The ability to detect and quantify ground movements in underground mine workings is of the utmost importance to the safety of miners and continuity of operations. Rib sloughage is one of the most common forms of underground deformation. Remote sensing techniques, such as laser scanning, can be used to quantify this rib sloughage, by recording precise, timelapse point clouds of mine workings. In order to determine sloughage volumes and locations, two sets of laser scans were performed 42 days apart at a working section of an underground limestone mine. During this period, significant sloughing and scaling occurred, allowing for differentiation between the initial and final point clouds. Volumetric changes of 2.3-2.6 m3 were detected on rib faces during the time-lapse study. In addition, displacement in the mine roof was, as expected, not detected, suggesting well surveyed scans and an appropriate scan resolution.

The decision making check-list and hierarchy of information for process and plant design is generally wide-ranging and complex. The nature of grades, mineralisation and ore types in an ore body, its mine development sequence, and the body of results from metallurgical and physical test work present complex and competing influences on flowsheet development, values for design, equipment selection, plant efficiencies and operating strategy. The challenge is how to manage all these variables, to understand their impacts on performance, and how best to provide a cost-effective plant design and robust process that meets daily/weekly/monthly operating objectives. Throughput, production and grade or product specifications need to be met. The ore body is not average; its range of metallurgical and physical characteristics may be moderately to highly variable. This paper assesses some of the key competing influences and conflicting issues in design and equipment selection, and their effect on production and performance expectations.

Paradoxical is the word. The coal industry, despite reach- ing a 22-year high in production (590 million tons), has been tagged as having its back to the wall vis-a-vis its valiant attempts to quench the nation's still unabated craving for coal. What must be even more reassuring to the industry, infected once with rumors of a uranium takeover, is a nation's almost insatiable appetite for electricity. Between 1967 and the summer of 1970, utility stockpiles were being gobbled up, diminishing to 79% of the January 1968 level.

Empresa Nacional de Minería (ENAMI) is dedicated to the promotion of small and mid scale Chilean mining industry. Paipote, ENAMI Copper Smelter, processes a variety of mineral products as the result of this promotion. The mineral products characterize a wide variation of copper, iron, sulfur and precious metals content as well as the significant dispersion in the content of impurities, such as arsenic, antimony and bismuth. The Smelter Modernization Program, initiated in1997, introduced a series of technological and operational changes. The development of operational planning and control strategies was necessary to optimize the blending of a wide variety of concentrates and the control of metallurgical processes in order to ensure the stable operation, fulfillment of environmental regulations and the quality of produced copper anodes. A permanent optimization process carried out in the last decade led to the permanent increase of the smelting capacity and the production of anodes and sulfuric acid. Additionally, introduced improvements affected the smelter efficiency and metallurgical recovery, demonstrating the possibilities of the optimization of a small smelting facility reflected in good metallurgical and economic results. This paper presents the smelter evolution, introduced technological and process control changes as well as incorporated new reactors and equipment as a continuous process of optimization.

In both laboratory flotation experiments and from analysing the composition of the lead concentrate at the Boliden Tara lead-zinc mine in Ireland, it has been found that F-250 may replace cyanide as a pyrite depressant. Replacement or reduction of the cyanide consumption is highly desirable from a safety perspective given the toxicity of cyanide. Scrutiny of results from the plant trial indicate that F-250 is less efficient as a cyanide depressant when the flotation feed contains high levels of pyrite. Statistical analysis of the results does not capture this trend, illustrating a need to collect more data at higher pyrite ore levels. A recent model proposed for biopolymer-induced pyrite depression is reviewed and discussed next to the suggested mechanism for pyrite depression via cyanide. Review of the interactions causing pyrite depression point to different manners in achieving depression. In light of the less efficient F-250 pyrite depression at high pyrite levels, it is speculated if the two depressants may act synergistically at high levels of pyrite in the feed. Esso-BHP have installed a Production Supervisory Control System that is presently controlling the offshore oil and gas facilities on the Barracouta and Marlin platforms from an onshore master station. This control is achieved with a computerized master station onshore which uses a UHF radio system for telemetry and control. The system is designed to control, monitor, and gather data from a large number of oil and gas production platforms and has flexability to handle future variations in operating conditions. Iron ore mines of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) have to comply with strict chemical composition norms laid down for iron ore lumps supplied to its steel plants. This requires a careful planning of the overall ore excavation operation. In general terms, the problem can be stated as: Given the chemical composition of ore for all excavation sites, excavation capacity of each shovel, distance of each excavation site from the crushing plant and the number of dumpers available for transport of the ore, find out the percentage of ore to be excavated from each excavation site such that the production rate is maximized and the chemical composition norm is satisfied to the best possible extent. This paper presents an approach to solve this problem using Branch and Bound method. The specification for r.o.m. quality has been modified by incorporating a new parameter, ?Al2O3 / SiO2? ratio, which has a significant effect on the performance of iron blast furnace.

