The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) recommends that the upper 1.22 m (4 ft) of spoil material on reclaimed surfaces should be left as uncompacted as possible to facilitate efficient tree root growth. However, the main concerns about applying the FRA to steep slopes is that the upper 1.22 m (4 ft) of loose spoil material could cause instability. Successful application of the FRA on the flat and rolling surfaces precipitated this investigation. Details of a field investigation conducted at a steep-slope mine site are available in an earlier publication (Kumar and Sweigard, 2011). A total of 70 survey monuments were driven into the slope in a regular pattern to monitor any type of slope movement. Quarterly surveying of the monuments were done to quantify slope movement, either horizontally or vertically. The methodology developed in this research for field slope movement monitoring was validated using computer model results. Analytical models based on the limit equilibrium method (LEM) and numerical models based on the finite element method (FEM) were developed for slope stability analysis. The LEM analysis was done using the Geo-Slope/W program following the simplified Bishop method. However, numerical models were developed using the PLAXIS computer program following the Mohr’s Coulomb failure criterion and strength reduction technique. The slope stability analysis was performed for two different scenarios: first with the top 1.22 m (4 ft) of loose graded spoil material and second without top loose graded spoil material. Finally, the field investigation results were compared with stability analysis results. Both of these approaches showed that application of the FRA on steep slopes is not causing any significant instability problems, due to 1.22 m (4 ft) loose graded spoil that would not exist otherwise for overly steepened slopes.

The Bureau of Mines used high-temperature reduction roasting, magnetic separation, acid-leaching, and autoclave precipitation processes to recover iron and manganese from brown Cuyana range ores of Minnesota. Wet magnetic separation concentrated over 90 percent of the iron in 3 of 4 ores as high grade products analyzing 74 to 85 percent iron, 2.5 to 6 percent manganese, and 3 to 10 percent SiO2. The nonmagnetic fractions were leached with dilute sulfuric acid extracting 83 to 93 percent of the contained manganese and small amounts of iron. The leach solutions contained Mn-to-Fe and Mn-to-SiO2 ratios favorable enough for possible consumption in metallurgical mane operations. Exceptionally pure Mn solutions were achieved by pressure precipitation of the remaining iron in an autoclave followed by lime precipitation of silica and alumina.

The industrial minerals industry in Newfoundland and Labrador is a significant contributor to the provincial economy. The variety ofcommodities produced reflects the diverse geological environment from which they come. A highlight of the past decade has been the continuing development of dimension stone quarries, with producers now active in anorthosite, gabbro, granite and sandstone. Other dimension stone prospects have been identified and are in various stages of assessment and development. Western Newfoundland hosts a large resource of limestone, dolomite and marble. It provides raw material for industries that produce Portland cement, agricultural limestone and aggregate, as well as chemical-grade limestone and dolomite products. In western Labrador, dolomitic marble is quarried for use in the production of self-fluxing iron ore pellets. The recent opening of a new gypsum quarry at Fischells Brook signalled the beginning of a new era in the commercial production ofgypsum, a commodity which the province has produced since the 1950s. Hopefully it will emulate the nearby Flat Bay Quarry (now closed) which was a long-time exporter to markets along the U.S. eastern seaboard, in addition to supplying local demands. Oil production and continuing exploration in the Newfoundland offshore has renewed interest in local barite deposits for potential use in drilling fluids. Already there has been some production from the Collier Point deposit, and at Buchans, an existing plant is being refurbished to recover barite from a large tailings pond. Emerging new industries include the development of an antimony mine in central Newfoundland, the development of silica deposits near Labrador City for silicon metal production, and reactivation of the St. Lawrence fluorspar mine. The province has many deposits with development potential such as rare metals at Strange Lake, white marble at Roddickton and salt deposits near St. George's Bay region.

