American and European practices in cleaning fine coal are strikingly different. The tables, launders, classifiers, and pneumatic devices used in America are seldom employed in Continental Europe, where much of the fine coal is cleaned in feldspar jigs, often supplemented by froth flotation of the extreme fines. This difference in choice of cleaning equipment may be fortuitous, but in large measure can be attributed to a difference in economic factors. Coal being more costly in Europe, there is greater emphasis on efficient cleaning of all sizes, including the extreme fines, and it is common to produce a high-ash middling for "on-site" consumption to avoid any waste of fuel value. The feldspar jig has been found advantageous under these conditions. In the United States fuel coal must be prepared as cheaply as possible, and metallurgical coal must be prepared as efficiently as possible; thus in both branches of preparation practice, any cleaning device that promises greater economy or higher efficiency warrants consideration. The feldspar jig, as employed in Europe, has a much higher unit capacity than the wet table used so extensively here and therefore offers economy in the capital costs of a washery through saving in space. As pointed out by Vissac,4/ the jig operates under automatic control, and therefore can cope with fluctuations in quality of feed. Maintenance costs for a single, large-capacity unit, such as the feldspar jig, would be expected to be lower than those for a battery of low-capacity cleaners. These considerations led the Bureau of Mines to undertake an investigation of the feldspar jig to determine its possible usefulness in this country.

"Magotteaux and Anglo Platinum started a co-operation program with the main aim of establishing the optimum milling configuration measured in terms of throughput, fineness and energy consumption.For this purpose, a fully instrumented pilot milling plant, supplied by Magotteaux (Pty) Ltd, and equipped with a 0.9 x 1.0 m ball mill, was erected at Frank concentrator (Merensky Pt ore). The primary ball mills at Frank concentrator were surveyed in order to set the conditions for the base case. This data was then replicated in the pilot mill under the same configuration. Thereafter, a series of different parameters were varied in order to attempt to optimize the milling system.Some of the grinding parameters that have been studied are:•,Gate versus overflow discharge•,Open versus closed circuit•,Different filling degrees•,Different shell liner profilesOnly grate versus overflow discharge and open versus closed circuit will be discussed in this paper.It should be noted that this paper does not attempt to give a universal solution as to what milling configuration is optimum in all cases. The conclusions apply for this particular case and probably most others, but it would be advisable to consider each case on its own."

In March 2003, Phelps Dodge started up an innovative pressure leach facility for processing copper concentrates at the Bagdad mine in Arizona. This paper describes the development of the concentrate leaching plant at Bagdad and the operational results from start up to present. Optimization efforts and an approach to mineralogical modeling of the concentrate to calculate oxygen utilization are also presented.

Change and its relationship with the introduction of new technology is a constant of human history. The mining industry has many examples of this relationship. This record contrasts with its present day struggles to move beyond a public perception of being just ‘dirty, dumb and dangerous’. The drivers for the introduction of new technology are frequently listed as the occupational health and safety of people working in the mines, reductions in direct operating costs, and increases in productivity.This paper discusses the issues that a mining business needs to deal with to implement new technology with the best possible conditions for success. It comments on how the strategic and tactical components of technology planning relate to and interact with change management. The central discussion is directed at the role that people play in the successful implementation of new technology. The introduction of autonomous underground haulage equipment provides a background for the discussion of this topic.The paper uses case study references, equipment supplier information and research findings. "Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing Project (Eurasia Tunnel) includes 3.34 km of a bored double-deck tunnel under the Bosphorus Strait, at a maximum depth of 106 m from the sea level, and 1 km of twin NATM tunnels on the Asian side. The region’s variable geology, hydrology and propensity for seismic activity, combined with high water pressure and large-diameter/double-deck tunnel configuration, make the Eurasia Tunnel one of today’s most challenging and complex projects under construction. Due to the site’s proximity to the active North Anatolian Fault, the tunnel is designed to withstand a 7.5 magnitude earthquake. The tunnel penetrates through both the Trakya bedrock (on both European and Asian sides) and the alluvial sediments at the bottom of the channel. The tunnel is designed to accommodate differential displacements by introducing seismic/flexible joints at proper locations at the transition zones between rock and soft soils. Tunnel fire is also a significant design consideration for undersea tunnel due to that the rubber protecting it in close proximity of the seismic joint should resist a fire for long term safety and durability. This paper mainly focuses on the design for method of tunnel response analysis in transverse and longitudinal direction against seismic demands relating with the seismic joints. INTRODUCTION Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing Project (Eurasia Tunnel) will build and operate a roadway tunnel under the Borphorus connecting Kazlicesme on the European side and Goztepe on the Asian side, to provide additional road-access across the Strait and consist of three main parts as shown in Figure 1."

