"Deep soil mixing (DSM) walls reinforced with steel soldier piles were installed for excavation support and groundwater control for the construction of a grade separation structure at the intersection of Warren Avenue and the Union Pacific Railroad in Fremont, California to mitigate traffic conditions during the busy commute hours and for the extension of San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system. Instead of treating the DSM wall as a temporary structure, the reinforced DSM walls were integrated in the design of the permanent structures including retaining walls, and the abutments and pier of the railroad and BART bridges. The integration of steel members inside the DSM wall as part of the permanent structures is an innovation which facilitates the use of top down construction techniques to speed construction and utilizes the steel soldier piles that would have been disregarded after the use as a temporary shoring wall. This paper will review the background of the project and DSM method and present the design and construction of the DSM wall composite structure for this grade separation project.INTRODUCTIONUsing the concept of mixed-in-place piles initiated in the 1950’s in the United States, Japanese contractors in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s installed single mixed-in-place soil-cement piles along a row to create a wall for excavation support and groundwater control. Due to the high groundwater conditions in most of the coastal cities in Japan, wall continuity and uniformity became the requirements of soil-cement walls for reliable groundwater control to minimize ground movement and impacts to adjacent buildings and facilities. In late 1970s, Seiko Kogyo, Co. Ltd. developed the Soil Mix Wall (SMW) method, which uses a triple auger mixing tool to improve the uniformity and continuity of soilcement wall. The SMW method is considered a wall installation method in contrast to the Cement Deep Mixing (CDM) method, also developed in Japan, for ground stabilization in soft soils, especially in the marine environment. In the U.S., generic terms like DMM (Deep Mixing Method), DSM (Deep Soil Mixing) or CDSM (Cement Deep Soil Mixing) are used by various government agencies and private organizations to describe the soil mixing technologies without differentiating the origin, procedure and application. The method used in this project is called DSM method by the project owner, Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), to produce a single continuous soil-cement wall for use as shoring wall and composite structure. The mixing tool for DSM wall installation can vary from 3 to 6 mixing augers. Due to the need to install steel soldier piles into the DSM wall for resisting lateral forces, high water cement ratio slurry with bentonite is used to produce low strength soil-cement, generally in the range of 70 to 100 psi (500 to 690 kPa), with high fluidity to facilitate the installation of steel soldier piles. To maintain the wall continuity for groundwater control, overlapping of one full DSM column is made between neighboring elements using two types of installation procedures as illustrated in Figures 1a and 1b. Steel soldier piles, as shown in Figure 2, are used to reinforce the soil-cement wall to resist the lateral shear force and bending moment induced during the excavation."

Com o objetivo de analisar o nível de aderência e a qualidade dos Indicadores Ambientais, divulgados pelas empresas dos setores: metalúrgico, siderúrgico e de mineração, que fazem parte da BM&Bovespa, foi feita uma pesquisa exploratória, qualitativa e de caráter documental, com base nos dados coletados nos Relatórios de Sustentabilidade GRI G3.1. Os Indicadores Ambientais foram analisados pelos métodos GAPIE (Grau de Aderência Plena) e GEE (Grau de Evidenciação Efetiva). Constatou-se que poucas empresas dos setores apresentam relátorios nomolde padrão internacional GRI, mesmo assim 58,33% apresentam algum tipo de evidenciação voluntária ambiental em seus web sites e 54,16% são ou já foram certificadas pelo ISSO 14001, demonstrando que a divulgação de ações de Responsabilidade Social Corporativa, ainda são tímidas nesses setores. Especificamente, os resultados obtidos através dos cálculos do GAPIE e di GEE mostram que, quando divulgados, os resultados são considerados positivos, levando-se em conta a média das empresas. Deve-se destacar que a pesquisa limita-se a análise apenas dos Indicadores Ambientais, nesse contexto os resultados dos cálculos de GEE e GAPIE não devem ser generalizados ao Relatório de Sustentabilidade como um todo.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health?s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory conducted a full-scale test of a composite polyurethane-aggregate seal in a hydrostatic chamber at the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine. This composite seal consisted of a polyurethane and limestone aggregate core that was formed between two concrete block walls. In the hydro-static chamber test, water is used to pressurize the seal. During the test, the maximum average water pressure the seal was able to withstand was 18.9 psi. Further, the seal began to yield at an average water pressure of only 17 psi. At the time of the test, the minimum seal design requirement was 20 psi under 30 CFR4 75.335 (2005). Therefore, based on this test, the seal did not meet the regulatory minimum design requirement. Uniaxial compressive tests conducted on samples from the polyurethane-aggregate core revealed that both the compressive strength and the elastic modulus of the material were much less than that for polyurethane only with a density of 10.0?12.0 lb/ft3. The significant reduction in the strength and stiffness of the polyurethane-aggregate mixture results from the formation of a soft polyurethane foam around each piece of aggregate. The formation of the soft foam seems to be caused by residual moisture from the aggregate. The moisture also caused the density of the polyurethane in the polyurethane-aggregate mixture to be less than the design requirements. The lower density of the polyurethane in the mixture, along with the formation of zones of pure polyurethane only, resulted in the overall seal density being less than the design requirements. During seal construction, steps were taken to control the moisture, but were not successful. An analysis of the seal failure showed that the calculated shear stresses at failure and the estimated shear strength of the polyurethane-aggregate mixture are fairly close. This suggests that the strength properties of the polyurethane-aggregate mixture along with a weak zone of poorly bonded aggregate controlled the maximum pressure the seal could withstand. At the time of the seal testing, the minimum design requirement was 20 psi, as specified at 30 CFR 75.335 (2005). New emergency temporary standards for seal designs were promulgated on May 22, 2007, with a minimum requirement of 50 psi under specified conditions. However, it will be shown that the evaluation of the polyurethane seal performance as designed to meet the older 20-psi criterion can be relevant to the design requirements under the new standards.

