"No. 9 Walton is a new high-rise condominium building located in the Gold Coast area of Chicago. The adjacent building, Walton on the Park, featured 4 levels of below grade parking and utilized a secant pile wall with integral drilled shafts to support the exterior columns. The earth retention system (ERS) for No. 9 Walton also employed a secant pile wall in combination with drilled shafts. The excavation into the soft Chicago clays varied in depth from 9.75 m to 12.5 m (32 feet to 41 feet) below grade. The temporary excavation support used internal braces from the new secant piles to the existing foundation system of Walton on the Park to provide earth retention. Engineering teams for both projects worked together to design the bracing scheme and connections to ensure that the new excavation and internal bracing would not overstress any elements of the existing structure. Further complicating the project, immediately to the west of the project was a historic church founded on shallow spread footings which required underpinning to minimize movements.The project involved three different building owners, small values for acceptable wall movement, an extensive monitoring program and the challenges of merging two earth retention systems. The subsurface conditions at the site, the adjacent structures, the excavation, and the performance are described. A summary of the design methods and the expected movements of the ERS are discussed, and the performance monitoring system is described. Overall, the ERS performed better than expected with less than 1 inch of measured lateral wall movement during and after the excavation was completed. Measured performance of the ERS is compared to the predicted performance and to the performance requirements for the project.INTRODUCTIONNo. 9 Walton is a new high-rise condominium building in Chicago located in the Gold Coast. Developers originally slated the project to be Phase 2 of the Walton on the Park development built in the mid 2000’s, using portions of the existing foundation system for development of the new structure. However, the housing market crash in 2007 prompted cancellation of Phase 2 of the Walton on the Park development. The property sat undeveloped until 2015 when design and construction for No. 9 Walton began under a new development and design team. The project team completed foundation excavation and below grade structures in 2016 with the first units of the building turned over to new homeowners in 2017.The structural design for No. 9 Walton consisted of reinforced concrete columns and slabs, supported laterally by a heavily reinforced concrete central core. Drilled shafts to rock supported the interior columns and core with the exterior columns and foundations integrally included in the earth retention system. The structure had a below-grade footprint of approximately 1,490 m2 (16,000 ft2). The general excavation extended 9.75 m to 12.5 m (32 feet to 41 feet) below street level with the deepest portions at the central building core mat foundation."

The size, complex issues, and requirements to construct large number of tunnels, for a single project, expeditiously, and without exceeding the overall project budget, a program Construction Management (CM) team is highly recommended to be selected early during design process to provide guidance/direction relative to contract packaging and scheduling. This paper is not focused on the project itself, however, the emphasis is on experiences gained from the project. Wishing that some of the strategies described in this paper will be of value to owners of underground project.

This discussion of accounting will describe the statements and the information that the accounting system produces, from the point of view of those who use such systems rather than of those who prepare them and who do the detail and technical accounting work. In any well organized mine, quarry, or other enterprise exploiting a mineral deposit, no matter how small, some clerical and accounting work must be done. Miners and other employes must be paid, supplies must be purchased and issued, and various tax and information returns, which even the smallest enterprise must file, have to be prepared. In this chapter it is assumed that the enterprise has employes of this type and that they understand the fundamentals of record keeping and accounting. It would be impossible here to give sufficiently full explanations to enable a man with no previous clerical and accounting training to set up and operate an accounting and cost system for even the simplest extractive operation. Rather, we shall hope first, to tell the investor and the operator, from the chief engineer or president down to a subforeman, what to expect from the accounting statements and records and how to use this information in his daily work; and second, that it will enable the man with some knowledge of accounting or bookkeeping, but with little or no experience in any extractive industry, to set up and operate a satisfactory system for a mine or other extractive enterprise. For readers who wish to go further, the bibliography at the end of this chapter contains many references. The emphasis has, therefore, been placed on the statements to be produced and the purposes for which they are to be used rather than the underlying books and records. These are, with a few exceptions which will be described later, essentially what might be found in any industrial enterprise and would probably, in the extremely small enterprise, consist of handwritten journals, ledgers, analysis books, payroll books, and stores ledgers. In the larger enterprise, various types of mechanical accounting would be introduced in proportion to the complexity of the operation.

