Coal is China's main source of energy. In 1988, 76.1% of commercial energy consumption was supplied by coal. To provide a rational utilization of its coal resources, China has paid considerable attention to coal preparation over the last 10 years. In 1980, there were only 105 washeries treating about 100 million tonnes of coal, but by 1988 there were 151 washeries treating 171 million tonnes per year. This paper describes the development of China's coal preparation industry; its growth, the equipment, and the technology. Statistics and information on the current status of the industry are also be presented.

This report describes the engineering feasibility and economic advantages of using a mobile bridge-type cross-pit belt conveyor system in conjunction with a large dragline to excavate and transport spoils in a typical Western surface coal mine. The studies show that such a system could be built to survive operational and climatic mining conditions, and that its implementation would offer a reduction in both acquisition and operating costs versus conventional mining units of comparable rapacity. Reclamation costs can also be significantly reduced, and the total reclamation process accelerated, making the cross-pit conveyor system attractive to mine Owners and environmentalists alike.

"Preliminary examination of the Khayyam mine indicated that greater reserves of copper might be found by trenching, sampling, detailed geological and topographical mapping, and diamond drilling. The deposit seemed to be a potential source of sulfur, also, for use in the manufacture of paper pulp.Formal examination of the Khayyam mine by the Bureau of Mines was a follow-up of a preliminary examination made by W.S. Wright and the author on October 19-21, 1944. John Reed and W. S. Twanhofel, of the Geological Survey, visited the property during the summer of 1943 and suggested that the prospect be examined further.Preliminary examination of the Stumble-On claim was made July 1-3, 1945, concomitant with the formal examination of the Khayyam mine 11/2 miles to the west.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of lanes has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy, It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts pre¬liminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report, The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches arc under the supervision of Dr. R, S. Dean, assistant director.Special acknowledgment is due Robert S. Sanford, acting chief, Alaska Division, Mining Branch, for his help in the preparation of this report and during the project work.The Khayyam property is situated at 550 18’ north latitude and 1320 24’ west longitude on Prince of Wales Island in Southeastern Alaska. (see fig. 1.) The mine adit is 2,350 feet above sea level, near the summit of a mountain ridge, and 2.8 miles in an airline southwest of the head of McKenzie Inlet, a southern branch of Skown Arm. Skowl arm is navigable by ocean-going vessels .to the mouth of McKenzie Inlet, where reefs and rocky islands limit the channel width to 50 yards. Beyond this point the inlet widens to nearly half a mile. Coast and Geodetic Survey chart 8142 indicates from 12 fathoms of water at this narrow neck to more than 30 fathoms throughout the remainder of McKenzie Inlet, The old ore bunker and dock at the head. of the inlet are beyond repair. A new ore bunker and dock would have to be built if a large-scale mining operation were established.The mine can be reached by trail along the western ridge that lies on the west bank of Omar Creek. The trail is approximately 4 miles in length. The grade is rather steep to an elevation of 1,500 feet, but the last 21 miles can be traveled over gentle slopes along the crest of the ridge.Ketchikan is 30 miles by air and 42 miles by water from the head of McKenzie Inlet. Feed, hardware, fuel oil, lumber, and explosives can be purchased at Ketchikan and delivered by boat to McKenzie Inlet. By using an airplane, all small equipment and camp supplies could be using an airplane, all small equipment and camp supplies could be dropped with cargo parachutes near the mine."

It has long been recognized that one of the principal ways of combating dust in coal mines is by means of water sprays. However, spray systems, currently in use, clog or plug frequently, thereby reducing the effectiveness of dust control aid, in turn, possibly increasing the health hazard to mining personnel. Moreover, the maintenance and replacement of spray system components, e.g., nozzles and filters, can be expensive in terms of direct costs of labor and material, and the consequent loss of production. Recognizing these problems, the Bureau of Mines sponsored a research project on the "Development of a Non-Clogging Water Spray System"; this project was carried out by Eastern Associated Coal Corp. The overall objective of this project was to develop a non-clogging water spray system suitable for use in underground coal mines. Since most of the dust formed is at or near the working coal face, emphasis was placed on face equipment such as a continuous mining machine. To accomplish this objective, a two-phase project was carried out. The first phase involved determining the causes of spray nozzle and spray system clogging, determining the availability of spray nozzles or systems that could be modified to be non-clogging, and developing a non-clogging water spray system. Phase two was concerned with the fabrication and the laboratory and field testing of a non-clogging system. In each phase, there were both laboratory and field investigations, and the results of these investigations are presented in this report.