Since the beginning of this century Boliden Mineral and Atlas Copco have worked together in stages on improving the accuracy and quality of drilling. Navigation of the drill rigs with IREDES has been in use in the Boliden mines for several years. Recently the capability of the system has extended with map navigation to more accurately follow the ore in cut&fill mines. The system allows for changes on the individual round level to follow the ore without changing the whole design for the heading. Those changes are done in a CAD-system and remove the need for face markings and will allow for even better accuracy in both height and wall position. All the information between the CAD-system and the drill rigs is exchanged using the IREDES standard. This paper describes the workflow and the use of the IREDES standard.

Goldex Mine is an underground mine located near the town of Val-d’Or. Multiple innovations were required to work the mine. Due to its low grade, it was important to develop a bulk mining method to economically extract the ore. The method used is a combination between shrinkage stope and long holes stope methods. This modified method is more than adequate; however, all of the ore body must be liberated in a very short period of time. Therefore, to bring down 23.0 M tonne (25.3 M ton) of ore, large blasts up to 1.8 M tonne (2.0 M ton) are required. The situation is also complicated by the fact that the mine is located in a residential area. No less that 40 homes are built within a 1 km (0.62 mile) radius of the mine site.

There has been little change in timbering methods in anthracite mines for 75 years, and technical information on strata control is almost wholly lacking. In order to assist the industry to establish technical data, the Bureau of Mines and a Northern field operator are cooperating in underground experiments, the first phase of which has been to investigate pneumatic packing. The four principal methods of packing in mining are hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, and hand. The hydraulic pa caring system is believed to have originated at Shenanodah, Pa., in 1864,4/ to prevent destruction of a church by surface subsidence after underground coal mining. This method was used again in 1884 to arrest an underground fire at Buck Ridge colliery, near Shamokin, Pa. In 1901 hydraulic packing was introduced to Europe in Upper Silesia, where it gained in popularity owing to the availability of large quantities of sand suitable for flushing .5/ Hydraulic packing has a number of disadvantages. Chief among these are the softening effect of large quantities of water on the mine floor conducive to heaving action; drainage and punning costs; and the inability to fill roof cavities completely in flat beds.

