1.Assessment of methane content in coal. Given a naturally low methane content in 11 Coal Seam and the fact that the areas of the 11 Seam adjacent to the tunnelway were degassing for a very, very long time due to previous development and mining, it is conservatively estimated that the remaining in -situ methane is less than 0.5m3/tonne. 2. Continuous miner cutting rate based on the past practice. The best loading rate recorded at the past operations of Smoky River Coal was 45 seconds for a 8 tonnes shuttle car. Using these records, the maximum peak loading rate potential at the face is calculated at 0.178 tonnes per one second or 10.67 tonnes per one minute. 3. Longwall mining technological improvements have provided significant increases in productivity over the last 15 years. Longwall productivity is anticipated to continue to escalate with expanded application of automated equipment. Automation technology that will likely be adopted over the next 5 years is memory cut with shearer initiation of shield movement supervised by a couple of face workers. Operations using this technology will most likely relocate many production workers from the face to the outby gate entries and position several face workers outby the shearer, exposing workers to different health and safety risks. These changing risks are primarily related to worker relocation and expected increased production levels. Workers outby the face will most likely have less dust and noise exposure, but will be exposed to other safety hazards associated with outby equipment movement, materials handling, and gate entry ground movements. The face workers will most likely be exposed to higher respirable dust and noise levels generated by the equipment at elevated production rates. Methane gas emission is also expected to increase with faster mining rates. These operational changes and the control technologies needed to reduce redefined longwall worker hazards at semiautonomous longwall operations require examination to maintain the health and safety of mine workers.

A RESPONSIBLE steel executive recently declared that scrap shortages, despite fantastic prices reaching up to $50 per ton, are responsible for the loss of 140,000 tons of steel a month and that in March 1947 alone 25 more steel furnaces could have been operating were it not for scrap scarcities. His answer to this serious situation was to ask for a speedier flow of scrap and also abolition of Government control over pig iron distribution. It would be more logical, perhaps, if an answer to this growing problem of scrap deficiency were sought within the steel industry itself. As long ago as 1933, L. B. Lindemuth, a consulting steel metallurgist, warned the steel industry that a shortage of scrap was inevitable and that beyond 1938, adequate supplies for open-hearth furnaces could not be expected. The outbreak of war, with consequent phenomenal demands on the industry, accelerated production of steel and further worsened the scrap situation. Today we are suffering from a condition which could have been prevented had the industry been more far-seeing and provided for an inevitable contingency. However, better late than never, and measures can now be taken to alleviate permanently scrap shortages in the future. This can be done by greater utilization of heavy sinter which experience proved is an excellent substitute for scrao and lump ore.

This paper outlines a unique case of the development of strategies to reduce ventilation and heating costs in Konsuln iron ore mine in northern Sweden. The mine, located just south of Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag’s Kiruna iron ore mine, was developed as a test mine from 2018-2020 for the Sustainable Underground Mining (SUM) project. Besides functioning as a test mine, Konsuln also contributes to ore production. The existing mine ventilation system was designed for the current production rate of 0.8 million tons per annum (Mtpa). There is a plan to increase this rate to between 1.8 and 2.0 Mtpa.

"For decades, pillar recovery accounted for a quarter of all roof fall fatalities in underground coal mines. Studies showed that a miner on a pillar recovery section was at least three times more likely to be killed by a roof fall than other coal miners. Since 2007, however, there has been just one fatal roof fall on a pillar line. This paper describes the process that resulted in this historic achievement. It covers both the key research findings and the ways in which those insights, beginning in the early 2000s, were implemented in mining practice.One key finding was that safe pillar recovery requires both global and local stability. Global stability is addressed primarily through proper pillar design, and became a major focus after the 2007 Crandall Canyon mine disaster. But the most significant improvements resulted from detailed studies that showed that local stability, defined as roof control in the immediate work area, could be achieved with three interventions:• Leaving an engineered final stump, rather than extracting the entire pillar;• Enhancing roof bolt support, particularly in intersections, and• Increasing the use of Mobile Roof Supports (MRS)A final component was an emphasis on better management of pillar recovery operations. This included a focus on worker positioning, as well as on the pillar and lift sequences, MRS operations, and hazard identification. As retreat mines have incorporated these elements into their Roof Control Plans, it has become clear that pillar recovery is not ""inherently unsafe.""The paper concludes with a discussion of the challenges that remain, including the problems of rib falls and coal bursts.INTRODUCTIONPillar recovery has always been an integral part of underground coal mining in the US. When room-and-pillar methods are employed, large blocks of coal in the form of pillars are initially left in place to support the weight of the overburden. Unless these pillars are subsequently recovered, the coal they contain will never be mined."

