In the late 1970's, the Bureau of Mines began to examine the criteria for reestablishing vegetative cover on coal strip mine spoils near Glenrock, WY. A 9-acre plot, consisting of (1) spoils covered with topsoil, (2) spoils without topsoil, and (3) spoils treated with sewage sludge, was constructed. These plots were seeded with Tegmar intermediate wheatgrass (Agropyron intermedium), Fairway crested wheatgrass (A. cristatum), and Critana thickspike wheatgrass (A. dasystachyum). After 5 yr, the topsoil had about 70 pct plant coverage. Revegetated spoils, without topsoil addition, averaged approximately 30 pct plant coverage, and sewage sludge-treated spoils had about 45 pct plant coverage. Comparison of grass types showed the intermediate wheatgrass produced greater surface coverage.

Due to their ability to produce high-resolution images of the subsurface to great depths, seismic surveys provide critical inputs to almost all oil and gas exploration projects. However, with some notable exceptions, seismic surveys have rarely been used in mineral exploration. In the past, this was due to both technical and financial reasons. Significant developments on both fronts mean that seismic surveys can now offer substantial benefits to mineral exploration and mining, and surveys conducted for exploration can provide important data sets for mine planning over the life of a mining project.We present case history data that show that seismic surveys can greatly assist with mapping the 3D distribution of lithologies and alteration and, in favourable circumstances, directly detect mineralisation in and around mineral systems. As a result of their high spatial sampling density, seismic surveys are also highly effective at mapping structures that can remain undetected or poorly characterised by drilling alone. These structures may host or provide important vectors to mineralisation. They can also be particularly important when planning shafts, raise bores, declines, stopes and open pit walls. Illinois produced 5 per cent more crude oil in 1934 than in 1933, because there was less curtailment, and. the value of the year's production at the wells was 35 per cent more than that of the previous year. The average price of Illinois crude oil in 1934 was $1.13 as compared with $0.87 in 1933, an increase of 30 per cent. The quotas of allowable production for Illinois during 1934, as authorized by Oil Administrator Harold L. Ickes, were as follows: January, February, March, 12,000 bbl. per day; April, May, 12,500; June, July, 12,600; August, 12,500; September, October, November, 12,000; December, 11,700. No other restrictions on production were in effect during the year until Oct. 11, when it was found necessary to prorate the fields to 75 per cent, a curtailment of 25 per cent below the quota fixed by the Federal Administrator. On Dec. 1 the curtailment was reduced to 18 per cent and on Dec. 18, to 15 per cent. Of the 26 wells drilled, 10 were oil producers, 8 were in proved fields and 2 were in a new pool in Wabash County, l½ miles south of the nearest production, one was a small gas well on the Stubblefield anticline in Bond County, one was an input well for repressuring in the Colmar-Plymouth field, McDonough County, and 14 were dry holes, mostly scattered wildcat tests.

The anthracite coal trade, with a shipment averaging about 70,000,000 tons per year, differs essentially from other coal business, iii the fact that the larger sizes, comprising about 65 per cent. of the total, are used almost exclusively for domestic purposes, principally during the winter months; and that for proper combustion close-sizing is imperative, so that eight sizes are made; broken, egg, stove, and nut, known as prepared sizes, and pea, buckwheat, rice, and barley, known as steam sizes. These sizes are made in the regular course of preparation, and but little variation in the natural percentage of each is practicable. Thus it is necessary either to work the collieries intermittently, or to dispose of all the varying sizes in their fixed proportions. Unfortunately, the market does not at all times absorb the coal in proper proportions, and rather than interfere with the regular operation of the mines it has been found economical to provide storage for the excess. While the cellars of' the consumers are the great storage-plants of the country, this capacity is not under the control of the trade, except so far as reduced prices during the spring and summer months may tempt the use of this reserve. The same remark applies but with less force to the retail yards, which, though usually small, store in the aggregate a large amount of anthracite. While every effort is made to utilize to the utmost the individual storage-capacity of the country, there still remains the necessity for taking care of the irregularities of the market by the construction of storage-plants under the direct control of the producers. Such plants are usually the property of the railroads, and are situated at points most convenient from a traffic stand-point.

