Our industry has developed to the skilled, experienced and productive industry that we now enjoy as a result of the visions of great engineers throughout history, but, in particular for their visions in the last 1 centuries. Unfortunately for our forefathers, the technology lagged so far behind that these exceptional visions could not be realized for decades, sometimes for a century. All that has changed in recent time and many bold and visionary projects can now be constructed and operated because of dramatic advances in technology. Before, say, 1950, tunnel technology developed very slowly. However, technology is now developing at such a fast rate that planners and decision makers are challenged to stay ahead. Moreover, new technology will develop during the lifetime of any project that can dramatically improve under-ground space projects. One of the best examples of this technological advancement is that of closed-face TBMs which now make tunneling feasible in previously impossible ground conditions. Since it usually takes a decade or more to plan, overcome environmental and political issues, construct, and put into service major projects, planners and designers are challenged by the changes in technology that occurs during the long time span of planning and construction. This is particularly true of large infrastructure projects such as transportation, water and wastewater systems and other major underground schemes. Also, since the serviceable life of many of these tunnels is often over one century, planners must consider not only lessons learned from the past but also what new concepts and innovations may develop over an extremely long time. These and other issues create a great challenge to planners and illustrate the great importance of careful but creative vision and flexibility during planning of long-term tunnel and underground space projects.

This is a paper demonstrating the steps taken to combine multiple types of piles for a single site to maximize the benefits and characteristics of each method. We intend to discuss the use of grouted displacement piles in lieu of traditional pile types that were specified on an individual project. We will show how implementing this alternate pile type can both supplement and replace the originally specified pile to increase efficiency and lower costs. We will demonstrate a reduction in spoils, vibration, crew hours, and equipment size while employing methods to overcome unforeseen ground conditions.

The sulphur shortage that has occurred in the past two years has directed attention more and more toward sour natural gas reserves, Wellhead values of sour gas vary widely depending upon the acid gas composition, location, market conditions, and necessary processing charges. Preparation of a saleable residue gas is considerably more involved and expensive than that normally encountered in treating a sweet gas. Recent revisions in sales gas specifications have increased capital costs and processing charges. The presence of hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide in a natural gas contributes to shrinkage factors that may approach 50%. Fuel required by the gas sweetening process and sulphur slant tail gas incineration also contributes to a further reduction in the volume of residue gas available for sale. The additional processing facilities involving gas sweetening, mercaptan removal, expanded utilities, sulphur recovery and sulphur handling, all demand additional operating and maintenance staff. A favorable sulphur market under certain conditions may justify the processing of sour gas whereby sulphur is either a by-product or a co-product, Five typical cases involving different compositions of sour gas are presented for evaluation. Capital costs, operating problems, and operating costs are presented in detail for full economic evaluation

IN addition to its base-metal and coal mining operations, the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company has, for the past quarter century, been one of the few large American mining companies interested in dredging. Its activities in this field are confined to gold, and to Alaska, but it is the largest operator in that territory, with twelve huge dredges available to work during the summer on the frozen ancient beach sands at Nome and the gravels of Fairbanks. These operations will be described separately.

Ferritas de níquel-zinco são materiais cerâmicos ferrimagnéticos com estrutura cristalina cúbica do tipo espinélio, pertencente ao grupo espacial Fd3m, sendo uma solução sólida de composição NiO, ZnO e Fe2O3. O método de polimerização de complexos tem enorme potencial para obtenção de cerâmicas magnéticas, por se tratar de um processo simples, que se origina a partir de materiais com elevado grau de pureza, o que leva à obtenção de pós com elevada homogeneidade química e elevada área superficial. Este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar as características estruturais e morfológicas das ferritas Ni0,25Zn0,75Fe2O4 e NiFe2O4 obtidas através do método polimerização de complexos. A solução foi submetida a uma temperatura final de 120°C até a formação da resina, pirolisada a uma temperatura de 350°C durante 2 horas e calcinada a 500°C durante 2 horas. Os pós resultantes foram caracterizados por difração de raios X (DRX), análises térmicas (TG/ DSC) e microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Os resultados do DRX das duas composições apresentaram formação de fase majoritária ferrita. Os resultados das micrografias obtidas por MEV mostraram a formação de partículas aglomeradas com placas longitudinais para ambas composições, sendo características microestruturais importantes para aplicação magnética. O método de polimerização de complexos se apresentou como um método promissor para obtenção de pós cerâmicos de ferrita de níquel e níquel-zinco para aplicação magnética.

