The connexion between the Kent and the Continental coalfields on the one hand and the western British coalfields on the other has been for many years a controversial subject between geologists. These coalfields were once considered as detached portions of a former extensive sheet of Carboniferous deposits, but some geologists seem now to incline to the view that they were never connected. The writer hopes to show that the problem is one of the most difficult of geological investigations; that we are still far from a perfect solution; and that both of the extreme theories must be set aside. The physiography of NW Europe during the Carboniferous, with its various generations of earlier folds, is outlined and the features of the Lower and Upper Carboniferous anticlines and synclines discussed, followed by consideration of the denudation of the coalfields and local descriptions of the Malvernian range and Usk anticline, the Pennine chain, the Shropshire coalfield and the Kent coalfield. An attempt is made to trace the transverse Midland anticlines southwards and to deal with the intervening syncline: for example, if the dissymmetrical profile of the Pennine Chain holds good at its southern end then the syncline west of the chain must be deeper than the syncline east of it (the Kent syncline), and in this syncline the deepest part must be at its south-eastern corner, and therefore south of the diagonal ridge. T here is some actual evidence of the existence of Coal-Measures in this syncline, as the results of the Batsford and Burford borings prove. The hypothetical character of most of the conclusions will prove, beyond any doubt, how fa r geologists still are from a perfect settlement of this problem, and how much this settlement is dependent on the more or less advanced state of knowledge regarding all the geological features of these coalfields and of the surrounding country

Roof failures in underground coal mines are related to the lithology and geologic structure of the roof. There are two distinct suites of roof rock above the Herrin (No. 6) Coal in Illinois, and each has distinctive patterns of structure and roof failure. In black shale-limestone roof areas, roof instability is correlated with thinning of limestone beds and presence of faults and clay dikes. In gray shale roof regions, the prime roof hazards are posed by rolls, shear bodies, and presence of coal or carbonaceous partings in the roof. Most structural features examined are believed to have formed during early stages of sediment diagenesis and compaction. Structural trends and lithologic patterns are strongly interdependent for this reason. In many cases geologic patterns are so complex and locally variable that prediction of roof stability far in advance of mining is difficult. The need for greater flexibility in roof control planning is apparent.

CONSIPERABLE information on the industrial or non-metallic mineral resources of British Columbia has been published. For a general resume of the subject, reference may be made to a paper presented by A. M. Richmond before the Annual General Meeting of the Institute in 1935 (1). To avoid duplication, the present paper is confined to a discussion of the existing industrial mineral industry of the Province and of the factors governing its present and future development. British Columbia's mineral production in 1936 had a value approximately 15 per cent of that for the whole of Canada. Preliminary estimates for 1937 indicate that this proportion has been maintained, although the totals have increased about 25 per cent. The following table presents comparative figures, for the year 1936, illustrating the relative importance of the major divisions of the mineral industry in British Columbia and in Canada as a whole.

In-situ recovery (ISR) is under increased investigation as a viable methodology for the extraction of minerals in ore bodies that may be uneconomic to mine by traditional methods or for resources situated in locations where underground and surface mining operations are not feasible. Although the concept of ISR is relatively new with respect to hard rock applications, it is not a new technology; it has been used successfully in potash and uranium mining and also in heavy oil extraction for years where it has been proven to be both technically and commercially viable. ISR allows for the extraction of metals and minerals without the need to mine large amounts of ore that need to be processed at surface. The ore stays in-situ and only the valuable metals and minerals are produced to surface in a process that produces very little to no waste rock or tailings. This paper aims to discuss the geological conditions that make ISR amenable to an ore body as well as the application of maturing technologies such as advanced directional drilling and the creation of artificial permeability that will help to access deep ore bodies and enhance or create favorable recovery conditions for ISR in the ore body. Recently there has been increased interest in deploying ISR in hard rock applications due to a number of factors: the drive for environmental stewardship is stronger than ever, technological advances in drilling, blasting, and leaching are strengthening ISR economics, and a large inventory of ore bodies exists that are not feasible to mine or extract using conventional open pit or underground mining techniques. ISR allows for the extraction of valuable metals and minerals without the need to mine large amounts of ore that need to be processed at surface. The ore stays in-situ and only the valuable metals and minerals are produced to surface in solution via a recovery process that produces very little to no waste rock or tailings. Where the right conditions exist, the ISR process has a much smaller environmental footprint (Hiam-Galvez, 2018) and potentially much lower capital and operating costs than using conventional mining techniques.