A utilização de resíduos industriais é dificultada, na maioria das vezes, pela presença de determinados elementos, como por exemplo, o ferro, justificando assim a sua remoção. Dentro deste contexto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a sulfatação de um resíduo proveniente da flotação de um minério de ferro e subsequente lixiviação deste resíduo sulfatado. A composição mineralógica da amostra inicial foi obtida por DRX e MEV sendo possível identificar quartzo (SiO2), hematita (Fe2O3) e muscovita (KAl2Si3AlO10(OH,F)2). De acordo com a análise química, os teores dos elementos principais foram: Fe (12,65%), S (4,02%), e Al (0,62%). Na sulfatação, realizada à 250ºC durante 4 horas, foi estudada a influência da relação ácido sulfúrico/amostra (0,1:1; 0,2:1; 0,7:1; 0,8:1; 0,9:1 e 1:1) na extração do ferro. A lixiviação foi conduzida com 5% de sólidos do material sulfatado, sendo avaliada a interferência da temperatura de lixiviação (25°C e 90°C) e do tempo de duração dos ensaios (15min, 30min, 60min, 120min, 180min e 240min). Pelos resultados obtidos observou-se que o tempo de lixiviação foi um parâmetro insignificante. A máxima extração de ferro foi encontrada sulfatando o resíduo na relação ácido/amostra 1:1 e posteriormente realizando a lixiviação deste resíduo sulfatado a 90°C por 30 minutos, alcançando 85,64% de extração do Fe.

Glacial lake sediments or glaciolacustrine deposits form a significant portion of the Canadian, Scandinavian and Russian landscapes. Furthermore, 50 per cent of the Archean volcanic belts within the Canadian Shield area are covered wholly or in part by these deposits. Because of the high electrical conductivity and low hydraulic conductivity of these compact sediments, the application of geophysical (electrical) and geochemical techniques in such areas becomes a difficult task. The presence of these sediments has therefore hampered exploration for metallic sulphide deposits in some of the most important metallogenic environments of Canada. Similar problems exist in some tropical countries, such as Australia, where the overburden may be very conductive. In this paper, the extent and provenance of the glaciolacustrine deposits within the Canadian Shield are described. The geochemical and geophysical factors that hinder exploration in the clay belts are reviewed, with case histories of successful and unsuccessful applications of some of these techniques. The most successful geochemical technique used within glacial clay belts is the sampling of lodgement till beneath the clay cover, and the analysis of the heavy mineral fraction of that till. Surficial sampling has not been successfully applied. Some geophysical techniques, more specifically electromagnetic and magnetic induced-polarization techniques, have detected mineralization beneath substantially deep clay or saline overburden layers. Some suggestions have been made, such as the use of anions in hydrogeochemical surveys and the use of wide-band multi-frequency EM systems. When implemented, they will hopefully make the current geochemical and geophysical methods more effective in exploration for base metal sulphides within clay-covered terrains.

Alternating current electrocoagulation (AC/EC) may be an alternative to chemical coagulation in the thickening of tailings in the mineral, coal and petroleum industries. In the current study, ground silica (d50 as received, 20 µm) served as the model tailings solid with characteristically poor settling behavior. Its natural initial settling rate was 1.6 x 10-3 cm/min. This paper discusses the indirect application of AC/EC via aluminum electrodes to the enhancement of the settling behavior of the silica. ?Indirect AC/EC? means that the silica was coagulated upon dispersion in water that had been treated by AC/EC. The effect of AC/EC retention time on settling behavior is examined and the water chemistry is analyzed. Test results show that the initial settling rate of silica was enhanced by a factor of 4,000 at its maximum of 6.4 cm/min, under the conditions employed. Settling enhancement was achieved upon contact between the AC/EC-treated water and the silica, and the enhanced initial settling rate was dictated by the floc size. The aluminum dosage increased with AC/EC retention time, reaching a maximum concentration that was equivalent to 13.1% of that predicted by Faraday?s law. Complex aluminum ions are considered to have adsorbed onto the silica surface and an adsorption mass ratio of 0.3 mg Al/g silica was the most effective in enhancing settling behavior. Owing to pH change or slow kinetics, aluminum hydroxide precipitation did not lower the ion product ([Al3+][OH-]3) below the KSP of 6.3 x 10-32.

