Iron ore sinter quality depends heavily on the mineralogy, textures and physical structure of the sinter, which is formed upon solidification of the primary sinter melt. The interactions of the initial sinter melt with its surrounding materials will impact on the properties of the primary sinter melt and consequently the solidified structure of the sinter. By using a high-temperature visualisation system, in situ studies have been conducted on the effects of melt compositions (Al2O3, SiO2 and MgO) on the interfacial phenomena of the sinter melt on a natural iron ore substrate. It was found that the melt composition significantly influenced the wettability between the sinter melt and the iron ore substrate. The interactions between the sinter melt and the natural iron ore substrate were also examined. Such interactions can lead to further changes of sinter melt composition and hence the sinter melt properties that, in turn, further affect the wetting behaviour of the sinter melt.CITATION:Ma, M P, Lu, L, Hapugoda, S and Manuel, J R, 2013. Bimetallic Au-Pd catalysts supported on amorphous silica-alumina (ASA) with vary amount of alumina (0, 8, 14, 28 and 100%) were prepared by the simultaneous reduction of palladium and gold precursors by ethanol in the presence of the polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses indicated formation of alloyed Au-Pd particles. Ammonia temperature programmed desorption measurements were performed to monitor the acid strength and the amount of acid sites on the catalysts after their reduction with 10%H2/Ar at 573 K for 1h. The effect of the support acidity on the catalytic activity was investigated in the simultaneous hydrogenation (HYD) of toluene (T) and naphthalene (NP) in the presence of dibenzothiophene (DBT). Coke formation was also determined. Under the selected conditions (P = 5.0 MPa, T = 523 K, WHSV = 41.2 h-1), all the catalysts were resistant to poisoning with 113 ppm of S (as DBT). The hydrogenation activity of toluene and the HDS activity of DBT were found to correlate with the concentration of the medium strength acid sites. The enhancement of the HYD activity and the S- tolerance was related to modifications of the electronic properties of the metal atom upon interaction with the Brönsted acid sites and upon intermetallic interaction.

THE Privateer mine consists of a group of mineral claims situated in the Zeballos area, on the west coast of Vancouver island, approximately 180 miles north of Victoria. Although Zeballos is a comparatively new mining camp, its transportation facilities can be considered exceptionally good. General freight and supplies are brought in by either C.P.R. or Frank Waterhouse steamers from either Victoria or Vancouver. Service by these boats varies from five to ten days and the trip from Victoria takes approximately two days. Passengers may use the C.P.R. boats, or, if speed is essential, they may fly, in which case they have the choice of two flying companies, namely, Canadian Air-ways, Limited, and Ginger Coote Airways. The average flight from Vancouver takes approximately two hours. Excellent unloading facilities are provided at the beach by a government dock for the steamers and a floating dock for aeroplanes. The mine, which is approximately five miles from the beach, is serviced by a fairly good gravel road, which has proved satisfactory for all haulage purposes. Zeballos has the reputation of having one of the heaviest rainfalls on the west coast, but as no accurate records have been kept, no comparisons can be made. H. C. Gunning, in his report, comments on the weather from 1929 to 1932, and one would judge that the practically continuous rainfall did not add to the pleasures of the field work. During the summer of 1938, the opposite condition prevailed and the area had exceptionally dry and pleasant weather. The snowfall is generally light at the lower elevations, but very heavy higher up. No extreme cold weather is encountered during the winter, which is generally short.

