Potholes on the Merensky and UG2 reefs in the Bushveld Complex occur as near-circular to elliptical depressions or slumps on the reef horizon, normally presenting as severe disruptions which prevent economic extraction. Within the pothole, the reef and other strata may either be attenuated, absent, or highly deformed, this being the result of the overlying hangingwall strata having slumped down. The hypotheses for pothole formation involve several mechanisms, including downward erosion, upward fluid movement, or synmagmatic deformation. When potholes are exposed in mine workings, significant fracturing is often observed. This fracturing is particularly evident in anorthosite rock types. Stress measurements were conducted in a pothole on the Merensky Reef to determine if the fracturing was due to high stress conditions. The paper describes the measurement results and numerical modelling that was done to determine the influence of depth and mining on the stress condition at the site. The results show that high stresses do exist in at least some potholes, and that current formation theories do not adequately explain the measured stresses. In support of understanding the high local stress associated with the pothole, the study explored several rock engineering modelling processes to validate the conditions of the study site and enclosing excavations. A better understanding of the stress conditions in potholes with additional data could lead to more appropriate support design and avoidance of potential rockbursts in these structures.

All aspects of precious metals processing were featured at a symposium held Oct. 3-6, 2007, at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, AZ. Although billed as "Precious Metals Processing: Advances in Primary and Secondary Operations," the symposium also looked at economic, regulatory and environmental issues affecting the precious metals industry. The symposium was sponsored by SME; The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS); and the International Precious Metals Institute (IPMI). It included workshops, technical presentations, guest speakers and social activities. Mining industry management, process engineers, equipment manufacturers, consultants, metals marketers, academics and others involved in the precious metals industry attended the conference. Needless to say, with gold nearing $25.721g ($800/oz) and platinum pushing $41.801g ($1,300/oz) at the time of the meeting, the mood among the attendees could not have been more positive. The symposium was privileged to have Father Ernest S. Sweeney, professor of Latin American History at Loyola Marymount University, as a guest speaker. Sweeney, a Jesuit priest, provided a colorful account of the history of mining in Arizona and the surrounding region of North America (Fig. 1). He described the importance of the mining industry and said, "To go down into the bowels of the earth to extract its riches for the benefit of all of us is an awesome task deserving our sincere respect and gratitude." However, he warned the industry that: "The ever increasing de¬mands on the mining community for the protection of the environment calls for endless efforts to maintain ethical standards in a business filled with risk, uncertainty and frustrations." Sweeney noted that the Spanish conquest of the Americas was driven by the three fundamental motives of "God, glory and gold." He noted that gold was the basic, most powerful driving force of the conquest and occupation of the Spanish empire. The first European to explore Arizona was the Franciscan missionary Marcos de Niza. He came to Arizona in 1539 in search of the fabled Seven Golden Cities of Cíbola. Sweeny noted that Spanish explorers were consumed, as Cortes himself described it, "with a burning fever that only gold could cure." Sweeney told the story of some of these early explorers, including Francisco Vázquez de Coronado who "mounted an expedition in pursuit of gold and rich empires to conquer." Coronado passed through Arizona and discovered the Grand Canyon. "Coronado returned to Mexico exhausted, bankrupt and disillusioned, but with a wealth of new knowledge of the borderlands of the Spanish empire," said Sweeney. He then described the colorful history of early gold, silver and copper exploration and mining in Arizona, including the famous tale of the Lost Dutchman's Mine. Recent events demonstrate that civil and government facilities and structures face an ever-increasing need to be designed for protection against malevolent explosions. Modification of existing public structures and especially design of new ones increasingly includes provisions for explosive protection. ISEE members endorse and promote responsible application of explosives to benefit mankind and deplore any other use. However, our knowledge of explosive behavior and our ability to predict the results of explosive events puts us in a unique position to give guidance to designers of civil and public structures. Recent advances in computational methods have resulted in new computer codes with ALE (arbitrary lagrangian eulerian) simulation capabilities. Historically, lagrangian computational methods have been used for modeling solids because the mesh or discretization moves with the material. Rock breakage resulting from explosively induced shock-waves has been successfully modeled with lagrangian codes. Explosive detonation has traditionally been modeled with eulerian techniques. Eulerian methods have been used to model gases and fluids, tracking the material as it moves through the computational grid. ALE computational technology couples the two methods together in a manner never before possible. An ALE simulation can accurately treat the explosive detonation, interaction of explosive gases with air, and the impact of explosive event on nearby solid structures. ALEGRA (Budge et al. 1997 a & b) is an ALE code developed at Sandia National Laboratories. ALEGRA simulations accurately predict the explosively induced impulse on the structure to be protected. It has been applied to the analysis and design of blastwalls to protect structures and people from explosive events. The impulse calculated can be used by structural engineers to design a blastwall. ALEGRA has also been applied to predict the effect of a blastwall on explosion overpressure some distance behind the blastwall to assess the effect on people present during the event.

