The emerging problem of electronic waste has promoted the interest in exploring metal recovery from secondary sources under the umbrella of urban mining. This study presents the physical and chemical characterization of various components present in end-of-life laptops to help ascertain the sites of metallic values and develop sustainable and environment-friendly recycling. The recycling potential of a laptop is evaluated by sequential disassembly, separation, and characterization of components such as body (49.8 wt.%), printed circuit board (9.7 wt.%), hard disk drive (4.9 wt.%), and battery (12.4 wt.%). The printed circuit boards comprise metallic values, majorly copper (25 wt.%), tin (5.8 wt.%), and lead (3.1 wt.%). The precious metals (Au, Ag) with an economic advantage are abundantly present in electronic components such as integrated circuits, capacitors, resistors, and processors. Critical elements such as lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements are detected in the discarded laptops' batteries and hard disk drives. The recycling potential representing the amount of material that can be recycled in various components, depending on the type, concentration, and purity, is determined in the range of 36–100%. On average, a unit laptop contains~ 386 g of Cu (14.45 wt. %), 49.73 g Co (1.86 wt. %), ~346 mg Ag, ~141.2 mg Au, ~650 mg of rare earth elements (Nd, Dy). This study presents a database for investigating integrated and economical recycling techniques from different components of a laptop, and an overall process flow is also proposed.

"Chalcopyrite, a major source of copper, is commonly found associated with iron sulfides, particularly pyrite. The separation of chalcopyrite and pyrite by flotation is difficult due to the galvanic interactions between pyrite and chalcopyrite during grinding and flotation. Galvanic interactions may cause oxidation and dissolution of chalcopyrite, copper activation of pyrite and the formation of hydrophilic iron hydroxide coating. The overall effect may change the floatability of the components and lead to the misplacement of pyrite into chalcopyrite concentrate. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of lignosulfonate-based biopolymers on the depression of pyrite in the flotation of chalcopyrite with xanthate as collector and the mechanism responsible for the selective depression of pyrite. The flotation results showed that biopolymers depressed the flotation of both copper-activated pyrite and chalcopyrite in single mineral flotation although to different extents. In the flotation of mixed mineral systems, biopolymers significantly depressed pyrite flotation but had a less influence on chalcopyrite flotation. The selective depression of pyrite by biopolymers was due to the preferential adsorption of biopolymers on copper-activated pyrite surface. Galvanic interactions between pyrite and chalcopyrite surfaces promoted copper activation on pyrite. Presence of cuprous ions on pyrite surface favored biopolymer adsorption by the formation of a complex between the cuprous ions and biopolymer molecules. The same galvanic interactions also facilitated chalcopyrite oxidation leading to the formation of hydrophobic polysulfide that enhanced the hydrophobicity on chalcopyrite surface. The biopolymer structure controlled the depression effect. The results showed that the biodegradable biopolymers are promising depressants for pyrite.INTRODUCTIONCopper sulfide minerals, such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), bornite (Cu5FeS4), chalcocite (Cu2S) and covellite (CuS), are the major mineral source for copper. They are often found finely interlocked with iron sulfides, especially pyrite (FeS2) (Owusu, Brito e Abreu, Skinner, Addai-Mensah, & Zanin, 2014). Pyrite, as the most abundant sulfide mineral, is perceived as gangue in most cases and should be removed from the associated sulfides to minimize its contamination of the copper concentrate (Owusu, Addai-Mensah, Fornasiero, & Zanin, 2013; Wang & Forssberg, 1991). The commonly used strategy to remove pyrite is flotation (Wang & Forssberg, 1991)."