Many organizations are realizing that continual improvement in health and safety relies on addressing the potential for various forms of human error. Of these, violations are often the most frequent form associated with accidents. These occur when an individual, or individuals, deliberately contravenes established and known safety rules. They have been associated with up to 90% of accidents and incidents in some industries and yet rarely receive the systematic attention they deserve in the promotion of safety. This paper presents underlying motives which cause violations. These can vary significantly from mine to mine and from job to job. Managers need some measure of attitudes to determine the underlying motives behind violations if they are to determine effective strategies for promoting safe behaviour. Questionnaires form the starting point to address attitudes and the motives behind rule violations. The choice of the most suitable questionnaire, however, will vary from organization to organization. Guidelines on the choice of questionnaire are offered.

All persons and communities that have experienced strong-motion earthquakes are convinced of the importance and complexity of earthquake problems thatmust be solved in order to reduce the personal hazards and property losses to a reasonable minimum. It is also clear that absolute elimination of all risks is impossible. Reduction of existing hazards and precautionary measures which will minimize chances for disaster can be accomplished by realistic appraisal of the effects of recent earth- quakes on modern structures and installations. Localities that have reason to expect so-called strong- motion earthquakes can anticipate these effects by taking appropriate steps. Valid earthquake information can only be obtained from earthquakes. Each earthquake contributes to the body of knowledge by additional facts and by clarification of previous observations. Rational interpretation of the data followed by practical application of the conclusions can contribute greatly to the safety of persons and property. The general public expects the architectural and engineering profession to accept this obligation and render this service. Most earthquake hazards are man-made and arise from the imperfections of the works of man and his failure to anticipate the consequences when the natural characteristics of his environment are ignored. If it is not given to man to prevent such natural phenomena as earthquakes, it is sometimes within his power to control their destructive effects and to reduce to a minimum the toll of life and human suffering.

Surface mining refers to the process of removing the material (over- burden) overlying a coal seam and exposing the coal so that it can be loaded out and conveyed by trucks or other methods to the preparation plant or other facility. Surface mining has not always been important in the coal industry. In the early 1900s, almost all of the coal mined in the United States was mined by underground methods. In 1900, about 192 Mt (212 million st) of bituminous coal were mined and less than 1% was mined by surface methods. The development and use of larger equipment has allowed surface mining to gain prominence throughout the years. Table 1 shows the total production of coal by mining method in the United States for ten-year periods since 1920 and indicates the growth of surface-mined coal production. Surface mining will undoubtedly continue to account for a large percentage of the coal production in the US for many years because: 1) The capacity of surface mining excavators has continued to increase. Today, mining companies are using shovels (see Fig. 1) which are able to move up to 137.6 m3 (180 cu yd) in each bite and draglines (see Fig. 2) which move up to 168.2 m3 (220 cu yd) in each bucketful. 2) Increasing tonnage from the thick western coal seams is being produced by surface mining methods. 3) Surface mining has normally had lower costs and a better safety record than underground mining; 4) Surface mining normally recovers a- much higher percentage of the coal reserve than can be recovered by underground mining. 5) Some coal measures can best be extracted by surface mining [ ] methods because of geologic reasons such as the nature of the roof or bottom, thickness of the seam, multiple bedding, etc.