This study investigates upgrading of low-grade banded hematite quartzite iron ore (Fe ~31%). Conventional beneficiation was found to be futile. The susceptibility of iron phases to microwave exposure and their selective absorption assists in the liberation of iron values. Microwave exposure of coarse particles at 540 W for 10 min yielded a concentrate with Fe 56.30% and recovery of 50.68%. Conventional carbothermic reduction at 500 °C, 60 min and 9% charcoal yielded a concentrate with Fe 57.6% and iron recovery of 68%. The presence of sufficiently bonded silica leads to an easy formation of a fayalite phase. The microwave reduction design yielded FeG of 57.6%, FeR of 47% and a yield of 24% at an optimal condition of 540 W, 8 min and 6% charcoal. It was found that a small fraction of microwave-irradiated ore-charcoal mixture melted rapidly, and pure ferrite balls were observed within 8 min. An optical micrograph of a ferrite ball reveals the retained austenite and martensite phase.

In Romania, there are significant lignite and brown coal reserves hosted by different regions of the country. The most important lignite bearing zone of the country situated in the North ? West part of Oltenia region and which covers a surface area of 2,500 km2 and host a total reserve of 3.0 billion tons of lignite, of which more than 95% can be exploited by open cast method. The paper deals with the existing geological and mining conditions of the zone , the distribution by mining basins and exploitation perimeters, the open cast working technologies and the economic outcomes obtained throughout the time. Years ago, for the improvement of the economic situation as a whole and in each unit, a large production reorganization, technology update and modernization process was started up. There are described the rehabilitation measures of the technological lines and modernization of the equipments of the production flow-sheet, measures developed at present, too and which will still continue in future. There are mentioned the equipments considered, the components under modernization and the economic outcomes obtained so far. At the end of the paper there are presented the future actions for the equipment modernization and perspectives of the lignite deposit exploitation to meet the national economy requirements of solid fuels.

"In pre-design a flotation plant copper sulphide is useful to apply a simplified methodology of economic analysis that relates the size of the grinding product (P80) with the throughput and their effect on copper grade and recovery of copper in the final concentrate of a flotation circuit. With this objective, this methodology covers the following analysis, perform by evaluation of five sizes grinding products (P80): 120, 150, 180, 210 and 240 microns. • Flotation testwork (rougher kinetic, open and closed cycle test) has been done to determinate the optimum operating conditions and to estimate the maximum recovery of copper in the concentrate, using Klimpell model • Flotation plant design assumes a conminution product obtained from a 25,000 HP ball mill • Metallurgical balance is performed for the circuit based on flotation testwork • Economic evaluation by calculating capital expenditure (CAPEX), operating expenditure (OPEX) and sales revenue, to determine NPV is performed and relates to the NPV. An optimum grind size is then obtained based on cash flow. The results shows a grinding product size that optimizes flotation and allows a higher NPV and INPV over other alternatives."

Shaft lining reinforcing analysis of two shafts under construction has been presented in this study. The first shaft was driven from the surface, while the second was deepened. Mining and geological conditions have been studied with respect to the lining capacity. The improvement of shaft stability comprised two elements, i.e. reinforcement of the shaft lining capacity and improvement of the strength properties of the rock mass. In both tested cases, the particular hazard was connected with non uniform loadings of the lining, which could generate shearing stresses within lining structure. Thus such elements as armored concrete with high strength properties, bolting and injection sealing of the rock mass, and the use of special ring reinforcing the shaft lining have been used in order to reinforce the shaft-rock mass system. Practical conclusions related with new technological solutions, allowing the rock mass and shaft lining reinforcement, have been included for the present study. The Bureau of Mines developed three types of passive water barriers for suppressing slow-moving coal dust explosions. One type is a modification of a conventional tub barrier and depends on the dynamic pressure generated ahead of an explosion to tilt the tub to release its water and suppress the explosion. The other two barriers operate in response to an increase in static pressure developed ahead of the explosion. Tests indicate the first barrier begins to release its water at air speeds as low as 50 ft/sec, and the second and third barriers will operate at a rise in static pressure as little as 0.5 psi. All three barriers were found to be effective in suppressing coal dust explosions propagating at speeds as low as 100 ft/sec. A plan is described for installing a water barrier in a working mine on a trial basis.

