This section of the Minerals Yearbook reviews the minerals industries of 27 countries: the 12 nations of the European Community (Belgium, Dermark/Greenland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom); 6 of the 7 nations of the European Free Trade Association (Austria, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Sweden); Malta; the 8 Eastern European economies in transition (Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Yugoslavia); and the U.S.S.R. Western Europe Western Europe [loosely defined to include the 12 nations of the European Community (EC) and the 7 nations of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA)] is the single largest trading area and consumer of raw materials in the world. If Western Europe was at one time an important mining sector, it has now increasingly relegated the role of supplying minerals for its minerals processing industry to the more minerally endowed countries in North and South America, Africa, and Australia. In this regard, Western Europe is the most important determinant of raw materials consumption (and thus, indirectly, raw materials production). Western Europe has significant reserves of industrial minerals but has limited availability of metalliferous raw materials. It, therefore, imports significant quantities of the latter and ranks along with the United States and the U.S.S.R. in the production of refined metals. Nonetheless, there is an inherent tendency to underestimate the importance of Western Europe in the world of minerals, both as a minerals processor and raw materials buyer. The reason for this is that Western Europe is generally thought of on the basis of individual nations rather than as a whole. Viewed in this limited context, the United States, the U.S.S.R., and Japan appear to dominate the world economy. Viewed as one regional area, however, Western Europe includes the fourth (FRG), fifth (France), sixth (United Kingdom) and seventh (Italy) largest economies of the world, all bordering on one another. With the remaining 15 EC and EFTA countries, Western Europe has a land area approximately 40 % of that of the United States, exceeds the U.S. population by 50 % and has a gross domestic product about the same as that of the United States.

The paper explores the sustainability of the Australian mining industry, and the potential for application of a substitute fuel into existing mining operations. This alternative fuel biodiesel is produced from biological oils and not from refined hydrocarbons like the transport fuel diesel (petrodiesel). The fuel is compatible with all current diesel equipment with little to no modification and has many superior properties. As biodiesel is derived from biological sources it is æcarbon neutralÆ meaning there is no net carbon addition to the atmosphere when the fuel is burned. The current fuel, petrodiesel releases long stored carbon dioxide (CO2) and is of concern to Australian government targets which seek to reduce these emissions. The mining industryÆs unique reliance on petrodiesel is of particular interest when assessing the substitution of biodiesel into underground and open cut operations. The underground benefits of biodiesel see a reduction in the noxious emissions of carbon monoxide and diesel particulate matter, both contaminants which require extensive diluting ventilation to ensure safe levels. As biodiesel is both safer to store due to its higher flash point and produces less exhaust emissions, its occupational health and safety benefits in underground mines is clear. The use of biodiesel in open cut mines benefits the environmental sustainability aspects of the project. The formulation of national targets relating to carbon dioxide emission reductions promotes any measure to reduce CO2 within the mining environment. As the diesel engine is one of the least emission efficient (kWh/tonne CO2) energy sources on-site, its potential for reduction in CO2 at minimal cost is the greatest. By substituting the fuel, significant quantities of site emissions are reduced, thereby achieving the goals of improved site sustainability and the governmentÆs targets to reduce emissions. This aspect of gauging mutually beneficial relationship regarding government interests and mining industry profitability is the underlying outcome for this paper.

