"INTRODUCTION This report describes the work done and presents the data obtained from limited diamond drilling at the lead-zinc deposits cf the Belle Eldridge Gold Mines, Inc., in Lawrence County, S. Dak. during the summer and fall of 1943. The work was undertaken in an effort to increase reserves and step-up production of zinc and lead so vitally important to the war program.The geology, topography and existing mine workings were mapped and studied. Subsequently, six vertical core-drill holes were put down from surface sites.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our natural resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. INTRODUCTION The Harrison Western Corporation, a leading Denver based mine contracting and engineering concern, is presently engaged in sinking two 1,006 m (3,300 ft) shafts for the Phillips Uranium Corporation at their Nose Rock Project, approximately 13 miles northeast of the small community of Crownpoint in McKinley County, New Mexico. The Nose Rock Project is the first attempt by the Phillips Uranium Corporation to tap the deep uranium reserves in what has become known as the Grants Mineral Belt. (See Figure 1) Project Description Phillips Uranium Corporation's plan for the large 2700 metric ton per day (2950 tons/day) mining facility calls for a series of deep access and ventilation shafts ranging from 4.27 m (14 ft) to 5.49 m (18 ft) in diameter to approximate depths of 1,006 m (3,300 ft). The initial pair of shafts consists of one production shaft and one ventilation shaft separated by a distance of 91 m (300 ft). The interbedded layers of sedimentary sandstones and shales to be penetrated by the shafts contain several major water producing aquifers, the deepest being the mineralized zone called the Westwater Canyon Member of the Morrison Formation. A series of temporary and permanent water pumping stations is planned. Generally, the temporary stations are located above major aquifers to facilitate water removal while sinking through the aquifer and the permanent stations constitute what, in the final mode, will be the mine dewatering system. In addition, Phillips Uranium Corporation has In- stalled and is maintaining a system of depressurization wells that temporarily pump the major aquifers and considerably reduce the water inflows during shaft construction. The major aquifers are also chemically grouted prior to sinking. Site work for the project was initiated in the fall of 1976. Full scale shaft sinking commenced in November of 1977 on the 4.88 m (16 ft) diameter ventilation shaft and on the 5.49 m (18 ft) production shaft by another contractor. Harrison Western Corporation began work on the project on November 4, 1979 wlth the production shaft at a depth of 633 m (2,076 ft) and the ventilation shaft at a depth of 474 m (1,554 ft). This paper will address only the portion of shaft sinking completed by Harrison Western. Geology and Hydrology The Nose Rock Project is located on the Chaco Slope in the southern extreme of the San Juan Basin in northwest New Mexico. The southern San Juan Basin is generally bound by the Defiance Uplift to the west, the Zuni Uplift to the south and the Nacimiento Uplift to the east. The Grants Mineral Belt occupies most of the southern portion of the San Juan Basin and this project is located on the northern extreme of the Grants Mineral Belt. The San Juan Basin is comprised of sedimentary rock of continental, marginal-marine and marine origin, that dip northward from the Zuni Uplift and Chaco Slope into the interior of the San Juan Basin. (See Figure 2) Major Formations The major geologic formations to be penetrated range from mudstone and shales to siltstones and sandstones. The sandstones are highly productive aquifers which, under static conditions, would flow artesian. Water temperatures in the aquifers are high and therefore are a force to be dealt with. Temperatures range from 18ºC (65OF) in the upper aquifers to 48ºC (118º'F) in the lower. The mudstones are generally bentonitlc. (See Figure 2) GALLUP SANDSTONE: The Gallup Sandstone is the first major regressive wedge in the San Juan Basin of the Cretaceous era and at this project is about 35 m (115 ft) thick. It is medium grained and prior to depressurization carried a hydrostatic water pressure of over 72.5 kg per cm2 (1,031 psi) which 1s artesian. Compressive strength ranges from 334.7 kg per cm2 (4,760 psi) to 421.8 kg per cm2 (6,000 psi). Water temperature is approximately 30°C (86°F).

