Combining ultramafic mine tailings and acidic mine drainage via mineral carbonation to sequester carbon dioxide, presents an opportunity to minimise waste on mine sites. Low pH mine water with trace element concentrations can be effectively treated by high magnesium mine tailings, a useful source of finely ground reactive matrix. By using milled tailings for mineral carbonation, there are negligible energy requirements for communition of ore rocks to reduce particle size. This study aimed to assess the technical applicability of reacting ultramafic tailings and acidic mine water through mineral carbonation technology in the mining industry. Dissolution has been identified as the rate limiting stage in mineral carbonation; hence the study focused on identifying optimal dissolution conditions. Ultramafic tailings (particle size <100 µm) derived from serpentinite ore, were reacted with a typical mine water that was synthesised in the laboratory. Through variances in the solid to liquid ratios and temperature of dissolution, a maximum five per cent magnesium dissolution efficiency was reached at 50 g/L and 100°C. The acidic mine water was neutralised (from pH <2 to pH ~6) and iron, copper and zinc ion concentrations reduced significantly during the formation of solid precipitates. Carbonation was undertaken by injecting carbon dioxide into the magnesium-rich solution to form stable carbonates. The experimental work demonstrated proof of concept; however, dissolution efficiency and carbon dioxide sequestration was low, indicating that further research would be required before larger scale implementation.CITATION:Malli, H, Bouzalakos, S and Timms, W, 2015. "Electromagnetic surveys were conducted at the BXL Bulk Explosives Limited Mixing Plant andsurrounding area to characterize runoff from the site and possible impacts of salinity. The BXL Plant is located at the edge of a depressional area and any escape of soluble ions, such as nitrates, would have ended up in the slough to the west of the plant. Two electromagnetic (EM) instruments were used in the survey. A Geonics EM 3 1 was used in October 1997 and in June 1998, a new multifrequency instrument, a GSSI GEM 300 was also tested. Both instruments were individually mounted on a plastic sled with Teflon runners and towed with an ATV quad. Position was determined using a Trimble Pro XL global positioning system (GPS) with a real time correction mode Landstar receiver for an accuracy of about *l m. Both GPS and EM instruments were set to collect data at 1 second intervals. The quadrature maps for both instruments showed essentially the same information, namely of very high conductivity, appearing to emanate from the mixing plant. The levels of conductivity were highest where the saline water appeared to pool, at the southern end of the slough. Soil sampling locations were identified from the EM maps and navigated to using the real time GPS. Composite samples were collected by hand using a Dutch auger, from two locations, in increments of O-1 5, 15-30, 30-60 and 60- 90 cm. The analysis of the soil samples indicated a complete absence of nitrate or ammonium ions; the major anion was sulphate, indicating naturally saline subsoil conditions. The GEM 300 made the collection of data more efficient, as only one pass was required to collect the data from four depth intervals. The EM survey combined with the real time GPS allowed rapid characterization of the site with respect to soil salinity and proved to be cost-effective for Phase l/ Phase 2 site assessments and targeting sampling locations."

Progressive improvements in crusher design, screening efficiency, and operating experience along with the downsizing of many taconite operations has resulted in the abilitv of some crushing plants to produce a substantially finer product. This finer product opens the possibility of replacing the rods in the rod mill with balls as is the current practice at Sydvaranger, Norway. If this replacement could be accomplished substantial savings associated with metal wear and the elimination of rod charging may be realized. The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of a mill charged with rods with the performance of the same mill charged with balls at the pilot scale. The first objective was to establish whether we could achieve the same throughput rate at the same mesh-of-grind in a mill in which the rod media has been replaced by balls. The second point was to determine whether the ball media would create a significant tramp oversize problem.