To reduce U.S. dependence on imports of titanium, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has investigated the recovery of titanium from perovskite (CaTi03). Domestic perovskite deposits represent a significant, but untapped, titanium resource. An acid sulfation method was developed that will extract about 97 pct of the titanium and the columbium and 70 to 90 pct of the rare-earth byproducts from perovskite concentrates. A flow-sheet for recovering titanium as pigment-grade titanium dioxide (Ti02) is discussed. Test work performed in developing each unit operation is described. The first three unit operations have been demonstrated using laboratory-scale continuous methods of operation: acid sulfation of perovskite concentrates, leaching sulfation residue to dissolve metal values, and precipitation of titanium oxysulfate monohydrate (TiOS04?HP) from the resulting leach flltrate. Batch testing of other unit operations was performed: TiOS04?H20 redissolution and iron reduction, precipitation of Ti02 by hydrolysis, and regenerating recoverable acid with rare-earth byproduct recovery. Cost evaluation results are provided, indicating that processing perovskite concentrates by acid sulfation may be an economically viable means of producing Ti02.

The solubility of cementite in austenite is computed by thermodynamic methods from the observed solubility of graphite. It is found that the solubility of cementite is greater than that of graphite in the entire austenite temperature range. Thus the prior discrepancy between this portion of the phase diagram and the observed metastability of cementite is partially resolved. FOR several years it has been apparent that a serious discrepancy exists in certain observations pertaining to the Fe-C system. Direct experimental data indicate: 1-That the curve representing the solubility of graphite in austenite'" crosses that for cementite4 at about 945°C as shown in Fig. 1. 2— That graphite and austenite saturated therewith are stable1 relative to cementite at all temperatures between the eutectoid, about 723°C, and the eutectic, about 1153°C. These observations are mutually incompatible in view of a well-known consequence of the second law of thermodynamics, namely, that the stable phase (presumably graphite at all temperatures) has a lower solubility than the metastable phase (presumably cementite). Hence either 1 or 2 above must be in error; either the measured solubility of graphite or of cementite, or the observation as to the stability of graphite, is in error. Our present purposes are: 1—To collate the available data on cementite and prepare a table of HO — HO° and of (Fa— HO°)/T. This tabular method seems the best and most convenient way to represent the heat and free energy of formation. 2—To determine whether the measured solubilities of cementite and graphite in austenite are in accord with the above table and the measured thermodynamic properties of austenite, in order to resolve, if possible, the existing paradox of these two solubilities. Enthalpy of Cementite The enthalpy of cementite at 273 °K, H279 — HOcem, was computed by integration of the low temperature heat capacity as measured by Seltz, McDonald, and Wells" 68" to 298 °K) and as given by the Debye functions recommended by them (0" to 68°K); the result is included in Table I. At higher temperature HCem — H,,"" is given by Kelley who used the data of Naeser7 (298" to 1037°K) and of Umino8,9 (273° to 1923°K). Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines have developed a FORTRAN computer program that can calculate stress states from overcoring measurements obtained from hollow inclusion cells, triaxial cells, strain gauges installed on the wall of a bored raise, doorstopper gauges, borehole deformation gauges, or a combination of any of these gauges. Such stress states are calculated with reference to global and principal coordinate systems. The background of the development of the program, its capabilities, and its special features, as well as the input required, are described in this report. Sample output is also shown in appendix C. Difficulties associated with numerical calculations of principal stresses and directions are pointed out. Threshold values for detecting these problems are reported; these values may be changed by the user as desired. Several test problems were set up to verify the computer program and were successfully solved.