Slurry pipelines are used in a number of countries to convey processed ore mixed with water over long distances from remote mine sites to ports or plants for further processing. In Egypt and Sudan, numerous mineral resources are scattered in remote areas. Through the years, Egyptian geologists have identified 268 sites for metallic ores and 386 sites for industrial nonmetallic minerals. A large portion of these sites are in the Eastern Desert in an area called the Nubian Shield. Similar sites are found in the Sudan where mining contributes to less than 1 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP). There are three important components of infrastructure needed to develop these resources ? power, water and transportation. While Egypt is able to satisfy 70 percent of its needs in iron ore from the Gadideh Mine in the Western Desert, it needs to expand its other resources to reduce imports heavily sedimented. Dredging of these sediments and transporting them by slurry pipelines would enhance an industry of bricks or agricultural development based on tailings technology often used in mining. This article explores the potential for slurry technology for opening new mines in the desert or recuperating the sediments of the Nile. The technology by itself would be new to both countries and would benefit from collaboration, particularly to de-silt the Nasser-Nubia Lake.

This report describes the linkage of all mining sectors with all other manufacturing, services, and final demand sectors of the U.S. economy. Besides being a basic data source, it provides a framework for aggregate economic impact analysis with respect to the mining industries. The framework is an open-static input-output model specifying 48 mining industries as classified in the Standard Industrial Classification Manual for all mining activities and 76 nonmining industries which collectively exhaust, all economic activities. The 124-sector model used in this report is an expansion of the preliminary 82-industry aggregation estimates made by the Department of Commerce. In the expanded model, 48 ruining industries are substituted for the original 6. The methodology used to ascertain the industry-by-industry procurement cost estimates and product ion flows necessary to the construction and expansion of the basic 82-sector model included personal interviews, case studies of specific mining activity analysis, and published and unpublished data from the Bureau of Mines and the Census of Mineral Industries, The end products of this study are two tables arranged to show the direct purchases necessary for each industry to support the level of economic activity and the total purchases generated in each industry throughout the economy by each $1 of aggregate economic demand in 1958. The tables may he used for economic impact studies and market analysis by firms engaged in or closely associated with the mining industries. Some illustrations of their usages are presented.

Detailed descriptions by operating area of the Kidd copper smelter are presented, together with accounts of complement staffing, training, and preparation activities for smelter start-up in June 1981. Concentrate tonnages smelted in the first twelve months of operation were constrained by the capacity of the furnace off-gas system. However, modifications designed and introduced over that period, plus sustained efforts by operations and maintenance personnel have resulted in stepwise improvements in smelter performance.. Consistent operation at design feed rates has been well demonstrated over the third and fourth smelter campaigns and efforts continue on further improving the continuous smelter on-line times and increasing campaign life. In November 1982., following a seventeen month preproduction period, the Kidd smelter attained full operating status.

"Based on contact-angle measurements and the work of adhesion equation, the hydrophobicity of a wide variety of coals was found to decrease with decreasing rank, fixed carbon and total carbon content and with increasing oxygen and hydroxyl content. The estimated hydrophobicity, based on the water-sessile-drop contact angle, is '\.. 20% for lignite, increases with increasing rank up to a maximum of 'V70% for low (LV) and medium (MV) volatile bituminous coals and then decreases somewhat for anthracite. Using the captive-bubble technique, the calculated hydrophobicity ranges from '\.. 0% (below HV A bituminous rank) to a maximum of 55% for L V-MV coal. The former estimation is believed to be the more accurate. While the water-sessile-drop contact angle as measured on a polished-coal surface is usually larger than that shown by the captive-bubble method, the two values were found to converge at""' 95% relative humidity. It is proposed that the surface of coal consists of three kinds of sites: strongly hydrophobic, weakly hydrophobic and hydrophilic. The sessile-drop technique measures the total hydrophobic sites whereas the captive-bubble method measures only the more strongly hydrophobic sites. A water film covers the weakly hydrophobic sites preventing their detection by the captive-bubble technique.INTRODUCTIONCoal is a mixture of the degradation products of plants and of mineral matter. The appearance and properties of a specific coal is determined by the nature of the original vegetation and the extent of the physical and chemical changes which have occurred after deposition. The coalification process may be considered to have started with peat formation followed by a transition to lignite due to burial under sediments and metamorphic processes. Further metamorphic transformation to bituminous coals and, finally, under intense metamorphic action, to anthracite causes the carbon content and rank of the coal to increase. With such a wide variation in their genesis and composition, equally wide variations in the degree of hydrophobicity of different coals may be expected. It is the purpose of this paper to provide a means of estimating the hydrophobicity of a given coal sample based on rank parameters."