The San Manuel district of Arizona was first prospected prior to the Civil War, but there was little or no production until 1881. Small operators tried to develop ore bodies from time to time after that without success. Then, in 1917, a drilling program was carried out; but it did not indicate a copper content of interest. Finally, in the 1940s, the U. S. Geological Survey drilled the property and obtained indications of a mineralized area. At that time, Magma Copper and its principal owner, Newrnont Mining Corporation, drilled many deep holes through the gravels and conglomerates and in 1948 proved an ore reserve of 367 million tons of 0.785% copper sulfide ore. Underground exploration and development were started in early 1948, and in 1953 design and construction of the surface facilities commenced. By the end of 1955 plant construction was completed. The ore deposit of disseminated pyrite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, molybdenite, silver, and gold is in quartz monzonite porphyry gangue. Mine production, which is entirely underground, is by full-gravity block-caving. Initially, ore mined at a rate of 36,000 tpd was hoisted through two identical shafts. From the 5,000 ton coarse ore bins located at the collar of each shaft, the ore was hauled by a shuttle service rail- road in 100-ton bottom-dump rail cars a distance of seven miles to the rail bin. Fragmentation from block-caving supplemented by underground grizzlies at the loading stations controlled the oversize material to give a feed size acceptable to the two 7 ft standard Syrnons crushers. During operation, however, it became evident that a large amount of secondary breaking in the grizzlies was necessary to produce a suitable feed for the standard crushers. The decision was then made to install primary gyratory crushers on the surface adjacent to the shaft site ore bins. Under each 5,000-ton coarse ore bin, an 8ft by 20 ft (2.44 m by 6. 1 m) apron feeder transfers the ore to a 13 ft 6 in. by 10 ft (4. 1 m by 3. 05 m) grizzly set at 6 in. (152 mm) and sloped at 45 degrees. About 65% of the ore passes the grizzly and thus bypasses the 42 in. by 65 in. (1.07 m by 1. 65 m) Allis -Chalmers gyratory equipped with a Hydroset mechanism and having an open side setting of 5 ½ in. (140 mm). Grizzly undersize and crushed ore drop onto a 6 ft by 30 ft (1. 83 m by 9. 14 m) variable- speed apron feeder for transfer to a 54 in. by 90 ft 5 in. (1.37 m by 27.6 m) inclined conveyor equipped with a tramp iron detector. Indication of tramp iron automatically stops the conveyor and both apron feeders. Providing a suitable protective water barrier pillar (PWBP) is common to reduce inundation hazards in underground coal mines. The imperative factors influencing its performance include the water head acting on the pillar, cover depth, pillar width, strength properties, and permeability characteristics. The mechanical failure of such pillar is a stress-controlled phenomenon, whereas the hydraulic failure is a strain-based phenomenon. A finite-difference numerical modeling approach was developed to study the hydro-mechanical coupled behavior of protective water barrier pillars. The mechanical stability was evaluated in terms of the percentage of failed (ZoF) and intact zones. The influence of the strain-controlled weakening on the permeability of the flow medium was studied through the coupling of the mechanical and hydraulic effects. The coupled steady-state model was used to estimate the outflow rate and its hydraulic stability. The adequacy of the protective pillar was also investigated by assessing mechanical stability and capability to resist hydraulic pressure against the maximum expected water head. A seepage rate-based classification system has also been proposed to evaluate the seepage potential and assess the hydraulic stability. The model has been validated for two case studies at the cover depth of 136–189.5 m and the existing pillar width of 16–42 m against the water head of 25–141 m.

THE Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company, Limited, is engaged in the mining and concentrating of copper ores, and, incidentally, in the mining of coal and the production of electric power. The Company has been engaged in these various operations both on the mainland of British Columbia and on Vancouver island for the past forty-five years. This paper will attempt to cover their present operations in the Similkameen mining district of southern interior British Columbia. GENERAL CHARACTER OF THE DISTRICT The Interior Plateau in southern British Columbia ranges in elevation from 3,000 feet to 6,000 feet. In the vicinity of Princet0n, a depression in the Plateau forms a well defined basin which is floored with a series of nearly flat-lying Tertiary sediments containing some workable seams of lignite. From this basin, the upland surface rises gradually t0ward the south, from an elevation of 2,000 feet at Princet0n to 4,000 feet at Copper mountain, and 6,000 feet in the upper parts of the Similkameen basin, where it merges into the rugged and diversified t0pography of the Cascade system, with glacier inhabited peaks rising to over 9,000 feet. The valleys of Similkameen river and its tributaries are wide, having flaring sides and gentle slopes, and are separated one from another by subdued rounded spurs, of which Copper mountain is typical. The drainage of this district is taken care of by Similkameen river and its larger tributaries, such as Pasayten river, and Wolfe, Friday, and Whipsaw creeks. The name Copper mountain is applied to a gently arched, nearly flat-topped spur between the deep valley of Similkameen river to the west and the shallower valley of Wolfe creek tO the east. The mountain is appro-priately named from the number of copper deposits occurring on its sides and summit, some of which have been developed int0 an important producer, known as the Copper Mountain mine.

