The use of water flowing as a lower layer to reduce pressure gradients in petroleum pipelines was investigated using 17.5 deg. A.P.I. Lloydminster crude oil in a 1-inch laboratory pipe-line and a 21h-inch field pipeline. The method was found to be very effective in reducing the pressure gradient below that for the oil flowing alone. The factor by which the pres-sure gradient was reduced varied with the percentage of water added, and in general exceeded 10 for water contents ranging from 40 to 60 per cent. Within this range of water content the pressure gradient reduction factor was independent of the oil flow rate.

Chromium ore exploitation has commenced in 1948 in Albania and there are produced about 24.3 million tons up to the end of 2006. Last years the prices and need were increased notably. Main export of chromium ores and concentrates was accomplished respectively 114 500 ton and 13 000 ton in People Republic of China during 2006 year. Location, status, reserves and grade of chromium deposits of Albania are presented in the paper. Chromium ore enrichment is related with their composition and Cr2O3 content, as well as with market requests. Actually, high grade chromium ores with Cr2O3 content over 38% ~ 40% are directly exported or treated in metallurgy, but last time have been exported and chromium ores with 28% ~ 30% Cr2O3 content for the reason that dressing plants can not be operated for investment lack. High grade chromium ores have been treated in heavy media separation plant before 1990. It is presented flow sheet, figures and necessity to put in operation HMS plant in the paper. Actually, low grade chromium ores with content 16% ~ 20% Cr2O3 are not enriched for the lack of investments, but before 1990 they have been concentrated in dressing plants producing chromium concentrates grade 48% ~ 50% Cr2O3. In the paper are shown technological schemes and industrial figures during more than 20 years operation and possibilities to reconstruct these mineral processing plants. Only chromium mineral processing plant of Bulqiza is in operation using as raw material its old existing tailings. The flow sheet and figures show that are possibilities to increase recovery and grade of concentrate in the plant. Separation and concentration of slimes in suitable equipment gives visible improvement of Cr2O3 recovery. Several tests have been carried out with flotation and magnetic separation methods for enrichment of low grade chromium ores. Flow sheet and figures of mineral processing ores content olivine as gangue mineral are interesting, because combination of gravimetric with magnetic methods is necessary in this case. In the paper are presented the tests and good results of low chromium ore pre concentration. Metallurgical treatment of chromium ores to produce Ferro chrome, as well as technological process, figures, consume of electrical power and materials in Elbasani and Burreli furnaces are shown and necessary investments to treat in metallurgy all produced chromium ores in Albania are considered.

"In the preset work, the viscosity model (named modified KTH model) proposed by Sichen Du and S. Seetharaman et al and extended by Shu Qi-feng was applied to the ESR slag systems. A correlation to predict the viscosities of CaF 2-(CaO)-Al203 slags using interaction coefficients of different cations in the presence of oz-and viscosity interaction coefficients between oz-and F in the presence of different cations has been developed. The interaction coefficient between oz- and F- in the presence of Al3+ was determined from the experimental data as shown in known literatures. The good agreement between the calculated viscosities and the experimental data in the CaF2-(CaO)-Al203 systems has indicated that this approach can be successfully employed to predict the viscosities of ESR slags.IntroductionReliable viscosities data of high-temperature slag melts are important for the modeling and design of high temperature metallurgical processes. Although a number of experimental measurements have been carried out, the available viscosities data is still scarce compared to the needs of today's technology, especially in the case of complex melts. In process simulations, the needs of viscosity descriptions for complex systems which could enable the extrapolation of the data as functions of temperature and composition is strongly felt today."

"This paper discusses the aspects of tracking cutters related to the computer-aided design of shearer drums. A comprehensive computer analysis of drum dynamic parameters for multi-tracking tool arrangement is not presently available, as the current computer programs mainly consider the aspects of single tracking. Despite the fact that the single-tracking arrangement is recommended for efficient cutting, some major drum manufacturers have been seen to persistently adhere to multi-tracking, probably due to a lack of information. Further studies in this field are believed to contribute greatly to the current understanding of the computer-aided design of shearer drums.A number of laboratory simulation trials and long-term underground investigations were carried out in detail on tracking cutter arrangement, and an equation required for a computer program was derived. The results obtained from computer assessment of dynamic parameters for drums with multi-tracking arrangement were found to be in accordance with those of the underground trials, indicating the validity of the equations. The procedure adopted for the computer appraisal of the shearer drums designed with a multi-tracking concept, as described in this study, is therefore recommended to be considered in the currently employed computer programs."