Fluorite, a kind of critical non-metallic minerals, is the primary source of industrial fluorine. Sodium oleate (SO) is commonly used as the collector of fluorite ores. However, because of its some features (such as the low solubility, high solidifying point, and poor dispersion of SO) at low temperatures, it profoundly inhibits its collecting ability as well as the flotation performance. Herein, we have developed a low-temperature-resistant collector for the efficient flotation separation of fluorite from quartz. The advantages and disadvantages of the SO and sodium petroleum sulfonate (SPS) were analyzed by comparing the performance under different temperature conditions. The results of flotation tests suggest that SPS exhibited much better collecting performance than SO under low temperature. The flotation mechanism of the two collecting agents were further analyzed by contact angle measurements, zeta potential measurements, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and flotation kinetics. The results indicated that both collectors can selectively undergo electrostatic and chemical adsorption with fluorite, with no adsorption on quartz surface. The sulfonic acid group in SPS is a hydrophilic functional group, which has a relatively higher solubility in water. Therefore, the water solubility of SPS is better at low temperatures.

The Boulder batholith is a composite intrusive in which the Butte quartz monzonite is the dominant rock type. Quartz porphyry dikes intruded the quartz monzonite in directions which were subsequently followed by the eastwest- striking Anaconda system of veins, the earliest major veins in the district. Anaconda veins are faulted by northwest-striking veins of the Blue system, which are most prominent in the central third of the district. Anaconda veins are the major producers in the western third of the district and also in the eastern third, where the "horsetail" zones break off from them. Individual oreshoots are thousands of feet long as well as deep on both systems of veins, but they are generally more persistent and thicker on the Anaconda veins. Viewed broadly, the mineralization in the big veins is arranged in crudely concentric zones of zinc and manganese around a central zone of copper. Only slightly offset from these zones, but earlier structurally, is a zone in which quartz-molybdenite veinlets are prominent. This zone tops at about the 2800 level and widens downward. The pattern of distribution of Cu-Fe-S series minerals in the large veins of the copper zone is not symmetrical with respect to the metal zones. There is a fringe of chalcopyrite-bornite all around the copper front. However, within the copper zone, pyrite-chalcocite-enargitecovellite- digenite assemblages are prevalent near its eastern edge from the 3800 level to the surface, whereas deep on the large Anaconda veins in the western part of the copper zone, chalcopyrite is dominant. Here the chalcopyrite grades upward into bornite-chalcocite ores and eastward into the high-sulfur assemblages of the Leonard mine. Sericite-biotite-K-feldspar alteration envelopes, containing up to about 2 per cent copper as chalcopyrite, are present on some of the quartz-molybdenite veinlets at deep mine levels in the molybdenite zone. These envelopes contrast sharply mineralogically and chemically with the later sericitic and argillic alteration envelopes around Main Stage veins. K'0-Ar'0 ratios indicate that they may be older by about 4 m.y. Secondarily enriched copper ores are mined in the Berkeley pit in the southeastern part of the district. At the present time they account for about half of Butte's production of copper.

Approximately 20% of current world copper cathode output is produced using a hydrometallurgical process route, generally referred to as the leach–solvent extraction–electrowinning flowsheet. Since its commercialization in the late 1960s, steady improvements in the performance and efficiency of the solvent-extraction reagents and equipment, combined with significant developments in leaching and electrowinning, have made an ever-widening range of ore types amenable to this technology. Following successful implementation on all major continents, a large proportion of growth in recent years derives from the re-emergence of copper solvent extraction in the Central African Copperbelt. This review provides a brief history of the development and evolution of copper solvent extractants and mixer-settler contactors, and the significance of the Copperbelt region in achieving commercialization and acceptance of the technology. The opportunities and challenges presented by the abundant high-grade oxide ores of the Copperbelt are contrasted with the processing of solutions derived from the low-grade mixed oxide–sulfide ore bodies that are prevalent in other geological regions. The current status of hydrometallurgical copper production in the African Copperbelt, within a global context, and a medium-term outlook for the technology are discussed.