THE need for more efficient utilization of labor in the metal-mining industry has been the subject of several recent editorials in the mining press, and one attractive possibility for such improvement lies in the designing of future milling plants particularly with economy of man-power in mind. We are accustomed to think of mill design as the selection and coordinated arrangement of process equipment, but if labor is to be efficiently utilized it must be given early consideration in planning the new mill. There are three good reasons for economizing in labor: (I) to reduce costs, not only in the form of wages but also in housing, hospital, welfare, and other obligations that a company accepts when a new man is added to the payroll; (2) to prepare for recurrent periods of manpower shortage, during which a well-designed plant can manage to get along with skeleton crews; (3) because a milling plant that must depend upon an inordinately large labor force for its operation and maintenance is certain to be inefficient in other respects, for many of the shortcomings in design that make necessary the excessive use of labor are generally not corrected merely by having too many men. A simple example of this is a poorly designed ore-feeding system: if this is inadequate to the extent that one man must be constantly unclogging feed chutes, it may help the situation to put two men or three at this task instead of one, but the feed rate will still be inconstant. First of the factors that affect labor saving is the location of the mill. This is often determined by transportation costs alone, and as a result the mill may be placed close to the mine regardless of the nature of the terrain. The designer must then adapt his layout to the conditions, favorable or not. This happens often at small properties, where capital investment may seem more important than operating expense. In most instances, however, a mill site carefully selected for the advantages it gives the designer in laying out the plant is the most economical in the long run, even if it involves a slight increase in cost of ore haulage. Given some freedom of choice, the design engineer may be able to find just the piece of ground that provides the proper gradient for the needs of the flowsheet, permits installation of essential yards and trackage, and perhaps supplies an excellent site for a tailing dam. Further justification for having placed the mill not too close to the mine sometimes emerges only years later as an opportunity to treat ores from other properties. When it is known from the beginning that the new mill will serve a number of scattered mines, a free choice of mill site is naturally stimulated. Exploration for high-value massive sulfide deposits on the ocean floor typically commences with a search for chimney fields in appropriate geological settings, followed by collection and assaying of standing chimneys. Individual chimney fields are generally too small in aggregate volume to constitute viable resources in their own right. Unless numerous small fields occur in reasonably close proximity, presence of plentiful sub-seafloor mineralization with acceptable metal tenor is the more likely requirement for potential exploitation. Expensive drilling is required to prove up mounds of collapsed chimneys, or dilatory sheets and veins or replacements of massive/semimassive sulfide (?stockworks? or ?manto?-like bodies) in underlying host rock. Where multiple targets have been defined, as many parameters as possible are desirable to help rank them for drilling.

"A world class rare metals ore deposit in Africa belongs to a massive granite type poly-metallic pyrochlore-niobium resource. Successful project development in realizing the resource is vital to Africa’s economy and pyrochlore processing technology.The ore properties are quite complex due to the presence of varieties of valuable minerals, fine dissemination and intimate association of minerals and the relative abundance of easy-floatable minerals. The separation of pyrochlore from zircon, calcite and mica is generally considered difficult. Whilst studies have previously been conducted by several independent institutions overseas, no satisfactory process has yet been developed to date for the ore deposit—possibly due to the process designed being too complex; high cost of regents; lower performance.Based on process mineralogy study and extensive testwork, the authors have in recent years developed a new technology—“De-slime—Iron-rejection—Zircon (with calcite) and Calcite reverse flotation—Pyrochlore flotation”. The flow-sheet is characterized by ?1prior removal of slimes and iron minerals; ?2 Zircon (with calcite) and Calcite reverse flotation; and ?3Pyrochlore flotation applying new type of chelating collector GYX3 developed by GZRINM in conjunction with selected regulators and depressants.The process involved in the new technology is simple to implement and facilitates stable operation; the flotation reagent regime is easily adaptable; the cost of main reagent is lower largely because it is easy to manufacture and is environmental friendly. Laboratory test results demonstrated that, for raw ore assaying 0.35% Nb2O5, 0.03% Ta2O5 and 0.45% ZrO2, pyrochlore concentrate grade of >35% Nb2O5 could be obtained with >74% recovery. Meanwhile, the Ta2O5 content in pyrochlore concentrate could be recycled, and ZrO2 recovery >50% could be achieved in zircon concentrate assaying ZrO2>63%—significantly improving the technical-economic indicator. These results were verified in pilot trials of 1.44t/d throughput. The paper presents the new technology in whole, summarizes the key factors affecting its performance and discusses in simple terms the mechanism of separation."

