This manual provides instructions for installing, operating, and maintaining a protective canopy on the Joy Mfg. Co. loader. These instructions are based upon two actual install .at ions: one made in a mine on loader, model 14BU10-11AH, and one in the factory on model 14BU10- 11AH. The parts list and engineering drawings for the protective canopy are included at the end of the manual. And a discussion of some alternative design concepts is also included. The manual can also be used for retrofitting other loaders with similar protective canopies. Skilled mechanics can determine if the instructions herein would be applicable to the other loaders and can determine any necessary modifications if they are not.

"In 2007 the US Army Corps of Engineers classified the Herbert Hoover Dike in Florida as a Dam Safety Action Classification (DSAC) 1 dam, and started the implementation of one of the largest dam rehabilitation projects in the nation. The construction of the cutoff wall is a key feature of this rehabilitation work to upgrade the dike to current dam safety criteria. The cutoff wall installation is currently being completed on Reach 1, which extends from Port Mayaca to Belle Glade, under a Multiple Task Order Contract based on performance specifications and stringent verification criteria.For the construction of the cutoff wall TREVIICOS selected the self-hardening slurry method. Since the cutoff wall is installed through a layer of highly variable limestone with Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) up to 14,000 psi, the excavation requires the use of the hydromill equipment. This is the first successful application of the hydromill technology with self-hardening slurry in a large scale project in the US. This paper presents the details of the method utilized, the quality control procedures, and the experience gained over seven miles of cutoff wall installed.INTRODUCTIONProject LocationThe Herbert Hoover Dike (HHD) system, around Lake Okeechobee in South Florida, consists of a series of levees, culverts and locks and is approximately 143 miles long (Figure 1).Lake Okeechobee is the second largest freshwater lake in the lower 48 states of the United States. The lake is the primary drinking water source for numerous communities around the lake and to millions of people living along the lower east coast. The lake is also a vital source of irrigation for the agricultural industry in the South Florida region.Lake Okeechobee is 33 miles wide from north to south and 30 miles wide from east to west and has a surface area of 730 square miles. The average water depth of the lake is 9 ft."

The Adra tunnel near Naramata BC experienced a fire in 2010 that burned timber sets within the tunnel and caused severe spalling of rock from the roof and tunnel walls. The nature of the damage is documented and efforts completed to rehabilitate and open a portion of this tunnel to the public are described. The use of shortcrete and rock bolts is a technically and economically superior support system to timber sets as well as being far more fire resistant.

In the search for the development of more "environmentally friendly" and more intensive waste disposal approaches to meet more and more stringent environmental regulations, thermal plasma-based processes? are considered one of the most promising alternatives to well-established technologies such as incineration. This paper presents an overview on the research and development status of thermal plasma-based waste remediation technologies. The properties of thermal plasma are described. Due to its unique feature of high-energy intensity and super high temperature, thermal plasma is particularly capable of destroying organic-containing wastes. Its potential and promising application to waste remediation may include: treatment of incinerator ashes; metallurgical dusts (especially, electric arc furnace dust); medical wastes; radioactive wastes; and other Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) listed hazardous wastes. Many research institutes and vendors have been involved in the development of thermal plasma-based waste treatment-technology encouraged by the cleanup programs supported by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Energy (DoE) and the Department of Defense (000). More recently, thermal plasma-based waste treatment technologies (sometimes called plasma-enhanced pyrolysis) are focused more and more on not only just destroying organic wastes but also on how to practically, and economically recover energy contained in the organic waste materials in addition to the recovery of metals in order to offset the high operating costs.