"IntroductionThe purpose of this chapter is to describe current practices in operation and maintenance of flotation circuits in Canadian mineral processing plants. The chapter consists of five sections covering description of equipment, typical flow diagrams, operating practice, instrumentation and maintenance. The approach to this subject matter is intended to be practical in nature, hence no deeply technical treatment of flotation theory will be included.Flotation is an extremely common method of beneficiation of ores. Reasons are the relatively low cost of flotation compared to many other processes, the wide range of minerals to which flotation may be applied and the high efficiency of separation which can usually be achieved. The flotation process as we know it today has been developed within this century and it has had a major impact on the mining industry. While flotation is commonly considered to be important because it provides a relatively simple method of separating minerals in complex ores, the availability of flotation has also made a multitude of mineral deposits in Canada into economically viable mining operations because it allowed production of a concentrate of valuable minerals from the ore. These concentrates could then be transported from geographically remote locations to centraHzed plants for further processing, although the existence of the remote and perhaps small ore body alone would not have justified installation of metallurgical processing plants on site and the grade of ore would not have justified direct shipment of ore.Some of the more common minerals concentrated by flotation are sulphides of copper, nickel, cobalt, iron, zinc, molybdenum, lead and arsenic, as well as non-sulphides such as sodium chloride, potassium chloride, phosphates, silicates, chromite, fluorite, limestone and coal. Precious metals are also recovered by flotation, generally in association with another sulphide mineral."

From 2002 to 2006, longwall mining was undertaken directly beneath the Cataract Tunnel, which is a 100-year-old, heritage-listed tunnel in Hawkesbury Sandstone responsible for delivering 20 per cent of Sydney’s annual water supply. At one location, undermining resulted in movement of at least 350 mm along a known fault that transects the tunnel. During this movement, the continued operation of the tunnel was ensured through a careful system of planning, monitoring and management.Of key importance to the success of the operation was the use of advanced numerical modelling to guide operations at all levels, including feasibility assessment, pre-mine mitigation works, monitoring design, operation performance and post-mining condition. This allowed many aspects of the potential impacts to be explored, including joint movements, rock mass deformations and changes in permeability. A key challenge was to successfully model near-field influences on adverse geological structure due to very far-field effects. This paper explains the model’s conceptual development, calibration, performance and limitations.Modelling provided the confidence to manage the impacts of large mining-induced movement on key infrastructure and ultimately predicted fault movement accurately. "The first 90 years of the last century generated a considerable volume of technical literature on the subject of grinding mill power and its prediction. It is therefore surprising that during this time there were no published models for predicting grinding mill power draw which were validated using a wide range of comprehensive industrial scale data.Notwithstanding this lack of data, the majority of models placed limited emphasis on the internal dynamics of mills and relied on simple assumptions which considered the charge to take up a fixed position and shape.Laboratory based studies (Liddell, 1986), and industrial data (Morrell, 1993), showed that these assumptions did not hold over a wide range of operating conditions, and brought into doubt the ability of the (then) existing models to accurately predict grinding mill power draw. Furthermore no model treated AG,SAG and ball mills as a single class of devices whose power draw could be predicted with the same equations.Through a detailed investigation of the charge dynamics, coupled with a large data base of industrial mill power draws, this situation was rectified by the end of the century, by which time a model had been developed and validated, which accurately predicted the power draw of all wet tumbling mills. This paper describes this model and reviews some of the earlier attempts at mill power modelling.INTRODUCTIONThe early 1900?s saw the beginnings of published papers which tackled the problem of what influenced the power draw of tumbling mills and what equations (models) were suitable for predicting power draw. This interest continued for the rest of the 20th century and the literature contains many papers that attempted to satisfactorily answer these questions. A common and disappointing theme in the majority of them, however, is the distinct lack of suitable experimentally derived power draw data. This deficiency consequently limited the practical application of many of the attempts at modelling mill power draw. Prior to the early 1990?s some limited data on the power draw of grinding mills in the literature can be found, but as Harris et al (1985) remarked they are ?... too frequently unusable simply because one or more essential variables have been omitted?. The absence of published results, from vigorous experimental testing of the various models, has resulted in a general lack of evaluation of the validity of assumptions and hypotheses that such models contain. Harris et al (1985) however, did make some efforts in attempting to evaluate the performance of various power prediction equations and in so doing further developed a semi-empirical one of their own. However, in using manufacturers? published data, which themselves were undoubtedly generated by proprietary equations of unproven validity, they probably succeeded in generating little more than a consensus of the various errors in these models."