Many of the difficult operating problems of the preparation of coal for market, of sampling coal shipments and in the utilization of coal are caused by segregation in the coal mass. Segregation may be of two kinds: i.e., "size segregation," in which particles of the same size in a mass of coal containing a range of sizes collect together and "density segregation," in which particles of the same density or specific gravity in a mass of particles of varying density gather together. Mechanics of Segregation Size segregation cannot take place with closely sized coal. As the size range increases, the tendency for size segregation increases. Similarly, cleaned coal with particles of approximately the same specific gravity have very little tendency for density segregation. The wider the density range of particles and the more particles of different density, the greater the chances are for density segregation. The following discussion deals primarily with coal of a wide size range as screenings and of wide density differences as uncleaned or run-of-mine screenings. If a mass of coal containing particles of a wide size range is subject to the stream action of a moving current of water, the small particles are transported farther than the coarser. "Due to the challenging geological environment of the Postmasburg Manganese Field (PMF), a study was conducted to determine if any benefits would derive from the inclusion of resistivity data during threedimensional (3D) modelling of the manganese resource. This was achieved by estimating manganese resources from 2011/2012 drilling data and comparing them with manganese resources estimated from the same drilling data and resistivity data collected during 2013 and 2017.Both models were adjusted to limit their extent to the same 3D modelling space. Significant volume and tonnage differences were observed for all lithological units. The greatest differences were noted in the manganiferous zones of alteration – 7.200 Mt for the geological model versus 3.700 Mt for the geoelectric model.This study showed that the inclusion of resistivity data can reduce exploration costs significantly, as a direct consequence of the resistivity data allowing more accurate siting of boreholes. This decreases the number of boreholes, samples, and analyses required due to the 3D electrical delineation of mineralized areas prior to drilling.An additional benefit is the ability to more correctly forecast the net present value of an operation due to more accurate estimation of manganese resources and stripping ratios. This is clearly demonstrated by the estimated gross profit estimation of R409 million for the geological resource model versus R264 million for the geoelectric resource model.The addition of resistivity data can, therefore, reduce exploration costs and can increase confidence in geological and financial modelling. It would be reasonable to conclude that this approach could also be used for karsthosted massive sulphide deposits. IntroductionAccording to Corathers (2014) and Gajigo, Mutambatsere. and Adjei (2011), South Africa holds between 75–80% of global manganese reserves, followed by Ukraine (10%), Australia (3%), India (3%), and Gabon (2%). The known, land-based, manganese resources located elsewhere are estimated at 2%.The majority of economically important sedimentary manganese ore deposits in South Africa are situated in the Northern Cape Province (Gutzmer, 1996). Manganese ores of the Postmasburg Manganese Field (PMF) were discovered in 1922, and the Kalahari Manganese Field (KMF) in 1940. According to Astrup and Tsikos (1998) and Gutzmer (1996), mining of manganese ore from the PMF ceased during 1989 in favour of the superior quality of manganese ore from the KMF."

"Uranium is a unique commodity. It is both a metal and a fuel, It has both commercial and military uses. It yields ""clean energy "" but presents environmental concerns. All of these factors have an impact on the commerce of uranium.Being a metal, uranium is extracted from ore like many other metallic minerals. As a fuel, it is subject to the vagaries of energy commodity market forces. The history of uranium in the first nuclear weapons has led to nation al governments carefully controlling production and sale of uranium. The spectre of radioactive contamination of the environment adds further to the public concern over the disposal of low-level radioactive wastes from uranium processing and use.There have been a number of excellent reviews on the commercial aspects of the uranium industry. In this discussion, these aspects will be briefly summarized to provide a general picture of the strengths of the Canadian uranium industry and the pressures to which it is being subjected currently. The principal thrust of this paper will be to outline Canada's resource strength and to identify some factors which will affect Canada's ability to continue holding a sizeable share of the world uranium market."