"The gently-dipping Devonian dolomite beds south of Great Slave lake in northern Canada are nearly every-where concealed by a cover of glacial drift and muskeg. Nevertheless, in 1898 or earlier, four small outcropping areas of dolomite, richly mineralized with lead and zinc sulphides, were discovered. Exploration work performed here up to the end of 1930, included intensive trenching and drilling of the showings, together with mapping and wide-spaced drilling in the surrounding region. This work proved that the discoveries are isolated pockets of mineralization much too small to be commercially valuable by themselves. No evidence of orebodies elsewhere was reported.Meanwhile, mapping by the G.S.C. in the Shield far to the east disclosed major Precambrian faults, some of which can be projected southwesterly (under a cover of Paleozoic sediments) to the vicinity of Pine Point. During the period from 1940 to 1947, consideration was given, by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company Ltd., to evidence of a theoretical possibility that, although apparently dormant in Paleozoic times, these faults may have provided a structural control and a source of ore-bearing solutions in some post-Devonian period. From this, it was postulated that the breaks might have created, in the overlying dolomite, a linear array of orebodies concealed by overburden but lying in a belt of considerable length and in a position predictable within practical limits. A program of drilling designed to test and exploit this specific concept was conducted from 1948 to 1955.he drilling within the new, theoretically-defined search area resulted in the discovery of many lead-zinc ore-bodies, none of which was exposed at the surface. Some of these are large and (as indicated by 1965 production records) very rich. They are situated 1 to several miles distant from, and apparently not connected to, the earlier-known surface discoveries. The drilling also disclosed that the ore, which consists of disseminated sphalerite and galena replacements together with colloform sphalerite and coarse galena cavity fillings, occurs mainly at certain stratigraphic horizons within a large, coarsely-recrystallized dolomite barrier reef. Considerable fracturing and folding was found. It has been suggested that reef development was influenced by post-Precambrian tectonic movements associated with the old faults in the basement complex. The ore may have been deposited by solutions moving from distant sources to favourable structural and chemical environments in or related to the reef.In more recent exploration performed in the course of preparing for mining production, the rate of ore discovery within the same general geological context has been greatly accelerated by the use of new geophysical techniques and drilling equipment. Reserves of 21.5 million tons, averaging 4 per cent lead and 7.2 per cent zinc, were reported in 1965, and production from open pits at the rate of approximately 248,000 tons of concentrates per year is in progress"

