It is well-known that the particle breakage mode that occurs in a semi-autogenous mill is significantly different from that which occurs in a ball mill, enough so to warrant very different lab scale breakage tests and scale-up models. This phenomenon, at the plant scale, leads to changing process constraints depending on the particular properties of the ore. For example, hard or coarse ores might bottleneck the SAG/AG mill throughput, while the ball mills might constrain throughput when milling soft or fine ores. Because the power draw of a ball mill is fairly constant compared to that of a SAG/AG mill, periods of SAG/AG mill bottlenecks lead to increased ball mill circuit specific energy consumption and a finer grinding circuit product size, which together constitute a loss of efficiency of the overall process. Because HPGR circuit throughput is less sensitive to changes in ore hardness, this situation is less common or severe in those circuits. Furthermore, the ball mills are somewhat decoupled from the upstream crushing circuits through the use of surge bins, which also helps to mitigate this effect. As a result, ore hardness variability constitutes a significant cost penalty that should be applied to SAG mill/ball mill/pebble crusher SABC circuits when evaluating the relative economics of different grinding circuit configurations. Nevertheless, the issue is by-and-large ignored, because most current HPGR trade-off studies are based on averaged ore hardness parameters. This paper provides an estimate of the magnitude of this penalty for a typical operation by using Monte Carlo simulation methods and plant data from Freeport-McMoRan?s autogenous, semi-autogenous, and HPGR-based comminution circuits. A case study from an in-house 96K t/d sulphide project is presented to illustrate the concept. It was found that by including variability effects, the trade-off NPV of the HPGR circuit over that of the SAG mill circuit increases to $84 million from negative $33 million, effectively reversing the original decision of selecting a SAG mill circuit for the fixed hardness case.

Coal and coal combustion byproducts are potential candidates for alternative resources of REEs (rare earth elements). The Illinois Basin is a major coal-producing district in the USA, but little work is available on speciation of REEs in the basin’s coals. In this study, a total number of 382 samples from known locations in the Illinois Basin coal beds were acquired, analyzed for their REE contents, and investigated for any spatial trends or chemical correlations. This study includes Springfield, Herrin, and Baker coal beds—the most heavily mined coals in the basin. An average coal ash from the basin contains 320 ppm REE, with Baker being the highest (407 ppm on average). However, the distribution of REEs in the coal beds was laterally and vertically heterogeneous. A number of trends were found in the REE variations. The most important trend was the relationships of the REE concentrations and fractionations with the distance from the syndepositional sandstones. The total REE concentrations were higher in the proximity of the sandstones, likely due to the increased deposition of detrital material. This increase was the most significant in Springfield coal (90%) and least in Baker (6%). Those coal samples from the Springfield and Herrin coal beds distal from the syndepositional sandstones had a heavy to light REE ratio (H/L ratio) of 0.40 on average, whereas in proximal locations, the ratio was dropped to an average of 0.30. This trend was not significant in the Baker coal bed. In general, higher mineral matter in the coals was associated with higher REEs. In coal preparation plants, refuse rocks can have up to 360 ppmREE. However, the ashes of the cleanest coals had higher REE levels. Such ashes also have a higher ratio of heavy to light REEs. The highest REE concentrations were found in the claystones and the shales associated with the coal beds. Since the naturally occurring calcite, quartz, and pyrite samples were depleted in REEs, an association of REEs with the clay minerals can be suggested.

This report covers the results of an industrial engineering study that assessed the safety and efficiency of underground ore handling in U.S. metal mines. Significant conclusions that will be of benefit to the entire mining industry are the following: It appears from the study that the productivity of the slushing equipment itself cannot be substantially increased using the existing technology; the unsafe situations associated with slushers can be improved by better anchoring practices, by providing better work station layout that incorporates improved clearances and protected walkways over the ore pocket, by lighting the slusher drift, and by improved operator training; improved technology needs to be applied to the movement of broken ore in the stopes; and slushers will continue to be used in the mining industry in certain spedial and unique situations outlined in the report.