"In 1997 when Royal Oak Mines Inc. went into receivership, the mineral processing technicians (mill operators) who had been working at Giant Mine in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories for most of their career walked out with no credentials to serve as testimony of their knowledge and skills.As a result of new diamond mining activity and the establishment of socio-economic agreements, mining industry representatives approached the Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE), Government of the Northwest Territories, in 1999. They requested support and direction to promote training and recognition for mineral processing technicians at BHP’s (BHP Diamonds Inc.) Ekati mine. ECE recommended the development of occupational standards and certification.This paper describes the development process and end products that resulted from this collaborative project between industry, government and education. In addition, industry representatives involved in the project share their views on the development process and the benefits of standards and certification.The conclusion invites industry members to support national occupational standards and certification with their associated benefits: standardized training in the workplace and institutions, proof of competence for hiring, recognition of prior learning, and a nationally and internationally recognized credential.INTRODUCTIONSwiftly changing labour market demands are nothing new in the North. The fur trade and mineral discoveries have brought employment to workers in a feast and famine cycle for decades. In the late 1990s, the Giant, Con, Lupin, Polaris and Nanasivik mines were nearing the end of productive runs. Exploration for seafloor massive sulfides is currently mainly focused on investigation for active hydrothermal vent fields. However, most of the resource potential is thought to be related to inactive, large deposits that had enough time to accumulate sufficient tonnage. At the same time, ageing of these deposits will ultimately result also in burial acted by either sediments and/or volcanic deposits. We currently lack the technologies to explore for these deposits in a time- and cost-efficient manner. In the fall of 2012 we used a number of AUV-based technologies to explore and image a sulfide occurrence at the Palinuro Volcanic Complex in the Tyrrhenian Sea (Mediterranean Sea; Fig. 1) where sampling and drilling have documented a buried polymetallic barite-pyrite dominated site (Petersen et al., 2014). Sulfide mineralization is here covered by volcaniclastic and pelagic sediments and only red sediment staining and the presence of few tubeworm bushes indicated recent hydrothermal activity - black smoker venting is absent. We used AUVbased high-resolution bathymetry, sidescan sonar imaging, subbottom profiling, as well as magnetics to describe, in a quantitative way, the previously known sulfide-bearing areas as well as to successfully explore for new hydrothermal sites including large chimney structures (Figs. 2). Additionally chemical sensors (CTD, Eh, turbidity) investigated the water column for signs of hydrothermal activity in areas not previously investigated, but at the end, only weak anomalies were found in the southern part of the summit.

These investigations were conducted to determine conditions for recovery of nickel and copper from Funter Bay, Alaska, sulfide ore and recovery of nickel from nickel-silicate ore, Nickel Mountain, Riddle, Oreg. Samples of Funter Bay cupriferous and nickeliferous pyrrhotite ore, were treated by beneficiation, roasting, electric smelting of roasted are for matte production, chlorination, leaching, and sulfatizing roasting with subsequent leaching. Funter Bay and Nickel Mountain ores were smelted together to produce matte. Total sulfide flotation, followed by magnetic separation of the tailings to recover entrained nickel-bearing pyrrhotite, resulted in the highest nickel recovery in beneficiation tests on Funter Bay are. Overall beneficiation resulted in recovery of 98.5 percent of the copper and 95.4 percent of the nickel in the concentrate that contained 3.5 percent copper and 1.7 percent nickel.

