In this paper the test results of flotation of the kyanite ore from a Chinese mine are described. The objective of this work is to determine effective recovery process to obtain kyanite concentrate with high quality and high recovery for a new concentrator design. The valuable minerals of the ore are kyanite, garnet and magnetite, contents of them are 14.0%, 5.9% and 1.2%, respectively. The gangue minerals are mainly biotite, feldspar and quartz, contents of them are 33.8%, 17.8% and 25.6%, respectively. The kyanite in the ore contains a little iron. In laboratory flotation tests the factors affecting the flotation such as slime, alkalinity of pulp, and flowsheet configuration are studied. The interference of biotite on kyanite flotation as well as selective flotation of garnet is examined. On the basis of above-mentioned results the flowsheet of ore treatment comprising de-sliming, mica flotation, low intensity magnetic separation of magnetite, high intensity magnetic separation of garnet and coarse biotite as well as flotation of kyanite is pre-sented for comprehensive recovery of kyanite, garnet and magnetite. The kyanite concentrate con-taining more than 59% Al2O3 is obtained with a kyanite recovery of 70.0%. The contents of Fe2O3and biotite in kyanite concentrate decreased from 2.02% and 5% to 1.30% and 1%, respectively. The disadvantage of low kyanite grade in raw ore is compensated by accessory recovery of garnet and magnetite in the ore.

During the past 2 years, U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) researchers reviewed an in situ stress investigation conducted in 1977 at a test site on the 4250 level of the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID. Although the field measurements of over core strain were found to be useful, significant deficiencies were found in the stress field estimation procedure. The stress field estimate was then updated to incorporate recent progress in statistical capabilities and new understanding of stress concentration factors for doorstopper cells, as well as to correct an error in the original stress solution procedure. Simple models were used to examine the possibility that systematic variations in material properties and stress fields existed at the site. These models succeeded in reducing the sum of squared error somewhat, but fell short of completely describing stress variations throughout the test site. This overcore measurement will be supplemented by two other measurements described in the second and third reports of this series. Other observations of stress field characteristics are discussed in the fourth report The final report will also characterize the natural in situ stress field in the vicinity of the Lucky Friday Mine. This work was undertaken to support USBM research on mining method design and rock-burst control for deep mines.

Organisms living at hydrothermal vents are adapted to catastrophic disturbances in their environment caused by processes such as tectonic activity and mineralization that shift the locus of fluid flux and volcanic eruptions that pave over active systems and reset the hydrothermal cycle. The scientific community appreciates this risk of natural, local loss of species, genetic, and habitat diversity. The risks of more profound loss of diversity and ecosystem function and health as a consequence of additive commercial activities in hydrothermal systems are unknown, and are not the same across all deep-sea hydrothermal systems. Vent communities differ from one ocean basin to another, as do the geological settings and geochemical dynamics of vent systems. Communities on the East Pacific Rise represent one end-member in the catalog of hydrothermal vent communities. In these systems, the life cycle of a hydrothermal field is on approximately the same time scale as the lifespan of the species that live there. From studies of the 1991 and subsequent eruptions at 9N on the East Pacific Rise, we understand the rapidity with which new vents are colonized when nearby brood stocks are available to repopulate the system. Almost instantaneously, microbial biofilms and mats form, followed quickly by invasion of mobile opportunistic organisms (especially crabs, copepods). In a matter of a few months, a predictable succession of sessile organisms recruits, grows, and reproduces. Within two to three years, the system returns to levels of species diversity that begin to match those of the pre-eruption condition. Vents on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) represent a different end-member, with catastrophic disturbance rare relative to the life span of the organisms that make up the bulk of the biomass. We have no experience with an eruptive event or other major transformation of venting activity on the MAR and thus have no knowledge or insight regarding the time it would take for the biological diversity to return to pre-cataclysmic levels.

The Mineral Economics and Management Society (MEMS) held its fifth annual conference in Montreal, Quebec, Canada earlier this year. “The Minerals Industry: Responding to the Global Challenge” was the first MEMS conference to be held outside of the United States. About 125 mining- and minerals-related professionals attended. The MEMS program included six sessions and three distinguished speaker addresses. The session topics included: “Minerals in the Macro economy: Development in Demand,” “Trends in Global Metals Supply: The Producers’ Challenge,” “Global Environmental Issues: Policy Perspectives,” “Global Environmental Issues: Quantitative Analysis” and “Minerals in the CIS: Phoenix or Albatross?” A student session was also offered. It provided a competition for monetary awards for outstanding papers.

