In the last 50 years there have been tremendous improvements in equipment used in development on underground mines. Compressed air powered jacklegs have been replaced by high powered electro-hydraulic drifters on sophisticated drill jumbos and load haul dump units have taken over from small shovels and rail cars.Despite the increase in power applied in key parts of the development cycle, average advance rates have fallen and costs have increased. The factor that is most often regarded as the main contributor to slowing advance rates is increased support requirements. Whilst there is no denying that the drive to improve safety has resulted in the requirement for more bolting and the installation of a skin support (mesh or shotcrete), this is not the only factor.Within the industry as a whole, many of the basic principles of development appear to have been lost over time. This paper looks at a historical case study and discusses some of the features of old development cycles that are no longer in use. This highlights some of the basics that appear to have been forgotten. These may be indicators to what may provide improvements in the conventional drill and blast development cycle.CITATION:Ross, I T, 2014. This paper addresses a gap in longwall multi-seam interactions and their predictions, providing a case study for future multi-seam operations for both anticipated conditions and a method for understanding the changes in stress regime. Multiple panels were modelled with the results analysed and compared to panel experiences to validate the parameters and properties. The software chosen (LaModel) is a numerical modelling package designed to model stresses and displacements on thin deposits. It utilises a displacement-discontinuity variation of the boundary-element method and has been used extensively throughout both the United States and Australia in multi-seam operations. Analysis of the results demonstrates a clear correlation with the above workings and regions of significant strata instability. This provides the opportunity going forward to analyse new models and incorporate into mine planning and geotechnical designs. Continuous site-based assessment should be undertaken at multi-seam operations to better understand and quantify likely vertical stress levels within the workings. With a detailed analysis of models prior to extraction and a review of models post extraction. Further research is required as LaModel is limited to vertical stress and it is likely that interactions impact both the horizontal and shear stress regime. 3-dimensional modelling could further assist in this understanding, combined with a thorough stress monitoring regime. In todayÆs marketplace, with high metals prices, many operations are faced with the challenge of improving recovery in the particle size ranges which are normally difficult to recover. This presentation focuses on the various methods used to alter the flow dynamics in a mechanical flotation cell, thereby improving metallurgical results. Modern computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools have been used in the design phase, with subsequent validation at the plant. Some of the validated variables include mixing profile, power draw and local air hold-up. This presentation underlines how modern CFD analysis can be used to screen and select different approaches before commencing costly trial-and-error experiments at plant scale. Two methods of affecting flow dynamics are discussed û firstly, by altering the geometry of the rotor-stator area and, secondly, by fitting additional features in the tank. The rotor-stator area can be modified to provide more concentrated turbulent kinetic energy or, respectively, to provide more pumping efficiency with less attrition. The tank can be fitted with various additional features, aimed to create different particle suspension profiles. The benefit of both methods is that they can be applied not only to newly installed flotation technology, but also to existing plant cells, thus enabling potential improvement in the mixing profiles, solids suspension, tank sanding and metallurgical performance. Results of several sitesÆ tests are discussed in terms of flow variables measurement as well as metallurgy. This paper demonstrates the effects of different flow dynamics on the mixing profiles and metallurgical results of existing mechanical flotation cells.

A laboratory mineral-dressing investigation of manganese ore from the Martin mine, Independence County, Ark., succeeded in recovering ferrograde manganese products. Sintered flotation concentrates analyzing 40.7 and 41.4 percent manganese at overall recoveries of 54.6 and 47.7 percent, respectively, were produced from preconcentrated feed, Preconcentration of the ore for flotation included treatment by magnetic separation and by a combination of magnetic separation and heavy-medium processing. The mineral-dressing study of the Martin mine rhodochrosite ore was part of a general program of the Bureau of Mines to develop domestic sources of strategic minerals, including manganese. Several such potential sources of manganese exist in the Batesville, Ark., district, one of which is represented by the Martin mine. Although the Martin mine area has not been delimited with respect to total reserve tonnage, it is considered to be one of the more important occurrences of manganese in the district. It is estimated that several 100,000 tons of manganese carbonate ore are present in this and similar properties.