"In June, 2018 Lalor Mine experienced a catastrophic blade failure of its No. 2 main exhaust fan. Over the following weeks several key changes were made to the auxiliary ventilation system to allow for continued production while the exhaust fans were repaired. Issues encountered during the period of reduced ventilation, and how they were addressed, are analyzed. The suspected causes of the exhaust fan blade failure and how risk was mitigated during the reconstruction are discussed. Key findings and lessons learned are summarized.INTRODUCTIONLalor Mine, owned and operated by Hudbay is an underground zinc, gold, and copper mine located in northern Manitoba. The mine workings extend to a depth of 1090 metres below surface and is ventilated using a push-pull system. The mine exhausts through the main exhaust raise; equipped with two, 2,500 HP fans and upcasts through a portal located at the neighboring mine, Chisel North. Air is supplied to Lalor Mine through four intake fans: The Production Shaft Downcast (two, 250 HP), Lalor Downcast (one, 400 HP), and Chisel Downcast (one, 600 HP) fans (Figure 1). In June 2018, Lalor was scheduled to produce approximately 4,000 tpd.On June 20, 2018 at 2:52 pm Lalor Mine experienced a fault on the Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) for Exhaust Fan No. 1. Time would be needed to complete the necessary repairs. The No. 2 exhaust fan was ramped up from 525 rpm to 800 rpm, 90% of its capacity, in order to maintain underground ventilation. At 4:46 pm, approximately two hours after the rpm was increased, exhaust fan No. 2 experienced a catastrophic blade failure. The forces from the blade failure resulted in the top half of the fan housing being thrown 50 metres from where it was installed; with several large sections of fan blade being thrown further (Figure 2)."

"INTRODUCTION At various times, North Carolina has supplied small quantities of brown-iron ore to the furnace o the South. Between 1917 and 1920, the quantity reported to the Federal Geological Survey was 126,000 tons. Most of this came from Cherokee County. 3/In furtherance of the program initiated by the Bureau of Mines to develop additional reserve of iron ore during the emergency, the Cherokee County deposits were examined by an engineer 4/ of the Bureau of Mines, and work was recommended on,12 properties.The project was begun in April 1944 and continued intermittently until April 1945, when work was stopped. During this period, eight properties were explored, and an additional property was mapped.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. This work was undertaken to investigate the thermodynamic and kinetic feasibility of using hot sulfur dioxide bearing gases from smelting processes to selectively sulfate the nickel in nickel laterite ores for subsequent extraction in water. The environmental benefits of this approach, as opposed to releasing the gas to the atmosphere, and the economic benefit of directly utilizing the SO2 rather than converting it to sulfuric acid are strong drivers for such a process. A thermodynamic analysis indicated that selective sulfation of the nickel could be feasible under appropriate conditions and these were explored through a series of laboratory scale experiments. Laterite samples were reacted at temperatures between 500 and 800°C with an equilibrated mixture of sulfur dioxide, oxygen and nitrogen in a fixed bed reactor. Tests were conducted on saprolitic ore from Bulong, Western Australia:, limonitic ore from New Caledonia and gamieritic ore from Indonesia. Nickel extractions were highest from the limonite and relatively low from the other ores. The maximum selective extraction of nickel from the limonite in a single stage sulfation was 73%. Sulfation of other elements present in the laterites was also examined. A two-stage process was also identified which involved sulfation using a strong sulfation potenrial followed by weaker sulfation potential to attempt to convert ferric sulfate formed in the first stage to ferric oxide. This increased the extraction for the limonite ore to around 84% Ni, 95% Co and 2% Fe. Direct sulfation of laterite could be feasible in locations where sulfide smelting or roasting operations are relatively close to laterite deposits.

