The mining industry consumes huge water volumes and the waste streams typically contain sulfate, which has caused problems to many operations around the world. Discharge of sulfate to fresh waters is being restricted as the sulfate load increases salinity and causes problems when sulfate is reduced to toxic H2S by natural bacteria. To reduce fresh water consumption, internal water recycling had become a necessity in metallurgical processes. However, the recycling causes accumulation of sulfate and other components in water, causing problems to process performance and increases scaling in piping and equipment. Few technically feasible water treatment processes exist in the market that can be applied to decrease sulfate concentration below gypsum saturation level: biological sulfate reduction, membrane separation, ion exchange, evaporation and chemical precipitation. Some of these technologies are effective for treating wastewater, but there is typically a highly concentrated sulfate fraction left requiring still further treatment. Outotec has developed a sulfate removal solution, Outotec Ettringite process, which allows flexible control of residual sulfate concentration, thereby opening doors for increased water recycle within processes and control of the sulfate in discharged waters. In this article the results and benefits of this novel process along with examples of operating costs are presented.

Hauling trucks are important part of equipment fleets for large earthmoving operations such as those encountered in dams and highway construction projects. This paper presents an automated methodology for tracking and estimating productivity of hauling trucks fleet operations in near-real-time. Recent advancement in automated site data acquisition technologies made their use in tracking and monitoring of construction operations feasible. However, these technologies fail to track hauling truck fleets due to the change in the cut and fill locations from one cycle to another; making tracking and progress reporting difficult and inaccurate. In addition, there is very little work done utilizing data sensed directly from equipment, for example sensing when truck dumping bed is raised during the dumping process. The technologies deployed in the developed method are Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and equipment control sensors. Low cost passive RFID tags are attached to hauling trucks and fixed RFID readers are attached to loaders or excavators. The read range of the used RFID tag is centimeters, to be activated only when a loader with an attached RFID reader is loading a truck. On the other hand, control sensor is connected to the truck control system and operated by the motion of its movable bed. The function of control sensors is to record the signal time when the truck operator gives order to the truck control system to raise or lower truck bed. The captured data is then transferred wirelessly from the RFID reader and control sensor to a computer housed in one of the temporary offices onsite and subsequently to the main server in the contractor?s head office. Fusing the data captured from RFID reader and control sensor is used to identify loading, travel, dumping and return time that constitute the hauling truck cycle time. The collected data is analyzed and processed automatically, without human intervention, to calculate the productivity of the hauling truck and to report it directly to onsite personnel. Relational database is developed to support the implementation of the proposed method. The developed database is used to process the data captured by the RFID and the control sensor to calculate the productivity achieved in cutfill operations in near-real-time. The developed methodology is expected to facilitate early detection of discrepancies between actual and planned performances.

DURING the closing month of 1929, Walter Douglas found his health impaired by the strain of many difficult years of alternating prosperity and depression, and in April 1930 resigned the presidency of Phelps Dodge. Douglas was succeeded by Louis S. Cates. The choice broke a tradition that had been held inviolate for almost a hundred years. For the first time in its long history, the direction of the company's policies and operations was entrusted to a stranger without previous Phelps Dodge background, training, experience, or tradition. But the choice was wisely made. For a time at least, the path of Phelps Dodge was to run through rough and dubious ground, and no man in the United States was better qualified to blaze that trail than Louis Cates. After graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cates had served a rough and financially un- profitable apprenticeship at one of the century-old mining camps of Chihuahua, Mexico. Batch flotation tests were carried out using samples from stockpiles that were up to 1.5 months old as well as fresh samples oxidized in the lab for up to six months. Head grades and size distributions of samples were equalized whenever possible. The samples from stockpiles and oxidation experiments produced inferior nickel grade-recovery compared to the fresh sample. The poorer grade-recovery performance was attributable to two factors. First, a significant dilution effect was observed due to complete flotation of pyrrhotite. Secondly, the same stockpiling conditions caused nickel losses that were attributable to non-floatability of some pentlandite. Application of a high pH of 10 compared to the regular pH of 9.2 slowed down pyrrhotite flotation kinetics, but was not able to prevent complete flotation after 8 minutes. The samples oxidized in the lab did not match full characteristics of stockpile samples. They provided somewhat better selectivity for pentlandite. Some correlations were observed on a qualitative basis between surface characteristics such as elemental sulphur formation, activation and flotation behaviour. Oxidation conditions, which induce floatability on pyrrhotite while causing incremental loss in pentlandite floatability appear to be the root cause of difficulties in the processing of oxidized forms of these ores.

