Increased coal production, wider use of indiscriminate mining techniques, improved cleaning methods, and greater emphasis on clean fuels is increasing the rate at which wastes accumulate Over the next several years, Colorado Plateau underground coal production is predicted to increase. Currently, mine refuse is deposited in canyons or lowland areas near mines. This study presents information on the nature of coal refuse and disposal practices on the Colorado Plateau. Samples were collected and analyzed to provide information to help formulate alternative methods for reclaiming refuse piles. The analyses were based on determining the capability of unmodified refuse to provide a suitable medium for plant growth. Local topsoils which would be used in reclamation were used as standards. Potential environmental hazards were assessed also. A general cost analysis was done for both surface and underground disposal and the advantages and disadvantages of each were assessed. Several problems were identified which, if solved, would increase the effectiveness of state regulatory programs.

Hydraulic stimulation of deep reservoirs is an essential procedure for developing engineered/enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), but also in other Geo-energy contexts. The goal is enhancing permeability to such a degree that fluid flow rates within the reservoir are sufficiently high for an economically productive reservoir. Two fracture stimulation mechanisms are distinguished that may occur concurrently during the hydraulic treatment: 1) During hydro-fracturing (HF) new tensile fractures are propagated from the borehole by means of a fluid pressure overcoming the minimal principle stress d3 plus the tensile strength T0 of intact rock. In case of a pre-existing fracture oriented normal to d 3 , the fracture can be opened by exceeding d 3 only. Fluid injection is performed via small packed intervals for creating a stack of hydraulic fractures. 2) During hydro-shearing (HS), over-pressure induces slip along pre-existing fractures that are favourably oriented in the stress field for reactivation in shear. Such stimulation is usually performed in a large packed interval or in an open borehole. Which mechanism occurs predominantly during stimulation depends on the rock mass structure and in-situ stress field, but also on the orientation of discontinuities intersecting the open-hole section and thus being pressurized. Both mechanisms also differ in how they affect fracture permeability. While permeability gained by HS is mostly irreversible due to rearrangement of asperity contacts accompanied with shear dilation, permeability enhanced during HF reduces nearly reversible after pressurization unless proppant is used to ensure permanent apertures. In this contribution, we critically discuss the pros and cons of both mechanisms regarding efficiency of enhancing permeability and the associated hazard of induced earthquakes based on literature review and numerical modelling. We review literature that reports on how much permeability required for productive EGS reservoirs and how much permanent permeability can be gained by stimulation. We also compile information regarding the degree of seismicity induced during HFor HS-dominated stimulation procedures, together with conceptual studies that reveal characteristics of seismicity associated with the two mechanisms. Many observations and models indicate that HF may have a higher tendency of being aseismic, while felt seismic events are usually associated with HS. Further, we present a hydro-mechanically coupled fracture flow model that investigates, if and to what degree the stimulation strategy can be designed such that one of the two mechanisms is evoked and dominates over the other. It shows that HS may dominate in presence of larger persistent fractures nearly optimallyoriented in the stress field, even if HF is attempted in short packed intervals. The model further demonstrates that stress transfer during HS promotes the development of permeability across an anisotropic layer of the stimulated rock instead of a large volume. Hence, the study sheds light onto the feasibility of creating productive EGS reservoirs in crystalline rock at several kilometres depths.