Since 1948, ValeÆs Matte Separation Plant has been successfully using magnetic separation and froth flotation to separate the copper sulfide, nickel sulfide and Ni-Cu metallic alloy contained in Bessemer matte for downstream processing. Though some equipment upgrades have been performed over the years, the flow sheet has generally remained unchanged since the early 1970s. The need to improve metallurgical performance led to the trial of a scalping flotation column to produce a final copper concentrate ahead of the cleaner circuit feed to take advantage of a high degree of copper mineral liberation, reduce cleaner-recleaner circulating loads and decrease the associated loss of selectivity. Plant results indicated that 50 per cent of copper contained in the rougher concentrate could be recovered at final grade target. Results indicate that up to a 1.5 per cent increase in copper recovery to copper concentrate was achieved during the scalper trial due to a reduction in the generation of fine chalcocite which has historically been observed to report to flotation tailings due to surface contamination. The Yabulu refinery of Queensland Nickel Pty Lld near Townsville now imports more than three million wet tonnes per year of nickel laterite ore from New Caledonia and Indonesia, making it the largest importer of any commodity in Australia. The project has illustrated that importing untreated bulk ore and re-exporting high value products makes good economic sense for the company and the nation.The economics of this exercise were considerably enhanced in 1994 by changing the project's principal product from nickel-oxide sinter to refined high-purity nickel metal. It is one of the few operations in the world where nickel ore is transformed to nickel metal at a single site.Several novel technological processes were developed at Yabulu and incorporated into the refinery to allow this product transition to occur. By utilising internally developed technology the new processes were installed at a capital cost of less than $10 million. It is unique for a large nickel producer to change completely the quality of its entire product range many years after the plant was constructed and considerable attention to marketing the new products has been required.The changes have meant that the project is no longer limited to selling lower-value oxide sinter to a relatively small number of large stainless steel mills. In the past year sales of the new high purity nickel metal products have expanded to include a broad range of international customers in the special alloy, foundry and chemical industries.

This paper examines the relevant theory, experience, and past practices relating to development mining near gas or oil wells. It addresses setback distance for both coal and stone room-and-pillar mining. This study also involved a review of accident reports involving well interceptions and downhole well surveys. It provides technical considerations for decisions regarding safe setback distances for development mining throughout the United States. The study’s scope is limited to mining near active or inactive (i.e., non-producing, abandoned or inadequately plugged) wells with known surface locations.

"In blasting the explosion of the high explosives charge is initiated by means of a detonator. Consequently the successful operation of the whole system is, ab initio dependent upon the suitability and efficiency of the detonator used. A considerable number of methods for testing the efficiency of detonators have been devised. In a previous publication*** of the Bureau of Mines many of these were discussed after having been classified as direct and indirect methods.In 1910, W. O, Snelling, then explosives chemist of the Bureau, devised a direct method which depends on the extent to which a hard brittle material of uniform granulation, such as quartz sand, is pulverized by the explosion of the detonator when imbedded in it, and, as a container in which to carry out the tests, he devised the vessel known as the Bureau of Mines sand-test bomb No. 1. A brief mention of his work was made in a paper presented to the Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania.****Later Storm and Cope made a very extended investigation of this method using sand-test bomb No, 1. Their paper***** contains a detailed, illustrated, description of sand-test bomb No. 1, with precise specifications of the sand and a minute account of the technique followed, together with a discussion of the data they obtained from the tests in this bomb of 112 detonators representing each of the grades from We, 3 to No. 10, inclusive. "Load tests were carried out to examine the ultimate bearing capacity of short, large diameter bored piles in connection with the construction of a multistory building on the Arabian Gulf in Kuwait. Testing included 0.45 m, 1.0 m, and 1.2 m piles installed through loose sand into a bearing stratum consisting of very dense cemented sands. All tests were carried out to failure. The base resistance and shaft friction were calculated using the Meyerhof method for a layered soil profile. The method employs the standard penetration test N-values. The results indicate that the piles are end bearing piles with a great portion of the pile capacity due to base resistance. The mobilized skin friction is small. The calculated pile capacities were very close to the measured values with the maximum difference not exceeding 10%.INTRODUCTIONShort, large diameter bored piles are used with increasing frequency for heavy structures in Kuwait, and the Gulf region where ground conditions indicate loose deposits of calcareous sands. The piles range in length from 8 m to 15 m with their base located in the dense-to-very dense, cemented sand bearing deposit. The design of these piles requires knowledge of the skin friction and point resistance in these soils. While field tests on driven piles are available (Ismael 1989, Ismael 1999), field test data on large diameter bored piles installed through loose calcareous sands into dense-to-very dense cemented or partially cemented sands are very limited at present. The results of three load tests carried out recently on bored piles at one site in Kuwait have become available. In these tests the failure load was either reached or can be extrapolated from the test results. It is important to examine and analyze the test results for the benefit of the geotechnical research and design engineers.This paper presents the soil conditions, pile installation details, and the pile load test data at the test site located in Shuwaikh, Kuwait. The site is facing the Arabian Gulf. Test results were directly analyzed and the point resistance, and skin friction were calculated. The ultimate capacities of the piles were calculated and compared with the measured values. The influence of the pile diameter on the settlement at ultimate and at working loads is examined"