The demand for steel products in modern society is prompting the iron ore industry to optimise their operations to ensure sustainability of fines and lump products. One of the key components in the iron ore transportation chain are belt conveyors. The energy consumption of modern belt conveyor systems has reduced considerably over the past few decades, however, there is still significant scope for further reductions, especially when heavily loaded long overland belt conveyors are considered. A new rail based continuous bulk material transportation system has been developed by researchers at the University of Newcastle to reduce the energy consumption of heavily loaded and long overland conveyors. The Rail-Running Belt Conveyor technology is a state-of-the-art continuous belt conveying technology which provides an innovative and novel departure from conventional continuous bulk material transportation systems with significant energy and economic benefits. This paper presents an overview of a Rail-Running Belt Conveyor variant which considers an enclosed belt. Enclosed belt conveying has the benefits of encapsulating the bulk material, and thereby reducing dust emissions and moisture ingress, in addition to being able to negotiate smaller radius horizontal and vertical curves leading to greater flexibility. To quantify the primary differences between conventional conveying technologies, the Denver office of thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions (USA) developed a case study for an 11 km long conveyor. The conveyor design throughput was 2750 t/h and included a small net elevation loss of 10 m. When considering CAPEX the Rail-Running Pipe Conveyor equipment supply cost is approximately 45 per cent of the cost of a conventional pipe conveyor, while savings upwards of US$50M emerge for CAPEX combined with five years of OPEX. The savings vary with the topography and density of the bulk commodity, with iron ore generally showing increased savings because the high bulk density increases rubber losses in conventional conveyors.

There are tens of thousands of inactive mine features in 274 mining districts in New Mexico (including coal, uranium, metals, and industrial minerals districts). However, many of these mines have not been inventoried or prioritized for reclamation. Many of these mines have existing mine wastes, generated during mineral production, which could have potential for critical minerals, especially since the actual mineral production was generally for precious and base metals and not critical minerals. The purpose of this project is to characterize and estimate the critical mineral endowment of mine wastes and “beta-test” USGS sampling procedures. This project is important to the state of New Mexico because critical mineral resources must be identified before land exchanges, withdrawals or other land use decisions are made by government officials. Future mining of mine wastes that potentially contain critical minerals will directly benefit the economy of New Mexico. Possible re-mining of mine wastes could clean up these sites and pay for reclamation. Furthermore, this project will include training of younger, professional geologists and students in economic and reclamation geology by the PIs.

Proper employment of numerical stress analysis design tools is based on the demonstrated ability of a model to capture key elements of the geologic site model and accurately simulate how these elements interact with a mine design. While these tools have progressed markedly, they are, at heart, a gross simplification of the abundant complexity of a natural setting and its response to mining. A generic deep longwall site model was developed that includes aspects of the geology of deep coal mines in the Wasatch Plateau and Book Cliffs coal fields of Utah. The site model contains a set of common features and observations of how these features typically respond to mining. This site model was the basis for evaluating use of empirical, boundary element and volume element stress analysis tools to analyze the distribution of stress around a deep longwall panel. More specifically, this evaluation examined shifting of stress to panel abutments and gob, distribution of stress in the abutment and deformation and failure of bridging strata. Measurements of abutment stress changes at two sites in the Wasatch Plateau region were used to illustrate model calibration. Overall, these comparisons highlight the considerable differences between methods. Volume element tools can incorporate considerable detail and have fewer underlying assumptions, but this detail carries a considerable computational cost. Boundary element tools are much more efficient. However, this efficiency comes at the cost of added assumptions. These assumptions were challenged by the presence of a strong sandstone unit in the overburden, leading to boundary element results that depart significantly from volume element results. Empirical rules are the simplest, but are even more burdened by assumptions, many of which are implicit in underlying cases. Insight into the nature and impact of underlying assumptions in each method is essential to the proper use of results in mine design.