Platinum-group metal (PGM) converter matte from the Stillwater Complex, MT, was subjected to chemical and biological leaching in an effort to upgrade the matte by decreasing the Cu and Ni content. Copper and NL extractions were optimized in a two-stage chemical leach. Atmospheric pressure sulfuric acid leaching removed over 90 pct of the Ni and Fe in the first stage, while 95 to 98 pct of the Cu was removed is the second stage using an acidified cupric chloride leach. This two-stage leach, followed by an elemental sulfur removal step, decreased the weight of the matte by 90 pct. The combined Cu and Ni content was reduced from 65 pct to less than 20 pct, while the PGM content was increased from less than 2 pct to 26 pct. Biological oxidation using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans also proved to be an effective method for removing Cu and Ni. Over 90 pct of the sulfide was oxidized and 99 pct of the Cu and Ni were solubilized, leading to a 60 pct reduction of sample mass during the 17 week bio-oxidation of the Stillwater converter matte. The final residue, after removal of jarosite that accumulated during bio-oxidation, contained less than 3 pct combined Cu and Ni and 6 pct MM.

Construction of a new underground parking structure in State College, Pennsylvania, is situated on a site constrained by limited ROW and required excavations ranging in depth from 25 ft to 40 ft. Additional complications included busy surface streets, an active intersection, and numerous underground utilities that could not be disrupted by construction activities. To combat these challenges, an innovative approach for earth retention was designed that combined multiple types of retention systems. The overall system included alternating sections of soil nail walls and a hybrid system of soldier pile walls (consisting of micropiles) that were partially restrained by a soil nail wall in the lower portions of the excavation. Further, due to the limited space within the property limits that inhibited the length of the permanent nails, the wall design team collaborated with the project designers to develop a solution such that the completed wall became an integral part of the final design/construction of the underground parking structure. INTRODUCTION HERE at State College is a mixed-use, high-rise building in State College, Pennsylvania. The 12-strory building has up to 3 levels of below-grade parking, with the above-grade levels consisting of residential and commercial/retail space. The existing property was a parking lot bound by the streets Calder Way to the north, Garner Street to the east, East Beaver Avenue to the south, and Heister Street to the west. The overall property sloped approximately 20 ft in elevation from southeast to northwest. Excavation for the below-grade levels extended 21 ft to 36 ft (6.4 m to 11 m) below street level. During design-development phases of the project, it became evident that due to subsurface conditions and right-of- way limitations, conventional construction techniques would not be feasible. The full perimeter of the excavation would require earth retention including the weak shale bedrock along the bottom of the excavation. The project developer (CA Ventures) and general contractor (Brinkmann) coordinated with the specialty contractor and wall design engineer to find a solution. At this time, Coastal Drilling East (specialty contractor) and Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions (wall design engineer) became involved. The project developer and general contractor were aware they needed an earth retention system, but given the many variables the project faced, a single, straightforward solution would not work in this application.

The Society for Mining Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) has a long and proud history of being the world?s leading resource for the dissemination for technical information regarding the fields of mining and mineral extraction and processing. That reputation was met, and maybe even exceeded, with the programming for the Society?s 2014 Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, UT Feb. 23-26. The meeting drew more than 6,700 attendees to the three-day conference that featured more than 90 technical sessions with 670 presentations. These sessions covered the breadth of the mining and minerals industry, but it was the so-called ?softer issues? that were discussed in the keynote session that kicked off the meeting. The keynote session, ?Community Engagement: Building Partnerships for Mining,? brought together some of the leading voices from the mining industry, as well as some of the top voices from nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) that work in the mining sector. The common ground between the panelists was their dedication to working to ensure a social, economic and environmental balance in the development of mines. ?We wanted to bring these NGOs in to begin a dialogue to see how we can work together,? said SME President Jessica Kogel. ?This is a space that SME has not typically operated in, but one in which SME can bring a technical, scientific voice to the discussion. SME wants to play a leadership role in creating partnerships between the technical, social and economic areas that are crucial to the success of any mining project.? In today?s environment, finding mineral deposits and extracting the minerals in an economically viable manner is just one piece of an increasingly complex puzzle. Earning and maintaining a social license to operate requires careful consideration of local and global impacts. The industry often comes under intense scrutiny when a new project is proposed and, therefore, it must strive to meet the highest ethical and environmental standards. Success requires cooperation and collaboration between the industry, community and NGOs.