"This paper presents the results of in-situ tests conducted on a set of under-reamed piles in a silty sand deposit. Three piles (i.e. vertical, vertical with one bulb and vertical with two bulbs) of diameter 0.2 m were cast upto a depth of 5 m. The pile cap had four foundation bolts cast into it so that a mechanical oscillatormotor assembly could be mounted centrally on it. The oscillator-motor assembly was used to generate purely sinusoidal dynamic forces, in either horizontal or vertical directions. For both horizontal and vertical vibration cases, it was observed that (i) the natural frequencies decreased with an increase in the excitation force level, (ii) for the same excitation level, the natural frequencies as well as the maximum amplitude of vibration are almost the same irrespective of the pile geometry i.e. number of bulbs in the pile, indicating that the full pile length is not being excited. For the vertical vibration case, the soil-pile stiffness at frequencies, before resonance, were observed to be higher than those at frequencies after resonance. In the horizontal vibration case, the stiffness of the soil-pile system was found to be decreasing with an increase in the excitation force level. The damping ratio was found to be increasing with an increase in the excitation force level.INTRODUCTIONUnder-reamed piles are piles, normally upto a depth of 6 m, with one or more bulbs along the pile stem. These have been used for structures like transmission towers, structures on expansive soils etc. for a very long time, however it is only in the last 30 years that dynamic response of a pile has been studied. Evaluation of dynamic soil-pile interaction is a very complex problem as the conditions and properties of soil are highly variable and unpredictable. Various models and approaches have been suggested by various investigators for evaluating the dynamic soil-pile interaction problem, but most of them are based on the assumptions that the behaviour of soil is linear and the soil surrounding the pile is strongly adhered to it. But in practice, it is not so. The soil surrounding the pile is always somewhat loosened and undergoes some deformation when a sinusoidal load is applied. This causes the soil-pile system to behave nonlinearly.In earlier studies by Novak, (1974), Novak and Aboul-Ella, (1978) etc. a linear elastic behaviour of soil was assumed. This approach was very useful in understanding the mechanism of soil-pile interaction to a large extent. Subsequently various models were suggested like the lumped mass models with nonlinear discrete springs, dashpots and friction elements Matlock et al. (1978), weak cylindrical zone around the pile model Novak and Sheta, (1980), ideal boundary zone model with non-reflective interface, Han and Sabin, (1995) etc. These approximate solutions give an idea about the mechanism of dynamic pile-soil interaction to a large extent. However, in reality both separation and slippage can occur due to the formation of a weak bond at the contact surface between the soil and the pile when a dynamic load is applied. In addition, the soil column adjacent to the pile experiences large deformations under dynamic loads and thus behaves nonlinearly.Some computer aided model studies on the dynamic response of under-reamed piles have been reported, however, very few insitu dynamic tests on under-reamed piles are reported. Dynamic tests on piles were carried out by Novak and Grigg (1976) on small scale single piles and pile groups in the field. Similar field tests on small scale piles were conducted to study the nonlinear behaviour of a single pile and a pile group under strong harmonic excitation by Han and Novak (1988), Han and Vaziri (1992), Burr et al. (1997), Manna and Baidya (2010) etc. The majority of these experimental studies were focussed on the response of the specific pile groups and compared with the results of a single pile. Ingersoll-Rand Research, T n c and the Lee-Norse Co. built a Bureau of Mines sponsored, special deep cutting continuous miner under this contract to study the effects of rotational speed and depth of cut on airborne respirable dust. After preliminary tests indicated and later verified that deep cutting - low rotational speed reduces airborne respirable dust, a series of underground tests were performed (9 combinations of rotational speed and depth of cut at 45° bit angle and 4" bit spacing). Additional data was obtained on specific energy, coal sizing and noise. The conclusions reached from the tests results were; a) deep cutting reduces airborne respirable dust generated and specific energy needed to cut coal., b) the greater majority of the decrease occurs in going from 1" to 2" depth of cut, c) lowering rotational speed has a particularly sizable effect of reducing the amount of dust at the operator's location, d) no significant relationship was found for either noise level or coal sizing to rotational speed or depth of cut. Recommendations include. a)) use of specific energy as an indicator of the change in dust level correlating to changes in cutting parameters, b) mine operators should acquire new deep cutting machines., since retrofitting would be selective.