The value of mineral production increased 6.2% in 1976. With the exception of coal, practically all commodities registered an increase in production and value; most had an increase in unit value. Total value exceeded $1 billion for the first time. The increase in nearly all nonmetallic mineral production was a complete reversal of the 1975 experience. Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble and was second in bauxite and scrap mica, third in oystershell, third in kaolin, and fifth in dimension limes-tone and dimension marble. International Trade.-The international trade passing through the Mobile customs district was valued at $2,524 minion in fiscal year 1976, up 20% from that of the previous year. Of the total value of trade passing through the district, 52% of the value of experts and 89% of the value of imports were handled through the port at Mobile. The major export Commodity was coal through McDuffie Coal Terminal which amounted to nearly 2.9 million tons, up from 2.4 million tons in 1975. Incident investigation is of utmost importance in most high-risk industries. This study was undertaken to study the content of past investigation reports to determine the effectiveness of the incident investigations. The study uses a semi-quantitative method to assess the effectiveness of incident investigations in the Ghanaian mining industry by evaluating the quality of past investigation reports. The assessment tool consists of 5 elements with several indicators and rating scales for assessing the quality of an investigation report as a measure of the effectiveness of the investigation. The method was applied to 304 investigation reports of 3 Ghanaian large-scale gold mines, and the results correlated with incidence rates of the mines to determine if any relationship existed. The results showed that the mines differ significantly in the quality of their investigation reports, suggesting differences in the effectiveness of their investigations. In addition, the incidence rates of the mines negatively correlated with some elements of the assessment tool. In general, the method was found useful and revealed areas where improvement is needed. INTRODUCTION The importance of learning from incidents is well documented in the literature. For instance, some scholars regard learning from incidents as important for improving safety [1,2]. Thus, many organisations spend considerable resources in identifying lessons from incidents and subsequently on the process of improvement that follows the identification of lessons. It is therefore important for such organisations to determine the effectiveness of their learning from incidents processes, in order to identify specific areas where improvements are needed, so that interventions can be as specific as possible. The learning from incidents process models the plan-act-check-do approach of management systems, often consisting of four major stages, namely; data collection and incident analysis, planning interventions, implementing interventions and follow-ups and evaluation [3,2]. The investigating and analysis of incidents have been regarded as one of the vital stages of the learning process since it is the stage where lessons are identified [3,2,4]. It has also been noted elsewhere in the literature that results of the previous stage of the learning process are important for the next stage [3]. For example, ineffective incident analyses could result in the planning of ineffective remedial measures. One of the primary aims of incident investigations is to identify lessons from previous incidents which when implemented can prevent future recurrences or minimise the effects of future incidents. There is thus the need for organisations to assess the quality of their investigations periodically since it is one of the means they adopt to improve safety and the quality of remedial measures to some extent depends on the effectiveness of the investigations. Although previous studies [5,2] have assessed the effectiveness of the learning process, and some aspects of the learning process, such as incidents reporting, there is less focus on the effectiveness of incident investigations. The research described in this paper was therefore conducted to contribute to this gap, focusing more closely on incident investigation reports.

Flotation is one of the main concentration processes to purify kaolin clay via the removal of naturally occurring impurity minerals containing Ti and Fe. Currently, there are two types of collector chemistries used in the industry to float coloured impurity minerals. These are traditional tall oil fatty acids (TOFA) and specialty hydroxamate (AHX) based collectors. AHX based collectors have long been known to be the most selective collectors to float Ti and Fe based coloured impurity minerals (CIMs) as compared to TOFA based systems. AHX based collectors provide, not only improved selectivity and simplified process, but also more importantly, make it possible to treat certain kaolin resources that do not respond to standard TOFA systems. However, the relatively higher cost of straight AHX collectors has restricted broader application of these collectors in kaolin clay and other oxide flotation applications for a long time. Recent technological advancements, in both making and formulating AHX products more economically, increased the usage of these collectors in kaolin applications. Modified AHX products offer more economical alternatives and process options to provide high purity kaolin clay products for specialty applications based on cost-performance criteria. In this paper, the flotation performance of a series of newly developed AHX formulations is provided along with the characteristics of AHX flotation in general. In addition, flotation performance of earlier AHX collectors is provided based on published literature as background data.

"The history of mineral processing is indeed long and has always been tied to mining methods of the day. While many new processes and devices have been developed, the most significant trend in recent times has been the ever increasing scale of operations. There is serious doubt this ongoing trend is enough to match the global trend of falling grades and rising energy demands needed for mineral processing. As well we see that globally, the social licence to operate for mining (and hence mineral processing) is far from secure. Indeed, some argue that mining as we know it is dying and in the future, mining will be much more environmentally secure, even to the extent of insisting upon “in place” recovery and only bringing to the surface the valued product. In this paper we comment on the ramifications of broader uptake of more sustainable mining for mineral processing methods and address the specific question of whether recent progress in in place recovery will lead to a timely breakthrough. The answer proposed is that this is possible in the next 10 - 20 years but in the meantime, the focus is just as likely to be on removal of waste much earlier in circuits. Either way, mineral processing as we know it will change significantly. INTRODUCTION Mineral processing has a long history well covered in a recent publication (Habashi, 2006) who points out “the ancient Egyptians knew already that it would be easier to melt an earth rich in gold particles than another which is poor. As a result, all efforts were made to enrich the gold by washing away the light gangue minerals. Similarly, another ancient method for enriching gold particles from a river stream was by means of fleece, hence the Greek myth of the “golden fleece”. Since the middle ages, striving for improved economics has driven a string of innovative developments in milling and separation. The reader is again referred to the informative and illustrative text by Habashi."

