Movement of ore and waste from the Hilton Mines pit is accomplished by truck haulage. With the aim of reducing costs, a study of truck fleet replacement was initiated. The study included on-site short-term tests and longer-term rental purchase agreements for haulage trucks. The operation and maintenance characteristics of different trucks, along with projected haulage conditions, were used to prepare cash flows, from which the most advantageous trucks were selected. The results of the study and implementation of the recommendations gave a cost saving greater than had been estimated. The study also indicated areas where improvements could be made, and resulted in much more attention being paid to road conditions, the training of operators and mechanics, and the development of a practical preventative maintenance scheme.

Tomago sandbeds is an unconfined coastal aquifer located 20km. north of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia. These sandbeds extend over an area of about 130km. The average aquifer depth is about 20m. with a mean transmissivity of about 400sq.m/day and a specific yield of about 0.2. The city of Newcastle and surrounding areas derive water from Tomago for potable purposes. The average extraction being about 50 ML/day. The iron value of the ground water varies between 5 and 15mg/1. This iron is removed by a conventional water treatment plant using Alum. The aquifer whilst principally quartzose also contains deposits of heavy minerals like rutile, zircon, ilmenite, etc., The mineral sand mining has been in progress at Tomago since 1972. Mining is carried out in a con- structed pond with a water depth of about 5m. on which is floated a suction cutter dredge that moves across the front of the pond using a water jet to entrain the soil from the ground surface to the bottom of the mineralised zone. Effect of mineral sand mining on ground water quality, particularly iron, was the subject of intensive investigations undertaken at Tomago since 1970. The effect on water quality was studied by collecting and analysing water samples from network of observation wells established during the period of mining. Water samples were collected about 4-5 years prior to mining and analysed for iron, sulphate, chloride, pH, etc., After mining the observation wells were re-established at the same locations and water samples were collected and analysed for at least 5 years after mining. Introduction Kootenay strata of Lower Cretaceous age contain much of the highest rank coal produced in Alberta. These strata outcrop in the foothills and mountains of southwestern Alberta and southeastern British Columbia, and the economic value of the coal seams contained in them was evident to the earliest explorers, who refer co them in their journals. Lacer, investigation of the .coal measures was undertaken by prospectors and by a succession of geologists, most of whom were in the employ of the Federal government, but some acted for private interests. Surveys by these men proved chat foothills and mountain regions hold immense quantities of high-grade coal within easy reach of transportation facilities, and their conclusions have accelerated the development of the coal-mining industry m Alberta. Among geologists who have contributed much to our knowledge of the region are J. M. Dawson, G. M. Dawson, R. C. McConnell, D. B. Dowling, J. D. Mackenzie, B. Rose, J. R. Marshall, B. Rose, J. R. Marshall, B. R. McKay, J. A. Allan, and J. L. Carr. The present paper is to a great extent a compilation of the work of the above men and of several others who have investigated the area lying between Bow river and Crowsnest pass. Space does not permit a list of all the sources of information so chat only chose of prime importance are given in the text. Data for the map and ?cross-sections of Figure 1 were taken from the following published maps of the Geological Survey of Canada: Cascade Coal Basin, Pub. 933; Canmore, Maps 322 and 323; Upper Elk River and Upper Highwood Rivers, Pub. l980; Blairmore, Pub. 1584; Southfork Coal Area Map l03A; and of the Research Council of Alberta: Highwood-Elbow Area, Map 20; and Ribbon Creek Area, Map 21. In some cases, the cross-sections have been simplified or otherwise altered, and for these revisions the writer cakes full responsibility. The stratigraphic sections of Figure 2 have been taken from published reports of the above mentioned organizations. The area covered in this paper is shown in Figure l. It is wholly within Alberta, and reaches from township 5 to township 27 and from range 1 co range 11, west of the fifth meridian. Its location is about fifty miles west of both Calgary and Lethbridge. Topography of the area ranges from foothill on the east to mountainous on the west. In this paper' the foothill region is considered to be chat which lies immediately east of the most easterly mountain ranges, such as Livingstone and Highwood. There are two principal coal mining districts in the area, one served by the main line of the Canadian ?Pacific railway and centring about Canmore, the other by a branch line of che same railway and centring about Bellevue, Blairmore, and Coleman.

Diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems and biodiesel fuels are two of the most promising technologies available to the mining industry to reduce the exposure of underground miners to diesel particulate matter (DPM). A study has been conducted to estimate the potential of DPF systems and biodiesel blends to reduce DPM emissions from production vehicles. Results of testing three DPF systems in an isolated zone showed 88% to 99% reductions in elemental carbon concentrations. The test results also show that biodiesel blends, B20 and B50, reduced the elemental carbon concentrations in the mine air by 26 and 48 percent, respectively.

"Brickless reaction shaft is the latest progress for flash smelting furnace. However, there are many factors influence the melting point of the freeze slag inside brickless reaction shaft, and their variational regularities are not obvious, thus, it is difficult for conventional methods to analyze accurately the complex data. In this research, the experiment data of slag melting point were processed based on optimal discrimination plane. For this method, two orthogonal vectors were firstly built up based on the Fisher's criterion, and then the experiment data were projected onto the two vectors, thus, two-dimensional feature vectors were extracted as criteria to determine the factors effect degree on the slag melting point. Results show that the CaO content is the greatest factor to the melting point of the freeze slag inside brickless reaction shaft, the content of Fe3O4, SiO2, Cu2 O and MgO is the second, and the FeO content is the last.IntroductionBrickless reaction shaft is the latest progress of flash smelting furnace reaction shaft. The content of the book covers: (1) The theory of the Eötvös torsion balance; derivation of the working formulas; description of the instrument; method of observation; relation of the magnitudes observed to the lines of force and the level surfaces of gravity; corrections or normal effects, near and distance terrane; subterranean effects; effects due to certain mathematical bodies. (2) Notes on the practical employment of the Eötvös torsion balance; initial testing of the instrument and of accessories; hints on planning the survey; work at the station site; office computation and plotting of results; the interpretation of the results: (3) A description of the instrument and instructions for its manipulation. This book was the best discussion in English on the theory and use of the Eötvös torsion balance and is surpassed only by a later paper by the same authors that covers much of the same ground. The book is suitable for a textbook for beginners, and advanced students will find it of use. It should be available as a reference book in all geological libraries and in all torsion balance department offices.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each approach? A PCB was created using more modern microcontrollers programmed in C, C ++ and Whiting language to simulate a replacement of a PLC in an actual machine. Having a very positive result, being able to handle the machine manually via Wi fi besides being able to also perform a real-time monitoring of the machine's motors through the mobile phone, thus entering the IoT and fitting into the Industry 4.0.