"A non-local formulation of the classical continuum mechanics theory called peridynamics is used to study driven dynamic fractures in the near wellbore region. The controlled application of pressure on the inner walls of the borehole can create multiple fractures that initiate from the borehole and propagate radially outwards. The number of fractures and their final length is primarily controlled by the loading conditions and the in-situ stress state. It is the objective of this study to use a novel numerical technique called peridynamics to investigate: 1) the influence of loading conditions on the fracture pattern, and 2) the effect of in-situ stress anisotropy on fracture propagation. In peridynamics, the momentum equation from the classical theory of solid mechanics is replaced with the integro-differential momentum equation of peridynamics. As a result, discontinuities in the body, such as fractures, occur spontaneously. The material is represented by a continuum body with material points that interact non-locally with all other points within a specified distance. Fractures evolve using a damage evolution law, wherein, damage at any point is represented as the ratio of the number of broken bonds in the current configuration to the total number of bonds in the undeformed configuration.Simulations are performed on simplified test cases and the results are compared to relevant experimental and numerical studies found in the literature. It is shown that the loading rate significantly influences the number of fractures initiated from the borehole as well as their extent. Low loading rate produces fewer fractures, whereas, high loading rates produce longer and a greater number of fractures from the borehole. The numerical method successfully predicts the fracture pattern obtained from a wide range of loading conditions. Predictions also indicate that the resultant fractures are shorter when in-situ stress is applied. Numerical results show that the fracture extension is largest in the direction perpendicular to the minimum compressive stress for the range of loading rates used in this study."

The gravity recoverable gold (GRG) parameter reflects liberated gold or gold-dominated composite particles that can be recovered by gravity separation. Recoveries depend upon mineralogy, in situ particle size and the comminution and extraction method used. Any ore bearing >15 per cent of gold greater than 50 ¦m in size is likely to have a GRG component. The principal characterisation methodology applied is the three-stage GRG (3GRG) test, based on a 40 kg to 100 kg sample. An alternative is the single-stage GRG test (SGRG), which is generally based on a 20 kg sample. Experience has shown that GRG values can vary throughout an orebody, particularly within different grade and/or mineralogical domains. Test programs must consider sample frequency and mass. This study demonstrates the variability of GRG results based on different sample masses. Consecutive underground faces on a coarse-gold dominated quartz vein were sampled taking five different masses from each. Each sample was processed using a SGRG approach. Subsequently, each development round was batched through a small gravity production plant. The results show that the small samples understate the plant GRG and show inter-sample variability. Large samples show less variability and a SGRG closer to the plant GRG. A high SGRG broadly correlates to higher gold grades, more coarse gold and larger gold particles. These results are intuitively correct, but indicate the likely challenges of sampling for gold recovery in heterogeneous systems.CITATION:Dominy, S C, 2013. The Pb-Zn ore bodies in the Pine Point district are localized in paleo-solution structures that developed as the result of post-middle Givetian subaerial exposure of the carbonate barrier complex. Sulfides are concentrated in transgressive pale-solution structures that acted as natural bypasses between aquifers and loci for mixing of fluids of different character, one of which contained metals and the other reduced sulfur. Complex ore textures indicate rapid early sulfide precipitation followed by slower sulfide growth. Evidence for both sulfide-carbonate equilibrium and disequilibrium conditions suggest fluctuations in ore fluid composition. District and ore body metal distribution patterns may reflect the nature and movement of mineralizing fluids.

Installing ground support correctly is not an easy task, whether lack of operator training, poor ground conditions or underperforming equipment. Confirming the quality of installation can help with planning and remedial works and help to maintain a safe working environment. A 2?m bolt with 700?mm of encapsulation will pass a 10?t pull test (assuming ground conditions permit); however, it will not provide any data of the unencapsulated length and thus the ability to withstand corrosion. Complimentary testing in the form of non-destructive testing (NDT) can provide factual data that leads to the assessment of the quality of the encapsulation. By improving the quality of the encapsulation, the risk of corrosion is reduced, the ground support durability is improved and hence the asset life is enhanced.This paper presents a case study of a trial using the NDT system RokTel™. Installations of varying quality were installed and tested. The characteristics tested were corrosion, load and free length. These characteristics can be tested and assessed for cable bolts, thread bar bolts and split sets. The aim of this paper is to present NDT testing as a viable method for assessing installation quality and ongoing performance of the ground support.CITATION:Jones, B and Chappell, M, 2014. During a period of twelve months between FY18-19, a series of trials were conducted to compare production drilling accuracy using two different methodologies, and the subsequent impact this had on stope performance (dilution and recovery). Testing was conducted at a series of underground mines in Australia. The drill rig’s existing alignment processes were compared to a new technology system, with the following observations: • The new technology was proven to limit rig alignment error, thereby reducing average blasthole deviation, resulting in an increase in the number of holes drilled within tolerance by up to 160%. • The increased accuracy reduced stope dilution significantly by reducing over-break of subgrade ore, whilst also increasing drilled meters (faster stope-cycle time), reducing the bridged tonnes ratio, and facilitating the capture of previously uneconomical stopes. A cost-benefit analysis extrapolated from each of the trials showed the extent to which the new technology, when applied to production data, reduced average dilution, increased ore recovery as well as general drill and blast productivity. In one such trial, the new technology was proven to have reduced average dilution by net 45.4%, which if applied to a full year’s production data, would result in AUD8.2M additional ore recovered, with AUD4.5M less spent on wasted cost of haulage and processing of diluted ore. As a result, return per tonne would increase 22%, from AUD87 to AUD106. This improvement was maintained over the following 12 months – reducing average dilution from 22% in FY17 to 12.1% in FY19.