"Slope performance monitoring, dependable operational practices and ongoing collection of geologic data in openpit slopes all provide valuable information for quantifying potential steepening of subsequent slopes. Mining at the Goldstrike openpit has been ongoing since the early 1980s, having its share of slope instabilities. In areas where slopes have remained stable, consideration has been made for potential slope steepening of final walls.While technology can be efficient, interesting for collecting needed data, slope design fundamentals based on that data can be applied to create much added value.With the proper available equipment, steepening of bench face angles via presplit blasting is not an uncommon method for steepening of interramp slope angles. As an alternative at Goldstrike, the commonly used Modified Ritchie Criteria for empirical catch bench width has been adjusted, resulting in quantified, rock-specific formulas for bench width and rock fall berm placement. The result is an inter-ramp slope angle increase of 2° on a 305- m (1,000-ft) high slope, without the necessary purchases and procedural changes that would be required for presplit drilling and blasting. The result has shown significant net benefits through reduction in mined waste tons and an increase in gold reserves.LocationThe Goldstrike openpit is located in the Great Basin, on the northern end of the Carlin Trend gold belt in northeastern Nevada (Fig. 1). The mine has produced more than 1.2 kt (43 million oz) of gold during the past 30 years."

"A comparison between hydrogen-diffusion-based micro-porosity formation and growth behaviour of two important aluminium foundry alloys, B206 (Al-Cu) and A356 (Al-Si-Mg) is presented in this paper. Specifically, the predicted pore size and pore fraction distribution of these two alloys resulting from directional solidification and identical hydrogen concentration are investigated numerically based on a model proposed by Yao et al. (2011. Met. & Mat. Tran. A. 42A, 4137–4148). This model takes into consideration the initial hydrogen content in the melt, the cooling rate, the partitioning of hydrogen between the solid and liquid phases, and the evolution in solid fraction with temperature. Due to different alloy chemistries, the activity of hydrogen in B206 and A356 are quite different, as are the solidification range and the resulting solidification microstructure. Being a primary alloy, B206 has dendritic microstructure and solidifies over nearly 135°C (505–641°C), whereas A356 contains fifty percent eutectic microstructure, and solidifies over 80°C (533–613°C). This allows a very different behaviour of micropores i.e. the effective pore radius in B206 is quite a bit lower as compared to A356, as is the pore number density. The evolution of local hydrogen concentration in liquid metal is analysed and compared for both the alloys.INTRODUCTION Over the past decades, the demand for materials with enhanced strength-to-weight ratios has significantly increased in the aerospace and automobile industries in order to improved fuel efficiency. For many automotive components, particularly shape castings, the trend is towards replacing ferrous alloys with aluminium alloys. The increase in the use of Al is primarily due to its low density, about one-third that of steel, and its relatively good strength that allows for weight reduction without reducing performance. Presently, Al-Si based alloys (e.g. A356) are the most prevalent due to their good mechanical performance in strength-to-weight ratio and excellent castability (Atwood et.al., 2000). However, superior mechanical properties can be achieved using Al-Cu alloys. For example, the alloy B206 offers a higher strength while retaining excellent ductility (Poirier et.al., 1987)."

