermally induced stress field is dependent on several factors, including the temperature distribution around the repository openings, the thermal properties of the rock mass, and the deformability of the rock mass. Re1iable performance of the repository structure is largely determined by the ability to under- stand the above rock mass characteristics and predict the underground opening response to waste emplacement based on this understanding. To gain an understanding of this rock mass behavior in a repository condition, the BWIP has conducted a large-scale heated block test in basalt at the Near-Surf ace Test Facility (NSTF) on the Hanford Site. This paper presents the results from the elevated temperature phase of the block test in which the thermal, mechanical, and thermo- mechanical response of the closely jointed basalt rock mass was evaluated as a function of stress and loading orientation at varying temperatures up to 200 oC. SITE GEOLOGY The NSTF test areas, including the block test site, are located in the entablature zone of the Pomona basalt f low. The Pomona flow entablature is structurally typical of most flows in the Columbia River Basalt Group in that it is characterized by long, undulating, polygonal columns up to 2.4 m in length. Columns vary from 15 to 30 cm in diameter, averaging about 20 cm. Over their length, columns can vary in dip by 150 to 200. The column structures are dissected by subhorizontal cross joints that are generally discontinuous and seldom cross columnar joint boundaries. Spacing of the cross joints also averages about 20 cm. A representative joint pattern taken from mapping of the tunnel wall near the block test site is shown in figure 1. Application of the Rock Mass Rating System (Bieniawski, l979) to the block test site yielded an overall value of 62. The corresponding value from application of the Q-system (Barton et al., 1974) is 8.7 (Cramer and Kim,1985). The NSTF is approximately 50 m below the surf ace. However, this depth is sti1l above the water table and conditions are generally dry. Interstitial water exists as the result of percolation of meteoric water from the surface.

Turner Valley is in the foothills of the Rocky mountains, at an altitude of 4,000 feet, and is 42 miles south west of Calgary. The present producing area is 8 miles long by 1 1/2 miles wide, while drilling is being carried on over an area of 10 miles by 2 miles . There are 32 wells producing, 26 wells drilling, and 17 wells shut down, making a total of 75 wells, which range in depth from 2,160 feet to 5,900 feet, varying according toa the well location on the anticline centre wells being shallower than those located on the flank. The first indication of possible production in this field was a gas seepage on the banks of Sheep river, in what is now the Royalite plant yard (Figure 1). Geologically, this seepage proved to be located on an anticline running through the valley in a southwesterly direction. The Calgary Petroleum Products Company was formed in 1912, and under the direction of Mr. A. W. Dingman, President, and associates, the first well was drilled. Production was obtained in this well. Gas was found in several horizons from 884 feet to 3,960 feet, and oil at 1,557, 2,718 and 3,839 feet. In May, 1914, oil was struck at a depth of 3,839 feet, this being a light straw-coloured oil of 60 gravity, which was blown spraying from the well accompanied by three to four million feet of gas. The latter contained some 200 grains of hydrogen sulphide per 100 cu. ft., giving it the disagreeable odour so well known in Turner Valley gas. This strike caused considerable excitement and started the famous 1914 boom, when some 400 oil companies were formed. The well referred to produced from two to five barrels of 60 gravity oil per day, and 4,000,000 cu. ft. of gas. The oil was used in the crude form in cars and trucks.
