Most existing impoundment ponds and dams leak effluent into the soil or rock upon which they are constructed. However, proposed environmental legislation will require very stringent control on the release of toxic effluents such as cyanide. More exacting investigation, design, and construction techniques than have been used in the past will be required to satisfy these new regulations. This paper discusses the types of field and laboratory investigations required to develop the data for the design of an impoundment system containing toxic effluent, and discusses in detail technical considerations necessary to design this system. Design topics include reservoir sealing with natural and man-made materials; embankment sealing; embankment design considering stability, surface hydrology, capacity, and downstream catchment basins; and special implications of cyanide effluents.

"The design of rock sockets for drilled shafts and piles proves to be a challenge for the Design Engineer. The magnitude of loads on the shaft and the behavior of the rock are critical in determining the required socket length. Several acceptable methods are available in the literature to analyze a rock socket under a combination of axial loads, lateral loads and moments. This paper will present a state-of-the-art methodology to analyze rock sockets utilizing deformation characteristics of the rock. This design methodology was implemented in the design of a major project in New York City.The project discussed herein is a marine transfer station planned for construction at East 91st Street along the East River in Manhattan. In order to support the piers and platform structures at a site with relatively shallow depth of the bedrock, rock sockets were required for the drilled shaft foundations. Rock sockets were utilized to provide the required fixity to the foundations and the structures. Acting at the top of the rock sockets are large shear forces and moments created by the lateral loads transferred from the structure.Upon review of the available techniques, a simplified method was proposed and used to analyze the rock sockets with a significant magnitude of lateral loading. The method recognizes two mechanisms through which the lateral shear and moment are transferred to the rock; a) load transfer through horizontal resistance of rock and b) the vertical shear resistance of the bond between socket and rock.The first load transfer mechanism was analyzed using the p-y curve method based on a rock model developed by Reese. The second was analyzed using a bond stiffness derived from the formula and curves utilized in the AASHTO Specifications for calculation of rock socket displacement. By comparing the two mechanisms, the main contribution to the large horizontal shear force that developed in the rock socket is identified.The paper will present a summary of the design methodology utilized in determining the length of the rock socket. It is believed that the presented method will provide substantial cost saving in selecting the most economical and efficient design length."

The Meikle Mine is located in the northeastern part of Nevada in the gold-rich Carlin Trend. First discovered in 1989, Meikle is being developed into a 2.2-kt/d (2,500-stpd) underground mine that will open during the second half of 1996. Work has already been completed on the mine’s cooling plant, a necessary item due to the high rock temperature and the hot ground water. In North American mines, there has been little need for refrigerated cooling. Therefore, Barrick needed to draw on experience from elsewhere in the world — particularly South Africa — to meet these requirements. The history of cooling mines using mechanical refrigeration dates back to the 1920s at Morro Velho in Brazil and 1936 at Ooregum in India (Dobson,1940 and Biccard, 1946). From 1940 to 1960, several cooling plants were installed on the deep level gold mines on the Witwatersrand in South Africa. These were followed by similar installations on the mines in the Klerksdorp, Welkom, Evander, Rustenburg and Thabazimbi areas. The first mine cooling plant in Germany was built during 1976.

Classification of rock and coal is one preliminary problem for fully automated or intelligent mining. It assists in automated rib stability analysis and enables the shearer to adjust the drums without human intervention. This paper studies the classification of rock from coal on rib images using machine learning techniques. A database of rock and coal images was created by filtering photographs taken by NIOSH researchers during site visits. Machine learning was conducted on patches, smaller images randomly extracted from each rock or coal image. After training, the classifier was validated with the testing dataset and achieved an accuracy score of 0.9.