This bulletin contains a statement of certain results that will be embodied in a report describing investigations of the combustion of fuel made by the United States Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines in a specially constructed long furnace. The furnace forms part of the fuel-testing plant at Pittsburg, Pa., which was established and equipped by t.he Geological Survey, but passed under the control of the Bureau of Mines on July 1, 1910, when a t.ransfer of fuel-test.ing investjgations, authorized by act of Congress, became effective. The work discussed in this bulletin was done under the direction of the Geological Survey. The furnace was designed and built for an experimental study of the processes of combustiop, this study being part of a comprehensive plan for testing fuels to determine their heat value and the manner in which they can be used to best advantage. Although the main object of the researches made with the furnace by the Geological Survey was to examine critically the production of sensible heat by combustion along the path of the gases rising from the fuel, an interesting as well as important side problem developed in the study of the simultaneous dissipation of the heat through the walls and roof . of the furnace. Thus incidental data were collected on the temperature gradient through the walls at several places. These temperature data. (together with the heat conductivity of the material of the walls) formed the basis for calculating the heat dissipated through the walls. The object of this report is to present and discuss these temperature data. The discussion particularly concerns the air-space type of wall construction as compared with the solid brick wall or walls type, in which the air space is filled with some solid material of low heat conductivity. The conclusion of the authors, which perhaps will surprise some readers, is that, so far as loss of heat is concerned, a solid wall of brick or any ordinary material is preferable to a hollow wall of the same total thickness, especially if the air space in the hollow wall is near the furnace side. There is a general belief that l?ince air is a poor conductor of heat, air spaces built into the walls of a furnace will prevent or reduce heat dissipation through the wa.lls. Although there may be instances of furnace walls in which such construction reduces the rate of heat flow through them, yet as a rule the effect of the air space is just the opposite. While the heat does travel very slowly through the air by conduction, it leaps over the air space readily by radiation. Although this latter mode of heat propagation is common in nature, the laws governing it are not generall;y known and are seldom taken into consideration when furnace walls are being designed. It may be stated here that the quantity of heat passing through a. portion of a solid wall by conduction depends on the difference between the temperatures of the two planes limiting the portion of the wall. The quantity of heat that passes across the air space in the waH depends on the difference of the fourth powers of the absolute temperatUI: es of the surfaces inclosing Hie air space. It follows that, in case the heat. passes by conduction through the solid'portion of the wall, the loss remains approximately the same so long as the temperature of the two limiting planes remains constant, no matter what may be the temperature of the two planes. On the other hand, the heat passing across the air space by radiation increases rapidly with the temperatures of the inclosing surfaces, although the difference between these temperatures may remain constant. This feature will be shown by curves in the latter part of this paper and thoroughly discussed. The important point is that the air space, which is advantageous in the walls of a refrigerator because the temperatures are low, is objectionable in a furnace wall because the temperatures are high. It is customary to put air spaces in furnace walls between the firebrick linings and the common brick. Usually the fire-brick lining is only half a brick thick, which construction brings the air space too close to the furnace. The result is that the temperatures of the surfaces inclosing the air spaces are too high, and in consequence too much heat is radiated across the spaces. The heat passing through such walls would be much reduced if the air spaces were filled with brick, or, better, with some cheap nonconducting materials, such as ash, sand, mineral wool, etc. Even where the fire-brick lining is one brick thick (9 inches), the temperature in the furnace may be high enough to raise the temperatures of the air-space surfaces so much that the heat radiated across the space will amount to more than would the heat conducted through a filling, were the filling only common brick. This last statement is amply justified by the data here presented.

This paper addresses issues associated with ore pass degradation caused by material impact. A series of numerical experiments, using the particle flow code, were undertaken to investigate the influence of various finger raise configuration. This has allowed the identification of favorable configurations. The results of this analysis, when coupled with field observations, can contribute to the design of ore pass systems that can prolong the useful operating life of ore pass systems.

Introducing online X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzers in the mining and processing industries can lower costs and improve the representativeness and speed of analysis. The applicability of the CON-XTM industrial conveyor XRF analyzer for continuous measurement of potassium content in process materials was demonstrated at various stages of potassium muriate (MOP) production. The CON-X analyzer produced reliable and accurate results for sylvinite ore (27–36% KCl), MOP cake after flotation (88–97% KCl), and NaCl residue (1.5–5% KCl). Tests of the analyzer at an MOP-producing plant showed a < 0.5% difference between online and laboratory results.

Australian mining and engineering companies have increasingly been investing in the mining industry in Brazil. It is a country of enormous mineral and agricultural wealth, with a well-established mining sector. Some Brazilian mining companies and personnel have been journeying in the opposite direction. There are significant differences in the approaches to engineering between the Australian and Brazilian industries that can cause confusion for companies operating in the other country. These range from differing expectations during the various stages of feasibility studies to style of plant and contracting strategies during the construction phase of projects. Some of the differences are driven by tax regimes, labour costs, or different settlement patterns. Others are the result of different histories and pressures on the industries in the two nations.This paper describes some of the differences in approach found in the two countries and some of the reasons for them.