The impact of seismic loading on open pit slope stability in Australia is often only considered where the slopes are located adjacent to tailings facilities or other major infrastructure. The debate regarding application of seismic loading in open pit design in Australia is usually founded on limited reporting on significant damage of open pit operations during earthquakes, the common perception that earthquakes do not occur in Australia or that they are unlikely to occur during the mine life of the mine. It is frequently overlooked that pit slopes that have withstood strong earthquakes in highly active seismic regions are often designed under strict seismic guidelines. This paper discusses the factors that impact earthquake performance of open mine slopes. These factors include topography, slope geometry, rock material and mass properties, water management and intrinsic pit design. Further, the paper presents insights into the characteristics of earthquake activity in Australia such as magnitude distribution, earthquake depths, areas prone of earthquake activity and general seismic hazard that are relevant to pit design. Guidelines are provided on the conditions and circumstances under which earthquake design in open pit mining should be considered. In addition, this paper provides recommendation on the applicable methods for assessment of the impacts of earthquake loading on pit slope stability.

This study explores implementing a machine learningbased system to generate a 3D surface repre- sentation of the roof and support straps in the mine. Event cameras have been chosen for their performance in high-dynamic-range lighting conditions and for their low latency. To enable automated drilling and bolting, 3D vision using eventbased cameras has been developed. A ground-truth set is created using two, time-synced event cameras and a LiDAR camera. These sensors are used to construct a ground-truth dataset of corresponding event- camera images and surface maps from the LiDAR. The network is tested with stereopairs of event images and produces a depth image with ±5 mm RMS error on average across 1000 test images.

The formation of nitrogen oxides, the decay of carbon monoxide, and the concentrations of residual hydrocarbons in the secondary combustion zones of propane-air and methane-air flames were studied in three enclosed burners designed to simulate gas appliances such as space and water heaters. The effect of thermally or chemically perturbing the combustion gases above these flames was determined theoretically and by means of factorial experiments. The concentrations of air pollutants and the flame temperatures were measured, and the effects of ingress of secondary air into the primary and secondary combustion zones, flame stability, burner port surface, and simulated recycling of combustion gases were noted. Based on this study, four principles were derived that, applied to gas appliance design, will insure minimal emissions of these air pollutants: 1. Oxides of nitrogen can best be kept low by depressing peak temperatures to about 3,050° F. 2. If this is not possible, then the secondary combustion zone should be cooled rapidly to this temperature. 3. Carbon monoxide concentrations can be limited by rapid induction of secondary air. 4. Hydrocarbon concentrations can be controlled by designing for well-seated, stable flames. In addition, empirical reaction rates were derived that predict the concentrations of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide in the primary and secondary combustion zones.