The naturally occurring aged manganese oxide coated on the granular media was found to have a catalytic effect on the removal of low concentration of Mn(II) (-1 ppm) from drinking water. Applying this principle, a manganese removal technique was developed for removal of higher concentration of Mn(II) (-100 ppm) from mine drainage by using various aged filter media and synthesized granular media with manganese oxide coatings. Laboratory-scale continuous granular media column experiments were conducted to assess the feasibility of manganese oxide-coated granular media for Mn(II) removal from synthesized mine drainage. The removals of Mn(II) were evaluated as a function of operation parameters including solution pH, manganese oxide concentration coated on the media, interstitial velocity, and oxidant concentration of influent. Higher solution pH and/or higher manganese oxide concentration promoted the removal of Mn(II) on the oxide-coated granular media under low interstitial velocity. Addition of sodium hypochlorite as an oxidant in the influent resulted in continuously regenerated oxidized surface to serve as the catalyst for Mn(II) oxidation reaction on the surface of oxide-coated media.

This report summarizes the results of laboratory investigations conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines to obtain hydrometallurgical information on the dissolution of mercury sulfides from ores, flotation concentrates, and pure mercuric sulfides. Statistical methods were used to design the experiments and evaluate the resulting data. Studies demonstrated that cinnabar is readily soluble in sodium sulfide, partly soluble in potassium sulfide, and essentially insoluble in ammonium sulfide. Additions of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide to sodium sulfide solutions increased mercury extraction slightly; when either was added to potassium sulfide or ammonium sulfide solutions, mercury extraction was equal to that of sodium sulfide. Tests at the Albany Metallurgy Research Center showed that sodium sulfide would completely dissolve chemically pure mercuric sulfide, more than 95 percent of the cinnabar in 5-percent mercury flotation concentrates, and 60 to 90 percent of the cinnabar in low-grade ores. The double-leach tests showed that potassium sulfide would dissolve over 90 percent of the arsenic in mercury-arsenic products and 1 to 10 percent of the mercury; then sodium sulfide-hydroxide solutions would dissolve 80 to 90 percent of the remaining mercury and 5 to 10 percent of the arsenic.

Australia contains some of the most productive mining areas and is characterised by ancient landscapes and highly variable hydrology. Historical mining of iron ore, coal and other minerals has targeted ore deposits located above water tables, and elevated above creek lines where possible to reduce cost. The downturn in mining caused by falling ore prices over recent years has triggered a drive to reduce cost, maximise yield and delay capital expenditure associated with opening new mines. So as the ore deposits with more favorable mining conditions become depleted there is an increased focus on mining ore associated with valley floors and creek lines. This is demonstrated by a regional assessment of the extent of Channel Iron Deposits (CID) and Iron Ore (Fe) Mines and Deposits in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia (Figure 1). A large proportion of these mines are, or plan to, target high grade CID ore associated with existing creek systems. Figure 2 shows outcropping and inferred sub-cropping CID extents, which suggests there are vast quantities of CID ore deposits throughout the Pilbara Region, intersected by major creeks which could be mined at some point in the future using creek diversions (Atkinson et al., 2017). A similar picture could also be produced for coal mining in Queensland, particularly in areas such as the Bowen Basin.While creek diversions provide an opportunity to maximise the utilisation of these orebodies and extend the life of mine, creek diversions can involve substantial financial, social, environmental and regulatory risks that need to be carefully managed (Markham et al., 2017, Atkinson et al., 2017). This paper discusses the key issues and opportunities associated with diversion decision making. It highlights the importance of using a well-structured assessment methodology that allows key stakeholders to be part of the assessment process and is complementary to material presented in Atkinson et al., (2017). Design considerations for operational and closure designs are presented, as well as mine planning considerations, risks, cost saving opportunities and the benefits of an integrated approach to design. The relevance of ore-dressing mineralogical investigations to developing and improving metallurgical flow-sheets is discussed and examples are given of the application of such studies to various types of ores and mill products (Au, Cu-Sn, Ni and Sn). The mineralogical investigations described illustrate (a) assessment of the feasibility of ore pre-concentration by heavy-media cyclone separation, (b) evaluation of the potential applicability of various metallurgical treatment processes to an ore, and (c) characterization of mill products to assess circuit efficiency and to guide circuit modifications.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYThis is one of a series of reports describing investigations within the Missouri River Basin in Montana conducted by mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines, Minerals Division, Region II. The primary purpose of these investigations is to provide basic information to agencies of the Department of Interior and others concerned with the planning of power and other water developments in the basin. This report contains only such factual data as have been authorized for public distribution. Special precautions have been taken not to reveal any information or data that are considered confidential.The field investigations for this report were made during the summer of 1949. Virtually all known metallic mineral deposits in the county and same nonmetallic (industrial) mineral deposits were investigated. Most of the mines and prospects have been inactive for many years. The old underground workings generally are only partly accessible; many are entirely inaccessible. Most of the mining claims were located many years ago, and a considerable number were patented. Many claims were abandoned; others were relocated. Nimes and ownerships often have changed. Because of such conditions, much of the information on most of the mines and prospects necessarily has been obtained from available Federal and State publications, private geologists' and engineers' reports, and from owners and local residents.Metal mining in Cascade County, Mont., has been confined mainly to the silver-lead-zinc deposits in the Montana (Neihart) and Barker districts in the southeastern part of the county. The Neihart district has yielded by far the greater part of the county's metal output. The mines generally have been operated intermittently, largely because of fluctuating or low silver and base metal prices."