The aim of this study was to investigate desulfurization and de-ashing of a mixture of subbituminous coal and gangue minerals by the agglomeration method. For this purpose, experimental studies were conducted on a mixture containing subbituminous coal, pyrite, quartz and calcite. The effects of some parameters that markedly influence the effectiveness of selective oil agglomeration, such as solid concentration, pH, bridging liquid type and concentration, and depressant type and amount, were investigated. Agglomeration results showed that the usage of various depressants (Na2SiO3, FeCI3, corn starch, wheat starch) in the agglomeration medium has a positive effect on the reduction of ash and total sulfur content of agglomerates. It was found that an agglomerate product containing 3.03% total sulfur and 25.01% ash with a total sulfur reduction of 56.71% was obtained from a feed that contained 7% total sulfur and 43.58% ash when FeCI3 was used in the agglomeration medium. Filtered dry stack tailing storage facilities offer many advantages over thickened tailing storage facilities and yet, most of the mining companies still prefer the latter.Some of the advantages of filtered dry stack tailing storage facilities are: increased structural integrity of the tailing storage facility, which is even more critical in areas of high seismicity, close to nearby communities or environmentally sensitive areas; maximised water recovery which is particularly important in arid environments where water is an extremely valuable resource and its supply is regulated; optimised recovery of valuable metals in the process water, avoiding high cyanide concentration going to detoxification (both aspects haven’t been emphasised enough in technical papers on this subject); optimised space to store the tailings in mountainous regions; minimised elevation of embankment height, providing a safe option to store the tailings in places where there is limited area available; simplified license approval to operate where the tailing facility is a big issue; and avoidance of potential problems with nearby communities.Filtered dry stack tailing storage facilities have some disadvantages such as: technology limitations in operations that process high throughputs (eg >50 000 tpd) as they require many filters resulting in high maintenance and operating costs; higher capital cost; low efficiency in the filtration process, particularly in ores with high clay content increasing operating problems and capital cost; the new technology risk with possible debottlenecking issues and a longer time to achieve the design throughput; and the need to treat larger water flow rates when the water balance is negative.This paper analyses: the operating practices of Mexican gold and silver operations using filtered dry stacking storage facilities; implementation issues, advantages and disadvantages; quantifiable reductions in gold and silver losses and actual lower detoxification cost; and current trends to use filtered dry stacking storage facilities in new projects. In flotation, particulate materials are separated by controlling the hydrophobicity of the particles using appropriate collectors. In this regard, contact angle (?) is the most important process variable. However, the flotation models used in industry today do not include ? as a parameter. As result, flotation circuits are designed based on the first-order flotation rate constants (k) determined from laboratory experiments. A problem with this approach is that laboratory experiments usually give substantially higher k values than achievable in full-scale operations, which makes it difficult to use the model for plant design. In the present work, we have developed a model from first principles using both surface chemistry and hydrodynamic parameters, such as ?, ?-potentials, surface tension (?), particle size, energy dissipation rate, etc. The basic approach is similar to the one developed previously for bubble-particle interactions under laminar flow conditions (Yoon and Mao, J. Colloid and Interface Science, 181, 61, 1996) except that the model parameters have been modified by considering the turbulence in a flotation cell. In addition, the model describes the recovery processes in froth phase, including bubble-coarsening due to coalescence. Based on this model, we have developed a computer simulator (FlotSim) that can be used to design flotation circuits from the mineralogical (or liberation) data on the feed and the hydrodynamic characteristics of a flotation machine. Since the model is dynamic, it can also be used for process control. Further, the simulator has predictive capacity as it is based on a first-principles model. The model-based simulator has been validated in a carefully controlled bench-scale flotation experiments. The Ernest Henry Copper gold mine situated in North West Queensland, Australia, is owned and operated by Xstrata Copper. Currently the open pit produces 11 Mtpa of ore. With open pit mining ceasing in mid 2011 development has begun on an underground sublevel cave mine to extend the life of the operation by another 12 years. When completed the open pit will be 530 m deep and 1.5 km in diameter. The orebody dips at approximately 45° and has been outlined a further 450 m below the base of the pit. This provides some challenges for the Ernest Henry underground mine which is designed to initially truck development and production ore from the end of the pit until a hoisting shaft is commissioned in 2013. Production will then increase to 5.0 Mtpa on its way to an ultimate rate of 6.0 Mtpa in 2016.This paper will focus on the capital development and infrastructure requirements for the underground mine. Areas covered include mine accesses, ore handling system, accommodations for the dip of the orebody, primary ventilation design, dewatering systems and selection of an underground workshop over surface only maintenance.Discussions include the complications arising due to the mine being located directly below a large open pit and the combination of first principle cost analysis and risk assessment which has been used to safely optimise the feasibility study designs.

The Lanfranchi Nickel mine is located approximately 48 km south of Kambalda in Western Australia. Mining first commenced in the mid-1970s under the previous owner, Western Mining Corporation Ltd. After two years on care and maintenance, Panoramic Resources (previously known as Sally Malay Mining Ltd) purchased the operation in November 2004. The site currently produces approximately 10?000 tonnes of nickel metal annually from approximately 430?000 tonnes of ore. The Ore is mined from four main orebodies; Deacon, Helmut South, Lanfranchi and Schmitz. The Helmut South orebody is situated approximately 790 m below surface and extends to a resource depth of 940 m. Horizontal thickness of the orebody ranges from 10 m to 45 m in width, with the average being 30 m. Previous mining at the Lanfranchi operations specifically the Helmut orebody, had a history of seismic activity. When Panoramic Resources acquired the operation it was decided that seismicity was going to be an issue and therefore a mining method needed to be selected that could effectively manage this potential risk. The dip of the orebody is quite shallow at 45º, with a 30º plunge to the south . The hanging-wall comprises of very weak ultramafics. Due to these factors the orebody posed several mining challenges. To safely and effectively mine the Helmut South orebody in the Lanfranchi Nickel mine, underhand cut and fill mining was selected as the most appropriate mining method. Paste fill comprising of cemented gold tailings was the backfill of choice. This paper is intended to convey some of the key learnings from the use of a mining method that has not been commonly practiced in Australia.