Digital modelling of a surface is crucial for Earth science and mining applications for many reasons. These days, high-tech digital representations are used to produce a high-fidelity topographic surface in the form of a digital terrain model (DTM). DTMs are created from 2D data-points collected by a variety of techniques such as traditional ground surveying, image processing, LiDAR, radar, and global positioning systems. At the points for which data is not available, the heights need to be interpolated or extrapolated from the points with measured elevations. There are several interpolation/extrapolation techniques available, which may be categorized based on criteria such as area size, accuracy or exactness of the surface, smoothness, continuity, and preciseness. In this paper we examine these DTM production methods and highlight their distinctive characteristics. Real data from a mine site is used, as a case study, to create DTMs using various interpolation techniques in Surfer® software. The significant variation in the resulting DTMs demonstrates that developing a DTM is not straightforward and it is important to choose the method carefully because the outcomes depend on the interpolation techniques used. In mining instances, where volume estimations are based on the produced DTM, this can have a significant impact. For our data-set, the natural neighbour interpolation method made the best predictions (R2 = 0.969, β = 0.98, P < 0.0001).

PT Freeport Indonesia operates a large copper and gold mining operation near Tembagapura, Papua (formerly, Irian Jaya), Indonesia. This is a remote location with its own set of unique operational characteristics. The mining and concentrating operations typically produce a concentrate containing 2500 tpd of copper and 6000 oz of gold per day from the combined mining of a 45 000 tpd (ore) block cave operation (DOZ Mine) and a 190 000 tpd (ore) open pit mining operation (Grasberg Open Pit). The Grasberg Open Pit mine will be exhausted in 2015 at which time FreeportÆs operations will entirely underground mining methods. The Common Infrastructure Project (CIP) incorporates the elements required for the shift to underground mining at a production rate approaching 200 000 tpd. The AB Adit portion of the CIP will provide deep level access to the Grasberg Block Cave (below the Open Pit), Kucing Liar, Big Gossan, and the Mill Level Zone orebodies. Commencement of the project was September 2003. The Grasberg Block Cave is planned to start production in 2014. This paper provides details on the project scope, innovative contractual framework, advancement of mining methods throughout the life of the operation, equipment selection, manpower selection, training, geological, and socio-political conditions related to the project.