Building off the enthusiasm generated by Credit Suisse First Boston on the potential benefits of an industry-wide effort to market gold jewellery, a group of gold producers, led by Randall Oliphant, CEO of Barrick Gold, decides to investigate the long -term impact of launching a significant marketing initiative to stimulate demand for gold jewellery. The group establishes an international Steering Committee representing producers of differing sizes, members and non-members of the World Gold Council. This Committee comprises representatives from AngloGold, Barrick, Gympie Gold, Kinross, Randgold, and Sons of Gwalia and is supported by the Australian Gold Council, the Gold and Silver Institute, and CSFB. The Steering Committee hires McKinsey to assist it by conducting an independent review of whether investment in a large-scale marketing initiative for gold jewellery would be effective in increasing demand for gold, and ultimately of significant economic benefit of the gold industry. Based on McKinsey?s review* and its own discussions with key stakeholders across the industry, the Steering Committee strongly believes the case for marketing is compelling and sufficiently proven to persuade the industry to undertake a major initiative over the next few years. The Steering Committee, supported by McKinsey, conducts briefings with a range of gold producers to share its findings and to understand producers? perspectives on an industry-funded marketing campaign. "Hecla Limited’s No. 4 Shaft at the Lucky Friday Mine is the largest capital expenditure in the corporation’s 128-year history and is considered the deepest shaft in the United States. This paper will discuss the project’s history and lessons learned from the initial conceptual design work in 2007 through project commissioning in 2017. Change management was key for the owner, contractors, and vendors in delivering the operational and organizational success on the project. The No. 4 Shaft has extended the life of the Lucky Friday Mine by 21 years to 2039. INTRODUCTION The Lucky Friday Mine of Hecla Mining Company (Figure 1) is the oldest active (77 years) and deepest mine in the Coeur d’Alene mining district, producing approximately 725 tonnes (800 tons) per day from narrow, vertical, silver, lead, and zinc veins. Primary access into the mine is via the Silver Shaft, a 5.5-m (18-ft) diameter, concrete lined shaft sunk to an original depth of 1,890-m (6,200-ft). Current production is from the Gold Hunter vein system, approximately 1,525-m (5,000-ft) northwest of the Silver Shaft.Cut and fill stoping is currently employed at depths to 2.3 km (7,500 ft) below ground surface, making it one of the deepest mines in the western hemisphere. No. 4 Shaft is a 5.5-metre (18-foot) diameter, concrete lined circular shaft, constructed as a 1.2 km (3,860 feet) deep winze in the Lucky Friday Mine. The 2.4 m (8 ft.) diameter, double drum, double clutch, Siemag hoist and associated headworks are situated at the 4760 level, top station at 4940 and shaft stations at 5900, 6500, 6580, 7500, 7580, 8300, 8380, 8500, and 8620. Shaft stations reference depth below Silver Shaft top station. The 4 Shaft was designed, constructed and commissioned over ten years, between 2007 and 2017. Basic design work was completed by Nordmin Engineering, followed by detailed design completed by Cementation Canada. Shaft construction was awarded to Cementation USA and lateral development was initiated in early 2008. Over the course of the next nine years, the project was suspended and restarted twice, dealt with the loss of a miner, added scope including shaft depth and mine infrastructure facilities, experienced squeezing ground that required liner replacement, changed excavation section, and dealt with a final alignment that was not within design requirement for verticality. Hecla and Cementation were successful in delivering a facility that provides fully functional access from collar at 4940 level to shaft bottom at the 8620 level. Two active mining levels below the collar, 5900 and 6500 are accessed. In addition, the shaft provides access to the future mining level at 7500, skip loading facility at 7580 level, station and loading pocket cutouts at 8300 and 8380 levels, spill pocket at 8500 level, and shaft bottom pumping facility at 8620 level (Figure 2)."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the conversion of nonmagnetic iron minerals to magnetic form through reduction Toasting operations. The primary objective was to obtain a concentrate that could be used as a direct shipping material for blast furnace consumption. Crude iron materials from the Steep Rock Lakes, Ontario, area were prepared into a blend of 8 parts siliceous ore, 3 parts pyritic ore, and 1 part tailings. Experimental work included laboratory reduction roasting tests, two continuous 10-day campaigns, and one 12-hour test all in a 34-inch by 36¬-foot rotary kiln. The objective of the project was achieved in producing an iron concentrate containing about 66 percent iron with over 90 percent iron recovery. Desirable operating conditions were developed in the kiln but optimum process variables were not completely established.