In 2014 the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) awarded a Design-Build contract to the joint venture team consisting of Skanska which is the managing partner; Kiewit Corporation and Ecco III (SKE) and HNTB as the lead design firm. The design build team employed methods to provide schedule savings and commercial benefits to the owner NYSDOT. This paper presents the design approach and construction methods used to accelerate drilled shaft installation supporting the main span foundation for the cable stayed bridge. The drilled foundation contractor Underpinning and Foundation Skanska, a division of Skanska was responsible for assisting with design, budgeting and construction of the drilled shaft foundation construction. As part of the Request for Proposal (RFP) bid process, Alternate Technical Concepts (ATC) was encouraged by the NYSDOT. The JV team proposed an ATC which involved a scaled production shaft testing method to simulate the ultimate load level, commonly referred to as the “Chicago Method” was used in the rock socket employing the Osterberg Cell (O-Cell) testing procedures. To the authors knowledge this was the first NYSDOT project where this approach was utilized on a Demonstration/Production installation to validate construction procedures and load bearing capacities. Construction procedures, challenges and solutions are discussed in detail. Upon completion of successful drilled shaft construction, concrete integrity is verified using two methods – Cross Hole Sonic Logging (CSL) and Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP). A comparison from the contractor’s perspective is provided. Finally the drilled shaft rock socket is tested to ultimate end bearing values while rock socket side shear stresses are not exceeding the service level loading. Lateral load test was also a RFP requirement; the test arrangement and performance are discussed in detail as well. The Kosciuszko Bridge location poised unique geotechnical challenges on many levels shifting towards an extreme boundary of parameters encountered in New York City Area for drilled shaft construction. The JV team and specialty drilled shaft contractor actively participating in the shaft design and construction practice coordination and working with NYSDOT yielded a successful foundation solution which provided cost and schedule savings to the project.

ALTHOUGH the contribution of Algeria, including the Sahara, to the local economy and to world mineral supply was small for many years, the spectacular development of an important petroleum and natural-gas industry has changed the position of the country. In 1963 there were decreases in output of most mineral commodities, however oil and gas production forged ahead and established new records. The impact of adverse market conditions and especially the competition from lower cost producing areas was felt by both the metals and nonmetals industries. This and the general economic conditions related to the recovery of the country following the years of strife attending its emergence as an independent state combined to hold back production and development commensurate with resources. The principal events of the year were in the petroleum sector and included the first commercial production from several new fields, some new discoveries, the virtual completion of the first petroleum refinery in the country, and installation of additional pipelines. Progress was made toward the further utilization of the vast resources of natural gas and the provision of additional transportation and refining facilities. In the mining domain the government took over two iron-mining operations, and progress was made towards expanding production of phosphate rock and determining methods of upgrading the Tindouf Iron ores. Completion of the iron and steel plant near Bone was further delayed. The only coal mine reportedly closed down in late 1963.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a field study to assess the performance of various chain pillar configurations in terms of gate road entry sta-bility. Vibrating wire stressmeters (VWS's) were installed in four consecutive gate road chain pillars. Field data collected during panel retreat were analyzed to gain a better understanding of the mechanics of vertical load redistribution in gate road chain pillars as it relates to ground control problems. Several different pillar configurations were investigated including abutment-yield and yield-abutment-yield designs. The Bureau of Mines estimated the remaining lode gold endowment of eight mining districts in Alaska using historic production data. A log-arithmic model of cumulative tonnage of ore processed versus cumulative grade was applied to the following districts: Chichagof, Fairbanks, Homer, Hope-Seward, Juneau, Ketchikan, Prince William Sound, and Willow Creek. To assess the remaining endowment, a computerized production data base was compiled from Bureau records. These data were aggregated in 5-yr intervals for each district. Data were sorted in order of declining grade, and log cumulative grade was plotted against log cumulative tonnage. Linear regression was performed on the data for each district. The linear equation for each curve was used to predict remaining endowment at a limiting mining grade. Based on conservative extrapolation of the grade-tonnage curves, a substantial total endowment of 8,415,100 tr oz of gold remains in the eight districts. The districts with the greatest remaining endowment are the Juneau, Chichagof, Fairbanks, and Willow Creek Districts.