This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report describes various fire-fighting resources available to the mining industry and examines the fire preparedness of four western coal mines. Information regarding fire-fighting equipment indicates that an inadequate maintenance program may cause component failure of fire extinguishers, damage to waterhoses is usually a result of improper care, and foam may be a convenient means of conveying water to the fire. Performance data relative to water nozzles (throw distance) and specific practices to improve the state of preparedness in many of these areas are discussed. Studies also indicated that a high-expansion foam plug, will travel down an entry, with a 1% rise in elevation, 207 m (680 ft) before a plywood stopping separating the generator and plug failed. The advance rate of the foam plug decreased when the entry is dry, requiring more foam concentrate and as the foam spread further down the entry. An examination of the mines showed state-of-the-art monitoring systems were common at the minesites. Fire safety was also stressed, including early detection and rapid response of the miners to evacuate the mine. However, the mines placed little emphasis on performance of water nozzles, or personal protective clothing for the underground firefighters.

Mining is a water intensive sector, contributing to declining water resource quality around the world. Improvements to current mine water management practices can help reduce the amount of water utilised by the mining sector and the impact on water resources. Creating a water account can help companies understand water use in their operations and identify areas where water reduction is possible. Water accounting methods include the Water Footprint Network method and the WaterMiner tool.The Water Footprint Network method is used to determine the amount of direct and indirect water used by an organisation either in a process or to manufacture a product. The total water footprint is divided into the blue, green and grey water footprints. Blue water is the amount of water abstracted from surface and ground water resources. Green water is the amount of rain water utilised. Grey water is the amount of freshwater required to assimilate the waste stream to the natural resource and still conform to ambient water quality standards.The WaterMiner tool is a program available via the internet, which can be used to model water use of mineral processing sites. The program reports the amount of raw, worked and treated water used by the process and recommends flows that can be added to reduce the amount of fresh water required by the process.To gain information on mine water management practices in South Africa, a water account for a platinum mine was developed using the Water Footprint Network method and WaterMiner tool. Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solutions have been serving as the basis for collaborative product definition, manufacturing, and service management in many industries. They capture and provide access to product and process information and preserve integrity of information throughout the lifecycle of a product. Efficient growth in the role of Building Information Modeling (BIM) can benefit vastly from unifying solutions to acquire, manage and make use of information and processes from various project and enterprise level systems, selectively adapting functionality from PLM systems. However, there are important differences between PLM?s target industries and the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry characteristics that require modification and tailoring of some aspects of current PLM technology. In this study we examine the fundamental PLM functionalities that create synergy with the BIM-enabled AEC industry. We propose a conceptual model for the information flow and integration between BIM and PLM systems. Finally, we explore the differences between the AEC industry and traditional scope of service for PLM solutions.

INTRODUCTION NUMEROUS examples of troubled zones, interfering with the normal development of coal seams, have been cited in the literature. From a geological point of view they can be subdivided into structural and sedimentary troubles. Of the latter type, wash-outs are usually the most bothersome. Some years ago, A. A. Thiadens and the author arrived at the conclusion that they represent fossil river-beds. A method of predicting the course of these rivers was developed, which has been successfully applied in the Netherlands coal measures, and more recently by P. Stassen in some of the Belgian coalfields and by the author in the Sydney coalfield. The Sydney coalfield has long .drawn the attention of geologists, and three main periods of systematic geological research may be distinguished. The first period, 1872-1900, is covered by the studies of Ch. Robb and H. Fletcher (32, 10-13) (1). Their detailed sections of the cliffs have lost nothing in value, and are frequently consulted today.