"The Syama Gold Mine, located in southern Mali, was established in 1990 by Broken Hill Propriety Limited (BHP). The operation began treating oxide, and in 1994 it transitioned to processing hard and refractory ore based on ‘whole-of-ore’ roasting. In 1996, BHP was succeeded by Randgold Resources and the operation ran until 2001, when it was placed into care and maintenance.The Syama ore is classified as a double refractory ore with pyrite occluding the fine grained gold present in the ore and high levels of organic carbon presenting a challenge in terms of preg-robbing behaviour. The ore is extremely competent and this combination of metallurgical features was the main source of metallurgical problems encountered by the previous owners.Resolute Mining Limited (RML) acquired the Syama project in 2004. Following a feasibility study and the development of a revised processing flow sheet the plant was recommissioned in 2008 using a combination of old and new equipment. The revised flow sheet enabled primary sulfide ore to be treated by flotation and roasting of the concentrate to produce a calcine suitable for conventional carbon-in-leach (CIL) processing.Commissioning and ramp up of the plant was a troubled process, with monthly gold production being as low as 3000 oz in 2010. Poor availability of equipment and lower-than-forecast recoveries were the primary contributors.During the last five years, RML has utilised a systematic approach to improve production, focusing on mechanical reliability, metallurgical recovery and process bottlenecks. Modifications to the circuit have been as a result of both innovation and the application of technological improvements. Improvements have been made to the flotation, roasting and CIL circuits and RML has introduced a deslime circuit to treat flotation concentrate, in addition to the very successful commissioning of a new 1 Mt/a oxide circuit in December 2014. These changes have resulted in gold production increasing to more than 20 000 oz per month in 2015.This paper presents the processes, change implementation and outcomes of the modifications made to the sulfide circuit to address the availability and recovery problems.Apart from the expansion of an existing, world-class deposit and discovery of new resources, future improvements on the path to a class-leading gold mine include the continued reduction of the unit cash cost, increase in overall sulfide circuit gold recovery, increased throughput through continued innovation and consistency in the plant’s operation.Citation:Sinclair, R, Hunter, I and Landwehr, D, 2016. "In Chile, the evaluation to reprocess tailings for elements other than the traditional Cu, Mo, Au, and Ag, as well as projects to implement long-term monitoring of mining residue sites are key elements of the government’s roadmap laid out for the mining industry for the next two decades. Characterization routines for tailings and mining residues in general have to be adapted from traditional ore and gangue mineral and micro-chemical studies. This contribution summarizes key aspects for the regional mining industry for a basic characterization of tailings with emphasis on small- to medium-size operations with limited in-house facilities and funds to carry out extensive characterization programs. The oldest tailings in Chile were deposited almost a century ago; this fact gives importance to the recovery of past ore /gangue feed information, process circuits and changes (e.g. acid to alkaline flotation), process water provenance and recovery, meteorological registers, and routines of filling a tailings impoundment. Basic characterization should include X-ray fluorescence spectrometry combined with laser diffraction (LD) granulometry followed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (OM) and automated mineral analysis (AMA) on a reduced set of samples identified by hierarchical cluster analysis. For this detailed stage, only coarse tailings are recommended for direct a study by microscopy and automated mineralogy (P80 >100 µm); for fine tailings (P80 ~30 µm) a combination of XRD and deposit type adapted sequential extraction are more informative options. In particular, for XRD of clay phases, losses of crystallinity may result in deviation of spectra from standard reference phases due to prolonged storage. To monitor surface alteration, scanning electron microscopy can be complemented by Raman spectroscopy to detect residual reagents on mineral surfaces. For reactivity modeling BET measurements are essential."