A gold sampling optimization study was carried out in support of open pit gold mining operations for the Newmont Gold Company Bootstrap-Capstone deposits in Northeastern Nevada. Six bulk samples were tested using fire refining techniques at field particle size, to determine coarse particle heterogeneity of the ores, and by gravity .concentration methods at 10 mesh particle size, to observe any particulate gold liberation. An overall sampling model is presented for the deposit based on the pooled test information, to reconcile the results of coarse particle heterogeneity testing and the fine particle 'liberation testing. The sampling model is used to recommend procedures to control the variability of gold grade estimation due to the fundamental error (nugget effect) during sampling, sample preparation and assaying of the ores and other fundamental variances. The technique of simplified quantitative risk analysis (SQRA) is used to provide an economic justification for implementation of. recommended improvements to field sampling practices.

Three explosives with different detonation characteristics were tested by studying their cratering ability in a granite-gneiss. The strain wave generating characteristics of these explosives were also studied in the same rock medium. Correlations between the relative performance of three explosives as evaluated by crater studies and other methods of evaluation are indicated. Numerous test methods have been employed to evaluate the output performance of explosives; for example, the underwater explosion method, the airblast method and the ballistic pendulum method.'*' For blasting applications, the study of explosion produced craters and explosion generated strain waves are the most meaningful. This laboratory has employed these techniques extensively for many years and has shown that the detonation properties of explosives and their ability to generate strain waves in rock are related and that the amplitude and shape of the strain wave is related to some of the crater parameters such as slab thickness and fly rock velocity.3'11 However, a good comparison between the relative performance of explosives as determined by the crater and strain wave methods had not been made. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if the relative performance of three explosives as determined by the crater method shows a correlation with the relative performance as determined by the strain wave method. If a good correlation exists between these two sets of relative performance, it should then be possible to relate the detonation properties of an explosive to its ability to break rock in a crater test. In most commercial blasting operations, the diameter of the blast hole remains constant even though the type of explosive may change. In general, it is the explosive volume rather than the weight which remains constant when two or more explosives of different density are compared. Therefore all tests in this investigation were conducted on a constant volume basis rather than on a constant weight basis. TEST SITE AND ROCK PROPERTIES The tests described in this paper were conducted at a granite quarry owned and operated by the Consolidated Quarries Div. of the Georgia Marble Co. at Lithonia, Ga. The tests were performed in an area where the exposed rock surface was nearly horizontal and where the general rock mass had few joints or faults. The rock has an apparent sp gr of 2.6 and a longitudinal propagation velocity of 18,000 fps. The characteristic impedance of Lithonia granite gneiss is 53(lb - sec/in3). EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE There are many parameters which must be considered in the study of explosion-produced craters. The role played by each variable in the explosive-rock-crater system can be determined by experimental techniques in which one parameter is varied while others are maintained constant. In this investigation, the crater geometry was studied as the depth was varied for each of three explosives. The explosive volume and rock-type were held constant for all crater tests. The experimental arrangement used in performing the crater tests is illustrated schematically in Fig. 1.