The non-equilibrium reflux reaction behavior of phosphorus was studied with synthetic slags formed by using the AR chemical reagents and changing the initial condition of basicity, FeO, MgO and Al2O3. Due to increase of viscosity, the dephosphorization slag with high basicity inhibits the full contact of slag with iron, which leads to the low reaction rate in the early stage. However, since the high basicity improves the activity coefficient of CaO, the dephosphorization rate and phosphorus capacity goes up in late reaction stage. FeO promotes the increase of reaction rate in early dephosphorization stage. But the polarization force of Fe2+ is stronger than Ca2+, which hinders the reaction between phosphate ion and CaO and reduces the stability of PO4 3-. Thus, high content of FeO will adversely impact on dephosphorization reaction. In addition, MgO has a promoting effect to the dephosphorization, whereas Al2O3 has a negative influence.

This report contains Bureau of Mines analyses of 291 samples of crude petroleum from the Gulf Coast Area of Louisiana and Texas. Included are 65 analyses from 51 Louisiana fields and 226 analyses from 216 Texas fields. Analyses from the Texas fields include 90 from 58 Upper Gulf Coast fields, 47 from 28 Middle Gulf Coast fields, and 89 from 40 Lower Gulf Coast fields. The analyses represent fields that produced 1,000 barrels or more per day during at least one of the years 19.57 through 1961, with the exception of 23 analyses from the Texas fields. The fields considered are listed by state and geographical groupings, with field names arranged alphabetically within each grouping. The tabulation also includes information concerning the geological sources of the samples. General characteristics of the crude oils and analytical and computed data determined from the analyses are summarized. Crude oil production data are given for the fields for 1960 and 1961 and are cumulative through 1961.

Boreholes are used for many purposes in mining operations, petroleum engineering, and construction works. Numerous factors affect the performance of drilling equipment. Researchers continue to work on the variable drilling parameters that can be adjusted in order to reach more efficient drilling operations. Penetration rate is an essential indicator in drillability analysis and estimating. This parameter is of great importance in mining projects. There are almost no models that can estimate the penetration rate for core drilling operations. Under the abovementioned circumstances, this paper focuses on developing models that allow estimating the penetration rate based on rock material properties. During the conduct of this study, drilling experiments under 11 different pressure forces were performed on 8 different rock units, and the equations which estimated the penetration rate depending on the physico-mechanical properties of the rock samples were derived. Experiments were carried out under different pressure forces to investigate the effect of the pressure force on the derived estimation models. The obtained results allowed deriving equations that ensured estimating the penetration rate based on the physico-mechanical properties of the rocks and the applied pressure force. Using these equations, the penetration rate in core drilling operations can be estimated.