"Higher production demands across all bulk handling segments require increased efficiency at the lowest cost of operation, in the safest and most effective manner possible. As conveyor systems become wider, faster and longer, more energy output and more controlled throughput will be needed. Add an increasingly stringent regulatory environment and cost-conscious plant managers must closely review which new equipment and design options align with their long-term goals for the best return on investment (ROI).There are primarily two separate market segments using conveyor belts. One is in process industries such as food, chemicals, paper and powders. Handled in relatively low volumes, the bulk materials that enter these processes are generally of a consistent size and quality. The other market includes mining, coal handling and cement, where the bulk material’s quality and size vary, and the volumes are typically much greater. While both segments face similar issues with safety and environmental control, the properties of the materials handled and the volumes transferred suggest different approaches, with one thing in common: increased belt speeds requiring modern equipment upgrades.Safety at higher belt speedsWith companies recognizing that safety does indeed pay, safety is likely to become a new source of cost reduction. The percentage of mines and processing facilities with a robust safety culture are likely to increase over the next 30 years to the point where it is the norm, not the exception. In most cases, with only a marginal adjustment to the belt speed, operators quickly discover unanticipated problems in existing equipment and workplace safety. These problems are commonly indicated by the larger volume of spillage, increased dust emissions, belt misalignment and more frequent equipment wear or failures."

During the past year and a half the Western United Corporation of Aurora , Illinois , has been distributing carburetted water ges from its Lockport , Ill . , plant , to an extensive territory , under an initial pressure ranging up to 90 lb.. per sq. in . The most distant distributing point on the system is at Harvard , Ill . , about 35 miles from the plant.. The territory supplied is approximately 85 miles long and 35 miles wide , the total mileage of rains being 1223 , or approximately 24 per cent of all the gas trains in Illinois outside the city of Chicago .

"In 2015 operations under the ownership and/or management of all Newmont Mining Corporation subsidiaries (Newmont) produced 5.7 Moz of gold and 619 Mlb of copper from mining operations in five countries, with well over 100 Mt of ore processed by various grinding technologies. Processing methods used in the extraction of metals include flotation, oxidation, conventional cyanidation and heap leaching. The grinding technologies applied in milling operations feeding metal recovery processes include conventional wet grinding semi-autogenous grinding (SAG), rod and ball, dry grinding, concentrate regrinding and ultra-fine grinding, and ball milling of high pressure grinding roll product. SAG/ball (SAB) configurations represent the dominant comminution flow sheet within the company and the circuit configurations employed include SAB, SABC-A, SABC-B and single-stage (SS) SAG milling, with SAG mill feed ranging from run-of-mine (ROM) ore through to secondary crusher product. The collective experiences earned from designing, operating and debottlenecking these various comminution circuits provide many lessons that can be applied to the design and optimisation of future operations. This paper provides an overview of Newmont’s diverse comminution circuits, discusses recent performance and offers some insight into optimisation and design considerations based on recent experience in both endeavours.Citation:Giblett, A and Hart, S, 2016. "SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONSIn initial attempts to mine taconite by conventional open-pit methods, the material tended to break into tabular blocks that were too large to be handled by conventional shovel dippers and were unsatisfactory in an ordinary crusher feed. A great amount of secondary blasting was necessary, which added considerably to the cost of mining.The Bureau of Mines and others are engaged in studies designed to contribute to the solution of taconite-mining problems. These studies concern problems related to drilling techniques and patterns, types and methods of use of explosives, and other factors relative to effecting maximum fragmentation at minimum cost.This report is concerned with study of the application of shaped charges in drill holes, the effectiveness of shaped charges as compared to capped charges in secondary blasting, and the merits of different drilling patterns and methods of detonation of conventional-explosive charges.Fragmentation of taconite at or near the surface is controlled or strongly influenced by joint and bedding planes. Since all tests in this study were made in a jointed and bedded area, a definite conclusion as to the relative effect of a shaped charge in a drill hole, as compared to a conventional charge at greater depths and tighter ground, is precluded. However, application of shaped charges in primary blasting of taconite appears to be of no advantage.In secondary blasting of taconite, conventional, capped charges produced better breakage than shaped charges of the designs tested.Based on the results of conventional blasting practice in horizontal-, inclined-, and vertical-hole tests, no better fragmentation is obtained from blasting either horizontal or inclined holes, compared to vertical holes.Holes drilled in staggered parallel rows that intersect both series of joint planes at the greatest possible angle, give maximum breakage compared to rows parallel to one of the series of joint planes.Methods of detonation made little difference in breakage; but the millidelay caps produced the best conditions for moving the broken rocks."