"Pyritic massive sulphide deposits lie conformably above submarine volcanic rocks, and beneath siliceous and manganiferous iron formations. The massive bodies are often zoned, with a barren pyritic top grading downward into pyrite with sphalerite, and occasionally galena, and a chalcopyrite-rich base. They are frequently brecciated, like the lavas beneath them, which contain pyrite and chalcopyrite as coatings on joints and fractures and as dispersed grains. The lavas also exhibit propylitic, argillic and silicic alteration. These sulphide deposits appear to have formed on sea bottom from fluids escaping through the lavas during periods of exhalative and sometimes explosive volcanism. The process may be comparable to the present deposition of base metals from hot brines in the Red Sea. Some porphyry copper deposits resemble the altered, sulphide-impregnated lavas which lie beneath bodies of pyritic massive sulphide. In porphyry copper deposits, pyrite and chalcopyrite occur as veinlets and dispersed grains in intensely fractured tuffs, flows, sub-volcanic intrusions or other host rocks, characterized by propylitic, argillic and silicic alteration. Metal zoning is present; sphalerite and galena often occur in manganiferous veins peripheral to a shell of pyritic veinlets which encloses the mineable zone of chalcopyrite-bearing veinlets. This sulphide distribution appears to have formed from hydrothermal fluids escaping, either passively or violently, from solidifying magma. The fluids may be comparable to hot brines encountered by drilling in the Salton Sea area of California.There are also important differences between massive sulphide and porphyry copper deposits. The former usually occur in differentiated, mafic-to-felsic subaqueous volcanic rocks, whereas porphyry copper deposits are often associated with shallow plutons and subaerial volcanic rocks of intermediate to felsic composition. Calcic-sodic metasomatism accompanies the massive sulphides, whereas potassic metasomatism characterizes the porphyry cop.per deposits. Further, ages of massive sulphides range from Archean (Keewatin) to Tertiary, but porphyry coppers are Triassic to Tertiary in age. These similarities and differences suggest that massive sulphide and porphyry copper deposits are related tectonically and metallogenetically. The former were generated during early stages of crustal evolution, particularly in Archean time, and were repeatedly derived during early stages of younger, individual tectonic cycles. In contrast, the porphyry coppers developed during the later stages of crustal evolution - later in terms of both absolute age and relative age within younger individual tectonic cycles. They appear in younger rocks generally, and specifically in rocks involved in events of the middle and late tectonic stages of orogenic belts. The massive sulphide deposits are of early-magmatic eugeosynclinal affiliation, whereas the porphyry deposits formed in late-magmatic, predominantly subvolcanic settings at the edge of continental plates, where contemporaneous exhalative volcanism was mainly a subaerial phenomenon. Transitional types of deposits exist and are found on continental margins with flanking eugeosynclinal sequences."

Foram feitos corpos de prova com variações nas medidas laterais, de comprimento e profundidade do entalhe e ensaiados na temperatura ambiente para determinação das incertezas do tipo A e B. Com as incertezas determinadas pelos métodos estatísticos e não estatísticos, foram feitos ensaios, variando-se a temperatura, para obter dados de ductilidade (energia absorvida, expansão lateral e percentual de área dúctil) em relação a temperatura e com esses dados determinar-se a temperatura de transição dúctil – frágil e sua incerteza.