PHYSICAL BLAST DATA Pattern Description All measurements related to the description of the physical blast pattern must be made with the mind-set that it has to tell a powerful factual story enabling a future accurate reconstruction of the event. A case has never been lost because too much factual information was available to assist investigators. An accurate physical description of the pattern must be provided based on the blaster’s observations of the pattern actually loaded. The blaster must measure the pattern size, depth, face heights, etc., recording only accurate results. All too often, a blaster records simple pattern sizes and information relayed to him or her from the driller, or from a phone call into the office the night before for powder pre-load inventory purposes. If a pattern was actually measured on the job site by the blaster to be 8.5 x 9.5’, it may, in fact, originally have been ordered at 9’x9’, 8’x9’, or 9’x l0’. In a claim situation, particularly flyrock, recording a “generalization” of what was loaded could result in an interpretation of a blaster’s negligence due to “not knowing or caring” what the actual pattern was, and not loading appropriately for conditions. It is important to remember that other documentation exists such as a drill log from a contract driller or mine records that may provide a different interpretation of the loaded pattern.

"Drilled shafts are being used as foundation support for parabolic solar troughs at the Genesis Solar Project being constructed near Blythe, California. Three types of drilled shaft foundations are required for the project. At project build-out, there will be a total of 23,008 drilled shafts installed at the site. Preliminary designs for the axial and lateral capacity of the drilled piers were based on conventional geotechnical engineering methodologies and soil-structure interaction. The drilled shafts and subsurface conditions were modeled through the use of the computer program LPILE v6.0.Conducting lateral load testing of drilled shafts was considered appropriate to confirm or modify the geotechnical parameters used in the preliminary design. The lateral load testing program was conducted to provide site-specific test data that would allow the design engineers (both geotechnical and structural) to predict the actual performance and adequacy of the proposed drilled shaft foundations and improve the efficiency and hopefully reduce project costs.The lateral load testing was conducted within two solar fields at the site. Three pairs of drilled shaft foundations were installed in each field, instrumented, and laterally loaded to determine load-deflection response. A value-engineered option, proposed by one of the drilled shaft contractors, was also load tested. The results of the load-deflection data obtained in the field was used to modify the soil modeling used in the original L-PILE analyses and adjust the production drilled shaft lengths.Based on the results of the lateral load testing, the in-situ moduli of the subsurface soils were significantly increased over that assumed in the preliminary analyses. Based on the final soil-structure interaction analyses, the preliminary drilled shaft lengths were reduced by 2 to 2-1/2 feet. This resulted in an overall reduction of 55,654 feet of drilled shaft construction on the entire project, a savings of approximately 16.5% over the preliminary"