This paper presents measurement and analysis of the dynamic response of a five-storey building to very high frequency excitation (>100 Hz) from blasting vibrations originating from a contiguous excavation of rock. Velocity response measurements in the rock and on the structure were employed to calculate the time-correlated dynamic displacement response of the building to blasting. Time-correlated structure response measurements are needed to advance the understanding of the response of urban structures to high-frequency excitation. Current regulations and understanding are based upon measurements of the response of one- to two-storey residential structures by 10 to 40 Hz excitation. The extension of these observations to taller structures when excited by high-frequency excitation needs to be investigated further.Measurements show that the amplification patterns at the ground level and top of the structure match or are lower than that observed by the US Bureau of Mines (Siskind et al, 1980) for the shorter residential structures. They decrease with increasing peak particle velocity. From the measurements, the global transverse shear strains found by differentiating ground floor and top displacements were calculated to be 12 µstrains. Time-correlated bottom and top of structure displacements show that building response may be more reflective of wave propagation up the structure than whole-structure inter-storey drift.In addition, a 3D model was used to compare computed displacements and strains to measured results. Modelled responses varied considerably, both in magnitude and location of the maximum strain. No conclusion can be made regarding the best 3D model to employ to simulate building response. More data such as motions measured at many points in the structure are needed. Maximum inter-storey transverse shear strains calculated with the model were found through the acceleration excitation and were less than 12 µstrains for 37 mm/s rock motion excitation. Keywords: Ilmenite, titania slag, pig iron, rutile, zircon Located on the eastern shores of South Africa, 180 km north of Durban, Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) produces approximately 2.0 million metric tonnes of product annually making RBM a leading producer of titania slag, high purity pig iron, rutile and zircon. Heavy minerals are extracted from the nearby dunes by dredging and concentration on a floating gravity separation plant, followed by separation of the ilmenite, rutile and zircon at the mineral separation plant located at the smelter site. The ilmenite is processed through an oxidizing roast followed by magnetic separation and is then partially reduced to an 85 per cent TiO2 slag in one of four six-in-line a.c. electric arc furnaces. The slag is milled and then classified into two product sizes suitable as a raw material for both the sulphate and chloride pigment processes. The high quality iron produced during the reduction process is further processed to produce various grades of low-manganese iron. Around 95 per cent of the products are exported, yielding a world market share of about 25 per cent of titania slag, rutile, high quality pig iron, and zircon.

Anglo American Platinum has adopted a strategy of best practice principles (BPP) for sampling, mass measurement, analysis, and metal accounting for more than a decade now. When new plants are designed, the most suitable sampling equipment and sampling protocols are implemented and material flows and plant layouts are designed around sampling strategies. A few years ago, a crushing plant for a high-grade matte stream was commissioned. The design called for the high-grade material to be crushed to 95% passing 2 mm, and the design allowed for a single-cutter primary Vezin sampler taking increments from a gravity flowing stream at regular intervals while filling a tanker for pneumatic offload at the base metal refinery. This was a single point of sampling and analysis that would measure the wanted output from the smelting complex and the input to the refineries. In addition, the design incorporated the functionality to collect increments in an ?interleaved? fashion from the Vezin sampler for internal precision checks. The metal accounting strategy for Anglo Platinum involves the ongoing measurement of all inputs, outputs, and stock levels for all operations for platinum group metal (PGM) and base metal (BM) content. Included are yearly stocktakes, usually done on 1 February, across the smelters and refineries (at least the base metal refinery). In the accounting period immediately following the introduction of the new crushing and sampling facility, a trend was developing whereby the absolute difference between the physical stock and theoretical stock (PGMs predominantly) increased for the two respective sites on an ongoing basis. The smelter showed an increase in physical stock compared to the theoretical stock (sender) and the base metal refinery showed an increase in theoretical stock against physical stock. Because of this anomaly, an additional stocktake was held in September for the period in question, and it was confirmed through the physical stock measurement results that the PGM accounting problem was indeed pointing towards the evaluation of the high-grade matte stream. This paper showcases parts of the process that took place to explain the poor accountabilities for the two sites. Previous results from the sampler ratification process (of the interleaved sampling design) were reanalysed, a physical inspection was carried out on the sampling system again, and the sampler performance was monitored (quality control parameters) for the period. From these investigations, it was found that airflows inside the Vezin introduced the sampling bias. A change in sampling protocol was introduced, as well as certain physical changes to the sampling equipment, to eliminate the airflow and thus the bias conditions significantly. The accounting period that followed the phased upgrading process showed that the accounting between the smelter and base metal refinery had been restored to within statistical limits (difference between physical and theoretical stock below 5% relative to theoretical stock). This report presents a programme of work to demonstrate the use of a surface-based centralised computer control system for the remote monitoring and control of underground conveyors in a US coal mine. The system selected for demonstration was the 'Dynalink' Micro MINOS system which is manufactured by Hawker Siddeley Dynamics Engineering Limited. The site selected was Barnes S Tucker Lancashire No. 20 Mine located near Carrolltown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. The system concept, operating and application software was designed and developed by the. British National Coal Board. The report describes the selection of the site, specification of the system requirements, commissioning, operation and evaluation of the system under typical US mine operating conditions. Experience with the system, based primarily on the system reliability and performance of conveyor control, was favourable. Mine management personnel felt that the system had successfully achieved its objectives and were keen to expand monitoring and control to other activities.