INTRODUCTION Good mine ventilation starts at the drawing board. A coal mine will either be adequately ventilated or not, depending upon how good a job was done in the planning. Poor planning will not only result in inadequate ventilation, but may also lead to low productivity. A mine foreman cannot achieve high productivity while trying to maintain 4.2 m3/s (9000 cfm) of air at his last open crosscut. PLANNING What will provide adequate ventilation? A rule of thumb in laying out a coal mine is to provide enough entries in the main entry system to keep air velocities at 2.5 m/s (500 fpm) or less; at this rate of flow, good ventilation may be expected. The intake and return air courses of a coal mine do not improve with age. Entries will deteriorate, ribs will slough, roof will fall, and clutter will accumulate. The resistance offered to air travel will continue to increase with each passing year. Providing enough airways for the present and the future cannot be emphasized too strongly. In order to better appreciate good planning and bring it into better focus, assume a hypothetical mine has the following features: entries 1.5 m (5 ft) high and 6.1 m (20 ft) wide; one intake and one return entry; the mine development is 4.8 km (3 miles) from the intake and upcast ventilation shafts; and the ventilation requirement is 141.6 m3/s (300,000 cfm). THE Caletones copper smelter of the Braden Copper Co. is in the " Teniente" mining district about SO km. (49.7 mi.) southeast of Santiago, Chile. From the seaports of San Antonio and Tralparaiso, the property is reached via the Chilean State Railway (66-in. gage) to Rancagua, whence the Braden railroad (30-in. gage) leads to the smelting plant at Caletones, 60 km. away at 5100 ft. elevation, and continues on to the mine and concentrator at Sewell, at 7000 ft. elevation, 12 km. farther into the Andes. The smelting plant was completed and put into commission in February, 1922. At the start, it smelted daily 750 tons of concentrates produced at Sewell from 10,000 tons of ore; later, its capacity was increased to 900 tons of concentrates from 12,000 tons of ore per day; and it is now being increased to 1100 tons of concentrates from 15,000 tons of ore per day. Automation and robotics are the keys to new intelligent autonomous mining systems which can remove operators from the hazardous and stressful mining environment and provide the tools for greater productivity. This pa-per presents the components necessary for a mining Intelligent Task Control System (ITCS) in dynamic unstructured mining environments. The proposed concept is applied to develop the ITCS for an autonomous excavator. The design and implementation of a fuzzy logic controller for an excavator that uses force/torque sensor feedback to complete excavation tasks is presented. Initial experimental results are also given.

[Two of the most useful and important equations available to the metallurgist for the study of plastic deformation of metals are the Huber-von Mises-Hencky1-3 and the St. Venant7-10 equations. HUBER-VON MISES-HENCKY EQUATION The Huber-von Mises-Hencky equation answers the question: When does plastic flow occur in metal that is subjected to a multi-axial stress? It occurs, according to this equation, when the three principal stresses,? al, a2, and a3 satisfy the equation: (s1 - s2)2 + (s 2 - s 3)2 + (s 1 ? s3)2 = 2K2 [I] Here K is the yield strength of the material as determined in an ordinary tensile test. If the quantities a1, a2, and a3 are assigned to the coordinates of a Cartesian three-dimensional system, this expression describes a cylinder whose axis of symmetry is inclined at equal angles to the three coordinate axes4,5 (Fig. I). The radius of this cylinder is v2/3K. For the purpose of simplicity, it is sometimes advantageous to ascribe the values s 1/K = si, s 2/K = s2, s 2/K = s3 to the three coordinate axes instead of the principal stress alone. In this case, Eq. I becomes (s1 - S2)2 + (S2 - S3)2 + (Sl - S3)2 = 2 [2] and the radius of the cylinder becomes 2/3v. The City of Akron will construct the Northside Interceptor Tunnel project, a U.S. EPA/ DOJ CSO Long Term Control Plan Project. The system will provide at least 10.3 million gallons of storage in a 16.5-foot finished ID and 6,660-foot-long rock tunnel. The system will reduce both overflow volume and number of overflow structures on the Cuyahoga River. The project includes deep drop shafts and more than 3,000 linear feet of 48 to 96-inch I.D. sewers installed by trenchless construction methods. This paper will discuss the project background, ground conditions, and other challenges overcome during the design phases.

"Traditionally deep shaft sinking from the ground surface was carried out using drill and blast methods. Although large diameter blind shaft drilling has been carried out successfully on numerous occasions previously, including as early as 1852 in Germany (Auld, 1995), little attempt has been made until more recently to mechanise the shaft sinking excavation process using down-the-hole machines. This paper reviews the development of deep shaft sinking machines from the early 1970’s up to the present day. INTRODUCTION Mechanical excavation methods can significantly improve excavation performance, in order to access natural resources faster, and labour safety is increased compared to drill and blast operations. However, shaft sinking machines need to be capable of accommodating all the basic requirements for deep shaft sinking, namely: 1. Excavation and muck removal 2. Ground stability control 3. Groundwater ingress control 4. Temporary lining installation 5. Permanent lining installation and watertight sealing 6. Ventilation 7. Secondary means of egress for personnel In addition, how the machine operates in the shaft is an important factor, either slung on ropes from a surface headgear or on its own in the bottom of the shaft. An all-embracing machine which can deal with all of the above conditions is impossible but many of these requirements can be incorporated into a single machine. Deep shaft sinking also differs greatly from normal tunnel construction which employs the use of either a roadheader arm installed within a shield or a full-face tunnelling machine for excavation. Hydrostatic pressure and ground stability problems increase with depth, whereas in tunnelling the depth is normally relatively shallow and the aforementioned factors remain approximately constant along the tunnel length. DEEP SHAFT SINKING MACHINES All the shaft sinking carried out previously in the UK was by the traditional method of drill and blast. Elsewhere, in other parts of the world, attempts have been made to mechanise the process."