As a result of a changing market pattern for anthracite, there is now an increasing demand for steam size and a decreasing demand for domestic sizes. To help the producer meet this new demand, the authors present the technical aspects of the problem of crushing domestic sizes to steam fineness and size. The market pattern for anthracite coal has changed considerably in recent years. The demand for domestic sizes has been gradually decreasing and the demand for the steam sizes has been increasing. The companies however aim for a maximum production of domestic sizes, since these sizes command premium prices. To meet the market demands, particularly in certain periods of the year, further size reduction of the coarse clean coal is necessary. The present practice of multistage crushing in toothed rolls leads to complicated flow arrangements and is high in cost. Data presented herein indicate that crushers with high reduction ratios could be used with a resulting simplification of crushing flows and an appreciable reduction of capital and operating costs. The different types of crushing equipment investigated included the rotary-type breaker, the jaw crusher, the impactor-type crusher, and the Aerofall mill. CURRENT PRACTICE The standard sizes of anthracite are presented in Table I and market specifications require that any given size be maintained with only a limited amount of oversize and undersize material. The 1958 prices of the various sizes also are presented, so it may be seen that size reduction is only performed when dictated by market demands. At the present time the general practice of crushing anthracite consists of removing the top size and crushing it in a toothed double roll crusher to the next largest size. Consequently, to reduce the domestic egg, stove, and nut sizes to steam sizes of pea, buck, rice, and barley, the original material must be screened to produce the three top sizes and each size must be crushed in three separate rolls to the next largest size. Each crushed product must then be rescreened to remove the oversize for re crush ing. Thus a typical operation would consist of scalping the egg size from a mixture, crushing it to stove size, and rescreening the product. This same cycle would be repeated for the stove and nut sizes requiring three screens and three crushers as well as conveying equipment to handle the crushed products. This results in an expensive series of operations to make a product which sells for a lower price. If the three top sizes are crushed in one operation to the smaller sizes then the yield of steam sizes is low and the production of Nos. 4 and 5 sizes is large. These sizes sell for lower prices than the steam sizes. A typical operation is presented in Fig. 1. From the figure it may be seen that the original cleaned anthracite contains 67.4 pet domestic sizes, 26.4 pct steam sizes, and 6.2 pct fines. After multistage crushing of the domestic to steam sizes the composition of the product is 0.6 pct domestic sizes, 89.6 pct steam sizes, and 9.8 pct fines. Over the years many attempts have been made to develop a means of assessing the excavatability of rock. Most of them are based on an empirical rating system while some authorities still propose the use of seismic velocity as a direct predictor of the rippability of a rock mass. On the other hand there are a number of classical models which have been developed to define the cutting force required at the pick or tooth of continuous miners.While these methods have been applied with various degrees of success to the design of excavation systems there is no generally acceptable method of defining the excavatability or cuttability of a rock mass in terms of the machine power required to generate a particular rate of production.The authors have attempted to overcome this deficiency by recording the intact and rock mass properties at a number of surface mines where continuous miners were in use and to use this data to examine the relationships between the relevant dimensionless groups developed from a dimensional analysis of the problem.The results obtained are encouraging and it appears that this new approach to the problem could lead to civil and mining engineers having a means of predicting the cutting power required to excavate rock at a given rate at any site.While this paper does not include a review of past work it refers to a number of key publications which will give the reader an excellent introduction to the subject.It is important to point out that the research work reported in this paper is part of a doctoral research project at Curtin University of Technology on the Influence of Intact Rock and Rock Mass Properties on the Design of Surface Mines. One of the major objectives of this project is to explore the possibility of developing a technique for predicting the excavatability of rock in surface mines at the design stage.This paper therefore commences with a brief reference to the continuous surface miners in use at the test sites followed by some original work by the authors in applying Dimensional Analysis to analyse the macro-performance of mechanical excavators. Following an analysis of the experimental data the authors validate the wider use of the model by referring to its successful application in predicting the power required to excavate rock by continuous surface miners at other sites.

The metallurgical laboratory data developed in this study indicate an improved electrowinning process for producing higher purity cerium ingot. A typical sample of the Reno electrocerium contains 99.9 weight-percent cerium and the following impurities: Total other rare-earth elements, less than 0.04 percent; iron not detected; silicon and aluminum, less than 0.02 percent each; calcium plus magnesium, less than 0.01 percent; carbon, 0.01 percent; oxygen, 0.002 percent; hydrogen, 0.0003 percent; and nitrogen, 0.0015 percent.