The use of electronic detonators in civil tunnelling applications, to reduce vibration in small firings has been successfully utilised for a number of years. As part of the mining industry’s commitment to reducing blast damage during the development cycle in underground mining applications, a series of development blasts using e-Dev™ electronic detonators in a typical mining application was conducted at Resolute’s Mt Wright operations in North Queensland in 2010. Results were based on direct comparisons to the current industry standard of non-electric firings as a baseline, with as many parameters as possible being captured during the trial. Development costs are typically high in most underground mines, especially in capital development headings, which are in waste and therefore of no direct economic value, so by being able to accurately fire to design, costs relating to both ground support requirements and volume of material removed, (and therefore haulage required) can be minimised. A direct comparison of overbreak (ground blasted outside of design) and cast (distance rock thrown from blast) was also made during the trial, as well as close monitoring of the drilling accuracy.

"This paper presents the design of a raft enhanced pile group recently constructed for a hotel development in Perth, WA. At the time of construction in 2016 the hotel was the tallest prefabricated hotel in Australia.The structure covers the entire 12 m by 32 m development footprint, located in an inner city environment, and directly surrounded by existing structures. The small site and lack of space required innovative thinking in terms of the substructure design.The ground conditions comprise a layer of medium dense sand underlain by variable layers of stiff clay, silts and sands. Groundwater was around 1.5 m below ground level.The substructure design was carried out on the basis of a raft enhanced pile group. This allowed the use of much shorter piles than a conventional pile solution, thereby permitting the adoption of CFA piling techniques. This also allowed the raft thickness to be reduced to such that the substructure works were maintained above the groundwater level.The design was carried out in general accordance with the Australian Standard AS 2159 and using conventional piled raft design techniques involving iteration between elastic soil settlement software and structural analysis software until spring reactions were obtained with convergence of the two models. Following this springs were introduced to model piles in the structure.Due to the variable nature of the ground and resulting uncertainty in pile base capacity it was not considered appropriate to design the system as a pile assisted raft with piles loaded beyond their ultimate geotechnical design strength. As a result, all piles were designed based on a maximum load maintained within the elastic response region, with the majority of the load taken by the piles. However, the combined capacity of the raft and the piles allowed for a saving in pile lengths and numbers of around 40%, when compared to a conventional pile group designed in accordance with the Australian Standard AS 2159.The raft slab was monitored during construction in order to check the actual displacements against the design displacements. At the end of construction, the settlements were found to be within 2 mm of the design values.INTRODUCTIONThe Wellington Street area of Perth in the CBD is undergoing recent regeneration which includes the King’s Square development, Perth Arena and the Wellington Street Bus Station. The proposed hotel development is close to the recent developments on a Lot previously occupied by a low rise development. Due to the small size and constrained nature of the site, the substructure design for the tower needed to take into account available space and the impact of the works on adjacent properties. This paper presents reasoning for the choice of substructure design, details of the design methodology adopted, results from limited post construction monitoring and potential improvements that could be considered for similar future developments."

Despite a global slowdown in most mining sectors, Caterpillar, the world?s largest mining equipment maker continues to forge ahead with new, and improved offerings to the global mining industry. On Nov. 10, as part of its Loading and Hauling Mining Focus Session at its Tinaja Hills proving grounds south of Tucson, AZ, Caterpillar unveiled to customers and media its two latest mining products, the 994K wheel loader and 6020B hydraulic shovel. The Caterpillar 994K wheel loader builds on a nearly 25-year history of the 994 model but with one noticeable difference ? the 994K is bigger ? much bigger. Weighing in at 239,142 kg (527,218 lb) the 994 K is up to 20 percent larger and comes with up to 30 percent increase in payload capacity. This behemoth of a machine is currently being tested at Caterpillar?s Tucson Proving Grounds, Anglo Gold Ashanti?s Cripple Creek and Victor gold mine in Colorado and Taseko?s Gibraltor copper and molybdenum mine in British Columbia, Canada.