Analytical procedures are described for the quantitative determination of 16 elements (As, Ba, Be, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, TI, and Zn) and 7 ionic species (NH4, C032-, CI-, F-, NO3-, P043-, SO42-), identification of major and minor mineral components, and measurement of physical properties associated with manganese nodules and nodule processing reject waste materials. Compound identification methods discussed include X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, selective area electron diffraction, and optical and reflected light microscopy. Methods for elemental analysis include atomic absorption spectrophotometry, inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy, neutron activation analysis, fluorescent X-ray spectrography, and ion chromatography. Thermal gravimetric analysis, ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, ion specific electrodes, and standard wet chemical procedures are briefly discussed. Physical properties determined in manganese nodule materials include grain size distribution, specific gravity, triaxial shear, permeability, maximum density, Atterberg limits, and slurry density. The results of a round-robin analysis of an ammonia process waste material and manganese nodule standards demonstrate the applicability of the discussed methods. Tests discussed for the evaluation of the waste materials for disposal options include the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) EP toxicity test, the ASTM shake extraction test, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers EPA seawater elutriant test.

This report describes the feasibility of mining the oil-shale deposits of the Piceance Creek basin in Colorado by an integrated open pit system. The study is based upon a comprehensive analysis of pertinent environmental, economic, and engineering factors. Ten mining cases are investigated, and the mine design and cost estimates for each case are presented in this report. Nine of the cases represent three cutoff grades, defining oil shale ore as equal to and above 15 gallons per ton (gpt), 20 gpt, and 25 gpt, at three ore production levels of 500,000 tons per day (TPD), 1,250,000 TPD, and 2,500,000 TPD. The tenth case is an alternate design of the 500,000 TPD production rate at the above 15 gpt cutoff grade. The report consists of Volume I, a technical and cost comparison of the ten cases; Volume II-Part I, a detailed explanation of the estimating methods used; and Volume II-Part 2, a more detailed discussion of the technical and cost features of the ten cases than is presented in Volume I.

Ingress of air into the longwall goaf environment needs to be managed appropriately to reduce the risk of creating a spontaneous combustion event. The maingate goaf edge is an area of particular concern in this respect, as air often penetrates for some distance into the goaf along this region inbye of the longwall face. Since the flow rate in this part of the goaf is also quite low, an opportunity exists to disrupt the air pathway by implementing a barrier to the airflow. Previous attempts using plugs made from an assortment of materials have resulted in varying degrees of success. More recently, Narrabri Coal Operations (NCO) has introduced the use of a chemical foam that is mixed with nitrogen to produce a standing barrier with the consistency of shaving cream. The implementation of this practice has consistently proven to be very effective for reducing the oxygen concentration along the maingate goaf edge by systematically retreating the foaming unit with the longwall. This paper presents how the foam is applied in the underground goaf environment to prevent oxygen ingress and uses results from gas monitoring to confirm the foam effectiveness.

Comingling filtered tailings and waste rock in a tailingsdominated mixture is a mine waste management strategy that has the potential to create geotechnically and geochemically stable landforms. Potentially acid-generating (PAG) waste rock can be sequestered within a filtered tailings matrix to enhance water retention and decrease hydraulic conductivity relative to a waste rock pile, potentially minimizing acid rock drainage (ARD). Enhanced water retention can reduce oxygen ingress limiting oxidation and resultant acid generation. Reduced hydraulic conductivity can slow inward percolation and outward drainage. In dry climates, the tailings matrix can hold precipitation near the ground surface accessible to evaporation and transpiration, thereby decreasing percolation. This paper presents an evaluation of comingled filtered tailings and waste rock in a tailings-dominated mixture (termed GeoWaste herein) and illustrates that ARD can be reduced under field conditions in a subtropical–highland climate.

The year 1977 generally was a year of growth in overall world mineral industry activity, although there were downturns in major elements of the world's iron and steel industries. The sharp upturns in market economy nation activities that were noted in 1976, following the reduced performance levels of 1975, were moderated, and in the centrally planned economy nations, overall mineral industry activity apparently continued to increase, but at a pace in keeping with that of 1916 rather than at the higher rates of the earlier 1976's. Noteworthy during the year, if only in a negative sense, was the inability of world powers to reach any significant agreement on issues relating to deep seabed mining. Interest from a commercial viewpoint centered around deposits or so-called manganese nodules. These materials, which indeed are chiefly manganese in terms of their content on a quantitative basis, really were of commercial interest primarily far their copper, nickel, and cobalt content. Participants at the Third United Nations Law of the Sea Conference looked into seabed mining rights, but reached no mutually agreeable decisions.