The stability and integrity of protective coal pillars between the longwall working face and development roadways are greatly affected by the mining activities such as the development face advancing or retreat mining. Due to underground strata pressure, the coal pillar cracks could be further developed and then the air leakage passages (mainly cracks) could be produced greatly. The air circulation caused by the atmospheric pressure difference between the two sides of the coal pillar may also provide suitable conditions for the possible spontaneous combustion of the residual coal in the mine gob. In this paper, a typical the protective coal pillar in a Chinese coal mine is studied. The deformation and stress of coal pillars during the mining process of longwall working face are simulated by using FLAC3D. The displacement and strain of coal pillars are analyzed. Two indexes, the linear fracture rate (LFR) and area fracture rate (AFR), are introduced to characterize the development of internal cracks’ development within coal pillars. By using field measurement, the air leakage intensity distribution due to coal pillar cracks is obtained; the equation of air leakage resistance of coal pillar under the influence of mining is derived. Then, the possible location of large air leakage of coal pillar is determined, which can be used as guidelines to study the possibilities of coal spontaneous combustions happening in pillar or mine gob. The research results help to control such potential hazards in advance.

The planning, construction, and monitoring of underground storage facilities is a key factor in meeting upcoming challenges as part of the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables. Therefore, the many years of knowledge and expertise in ground control gained from coal mining are highly valuable for new mining and storage operations. For such applications, our previous work examined cavity registration, combining structure from motion and LiDAR through a case study in a former lead ore mine. Building on this, the results of this recent case study are discussed regarding the possible application in sites for nuclear waste disposal in Germany including a view on the situation in the United States. Photogrammetric methods are particularly suitable as part of long-term monitoring, which relies on both precise survey results and a large variety of detailed visualization. In order to gain a better understanding of the resulting application potential for holistic monitoring, both existing repositories sites in Germany and ones yet to be found are examined. This search and selection process for high-level nuclear waste disposal is studied in detail together with rules resulting from the (German) mining law, regulations, and other guidelines. Hereby, key requirements of photogrammetric products like oriented images, point clouds, and three-dimensional (3- D) models are identified for different case studies. The findings on accuracy and integrity of the generated models are not only of interest for future repository sites or underground pumped storage power plants, but also offers various possibilities for underground mining of coal and other commodities.

This paper focuses on the dissolution of various Manganese based compact additions into liquid Magnesium. The experimental procedure employed cylindrical compacts with various Manganese compositions. The various temperatures of the additions and the Magnesium bath were measured simultaneously during the immersion of the additions into Magnesium bath. The exothermicity level of these additions during their dissolution into liquid Magnesium was determined. The relation of the exothermicity level with the dissolution kinetics was also examined. In addition, SEM and EDX work was conducted for additions, which were withdrawn from the Magnesium bath. Finally, the recovery of these additions was estimated by taking samples from the Magnesium bath and conducting ICP analyses.