Flotation reagent research focuses not only on improving flotation grade and recovery, but also on producing reagents robust enough to cope with changes. A group of recently developed co-collectors, activators, depressants and frothers are described together with a summary of results measured on base metal sulphide ores.

This paper, describing the concentrator practice of the Moctezuma Copper Co., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The Nacozari concentrator of the Moctezuma Copper Co. (the Mexican subsidiary of the Phelps Dodge Corporation) is located about 75 miles south of Douglas, Ariz., in the Moctezuma District of the State of Sonora. Nacozari is the southern terminus of the Nacozari Railroad, ever which all concentrate is transported to Douglas for smelting.

Deformation processing of rapidly solidified powder alloys presents a technical challenge different in several ways from the processing of ingot based alloys. The metastable phases formed during planar flow casting of aluminum alloy 8009 (FVS0812) must be safe-guarded from high temperature excursions during processing to avoid decomposition; this restriction prohibits liquid phase sintering of particles during consolidation. The development of strong particle-particle adhesion, therefore, relies on the imposition of very large strains during forming operations to insure sufficient mechanical meshing of the aluminum particles and break-up of prior particle oxide boundaries. These strains are generally much greater than those required for metallurgical transformations in ingot based alloys. In an attempt to quantify the deformation required to improve interparticle bonding, the finite element method (FEM) was employed. Preliminary results which predict the metal flow and strain distribution in several workpiece configurations are discussed. These predictions are then correlated to measurements made on experimental subscale forgings. Lastly, experimentally measured quantities which reflect the degree of interparticle bondingg are related back to FEM model predictions.

Under contract (H0232044) to the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Mechanical Technology Incorporated made an experimental investigation of the feasibility of measuring the load in roof bolts using a magnetostrictive sensor. The program was aimed at developing an inexpensive, moderately accurate, load-sensing element suitable for permanent installation and use underground. A combination of a cylindrical load-carrying sleeve under the bolt head and 3 removable circular multipole inductive sensor around the sleeve was tested. Program tasks included: design and fabrication of several sensors; design and manufacture of a large number of experimental sleeves; definition of electronic instrumentation specifications; design and manufacture of electronic sensor readout; and evaluation and testing of many sensor-sleeve combinations. Sleeves of different materials, various lengths, diameters and areas - with and without various nickel coatings -were combined with several experimental inductive sensors that were operated over a wide range of carrier frequencies.

"The 13.2 m (43 ft) external diameter, double deck Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing is one of the most challenging underwater tunnel projects in the world. Subjected to 11 bars of hydrostatic pressure, variable geology, and being in a very active seismic area, the execution of the project required innovative solutions, sophisticated construction techniques and prudent risk management approach. The 5 km (3.1 mile) tunnel consists of a 3.4-km (2.2-mile) tunnel boring machine- (TBM) bored tunnel, 1 km (0.62 mile) twin NATM tunnels and cut-and-cover sections. The project is being delivered in a build-operate-transfer (BOT) contract in a public-private partnership. The technical challenges, coupled with financial and commercial risks required the implementation of sophisticated risk management tactics including the provision of independent design verification. The project was opened to traffic on December 20, 2016, four months ahead of schedule.. This article presents the technical challenges of the project from the design, construction, and risk management aspects..Project backgroundThe $1.245 billion Istanbul Strait Road Tunnel Crossing project, dubbed the Eurasia Tunnel, is one of several major infrastructure projects being implemented in the Republic of Turkey in a public-private partnership approach. The project provides a direct and easy connection between the Anatolian (Asian) side of Istanbul and the heart of its historical district on the European side across the Bosphorus Strait which connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara. The project improves connections to a wide network of motorways on both sides, increase capacity across the Bosphorus by 100,000 vehicles a day, reduces congestion and saves motorists an average of 45 minutes of commuting time in each direction bringing significant economic benefits to the city and the region. It eases traffic across the strait, reduces congestion, decreases pollutants and emission while maintaining Bosphorus. It is the most complex part of the project with the greatest challenges and risks. Part 2 is 5.4 km (3.6 miles) long consisting of 3.4 km (2.2 miles) of 13.2 m ( 43.3 ft) external diameter TBM bored tunnel under the Bosphorus Strait, 1-km (0.62-miles) of twin NATM tunnels on the Asian side, cut-and-cover transition boxes in the Asian and the European sides and depressed approaches on both sides. In addition, this segment includes the toll plazas, ventilation buildings, and the tunnel control and maintenance facilities."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the concentration and distribution of precious metals in the various fractions produced from mechanical processing of obsolete military electronic scrap. Whole avionic units, printed circuit cards, and electrical connectors were processed and analyzed. Materials recovered included baghouse lights, wire bundles, mag-netics, and metal concentrates from eddy-current and high-tension sepa-ration. Higher value fractions were processed by a commercial toll refiner for recovery of gold and silver. Lower value fractions were analyzed by the Bureau. Three fractions, the lights, wire bundles, and metallics from high-tension separation, contained most of the precious metals. Depending on the type of scrap feed, these fractions represented 34 to 60 pct of the original sample weight. Collectively, they represented 68 to 97 pct and 75 to 98 pct of the contained gold and silver, respectively.