Anecdotal reports of high rates of congenital malformations and spontaneous abortions at the Shiprock Indian Health Service Hospital in San Juan County, New Mexico prompted an interview survey, obtaining data from families of 26 former uranium miners and 30 controls. Results supported the possibility of increased fetal wastage and congenital malformations. However, definitive conclusions were obviated by methodologic limitations in terms of selection of cases and controls and interviewing technique, as well as very low numbers and lack of statistical significance. The Council of Environmental Quality (1980) published a report which singled out San Juan County, nationally, as having an extra-ordinary high rate of congenital anomalies reported from birth certificates in the years 1973-75. San Juan County is in the northwest corner of New Mexico and includes the northeastern edge of the Navajo Indian Reservation. It has been the site of uranium mining and milling and also of coal mining (Clement Associates, 1980). While much attention has been focused on lung cancer and chronic lung disease as health hazards to uranium miners, virtually no attention has been focused upon possible reproductive effects that may result from exposure to radiation. Could these reports indicate such an additional arena of health effect either on miners or on others living in the vicinity of the mines and mills? The biologic and epidemiologic literature does not lend much support for adverse genetic outcome. The UNSCEAR report (UNSCEAR, 1977) summarizes much of the existing data. For example, on the basis of many animal studies and what has been observed in atom bomb survivers in Japan, it has been estimated that mutation rates resulting from low LET radiation to paternal germ cells would be 60 X 10-6 recessive and 20 X 10-6 dominant mutations per gamete per rad. There would be a five-fold increase in the number of recognizable abortions. The doubling dose for genetic disorders in mice is estimated at 100 rads. The assumption has been that low levels of exposure, such as might be received occupationally from uranium mines and mills or environmentally will produce reproductive effects that would defy distinction from background rates. However, the possibility can not be dismissed. In man, spermatogonia are thought to be three-fold more sensitive than in the mouse. Also, the high LET radiation from alpha particles is as much as 20-fold more effective in inducing changes in meiotic and post meiotic stages of cells, compared with low LET radiation. There is some degree of localization of alpha emitters in testicular tissue after inhalation of radon and radon daughters (Blanchard, R.L. and Moore, J.B., 1971; Pohl, E., 1964). The slopes of doseeffect curves are affected by type radiation and rate of administration. Data on such curves are poorly defined and debated as to whether there may be increased or decreased effect per unit dose at low levels of high LET radiation. Increased rates of aberrations of chromosomes in peripheral lymphocytes cultured from uranium miners have been reported (Brandom, W.F., et al., 1978). At cumulative exposures of 100 working level months (WLM) or less, a range of exposure lower than the limit of current occupational standards, the aberrations were increased more than two-fold. Our interest has led us to pursue the question of reproductive effects along three separate paths of inquiry: studies of the secondary sex ratio, cytogenetic study of human sperm, and studies of rates of congenital anomalies. I will present the thrust of our findings, most of which remain preliminary, comment on their interpretation and limitations, and indicate directions needed for future research. The secondary sex ratio is the ratio of males to females at birth. In the U.S., the ratio averages around 1.05. Ratios in blacks are somewhat lower (1.025) than in whites (1.053). For American Indians, the data are less definite. Values from Oklahoma and California are similar to whites (1.05). Southwestern tribes have, as we shall see, varying levels. The theoretical effects on sex ratio resulting from irradiation of the zygote are based on the principles of sex-linked genetics, including differential effects of lethal dominant and recessive mutations on the sex chromosomes, complicated by possible non-disjunctional events. Observations have done little to clarify, confirm or refute the theories. The sex ratio of progeny of survivers of the atomic bomb showed little change (Schull, W.J., Otake, M., and Neel, J.V., 1981). Observations in children of uranium miners having been inconsistent. Most frequently cited is a study of miners in Czechoslovakia (Müller, C., Razicka, L., and Bakstein, J., 1967). Compared with children born to miners prior to the start of mining, the sex ratios of children born after the start of mining were decreased -statistically significant after correcting for birth order. The ratios in first-born children were, before the start of mining, 1.118, and, after the start of mining, .713. In the interview survey at Shiprock, the sex ratio in families of non-miners was 1.03, and in families of miners it was 0.73 (p < .05). Dr. Alan Goodman at the University of New Mexico has studied trends in the sex ratio in the general population in New Mexico and Arizona with particular reference to counties in the Four Corners area and the Navajo Indian Reservation, areas where uranium mining has been active_ His findings (unpublished) are as follows: (1) Beginning in the early 1950&apos;s, there has been a modest, but persistant and statistically significant decline in the secondary sex ratio for the state of New Mexico compared with the U.S., a decline that roughly parallels the emergence of uranium mining in the Grants mineral belt in northwestern New Mexico. P. Shahinian and M. R. Achter (U.S. Naval Research Laboratory)—We should like to point out another instance where concentration of impurities in grain boundaries led to an embrittlement. In this case an impure nickel (99.8 pct) developed many more in-tergranular cracks during creep in a nitrogen atmosphere than in vacuum.5 In comparison high-purity nickel (99.99 pct) exhibited a much smaller atmosphere effect. We concluded that the interartion of the nitrogen with nitride-forming impurities concentrated at grain boundaries promoted inter-granular cracking.