"Inter-aquifer leakage due to fractures caused by coal seam gas extractions or longwall mining is an important issue for both the gas and coal industries. Currently, predicting stress induced macro-porosity associated with hydraulic fracturing, depressurisation via dewatering or collapse of overlying seams to infill a void left by longwall mining, is problematic. If fractures can be located the fracture can be sealed. Locating fractures is difficult. The non-geophysical approaches to locate fractures has been to consider the mixing of different waters, particularly that of more recent shallower groundwater with older deeper groundwater, via differences in radio-isotopes integrated with geochemical models to predict likely mixing of waters. This approach is applicable under appropriately complex settings; however, it is an expensive technique and is based on the assumption that the daughter isotopes are equally non-reactive which may not always be the case.Potentially a cheaper and faster technique is to consider integrating geochemistry (mineral weathering) and hydrogeology. The chemistry of groundwater, controlled by the weathering of primary rock?minerals and?formation of secondary minerals, can not only be differentiated between geological strata but also within strata as different stages in weathering results in differing impacts on water quality (ie different reactants).Field analysis of pH, electrolytic conductivity (EC), oxidation reduction potential (ORP) and dissolved carbon dioxide together with laboratory analysis of dissolved constituents characterise the chemistry of the water. Collection of rock samples at the time of drilling for bore installation can provide the (only) opportunity to assess the media in which the groundwater resides and migrates through. An assessment of aquifer matrix chemical makeup, via bulk sample chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and petrographic analysis can achieve this.The chemistry of groundwater is dependent on the water velocity. Water at deposition and post-diagenesis dissolution of minerals by hydrolysis and oxidation will result in equilibria of the dissolved phase with the solid phase. Post-depositional fractures caused by either tectonic activity or weathering alter the rate of weathering and thereby the geochemistry. Slow water flow in microfractures results in water in equilibrium with the rock minerals. Faster flow in larger fractures results in water being in disequilibria with rock minerals.Fractures can alter groundwater chemistry by two pathways: changing groundwater velocity, which changes the rate of hydrolysis or oxidation mixing water from different geological strata.Both pathways cause subtle changes in the water chemistry.It is however, the dissolved phase chemical data, which can be observed over time at individual locations and/or at a point in time along a flow path, which allows the hydrogeologist to ælook up-gradientÆ and locate the zone of leakage. Hence, influences on rock/groundwater chemistry, from anthropogenic sources to natural mixing of waters, can be assessed via appropriate interpretation of geochemistry, hydrogeochemistry and flow data.This paper will use the example of the geochemical and hydrogeological characterisation of aquifers within the Hawkesbury and Bulgo Sandstone of the Southern Coalfields to the south of Sydney in New South Wales to demonstrate this approach.CITATION:Stuckey, M and Mulvey, P, 2013. Salt from Great Salt Lake was probably used by the Native Americans prior to the Jim Bridger Expedition to the lake in 1824-25, and was used by the region's early explorers and trappers after that time. From the arrival of the Mormon pioneers in 1847, salt has been produced from Great Salt Lake, starting first with the collection of crude salt from along its shores, and later by boiling down the lake's brine to obtain crystalline salt. Since these early beginnings, salt production from the lake has become a substantial commercial enterprise. Since the early 1960s, research and development have led to the economic production of potassium sulfate, magnesium metal, chlorine gas, magnesium chloride products, and nutritional supplements. Many of the salt-production techniques and equipment that were developed prior to 1964 are still being used today. Sodium sulfate has been produced, but is no longer marketed. Morton Salt, Cargill Salt, and IMC Salt currently extract sodium chloride, which is precipitated during the early stages of evaporation when the brine concentration reaches saturation, or about 26 to 27 percent total dissolved solids. Magnesium Corporation of America produces magnesium metal and chlorine gas, and IMC Kalium Ogden Corporation produces potassium sulfate, as well as magnesium chloride brine and flake products. These salt, gaseous, and metallic products are processed from the sodium-chloride-saturated, high-magnesium-chloride brines, and from the potassium and magnesium salts that are precipitated from the lake brine after it has been further concentrated. One obstacle to salt production is the fluctuating level of Great Salt Lake. In 1983, the lake level began a dramatic rise from an elevation of 4,200 feet (1,280.16 m) to its historic high of 4.211.85 feet (1,283.77 m) in 1986-87 (uncorrected USGS provisional lake-level records). The State of Utah employed flood-control measures, including breaching the Southern Pacific Railroad causeway in 1984, and pumping lake water to a shallow basin west of the lake in 1987. During the high-water years, the lake's mineral-extraction industries faced many challenges including the need to raise dikes to prevent flooding of facilities, broken dikes which resulted in the inundation of solar ponds, and dealing with the lake's greatly reduced brine salinities which resulted in lower annual salt and concentrated-brine production. The years following the record-high lake levels have been a time of adaptation, innovation, and change for Great Salt Lake industries. After its solar ponds were flooded in 1986, AMAX, Inc. built a new solar-pond complex near Knolls, and used the concentrated brines from the West Pond, generated by the State's West Desert Pumping Project. Great Salt Lake Minerals built a 21-mile-long (33.8 km) open, underwater canal, called the Behrens Trench, to convey concentrated brines from a new, remote solar pond on the west side of the lake to the east side of the lake, to help increase its production of sulfate-of-potash. There were also numerous changes in corporate ownership and production-facility locations.

Assuring ground control safety in many mining and tunneling projects depends, at least in part, on an understanding of in situ stress conditions that will be encountered. Yet it is rarely practical to conduct more than a very limited number of stress measurements. Stresses along the route of a proposed excavation are typically interpolated from available measurements, often assuming a linear variation of stress with depth (or elevation). However, projects where multiple stress measurements are conducted often report more complex variations of in situ stress, usually in apparent relationship to geologic structures. These structures often include lithologies of contrasting elastic properties. A method is proposed for estimating stresses in these cases by first back-calculating regional loads from available stress measurements and then modeling the distribution of stress throughout the rock mass. The method has been successfully applied to a set of in situ stress measurements from the Coeur d’Alene Mining District of northern Idaho, USA. Results provided new insights into district stress conditions and the distribution of rockburst hazards along mine drifts and between various mines. This success should transfer readily to suitable deep tunneling projects.