"The effect of an external electric field E=5(+) kV/cm applied during the solution heat treatment at 500°-550°C of three commercial Al-Mg-Si alloys (AA6061, AA6022 and AA61l1) on the asquenched resistivity Pw and hardness H.,NULL, w was investigated. It was found that the field gave a significant increase in Pw and in Hv,w, for AA6022 and AA6111, but had no clear effect on AA6061. Thermodynamic analysis gave that the effect of the field on AA6022 and AA6111 was to reduce both the enthalpy ?H, and entropy ?H, of solution. Considering the chemical composition of the three alloys it appears that the influence of the field may depend on the amount of Cu plus excess Si present in the alloy.IntroductionKlypin and Soloviev [1, 2] were the first to report that the application of an external electric field during solution heat treatment (SHT) of Al alloys gave an increase in the as-quenched resistivity and hardness. They attributed these effects of the field to an increase in solubility of the alloying constituents during the SHT. More recently Liu and coworkers [3, 4] also reported an increase in the as-quenched resistivity of Al-Li alloys with application of an electric field during SHT. Further, the present authors [5] found that the application of an electric field during the SHT of the commercial Al-Mg-Si alloys AA6022 and AA61i1 increased their as-quenched resistivity and hardness. Their thermodynamic analysis of the results indicated that the field decreased both the enthalpy ?H, and entropy ?S, of solution."

Samuel Hopkins, an 18th century inventor from Philadelphia, has been little noted nor long remembered by History, but it was he who on July 31, 1790, obtained what no other man can ever achieve -the first patent issued by the Government of the United States. Signed by President George Washington, the patent guaranteed to Hopkins the protection of the American Government for his "improvement, not known or used before, . . . in the making of Potash . . . by a new Apparatus and Process." The patent itself is no longer important, but it serves as a milestone in the development of an industry that is now rapidly moving to fulfill its role as a mineral to feed the world. Potash ranks as one of the oldest products of Man, having been used as a condiment by the habitants of Gaul a thousand years before Athens achieved its Golden Age of culture. By Hopkins' time, the uses of potash had changed considerably, going primarily into glass-making, tanning, soap, and explosives, yet the same sources and techniques of manufacturing potash used during the earlier 2000 years-that is, leaching of plant ashes in iron pots with water, followed by water evaporation and crystallization of the potassium salts-were still being used.

Chromium-containing vanadium slag (V-Cr slag) was obtained by an industrial smelting process of Hongge Ore, which is valuable vanadium-titanium magnetite to extract V and Cr in China. Sodium roasting thermodynamics of V-Cr slag in presence of oxygen were calculated to evaluate the reactivity of chemical compounds. Results showed that the oxidation of FeV2O4 was intensified in presence of Na2CO3 while the oxidation tendency of FeCr2O4 was far lower than that of FeV2O4. It was probably that reactions of impurities including Al2O3, SiO2 and Fe2O3 with Na2CO3 happened and the products can promote the oxidation of vanadium or chromium compounds in lower valence. Based on thermodynamic analysis, a two-step selective extraction process of vanadium and chromium was proposed. Extraction rate of vanadium was 88.6% while 7.0% for chromium in the first extraction step; extraction rate of 90.7% and 95.4% for vanadium and chromium, respectively, were obtained in the second step.

In this work, a comprehensive field study was carried out to measure the background air quality status and identify the air pollution sources from opencast mines around a heritage site in India. Air quality modeling was conducted to envisage dust concentration due to existing and closed mines in the region. The air quality modeling exercise predicted that particulate-matter levels of PM10 and PM2.5 might increase in the ranges of 3.2 to 23.1 and 2.1 to 8.9 μg/m3, respectively, due to mining activities when some of the closed mines will be operated in the region without controlled emission. The predicted total PM10 and PM2.5 at the selected receptor locations were in the ranges of 86.39 to 194.89 and 34.82 to 99.55 μg/m3, respectively. Adequate measures were suggested to control air pollution from mining activities, and an intelligent dry fog system was designed to suppress dust emission efficiently from mineral processing plants and opencast mines. The developed system has special features for facilitating eco-friendly mining.