[Portland cement is a product made from a combination of limestone and argillaceous material which would supply the necessary amounts f calcium, silica, alumina and iron to form cementious compounds when fired at high temperatures. The resulting mixture, usually around 80% limestone and 20% argillaceous, is ground nine (80% -200 mesh), blended and then fired1 (2600-2700°F) to produce a cement clinker from which the final cement product is produced by grinding. The argillaceous component can be shale, clay, slate or other sources of the individual components of silica, alumina and iron. This paper deals with a case where a clay component was under consideration. The planned Plant site was to be located at a well defined limestone deposit. When it came to the argillaceous component, the nearest uniform deposit of clay was over 50 miles away and would require purchase of land or clay from the owner plus the daily delivery costs to the plant site. This situation made the plant site economically questionable. It was decided that a local clay deposit, which was available at the plant site but was orginally not considered due to lack of chemical uniformity and its high free silica content, would be reconsidered.]

Shore Gold Inc. (Shore) is presently designing a diamond processing plant for the Star and the Orion South kimberlite deposits in the Fort à la Corne (FalC) area in central Saskatchewan. The first step in the plant is diamond liberation and occurs in the comminution section. Diamond liberation is the process of breaking up the kimberlite rock, as gently as possible so as not to damage the diamonds. Autogenous grinding mills (AG mills) use a combination of impact crushing, abrasion and attrition to break up the kimberlite. The forces that occur during the actions of abrasion and attrition cause the kimberlites to break up preferentially along lines of weaknesses which offers a ?diamond friendly? method of comminution. Hard competent kimberlite is commonly found in the diatreme zone as well as the root zone of the volcanic pipe and is the source of kimberlite for most of the Southern African diamond mines. Softer kimberlite is typically found in and around the crater area of a volcanic pipe and it is this kimberlite that makes up the majority of kimberlite for both the Star and Orion South deposits. These softer kimberlites can be readily broken up using abrasion and attrition imparted by AG mills. In order for Shore to benefit from the softer kimberlite found in the Star - Orion South diamond project, two large (10.97 m diameter x 7.10 m long) AG mills were designed for the comminution section based on extensive test work and simulations by Metso Minerals (Metso).