"INTRODUCTION The veins of the Clark Fork district have been mined on a small scale since 1913. In May 1943, the district was examined by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines with a view to possible exploration for larger ore deposits that might be of value to the war effort. The area adjacent to the Hope, Whitedelf, and Lawrence mines was re-examined 4/ December 27, 1943. As a result, the Bureau of Mines started exploratory operations in the district during the summer of 1944 which was continued until the late spring of 1946. This report presents the data obtained from the investigation.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. F OR many years, only one grade of structural steel has been used in volume in Canada. Its characteristics have not been altered appreciably and its long use speaks well for its performance. This standard grade of structural steel may be bought and specified as C.S.A. G40.4 steel or the American equivalent, A.S.T.M. A7. The principal limitations and requirements of this specification are shown in Table I. Within the last five years there has been a growing awareness among the steel producers and steel fabricators that economic forces are at work which make desirable the availability of new and better grades of structural steel. Competition from other materials has increased. The use of concrete bridges and pre-stressed concrete beams is a prime example. The importance of United States coal exports as a component of the national economy, the potential for growth of these exports, and the inter-national character of this sector of the coal industry are described in this report. The report summarizes some of the many background elements in the rise of United States coals to preeminence in highly competitive world markets. It presents some insight into this important sector of United States industry and the positive contribution of this sector to the Nation's balance of payments. It contains pertinent basic statistics on production, trade, and consumption of coal in most major markets for 1960-66. The report examines the movement of United States coals from mines to export markets, tracing and describing origins, exit ports, prices, and trends as well as inland and ocean freight rates and other data vital to an under-standing of some of the practices and complexities of the United States coal markets abroad. A brief sketch of coal production and consumption in principal importing countries is also presented with a short review of some of the more current practices and problems of these countries. Coal produced in inland areas of the. United States can be moved to and distributed economically within coal-producing countries overseas and in Canada. Quality coals from the United States can successfully compete with foreign coals in nearly any area of the world on a truly economic basis because of their high grade and their low cost which derives from the high productivity of the miner and from reasonable ocean freight rates. Because of tariffs, trade embargoes, quotas, and other restrictions, how-I ever, foreign coal markets are relatively limited. Further limitations are imposed in some countries by economic conditions which restrict all imports as a matter of financial and economic necessity. Despite these obstacles, United States coals have brought lower cost quality coals to a large segment of the foreign energy market.

Recent advancements in understanding the detonation process are noteworthy, but they are still based on somewhat hypothetical situations. The actual variables that are essential parts of normal blasting practice have not yet been taken into account in such treatments. These include the various initiation practices employed to detonate a column of explosive, from single point initiation to multi-point initiation in blast holes, and the effect on detonation characteristics of both detonators and explosives under multi-deck and multi-hole blasting conditions. The in-the-hole velocity of detonation (VOD) of an industrial explosive is dependent on explosive’s charge diameter and blasthole diameter. The relationship between blasthole diameter and VOD provides a fundamental guideline to the rate of energy conversion and energy release within the detonation front on the interaction of explosives with the confining medium.The in-the-hole VOD of explosives was measured at four experimental sites in India for different blasthole diameters, ie 150 mm to 311 mm, but for identical explosive composition being same particle size, density, viscosity and loaded into blastholes with the same degree of confinement. The results of the studies demonstrated that there is definite relationship in in-the-hole VOD of the explosive and the diameter of the blast hole. The study also confirmed that the explosives initiated with concentrated boosters yielded higher VOD in comparison to those explosives that were initiated with multi-point priming. The measured increase in VOD of explosives for increasing diameter of holes was up to 24 per cent. The rate of change in in-the-hole VOD of explosives increases with increasing blasthole diameter. It can be further stated that the in-the-hole VOD of the explosive reaches a fairly constant value after reaching a limiting/threshold diameter of 311 mm.

Subsidence from underground coal mining alters surface water discharge and availability. The magnitude and areal extent of these impacts are dependent on many factors, including the amount of subsidence, topography, geology, climate, surface water - ground water interactions, and fractures in the overburden. These alterations may have positive and/or negative impacts. One of the most significant surface water impacts occurred in July 1957 near West Pittston, Pennsylvania. Subsidence in the Knox Mine under the Coxton Yards of the Lehigh Valley Railroad allowed pan of the discharge in the Susquehanna River to flow into the mine and create a crater 200 feet in diameter and 300 feet deep. Fourteen railroad gondola cars fell into the hole which was eventually filled with rock, sand, and gravel. Other surface water impacts from subsidence may include the loss of water to the ground water system, the gaining of water from the ground water system, the creation of flooded subsidence troughs, the increasing of impoundment storage capacity, the relocation of water sources (springs), and the alteration of surface drainage patterns.