Hydro-Jex® is a new enhanced method for heap leach treatment with significantly higher mineral recovery. In this case study at the Los Filos Mine in Mexico, the Hydro-Jex operation is evaluated for heap leach stability. This is pursued by numerical modeling of the heap leach pad stability and well monitoring of the phreatic surface before and after the Hydro-Jex operation. Experimental and numerical results both indicate an improvement in mineral processing under the influence of Hydro-Jex. Numerical results show an insignificant decrease and a significant increase in stability during and after Hydro-Jex injection application, respectively. The integrity of the liner is maintained in both cases. The zonal injection pressure, operationally below the overburden pressure, is found to be negligible compared with the dimensionality of the heap, and stability of the structure is not exposed to any significant risk, even up to 25%above overburden pressure. Furthermore, heap leach factor of safety increases after Hydro-Jex application. This is attributed to breakdown of the water solution build-up and thus a decrease in the phreatic surface depth below the top of the pad. It is suggested that injection wells be drilled, based on thorough geophysical data, in locations where overcompaction of heap material results in water solution build-up and pore pressure enhancement. Compared with traditional heap leaching, the Hydro-Jex technique not only expedites mineral processing by increasing chemical kinetics extraction but also increases the stability of the heap by unclogging drains.

Iran is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, being crossed by several major fault lines that cover at least 90 per cent of the country. As a result, earthquakes in Iran occur often and are destructive. So, it is important to consider the seismic stability and reliability of all structures including tailings dams.In this study, the tailings dam stability of the Sangan Iron Ore Mine in Khorasan Razavi, Iran is considered for the case study. The tailings storage facilities of the mine have three cells with the capacity of 45 million cubic metres. The first cell, which has three stages of dam raising, has been recently brought into operation. This cell has a downstream-raised retaining embankment. As the risk of seismicity in this area is high, seismic response of this dam was evaluated by numerical methods. To do this, appropriate models were developed for materials used in foundation and body of the embankment. Then for seismic stability analysis, Tabas (Iran – 1978) and Chi-Chi (Taiwan – 1999) earthquake acceleration simulations were applied.The results of this study indicated that the upstream portion of Stage 3 of the dam and dam crest did not experience significant horizontal displacements during earthquake period, but the downstream portion of Stage 3 of the dam showed a maximum horizontal displacement of 60 cm at the third stage of dam raising. This is three times more than what was estimated by the designer. Also, the maximum vertical displacement resulting from simulation of the Tabas earthquake was 35 cm. The results of dam response to Tabas and Chi-Chi earthquakes indicate that displacement, shear stress and pore pressure by the Tabas earthquake were higher than the case of Chi-Chi earthquake. The higher energy of Tabas earthquake and the higher frequency near to the natural frequency of Tabas earthquake could be the reasons of this difference. The results of this case study confirm that if the studied tailings dam impacted by an earthquake of a similar magnitude to Tabas, the dam will be seismically stable and the developed strains will not be significant.CITATION:Delavar, A, Rashidi Nejad, F and Ganjian, N, 2015. The Bureau of Mines conducted field investigations in two underground mines to determine the actual loads to which bearing plates were subjected when installed in conjunction with full-column resin-grouted bolts and the roof movements generated by the applied loads. Measured loads indicate that the bearing plate is an integral part of the support system. Vertical displacement gauges installed to monitor roof displacements in the test sites show that the highest degrees of loading occur in conjunction with the largest amounts of movement.

Once completed, the Montreal Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM) will be the fourth largest automated transportation system in the world. The REM represents construction costs of approximately 7.0 billion Canadian dollars. The project consists of 67 km of twin tracks over four branches connected to downtown Montreal. The project includes 26 stations with 3 underground stations in downtown Montreal. One of the underground stations was built using the NATM method with thin permanent shotcrete initial and final liners separated by a sprayed on waterproofing membrane. The 2 other underground stations were built with the cut and cover approach including one using permanent secant pile wall with permanent walers and struts as the support of excavation and the final perimeter wall of the station. The project also includes the rehabilitation and enlargement of the Mont Royal Tunnel. This 100-year-old double track tunnel is about 5 km long. The REM also consists of 3.6 km new TBM tunnel connecting downtown to the Montreal International Airport through saturated soft ground and karstic rock. By the time of RETC, the construction of REM underground structures will be completed. This paper presents the design and construction aspects of the underground structures of this mega project.