O estudo do efeito da adição de nióbio em um ferro fundido branco alto cromo tratado termicamente com 25%Cr e 3%C foi estudado neste trabalho por microscopia ótica, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e difração de raios X. Partindo de uma liga hipereutética, a adição de 2% de nióbio foi definida considerando que todo Nb adicionado se encontraria na forma de carbonetos de nióbio, NbC, e com o objetivo de obter uma microestrutura próxima à eutética. A adição promoveu um refinamento da microestrutura, sendo que uma fração volumétrica de 27% de carbonetos M7C3 foi observada. Carbonetos grosseiros, inicialmente formados, não são facilmente observados. Uma microestrutura formada por NbC e eutético, M7C3 + matriz (austenita ou martensita), foi obtida. Os carbonetos de nióbio formados são encontrados principalmente na forma compacta. É esperado, portanto, que, a liga com adição de 2% de nióbio apresente melhor resistência ao desgaste abrasivo que a liga sem nióbio, em razão dos carbonetos primários, frágeis e grosseiros, terem sido praticamente suprimidos após a adição de Nb e uma microestrutura mais refinada tenha sido obtida.

Bureau of Mines personnel evaluated the potential availability of nickel from 151 deposits in 18 market economy countries and selected 126 for detailed analyses. An evaluation was made of tonnage-cost relationships indicating the quantity of nickel available at various total costs of production expressed in dollars per pound nickel, including a 15-pct rate of return on the invested capital. The 126 deposits studied contain approximately 73 million metric tons (t) of nickel. An estimated 52 million t is available from laterite deposits, of which less than 2 pct could be produced at $3.50/lb Ni, about equal to the average published price of nickel in 1981. Approximately 21 million t of nickel is available from sulfide deposits, of which about 10.0 million t can be produced at $3.50/lb. Sensitivity studies performed for both laterite deposits and sulfide deposits indicate that the total cost of nickel from laterites is most sensitive to increases in energy costs, and that sulfides are most sensitive to increases in labor costs; sulfides are also sensitive to changes in byproduct revenues. In 1983 the Nickel Mountain mine in Oregon was the only U.S. producer, though development continued on the Gasquet property in California. Of the total 5.1 million t of recoverable nickel in the United States, about 20 pct is available at or below $3.50/lb.

There is an increasing demand for refrigeration as mines progress deeper. Mine refrigeration plants have special requirements in terms of their duty and application. There are no national or international standards applicable for the testing of these plants. There have been numerous examples of plants failing to meet their required nominal capacity, but with the plant owner being unable to enforce the design duty on the manufacturer, due to a failure to unambiguously specify testing or accepting criteria. This paper discusses some of the reasons for performance shortcomings and describes a methodology for developing and specifying performance criteria, when inviting design and/or construction tenders, and a method of performance and acceptance testing once the plant has been built and commissioned. These guidelines encompass the full range of performance duties expected from a mine plant, including stable operation at maximum and minimum plant capacity, and under the various combinations of extremes of high and low condensing and evaporating pressures. A description of a methodology for developing a computer-based mine refrigeration plant model is also presented as part of the performance testing criteria. The methodology is illustrated with reference to the actual performance and acceptance testing process used on the worldÆs largest bulk air cooler (R67) at the Enterprise mine at Mount Isa, Australia.