In the course of time, an increasing number of investigations on jet cutting all kinds of material, such as rocks1, 2, 3, metals4, 5, and wood6 have been reported to serve various applications. This paper deals with one particular application of jets, viz deep-well drilling for hydrocarbon exploration and production. A number of papers have been published on this subject 7, 8, 9, some of which refer to jets purposely containing abrasives, termed 'jetted particle drilling'7. Since such abrasives complicate fluid handling considerably and do not appear to be absolutely necessary for making hole we have restricted ourselves to conventional drilling fluids. A large part of our investigation has been performed with the aid of three laboratory-type drilling machines, which permit tests on both micro-bits (12 in) and full-scale bits (62 - 9 5/8 in). In view of the application of jets in deep wells, care has been taken to simulate hydrostatic pressures as they exist in the field on the hole bottom. These have been found to have a major effect on the bit-penetration rate for various drilling fluids. Following experiments with single nozzles, laboratory bits have been designed, improved further and developed for field use. Field runs on 9 5/8 in bits, using conventional equipment and pumps, served to verify the feasibility of the jet drilling concept. Further efforts are evidently needed to evaluate the jet drilling method. It is encouraging that one of these10, a field test programme, is supported by a number of oil companies jointly. Such a combined effort is of paramount importance to evaluate and develop this new method of drilling to its full potential in a reasonable period of time. This paper aims to contribute to that ultimate goal.

"After almost 100 years, since the first commercial application began in Australia, flotation has shown an extraordinary growth and nearly 2 billion tons of ore per year are presently treated by flotation processes. During this time flotation has promoted a wide scope of research activities ranging from fundamental chemistry and hydrodynamic studies to studies of industrial operations. In general, fundamental studies have been mainly related to ideal situations. In recent years, however, large efforts have been focusing on achieving a better insight into the actual sub-processes provided by the development of new and more sophisticated instrumentation. Since the massive incorporation of flotation columns, around 15 years ago, a renewed interest in flotation fundamental studies, process modelling and new cell designs have been observed worldwide. The key role of the froth has been recognized as an independent and sometimes rate limiting process step. Thus, separation of pulp and froth process stages seems the most appropriate in terms of process modelling, diagnostic, design and scale-up purposes.In relation to flotation equipment development, until the middle of the 1970?s, only the sub-aeration mechanical cells were dominant. Since the 1980?s, the use of pneumatic cells and forced air mechanical cells has emerged strongly. Also, in the last decade, flotation equipment has shown a dramatic increase in size, reaching values of 200m3 in unitary mechanical cells and more than 300m3 in columns. The general feeling, however, is that, despite the great advance observed in terms of process knowledge, the mechanisms and principles of industrial flotation cells design and scale-up are still not fully understood.Advances in process instrumentation and control now in use allow for more efficient operations, both in metallurgical performance and savings in operating costs.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is a widely used process within the minerals processing industry, as well as being used for water treatment and de-inking of recycled paper. Froth flotation started in Australia at the beginning of the 20th century and since then flotation technology has made significant advances. Flotation was firstly applied to sulfide ores. The largest tonnages treated by flotation are copper and copper/molybdenum ores, handling about 50% of the total ore processed. Also significant are phosphate, iron ore and coal treatments. At present, Chile is the foremost copper producer in the world with around 35% of the world?s production. Figure 1(a) shows the evolution of copper production in Chile over the last decade. The total amount of fine copper produced in year 2001 was 4.7 million tons, from which 3.2 million tons was processed by flotation while 1.5 million tons went through LIX-SX-EW processes, which also showed significant development during the same period (Anon, 2001). The total flotation treatment of copper ores in Chile is about 325 million tons per year (Anon, 2002), so the world treatment of copper ore by flotation can be estimated at about 1 billion tons per year. Consequently a total of nearly 2 billion tons of ore per year is presently processed worldwide by flotation (Fuerstenau, 2001). In order to handle the higher tonnage of low-grade ore, a worldwide trend towards the development and use of larger flotation machines began in the 1960?s. Figure 1(b) shows that the trend became extremely marked from the beginning of the 1990?s, which is consistent with the strong increase in copper production during the same period."

Tunnel boring machines (TBM) utilize disc cutters as the primary means for excavating hard rock. Depending on rock excavatability and rock abrasivity disc cutters can exhibit significant wear. A detailed analysis has been carried out to characterize failure modes and wear patterns of disc cutters. The relationship between rock properties, op-eration of the TBM, and failure modes of cutting tools is clearly high-lighted. On that basis a prediction tool for disc cutter consumption has been developed that allows to estimate not only gross cutter life, but accounts for cutterhead design, premature cutter changes, and disc cutter repair costs.