Pictured on these pages are the six RMCMI Scholarship Award Winners for the 1988-89 year followed by a brief profile. All winners were present as guests of the Institute at the June convention in Durango, Colorado to receive recognition at the Welcome Session Monday, June 26, 1989. Each state vice president served as the host for the collegiate winner. In addition to receiving a plaque from the Scholarship Chairman, Keith McGinnis, each winner receives $500.00 tuition credit for the coming academic year. As this is a continuing award, the winners from the previous year will receive another $500.00 for tuition credit in their senior year if they have maintained good academic standing and have been recommended by their university. Criteria for these awards to be made in the spring annually is (1) That the award be made to a sophomore student and used as tuition during the junior year. (2) That the recipient be both a U.S. citizen and a resident of the state involved. (3) That the recipient have good academic standing, be pursuing a degree in a mining related field and have an expressed interest in Western coal as a possible career path. The scholarship program includes curricula other than those in the mining departments, but in the engineering disciplines, such as geology, mineral processing and metallurgy. Contributions to this worthy project are tax deductible to each individual RMCMI member or his firm. Through annual donations of $100.00 or more, the Patrons of the Institute fund the scholarship program and the various vice presidents contribute the travel expenses to convention for these outstanding young collegiates. He is a student member of SME-AIME and has held the offices of treasurer, vice president and president. He works volunteer shifts at the University of Arizona San Xavier Mining Laboratory [ ] Johnny F. Blizzard Colorado School of Mines Golden, Colorado A high school graduate of Longmont, Colorado, Johnny carries a 3.968/4.000 at Mines, majoring in Mining Engineering with a minor in Metallurgy. His name has appeared on the Academic Dean's list for the past two years. He received the Robert M. & George R. Harris Scholarship during this past year. He is a student member of SME-AIMMP and an executive council member of CSM's chapter of AIME. "The present study deals with copper losses in slag from copper smelting. Copper slag cooling at Aurubis Bulgaria is traditionally done in pits. A new type of slag-cooling is introduced in the site, involving cooling ladles. In a previous study, the ladle cooling process was studied in detail, showing an improvement in the recovery of copper in the slag after flotation. The main reason for better recovery of copper is the increased cooling time, which allows for the accumulation and aggregation of copper droplets. The effects of the newly introduced slag cooling process are studied using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Cooling in pits and in ladles is compared, based on copper droplet size, distribution and content. Specialized image processing software is employed on images taken with an optical microscope. The results are then compared with a similar technique, available in SEM software. The availability of phase-analysing image software in combination with electron dispersive X-ray spectroscopy makes it possible to study the morphological properties, distribution and chemical composition of the copper droplets. The obtained results confirm the initial conclusions about size, distribution and composition of the copper-bearing particles. A large amount of copper particles is examined showing an obvious increase in their size from pit- to ladle cooling. The results show an increase in the average size of the droplets, which doubles from pit-cooling to ladle-cooling. There is a well-pronounced tendency of decrease of the percentage of droplets in the smallest fraction (<5 µm) in the ladle-cooled slag. In addition, the number of droplets in the larger fractions increases, compared to the ones in the pit-cooled slags. It is believed, that the developed methodology for analysis provides a relatively quick and reliable solution for comparison of the cooling rates in the slag. INTRODUCTION In the process of copper smelting and converting, iron-silicate slags are produced that contain various amounts of dissolved and entrained copper. Different physical and chemical techniques are employed for the valorisation of the remaining metals in the slag – magnetic separation, leaching, roasting, flotation, etc. According to Gorai et al (2003), about 2.2 tons of slag is produced per ton of metal. In 2016, about 20 million tons of copper have been produced globally (www.icsg.org). At an average of 0.5 percent copper content after treatment, these slags contain more than two hundred thousand tons of copper which is lost due to inefficient processing."

Spiraling costs in every segment of the open-pit mining cycle is a fact of life that every operator must reckon with. The introduction of various shock absorbing devices for rotary drilling is one recent innovation that may significantly reduce overall drilling cost, increase drill availability, and lower maintenance requirements. In a recent all-inclusive test in taconite ores, shock absorbers on Bucyrus-Erie BE 60R and Gardner¬Denver GD 120 rotary drills were directly responsible for overall savings of up to $41.06 per hour. What is It? A shock absorber is simply a device installed between the rotary drive head and drill steel that cushions the two. It functions in the same manner as springs and shocks on an automobile. Some benefits associated with use of the tool are readily apparent on a daily basis; other benefits are realized over longer time intervals and through continued use. A properly designed shock absorber will: •protect the drill from severe vi¬brations, improve rock bit performance, allow application of the best weight-on-bit and rotating speed under all drilling conditions, •function effectively over a wide range of applied bit weights, • have a spring rate soft enough to perform its primary function of absorbing both rotary and vertical vibrational forces generated by rough drilling, •be reliable and subject to as little maintenance as possible, •be easy to install and remove, and • be of such an economic benefit so as to offset the added expense of its application. A shock absorbing tool developed by BJ-Hughes Inc. was used in a recent test. The "Smoothdrill" is just one of the products currently available. This unit absorbs both rotary and vertical shock loads and has no mechanical parts so lubrication is unnecessary. A rebuild of the unit consists of removing the worn rubber element and inserting a new element, an operation taking less than one hour. Minimizing Vibrations Severe vibrations on a blasthole drill operating in broken and discontinuous formations have visible effects. These vibrations often cause structural damage when allowed to&apos; continue, resulting in fatigue cracks in the mast and related structural components in the drill. When rough running formations are encountered, drilling must be interrupted and possibly shut down. Usually, the drill operator resumes drilling using less down pressures and various rotational speeds until firmer drilling is encountered. An effective shock absorber can substantially reduce these vibrational forces so more down pressure can be applied in bad ground. It is generally accepted that longitudinal vibrations and cyclic forces are more effectively reduced if a tool is designed to incorporate a relatively "soft" shock absorber. The softness of any shock absorbing tool is best judged by its spring rate-the weight required to produce a given amount of deflection, commonly expressed in units of kg per mm or pounds per inch of deflection.