"The LCDs are used in televisions, calculators, mobile phones, computers (laptops and tablets), video games and other electronic devices. The advancements in technology make obsolete these devices, causing excessive disposal of LCDs and therefore decreasing life span of landfills. In this context, the LCDs from LED LCD TVs arise as an additional source of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). Thus, it is essential to develop LCDs recycling methods, beginning with the LCD characterization followed by displays processing, aiming the materials separation and using some Ore Treatment Techniques, and finally, the recovery of indium using acid leaching. The analysis methods that will be used in this work are: Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES).IntroductionLiquid Crystal Display (LCD) technology is applied in modem televisions, calculators, mobile phones, computers and a wide range of electronic devices. It has replaced Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) technology as the most advantageous display product, due to lower electrical power consumption, size and weight reduction, and no radiation emission [ 1]. The constant improving of LCD screen technology reflects on its growing contribution to the amount of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE): an estimated 50 million tons of WEEE are produced every year [2]. Once the most common method of its disposal are landfills, the LCD technology therefore became an environment issue [3].LCD structure is composed by components made by different materials. In order to develop a LCD recycling methodology that gives the right destination to these materials, a previous characterization stage is required. This characterization includes a disassembly process and material identification analysis. One of the LCD components is the screen, which is composed by polymeric and glass layers. The liquid crystal glass was the starting material of this study. It contains indium in the form of indium tin oxide (ITO) film. This ITO film is deposited in the glass by a sputtering process and acts as the electrode material [4,5]. It has in its composition 90% ofln203 and 10% ofSn02 [6]."

The fiscal year which ended June 30, 1932, although one of acute financial de ression was, nevertheless, one of distinct encouragement to those who have long struggled against the much too prevalent occurrence of accidents in coal mines, especially of coal mine fire and explosion dis- asters, both of which are now known to be readily preventable. Table 1 summarizes some important information about explosions in the United States coalies for the fiscal year which ended June 30, 1932, insofar as such information is available to the safety division of the United States Bureau of Mines, the personnel of which are under instruction to get in touch with and report on all mine explosions in their respective districts, including not only those occurrences with loss of life but also those in which for- tunately no lives, are affected. Table 1 gives data on 33 ignitions in 10 States with a total of 87 deaths for the year; the number of ignitions (33) is considerably groater than the number (26) for the previous fiscal year, and is exactly the aver- age number for the past four fiscal years; the mumber killed in the 33 ignitions (57) is materially lower than that (217) for the preceding fiscal year or the average (150) for the past four fiscal years. The States with the greatest number of deaths from explosions in the fiscal year ending June 30, 1932, were Virginia; 54; West Virginia, 11; Pennsylvania, 7 (6 being in anthracite mines); Alabama and Colorado, 4 each; Illinois and Kentucky, 3 each; and Maryland, 1. The greatest number of ignitions listod wes that for West Virginia, 7; then came Pennsylvania with 6 (2 being in anthracite mines); Alabama with 5; Colorado, Illinois, Tennessee and Virginia, 3 each; and California, Kentucky, and Maryland, 1 each. In recent times, with the global mining industry’s focus on sustainable development there has been a significant focus on mine closure and rehabilitation performance and reporting through the development of the International Council on Mining Metals (ICMM), the Global Reporting Initiative and the Equator Principles. In addition, financial reporting obligations under International Financial Reporting Standards and the Sarbanes Oxley Act (2002) have also led to better understanding and improvements with industry closure performance, liability management and reporting.Under these sustainable development principles and financial reporting obligations, mining companies are required to consider mine closure planning and associated cost estimates across all life cycle phases of the mine. Internal processes have been developed within mining companies to better understand their closure liabilities and obligations and likely costs and cost estimating processes are generally developed for long-term life-of-mine (asset) planning and budgeting, financial reporting for corporate balance sheet provisioning purposes, and regulator reporting for environmental bonding and financial assurances.These days mining companies need to plan for, prepare and actually mine for closure right from the start of a project. This means that their closure and rehabilitation liabilities throughout each stage of the mine life cycle phases must be understood, planned for, managed and controlled.So how is the industry performing? ALMOST all of the coal used for metallurgical purposes west of the Continental Divide is ruined from the Lower Sunnyside bed in Carbon County, Utah. Coke produced from Lower Sunnyside coal and used in western steel plants is weaker structurally than coke used elsewhere in this country. For this reason, western coal operators and steel manufacturers are anxious to develop new areas of coking coal of better quality than the coal produced from the Sunnyside bed. Early in the war, the Bureau of Mines undertook an intensive investigation of western coals to (a) develop additional reserves of coking coal to supplement proved reserves in the Sunnyside bed and (b) develop, if possible, reserves of coal with coking qualities superior to Lower Sunnyside coal. Results of investigations in the Kemmerer district, Wyoming,9 and in the Minnesota Creek area, Gunnison County, Colo.,10 have been published.