In the 19th century, mining in northern Chile was of great economic importance. Today, the ruinsof the copper smelters and abundant fragments of refractory bricks from their furnaces remain. Therefractory materials have not been previously studied. the origin, physical and chemical properties, and compressive strength of 10 different samples of historical refractory bricks collected on-site were investigated. The characterization results showed that the bricks are silico-aluminous, unlike the magnesium-chromium bricks used by current foundries. It was determined that 90% of them were produced in the UK and 10% were manufactured in Chile. The phases present are mullite, quartz, cristobalite, and tridymite, and the chemical composition corresponds mainly to SiO2. The compressive strength of the historical bricks is similart to those currently used,. These results may contribute to the knowledge of the 19th century mining and metallurgical historical heritage of Chile and the UK.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a thin-film X-ray fluorescence technique to rapidly determine Cu, Ni, Co, Fe, and Cr in super alloy leach liquors. Total analysis time per sample was less than 15 min, as opposed to several hours for traditional wet chemical methods. Precision and accuracy were checked by replicate analyses of solutions similar in composition to leach liquors, whose analyte concentrations were well known. Coefficients of variation for all elements were found to be less than 2 pet. With the exception of the results for Fe, all relative errors of estimation were also found to be less than 2 pet. Bulk liquids are not introduced into the spectrometer; thus, the potential for damage to the instrument by leakage of corrosive liquids is eliminated.

"Since the Mathew's method for open stope design was first proposed by Golder Associates in 1980 it has been applied at a number of mine sites in Canada. The initial hypothesis was based on a relatively small amount of data and the intervening period has allowed the collection of a significant amount of new data to test the validity of the method.This paper examines a brief history of the evolution of rock mass classification systems to provide background and emphasize their empirical and non-rigorous approach. It also presents the new data which appear to indicate that the initial hypothesis was reasonably good. The modification to the original graph proposed by Potvin is discussed as well as the applicability of the method to predicting the onset of caving. The original graph has been updated and has been subdivided into four zones described as ""stable""; ""potentially unstable""; ""potential major failure""; and ""potential caving"". The method is recommended as a useful open stoping design tool provided it is recognized that it is not a rigorous design method.Finally the paper proposes a recommended approach for application of the method by would-be users and addresses some typical pitfalls that may be encountered."

Social licence to mine is influenced by society’s perception of the mining sector’s ability to effectively rehabilitate mined land and for governments to appropriately regulate that process for the broader community benefit. In Queensland, Australia, many mine rehabilitation personnel working for active coalmines, as either staff, consultants or contractors, belong to the Central Queensland Mine Rehabilitation Group (CQMRG). The CQMRG was established 23 years ago with the aim of sharing informal knowledge related to practical aspects of rehabilitation in order to leave as positive a legacy as possible from mined land. This voluntary group of professionals also includes members from regulatory agencies and civil society. Within the dynamic regional mining environment, mine rehabilitation professionals benefit from sharing their informal knowledge.CQMRG is currently a group in transition. Mining boom and downturn cycles have exacerbated the loss of accumulated knowledge in the core CQMRG membership due to rapid changes in personnel at mines in the region. Additionally, some of the most experienced CQMRG-affiliated rehabilitation practitioners are approaching the end of their careers and want their valuable and less formal knowledge retained. Mining companies are now looking for more effective ways to engage the community in public participation. Consensus-based approaches are becoming the most popularly applied way of achieving meaningful public participation. This paper introduces the principles surrounding consensus-building approaches and the processes for getting them started. The Healthy Communities Movement is one such consensus-based approach that offers a well-established holistic model for conceptualizing a healthy sustainable community. It also highlights the importance of public participation as an essential component of achieving a sustainable community. The paper concludes by illustrating how current company-community relations programs can utilize these models.