Red Dog, the world’s largest zinc mine, is located ninety miles north of the Arctic Circle in northwest Alaska on lands owned by the Inupiat Eskimo organization called NANA. NANA received a subsurface title over this resource as part of their settlement lands under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act and subsequently entered into a Lease Agreement with Cominco in 1982. Cominco, an international mining company focused on zinc, built and operated the mine. NANA’s principle objective in the development of the mine was to have it contribute to the development of sustainable communities within their traditional region. This meant creating job opportunities in a modern economy while preserving the traditional subsistence lifestyles. Preservation of their culture, language, and traditions are as important to the NANA people today as they were through ages past. The principles of sustainable development – matching economic, environmental, and social goals through continuous communications and high commitment to efficient and effective operations – have been core values for the Red Dog Mine from the beginning. This paper will describe how a large mining operation in a remote corner of the world has been able to contribute toward sustainable development in that region.

In an effort to establish a highly productive mechanized mining system for anthracite beds pitching between 10 ° and 20 ° , for which conventional mobile equipment is not adaptable , the Bureau carried out an experiment in longwall mining using an Anderton- type drum cutter loader and friction - type yielding steel roof supports . The roof- support system proved to be inadequate for breaking the overhanging roof at the break line supports , with the result that the roof broke over the solid coal . The accompanying subsidence destroyed the continuity of the roof in the work area , and the project was discontinued .

In business mining, dilution is the result of the operating parameters that occur too often and cause serious consequences to mine performance, questioning TO WHOM BENEFITS DILUTION. Mining persists in changing perception of real meaning of dilution. The lack of interrelation between mineral processes and nature compromises the understanding of dilution; this absence of interrelation occurs due to the misinterpretation of nature, otherwise, Geomimic could be helpful to filling the gap of misinformation. NATURE provides LIMITED metals in low content deposits; it is a challenge to obtain them. Nature never considers dilution. Furthermore, though dilution is a human concept, dilution is accepted and promoted. Reality of dilution is in its errors accumulation that translates into technology level or status applied in nature. It is doubtful that dilution can continue surviving if it is ?meaningless?. It will discourse: Is dilution illegal? If the change occurs in the prediction of mining will prevail a different destiny, it is important to touch the cores of the business; otherwise, it would represent repetition of the same ?negative? effects, as usual. Mining defines many losses during the disturbance of nature, from NPV elaboration to the metal recovery to commerce, demanding BETTER DESIGN. This paper introduces and applies MANAGEMENT BY LOSS, as first steps, to limit risks and uncertainties in mining. As result, the management of dilution will be obtainable under mining practices which promotes its character of SUSTAINABILITY.

This paper contained a forecast by decades, commencing 1920, of Canadian coal production, importation, consumption, and exports, based on anticipated rate of population increase, and continuation of the gradual increase in the per capita rate of coal consumption in Canada that had taken place every year up to 1920. "Convergence of roof and floor in underground mine openings is a common occurrence. This convergence not only adversely affects the ability of workers, equipment and supplies to travel through the mine, it also reduces the effectiveness of the mine ventilation system, which is essential for the dilution of methane gas and airborne respirable dust. While installing secondary standing supports to control floor and roof convergence, such supports, by nature, partially obstruct a portion of the airway. These added obstructions inhibit the ability of the ventilation system to operate as efficiently as it could by increasing the resistance in and reducing the cross-sectional area of the airway.This study introduces and demonstrates the benefits of The Eye CAN™ standing roof support, which controls floor and roof convergence and is less obstructive to air flow than conventional wooden cribs. Laboratory findings show that the normal resistance of a supported lined airway is reduced by using this new product from Burrell Mining Products, Inc., while providing the same roof support characteristics of an established product-The CAN®. Load vs. displacement curves generated from laboratory tests demonstrated that this new product behaves with the same roof support characteristics as others in The CAN product family. Ventilation data gathered from a simulated mine entry was then used for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling. The CFD analysis showed an improvement with The Eye CAN versus other accepted forms of standing roof support.This proof-of-concept study suggests that, when using this new product made by Burrell Mining Products, Inc., not only will the convergence from the roof and floor be controlled, but airway resistance will also be reduced.INTRODUCTIONOne of the basic elements of underground mining is the necessity to support the mine roof. It is well-known that easier reserves have been mined so that today's underground mines present challenging conditions. Factors influencing roof support decisions include mine depth, mining method, overburden composition, and agency regulations. Mining engineers, therefore, have to balance three objectives: safety, engineering, and cost. While safety is obviously paramount, and engineering often complements safety, the cost effectiveness of any product, method, or device warrants additional consideration in today's harsh business climate. Avenues for adaptation and improvement are found at the intersection of the three objectives."