"In order to establish some links between the 22 specimens found on the site of Les Forges du St. Maurice, their slag inclusions have been analyzed by electron microprobe. Comparison between their contents of various specific oxides allowed us to segregate them into two major groups and even to isolate two sub-groups possibly characterized by some equilibrium between their oxides and/or the type of ores used.In all probability, limes/one coupled systematically with a soil rich in hydrated aluminum silicates was used as a flux.Based upon the existence of a pseudo equilibrium between the slag and the metal, the elaboration of the bulk of the specimens can be ascribed to the indirect rather than the direct method whereas the process temperature can be estimated at at least /400°C.RESUMEDans le but d'etablir des liens entre les 22 objects provenant des Forges du St-Maurice, leurs inclusions de scories ont été analysées par microsonde. The construction of a water treatment plant in Dandenong, Victoria, required detention tanks and a pumping well. The design provided by the Engineer used conventional rectangular cast-in-situ reinforced concrete walls within a sheet piled cofferdam. It was decided to construct the tank and shaft using the diaphragm walling technique as an alternative and, for the shaft in particular, this involved a “circular wall”. Except where cutters are used, joints in diaphragm walls have to be made between colinear panels, with waterproofing provided by dumb-bell water stops held within trapezoidal forms. This means that the circle has to be approximated by a number of straight sides, which in this case was twelve. The requirement was to design the reinforcement for the strange shaped panels. Finite element analysis was used, in the first stage using an axisymmetric model to determine the profile of lateral earth pressures with depth. In the second stage a horizontal slice was modelled, without gravity which normally operates from the top to the bottom of the page. By considering appropriate possible earth pressures at different depths, a range of bending moments was calculated, which was used by the structural engineers to design the rebar. The tanks were successfully constructed, and inclinometers were installed in both the tank and the shaft. Measured deflection profiles show that the design was moderately conservative.

The United Eastern Mining Co.'s property is in the Oatman, Gold Roads mining district of Mohave County, Ariz. The mine and mill are 26 mi. (41.8 km.) southwest of Kingman, the nearest railway connection. The ore consists of a mixture of calcite and quartz with some andesite. The values, which are mainly gold, alloyed with approximately 34 per cent., by weight, of silver, are extremely fine so that fine grinding is a most important factor in extraction. The milling process, briefly, consists of single-stage, coarse-crushing, two-stage ball milling in cyanide solution, followed by combined mechanical and air agitation, and by straight counter-current decantation. The Merrill zinc-dust precipitation method is used to recover the values, and is preceded by the Crowe vacuum treatment of the solution. The most notable features of the plant are the absence of filters, and the use of short peb mills loaded with steel balls, for fine grinding. As originally designed, the capacity of the mill was to be 200 tons per day, although the grinding end was to be capable of handling double that amount. By adding extra agitators and thickeners and by some alterations to the grinding end, the daily capacity has been raised to 285 tons. This, it is hoped, may be increased to 300 tons during the warm months of the present year. "The Lower and Middle River Des Peres (LMRDP) CSO Storage Tunnel is the largest single component of Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District’s (MSD) CSO control system improvements planned to meet consent decree requirements for MSD’s Lemay Service Area. The 13.7-km (8.5-mile) long, deep, hard rock tunnel will have a finished diameter of 9.1 m (30 ft). Beginning at the Lemay Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), the alignment follows the channelized River Des Peres to the outfall of the existing Forest Park tubes, as indicated in Fig. 1.The project includes three construction shafts, 34 intakes and a deep, cavern-style pump station located adjacent to the WWTP. The tunnel will be driven from the Defense Mapping shaft to the Macklind shaft. Another shaft is located near the midpoint at the tunnel in River Des Peres Park.The Forest Park intake, located at the upstream end of the tunnel just beyond the Macklind shaft, is a large, tangential vortex intake structure. With a peak flow rate of 170 m3/s (6,000 cfs), it will have a 6.1-m (20-ft) diameter dropshaft to transfer flow into the tunnel.The project includes another three large tangential vortex-flow intake structures with peak flow rates ranging from 28 to 44.5 m3/s (990 to 1,570 cfs). These large intakes are located at points where three large sewers (formerly creeks) enter the River Des Peres. Dropshaft diameters for these intakes range from 3 to 3.7 m (10 to 12 ft) in diameter. The 30 remaining intakes are smaller tangential vortex-style, with dropshafts in the range of 0.8 to 1.7 m (30 to 66 in.) in diameter.Each intake structure drops flow into a deaeration chamber constructed adjacent to the tunnel at tunnel depth. Intake tunnels transfer flow from the deaeration chambers to the main tunnel. Most of the intake tunnels are short. However, two are long. The Glaise Creek tunnel will extend 762 m (2,500 ft) from the main tunnel to the Alaska Park intake, while the Rock Creek tunnel will extend 823 m (2,700 ft) from the main tunnel to the Rock Creek intake. The dewatering pump station, located at the downstream end of the tunnel, will be built inside a large, horseshoe-shaped cavern with two access shafts. Excavation of the cavern and its access shafts will be performed by the tunnel contractor. Build-out of the dewatering pump station will be performed under separate contract."

