Nickel is used in a wide variety of applications from consumer goods to industrial uses. In many of these uses, nickel contributes to the environmental attributes of the product. The challenge, however, is measuring that contribution, comparing it to the environmental cost of production, and communicating the role of nickel to the customer in a way that is easy to understand. This paper presents the Nickel Institute?s approach to climate change as a global commodity industry association, and discusses where we stand with regard to some of these key questions. It also identifies issues for the nickel industry moving forward ? challenges that are likely to be common to other commodities.

Longwall mining is a highly productive and efficient coal mining method used in the USA. During longwall retreating, the belt entry must be maintained stable, and any roof fall in the belt entry would jeopardize mine safety and substantially interrupt the continuous production of coal in the longwall face. Past experience of longwall mining has shown that belt entry stability was the greatest challenge in longwall ground control, and the occurrence of roof falls in belt entries was largely associated with high horizontal stress. To properly support the roof in the belt entry, it is important to understand how longwall-induced horizontal stress changes affect roof stability in belt entries and to strategically install supplementary support to prevent any potential roof falls. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed horizontal stress measurements in the immediate roof of the belt entries for two Pittsburgh seam longwall panels oriented unfavorably to high horizontal stress. Hollow inclusion cells (HICells) were installed in the immediate roof at the intersection in each of the belt entries, and stress changes were monitored as the longwall face was approaching and passing the intersection. Numerical models were set up to calculate the longwall-induced horizontal stress changes in the roof at the monitoring sites. With the verified model, investigations were made of how horizontal stress is concentrated and relieved in the belt entry roof near the face under different panel orientations. Both measurements and modeling results showed that high horizontal stress is concentrated in the roof in the belt entry within about 15 m outby the face when a longwall panel is unfavorably oriented to the major horizontal stress. The study demonstrated that longwall-induced differential horizontal stress can be used as an indication of the degree of horizontal stress concentration. Roof support strategies are discussed on how to maintain the stability of belt entry under high horizontal stress concentration.

The story of America's progressing standard of living is the story of machines. The automobile, the airplane and the telephone for example have made our transportation and communication systems what they are today. Even they depend in turn on another machine -- the rock drill. By making it possible to economically mine and quarry minerals in large quantities, this versatile machine supports virtually every American industry relying on the earth for its buried raw materials. And, like all machines, the rock drill's mechanical evolution was stimulated by production demands placed upon it. All percussion drills are mechanized versions of the original drilling unit -- man, Figure - illustrates a double jack team at work before the turn of the century. The man with the sledge hammer is the impact device while the man sitting is the rotation mechanism and feed motor. The first drifter drills (Figure 2) performed the same function but with increased mechanical efficiency. A piston controlled by a valve produced impact. A built-in ratcheting mechanism provided rotation and a hand-cranked screw provided feed thrust. As the industrial revolution proceeded into the twentieth century, the demand for raw materials stimulated refinements of all recovery machinery, including rock drills. As drills became heavier and more powerful, a mounting (or carrier) had to be provided to move the drill from hole to hole. This resulted in the development of the wagon drill (Figure 3). Propelled by muscle power, the wagon drill was for years the standard tool of the surface drilling industry (Figure 4). Gracias a un trabajo en conjunto, la maximización del sistema de molienda SAG se consigue de manera sostenible con la integración del equipo de voladura en las optimizaciones realizadas en la planta, de manera que se logra incrementar la operación a 150 kton/día, lo que utiliza de manera eficiente la energía de la operación.

The Coal Preparation Division of the Pittsburgh Mining Technology Center conducted an investigation to assess and compare the pyritic sulfur reduction potential of coal-pyrite flotation and high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS). Tests were run on three coals--an Upper Freeport bed coal, a Lower Kittanning bed coal, and a Pittsburgh bed coal--to establish grade- recovery relationships characteristic of both processes. Representative portions of each coal sample were crushed to two top sizes--nominal minus 35 mesh (0.5 mm) and nominal minus 100 mesh (0.149 mm)--and subjected to conventional froth flotation. The froth product was then beneficiated by coal-pyrite flotation or HCMS to provide a direct technical comparison of the two processes. At minus 35 mesh (0.5 mm), the size normally employed for coal flotation, both coal-pyrite flotation and HGMS effectively separated pyrite from coal, and the performance of the two processes was essentially the same. At a size of minus 100 mesh (0.149 mm) , however, the performance of HGMS exceeded that of coal- pyrite flotation. The separations effected by HGMS were more efficient at minus 100 mesh (0.149 mm) than at minus 35 mesh (0.5 mm). On the other hand, it was concluded that either the effectiveness of coal-pyrite flotation decreases with diminishing top size, or the process has not been optimized to treat material finer than 35 mesh (0.5 mm).