"The efficiency of the truck-shovel haulage system is significantly influenced by the truck fleet size. A discrete event simulation model with 3D animation has been developed to estimate the productivity of a truck-shovel network system, shovel efficiency, truck cycle time, truck utilisation and the optimal fleet size. The simulation model considers the dynamic variability of traffic conditions and also the truck as an individual entity. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Ground Control Engineering Branch is investigating the use of shotcrete in weak rock mass mines with the objective of reducing fatalities and injuries resulting from rock fall accidents. When shotcrete is used as part of a multi-element ground support system there is a need to know when the material has developed a threshold early compressive strength of approximately 1 MPa (145 psi) for safe re-entry of miner and machine into shotcreted mine workings. This equates to the material having developed enough strength to be self-supporting and allow for emplacement of the remaining support elements that require drilling of the shotcrete layer without degradation. NIOSH researchers have developed methods and portable test equipment to measure shotcrete strength on-site in the first six hours after application using the ASTM C 116-90 (1990) standard. These advances were demonstrated in tests on five commercially available shotcrete mixes, sprayed as dry shotcrete using the field expedient methods and equipment. The strength values from these tests allowed for real-time identification of the early strength threshold and were consistent with strengths reported using laboratory-type equipment. The findings of this NIOSH research for determining shotcrete early strength can improve mine safety by providing a method for determining initial site specific material property values to be used for design and as a means to conduct on-site quality control and monitoring during production.

"Mining used to be a business primarily focused on the technical aspects of getting valuable ore out of the ground and extracting the minerals efficiently. Without denying the importance of these skills, a narrow focus on technical issues is no longer enough to guarantee success when it comes to exploiting rare earth element (REE) deposits. Molycorp failed to enter the global REE market in a successful manner, while none of the many REE exploration projects has turned into an active mine so far and none is expected to commence operations in the near future. Accordingly, the world of REE is far more complex compared to other commodities. This paper looks into the REE industry to identify the factors that can connect potential U.S. REE mines to the market. The ability to break free from past thinking and become future-focused is a key driver. Mining of REE is pointless without a corresponding value-adding chain, while developing a value chain without first establishing an uninterruptible source of REE is also senseless. The mining sector must be based on the REE value chain and vice versa, along with the establishment of a market channel for the REE products that come out of the mine. INTRODUCTION It has been seven years since rare earth elements became the subjects of front-page headlines. It was when the controversial Chinese export policy for these critical commodities was epitomised in a maritime border dispute with Japan in September 2010 that resulted in the big REE crisis and price spike of 2011 (Barakos et al, 2016c; Mancheri, 2015). The world was dismayed, especially in REE-importing countries, such as the United States that was and is still totally dependent on Chinese production and exports (Barakos et al, 2016c; Kennedy, 2015). The short-lived alarm initiated a treasure hunt by way of exploration for REE deposits all over the world. The continuously growing demand on the one hand and the Chinese sovereignty of the REE-market on the other, led the rest of the world to explore their own REE resources. In just a few years, more than 400 projects were initiated to explore REE deposits outside of China (ERECON, 2015; Goodenough, 2016). The prices of REE, however, dropped rapidly and at the moment of writing this paper are in 6-year lows, at the level of the price average before the 2011 crisis (Barakos, 2017). The viability of even major established producers is being challenged, not to mention the development prospects of potential REE-market entrants (Barakos et al, 2016b; Rollat et al, 2016). Production cutbacks and industry consolidation in China impel REE market experts to forecast that prices have already reached their lowest point and have nowhere to go but up (Adamas, 2015; Roskill 2015). Yet, expectations for increased REE prices are limited and drastic changes are unlikely to happen in the near future, as there is still excess supply in the overall REE market (Barakos, 2017). Nevertheless, the low prices of rare earths are not the only reason that potential producers are struggling to enter the global REE market. Among other parameters, the separation of the individual elements seems to be the most important factor, as it is technically challenging and expensive to build and to operate."