The structural evaluation of seismic performance of an existing hospital in Long Beach, California, required spring constants of foundation elements. The structure included support by deep foundation elements comprised of belled (underreamed) caissons. The available relationships in the governing building code (ASCE41-13) to compute axial stiffness is not applicable due to the belled configuration of the caissons. The large diameter of the bells required consideration of the foundation medium to the axial stiffness; a detail not clearly described in ASCE 41-13. Furthermore, prescriptive equations in ASCE 41- 13 used to estimate lateral stiffness only consider pile groups with the assumption that the only source of lateral stiffness is the axial reaction of individual piles. These assumptions were invalid for the project at hand where all caissons are configured as single foundation elements, not a pile group. In the present work, the approach taken to estimate seismic stiffness of single-belled caissons is described which accounts for the elastic behavior of the foundation medium below the bell base and lateral behavior of single-pile shafts. Results of the work provide a more satisfactory derivation of the spring constants consistent with current modeling methods. INTRODUCTION Seismic evaluation of an existing hospital in Long Beach, California, required geotechnical investigation followed by site-specific ground motion analysis. This evaluation was required by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) in order to meet the requirements of the Structural Performance Category 4D (SPC-4D) published as a part of the 2016 California Building Code, CBC (Section 3412A). SPC-4D utilizes ASCE41-13, as modified by OSHPD, and involves two seismic performance objectives: BSE-1E (20% probability of exceedance in 50 years) and BSE-2E (5% probability of exceedance in 50 years). Spring constants and capacities of foundation elements were needed for evaluation of the structural performance of the building subjected to these two performance objectives. Our review of the as-built foundation plans indicated that both shallow footings and caissons were used for support of the structure. The plans demonstrated that all caissons are belled (under-reamed) and are individual, i.e. not part of pile groups. In this paper, the subject site condition and foundation elements are described first. This is followed by details of assessing spring constants and vertical capacities for belled caissons. The new requirements of the 2016 CBC concerning the evaluation of critical facilities will likely entail evaluation of other structures with belled caissons due to the more extensive use of these foundations in the past. This paper proposes a method to address the conditions of individual belled caissons not explicitly considered in the current code provisions.

A fire location computational model was developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The model can determine all the possible paths in a mine that smoke can travel from a fixed fire source to a smoke detector. The associated FORTRAN computer program can be utilized to determine the minimum travel time from a source fire to a smoke detector. The difference in travel time from an isolated fire source to two or more detectors can be used to isolate those airways in which the source fire is located.

THE Flin Flon concentrating and metallurgical plants (Figure 1) of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited, lie adjacent to the town of Flin Flon, on the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border, 400 miles northwest of Winnipeg. Since the start of milling operations in 1930, over 50 million tons of ore from the Flin Flon mine have been treated in the concentrator. During the past few years, newly discovered orebodies have been brought into production and their ores processed at the company's main metallurgical plants. All these properties are within a 75-mile radius of Flin Flon and have aided substantially in augmenting plant metal production as well as retarding depletion of ore reserves in the Flin Flon mine. •Current satellite producers are the Schist Lake, Coronation, and Chisel Lake mines. The Schist Lake mine, located 3 ½ miles southeast of the main plant, is a copper-zinc producer. It was brought into production in 1954. The

The ~2500 km long Kermadec-Tonga arc northeast ofNew Zealand is the longest continuous intraoceanic arc in the world. At least 94 volcanic centres along the arc are submarine, most (87 per cent) within the Kermadec arc (de Ronde et al, 2003a). Volcanic rocks range from basalt to rhyodacite with trace element and isotopic data indicating significant magma source heterogeneity both along and across the arc. &nbsp; The entire ~1300 km of the Kermadec arc has now been surveyed for hydrothermal emissions (de Ronde et al, 2004). First-stage surveys utilised surface vessels. In February 1996, the first sulfide samples from the southern Kermadec arc were dredged from the Brothers and Rumble II West caldera volcanoes (R/V Tangaroa cruise TAN96/03; Wright et al, 1998; de Ronde et al, 2003b). In September 1998, low-temperature, diffuse venting was discovered at Monowai, Rumble III and Clark volcanoes, and high-temperature, black smoker venting was found within Brothers caldera (R/V Sonne cruise SO-135; Stoffers et al, 1999). The NZAPLUME cruise of March 1999 surveyed 13 volcanic centres (each mainly comprised of single, large volcanoes) of the southern Kermadec arc and documented hydrothermal emissions above seven of them (de Ronde et al, 2001; Baker et al, 2003; Massoth et al, 2003). In July 2001, additional mineralised and hydrothermally altered samples were dredged from Brothers volcano (R/V Tangaroa cruise TAN01/07). The NZAPLUME II cruise of May 2002 confirmed venting was still occurring at all the known hydrothermal sites, and that ten active vent sites occurred along the mid-part of the arc, between Brothers and Raoul Island (de Ronde et al, 2002). In September-October 2004, NZAPLUME III surveyed the northern-most part of the Kermadec arc where another nine volcanic centres are hydrothermally active. &nbsp; Second-stage exploration of the Kermadec arc hydrothermal systems utilised deep submergence vehicles. In October-November 2004, the Japanese submersible Shinkai 6500 made four dives on Brothers. Samples recovered include vent fluids, chimneys, altered rocks and various animals and microbes. In April-May 2005, a more extensive expedition using the American submersible Pisces V made 23 dives on nine different volcanic centres, eight of them for the first time. &nbsp; Extensive plume surveys show Brothers volcano is host to the most hydrothermally active sites of all those known along the Kermadec arc. In total, nine dives have been made on Brothers, six on the NW caldera site and three on the cone site. The NW caldera vent site is a long-term hydrothermal system that is today dominated by evolved seawater but has had episodic injections of magmatic fluid. The cone site is a nascent magmatic-hydrothermal system where crack zones localise upwelling acidic waters (de Ronde et al, 2005). A SE caldera site represents the main upflow of a relatively well-established magmatic-hydrothermal system on the seafloor where sulfide-rich chimneys are extant. Each of these different vent sites represent diverse parts of an evolving hydrothermal system, any one of which may be typical of submarine volcanic arcs.