"Résumé - Cette étude porte sur l'altération de la matière organique et des argiles dans les boues carbonatés dévoniennes du faciès ""F"" de la Formation de Pine Point et ses équivalents stratigraphiques la Formation d'Evie et l'unité bitumineuse de la base de la Formation de Horn River. La matière organique se compose principalement de bitume solide et de quelques fragments de fossiles (organo­ clastes). La majorité des échantillons ne renferment que de l'illite et des interstratifiées illite/smectite.Si on compare les températures d'homogénéïsation (Th = l00°C) des inclusions fluides de la sphalérite et des dolomites associées à la minéralisation aux températures estimées à partir de la réflec­ tance de la collinite (84°C à ll7°C), l'on ne peut pas conclure à la présence d'une anomalie ther­ mique dans le district minier de Pine Point. De plus, la réflectance des organoclastes n'est pas plus élevée dans le district minier de Pine Point que dans les localités plus éloignées des gîtes. L'analyse des minéraux argileux conduit à la même conclusion : aucune anomalie thermique n'est décelable dans les unités échantillonnées à l'intérieur du district minier de Pine Point quelque soit l'indicateur utilisé.La kaolinite et la matière organique altérée, affichant des valeurs anomales de sa réflectance, se trouve essentiellement en présence de soufre et de sulfures. Cela suggère une origine authigène de la kaolinite et une altération de la matière organique reliées au phénomènes de minéralisation.Abstract- The alteration of organic matter and clays is studied in the Devonian Pine Point Formation carbonate muds, ""F"" facies, and its lateral equivalents the Evie Formation and the biturninous unit at the base of the Horn River Formation. The organic matter is mainly composed of solid bitumen with few fossil fragments (organoclasts). Most samples contain only illite and mixed layer illite/smectite.If we compare the Th(l00°C) from fluid inclusions of sphalerite and dolomites associated with mineralization to the temperatures calculated from the reflectanœ (Ro) of the collinite (84°C to 117°C), we cannot detect a thermal anomaly in the Pine Point mining district. This result is based on the reflectance values of organoclasts from the mining district that are not higher than those reflectance values measured on organic matter (OM) away from the ore deposit. A similar conclusion is reached from the clay study: none of the parameters used allow us to identify a thermal anomaly in the samples from the mining district.The kaolinite and the altered OM showing anomalous Ro values mainly occur with sulfides and sulfur. This association suggests an authigenic origin for the kaolinite and an alteration of the OM due to the mineralization events."

PRESIDENT SCOTT TURNER officiated as chairman of the opening session on mining methods, Monday morning, Feb. 15. The first paper was that of Max H. Barber on open-pit mining in the Lake Superior district, read by C. F. Jackson. W. L. Taylor stated that liquid-oxygen explosive had been tried but that the operators are satisfied with the explosives used; lb. of dynamite breaks one ton of rock. Although black powder is considered the most effective explosive, the factor of safety has decided in favor of high explosives. Lucien Eaton told of the Michigan Lime and Chemical Co.'s large L. 0. X. plant at Rogers City, Mich. Mr. Turner referred to this plant, also said that the Bureau of Mines is shortly to issue Bulletin 349 completely covering the use of L. 0. X. from its inception. W. D. B. Motter, Jr., gave some items concerning Chuquicamata, Chile. Twelve years ago the blasts moved 850,000 to 1,000,000 tons, but average shots now move 250,000 to 300,000 tons. One pound of L. 0. X. breaks 3.7 tons, against 3.1 tons by dynamite. Another speaker told of some large dynamite blasts in open pits, one of 360,000 Ib. in March, 1931, and another of 430,000 lb. to be shot in 1932. Tests have been made to determine the effect of large shots on the surrounding country. Mr. Taylor said that 4- and 5-yd. shovels were preferable to those of 8 yd.; their performance is better and cost is lower.