This paper reviews major developments in continuous haulage technology for underground coal mines. Haulage systems, both in use and development, are investigated through a comprehensive literature search and visits to mines and manufacturers. The systems include flexible conveyor train, mobile conveyor, multiple-unit continuous haulage, extensible, and belt turning systems. Strengths and weaknesses of the systems are assessed in light of their operating under remote control and their application to the computer-assisted continuous mining machine being developed by the U.S. Bureau of mines. Through mining scenarios, candidate haulage systems are conceptualized to be consistent with the capabilities of the mining machine.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the more significant coalbeds in Butler County, Pa. It is one of a series planned to determine which coals are suitable for producing metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. More than 2 million tons of coal was produced in Butler County in 1958, of which about 25 percent was cleaned mechanically in four cleaning plants. Updating the 1942 coal-reserve estimates made by Ashley to December 31, 1958, more than 1,266 million tons of recoverable coal reserves remain in the county in beds that arc 24 inches or more thick. The Upper and Lower Freeport, Upper, Middle, and Lower Kittanning, Clarion, and Brookville beds were selected on the basis of production and estimated minable reserves. Sample locations were chosen after a study of the literature, conferences with mining engineers and mining company officials in the field, and examination of the available sites. Four samples each were collected from the Upper Freeport and Middle Kittanning beds, three samples from the Brookville bed, two, samples from the Upper Kittanning bed, and one sample each from the Lower Freeport, Lower Kittanning, and Clarion beds.

"Banded iron formations are the major iron source for producing high grade concentrate. BIF are generally lower grade and more difficult to extract. In order to know how best to process BIF ore, it require comprehensive knowledge on ore bodies even in the early stages of the mining process. Geometallurgy combines geological and mineral processing information and allows for higher flexibility in response to changes in the plant feed when mining different parts of the ore. This can lead to economic benefits, owing to improved plant operation, yet is time consuming and correspondingly costly. The main focus of this paper work has been to develop a comprehensive geometallurgical testing framework for developing Yogi BIF low grade magnetite deposit located at Western Australia. In order to provide successful geometallurgical mapping, was collected data from several different disciplines (geology, chemistry, mineralogy) and parameters (physical properties, metallurgical response and geotechnical measurements) during drilling activities and test work. The investigation shown magnetic separation behavior of material had high variation and is most important element in the proper design of ore beneficiation plant. This paper provides an improved and efficient magnetic separation test methods used for the investigation of separation behavior and variability of the Yogi Ore deposit and evaluates their applicability and potential in the geometallurgical context. In this paper a small-scale magnetic separation has been developed that allows estimating from single pass separation test using small amounts of sample material. Verification of the evaluation method and validation was done with different mineral systems."

Pressure acid leaching of nickel laterite ores typically involves the production of an intermediate product that is releached and refined to pure nickel and cobalt products. BHP Billiton is developing the Ravensthorpe Nickel Project to produce up to 50,000 t/y of nickel via a mixed hydroxide intermediate, which will be refined at its Queensland Nickel (QNI) Yabulu Refinery near Townsville, Queensland. The hydroxide precipitation flowsheet has been adapted to process high magnesium ores through an atmospheric leach stage, eliminate iron(III) as jarosite and oxidise iron(II) during neutralisation. The neutralisation conditions are controlled to precipitate aluminium, chromium and silicon, and to ensure good solid-liquid separation. Soluble impurities such as magnesium are purged with the tailings stream and will be managed over the long term by crystallisation in evaporation ponds.

For some time fine coal (-0.5 mm) flot ation has been considered as a bulk flotation problem. Combinations of hydrocarbon oils and frothers have been used as surface active agents in coal flotation. The selectivity of the flotation process has always been poor in such cases. With the increase in fine coal production due to mining methods and coal handling systems, optimisation of fine coal treatment.has become important. Petrographic and mineralogical composit- ions of coal particles have been reported to influence their flotability. The problem becomes more complex due to surface oxidation of coal and the presence of slime forming clay minerals in the run of mine coal. In this paper, the flotation problem is examined on the basis of various constituents of coal and their associated gangue minerals. The selection of reagents has been suggested on the basis of their surface chemical properties. Factors such as surface modific- ation of coal and gangue materials, flotation kinetics and hydrocarbon oil - coal inter- action have been critically evaluated to improve fine coal flotation recovery.