Les ESEE constituent une méthode de suivi scientifique que l?on peut employer pour déterminer la santé des écosystèmes aquatiques (qui peuvent être touchés par l?activité humaine) et l?efficacité des mesures de protection de l?environnement. Les ESEE sont des évaluations scientifiques itératives du poisson, de l?habitat du poisson et des ressources halieutiques. Le programme comporte des phases séquentielles de deux à six ans de suivi, d?interprétation et de compte rendu au cours desquelles la fréquence et le type de suivi dépendent des résultats des études précédentes. Le programme des ESEE pour les mines de métaux est fondé sur un accord conclu à l?unanimité entre les intervenants. Les exigences du programme et les guides techniques connexes ont été élaborés à la suite d?une consultation multilatérale à laquelle ont participé les représentants du secteur privé, du gouvernement et des collectivités. Toutes les mines assujetties au Règlement sur les effluents des mines de métaux (REMM), aux termes de la Loi sur les pê ches, doivent procéder à une ESEE dans le cadre de l?autorisation qu?ils ont reç ue de rejeter des effluents. "The TankCell® 300 forced air flotation cell designed and built by Outotec, with active volume of over 300 m3, was installed at Codelco’s Chuquicamata concentrator in September 2008. After that, a program was conducted, where the new cell was tested against the plant’s existing flotation cells of type TankCell® 160, with an active volume of over 160 cubic meters.Testing program was exhaustive and detailed. Grade-recovery curves for each setup were reported, along with recoveries by particle size. Secondly, operational characteristics like air feed and froth height setpoints, and power consumption are compared side-by-side. As the third topic, gas dispersion characterization included velocity mapping, holdup, bubble size and bubble surface area flux operating range. The fourth area of interest was the retention time distribution (RTD) of the 300 and 160 m3 cells in comparison. A detailed campaign using radioactive tracer tests was conducted to clarify this.All of the investigations mentioned above are reported in separate papers for more detail. The aim of this paper is to collect the key findings, and present them in real terms, always referring to operability and metallurgy of the cells. It is destined for people designing new plants and to those improving and expanding existing ones. The most frequently heard question is: will the new large cells operate at same efficiency as the smaller ones. In short, the answer is: NO. They operate at improved efficiency!INTRODUCTIONIn the last two decades of minerals processing, there have been three dominant trends of development in the flotation technology: equipment scale-up, cell characterization and circuit modeling. Equipment scale-up has been rapid in the past two decades. In the year 1990, the largest flotation cell in use was 50 cubic meters of size. This year, 300 cubic meters is the largest installed cell. Characterization of flotation equipment and circuits is a very popular subject nowadays and has helped many operations to improve their recoveries through better control strategies, for example by using optimized air feed and level control profiles (Gorain, 2005), (Doucet, Gomez, Finch, 2006), or through better maintenance (Coleman, Urtubia, Alexander, 2006). Characterization work is closely linked to circuit modeling. The aim is to produce sufficient amount of data to allow reliable model building. These models are then used to design new circuits and to improve existing ones. So in summary, these three lines of development have slightly different aims – from capital and operational cost to performance optimization. Ultimately, they converge in the same end result – maximizing the profitability of the operation. Following chapters will summarize the extensive test work and scientific studies at Codelco Chuquicamata. The aim was to compare a TankCell® 300 cell, with nominal volume of 300 m3, against two TankCell® 160 machines, with 160 m3 volume in each. The work should yield answers to questions: does the larger cell produce similar results – is the scale-up successful?"

Corus Umuiden, formerly Hoogovens, was the first steel plant in Europe after Voest to introduce oxygen steelmaking. In the decision-making process contacts with Dofasco in Canada about the production of formability steel grades were crucial. In developing oxygen (LD-) steelmaking high liquid steel output rates had to be combined with accurate process control. For ingot casting static models with input control and sampling during interrupted blowing were sufficient to deliver liquid steel within the required carbon, phosphorus, sulphur and temperature windows. Computers were introduced to perform the complicated charge calculations. Continuous casting called for strict control of composition and temperature at process end point and made predictable timing crucial. Dynamic control was introduced based upon sub lance measurements and waste gas analysis. Reliable disposable measurement sensors were developed in a concerted international action. Dissolved oxygen at blow end deteriorated the quality of low carbon aluminium killed steel grades. Blowing gases through the converter bottom improved process kinetics, resulting in lower carbon-oxygen products, yield increase and better phosphorus removal and generated new families of hybrid blowing processes. Introduction of secondary metallurgy facilities such as argon stirring stations, vacuum degassers and ladle furnaces relieved the demands for strict BOF end point control. Desulphurisation of hot metal became standard practice. In regions with scrap shortage hot metal desiliconisation followed by dephosphorisation, was introduced in the blast furnace cast house and hot metal transfer ladles. Later redundant converter vessels were used for pre-treatment, resulting in a two-stage process. The fundamentals of oxygen steelmaking are described and a vision on the future is presented.