It is vitally important to any tunnel project to have an accurate and reliable survey control network inside the tunnel for layouts, as-built surveys, and to provide guidance to the tunnel boring machine (TBM). However, the concepts and methodology to provide such a survey network are sometimes not well understood. For example, the first anticipated survey task that takes place during the bidding process is often ignored, which is to provide a comprehensive survey network preanalysis for the surface network and tunnel traverse based on survey statistics that will be used to make informed decisions on the survey requirements and methodology. Instead, these steps are often only vaguely based on previous results and prior tunneling experience. But each tunnel is different, and a solution that worked for one tunnel project might be unsuitable for another. The purpose of this paper is to provide tunnel project engineers, managers and surveyors with the general concepts for tunnel survey methodologies and examines several statistical tools for a basic horizontal and vertical tunnel survey preanalysis. These survey statistics tools provide useful estimates of the expected lateral and vertical tunnel traverse accuracies, but are not a replacement for a comprehensive tunnel network preanalysis. The proposed formulas do not take centering errors into account, are using average distances for each traverse leg, and assume that the survey data is free of outliers in the measurements. It is very important that the estimated instrument accuracy is based on true values that are reflective of measurement precisions that are actually achievable inside the tunnel to provide accurate results.

Thermo Fisher Scientific is the worldÆs leading supplier of analysers for laboratories and process industries. The companyÆs X-ray fluorescence (XRF)-based slurry immersion probes were originally developed by the acquired Amdel Instrumentation. These analysers have found limited application within wet beneficiation plants for measurement of iron. The recent trend of renewed efforts to maximise recovery from existing resources and lower costs has increased industry interest in online analysis. In the mid-1990s the company developed online analysers (the light element slurry analyser û LESA) for slurry applications using the prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) method. The company has successfully installed LESA for the direct measurement of lighter impurity elements in Brazilian plants using flotation for rejection of silica. A case study is presented. The PGNAA technique has the unique ability to provide elemental analysis of bulk materials on a conveyor belt. The company released its eighth generation cross belt Omni analyser using PGNAA in 2007. Results from a recent project with sinter are presented. The Niton range of hand-held XRF analysers is also supplied by Thermo Fisher Scientific. These handy devices are finding widespread use in the mining industry to provide quick and easy analyses in exploration settings. In contrast to PGNAA this is a surface technique. A prototype for light element analysis is being tested for iron ore.

For every single BOF heat, the steelmaker must control the refining operation in order to satisfy at turndown the following conditions : - to reach the correct steel analysis (C, S, P, ...) in the shortest time possible, i.e. without reblow; - to maintain the temperature of the metal in a narrow range; - to produce the optimum steel weight. It is obvious that during refining limited time and scarce information are available and only very few corrective actions can be taken. For this reason, it is of the greatest importance to facilitate the control of the BOF process by taking adequate measures before and during charging of the converter. These are : - the availability of accurate and reliable equipments for the classical measurements, 5.e. weights, temperatures, flow-rates, analyses, etc... - the operation of an optimal charge calculation model which takes into account all information concerning the preceeding heats and the charged materials.