During heap leaching of secondary copper sulphide ores operated at low heap temperatures and high levels of leach solution salinity, copper recovery is usually unsatisfactory, due to a slow chemical and bacteriological leaching of the covellite minerals either formed from leaching of chalcocite or naturally occurring in ores. A laboratory test program was conducted to investigate the effect of leach solution temperature in the range of 20 to 50°C on copper extraction during stirred reactor, bottle roll, and short column leaching of fresh or heap leached secondary copper sulphide ores. It was demonstrated that increasing heap temperature is an effective approach for improving recovery of copper from secondary copper sulphide ores. A review of the technologies available for heating heap leach solution or decreasing solution salinity to improve copper recovery from secondary sulphide ore indicates that an integration of copper concentrate pressure leaching with heap leaching is potentially a cost-effective approach. A copper flotation concentrate sample was tested through pressure oxidation with the use of heap leach solutions of varying strengths for the repulping of the concentrate in order to examine its effect on pressure oxidation performance. The test results indicate that use of heap leach solution of high salinity in the pressure oxidation process does not cause a negative impact on the process performance for copper extraction, sulphide oxidation, and recovery of gold (if present) from pressure leach residue, and has additional advantages of removing the bacterially inhibitory aluminum from heap leach solution and generating more acid and ferric iron in the pregnant leach solution. A flowsheet configuration for full integration of the copper concentrate pressure oxidation with heap leaching of secondary copper sulphide ore is proposed and discussed.

Mine seals are used in underground coal mines throughout the United States to isolate abandoned mining areas from the active mine workings. The objective of adding inert gas to a sealed mine area is to quickly reduce the oxygen concentration in the sealed area to a level that will not support combustion. In the US, this process is typically conducted from the ground surface and because surface-to-mine access is constrained by so many variables, it is very difficult to provide a source of inert gas to the place where it is needed underground. To alleviate this problem On Site Gas Systems, under a NIOSH contract, built a nitrogen (N2) generation plant that operates in the underground environment. The purpose of this work was to create a reliable in-mine mobile plant that would extract N2 gas from the mine atmosphere and use the gas to create and maintain a safe sealed mine area. The plant is based on a novel design using pressure swing adsorption technology and is sized to fit on a standard shield car or mine dolly for easy transport in and around an underground coal mine. The plant is capable of producing about 900 scf/min of N2 gas at ambient mine conditions. After an exhaustive series of laboratory tests, the plant was field tested at the NIOSH Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) where a portion of the mine was sealed and rendered inert. During the test, the movement of the injected gas was monitored at several underground points to observe the progress and extent of the inerting process. This paper describes the plant design and the results of the field test at the SRCM. "Ore breakage and grinding media wear have always been considered and determined separately in laboratory tests. However the two processes are linked with the ore broken down in any comminution device being responsible for the majority of the steel wear experienced. The Comminution Dynamics Laboratory (CDLab) successfully developed a test methodology that can more accurately predict grinding media wear in tumbling mills than the Bond Abrasion test. This paper looks at the possible application of the abrasive wear methodology to determine breakage parameters of the same ore used in the abrasion test. Results indicate that breakage parameters comparable to t10 can be determined using the Steel Wheel Abrasion Test (SWAT), while using significantly less ore than standard breakage tests.BACKGROUNDThe Rubber Wheel Abrasion Test (RWAT) is an internationally accepted and widely used method for determining the abrasion wear behavior of materials. The abrasion wheel test was developed to primarily utilize a steel wheel (Brinell, 1921). Haworth (1949) criticized using of the steel wheel by arguing that increasing the contact area size in the steel wheel test causes a change in the wear rate with time. He suggested that the use of a rubber wheel instead eliminates this problem, leading to the adoption of the RWAT which was standardized in ASTM G65 (2004).Radziszewski (2002), however, found that the use of the Steel Wheel Abrasion Test (SWAT) was more applicable for wear testing in the mining industry for two critical reasons. Firstly, the major cause of wear in a ball mill, the most frequently used comminution device, is ball-ore-ball contact and also ball-ore-liner which both are metal-ore-metal contact. Therefore, using the steel wheel has the advantage of providing a similar abrasive environment to the one that takes place in a real ball mill. Secondly, the SWAT creates the potential of running experiments at much higher force regimes that are closer to what happens in actual mills, unlike the RWAT which is a low stress test."