The mining industry often embraces mine closure criteria that require the reinstatement of predisturbance or even presettlement (ie historic) ecosystems. However, the extent and severity of disturbance associated with most mining activities mean that critical physical and biological characteristics are irreversibly altered. Consequently, it is rare that a reconstructed landscape can support ecosystems even close to the historic condition, and this rarity is reflected in the small number of mine leases that have been extinguished by attainment of such completion criteria. Novel ecosystems are defined as those in which some or all physical and biotic components are irreversibly different from the historic condition. Recognition of the concept of novel ecosystems allows mine closure criteria to be set according to attainable physical and biological conditions that provide safe, stable and manageable environments with acceptable ecological functions. We propose that a landscape that first maximises physical stability and economy yet will provide a range of environments for vegetation communities and fauna habitats that may be very different from those existing prior to a disturbance should be considered suitable alternatives to, eg targeting idealised historic environments. As a result, mine closure criteria should be established by detailed description of the best attainable physical conditions, with negotiated identification and testing of the most appropriate biological systems for the various parts of the reconstructed landscape. As a general practice, revegetation would use native, but not necessarily local species if the new physical environment is not conducive to the survival and growth of local species. These new ecosystems would need to be managed in perpetuity, although the intensity of management might be low if landscape design and engineering are combined with appropriate species introductions. Here, we suggest an abbreviated procedure that may be adapted in light of local conditions and circumstances for guiding decisions influencing the physical and biological properties of reconstructed landscapes that will enable novel ecosystems to meet realistic closure criteria.CITATION:Doley, D and Audet, P, 2014. "Cyanide heap leaching of gold ores in areas with extremely low winter temperatures requires special considerations to prevent freezing of the leach solution. Factors that impact the solution temperature include ore temperature at the time of stacking and during operation, burial of drip irrigation lines, use of geomembrane covers and heating of the leach solution. Thermodynamic modeling was performed to simulate expected ore and solution temperatures under different operating strategies for Kaminak Gold’s Coffee gold project in the Yukon Territory. Mean monthly temperatures at the site ranged from a low of -22.5 °C (-8.5 °F) to a high of 13.6 °C (56.4 °F), while in situ ore temperatures ranged from -0.5° to about -1.5 °C (31 ° to 29 °F). The modeling results were used to optimize the operational parameters and indicated that a combination of drip line burial and heating of the leach solution during the winter months was required to maintain solution temperatures above freezing during the initial years of stacking, although as the size of the heap increased, heating was no longer necessary.Modeling objectivesThe successful operation of a cyanide heap leach under extremely cold winter temperatures requires the implementation of operational strategies to prevent freezing of the leach solution and the ore within the heap. High resolution seismic refraction tomography has proved to be a useful tool to effectively estimate depth of blast induced damage in a mine face. Excavation blast damage can be as shallow as 1 to 2m and requires resolution at a fraction of a meter for effective imaging. We used an accelerometer with flat frequency response to 1000Hz to record data at spacings of approximately 0.25 to 0.5m along mine walls. First arrival times from the seismic data were used to produce P-wave velocity tomograms. The tomograms show transition from low velocity zones to velocity associated with competent rock. We interpret the low velocity zones to indicate residual fracturing from blasting. Experiments on a concrete test block and at two underground mine locations give results that are consistent with fractured rock transitioning to competent rock. Our method can be applied efficiently in an underground environment to provide continuous velocity information with depth into a mine wall over a span of approximately 10m.

This mineralogical study is based on samples from typical "wet" nickel laterites of humid tropical to sub-tropical regions. An in-situ nickel laterite sample from Goro and a transported laterite sample from Plaine des Lacs, New Caledonia, are predominantly limonitic. Two-thirds of the particles in the Goro sample are <10 um in size; they consist of skeletal goethite and serpentine, as well as minor amounts of talc, gibbsite, chlorite, quartz and clay minerals. The coarser grains are mainly Cr-spinel, serpentine, gibbsite and Mn oxide. Nickel occurs mainly in goethite, serpentine and Mn oxide; cobalt occurs in goethite and Mn oxide. The Plaine des Lacs sample is finer-grained and contains more Al and CO3, but less Mg and Si than the Goro material. The sample contains more kaolinite, chlorite, siderite and feldspar, but less serpentine and gibbsite than the Goro material. Nickel is detected mainly in goethite, serpentine, Fe-Mg silicate and Fe-Mn oxide. The Indonesian ore from Sorowako, as sampled from the reduction kiln feed containing some reverts, is predominantly saprolitic, with apparent particle sizes ranging from <100 um to > 1 cm. The sample of reduction kiln feed is rich in Mg silicates, Mg-Fe silicates and goethite, and exhibits complex alteration textures. The nickel contents vary from particle to particle. Nickel is present mainly in serpentine, olivine, chlorite and amphibole, and in subordinate amounts in goethite and Mn oxide. Cobalt is detected in the Mn oxide. The processing of banded iron ore by direct anionic and reverse cationic flotation to produce pellet grade concentrate is investigated. This low-grade iron ore, known as banded hematite quartzite (BHQ) contains 41.8% Fe, 41.5% SiO2, 1.2% Al2O3, and 0.5% LOI. The flotation behavior of BHQ is studied by varying the effect of concentration of collector, frother, dispersant and pH. Oleic acid and dodecylamine are used as the anionic and cationic collectors respectively. The parameters that gave the best results in cell flotation are utilized in 100 mm diameter flotation column. All the results are compared with regard to the iron grade and recovery in concentrate. It is observed that, anionic collector with dispersant dosage of 220 g/ton, at pH ~8.5 is selective and yielded a high-grade iron concentrate with low silica as impurity. Also, it is possible to achieve an iron concentrate with 64% Fe at 30-37% weight recovery. The characterization studies of the BHQ ore using X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique and liberation analysis with QEMSCAN® are carried out. The sample contains 58.8% hematite and 37.7% quartz and the liberation of hematite particles are found to be 90.3% in -25 µm size. An alternative statistical modeling approach called response surface methodology was also undertaken to optimize the operating parameters in order to maximize the iron grade and recovery. The predicted results by the model are in agreement with the experimental values.