"This paper describes the successful pilot plant testing of a flowsheet, developed at Inca Ltd.&apos;s J. Roy Gordon Research Laboratory (JRGRL), for improved separation of the constituent minerals in a bulk copper-nickel concentrate.The flowsheet utilized the fact that xanthate concentration on the mineral surfaces is the most important variable affecting the high lime separation and that reduction of the xanthate concentration could be affected by an oxidative conditioning stage.When the adsorbed xanthate was reduced to a suitably low level, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite could be floated to leave a high-grade nickel concentrate as the residue. Sodium cyanide was added to the froth product 10 depress pyrrhotite and any remaining pentlandite. The temporary depression of chalcopyrite by the sodium cyanide was overcome by introducing a conditioning step following cyanide addition . The advantages of the flowsheet; improved copper-nickel separation, operation without heating of the pulp, production of both high-grade nickel concentrate (29.5% Ni, .26% Cu) and copper concentrate (<0.5% Ni, 30% Cu) were all realized.IntroductionLaboratory test work undertaken at Inco and described previously(1) has demonstrated the importance of low xanthate concentrations on the mineral surfaces in the copper-nickel separation at the Copper Cliff mill.It was determined that oxidation of the separator feed (a cleaned bulk concentrate, grading about 11% Cu and 11% Ni) to lower the xanthate concentration on the mineral surfaces prior to separation significantly improved the quality of the separation (CI 4)*, particularly when no cyanide is used, but also when cyanide is added. As well, it was found that the oxidation permitted a pentlandite-pyrrhotite separation - the oxidation step brought about a decrease in the flotation-rate of pentlandite leaving pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite largely unaffected. Consequently, it was possible to produce a highgrade pentlandite product (30% Ni, 0.3% Cu) at ~83% Ni recovery , as well as a high-grade copper concentrate (0.5% Ni, 30% Cu at -96% Cu recovery)."

Mine pit slopes in the Pacific Rim are a geotechnical challenge because of the complex geology in which they are developed. Mines are currently being fast-tracked to meet the increase in commodity prices, often resulting in some reduction in ground studies and short-cutting of design procedures. In addition, the resources boom means that skilled personnel are in relatively short supply. At a time when mine pits are getting bigger and deeper, and the engineering is getting more demanding, there is an increased demand on managers to effectively implement the work. &nbsp; Experience both in New Zealand and the Philippines, display the complex range of geological environments in which pits are being excavated. Working in these conditions has shown that successful geotechnical design requires a strong geotechnical model based on sound geology. An appropriate level of investigation and analyses results in a certain level of understanding for the mine design. There is a point where additional expenditure (on investigation and analyses) is not warranted based on the expected minimal impact on decreasing the level of perceived risk on the project. For most projects in our experience the analytical methods and complexity of geotechnical assessment changes increases as the level of knowledge grows.

On September 3rd, 1947, the Acadia Coal Company put into operation a central coal preparation plant. This plant was designed to process all coals mined by this Company in the Pictou County coal field. The problem, briefly, was to make a three-way separation of the raw coal fed into the plant. It was desired to remove all stone, metal, and wood from the marketable coal and to produce a splint coal from the raw material which would be suitable for making power. This splint coal product is belted directly to the power plant which is adjacent to the wash plant. To attain this object it was therefore necessary, first, to wash the raw coal, removing all splint, stone, metal, and wood. The stone, metal, wood, and highest-ash splint had then to be removed by a second washing in order to obtain the lower-ash splint for use in the power plant. The plant is on the east side of the Allan colliery, in the town of Stellarton (see accompanying photograph). It is of steel frame construction with wood siding, covered on the exterior with corrugated galvanized iron. Considerable concrete had to be poured for the foundation piers as the plant site is largely &apos;fill&apos; ground. This necessitated the construction of extremely heavy footings containing a large amount of reinforcing steel. In all, 884 cu. yds. of concrete were poured for the various pits, tanks, and foundations; its average test was about 3,500 lb. per square inch. At the time the plant was constructed, the steel shortage in Canada and the United States was acute and, in order to obtain steel for the structure which is four stories high- an unused part of the Allan bankhead was torn down. Enough steel was obtained from this demolition to fabricate the new plant.