The Pueblo Viejo project in the Dominican Republic installed an innovative sample system on its reverse circulation (RC) drilling rig during commissioning and subsequent commencement of operations. As knowledge of the orebody increased with mining and plant production, cost pressures became apparent that raised questions concerning the continued use of RC drilling versus blasthole sampling for ore control.To justify the continued use of RC drilling for grade control, an in-depth study was undertaken to determine the quality of the sample and prove its value-add to the operation.To investigate the differences in sample quality, a complete bench trial was initiated across both ore pits to compare RC drill results with blasthole assays on a side-by-side basis. The results indicated that based on ore block comparison between RC and blasthole sampling, RC identified an additional 20 per cent of high-grade (+ 4.5 g/t Au) ounces.Previous work indicated that Au, Ag and Cu were all elevated in the drill fines at Pueblo Viejo (Goers and Almond, 2012). This previous test work did not consider the quantity of fines in an RC sample therefore new test work was undertaken to include particle size distribution analyses. This study would determine if the inclusion of fines in the sample was occurring and compare the quantity of fines in the sample against other sample systems and blasthole samples.Comparisons between RC samples and blasthole samples indicate that for the RC samples a range of 30–35 per cent of the sample passed 300 mesh as compared to blastholes where the range of the sample passing 300 mesh was 15–30 per cent.This paper includes a case study on the importance of accurate samples and how they have impacted throughput through the pressure oxidation process plant at Pueblo Viejo. The accurate samples provided by RC allow for improved stockpile and blending strategies, showing the importance of accurate samples to manage risk and create value, against the perception that savings can be made at the risk of poor sampling performance.CITATION:Almond, M and Ventura, L, 2017. One phase of Bureau of Mines' work in health and safety is promotion of the use of safe, satisfactory, and reliable respiratory protective. devices. To insure that such devices will be available, the Bureau has established schedules of minimum requirements for self-contained breathing apparatus, gas masks, supplied-air respirators. (hose masks, air-line respirators, and abrasive blasting helmets, hoods, or masks), dispersoid (dust, fume, and mist) respirators, and nonemergency gas respirators (chemical cartridge respirators). Approval tests of self-contained breathing apparatus are conducted by the Safety Branch; approval tests of other types of respiratory protective equipment are conducted by the Health Branch. Both branches are in the Health and Safety Division.

"After almost 100 years, since the first commercial application began in Australia, flotation has shown an extraordinary growth and nearly 2 billion tons of ore per year are presently treated by flotation processes. During this time flotation has promoted a wide scope of research activities ranging from fundamental chemistry and hydrodynamic studies to studies of industrial operations. In general, fundamental studies have been mainly related to ideal situations. In recent years, however, large efforts have been focusing on achieving a better insight into the actual sub-processes provided by the development of new and more sophisticated instrumentation. Since the massive incorporation of flotation columns, around 15 years ago, a renewed interest in flotation fundamental studies, process modelling and new cell designs have been observed worldwide. The key role of the froth has been recognized as an independent and sometimes rate limiting process step. Thus, separation of pulp and froth process stages seems the most appropriate in terms of process modelling, diagnostic, design and scale-up purposes.In relation to flotation equipment development, until the middle of the 1970’s, only the sub-aeration mechanical cells were dominant. Since the 1980’s, the use of pneumatic cells and forced air mechanical cells has emerged strongly. Also, in the last decade, flotation equipment has shown a dramatic increase in size, reaching values of 200m3 in unitary mechanical cells and more than 300m3 in columns. The general feeling, however, is that, despite the great advance observed in terms of process knowledge, the mechanisms and principles of industrial flotation cells design and scale-up are still not fully understood.Advances in process instrumentation and control now in use allow for more efficient operations, both in metallurgical performance and savings in operating costs."