"INTRODUCTION The BeVan quartz crystal prospect in the Indian Creek mining district of Lemhi County, west-central Idaho, was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines 3/ on July 9, 1943. As quartz crystals possessing peizoelectric properties were on the critical list of strategic war minerals, further exploration of the deposit was recommended. The Bureau of Mines exploration began in December 1943 and continued through January 1944. Additional trenching was completed during May and June 1944. This report presents the data obtained by this exploration.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. In This Chapter [Methane ignition as initiation source for much larger secondary coal dust explosions Rock dusting requirements to prevent coal dust explosions Dangers of hybrid mixtures of methane and coal dust] Although methane explosions are dangerous, those that involve coal dust are even more so. If exploding methane disperses and ignites the coal dust that has accumulated on the mine ribs and floor, the burning coal dust immeasurably increases the strength of the explosion. Such methane-dust explosions are prevented by inerting the coal dust in a way that prevents the exploding methane from igniting it. This chapter discusses the dust hazard and how it is pre-vented in U.S. coal mines. METHANE IGNITION AS INITIATION SOURCE FOR MUCH LARGER SECONDARY COAL DUST EXPLOSIONS The typical scenario for coal mine explosions starts with the ignition of a flammable methane-air atmosphere near the face. The turbulent winds from the primary methane explosion then disperse the coal dust. If there is insufficient rock dust (usually limestone), a secondary coal dust explosion then propagates throughout large sections of the mine. These scenarios have been studied extensively at the Bruceton Experimental Mine (BEM) and the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) of the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. The minimum quantity of methane required to initiate a coal dust explosion was studied in 1930 in the BEM [Rice et al. 1933; Nagy 1981] and then later in the LLEM, whose cross-sectional area (130 ft2) is over twice that of the BEM [Sapko et al. 1987a]. Studies conducted in the BEM closely simulated conditions that existed in operating mines in the early 20th century. The later tests in the 20-ft-wide entries of the LLEM simulated the geometries of modern mines with advanced roof support technology. The data from the BEM tests show that 13 ft3 was the minimum quantity of methane at the face that, when ignited, would disperse and ignite coal dust. In the BEM, this amount of methane was mixed with air to form a total flammable volume of about 140 ft3 of a 9% methane-in-air mix-ture. In the wider entries of the LLEM, about 37 ft3 of methane was required to disperse pure coal dust and start a self-sustained coal dust explosion. This amount of methane was mixed with

Peru is a mineral hot spot in the world today. Newmont is in the exploratory phase of this mining cycle, a phase full of optimism and expectations. But exploration is high risk. There will be successes but also failures. Many foreign companies will come and go. But it is the responsibility of the mining industry leadership of Peru and the government to continue to foster an environment conducive to investment. This is the time of year companies begin planning their next annual report. Last year, Newmont’s was called “new horizons.” It highlighted the company’s global expansion into Peru, Uzbekistan and Indonesia. Now, projects that were only on the horizon a year ago are moving into production. So “turning opportunity into gold” may be this year’s theme.

A variety of systems and techniques exist to support deep excavations where sloping is not feasible. This paper will explore an example project involving the use of pre-engineered hydraulic bracing systems to support sheet pile walls. Challenges on site that drove the final design include a high water table, irregular excavation geometry, and underground obstructions. The hydraulic system, connected by pins and not requiring welds, allowed for quick deployment and the modularity to change as required due to unforeseen site conditions.

MY first Nevada City mining reminiscence is one of seeing Capt. Thomas Mein, over 52 years ago, in the old Wyoming mill on Deer Creek about a mile below the town of Nevada City. Captain Mein was then superintendent of the Wyoming mine, where the old fashioned Cornish pump was used, as well as hurdy-gurdy water wheels for power. This mill was one of the typical, up-to-date mills of that time and consisted of stamps, fed by Chinese hand feeders, who also cobbed the ore down to a small enough size to be fed into the mortars. Stamps at that time were of light weight and crushed about one ton to one and a half tons to the stamp, the pulp going over plates, then into sluices with self-raising gates. When a sluice became full the pulp was shut off and directed into the parallel sluice, also with a self-raising gate. The concentrate thus collected in the sluice was shoveled out and carried to Cornish buddles and there cleaned up, preparatory to being sent to a local custom chlorination works.