The petroleum industry experienced a year of satisfactory accomplishment in Oklahoma during 1945. Crude oil production was increased, a new record for recent years was established in well completions, and refinery operations were maintained at a maximum level. Daily average crude oil production increased to 382,000 bbl., reflecting a 13.5 per cent gain compared with production during the previous pear. Total wells drilled during 1945 amounted to 2556, a gain of 28.7 per cent over 1944 Refinery throughout averaged 187,500 bbl. daily, an increase of approximately 4 percent over the preceding year.

The history of the drilling of Pilot Hole "XI&apos; is presented. This historical summary provides the details of method used during the drilling of this hole. Problems encountered during drilling are discussed. The quantities of drilling mud and other materials used to drill the hole are documented.

NIOSH researchers collected basic data from two blast rounds at the SSX-Steer Mine as a component of a larger study on controlled blasting, the goal of which is to reduce injuries from falling rocks in underground mines. Drilling and blasting procedures at the mine were observed. Rock mass property data were collected, a program of seismic monitoring and analysis was conducted, and 3-D laser survey scans of the workings before and after each blast were performed. The geologic data showed that the rock mass quality was characterized as poor to very poor. It was essentially uniform within the panels examined. The recorded seismic data indicated that fill material acted as an effective damper to seismic energy. The pre- and post-blast laser scans showed both over-break and under-break conditions, highlighting the problems associated with blasting a weak rock mass. By comparing the achieved results to the intended design, potential improvements in the drilling and blasting practices can be identified. Comparison of these data with similar data from other mines will help define how various combinations of rock and fill behave during blasting. Through studies such as these, data collection procedures and analysis techniques can be refined. An ultimate goal is to develop blast procedures tied to rock mass characteristics that can minimize damage to rock in the perimeter of the opening, limiting the amount of loose rock and improving the safety of miners.