Recirculation is the major concern associated with the utilization of booster fans. In controlled recirculation, a portion of the return air is purposely mixed with the intake air and the mixture is directed towards a working district, while the air quantity and gas concentrations in the air are closely monitored and managed. The objectives of this study were to determine the gas concentration in intake and return airways during controlled recirculation, and to determine the recirculation fraction for multiple headings. Experiments were conducted in a laboratory model to determine the effect of controlled recirculation on the quality of air circulated through the working faces. Preliminary results showed that recirculation is beneficial to ventilation planning because it reduces the build-up of air contaminants at the working faces and reduces the overall power consumptions. The experimental results were used to quantify the recirculation fraction and to calibrate ventilation models of the laboratory model. These models are used to simulate the controlled recirculation and to predict the gas concentrations in multiple headings.

Longwall mining and pipelines have coexisted since longwall mining was introduced into the United States. How the pipeline operator reacts to longwall mining under their line depends on many factors. This paper outlines the process the pipeline operator goes through to determine the appropriate response when their pipeline is being undermined. Typical mitigation procedures are reviewed. Finally, the paper looks at current design practices for new pipelines that are expected to be undermined during their lifetime.

The Bureau of Mines studied the effect of alloy additions on abrasive wear of low-alloy steels. A dry-sand, rubber-wheel abrasion test appa-ratus using ASTM G65-Sl procedure B was used for the abrasive wear tests. Eighty-six material heat-treatment combinations were abrasion tested. Results of these tests were analyzed statistically using regression analysis to see if additions of Cr, Mn, Mo, Ni, Si, AI, Cu, and S were significant in affecting the abrasive wear rate of low-alloy steels. Regression analysis was also used to confirm hardness and C affect on the abrasive wear rate of these steels. It was found that for all the steels taken as a group, increased amounts of Mn significantly reduced the wear rate, while increased amounts of Mo and S1 increased the wear rate. Analysis also confirmed previous research done by others, that increasing hardness and amounts of C reduced the wear rate. For the hardened steels taken as a class, only increasing amounts of C and Mn reduced the wear rate, while increases in Si increased the wear rate. In the class of unhardened steels, increases in C, Mn, and S re-duced the wear rate, whereas increases in Mo increased the wear rate. The steels with the best resistance to wear were two hardened experimen-tal steels similar to AISI 1055 and AISI 107S.

"Experiments were carried out to determine the long-term effect of instillation of 500 mg of generic bituminous, anthracite, quartz, or titanium dioxide (Ti02) dust on the composition of pulmonary surfactant. Dust was instilled in the caudal lobe of the right lungs of female pigtailed macaque monkeys (Macaca nemestrina). The composition of surfactant isolated from cell-free bronchoalveolar lavage (CF-BAL) samples obtained from right lungs (dust exposed) at various times over the following year was compared with that of surfactant isolated from CF-BAL from left lungs (dust free) . Little change was seen in the amount of surfactant-associated lipid phosphorus as a result of exposure to dust. Exposure to quartz, anthracite, or Ti02 dust induced a significant increase in the total amount of protein in the surfactant-enriched fraction. The relative amount of specific proteins was also altered: surfactant-associated protein A decreased, and the amount of the heavy and light chains of immunoglobulin molecules (identified by NHiterminal amino acid sequence analysis) increased. These changes were visible more than a year after instillation of quartz and at least 3 months after instillation of anthracite dust. Despite variation in the responses of the individual animals, the changes observed might serve as an indicator of the severity of the effect of exposure of the lung to mineral dust and/or to pathogens. It functions to reduce surface tension and may help to prevent pulmonary edema [19] and to protect against infection [13]. The importance of surfactant to normal Jung function is illustrated by the fact that neonates lacking appropriate surfactant undergo respiratory distress and do not survive without clinical support."

The mineralogy and textures of cyclone dust, sludge, and occasional build-ups in the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) direct iron making pilot plant at Universal, Pennsylvania have been studied by reflected light, transmitted light, and cathodoluminescence microscopy, and phase compositions have been determined by SEM-EDS. The cyclone dust consists of particles of carbon, metallic iron, sulfur-bearing iron, and wustite. Measurements of particles in the sludge indicate that 69% are less than 2.5 µm across, 21 % are 2.5-5 µm, and 10% are larger than 5 µm. Mineralogically the sludge particles are mainly carbon and metallic iron, with minor wustite and sulfur-bearing iron. Build-ups that sporadically develop in the furnace consist of olivine, hercynite spinel, metallic iron, wustite, pyrrhotite, pseudobrookite, akermanite-ferroakermanite and gehlenite. The microtextures shown by the build-ups indicate that much of that material has precipitated at the build-up loci. This study has been supported by AISI and the U.S. Department of Energy.