"On 9 February 2014, bushfire embers landing on exposed coal in a disused pit at the Hazelwood mine in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley ignited a coal fire that burned for 45 days. The fire was the largest and longest burning mine fire to occur in the Latrobe Valley (Hazelwood Mine Fire Board of Inquiry, 2016). Two Victorian Government Boards of Inquiry have been held into the Hazelwood mine fire. The most recent, in 2015, included consideration of the regulation and implementation of rehabilitation practice at Hazelwood and the other two brown coalmines of the Latrobe Valley (Loy Yang and Yallourn; Government Gazette, 2015).The 2015 Hazelwood Mine Fire Board of Inquiry commissioned Accent Environmental Pty Ltd (Accent) to undertake a review of the financial mechanisms for mine rehabilitation and closure adopted in Australia and overseas (Accent, 2015). Specifically, Accent was engaged to identify ‘any practical, sustainable, efficient and effective alternative mechanisms to ensure rehabilitation of the mines as required by the [Victorian] Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990’ in accordance with Terms of Reference 10 (c) (Government Gazette, 2015).The review by Accent included consideration of a range of financial instruments such as bank guarantees, trust funds and insurance. It considered a number of financial assurance systems in operation in Australia, New Zealand, the European Union, Canada and the United States. These systems included: full and discount financial assurance systems predefined liability proportion systems pooled fund systems the use of post-closure financial mechanisms such as trust funds (Accent, 2015).What lessons can be learnt from other jurisdictions? Rock mechanics models are “data-limited,” i.e., one seldom knows enough about a rock mass to use computational models unambiguously. Statistical methods, however, are capable of being applied where there are good data but a limited understanding of certain natural phenomena, such as the creep of rock salt or elevated risk domains associated with violent failure of strata commonly referred to as coal bumps and coal bursts. Important to these evaluations are (1) having statistically valid data collected consistently and (2) incorporation of analytical calculations for quantifying geologic, mining and particularly geotechnical variables. By combining the strength of the statistical and analytical models, an improved “hybrid” model is created and utilized. To demonstrate the use of hybrid statistical-analytical techniques in rock mechanics problems, three case studies are used. The first case study involves a historic examination of a nuclear waste repository in rock salt, where mathematical models are built using excavation con- vergence data to identify significant variables and estimate future deformation and stability. This case study uses the convergence rate at up to 121 locations of different ages and geometries using monitoring data over the facilities' footprint excavated through 1998. The second case study focuses on ongoing analysis of coal burst mechanics and associated factors. Within the last three decades, a hybrid statistical-analytical methodology has been applied for identifying significant factors affecting coal bursts. This final hybrid model utilizes data from 30 case studies from Utah, Colorado, Kentucky, and other Eastern U.S. mines providing predictive capability for the entire United States coal fields. The last case study is the assessment of Castlegate Sandstone escarpment stability using historic data collected over 17,000-ft of sandstone escarpment exposure in the vicinity of longwall operations in Utah. Results from all three case studies are used for demonstrating the utility of the method in solving ground control problems.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines is developing a process to selectively extract manganese from oxide ores as part of its in situ leach mining research program. The Bureau is conducting site characterization studies of two manganiferous iron-formation deposits which include: drill core, regional stratigraphic relationships from the existing geologic database, ore body geometry, geologic structure, hydrologic conditions, proximity of ore minerals to the leach fluid paths, surface subsidence potential, and data collected from laboratory leaching experiments. This information is being used to evaluate the technical, environmental, and economic feasibility of in situ leach mining of manganese for these two deposits. This paper will focus on the stratigraphy, mineralogy, ore textures, fractures, permeability, and porosity as they relate to in situ leach mining.

The competitive scenario of steel industry requires studies and developments to improve manufacturing processes focusing on increasing productivity and reducing costs. The practice of coating rolls for cold rolling with the chrome aims to increase the rolling campaign, reducing their wear by increasing the surface hardness, which guarantees a greater homogeneity in the surface of the rolled products. The present paper presents a study on the effect of the chromium coat on a forged steel rolls on the wettability of a SkinPass solution. The hardness of the coated layer and the contact angle were measured for two concentrations of solution on two types of surfaces, comparing the coated and uncoated surfaces. The results show that there is an influence of the coating on the wettability of the fluid when comparison are made with chrome coated and uncoated materials, being verified through tests in Goniometer. The productivity of the coated rolls showed higher productivity than the uncoated ones.