Moving bed has been widely used in the field of heat and mass transfer and reaction between solid particles and gas. In order to enhance the heat exchange coefficient, there will be tube banks inserted in the moving bed. In the process of drying ammoniates particles or heat recovery from high-temperature particles with moving bed, the particles flow behavior around the tube banks is significant. In this paper, the particles flow behavior around the tube banks is investigated, and all the results can provide guidance for the design and operation of a moving bed.

This paper reviews the growth pattern in bauxite and alumina production, and primary aluminum smelting through 1980. Because the alumina and primary metal are intermediate products of the major integrated aluminum companies, it is not possible to determine their production costs. The costs indicated in this paper are order of magnitude costs based on published figures and the market price of these products. The conclusions in this paper indicate the general pattern of growth in the aluminum industry and are not meant to be a substitute for the feasibility and economic studies that are needed for individual bauxite mining, alumina refining and aluminum smelting projects.

There is active debate and research around the most suitable indicators to assess the sustainability of mining. The most common approach is to report a range of data for a given mine site (or less preferably, a company total), such as inputs, outputs, benefits and potential costs. The most popular protocol in use (and growing rapidly) is the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). However, these measures are numerous and still do not allow a single over-arching indicator to be developed. Other measures, such as known mineral resources over time, do not account for critical challenges such as declining ore grades, increasing wastes and poorer quality ores or more difficult mineralogy. By adopting a thermodynamic approach to sustainability, through the concept of æexergyÆ, it is possible to incorporate into a single measure the effective quality of mineral resources. Exergy involves the assessment of the minimum energy costs involved in producing a mineral resource with a specific chemical composition and concentration from common materials in the environment. The exergy of a mineral resource is evaluated from mineralogic composition, concentration (or ore grade) and, of course, quantity, by multiplying the unit exergies with the tonnes of the resource produced (or consumed). Since exergy is a thermodynamic quantity (ie energy or joules), it is additive across different minerals, such as iron ore to gold to copper or even oil and gas or coal û making it an ideal indicator to assess mineral resource sustainability at the industry scale rather than the individual mine scale. This paper briefly outlines the theoretical basis for exergy, and then presents a range of commodity case studies showing the application of exergy to the Australian mining industry. Overall, the usefulness of exergy is clearly demonstrated for use as a broad indicator of the sustainability of mineral resources at the national or even global scale.

McArthur River Operation is the world?s largest high grade uranium deposit and is located in Northern Saskatchewan. McArthur River came into production in December 1999 with a number of innovative technologies to allow for mining of a high grade uranium deposit in challenging geotechnical and hydrological conditions. The raisebore mining method has been supplemented by the continued development of a boxhole mining technique to allow for mining of mineralization that cannot be accessed with a drill chamber from above. An innovative freeze wall re-design ? a cathedral freeze wall, was implemented in 2009 to allow for top access of a new orebody in the unconformity area of the Athabasca Sandstone. This paper highlights some of the ongoing improvements to the mining method and the innovative risk mitigation applied to manage the extraction of this challenging orebody.