Groundwater monitoring conducted at an acidic uranium-tailings impoundment in Wyoming and at one in Ontario indicate that at these unlined impoundments situated on unconfined sand aquifers, there exist well-developed plumes of contaminated groundwater. In the literature similar results are reported for three other unconfined aquifers at mill sites in Wyoming. The plumes extend for distances of several hundred to a few thousand metres from the impoundments. They have a zone of low pH beneath and adjacent to the impoundments and a larger zone of near-neutral pH that extends to the outer limits of the plume. The low-pH zones are generally small compared to the neutral-pH zones because the advance rate of the fronts of acidic tailings-derived water is slower than the average velocity of groundwater which controls the advance of the high pH zone. The retardation of the acid fronts is a result of geochemical reactions that cause hydrogen-ion consumption in a slowly-advancing neutralization zone. Within each of the plumes, the low-pH zone has high concentrations of transition metals, heavy metals and radionuclides. In the neutral-pH zones all of the metals and radionuclides occur at significantly lower concentrations and are generally at levels much below those specified in national drinking water standards. An exception at two of the Wyoming sites is uranium, which exists at levels close to the drinking water limit. A second exception is ferrous iron at the Ontario site, which occurs at high concentrations throughout most of the plume. The carbonate alkalinity at this site is much lower than at the Wyoming sites. The field data indicate that even in very permeable aquifers with a low content of silt and clay, there is normally a considerable capacity for acid-front retardation. To take advantage of this capacity to control contaminant movement in the design, operation and decommissioning of tailings impoundments, it is necessary to be able to predict the rate of acid-front movement. This predictive task has two primary components. The first is to identify the important flow paths from the tailings through the groundwater system and the second is to determine the degree of acid-front retardation that will occur as the tailings-derived water moves along these flow paths. Relative to these two tasks determination of the effects of hydrodynamic dispersion is generally of lesser importance and simple approximations that do not involve field or laboratory tests are probably adequate. In order to effectively apply the acid neutralization concept to the prediction of subsurface contaminant migration at uranium-mill tailings, improved representations of hydrogeochemical behavior of iron and aluminum in the neutralization zone and of the consumption of hydrogen ions through reactions with carbonate and aluminum-silicate minerals are required. Along with the hydrogen ions contained in the tailings water the ferrous iron represents a large potential source of acid but the extent to which ferrous iron converts to ferric iron to produce acid is problematic. Detailed hydrogeochemical evaluation of existing contaminant plumes and the performance of laboratory experiments under appropriate redox conditions ore prerequisites for the improvement of predictive models. However, the existing field and laboratory data provide a basis for preliminary predictions of contaminant migration from acidic uranium tailings impoundments.

Drill cores from 15 holes in the West Central Mesabi Range were studied as part of the Lake Superior iron resource investigation begun in 1957 by the Bureau of Mines. Chemical, petrographic, and metallurgical analyses were made to determine grade, mineralogy, magnetic characteristics, and response to beneficiation. Data in this report were developed to provide a better under-standing of the nature and character of low-grade iron ore occurrences, to measure potential of usable ore, and to provide a basis for comparison with bank samples previously taken in the same general area. The average iron content of 4,445 feet of core was 31.8 percent. Iron oxides present were hematite, goethite, and magnetite; the gangue minerals were chiefly quartz, iron silicate, and iron-bearing carbonates.

Application of some by-products of the metals industry which contain plant nutrients to agricultural lands could constitute resource recovery instead of costly disposal. Some industrial by-products contain appreciable concentrations of heavy metal contaminants, such as Cd, Cr, Ni, and Pb. After land application, these metals may be absorbed by plants and enter the human food chain or be leached to groundwaters. Plant uptake of these heavy metals varies with plant species:, soil pH, soil texture, and the particular metal. Certain leafy vegetables can absorb significant amounts of heavy metals, while absorbed metals are usually poorly translocated to cereal grains. Allowable heavy metal concentrations in fertilizers now are not regulated, but EPA is considering such regulations. Heavy metal impurities in animal feed supplements are regulated by the states; so some by-products may not be permitted for this use.