"Expert Online is a software system that makes use of novel artificial intelligence technology, known as the Interpreting Expert System (IES), to mimic an informed expert on a minerals processing plant. Previous implementations of the IES were only capable of explaining the controller actions. Expert Online will also take on the more difficult task of explaining the complex process behaviour to the operator in simple language.The primary functions of Expert Online are to serve as a training tool and an online assistant to operators. However, it is also expected to be of value to supervisors and plant managers.A number of additional features are envisaged, including different operating modes, fault detection, speech synthesis and advanced message filtering. Expert Online will increase the operator’s knowledge of the process and his/her understanding and acceptance of the complex control systems. Users would be supplied with relevant and timeous information required to make informed decisions to ensure smooth plant operation.This paper discusses the structural design of Expert Online for implementation on the latest version of MINTEK’s open control platform, PlantStar, as well as several advances and additions since the previous implementations of the Interpreting Expert System."

A hydrogeologic characterization and impact analysis was performed for a proposed quarry at the Hitch Rack Ranch located in the Little Turkey Creek watershed southwest of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Continuous multiple channel tubing, nested piezometers, stream flow measurements, and mapping of known seeps were used to define the three-dimensional potentiometric distribution and areas of groundwater recharge and discharge. Water balance considerations, mass balance calculations, and potentiometric response to earth tides and barometric fluctuations confirmed that the granite fracture system in the ridge area of the proposed quarry has an extremely low bulk hydraulic conductivity resulting in minimal groundwater discharge to sustain the baseflow of Little Turkey Creek. The Little Turkey Creek valley forms the major conduit for groundwater flow exiting from the upper part of watershed underlain by granite. This conclusion has significant implications with respect to mine planning to minimize projected impacts to the hydrologic system and preserve this recharge component to downgradient Denver Basin sedimentary deposits.

"Most of VictoriaÆs rivers and aquifers are already fully allocated or reaching full allocation. In regions without a well-established water market, access to water entitlements to facilitate new development is limited. In areas with established water markets, mine developers face an undue cost burden in circumstances where they are only planning to consume a fraction of the water entitlements that they purchase. The challenge for water managers is to ensure protection of water resources and other water users without creating an unnecessary disincentive for those types of developments that return most of the water that they take from water sources. The opportunity for development of a mine is explicitly linked to a particular location and must be developed where a resource is located or it cannot be exploited at all. Regulatory arrangements that facilitate development may have a positive impact on economic development, particularly where water availability is a potentially limiting factor. Net volume licensing has the potential to allow increased economic outcomes through improved licensing of access to water. Net volume licensing differs from traditional water licensing in that it authorises access to water on the basis of ænet useÆ rather than æthe gross volume takenÆ. This paper asks under what conditions net volume licensing is likely to be feasible and effective. In particular, the paper examines the information and accuracy requirements to allow net volume licensing decisions to be made. This work is based around five case studies in Victoria that were used to examine the potential for net volume licensing for mines and quarries. Assessing a potential net volume licensing arrangement requires the regulating authority to have an understanding of the inputs and outputs of water to a site. In contrast, assessment of take and use licences consider only a single input. It was concluded that the conditions that lend themselves to net volume licensing include: well understood water inputs and outputs, including appropriate accuracy of information where the location of site water inputs and outputs are the same where the timing of extraction and discharge can be managed to minimise impact on the water resource.A key remaining challenge is establishing an accounting framework that allows net volume licensing under current water resource limits. "The O'Jack Mining Co.'s zinc and lead deposits in Jasper County, Missouri, have been worked intermittently since the early nineties; production from these deposits was greatest during World War I and II - 4,668 tons of zinc and lead concentrates. The deposits are in a sink-hole structure in which intense deformation has taken place and in areas of disturbance in the sheet-ground horizon.While high-grade ore was being mined, the operators sank seven churn-drill holes for the purpose of extending reserves. They then asked the Bureau of Mines to explore the deposit with the object of developing a reserve of lower-grade ore that could be mined by open-pit methods. Twenty-two holes were sunk.