ANOTHER chapter in the history of Mother Lode mining is being written by operations in the Old Eureka mine near Sutter Creek, Amador County, California. During a two-year period (1938-1939), 85,517 tons of ore averaging 0.62 oz. gold per ton were mined and milled, as compared to the production of approximately 210,000 tons of 0.315-oz. gold ore during the preceding seven years. This is a repetition of mining history in the Mother Lode, where a period of prosperity has followed a long period of lean production. The location of this new ore in the hitherto unproductive hanging-wall greenstones and its mining and geological developments are most interesting. HISTORY OF THE OLD EUREKA MINE The Old Eureka mine, also known as the Hayward, Eureka, Hetty Green and Amador Consolidated, is in the most productive 10-mile length of the 120-mile long Mother Lode of California. The mine was first opened in 1852 with operations more or less continuous for the next 30 years. Production during this period amounted to $12,000,000 from an ore shoot 500 ft. long, which bottomed 1700 ft. below the surface. The shaft was continued as a prospect to 2065 ft. on the incline, where work was stopped in 1881. The mine was sold in 1916 by Hetty Green and the shaft deepened to the 3500-ft. level (3212 ft. vertically) by the new owners. Drifts were run on the 1700, 2100, 3000 and 3500-ft. levels, together with approximately 1500 ft. of crosscuts. No ore was found and work was abandoned in 1921. The present owners, the Central Eureka Mining Co., purchased the mine in 1924 after threatened litigation over rights to the rich ore shoot being mined from the lower levels of the Central Eureka mine on the south. Rehabilitation of the shaft commenced in 1926 and in 1930 mining on the old 2100-ft. level was started. While efforts of the previous owners had been directed for the most part toward the area south of the Old Eureka shaft and adjacent to the productive Central Eureka mine, the present owners started drifting northward on the old 2100-ft. level. Two instruments have been constructed that extend microseismic data collection and processing capability for Bureau of Mines research in rock burst, coal bounce and outburst, and roof fall monitoring. The first instrument is a 13-channel tape-triggering system. This system allows better utilization of instrumentation tape recorders by collecting data digitally, turning the tape on only when valid data are present, and increasing the dynamic range of the recorder by using digital data. A digital-to-analog converter is used to provide analog output of the recorded digital data. The instrument records a much larger time slice of transient events than do current commercial devices. The second instrument is a microseismic energy measurement device. This device uses recent developments In integrated circuits to overcome the dynamic range and accuracy limitations of previous instruments. The analog signal is converted to a digital one, and then high-speed multiplication techniques are used to square the amplitude value in real time and integrate it.

The mining industry has much potential for automation. A great deal of work has been done on this subject and is still ongoing. With automation comes the possibility for optimization, because more information is available and actions can be repeated with more accuracy. This paper looks at possible solutions to the problem of optimizing the autonomous vehicle dispatch system in an underground mine. Possible optimization strategies are evaluated using a simulated environment. The majority of the results indicate that improvements on current methods are possible. After a short theoretical comparison of various typical large bell tops with the bell-less top for segregation and other ,ffects on the material flowing through the equipment proper, a comparative analysis between classical and the new burdening in the furnace is given, showing the theoretical effects of distribution and segregation on the horizontal pressure variations, temperature values and gas composition in the stack. Then some typical theoretical charging patterns of the bell-less top for wall and centre temperature adjusting, pressure drop corrections, dissymmetric local action for blow-in and scaffolding are described. Finally the available practical results on furnaces equipped with the bell-less top are compared with the theoretical statements made before and conclusions indicate that the new approach to burdening blast furnaces is a real improvement.

A classification of flotation processes carried out in concentrated electrolyte solutions, e.g., seawater, is proposed using the most obvious features of these processes: low or high content of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions, pulp ionic strength, and pH. The first distinguishable group is the processes carried out in NaCl/KCl solutions, about 0.5 M in the case of salt flotation of inherently hydrophobic minerals, and at concentrations about 10 times higher in the flotation of potash ores. In the flotation of sulfide ores, such as nickel or copper ores, with xanthate-like collectors, the xanthate collector is apparently not affected by pulp ionic strength and only adjustment of frother may be required. Content of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions in seawater is the main difference between such systems and fresh water. The presence of these metallic ions can adversely affect flotation in the pH ranges over which these ions hydrolyse. The successful flotation of Cu-Mo ores typically requires depression of pyrite at high pH values achieved with the use of lime. However, in seawater, flotation of Cu-Mo ores requires removal of the hydrolysis products of the Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions or the use of a pyrite depressant that can be effective over the pH ranges that are much below the pH of hydrolysis. Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions also affect flotation of phosphate ores with fatty acids. In this case, the depression mechanism is not caused by precipitating magnesium hydroxides on the mineral surface but by precipitation of collector insoluble salts, and the same ions are responsible for depression in both cases. In the seawater flotation of Cu-Mo sulfide ores and phosphate ores, the practical solution involves either removal of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions prior to the flotation or complexation with other reagents.