The commentary is intended to highlight project-specific items the specification writer should consider during development of the specification. In some sections, typical values are presented to indicate common practice, and these values may be changed to reflect project-specific requirements. The commentary should be removed before using the specification for a project. 1. SCOPE The work consists of designing, furnishing, installing, and testing helical piles used to support foundation loads (compression, tension and lateral), and any ancillary materials (e.g., load transfer devices, etc.) according to the project plans provided and these specifications. Unless otherwise noted, the installing contractor shall provide all labor, tools, equipment and materials necessary to install the required piles. The parties referred to in this specification are as follows: • The Owner is the property owner. • The Owner’s representative is the individual or firm hired by the Owner to design and oversee the overall project. • The pile designer is the individual or firm generally hired by the installing contractor to design the helical piles. • Installing contractor installs and tests (if necessary) the helical piles, and possibly tasks associated with the project. It is important to clearly define the roles and responsibilities of every party on each project to promote good communication and reduce potential for contractual misunderstandings. Different types of contractual vehicles (design-build, value engineering, etc.) require different roles and responsibilities for the various parties, which should be considered in specification development. The Owner will provide suitable access to the construction site for the installing contractor’s personnel and equipment. Unless specifically noted otherwise in the contract documents, the Owner will remove and replace any structures, utilities, pavements, landscaping or other surficial improvements in the work area as necessary to facilitate the work. The Owner will be responsible for overall construction oversight to minimize potential for developing unsafe conditions. The 2-mm butt joints of ZE41A-T5 sand castings were laser welded using 1.6 mm EZ33A-T5 filler wire and a continuous wave Nd:YAG system at a power of 4 kW, surface defocusing and various welding speeds, Compared with the base metal, the fusion zone showed significant grain refinement due to high cooling rate, No grain coarsening was observed in the heat affected zone (HAZ). The porosity area percentage and total solidification crack length in the fusion zone (FZ) were reduced as the welding speed increased from 4 to 7 m/min, Fusion zone area, total penetration depth, and weld width decreased with increased welding speed, The hardness in the FZ was similar to or higher than the base metal after a natural aging of about one year, but there was a drop in the hardness of the HAZ, The HAZ width decreased with increasing the welding speed, Tensile test showed that a joint efficiency of approximately 75 ? 90 % was obtained.

The Friedensville zinc mine of The New Jersey Zinc Company is located about four miles south of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in the Saucon Valley, an infolded and down faulted block of Cambro-Ordovician carbonate sediments surrounded by hills of pre-Cambrian gneiss and Cambrian quartzite except where breached by Saucon Creek at its entrance into the Lehigh River. The Beekmantown formation of lower Ordovician age is the host for zinc and limonite ores, the former occurring in the lower dolomitic portion thereof and the latter in the upper interbedded dolomite and limestone portion of the section. The Beekmantown is overlain unconformably by the Jacksonburg of middle Ordovician age and according to Miller (2) underlain conformably by about 2500 feet of Cambrian dolomites and 200 feet of the basal Cambrian Hardyston quartzite. Igneous rocks, younger than the Cambro-Ordovician carbonate rocks, are absent in the vicinity of the ore deposits. The major structure is a N60°E-trending saddle-shaped doubly plunging anticline overturned to the north. A syncline lies to the north of the anticline. A thrust fault of substantial displacement repeats the south limb of the anticline. The ore consists of sphalerite and pyrite, along with gangue dolomite and quartz, filling and replacing the sedimentary type matrix of a strata-bound solution collapse breccia in the dolomitic portion of the lower Beekmantown. This breccia was produced in pre-Jacksonburg time as a consequence of uplift, erosion, and development of a karst topography and subsurface drainage system in the Beekmantown. Deposits of both zinc and limonite are present on the vertical north limb, on the crest and on the gently dipping (25°) south limb of the Friedensville anticline; consequently, there is no preferred structural setting for mineralization. Rather this distribution supports the view that the folding is post-ore. Features confirming this view are the development of flow cleavage in the breccia matrix, the deformation of some of the sphalerite, and the fracturing of the pyrite mineralization therein. There is nothing to indicate that the age of mineralization is other than Ordovician and older than Taconic deformation. In the absence of intrusive igneous activity younger than the ore host, the writer suggests that submarine volcanic exhalations associated with the volcanic activity recorded in the eastern eugeosynclinal facies of the Ordovician may be the source of the metal ions.