Sunnyside Mines, owned and operated by the Kaiser Steel Corporation, are situated near the city of Price, Utah. The complex comprises three adjacent mines, named simply Nos. 1, 2 and 3, all connected underground. Two seams, the upper and lower Sunnyside have been worked. These dip at about 10 percent to the north-east. The surface cover is variable due to the mountainous nature of the topography. The Sunnyside upper seam varies from 5 1/2 ft (1.7m) to 9 ft (2.7m) In thickness whilst the lower seam remains at about 6ft (1.8m). The separation between the two seams has ranged from 7 to 45 ft over the mined area (2 to 14m). Longwall mining has been practiced at Sunnyside for over 20 years due to difficulties of roof control encountered when using the roan and pillar system. Number 3 mine is bounded on the north and south sides by mines Number 1 and 2 respectively. Whilst current production is concentrated into Number 1 mine, much of the future of the complex lies in the further development of deeper reserves in Number 3 mine. Workings in this latter mine were curtailed in 1978 due to difficulties in ventilation. Present developments are ventilated partially from the neighboring Number 2 mine where no workings are in progress. The layout of Number 3 mine is illustrated on the schematic Figure 1. Trunk airways extend down dip from the surface at No. 2 Canyon and the Water Canyon for a distance of some 9,600 ft. (2930m). The area between the two sets of trunk airways has been worked extensively in both seams as have the corresponding reserves on either side in the connected adjacent mines. At the present time exhausting fans are sited at the top of a shallow shaft in No. 2 Canyon and an 8 ft (2.4m) diameter shaft sunk to a depth of 1013 ft (310m) closer to the current developments (Figure 1). The current airflow system, even with an additional 116,000 cfm (55m3/s) entering from No. 2 Mine, is adequate only for the development work now in progress but will be unable to support new longwall faces further downdip. The basic ventilation problem of this mine may be stated quite simply. In a situation where all intake and return airways pass through extensive old workings, a ventilation system design was required that would be effective, efficient and economic for the foreseeable future of the mine. ORGANIZATION OF THE PLANNING PROCEDURE The procedure followed during the study is illustrated on Figure 2. Initial ventilation surveys established the current state of the airflow system and provided the necessary data for setting up a Basic Network File in a computer store. The data in this file was a mathematical model of the ventilation system of the mine. The basic network was analysed by a ventilation network analysis program in order to correlate the measured and computed airflows and to establish the basic network as a true representation of the mine as it stood at the time of the surveys. The network model could then be extended to simulate the future development of the mine and alternative ventilation designs investigated. The remaining sections of the paper outline the work involved in each of these main phases of the planning procedure. VENTILATION SURVEYS Conduct of Surveys Two types of measurements were conducted simultaneously throughout the air-carrying routes of the mine: (i) Airflow measurements were made by anemometer traverse or smoke tube at 221 selected stations. Anemometer traverses were repeated at each station until at least three gave results to within 5 per cent. (ii) Pressure drop measurements were made across ventilation doors, regulators and, wherever possible, across stoppings. Additionally, frictional pressure drops were measured along airways where such pressure drops were significant (above 0.01 inches of water gauge or 2.5 Pa over a 100m distance). The trailing hose method was used to determine these frictional pressure drops. This involved laying out 100m of abrasive resistant plastic tubing (3 mm internal diameter) with a 4 ft. pitot-static tube facing into the airflow at either end and a low range pressure gauge connected into the line. The trailing hose method was preferred to the alternative barometer technique for this study because of (a) the relative ease of access between measuring points and (b) the greater accuracy within individual airways. The anemometers used were Davis Biram Type A/2-3" (30 to 5,000 ft/min) and Airflow Developments AM-5000 digital (50 to 5,000 ft/min). The pressure gauges employed were Dwyer magnehelic instruments. These were preferred to liquid in glass manometers because of their portability and dependability under adverse mining conditions. A checklist of the equipment used in the survey is given in Appendix 1. The instruments were calibrated before and after the surveys in the mine ventilation laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley. Computer-controlled machine sorting may, if properly applied, have a dramatic effect on overall economics of a mine operation. Radiometric and photometric sorters have been used for many years and new developments will be reported, such as a sorter for fine particles and a conductivity/magnetic sorter. Application examples with emphasis on precious metals will be given. Economics for some of the projects will be reviewed and discussed. Sorting underground is shown to be particularly attractive, but machine sorting would be profitable in most cases based on savings in transportation and milling/beneficiation costs only.