Diesel fuel is being used in greater volume than ever before in the United States. During 1950 railroads used 43 percent of the total volume of Diesel fuel sold, smelters, mines, and manufacturing plants used about 13 percent, highway vehicles such as trucks and busses, and equipment such as tractors and bulldozers accounted for approximately 20 percent, about 12 percent was used by water craft, and the remaining 12 percent by gas and electric utilities, the military forces, and oil companies. These figures were calculated from data issued by the Bureau of Mines. 2/ Comparable figures for 1951 and for 1952 to date are not available, but recent information indicates that well over 11,000,000 barrels of Diesel fuel per month are produced by the country's refineries. 3/ More information on this increasingly important type of engine fuel is needed by the petroleum industry, engine manufacturers, and consumers, particularly on the grades and qualities of the Diesel fuels being marketed. To supply this information the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, under cooperative agreement, are conducting annual surveys of Diesel fuel oil produced in refineries in this country.

"Premature failure of rock bolts has been recorded at twelve underground coalmines over the past 15 years in Australia. Over the last four years, UNSW Australia has been conducting an Australian Research Council (ARC) and Industry funded linkage research project into premature failure of rock bolts. The extent of the problem was investigated by underground surveys of mines with known prematurely failed bolts using visual mapping, non-destructive load and ultrasound testing. A major component of this project was to define the environmental factors responsible for corrosion of rock bolts. The environment to which a rock bolt is exposed will include groundwater chemistry, the mineralogy of the strata, atmosphere within the drill hole and even microbial activity. This paper focuses on the groundwater survey and analysis findings to date along with in-hole bolt corrosion coupons installed into field sites. Corrosivity classification systems exist for general corrosion but do not apply to the rock bolt stress corrosion cracking (SCC) problem found in Australian underground coal. The method of in situ investigations is leading towards the building of a corrosivity classification model to assist mines in prediction of premature rock bolt failure. The Tek Process can produce masonry products such as bricks, roof or wall tiles, and block from virtually any inorganic waste. In the process the aggregate raw materials, portland cement, water and common chemicals are first mixed together; then mechanically subjected to several thousand pound pressure per square inch. This causes a novel chemical reaction between the cement, chemicals and water; producing the "patented" Tek adhesive binder which holds the aggregate together in a stone-like mix. Simultaneously, the desired product shape is formed. The building modules can have strengths of 8000 p.s.i. (pounds per square inch) with completely sound aggregates utilizing air curing for a period of 28 days. With most aggregates, 3000 p.s.i. is achieved within 24 hours. Eventual strengths usually exceed 5000 p.s.i. with almost any raw material. Water absorption ranges from 5-7.5 percent. Both absorption and strength figures are superior to the most rigid of any and all A.S.T.M. specifications for the highest quality bricks. In most locations, the product (when brick shaped is called Tekbrik) can be produced significantly more economically than can comparable grades of clay or other bricks, be- cause almost any inorganic waste materials or pollutant can be used as a raw material. The process results in a lower manufacturing cost as compared to clay bricks; fuel cost to operate a clay kiln represents a substantial portion of the total cost. Capital expenditure for a Tek plant also is lower due to the large investment in clay kilns. Transportation savings also are important, clay brick factories must be very large because the kilns are uneconomical unless they are large. Most bricks are manufactured at the sites of clay deposits in relatively uninhabited areas. The cost of transportation to the job site represents a considerable percentage of the selling price.