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal , expressed in British thermal units , and the composition as shown by proximate analyses . To these , when required , are added the ash- softening temperature , the free- swelling index , and the Hardgrove grindability index . Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal , and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract . The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions 4/ issued by the Bureau of Mines ; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and , if it is not , a price adjustment is made . Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks ) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids . In addition , the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal . The Government purchased approximately 5 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1963 . In connection with these purchases , the Bureau analyzed 6,999 samples . These are published ( table 1 ) for the use of Government officials and the public . A series of publications has been completed on coal analyses by States or , where production is small in any one State , by groups of adjacent States . The explosion hazard of methane-air mixtures has become an increasingly serious mine planning problem, and an advance assessment of methane gas potential can therefore be essential for a safe and economic mine development pro- gram. As part of its coal mine health and safety program, the Bureau of Mines has developed a simple, inexpensive test to measure the methane content of coal samples obtained from exploration cores. The gas content of coal per unit weight as determined by the direct method test can be used as a basis for a preliminary estimate of mine ventilation requirements, and to determine if degasification of the coalbed in advance of mining should be considered. Since the Bureau began measuring the gas content of coal samples in 1972, experience has led to equipment and procedural changes, the most significant of which has been the development of a ball mill for crushing the coal sample to release the residual gas at the end of the desorption test period. This revised procedure replaces the crushing box and graphical methods described in earlier Bureau publications. The results of 583 direct method tests are summarized in tabular form. These results include data on the gas content of 125 coalbeds in 15 States.

COAL of sub-bituminous rank underlies much of the plains area of Alberta. This coal is geo-logically young, and occurs in Belly River and Edmonton strata of Up-per Cretaceous age. Generally, the seams are flat-lying, but in some areas they may dip as much as 5 degrees. The overburden, composed mainly of glacial clays and sand-stones, may vary in depth from a few feet to several thousand feet. Recovery of the coal has 'been by drift, slope, and shaft underground mines, and by open-pit stripping operations. Production has been obtained from a large number of mines, most of which have been relatively small and with preparation equipment limited to a loading tipple with screening facilities, and a picking belt where high-ash materials can be removed from the larger sizes. The coal has been sold for domestic and industrial space-heating, for production of process steam, and for power generation. In re-cent years competition from natural gas, propane, and oil has seriously interfered with the production and marketing of sub-bituminous coal, especially with the disposal of the smaller sizes at a realistic price.

This paper describes current research by the Bureau of Mines to develop technology for improving efficiency and productivity in metal/ nonmetal mines. The research program addresses a wide variety of problems associated with each of the major categories of mining: underground mining, surface mining, in situ mining, and premining investigations. An overview of the Bureau's research activities is given with emphasis on underground mining. In particular, two innovative and promising concepts currently under development are described: a unique shaft sinking system that uses an impact hammer for rock fragmentation, and a low-profile, portable crusher for underground hard-rock applications.

We propose a dynamic biomechanical simulation method that uses motion capture to evaluate the risk of Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs). Statistics show that WMSDs accounted for 33% of all non-fatal occupational injuries and illness in construction in 2009, and were a leading cause of temporary and permanent disability. Present methods rely largely on self-reports from workers, observational techniques, and direct measurements of motion and muscle activity to assess awkward postures, physical loads, repetitiveness, and the duration of exposure. While these methods have helped to prevent WMSDs in construction work, they may not be suitable for estimating the internal tissue loads associated with WMSDs. We propose a dynamic biomechanical simulation method to estimate internal forces and moments at each body joint of construction workers with motion capture data. Particularly, we explore the biomechanical loads by simulating active 3D musculoskeletal models based on measured postures and movements. To demonstrate the feasibility of this approach, we studied a ladder climbing task using a portable ladder under controlled laboratory conditions. Postures and motions were determined with a commercial motion capture system (e.g., VICON). The results were analyzed to investigate the feasibility of identifying risk factors based on biomechanical simulation. The results show that the proposed approach allows us to determine the biomechanical basis for WMSDs, and to identify postures and movements associated with excessive physical demands on each body joint. When combined with marker-less motion capture which is our ongoing work, the proposed approach has the potential to assess an individual?s motions and to provide personalized feedback for the purpose of reducing biomechanical loads and WMSD risk in real workplaces.