This report presents the results of a cooperative study between BethEnergy Mines Inc., Ebensburg, PA, a central Pennsylvania coal mining company, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines to investigate longwall development entry roof instability. In-mine mapping of geologic and deformational features was conducted to reveal the major ground control problems encountered during gate road development. In addition, mining-induced pillar load monitoring was used to indicate development loading on variously dimensioned gate road pillars and to determine if pillar yielding occurred. Finally, visual observations of a variety of roof control methods were used to determine the most effective support elements for controlling cutter roof failure.

The new building of the Central Bank of Iraq in Baghdad was footed in difficult underground conditions on more than 600 reinforced concrete driven piles, with cross-sectional diameters of 45 x 45 cm and pile lengths of 12.0 to 18.0 m. The necessary embedded depth and the bearing capacity thus reached were established on all 600 drives piles by means of dynamic pile tests. For the calibration of the dynamic pile tests, 6 static pile load tests were carried out. The execution of the construction and the results of the extensive tests on the building site are shown.

The devastating failure of Dam I at the Corrego do Feijao iron ore mine near Brumadinho in Brazil on 25th January 2019 left at least 270 people dead or missing. In the immediate aftermath of this event, many mining companies commenced reviews of their tailings and water storage facilities (T&WSFs), and Rio Tinto was no exception. Rio Tinto has an interest in over 250 T&WSFs across 47 sites in 13 countries as owner-operator, as managing JV partner, and through non-managed partnerships and other ownership arrangements; T&WSF experts from Rio Tinto’s Surface Mining Centre of Excellence visited the sites in order to complete Technical Risk Reviews of each facility. These reviews looked beyond the day-to-day operational aspects of T&WSF management, and the site’s compliance with local regulations and Rio Tinto’s internal D5 Standard – Management of tailings and water storage facilities, in order to provide a strategic, second line of assurance perspective. The reviews focused on design and construction; operational controls; risk control framework; and competencies and capabilities of personnel involved in the design, operation and closure of the facilities. Additional activities were carried out in parallel with these reviews, including the development of a consistent approach to dam break studies; the public disclosure of information on Rio Tinto’s tailings storage facilities and their management; and contribution to external programs such as the initiatives being co-ordinated by the International Committee on Mining and Metals. This paper provides an overview of the tailings and water storage assurance work undertaken by Rio Tinto’s Surface Mining Centre of Excellence Tailings Validation Taskforce to date; work that will continue to improve governance and assurance for all of Rio Tinto’s T&WSF.

Experimental results are presented that test the hypothesis that the descaling behaviour of stainless steel slabs following reheating is controlled by interfacial roughening at the scale-steel interface. In this investigation, two stainless steels were considered: type 304 (austenitic, with 18% Cr and 8% Ni) and type 412 (ferritic/martensitic, with 11.6% Cr). It was found that the entanglement that arises at the scale-steel interface was in fact effective in maintaining scale-steel adhesion, under the mechanical descaling conditions used. In the case of type 304, descaling proceeded by fracture along chromite layers, which formed (by internal oxidation) on the austenite grain boundaries; for this steel, the extent of descaling depends most strongly on austenite grain structure, and not primarily on the conditions in the reheating furnace. In contrast, type 412 samples descaled only at the edge of the entangled zone, and showed a greater sensitivity to the reheating conditions; specifically, higher free oxygen in the reheating gas and longer reheating times were found to increase the residual scale thickness.