Up until ten years ago the industry had arrived at a relatively conventional, and consistent design of coke ovens. Through the years the designers and builders were not being heavily taxed to come up with revolutionary new designs. However, the stimulus for design change was ever present. These stimuli for change are quite important and they are the driving force which produce improvements. The most obvious stimulus to change a design is commercial. To "build a better mouse trap and the world will beat a path to your door" is the well used cliche which best befits this philosophy. As in all businesses, coke oven designs require that all of the considerations, which affect the cost or the desirability of the design, be optimized. One way to increase the desirability of the particular design, 1s to make the design in- expensive to operate. Or, put another way, to increase production for the same operating cost

The Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR) has funded a four-year research project to develop a computer model 'which will predict the hydrologic impacts of phosphate mining on surface and groundwater systems. The core of the model is an analytical geographic information system (SPANS) which integrates EPA's Hydrology Simulation Program Fortran (HSPF) surface water model with the McDonald-Harbaugh groundwater model (MODFLOW). The hydrologic model conducts both event and continuous annual Simulations driven by variable precipitation and temperature data. The model is currently being calibrated and will be ready for distribution to the user community in mid-1991.

With the feature of finely-dissemination particle and complex mineral composition, oolitic hematite is considered to be the ore dressing difficult problem in the world. Series research on refractory oolitic hematite in Zhangjiakou Area are introduced as following: ore properties?technology mineralogy and mineral processing technology. The survey shows: with the fine grinding of the hematite to a fineness of -0.076mm 95%, obtaining iron concentrates grading 62.74% Fe at the recovery of 46.80% by high intensity magnetic separation- reverse flotation flowsheet; under the three stages intensity magnetic separation,four stages grinding and four stages gravity separation, getting the iron concentrates grading 61.09% Fe at the recovery of 45% using high intensity magnetic separation- gravity separation flowsheet; with roasting temperature of 800°C, time for 75~90min and ore-coal ratio of 11, gaining the iron concentrates assaying 62.74% Fe at the recovery of 87% by roasting- magnetic separation flowsheet. At present, this research is still doing for the target of raising the concentration recovery on the base of high grade concentrate. "Abstract - The development of robust 3-D geological models involves the integration of large amounts of public geological data, as well as additional accessible proprietary lithological, structural, geochemical, geophysical, and diamond drill hole data. 3-D models and maps have been available, particularly in the petroleum industry, for more than 10 years. Here, we demonstrate how robust 3-D maps can be used as interactive tools for mineral deposits exploration. In particular, we show how the interrogation of 3-D data sets can constrain exploration targets at depth. The main advantages of this technique for the mining industry are the homogeneity of data treatment and the validation of geological interpretations, taking into account geophysical and geochemical data. Data integration and cross-correlation of geology and geophysics can be achieved in two dimensions in any good GIS package. However, the added strength of 3-D analysis is the integration of separate data sets in three dimensions to build more complete, more realistic models, and in delineating areas of high economic potential at depth. Furthermore, these models can be modified and improved at any time by adding new data from ongoing drilling and geoscientific surveys. This paper presents two examples of 3-D models used for mineral exploration: the Joutel VMS mining camp and the Duparquet gold camp, Quebec. In both examples, the creation of the model is discussed and queries specific to the relevant exploration model are introduced. Eight potential exploration targets are generated at Joutel and seven at Duparquet. Although the targets defined are dependent on the details of the chosen queries, it is apparent that this technique has the potential to generate promising exploration activity that can engender new targets. Sommaire - Le développement de modèles 3-D géo-intégrés fiables implique l’intégration de grandes quantités de données géologiques publiques ainsi que des données lithologiques, structurales, géochimiques, géophysiques et de forages en provenance du secteur privé. L’industrie pétrolière dispose de modèles et de cartes 3-D depuis plus de 10 ans. Ce manuscrit présente un exemple d’utilisation de modèles et de cartes tridimensionnels détaillés comme outils interactifs dans l’exploration de dépôts métallifères. L’emphase est mise sur le processus d’interrogation des données en 3-D pour la définition de cibles d’exploration en profondeur. Les avantages principaux de cette technique sont l’uniformité du traitement des données et de la validation des interprétations géologiques, tout en tenant compte des données géophysiques et géochimiques. L’intégration de données et la corrélation de la géologie et de la géophysique peuvent être accomplies en deux dimensions dans n’importe quel logiciel SIG. La plus grande force de l’analyse 3-D demeure cependant la possibilité de construire des modèles complets et réalistes permettant de cibler des secteurs à haut potentiel économique en profondeur. De plus, ces modèles peuvent être modifiés et améliorés de manière interactive en ajoutant de nouvelles données provenant de forages et de levés géoscientifiques en cours. Ce manuscrit présente deux exemples de modèle 3-D géo-intégrés développés pour l’exploration minérale : le camp de SMV de Joutel et le camp aurifère de Duparquet, Québec. Dans les deux cas, la construction du modèle est décrite et les requêtes spécifiques à chaque type de gisement sont présentées. L’exercice a permis de définir huit cibles d’exploration potentielles à Joutel et sept à Duparquet. Bien que les cibles identifiées dépendent des contraintes utilisées pour les requêtes choisies, cette technique permet de générer de nouvelles cibles qui pourraient relancer l’activité d’exploration dans les camps miniers " matures " ou dans des secteurs moins explorés."