Cassiterite was discovered in Coosa County, Ala. in 1880 by Judge John S. Bentley. Since that time intensive surface prospecting has revealed the presence of cassiterite in pegmatite bodies that occur in a zone about 20 miles long and 3 miles wide. Numerous trenches and test pits and several shafts were sunk, and one attempt was made to nine and concentrate the cassiterite commercially. The problem of a domestic tin industry and the question of the extent of the Alabama tin deposits have long been of public interest and concern. The deposits have been examined by numerous geologists and several governmental agencies, including the Geological Survey of Alabama, the Geological Survey and the Bureau of, Mines. of the Department of Interior, and others. The Bureau of Mines and the owners of the properties, Charles A. Dean and Robert A. Russell, investigated the Coosa County tin deposits under a cooperative agreement from October 1, 1948, to June 10, 1949. Sixteen hand trenches totaling 527 linear feet and 33 machine trenches totaling 6,780 linear feet were dug. Two shafts wore sunk for a total of 72 feet, and 44.4 feet of drifting was done. Thirty-one diamond-drill holes totaling 2,776 feet were drilled.. Four hundred thirty samples, representing 1,192.6 linear feet, were taken for assay and wore analyzed by the Southern Experiment Station at Tuscaloosa, Ala.

The growing demand for iron ore from Western Australia has led to an increased focus on the development of magnetite and lower grade iron ore deposits. The need to process and beneficiate the ore from these projects can result in the generation of significant quantities of iron ore tailings over the life of a project. Over the coming decades, the management of iron ore tailings will become a significant aspect of the mining landscape in Western Australia.The tailings generated from iron ore projects differ signifi cantly from other mineral tailings currently produced in Western Australia. Iron ore tailings are generated on a scale not matched by any other mineral process and can often contain asbestiform or potentially acid forming components. New iron ore projects are coming under increased environmental scrutiny because of their large scale operations and the sensitive environments in which they occur. This combination of factors creates some unique challenges for the management of tailings generated by iron ore mining in Western Australia.This paper presents the fi ndings of two studies conducted in recent years to overcome the challenges posed by iron ore tailings. The paper discusses the role of laboratory testing in the development of management strategies for asbestiform minerals in tailings. It also presents a numerical modelling approach for evaluating the rates of rise in the storage of magnetite tailings. The paper concludes by outlining how the findings of these studies can be applied to reduce tailings management costs, lower risks and improve environmental outcomes for the management of tailings from iron ore mining.