The depletion of bauxite reserves around the world has necessitated the search for viable alternative sources of aluminum. The major non-bauxite source of aluminum is alunite [KAl3 (SO4)2(OH)6]. Lixiviation is the common industrial process to recover aluminum from alunite. Due to the presence of quartz (40%) as the main gangue mineral, this process causes the formation of Sodium aluminosilicate and Potassium aluminosilicate complexes that leads to loss of alunite, and chemical reagents. Thus, pre-concentration of alunite is required to remove the gangue minerals. Because of the low degrees of freedom (DOF) of alunite, froth flotation, as a preconcentration method, is a viable alternative to increase selectivity in downstream processes. In this work, the possibility of Alunite preconcentration with micro flotation and mechanical flotation cells was studied. The influence of type and dosage of collector, pH, solid percent, particles sizes were considered on the flotation. Flotation tests were designed based on Taguchi method, followed by performing based on surface charge differential between alunite and quartz on direct and revers flotation. In the reverse flotation, Ca+ 2 and Ba+ 2 were used to activate the quartz surface. Under optimum conditions of reverse flotation, alunite grade and recovery were 40% and 62.1% respectively. In the direct flotation, the surface of alunite was activated by F- . The grade and recovery were 50 and 89%, respectively.

The optimal selection of machine or machine group for building processes is very important role of building planner during the process of building planning. During this process building planner have to analyze several factors influencing the final effective decision concerning this problem. There are several factors and criteria for effective selection of building machines. In our contribution there are analyzed: ability of machines to realize designed building process (quality aspect), duration of mechanized process (time aspect) and minimizing of energy consumption (cost and environmental aspect). Selected scientific methods and theories of problem solution can be divided into these groups: theory of system (creation of building machine selection method), multi-criteria optimizing method (analysis of mechanized building process from the point of more optimal criteria), queuing theory (application during the mathematical modeling of mechanized soil processes), method of scientific analysis (analysis of factors influencing final decisions), method of scientific synthesis (creation of optimizing method implemented into building processes and possible application in construction sector). Multi-criteria optimizing method were during our research work implemented into soil processes and selected building group machines (excavators and trucks), which are very often used in construction and mining processes. This method can be considered as a multi-level decision making process based on multiple parameters. In our contribution is presented key mathematical models for model example solution and software built in Java, which has been created as a support for method described in this contribution. Application of this method and software will increase the effectiveness of building machine selection from the point of key criteria of optimizing: quality, time and energy consumption.

When Lewis and Clark first pushed their boats up the Missouri River, Meriwether Lewis reported the presence of coal in the western states by saying in 1802 that it "burnt tolerably well and afforded but little flame or smoke but produced a hot and lasting fire". Lewis would have been amazed and bewildered at the history of coal development in this region and the more recent political-socio-economic-environmental confrontations of today. Certainly without this coal the railroads would not have readily pushed into our western states, and the progress of this region would have suffered. The coal industry has passed from a period when "coal was king" to a period of depression in the industry, but its importance is being revived. A contributing and simultaneous environmental concern has emerged in the nation and in many states during the past ten years, partly caused by newly imposed standards for sulfur content of fuels. Much of the midwest and eastern coal cannot be used because of high sulfur content, shifting attention to the low sulfur coal deposits of the western states. In the western states, lands disturbed by strip mining or even underlain by strippable coal are small compared to the total acreage, and usually mining operations are on lands not under cultivation. There are some farm lands being disturbed by surface mining, but this is often over-emphasized. In states like New Mexico and Arizona the percentage is less. The value of the minerals underlying the surface certainly must be considered along with the value of the surface, and sometimes proper reclamation following mining can result in higher ultimate usage of the land.

The Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is practicable in a reactor where the exothermic heat of reaction is removed by circulating large quantities of recycle gas through a catalyst bed of high-voids content. At an hourly space velocity of 1100, the feed gas, a mixture of 1.5 parts hydrogen to 1 of carbon monoxide, was converted 90 percent, producing hydrocarbons predominantly in the gasoline range. At these conditions a recycle-to-fresh gas ratio of 40:1 was enough to give excellent temperature control with a pressure drop of 1.5 p.s.i. per foot of bed using a steel catalyst in the form of lathe turnings. Steel parallel plates, although offering lower resistance to gasflow, were less reactive and less durable. INTRODUCTION The Federal Bureau of Mines has been engaged in a research and development program since 1944 on the synthesis of gasoline from coal. Gasification of coal with steam and oxygen to yield a synthesis gas--a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen--is being investigated at Morgantown, W. Va.; and the synthesis of gasoline by catalytically reacting the carbon monoxide and hydrogen over iron by the Fischer-Tropsch reaction is being investigated at Bruceton, Pa.

"This paper argues that, although specialist mineral engineering expertise is essential for the efficient design and operation of mineral processing plants, the environment in which these skills are supplied to the industry has changed forever, and not for the better. Most of the mineral engineering programmes in western universities have died or are dying. The long-service mine site mentors have gone, operations are run on a staffing shoestring so that there is no longer the time (or inclination) for considered decision-making, and the FIFO model has discouraged continuity of optimisation projects and communication between professionals. At the same time the technical challenges of designing and operating effective process plants are increasing. These trends are not going to be reversed any time soon, if ever. The ability to run efficient mineral processing operations has been materially compromised as a consequence. We propose that well-designed professional development can help to recover this situation, and it can be done easily and cheaply. The workplace is the best environment for such skills development. Professional development training should be integrated with normal duties throughout the early years of a graduate’s service (and probably beyond), and the cost should be regarded as non-discretionary expenditure for the business. If such programmes are properly resourced and managed and extended over longer time periods, there will be a measureable rise in the level of technical understanding and competence within companies and a resulting beneficial impact on resource utilisation and thus shareholder value. The paper outlines some of the approaches that we believe will work, and the benefits that we expect will accrue."

Given that piles are composed of different materials and installed using a variety of methods, ASTM D 1143/D 1143M-07 Standard Test Methods for Deep Foundations Under Static Axial Compression is justifiably general so that it has as many applications as reasonably possible. There are aspects of the test setup, the test procedures, and data interpretation for instrumented piles (some of which are specific to augered cast-in-place piles) that are either not discussed in detail in this ASTM standard or are not addressed at all. Specifically, the use of variable time hold times can obscure the shape of the conventional load-deflection curve, as well as, influence the interpretation of the ultimate pile capacity. Unload-reload cycles induce additional non-uniform internal axial loads within the pile which complicate interpretation of the strain gage data and increase the potential for errors. Attempts to maintain a constant top load during the hold period can lead to operational difficulties in taking measurements and are technically unnecessary. Residual load has been shown to develop in cast-in-place piles and can significantly influence the axial load distribution as interpreted from strain gage data. The stiffness of cast-in-place piles has been observed to vary with the measured strain, and a constant modulus, as provided by correlation with the unconfined compressive strength of the grout, may lead to a significantly different interpretation of the axial load distribution.

For the Danish landworks for the coming fixed link between Denmark and Sweden across the Øresund the focus has been on the environmental aspects of the construction and operation of the facilities. This paper describes how the environmental objectives pertaining to the project have influenced the design and construction of one of the major elements of the Danish landworks, i.e. the tunnel in Sydhavnsgade and under Sydhavn Station. The chosen construction methods for the construction pit bracing and the groundwater lowering will be described along with the observed effects on the environment as shown by simulated or measured values for noise impact, settlements, pumped groundwater and extension of the drawdown cone.