Estimating the probability of failure for embankments is not intuitive. It requires not only an appreciation of the strength of the embankment, but an understanding of the variability and uncertainty in the strength parameters as well. These additional aspects are, in themselves, relatively new to most practicing engineers, and therefore require some discussion.This paper discusses the concepts of probability and uncertainty, and presents a reliability-based numerical experiment, together with a literary study and collation of some of the author’s historical slope stability analyses, to investigate whether a direct relationship between safety factors and probabilities of failure exists for certain levels of uncertainty in strength parameters. In doing so, a useful tool is presented whereby knowing the safety factor of a simple slope or embankment with a consistent level of uncertainty, one can infer an approximate probability of failure.CITATION:Gover, S M, 2018. As a means of preventing accidents and advancing health and safety , the Holmes Safety Association disseminates information , gives instructions on subjects related to safety , and promotes first -aid and other forms of protective and accident - prevention training . This organization is intended to work and cooperate in the closest possible way with existing mine or plant safety organizations in conducting educational , social , and recreational activities for the promotion of health , safety , and efficiency .

The Cherry Creek tungsten district was explored by the Bureau of Mines from April 16 to August 13, 1942. This district is in north-central White Pine County, Nev., 50 miles north of Ely. Principal work was done on the property of the Cherry Creek Tungsten Mining Co. and at the adjacent Chance mine, although the entire district was examined and mapped. The exploratory work was done in cooperation with the Federal Geological Survey and comprised surveying, trenching, sampling, long-hole and core drilling, rehabilitation of mine workings, road building, drifting, and shaft sinking. The more important tungsten occurrences were explored by trenching and diamond drilling. Sixteen holes, having a total length of 2,515 feet, were drilled. The project resulted in partial development of three new tungsten deposits and small increases in the reserve tonnage of two scheelite-bearing lenses that were being mined by the company. The following pages summarize the history of the district, outline the ownership of the properties explored, and describe the physical features and mineral deposits. Mining and milling practices at the Cherry Creek tungsten mine are outlined, and the plan and results of project work are presented in detail together with surface maps, assay maps, and drill-hole logs.