Brazil is one of the most outstanding examples of economic development of our time. Its amazing growth record is substantiated by a GNP which has increased at an average rate of 92% for the period 1968-1970 and estimates for 1971 range from 11.7-12.5%. Hence, this growth, coupled with a more relaxed attitude of the Brazilian government towards foreign participation in business opportunities and the remittance of profits out of the country, has caused many exploration companies to reevaluate the potential of Brazil. Despite recent press notices and publicity, Brazil is still not a mining country in the tradition of Canada or Australia. It is still basically an agriculture and manufacturing country.

The mining methods and practices used at the Young zinc mine, American Zinc Co. of Tennessee, have resulted in a low-cost, high-yield operation. Zinc ore (sphalerite) occurs in limestone-dolomite beds of the Kingsport Formation and is mined by modified room and pillar method. Utilizing trackless mining equipment which incorporates a high degree of flexibility, this operation has had a steady increase in productivity.

"The tungsten-bismuth-molybdenum deposit in southwestern New Brunswick occurs in greisenized and silicified tuffite * and feldspar porphyry in and adjacent to volcanic necks. The ore minerals occur as veins and veinlets and as disseminated grains in gangue. These minerals can be grouped into three assemblages. Assemblage 1 consists of oxides and phosphates of W, Ti, Fe, Nb, Sn, Ta and rare-earth elements, with the main minerals being deposited in the sequence wolframite, rutile, cassiterite. Assemblage 2 consists of arsenopyrite, molybdenite and bismuth, and assemblage 3 of sulphides with minor cassiterite and arsenopyrite. Sphalerite is the main sulphide mineral, but it contains minute inclusions of copper-tin- and indium-bearing minerals. Textural relations suggest that most of the elements can be recovered from this ore by conventional mineral beneficiation and extraction methods, but a variety of techniques must be employed. It is expected that the wolframite and molybdenite can be recovered satisfactorily, but poor recoveries are expected for bismuth and cassiterite. A sphalerite concentrate can be readily obtained by flotation, but it would contain a wide variety of elements. It is suggested that leaching be used to recover the bismuth and the elements in the sphalerite concentrate."

The MicrocelTM column flotation technology has been developed based on the fundamental understanding that the first-order flotation rate constant increases approximately as the inverse cube of bubble size. In this technology, bubbles in the range of 100-400 pm are generated by pumping aerated slurry through an in-line static mixer. The high-shear agitation provided by the in-line mixer produces small air bubbles without requiring large frother additions. This column has been tested successfully for processing a variety of non-metallic minerals including kaolin clay, graphite, phosphate, and feldspar.

"Cyanide is a well proven, effective lixiviant that has been utilised for centuries in gold extraction processes. Despite being used in close to 90% of gold processing plants, cyanide leaching is still being scrutinised due to its toxic nature. With governments tightening the regulations on cyanide management, and recently erected sites situated closer to community and environment, leach waste and tailings treatment has become increasingly important. Gekko Systems has worked with engineering companies and directly with gold producers to provide technical services and supply complete modular cyanide destruction (detox) systems for plants leaching both run-of-mine ore and high sulphide gravity and flotation concentrates. Although similar in principle, the different materials presented unique challenges in design and implementation. Similar to designing any section of a processing plant, the development of the cyanide destruction plant design began with laboratory test work to simulate the full scale operation. This paper focusses on the laboratory test work and how other critical factors such as geographical location, logistics, and local community play a role in the process design and construction. Two design and supply cases are discussed in this paper; one treating intensive cyanidation concentrate leach tails and one treating whole ore CIL tails. Although these plants both use the SO2/O2 process, each presented different challenges in laboratory testing and plant design, resulting in variations in final implementation including reagent choice, oxygen supply, and process control.INTRODUCTIONSince 1887, cyanide has played a large part in the beneficiation of gold from gold bearing ores. Cyanide is used to solubilise gold into solution, and is typically added in excess to maintain the leaching process. Some or all the excess cyanide can often be recovered and reused in the process however chemical destruction of cyanide is often necessary to manage cyanide levels in the tailings storage facility (TSF)."