LKAB’s Kiirunavaara Mine is a sublevel caving iron-ore mine located above the polar circle in northern Sweden. The mine has been proclaimed seismically active since 2008 after a magnitude 3 seismic event, according to Swedish National Seismic Network (SNSN). At that time the Kiruna Mine did not have mine-wide seismic system. Since then, the Kiruna Mine experienced several damaging seismic events of which the largest one on the May 18, 2020. The magnitude, based on the moment tensor inversion results on data from the SNSN as well as seismic stations in Finland and Norway, is estimated to 4.2 ± 0.2 moment magnitude. The seismic event on the May 18, 2020 was located in the middle of the one of the productions areas and caused the major damage in the mine, damaging several kilometres of drifts on six mining levels, some of them beyond the practical repair. These damages affected four of ten production areas on several levels, some more some less. Luckily, no person got injured from the seismic event and the very long aftershock series. An important part in the whole process after the seismic event was information flow and decision-making process. It was very important to keep workers and community informed as that contributed transparency of decision-making and decreased the speculations. Resuming the production in the damaged areas in the safe manner, very soon become main focus for the mine management. It was obvious that not only rehabilitation of the areas is needed to resume the production. It was A MUST to understand the factors behind the seismic event and its mechanism to be able to avoid same situation and prevent seismic event of similar size. Mine engineers had to think outside the box to find the solutions to ‘rescue’ every drift that they could to be able to make good enough base for continued mining of the area. The paper describes actions taken in a very complex process of recovering the area that we from the beginning thought need to be abandon. Seismological analyses of the event on May 18, 2020 and past activity in the area, damage mapping, detailed studies of structures and geology, numerical modelling as well as engineering judgement were used as base for all our decisions how to proceed in attempt to restore mining of the area heavily damaged by 4.2 moment magnitude seismic event, in a safe way.

The Cordero mine is located in the Nevada portion of the Opalite Mining district that straddles the Oregon-Nevada state boundary. The mercury deposits of the district occur along the margins of the broad east-west graben valley of McDermitt Creek. The only other major producers, the Opalite and Bretz mines, on the northern margin of the graben have thus far exploited only shallow deposits within 100 feet of the surface. Through December 1965, Cordero has produced 94,680 flasks of mercury, the most of which came from the large underground cinnabar deposit. Nearly all of the mercury ore deposits in this district have been found in Miocene rhyolitic intrusives, flows, tuffs, and lake beds. These rhyolites have been argillically altered at depth and extensively silicified at or near the surface. These silicified areas or "opalite" masses were the original cinnabar-bearing outcrops.

The paper describes the discovery, location and events concerning three types of heating which have occurred in recent years: a) in a district being salvaged, b) in the shaft pillar at an air-crossing, and c) in the gate side of a production district, all of which have occurred in the Beeston Seam at collieries in the deeper eastern part of the area. The paper describes the precautions, air sampling arrangements, training methods and codes of practice which have been adopted at collieries where spontaneous combustion is, or is likely to be, a hazard. The air samples taken from behind the stoppings following the sealing off of the salvaging district are examined and interpreted. The problem of effectively sealing off where more than two stoppings are required is made apparent. Other lessons have been learned as a result of these heatings and are described in the paper.

This report summarizes the results of metallurgical investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines of manganese oxide ore, averaging 23 to 25 percent manganese, stockpiled at the Butte-Philipsburg depot of General Services Administration (GSA). The oxide ores were stockpiled in two general classifications, straight oxide ore and mixed oxide-carbonate ore. Continuous-circuit flotation tests at the Albany (Oreg.) Metallurgy Research Center of the Bureau of Mines showed that each of these ore types could be concentrated by an oil-emulsion scheme to produce a concentrate that could be sintered to meet program specifications. About 88 percent of the manganese was recovered in the concentrate from the straight oxide sample, with the sintered concentrate containing 48 percent Mn. The sintered concentrate from the mixed oxide-carbonate sample contained 41 percent Mn with a recovery in the concentrate of 95 percent.