The Directive 019 on mineral industry, which was officially adopted in 1989, is the main tool used by the Quebec Ministry of Environment for the environmental evaluation and control of mineral exploitation projects presented for approval. This document contain the environmental guidelines which must be met by all the mineral companies during and after exploitation. The Directive 019 also contain all the information required by the Quebec Ministry of Environment in order to fully analyse the environmental impacts caused by the mineral projects proposed to the Ministry for approval. The proposed modifications of the Directive 019 cover many new topics that were not addressed in prior editions, these include : water recirculation, groundwater protection, tailings management and post exploitation environmental controls.

"Present study is about use of a group of Iron[Fe(III)] Reducing Bacteria (IRB) to convert the goethite (a-FeOOH) present in the original lateritic Nickel ore to magnetite under an anaerobic condition and subsequently release the bound Co(III) and Ni(II) through leaching. The lateritic Nickel ore contains 0.8% Ni, 0.049% Co, 1.92% Cr, 0.32% Mn and 50.2% Fe. An anaerobic dissimilatory Fe(III) reducing bacterial consortium capable of using acetate as carbon source (electron donor) and lateritic ore as terminal electron acceptor, changes the initial light brown color of the ore to dark brown. The change in color is due to the conversion of goethite to magnetite, which was confirmed by XRD. When the IRB treated sample was subjected to both bioleaching and acid leaching, it shows a greater recovery of Nickel and Cobalt values as compared to untreated original lateritic Ni ore. Further a magnetic separation method was used to separate the magnetic part of the treated lateritic ore and subjected to acid- and bio-leaching for better recovery of Nickel and Cobalt.IntroductionIt has been known that micro-organisms have the potential to reduce metals but more recent observations have shown that a diversity of specialist bacteria and archaea can use such activities to conserve energy for growth under anaerobic conditions [12]. Natural Fe(III) oxides are high in surface area and are reactive [1]. Fe (III) oxides adsorb a wide range of metal cations and anions by complexation to surface hydroxyl groups [17], and function as the primary redox buffering solid phase in many sediments and subsurface materials [5].Recently a number of bacteria have been isolated based on their ability to use metal ions, including Fe(III), as electron acceptor under anaerobic conditions. These are capable of producing energy by coupling the oxidation of organic compounds to reduction of Fe(III). Iron[Fe(III)]-Reducing Bacteria (IRB) have been isolated and identified from a wide variety of environments including freshwater and marine aquatic sediments and submerged soil [8]. The biogeochemical cycle of iron is linked to those of the trace metals, as many trace metals coassociate with Fe(III) oxides or reduced iron phases (e.g., magnetite, siderite, or iron sulfide). IRB can utilize Fe(III) oxides as terminal electron acceptors for respiration [18]; thereby reducing all or a fraction of the solid. The reductive portion of the iron biogeochemical cycle in non-phototropic environments (e.g., sediments and subsurface materials) is driven by the direct enzymatic reduction of Fe(III) oxides to Fe(II) by dissimilatory iron reducing bacteria [13,14]."