What is required for the mining industry to grow and prosper in a politically challenging world? The answer to this can be summarized as “the industry’s three priorities.” The first priority is gaining access to the world’s mineralized jurisdictions. The second is establishing a measure of security and predictability in government treatment of mining. Confidence in the stability of the fiscal and legal framework within which mining operates is necessary to encourage the investment of large amounts of capital in mine development. The third priority is sustaining the industry’s welcome during the long term in those jurisdictions worthy of investment.

Biosorption of heavy metals can be an effective process for the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. In this study, the adsorption properties of nonliving (boiling in NaOH) biomass of phanerochaete chrysosporium. For Pb (II) and Zn (II) were investigated by using batch adsorption techniques. The effects of initial metal ion concentration, initial pH, biosorbent concentration, stirring speed, effect of temperature and contact time on biosorption efficiency were studied. Experimental results indicated that the uptake capacity and adsorption yield of one metal ion were reduced by the presence of the other metal ion. In the experiments the optimum pH value was found out 6.0. The experimental adsorption data were fitted to the Langmuir and Frundlich adsorption models. The highest metals uptake was calculated for Zn (II) and Pb (II) were 57 and 87 respectively. desorption of heavy metal ions was performed by 50 mM HNO3 solution. The results indicated that the biomass of p.chrysosporium is a suitable biosorbent for removing heavy metals ion from aqueous solution.

The Fimiston Open Pit (commonly referred to as the æSuper PitÆ) is a part of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd (KCGM) operation in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. KCGM manages the Fimiston Open Pit, the Mt Charlotte underground mine, the Fimiston Mill and the Gidji Roaster for its Joint Venture Owners, Newmont and Barrick Australia. KCGM produces up to 850 000 ounces of gold per year. The KCGM operations are located on the historical Golden Mile on the outskirts of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, about 600 kilometres east of Perth Western Australia. This traditionally underground mining centre has been worked since 1893, yielding in excess of 50 Moz of gold from ore with an average head grade of 10 g/t. This represents approximately ten per cent of the gold produced in Australia and one per cent of the gold produced in the world. The Fimiston Open Pit is essentially an aggregation of what were known as the Judd, South, Paringa, Croesus/Eclipse, Central, Brownhill, Drysdale, Morrison, North and Horseshoe pits into one continuous large-scale operation. The old Fimiston Underground Operations (included the Main, Croesus, Chaffers, Lake View, and Perseverance shafts) were also located within the area of the Fimiston Open Pit. The underground operations closed in 1992 due to high mining costs.

Mine waste rock is unavoidable in the recovery of ore by open pit mining methods. Effective management of waste rock movement covers the removal and placement of the waste rock, generally in a surface dump in the most cost-effective way while satisfying the long-term environmental expectations. Since the 1960s, there has been significant research carried out into planning of ore movement from open pit mines such that the overall net present value (NPV) of the project can be maximised. Currently, several software packages are available to achieve this task as a common practice within the mining industry. However, planning of mine waste rock movement is still achieved manually, as the available software does not consider optimal waste rock movement and dump design. This paper describes a tool to optimise waste rock placement, which minimises the haulage cost while creating environmentally friendly waste rock dumps through selective placement and encapsulation of the reactive waste rock in the dump. The embedded methodology in this tool has been developed based on the mixed integer programming (MIP) modelling technique to optimise the waste rock movement. The methodology provides an easily-manipulated and fully-automatic tool for professionals to complete waste rock dump scheduling in four main steps: data input, model construction, model computation and solution retrieval. The application of the new tool into a real case project in this paper shows that it can determine economically and environmentally optimised waste rock dump schedules in an acceptable time frame.CITATION:Fu, Z, Li, Y, Topal, E and Williams, D J, 2015.