CO2 emissions from carbonate laden reclaimed mine spoil has been shown to pose a hazard to residents in homes built on or adjacent to such land. The objective of this project was to develop a soil CO2 flux survey protocol for assessing reclaimed mine land. The research involved CO2 chamber accumulation flux surveys; stable carbon isotope ratio analysis; statistical hypothesis testing to examine correlation between CO2 flux and soil temperature and moisture as well as spatial dependence; and geostatistics to map CO2 and delineate high flux zones. Soil temperature was observed to have a positive correlation with fluxes while soil moisture was observed to be negatively correlated. Spatial dependence of CO2 fluxes on reclaimed mine land was observed on one of the two study sites. The research suggests that macro-porosity and gas permeability may be important factors that explain CO2 migration in mine spoil. A flux survey protocol has been developed, based on these results, for reclaimed mine lands. The work demonstrates the capability of geostatistical methods to delineate high flux fields. Further research will be required to determine suitable thresholds for such analysis.

"INTRODUCTION Numerous deposits of iron ore are found in Cherokee, Bartow, Floyd, and Polk Counties in northwest Georgia. The deposits are generally small and irregular in shape. The ore is usually referred to as ""brown ore"" and is predominately limonite. The crude or ""bank ore"" has to be washed and concentrated before being shipped.The proximity of the deposits to the Birmingham furnaces and a favorable freight differential permit the operation of many deposits that otherwise would be uneconomical. The district produced 413,468 long tons of brown-ore concentrates, averaging 45.53 percent iron in 1943.The necessity of developing additional iron-ore reserves for the war energeucy to supplement the production of the Birmingham district, prompted the Bureau of Mines to initiate exploration of the more promising northwest Georgia deposits. Thirteen properties in the four counties were explored during the program (fig. 1).HISTORY AND PRODUCTIONSeveral furnaces were operated in the district until the early 1900's, ranging from charcoal furnaces to more modern plants with capacities up to 50 tons of pig iron. No furnaces have operated for about 40 years, the product being shipped to Alabama and Tennessee.Bartow County iron mining is declining, although formerly it was the principal producer of the district. Most of the known merchantable ore deposits have been exhausted. For the past 3 years the Mitchell-Hodge mine has annually produced about 225,000 long tons of concentrates containing 46 to 43 percent iron and at present is the only large producer in Bartow County."

The Allegheny County Sanitary Authority (ALCOSAN) adopted its Clean Water Plan (CWP) in May 2020, as part of a federal consent decree to comply with the USEPA’s Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Control Policy. Planned improvements include constructing a new regional storage/conveyance tunnel system, promoting green infrastructure/ source control, and expanding the treatment plant. Preliminary planning for the tunnel system was completed in October 2020. The Ohio River Tunnel (ORT) project is the first of three tunnel projects that make up the regional tunnel system. The ORT project began final design in 2021. This paper discusses the advancements made to the ORT preliminary planning concepts considering property availability, alignment optimization, tunnel boring machine evaluation, contract packaging and delivery schedules.