Continuing interest has been shown in developing processes for extracting nickel and cobalt from low-grade domestic deposits of these metals and in improving existing methods. Of special concern is the nickel-recovery installation at Nicaro, Oriente Province, Cuba, operated for the General Services Administration. The Bureau? of Mines felt that a bibliography would help familiarize personnel at various Bureau of Mines stations and General Services Administration contractors with extraction methods both in the United States and in foreign countries. When this task was under way it became apparent that to compile a complete bibliography would require considerable time, so it was decided to limit the first part to the later literature and issue it independently, thus making it available sooner. The present work supplements the first part and extends the coverage to the earliest years of nickel and cobalt metallurgy.

The Sally Malay Project is located 120 km north of Halls Creek in the eastern Kimberley region. Since commissioning, ongoing improvements on the plant have resulted in recoveries now greatly exceeding the initial design targets. The continual optimisation endeavours of the Sally Malay metallurgy department included an automation project that was done in close collaboration with Mintek. In this team effort, several problem areas were addressed and the FloatStar advance control system was successfully commissioned to stabilise and optimise the flotation circuit. The remote location of the Kimberley Nickel Mines operation, fly-in, fly-out roster and the current mining boom makes the acquisition of experienced flotation staff difficult. The implementation of an automated flotation control system reduces this burden and contributes to the training of inexperienced staff. This paper illustrates not only the process control improvements achieved as a result of the installation of the FloatStarÖ advanced control system, but also how it has assisted operational personnel with their understanding of the process.

The fact that coal is a complex organic material and heterogeneous in composition has made its study extremely difficult, particularly in regard to obtaining a fundamental concept of the processes involved in the formation of coke. It has been stated recently that coals are natural polymers and that in a complex reaction such as occurs during carbonization the differences between coals are quantitative and not qualitative. Such being the case, it would be expected, therefore, that a series of coals subjected to exactly the same conditions of coking would produce results that should be related quantitatively to the chemical analyses of the individual coals. In the past, however, this fact was not generally recognized and consequently many empirical test methods were devised for testing coals. The interpretation of the results obtained depended upon comparing a set of data with other data on coals of known characteristics. The testing procedure had to be con- ducted in precisely the same manner each time and not the least requirement in making the interpretation was experience. The test methods varied from those utilizing a gram of coal to the plant-scale tests in which one or more ovens were charged with the test coal. The aim had been principally to find some simple, inexpensive means by which the coke-making and other properties of coal could be predicted. It is not necessary to emphasize the importance of these endeavors, for anyone acquainted with the problems involved in the selection of coals for making coke is well aware of the time and expense involved in making a series of definitive tests.

The oxo reaction consists of catalytic conversion of olefins by reacting the olefins with CO and H2 (water gas) to aldehydes that contain one more carbon atom than the starting olefin. The aldehydes are then generally reduced with hydrogen to primary alcohols in a second stage. The two-stage process is called the oxo process. The word "oxo" is derived from the German "oxierung" (ketonization); thus the exact English equivalent of "oxo" is "keto". The oxo process may be applied to nearly all olefins. A wide range of pressures and temperatures may be used in both stages. The pressure range usually employed is 150 to 200 atmosheres. The temperature in the first stage is usually about 140° C. and in the second or hydrogenation stage about 180° C. Although a standard Fischer-Tropsch catalyst may be used for both steps, cheaper catalysts have been utilized to effect hydrogenation of the aldehydes. Most of the information for this, report on the oxo process was gathered from Technical Oil Mission microfilms. T.O.M. Reels 14, 55, and 134 were especially valuable. T.O.M. Report 6 by H. M. Weir was very helpful. Information on the oxo process is scattered throughout documents captured in enemy territory, and the present report does not include all the available data. Some of the information was procured by personal interview. Where, in the body of this report, certain investigators are quoted, the source of the statement is either personal interview or the T.O.M. reports.