The use of nuclear fission for chemical process heat offers the special advantage of high temperature, limited only by materials of construction. The process heat may be supplied economically at elevated pressures, since no compression of combustion air is required. For the initial effort in developing a high-temperature reactor, the indirect cycle, using helium as the heat-transfer medium, was chosen. The major problems are the design of high-temperature fuel elements, construction of an exchanger to transfer heat to process streams in the range of 2,500° F., and development of compressors capable of recycling helium at 1,000° F. and above. A conceptual design of a nuclear reactor to furnish process heat for coal gasification has been made. Spherical fuel elements utilizing a graphite structure, impregnated with uranium carbide fuel, were chosen, as spheres offer the possibility of easier loading and unloading of the reactor. Calculations of pressure drop and gas-pumping power for the system are included.

ALTHOUGH the iron-carbon diagram has undergone many changes in the last 20 years, the region below the eutectoid line and up to approxi-mately 1.7 per cent carbon has been little affected. This region is generally considered to consist of cementite and ferrite. Graphite has been noted occasionally in the hypereutectoid steel region, and the ready formation of graphite nodules in malleable cast iron is a phenomenon difficult to interpret in the light of cementite, supposedly stable at sub-eutectoid temperatures. In this case the graphite formation has been partly explained by the presence of silicon, and many have believed that silicon acts to change the stable state rather than to accelerate reactions so as to arrive at the stable state in a briefer period of time. Consider-ation of this phenomenon indicates that cementite is not the stable phase in the temperature composition zone referred to. In the course of examining a low-carbon steel tube taken from a petroleum cracking still, which had been in service for approximately three years at temperatures somewhat below the eutectoid temperature, observations were made that shed light on this entire subject. The tube in question analyzed:1 C, 0.15 per cent; Mn, 0.49; Si, 0.02; S, 0.023; P, 0.015. The microstructure of the tube after service is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. From these it is evident that cementite as such is absent, and that in its place nodular graphite has been formed. In order to check this observation further, samples taken from the tube were heated at 850° C. for varying periods of time. The results of dig limit delineation in open pit mining are never truly optimized due to gaps in the underlying data, such as insufficient sampling. Aside from the data uncertainty, there is also an influence on the final dig limit by either humans or by the heuristic character of an optimization method like simulated annealing. Several dig limit optimizers have been published, which can replace the manual dig-limits designing process. However, these dig limit designs are generally not adapted to account for this heuristic character. In this paper we present a stochastic analysis tool that can be used with the results of heuristic dig-limit optimization to increase confidence in the obtained results. First, an enhanced simulated annealing algorithm for dig limit optimization is presented. Then, this algorithm is tested on ten different blasts at the Marigold mine, Nevada, USA, as a case study. Finally, the results are analysed with a destination-based ensemble probability map and an analysis conducted of the final solution data distribution. The generated dig-limit designs of the algorithm include high revenue areas that are excluded in comparable manual designs and show improved objective and revenue values. The analysis tool provides block destination probabilities and box plots with the distribution of opportunity value for the dig limit. Furthermore, with the analysis tool, it is possible to make well-informed design decisions in areas of uncertainty.

The McArthur lead-zinc-silver deposit is of the stratiform type. It consists of a mineralized bituminous shale sequence containing some tuffites, numerous graded beds and isolated slump breccia horizons. The principal sulphides; pyrite, sphalerite and galena, are essentially restricted to the shales and the genetically unrelated turbidites contain only minor mineralization. The geochemistry of the deposit has been investigated with respect to the stratigraphio column and mineralogy of the sediments.

Minerals contribute to U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels ? from mining and processing to the manufacturing of Anished products. In 2009, the estimated real GDP of the United States decreased by 2.4 percent compared with, and the estimated nominal GDP was about $14.2 trillion (Table 1). Trends in various sectors of the domestic economy are often reflected in mineral production and consumption rates. In 2009, the continued decline of the housing market was reflected in reductions in the production and consumption of cement, clays, construction sand and gravel, and crushed stone (those mineral commodities that are used almost exclusively in construction). Production of mineral commodities associated with the manufacture of goods for the housing market, such as ceramic tile, heating and air conditioning equipment, paint, plumbing and sanitaryware, roofing, wiring and wallboard also decreased.