"Microseismic monitoring provides insight into the location and extent of rock-mass fracturing induced by cave mining, enabling interpretation of the cave profile and validation of predictive numerical models. Source location uncertainties can lead to misinterpretation of the inferred characteristics of the fracture network. One principal source of uncertainty is the velocity model used to invert the location algorithm. Large-scale 3D numerical models of modulus changes across a caved mass can represent such complexities in the location algorithms, allowing more accurate interpretation of the microseismic activity. A Northparkes mine case study applies this advanced approach to microseismic data interpretation.RÉSUMÉ Le suivi microsismique fournit des renseignements sur la localisation et l’étendue des fractures de la masse rocheuse induites par l’exploitation par blocs foudroyés; cela permet d’interpréter le profil de la chambre foudroyée et de valider les modèles prédictifs numériques. Les incertitudes quant à la localisation de la source peuvent conduire à des mésinterprétations des caractéristiques inférés du réseau de fractures. Une des principales sources d’incertitudes est le modèle de vitesse utilisé pour inverser l’algorithme de localisation. Des modèles numériques tridimensionnels à grande échelle des changements du module d’élasticité à travers une masse foudroyée peuvent représenter de telles complexités dans les algorithmes de localisation, permettant ainsi une interprétation plus juste de l’activité microsismique. Une étude de cas à la mine Northparkes applique cette approche avancée à l’interprétation des données de microsismicité."

A teoria de Kubelka-Munk é bastante genérica e abrangente. A sua aplicabilidade já foi estudada nas mais diversas áreas, como tintas especiais [1], plásticos [2,3], produtos farmacêuticos [4] e alimentícios [5], e também no caolim [6-8]. A partir da teoria pode se relacionar a reflectância difusa com a função de Kubelka-Munk É também notável que carvões com elevados teores de cinza possuem propriedades colorimétricas diferentes de carvões com baixos teores de cinza. Em função dessa notável diferença acredita-se poder quantificar a quantidade de cinzas a partir da reflectância em diversos comprimentos de onda. Para isso foi elaborado um roteiro de retirada da amostra e confecção de pastilhas de carvão pulverizado onde foram medidos a reflectância e o percentual de cinzas. A partir dessas medidas foi possível a obtenção de equações que modelam a função de Kubelka-Munk em função do percentual de cinzas. Apesar do baixo número de amostras coletadas foi possível se obter funções de Kubelka-Munk que se encaixaram nos dados coletados. Por fim, foi possível concluir que há possibilidade de inferir o teor de cinzas de carvão por meio da reflectância.

"Geo-sensing is the ability to routinely measure or infer rock properties at a range of scales using non-destructive scanning devices. These devices can provide information and data flows to support integrated decision making across the minerals value chain. Geo-sensing has been used for many years in minerals exploration using technologies such as satellite imaging and airborne geophysics but to date the use of sensing technologies in between the mine and mill has been very limited. The aim of this research is to develop new mineral sensing technologies that can enable grade engineered ore streams through the rejection of low value gangue or deleterious elements either in the pit or during transfer to the mill. This paper focusses on the research and development being carried out by the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC ORE) and its associated members on new sensing technologies. At the start of their development these technologies were classified on the Technology Readiness Level scale at 3 (TRL3), equivalent to a proof of concept. Laboratory testing and design is aimed at progressing these sensing technologies to TRL5 which is ready for testing at an end users site. New data obtained during the laboratory testing and design phases are presented in the paper demonstrating performance specifications such as detection limits and measurement speed which can be used to infer the pod size of gangue that can be rejected at scale. Grade Engineering® and coarse gangue rejection are considered as key drivers for the mining industry to address the higher mining, processing and environmental costs associated with ore bodies with declining grades. This is an industry wide problem and the development of mineral sensors is seen as key enabling technologies for Grade Engineering® and coarse gangue rejection. The technologies presented in this paper enhance value through early decision making of ore quality and improve the overall resource value case through improved grade and throughput engineering."