The Bureau of Mines, as part of a program to improve mine planning and development, is currently investigating the effects of pillar load transfer, which can impact mining operations within a multiple-seam configuration. A comparative study was performed at two separate mine sites. The objective of this study was to compare two mines, each affected by this pillar load transfer mechanism, and to show how this interaction affected underground workings by the installing and monitoring underground instrumentation. At mine site A where the overburden was 1,000 ft, the innerburden thickness was less than a pillar width (40 to 45 ft), overlays of the mine layout show pillars were not superpositioned, excessive roof to floor convergence was measured, and pressure readings indicated pillar core loading only. At mine site B, the overburden was approximately 555 ft, the innerburden thickness was approximately 105 ft, overlays of the mine layout show pillars were superpositioned, minimal roof to floor convergence was measured, and pressure readings indicated a skin loading only.

Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) operations continue to grow across sub-Saharan Africa and serve as a source of livelihood to many rural communities. Owing to safety, health, environmental, and social concerns, the occupation has been regarded as a menace in several sub-Sahara African countries. Recent studies in the field of ASM prescribe formalization as a way to tame its excesses while enhancing its potential. This paper explores the concept of formalization as it relates to ASM and how it is being affected by the funding situation. The paper seeks to address the question as to whether formalization of artisanal mining operations can achieve the desired results in view of the lingering credit constraints in this mining subsector. It is recommended that, as a way of extending the scope of formalization, focus should be placed not only on access to credit in ASM but also towards optimizing the creditworthiness of ASM firms, with the goal of improving the viability of the operations.

Blue dust is a high grade soft haematite material containing 96.14% Fe2O3 transformed into magnetite (Fe3O4), when it is subjected to planetary ball milling in the presence of iron powder as reducing reagent. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and Laser particle size analyser have been employed to characterize various samples collected at various milling times to know the phase evolution, particle size distribution and morphology of particles. X-ray diffraction studies reveal the formation of magnetite phase at the optimum milling time of 40 hours. Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) study demonstrates, that sample obtained at 40 hours of milling time exhibits saturation magnetisation of 14.757 emu/g whereas the starting material used in this study shows only 1.0425 emu/g. Well-designed and maintained haul roads are the key to minimizing truck haulage onroad hazards and costs, as well as increasing productivity. In practice, however, designing and managing a haul road for optimal performance is often difficult to achieve, especially when resources assigned to design and construction are constrained. By understanding how a road design is developed from geometric, structural, functional and maintenance considerations and, critically, the interplay between these components in design and operation, optimal performance can be achieved. This paper briefly summarizes the evolution of mine haul road design, from the seminal USBM work of Kaufman and Ault in 1977, through to current geometric, structural, functional and maintenance management design components. These augmented design and management guidelines have been developed over the past decade, both in response to the requirements of mine operators for safer and more efficient haulage systems, the truck manufacturers’ requirements for a more predictable and controlled operating environment and the recognition of human factors as a significant contributor to haulage accidents. While the human factor is the most problematic to address in a road design, the paper shows that the more that is known about human error, the better a road can be designed to accommodate those actions or non-standard practices that would, on a poorly designed road, invariably escalate an error into an accident.

Material transport plays a significant role in the efficiency of horizontal grinding mills - autogenous (AG)/semi-autogenous (SAG)/ball mills. The magnitude of benefits that can be achieved with efficient material transport in AG/SAG mills has been demonstrated in a greenfield milling operation at Mirabela MineratpoÆs SantaRita Nickel operation located in north eastern Bahia in Brazil. This grinding circuit was commissioned in October 2009, was designed as a typical SABC circuit to grind 4.6 Mt/a (575 t/h) to produce a P80 of 125 ¦m with ten to 12 per cent ball charge in the SAG mill. However, it has been operating as an ABC circuit without any grinding media in SAG mill. The nameplate design capacity was achieved in few days and was gradually increased to an average of +800 t/h, still operating in ABC mode. The Santa Rita grinding circuit consists of one 30 ft + 15.4 ft 8.5 MW SAG mill fitted with Outotec patented Turbo Pulp Lifters (TPLÖ) in closed circuit with a HP400 short head pebble crusher and one 20 ft + 28.4 ft 5.5 MW Ball Mill in closed circuit with a Warman cyclone cluster fitted with 10 + 26 in CAVEX cyclones. This paper examines the comminution design process, operating philosophies, experiences, post commissioning optimisation and future development works. Presplitting is a now a universally accepted perimeter control technique in rock excavation. The success of presplitting and the smoothness and integrity of the resulting perimeter is largely dependent on the nature of joints in any given formation. Many facets of jointing have been previously investigated. The results of the effects of joints frequency and spatial positioning were presented by the authors at the ISEE annual meeting last year. This paper includes the results of further research into the mechanism of presplit blasting being carried out at the Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Center of the University of Missouri- Rolla.