This report describes an experimental method for determining parameters for the rate of reaction of CO2 with solid carbon. The method involves the simulation of a flow reactor by a mathematical model based on a hypothetical multistage reactor which permits calculation of the analyses of effluent gas and carbon consumed as functions of the flow rate and duration of the reaction. The method is applied to experimental data on the reaction of coke with CO2 in fluidized-bed and fixed-bed flow reactors. A method is described whereby two parameters may be determined simultaneously. The method involves a reiterative procedure that finds the values of the parameters that minimize the sum of squares of deviation between calculated and observed analyses of the effluent gas.

Gunite was invented in 1907 by Carl Akeley to repair a crumbling facade of the Field Columbian Museum in Chicago. The method used was to blow dry material out of a hose with compressed air and inject water at the nozzle as it was released. In 1911, he was granted a patent for his invention, the ‘cement gun’; the equipment used; and ‘gunite’, the material that was produced.The advantages of using the dry mix process is that the water content can be adjusted instantaneously, allowing more effective placement in overhead and vertical applications without using accelerators. The dry mix process is useful in repair applications when it is necessary to stop frequently as the dry material is easily discharged from the hose.This paper describes the applications and principles of the gunite pump system in underground coal mining and discusses why it is the preferred spraying system for both cement and plaster products.It also addresses improving productivity and examines dust, respirable crystalline silica (RCS) and health issues around gunite pump systems. Survival of the mining industry as a viable economic entity in the United States is being seriously threatened by declining grades of ore reserves, rising operational and capital costs, and increased governmental taxes, restrictions, and subsidizing of third world competition. Discovery of major high-grade deposits is becoming increasingly unlikely. International competitiveness of the U.S. deposits will depend upon 'Yankee Ingenuity,' innovations in mining methods, metallurgical treatment, and financial arrangements, and a viable national strategy. This will require not only effective management for control of operations, but management that encourages breakthroughs in technology, financing, labor relations, and in public and governmental understanding. The mine geologist and the exploration geologist both have important roles to play in all aspects of this fight for survival of the industry.

The Buffelsfontein Gold Mining Company is situated in the Klerks-dorp district of the Province of the Transvaal in the Republic of South Africa, approximately 100 miles west of Johannesburg. Gold production commenced in January 1957 and Uranium treatment of residue slimes as a by-product started in July 1957. The mining property is 5435 mining claims in extent, the equivalent of 7,988 acres or 12.5 square miles. The mine was initially exploited by the Pioneer Twin Shaft System, consisting of a 26 feet diameter down-cast shaft and a 22 feet diameter up-cast shaft, sunk in the north-west area of the mine to cater for the hoisting and ventilation requirements for a milling rate of 150,000 tons per month.

A combined experimental / numerical approach is proposed to investigate the bulk transfer of solute due to liquid metal feeding during shape casting of aluminum alloy A356 (Al-7Si-0.3Mg). A dumbbell-shaped experimental casting geometry has been developed, which promotes solute redistribution due to liquid metal feeding. The redistribution of solute in trial castings is evaluated based on the area fraction of eutectic phases. In the numerical model, silicon species segregation during solidification are calculated assuming the Scheil approximation, and are coupled with macro-scale solute transport due to Darcy flow in the mushy zone and feeding flow. The model has been implemented within the commercial CFD software, FLUENT, which simultaneously solves the thermal, fluid flow fields and species segregation on the macro-scale. The experimental and numerical results are compared and contrasted to examine the effects of liquid metal feeding in this casting.

A popular rule in the mining industry is that a property should only be developed if average unit production cost is less than a given proportion of the estimated long-run price of the mineral. This paper provides a comparative analysis of the average cost approach (ACA) with the use of net present value (NPV) as an investment criterion. It is concluded that the ACA is an easily understood and easily applied rule of thumb which may serve as a rough first screening device, for example in the early stages of deposit exploration. Its operational convenience is at the expense of accuracy and validity, and the NPV provides a sounder method of making decisions, especially in the case of marginal deposits.