"Previous studies have shown that the floatability of chalcopyrite in seawater at highly alkaline conditions is significantly affected by the presence of clays. The reason is that the species of calcium and magnesium present in seawater under those conditions may act as a bridge between the surfaces of clay and chalcopyrite, generating massive aggregates that then depress. In this context, the objective of this work is to analyze the impact of pretreated seawater with low amount of calcium and magnesium ions on the recovery of a sulphide copper mineral with high kaolinite content as clay. The seawater pre-treatment is done by the addition of sodium hydroxide in a high carbon dioxide environment. The chemical reactions realized under these conditions lead to the formation and precipitation of calcium and magnesium species that are subsequently removed by vacuum filtration. The pre-treated seawater is then used in flotation tests at pH 11 for copper sulphide, where the mineral is synthetically prepared by mixtures of chalcopyrite, kaolinite, and quartz. When comparing the flotation results for different types of water, including seawater and pre-treated seawater, a significant effect is observed: as the seawater hardness decreases, which comprises the calcium and magnesium ions, the recovery of chalcopyrite is increased. However, the effect is markedly enhanced in the presence of kaolinite. Therefore, the results indicate that sodium hydroxide and carbon dioxide are able to remove different species of calcium and magnesium from seawater and could improve the chalcopyrite recovery with high kaolinite content. INTRODUCTIONIn many cases, mineral deposits are found in arid areas with little access to water resources. Water is a fundamental element to carry out the unit operations that achieved the separation of valuable minerals (especially in concentration operations). Seawater has acquired an interesting role in recent years (Cisternas and Moreno, 2014); in fact, it seems to be one of the few viable options to ensure the sustainability of the mining industry in arid zones. At present, there are numerous experiences of industries that use or have used this resource, either by submitting the seawater to a desalination treatment by reverse osmosis or by applying it directly, without desalting. The latter case may involve significant economic benefits (for example, by avoiding the investment of building a desalination plant) and in some cases some operational benefits. A positive aspect is that in general terms the foaming in the saline medium is much more efficient compared to fresh water (Quinn et al., 2014; Castro et al., 2010). Some reports show that the foaming doses required to achieve a certain quality of bubbles are remarkably reduced, reaching exceptional cases such as Xstrata's Raglan concentrator, where it did not even include foaming to carry out the operation. This fact is quite promising, considering that some researchers have stated that controlling the quality of bubbles and foam could float minerals through coarse particles. This would lead to multiple benefits, such as energy savings by avoiding excessive grinding and a lower presence of fine ore that causes major problems in water recovery operations by gravitation (such as thickening) and in tailings management. However, seawater also causes significant challenges in multiple operations (Jeldres et al., 2017, 2016; Castro et al., 2010), as for example in minerals with high clay content (Uribe et al., 2017). In fresh water, the presence of clays minerals in ores is already a major problem in the flotation stages since the operation becomes difficult to be controlled, and operators are commonly forced to increase the consumption of reagents because the collectors are deposited on the clays' surfaces reducing froth stability (Farrokhpay and Bradshaw, 2012). The operations and project environments are very different, but overlap in many areas. The development of mineral processing projects is goal oriented, is schedule focused and is a contractual environment. The operating environment for a mineral processing plant is oriented around longer-term commitments, focused on delivery against budget expectations, and an environment heavily influenced by long-term personal relationships, community relationships, and people issues.Further contrast is evident in the way expenditure is managed. Projects commit large amounts of money quickly to meet schedule-based objectives. Operations manage expenditure to minimise operating costs and are able to, or are forced to delay decisions on large expenditures. However, these two environments need to come together in many ways, ranging from greenfields plant handover to a new operations and maintenance crew, to day to day interaction and management of brownfields projects, often in close proximity.This paper considers the different perspectives people bring to projects and early operations, including the advantages and disadvantages of æoperationsÆ input to a project and models for managing value adding during project development, implementation and debottlenecking.CITATION:Lane, G and Clements, B, 2012. This paper deals with the determination of hydraulic conductivity of the coastal coralline limestone aquifer of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This coastal area has witnessed urban development and establishment of towers which requires deep foundations, excavation and dewatering of huge quantities of unconfined groundwater. It is occupied with successive layers of soft detrital and consolidated massive cavernous coralline limestone of the Quaternary age. These layers are encountered at a depth of 1.5m and extend for more than 100m. Hydraulic conductivity values were obtained by analyzing the pumping tests data under steady and transient state conditions. Hydraulic conductivity values help in selecting the proper and safe dewatering system, as well as determination of discharge rates and quantities of groundwater to be withdrawn. Test results obtained from two surveyed sites showed that the values of hydraulic conductivity are greatly variable. It ranges between 118.1 and 1559.6 m/day at the first site, whereas at the second one it ranges between 94.6 and 350 m/day. These high values are attributed to the cavernous nature of the water-bearing formation. Jeddah city could be divided into three different dewatering zones extending from north to south parallel to the coast line. Well point dewatering system could be applied in the first zone while ditches and sumps are the most suitable dewatering method in the second and third zones. Dewatering using deep wells in such highly permeable formation will require withdrawal of huge quantities of water which will be accompanied by washing out fine sediment filling the cavities in the surrounding areas. This will badly affect the nearby buildings through settlement, crakes and other structural damages. Therefore, construction of grouting plug/blanket with thickness of 3.0 m at a depth of 20.0 m is recommended. This depth will be enough to support the plug against the hydrostatic pressure. Moreover, it is highly recommended to transfer the site into closed box, by using diaphragm walls or secant bored piles.