"The Moffet-Johnston property was investigated by the Bureau of Mines with the object of determining the presence of ore reserves that might be utilized during the war emergency. Preliminary examination was made during May and Juno 1943, as a result of which the Johnston 'tunnel was cleaned out and repaired, the .mime was surveyed, and a small program of exploration was undertaken. This report describes the work performed and presents the data obtained.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts prelimi¬nary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs benefication tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.The chemical and spectrographic analyses were made at Reno, Nov., under the direction of A. C. Rico, acting engineer in charge, Rare and Precious Metals Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines. The ore-dressing tests were under the direction of Rollien R. Wells, metallurgist, at the Salt Lake City laboratories of the Bureau of Mines.The author acknowledges the cooperation and assistance of the lessee of the property, H.R. Hakes, who furnished nine reports and other information.The Moffet-Johnston property is in secs. 2 and 3, T. 3 S., R. 5 W., in the Tidal Wave mining district of Madison County, Montana.The portal of the Johnston adit is near the mouth of Bear Gulch, 9 miles northeast of Twin Bridges, Mont. It is reached by an improved dirt road that serves mining properties farther up Bear Gulch. The Moffet mine and the Mountain View shaft are now accessible from the Bear Gulch road over an access road recently completed by the U. S. Grazing Service. The Grazing Service road has also been supplemented by bulldozer trails built by the Bureau of Mines.An electric-power line extends from the Montana Power Co's substation at Twin Bridges to mines at the head of Bear Gulch and passes within 200 feet of the Johnston portal.The claims of the Moffet-Johnston property were located about 1900. A report by H. V. Winchel, consulting geologist, in 1904 indicates that most of the development on the Johnston adit was completed by that date. At the time of the Winchel report, the Moffet workings had just penetrated the first ore shoot (fig. 4)."

Cylindrical pellets made from graphite and chromite mixtures were reduced in high-carbon ferrochromium melts at 1 600-1 695 degrees C, under an atmosphere of almost pure CO. The reduction rate, as measured by gas evolution, increased with increasing melt temperature and graphite addition and with decreasing pellet diameter or height, although reductant particle size had a very limited effect on kinetics. At a pellet size, heat and mass transfer were significant in controlling the early stages of reduction of large pellets while at chromite grain size, gas diffusion was probably a rate-controlling step. The time required for dissolution of unfluxed pellets into the melts was significantly longer than that for reduction. The Bureau of Hines and industry (mining and private) have studied the placement of hydraulic sandfill in deep-vein mines to identify existing problems and to develop techniques to strengthen the support characteristics of the sandfill. The hydraulic sandfill system, physical properties of typical classified mill tailings, and properties of sandfill modified by various techniques are discussed. Computer analysis has defined the support capability of various sandfills using actual mine field data as a reference base. High-modulus sandfill can provide adequate support in deep-vein mines to alleviate rock and pillar stresses and to reduce rock-burst incidence.

A modified coal flotation characterization procedure, referred to as the Advanced Flotation Washability (AFW) technique, has been developed which, compared to traditional procedures, provides a more accurate prediction of the optimum separation performance achievable by a froth flotation process. The AFW procedure uses a vertically-baffled flotation column which provides enhanced selectivity among particles of varying degrees of hydrophobicity due to a plug-flow environment and an improved carrying-capacity environment. In fact, the separation performance of the traditional procedures was enhanced by increasing the possibility of operating under improved selectivity conditions. The separation performance provided by the AFW procedure was superior to that obtained from multiple cleaning stages using commercially-available flotation columns under both kinetic and carrying-capacity limiting conditions.

Potash production from natural brines of the Bonneville Salt Flats has a comparatively long history dating back to the start of World War I. However, it vas sot until the late 1930&apos;s that a successful commercial potash operation was achieved by a firm known as Bonneville Ltd. While improvements in operating techniques, pond design and equipment have been incorporated as they became available it should he understood that the basic technology developed in the late 30&apos;s and early 1940&apos;s by Bonneville Ltd, for potash production has not been changed significantly. The purpose of this paper is to present a brief review of the history, geology and hydrology of the Bonneville Potash operations and discuss the cur¬rent methods employed for brine collection, solar evaporation and the recovery of potash and other brine chemicals. A detailed study of the hydrogeology of the Bonneville Salt Flats wan made by L. J. Turk,1 Ph.D. thesis for Stanford University in 1969, under the auspices, of Kaiser Chemicals the Industrial Chemicals Division of Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation. Turk&apos;s thesis furnished much of the information presented in this paper.