In the 1940's a top blown water-cooled oxygen lance was developed to inject oxygen into liquid iron. This process, the LD or BOF process technique, today is used in 65% of the world's steel production, and represents the largest oxygen market for temperature enhancement in steel and non-ferrous smelting applications. There are three major approaches to the use of oxygen in metallurgical processes: (1) general enrichment of the air supplied to burners or tuyeres, (2) under-flame enrichment or injection, and (3) the use of an auxiliary oxy-fuel burner as a heat source. With each of these techniques there are technical and economic trade-offs.

"One of the main problems encountered in employing sublevel caving is the inherent high dilution factor. The operating results at Granduc illustrate that this dilution can be closely controlled and satisfactory recoveries achieved, in base metal ores grading less than 2.0% copper equivalent, by using an assay grade control system based on the fundamental draw characteristics. The history of draw control procedures employed since the start of operations provides an effective comparison between this system and one based mainly on tonnage. The transverse and longitudinal sublevel caving mining methods are described and it is shown how improvements in design layout, operating practice and draw control in narrow complex ore zones (12-foot minimum width) have raised the operating performance of the longitudinal system to a satisfactory level."

The Merlin project is situated 130 km south of Cloncurry in North West Queensland, Australia. It is located within the Pre-Cambrian Mt Isa Inlier and is grouped within the Eastern Fold Belt. The host rocks are metasedimentary rocks of the Proterozoic Kuridala and Staveley Formations adjacent to the Mount Dore Granite.Merlin zone represents part of the Mount Dore polymetallic deposit containing copper, zinc, silver, gold, lead, cobalt and most recently has been found to host molybdenum mineralisation. This is intimately associated with economic grades of rhenium, a naturally occurring metal that is an important component of high temperature aircraft engines. The host rock sequence is a 200 m thick zone of metasediments sandwiched between competent granite in the hanging wall and brittle quartzite in the foot wall. A distinct shear marks the contact between the granite and metasediments. The host rocks are comprised of three main rock types: black shale, phyllite and altered banded calc-silicate.Mineralisation dips to the east at approximately 45° in a package of fine grained pelites and banded calc-silicates. The top 150 m of the sequence is typified by black shale and phyllite. The lower 50 m is typified by pink banded calc-silicate. The main molybdenite zone is located at and parallel to the pelite-calc-silicate contact. Down dip, the zone splits into two or three veins hosted by the calc-silicate rock suite and haloed by thin, steep dipping, stylolitic molybdenite veinlets.The deposit was discovered in 2008 by routine infill reverse circulation sampling conducted for the Mount Dore copper deposit. One hole penetrated below the main target Cu horizon and intersected visible molybdenite. During 2009 and 2010 a 50 × 50 m diamond drill pattern delineated a total mineral resource of 6.7 Mt @ 1.3 per cent Mo, 23g/t Re, 0.3 per cent Cu (mostly Indicated Mineral Resource with minor Inferred Mineral Resource). The resource has been estimated using ordinary kriging within grade domains. Access to the deposit has commenced via a decline and production through the nearby Osborne flotation concentrator (70 km south) is expected in 2012. All facilities and resources are fully owned and operated by Ivanhoe Australia Limited, a public listed company on the Australian and Toronto stock exchanges.

HIS many admirers regard the "official"' candidate for president of the Institute in 1934 as far above the average in ability and capacity; but perhaps his outstanding characteristic is dependability. Some men of great brilliance succeed indifferently because they cannot be relied upon. When Howard Nichols Eavenson undertakes to do something he either does it, or he proves to his own satisfaction that the particular object is not attainable. And the latter outcome is exceptional because his judgment is so good that he generally foresees the impossibility and selects in advance a practical alternative. Though a tireless worker he is pretty sure that his energy is not spent futilely.