Deformation of gob-side entries has always been a critical concern for ensuring stability in longwall coal mines. This paper addresses the significant deformation and support challenges that arise in thick and hard roof longwall faces (THRLF) due to dynamic pressure. The study aims to elucidate the characteristics and mechanisms of deformation during the retreat of the longwall face. The research findings indicated that the primary cause of deformation was the combination of advanced abutment stress resulting from longwall face mining and the movement of the lateral roof over the chain pillar. To mitigate this issue, we propose a deformation control method known as cutting off the lateral roof (COLR) over the chain pillar. Simulation results demonstrate a significant reduction in roof stress and deformation of the gob-side entry after implementing the lateral roof-cutting technique. These findings provide valuable guidance for effectively managing deformation in gob-side entries, particularly when dealing with thick and hard roof strata.

The Athena gold deposit was discovered in 2007 by Gold Fields Australia Ltd, at the St Ives Gold Mine, 35 km southeast of Kambalda, Western Australia. Gold anomalism was identified in sheared Paringa Basalt as a result of a regional scale aircore drilling program, in association with geophysics. In the 18 months following discovery, the deposit was intensely drilled and by June 2009, it was announced that the Athena deposit contained an ore reserve of 1.7 Mt @ 5.6 g/t for 316 koz. This was followed by a feasibility study, and as a result mine development commenced in November 2009.The Athena mineralisation is hosted in a discrete, north-south striking, steep to moderately dipping shear zone within the southwest dipping Paringa Basalt. Vein intensity has a strong correlation to grade and vein type varies from early thin quartz-albite-sulfide (pyrite and/or pyrrhotite) shear parallel veins to strong brecciation and irregular veining with quartz-albite-actinolite-biotite-pyrrhotite infill. The geology preproduction process developed at the Argo mine was refined and improved following a business improvement project. The aim of the process is to construct detailed geological interpretations prior to development allowing informed mining decisions to be made. The process delivers significant cost savings and revenue enhancements.The development of macroscopic classification scheme was critical to determine ore or waste in the early phases of mining. The Style of Deformation, Alteration and Veining (SAV) Code was the result, and has been enhanced as greater geological knowledge is gained over time.

Scale physical models, constructed according to the principle of similarity theory, have been widely used to simulate the mining disturbances to surrounding strata and to evaluate the effectiveness of implemented ground control techniques. This technique has also been used for studying mining-induced surface and subsurface subsidence. The movements of the observation points installed on the physical model at different mining stages are currently measured using total station which is time-consuming and inaccurate especially on small scale models. A photogrammetry-based measurement system has been developed. During a physical modeling process, photos of the model can be taken during the simulation process reducing survey time from hours to a few seconds. A program, Photogrammetry Analysis for Physical Modeling of Mine Subsidence Process (PAPMMSP), developed based on photogrammetric principle is used to quickly identify the installed observation points and accurately determine their coordinates. The measurement accuracy is well under submillimeter level—an ultra-important advantage as any measurement errors in coordinates are magnified by the model dimension scale (commonly 20 to 400). A physical modeling case of subsurface strata movements and deformations associated with longwall mining operations is presented in the paper to demonstrate the functions and capabilities of the developed photogrammetry program.

This study presents a method for the determination of intra-particle diffusivities in ion-exchange resins for the purposes of evaluating the state of resin degradation during service. The method uses a zero length column (ZLC) in a closed circuit with variable speed pump and reservoir. The intra-particle diffusion is determined from absorption data by using the Nernst-Plank approximation along with the ‘mass transfer factor’ - which is a product of the mass transfer coefficient (kf )and the concentration of the adsorbing ion in the liquid at the surface of the resin - in a computer algorithm fitting simulated curves to experimental data.. Through this approach the changed intra-particle diffusivity, of a gel-type acid resin, over a 1000 loading and elution cycles, is shown.