The ball mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones is an industry standard, and well known methodologies exist for equipment sizing, selection and design. However, the potential to improve the capacity of ball mill circuits by replacing cyclones with screens has been recognised for many years and recently has been successfully realised, thanks to developments in fine screening technology. Proper methodology for equipment sizing and selection is required to capitalise on this opportunity, but there is currently insufficient information and few guidelines available on how to design such a circuit. This paper discusses the differences between ball mill circuits closed with cyclones and with screens. A methodology is described for equipment sizing and selection for a circuit closed with screens, and the laboratory testing requirements are described for low grade base metal ores and magnetite ores. An economic evaluation is also presented for a case study demonstrating the potential benefits of closing a ball mill circuit with screens.CITATION:Jankovic, A and Valery, W, 2013. Intergrated energy balances and energy flows were constructed and quantified for State, regional, and national levels from four separate supply and demand commodity balances for coal, dry natural gas, petroleum and natural gas liquids, and utility electricity. These commodity balances were integrated by source and sectors through conversion and aggregation of their components to energy equivalents expressed in British thermal units (Btu). A summarization of the total gross energy components of supply and demand for commercial energy derived from direct fuels, hydropower and nuclear power, based on individual States and regions, is tabulated for 1960 and 1965. Pertinent computerization details and more than 500 individual State and regional printout tables, in both original commodity units and Btu's, are shown. Using these data, energy flows between States and regions were calculated to identify surplus and deficit energy areas. Report emphasis is on the conceptual aspects of integrated energy balances, rather than on the development of missing State energy data.

"The AMEC Oakville office is involved in the design and construction of an iron ore concentrator located in Liberia. Currently, the site ships Direct Shipped Ore (DSO) to overseas customers. The DSO mine-site and port can experience heavy annual rainfalls. The IMSBC Code requires that cargoes are only accepted for loading when the moisture content of the cargo is less than its Transportable Moisture Limit (TML). The moisture content of the DSO has, on occasions, risen to near or above its TML. AMEC was asked to advise whether the concentrate produced from the new concentrator would or would not have the same problems with moisture content and ship loading as the DSO.INTRODUCTION Liberia was, at one time, the world’s sixth largest exporter of iron ore and used some of the most modern mining operations of their time. However, the country has not produced iron ore over the past seventeen years because of civil unrest. The return of stability to the country has allowed the redevelopment of the iron ore industry. ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) obtained a concession for mining in the Nimba County area of Liberia (Figure 1) in December, 2004 and has studied the known iron ore deposits and former mining operations in this area. It began phase 1 operations in June 2011 with the direct shipping of high grade ore at a rate of up to 4Mtpa. The processing of the lower grade ore in phase 2 of the project requires additional processing capability to produce at the design rate of 15Mtpa. DSO and Concentrate The DSO in the first phase is selectively mined at an average grade of 60% Fe, and then crushed and screened to -10 mm with no washing or concentration. Testing of samples has indicated a size distribution that is finer than typical sinter feed material, although critical material below 0.10 mm is low in most cases, and overall the ore is coarser than typical concentrates or ultrafine products (Feasibility study report, 2011). The phase 1 DSO facility will cease operation after the phase 2 concentrator comes into operation."

Development of metallurgical flowsheets from drill core to production of finished metal involves two main domains: process mineralogy to sample the ore and develop a successful flowsheet producing saleable concentrate; and extractive metallurgy to convert that saleable concentrate to finished metal. Effective flowsheet development for a new or brown-field concentrator and processing facility is essential to project schedule and return on investment. Over the last decade in particular, the integration of geology, mineralogy, sampling, and mineral processing have empowered the development of an improved practice in flowsheet development. The use of geometallurgical units as a basis for best-practice sampling delivers representative study material to the laboratory. Modern automated mineralogy characterises the whole rock assembly and paymetal mineral hosting, to address downstream process implications. Batch scale flotation testing then uses this information to design and perform well-focused strategies. At early stages of the project, the Extractive Metallurgy team is engaged to determine processing constraints or other economic drivers in conversion of the saleable concentrate into finished metal. The team evaluates available technologies, assesses the impurities and key properties of the given concentrate. In many cases, changes to mineral processing flowsheet are required to maximize value per tonne of concentrate. Site conditions, availability of infrastructure, energy and power all play an important role. Modern metallurgical simulation tools such as FactSage™ and METSIM™ can quickly define the appropriate test program for each process. Bench scale testing and appropriate scale of piloting can confirm simulations and provide design criteria. A case study demonstrates how effective use of these tools and a multidisciplinary team can accelerate flowsheet development, while reducing costs and ensuring that the designed processing facilities maximize project value with minimum risk.