"Following initial discovery in 1991, BHP Billiton Diamonds Inc. opened Canada’s first diamond mine, the EKATI Diamond Mine (EKATI) in the Northwest Territories on October 14, 1998. Four short years later, on November 29, 2002, saw the opening of North America’s first underground diamond mine, the Koala North mine. Nestled between the original Panda open pit and the new Koala pit, which is in the early stages of production, Koala North represents the only underground kimberlite mining venture in Arctic conditions outside the new underground mines being developed by ALROSA in the Yakutsk region of eastern Russia. Extensive underground kimberlite mining has been practiced in the Republic of South Africa for much of the 20th century and continues today.Underground mining represents a key component of the long-term business plan for EKATI. As various open pits reach their economic limit, continued recovery of high-value ore at depth is dependent upon the ability to productively mine the kimberlite pipes by underground methods. As a function of its location, size, and value, the Koala North pipe is ideally positioned to host the first underground mine at EKATI. Koala North is designed and approved as a learning mine, from which to gain valuable experience in preparation for the potential mining of other larger, higher value pipes by underground methods in the development, the Koala North mine is well into its production ramp-up phase and currently producing at around 1,200 t/day from the first two production levels."

Hydrothermal sulfides were recovered from the16°50?S triple junction area in the North Fiji Basin, at a water depth of ca. 1900 m. The chimney samples can be divided into three groups according to their major metal contents: 1) type 1 (Fe-Cu-rich), 2) type 2 (Fe-Cu-rich with minor Zn), and 3) type 3 (Zn-rich) chimneys. Type 1 chimneys are mainly composed of chalcopyrite and pyrite, and are enriched in elements commonly precipitated under high temperature conditions (> 300°C), such as Cu, Co, Mo, and Se. Type 3 chimneys consist dominantly of sphalerite and marcasite with traces of pyrite and chalcopyrite, and are enriched in elements commonly associated with low temperature (150 to 250°C), such as Zn, Cd, Pb, As, and Ga. Type 2 chimneys show mineralogy similar to that of type 1 chimneys but their metal contents range between type 1 and type 3 samples. Trace element compositions of basaltic rocks indicate that magma generation in the triple junction area was influenced by two different sources: N-MORB and E-MORB. Sulfur and lead isotope patterns of the hydrothermal chimneys show distinct differences between the type 1 and type 3 chimneys. For example, type 1 sulfides are depleted in 34S and have lower Pb isotope ratios compared to type 2 and 3 chimneys. The d34S values (0.4 to 5.6?) of chimney sulfides are typical range of sulfur isotope composition of sediment free mid-ocean ridge hydrothermal system. Type 2 and 3 sulfides show slightly higher d34S values than type 1 sulfides, which can be explained by subsurface boiling of hydrothermal fluids followed by mixing of saline solutions with ambient seawater. Lead isotope compositions of the chimneys indicate that the Pb in type 1 and type 3 chimneys originates from hydrothermal leaching of N-MORB and E-MORB volcanic rocks, respectively. Considering that both these chimneys are located in the same area, our model suggests that type 1 chimneys formed by hydrothermal circulation controlled by an intrusion of N-MORB magma; the fluids were not influenced by boiling during the formation of type 1 chimneys. In contrast, type 3 chimneys are younger and were formed by hydrothermal circulation closely related to E-MORB magma intrusion at shallower depth. The necessary conditions for phase separation of the hydrothermal fluids that formed the type 3 chimneys might result from changed P-T conditions in a shallower high-temperature reaction zone beneath the hydrothermal venting site. Under these conditions the fluid may cross the two-phase boundary for seawater, ensuring subcritical phase separation. The mineralogical and geochemical properties of these chimneys suggest that type 1 and type 3 chimneys were probably black smoker and white smoker, respectively. Type 2 chimneys might be product of low-temperature replacement of type 1 chimneys, which is related to formation of type 3 chimneys.

The Mateen deposit comprises two large spodumene-bearing pegmatite dikes that outcrop along the, side and crest of a hill overlooking 'Rill City in the southern Black Hills of South Dakota. The Bureau of Mines investigated the Mateen deposit as part of a comprehensive study of the lithium mineral-production possibilities in the Black Hills area. The work was undertaken during the second World War, when the demand for certain lithium salts and compounds exceeded the small productive capacity of the industry. During the course of the investigation, the Bureau of Mines took 61 large channel samples from surface trenches, 4 channel samples from a shaft, and 3 from the face of an open cut. In addition, 8 diamond core-drill holes were completed to investigate the attitude of one of the dikes at depth. Metallurgical tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the feasibility of beneficiating spodumene-bearing ores from the Mateen dikes.