In fact, sulphur is so important that there has been an increasing tendency in recent years to measure industrial growth in terms of sulphur consumption.The uncertainty of obtaining adequate supplies •of elemental sulphur from the Frasch-mined domes. of Texas and Louisiana in the United States led all countries in 1950 to seek alternative sources of supply of this necessary element.Canadian industry has been supplied, for many years, with most of its sulphur requirements by United States Frasch-mined sulphur. World demand for this sulphur has necessitated the imposition of controls on its distribution, as production has not kept pace with demand. Until the third quarter of 1950, Canadian manufacturers of pulp and paper, heavy chemicals, explosives, and textiles •experienced little difficulty in obtaining their needs of elemental sulphur from the United States. However, at that time, low producers' stocks and declining reserves threatened to reduce shipments from producers, with the prospect of a continuing shortage for some time. These conditions, together with higher prices, stimulated the search for alternative sources of supply in Canada."

"Early in the design stage of Meadowlands Xanadu, the client’s project director informed me that “after construction, nobody is going to come to Xanadu to see the foundations.” My response was, “Well, that’s good, because the only reason someone would come to see the foundations is if there is a problem with them.” The client’s real message was clear: the money for the project would be better spent on architectural design components and interior finishes that would attract high-end tenants and entertainment seekers. The foundations, however, were challenging. The sheer size of the Xanadu development, the varying depths to rock, the loading conditions associated with the different structures, and the construction sequencing required the use of multiple deep foundation types and specialty foundation contractors. Xanadu, when completed, will consist of over 2.5 million sq ft of entertainment venues, restaurants and retail stores; America’s first i n d o o r s n o w dome; North America’s tallest (287 ft high) Ferris wheel; and four parking decks. Finished grades for Xanadu were essentially within about 1 to 2 ft of existing grades at the site, except for a 5 acre wetlands area, which received about 8 ft of new fill. Before the current construction, the approximate 75-acre Xanadu site was occupied by the Continental Airlines (now Izod) Arena, on-grade parking lots and the wetlands area. The Arena property is part of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority (NJSEA) Meadowlands Sports Complex, which also includes Giants Stadium and the Racetrack, and is located in East Rutherford, N. J. Subsurface ConditionsThe site subsurface conditions include fill materials underlain by organic silt and peat (former marsh deposits or “meadowmat”), varved clay, glacial till and shale bedrock. The Xanadu site had been a marsh until the Sports Complex was created by filling in the early 1970s. The fill consists of dredged materials from Lower New York Harbor imported by hydraulic pipeline from the Hudson River. The fill also includes “historic fill,” defined as nonindigenous material deposited to raise the topographic elevation of a site, such as construction debris and other nonhazardous solid waste, and was generally encountered in thicknesses ranging from 8 ft to 18 ft. Within the previously developed portion of the site, a layer of marsh deposits consisting of peat and organic silt was encountered beneath the fill in thicknesses ranging from two ft to seven ft. Within the existing wetlands area, the marsh deposits were up to 10 ft below existing grade. The varved clay stratum was six ft to 36 ft thick. The depth to shale rock increases from approximately 15 ft near the west side of the site to approximately 80 ft near the south side. Groundwater was tidally influenced and varied from about 6 to 12 feet below both existing and proposed grade."