The Bayer process treating Jamaican bauxite was evaluated from an economic standpoint, using standard estimating methods and published data, to present a reference point for cost estimates for nonbauxite alumina processes. The estimated operating cost for a plant producing 1,000 tons of alumina a day is $47.96 per ton of alumina when charging $8 per ton for bauxite and $2.30 per hour for direct labor. The estimated fixed capital cost is $46 million.

Alaska Village Electric Cooperative (AVEC), an electric utility cooperative providing power to 51 Alaska villages, has made a concerted effort to install wind turbines in the villages they serve in an effort to mitigate the growing costs of electrical power generation. The subsurface soils in several of these villages consist of sands and silts with ground temperatures of between 30°F and 32°F. The presence of warm, degrading permafrost in three of the villages has required innovative foundation designs, including the use of helical piers and piles to support steel and concrete wind turbine foundations. The design of the deep foundations had to account for the effects of degrading permafrost likely resulting from observed climate change patterns. Uplift forces imposed on the foundations were approximately 100 kips per pile. Uplift pile load testing was conducted on the installed piers and piles in order to determine the actual working load that each pier or pile could sustain. In addition, pile driving analyzer testing was conducted on several piles installed in the permafrost and compared to pile load tests. Results indicated that the installed piers and piles achieved the necessary capacity with sufficient factors of safety. Thermosyphons were installed near the foundations in order to limit the effects of climate change on the permafrost. The two to four wind turbines in each of the three villages are currently operational. Refinement of the design based on the pile testing from the first village to the third has decreased the cost of the tower foundations and improved our understanding of designing for warm, degrading permafrost.

This report describes the design, development and manufacture of a prototype quiet hard rock stoper drill and results of its field tests. It is shown that the stoper drill noise level can be reduced from 118 dBA to below 100 dBA by using this design. The design concept of this drill is based on a valveless independent rotation system, use of an integral muffler and pivot mount. The drill was manufactured in a standard commercial drill manufacturing setup and organization. The design and production technology proved that commercially viable quiet drills can be made available for mine use.

A major problem encountered in dump leaching operations is the plugging of both the dump and the piping by precipitated iron compounds. Bureau of Mines research to obtain basic data on agitation leaching and dump leaching methods has shown that the addition of organic chelating reagents can significantly enhance the lixiviant permeability through the ore and the concentration of the metal values in the liquor. For example, the addition of 5 giL citric acid (CA) to a conventional sulfuric acid lixiviant almost doubled the fluid flow rate through 5-cm-diameter laboratory columns containing copper ore. After 185 h of per-colation leaching, the metal concentrations with (and without, in parentheses) CA were 1.7 (1.5) giL Cu, 200 (70) ppm Mn, 160 (40) ppm AI, and 6 (3) ppm Co. The enhancement of metal concentrations with chelating reagents such as CA was confirmed by determining the solubil-ity of several metal ions as functions of pH and chelating reagent con-centration. When ferric ions became insoluble at pH values above 3, the concentrations of other ions also decreased. The addition of che-lating reagents kept iron, as well as the other dissolved metals, in solution even at pH values as high as 5. Citric acid was a more effective chelating reagent than gluconic acid, oxalic acid, or sodium lignin sulfonate.

An experimental study was undertaken to evaluate the feasibility of a selective chloridizing roasting pre?treatment process for the elimination of impurities from zinc feed?stocks prior to recovering zinc by conventional unit operations. In this investigation, a number of chemistries that might serve as a basis for such a pre? treatment process were examined. A variety of chloridizing agents were admixed with EAF dust to promote the selective removal of lead and cadmium by the formation of volatile metal chlorides, he results of the experimentation firmly establish that selective chloridizing roasting is a technically feasible means of eliminating lead and cadmium from EAF dust.