The results of studies to ameliorate acid mine drainage by retarding the rate of oxidation of pyrite at source are discussed. In the transpassive region, pyrite oxidizes by reactive dissolution, mass transfer through the product layer and diffusion in the bulk solution. One can decrease the rate of pyrite oxidation by inhibiting either oxidation reactions or cathodic reactions. It is demonstrated in this study that some surface active reagents extend the passive region by affecting both the anodic and cathodic processes. The extension to higher potentials occurs by inhibition of the anodic dissolution process whereas to lower cathodic potentials through decrease in the rate of reduction of molecular oxygen and/or ferric ions. To retard the oxidation of pyrite by ferric ions, which is considered to be the dominant oxidant under conditions of acid mine drainage, it would be necessary to restrict mass transfer or promote complexation of ferric ions at the surface. Imidazoline based reagents were found to be most effective in meeting this goal.

IT has been recognized for many years that dis-persed particles have great value in raising the creep resistance of metallic alloys. In fact, some of the most successful high-temperature alloys owe their superiority to this factor above all others. A recent observation by Glen1," indicates that even better high-temperature resistance to deformation results in alloys capable of two successive precipitation reactions. The ramifications of this finding are of great interest. Unfortunately, our understanding of the reasons for such notable improvements has not kept pace with technical developments. In an effort to uncover some of the basic facts governing strengthening by particles, a program was initiated at the Battelle Memorial Institute with the primary goal of comparing creep strengths in single-phase and two-phase (precipitating) alloys. The effects of precipitation from solid solution on the creep properties of alloys are generally such that the resistance to creep is increased. However, if alloys are heat treated to different degrees of hardness before creep testing, it is often found that those possessing the maximum hardness initially do not necessarily have the maximum creep resistance. Depending on the stresses and temperatures involved other structures may prove more desirable. Considerations of the above nature indicate the importance of defining the initial state of the alloy. Here, it was decided to start with quenched single- phase alloys in which precipitation and creep deformation proceed concurrently. Equipment and Experimental Procedures Preparation of the Specimens—Four 25 lb ingots were prepared from 99.999 pct Cu and 99.996 pct Al to compositions of 1, 2, 3, and 4 wt pct Cu. Spec-trographic and chemical analyses are listed in Table I. After heat treatments and intermediate reductions, the alloys were cold rolled to 1/8 in. thick sheet. The final cold reductions amounted to 50, 40, 20, and 10 pct for the 1, 2, 3, and 4 pct Cu alloys, respectively. The specimens for creep testing were machined into tensile flats 7 in. long, 3/4 in. wide (at the shoulders), and 1/8 in. thick. The reduced sections were 1/4 in. wide and 21/2 in. long. After heat treatments at 540°C to an ASTM grain size of 1 1, the specimens were quenched into water at room temperature, then electropolished in a glacial acetic acid and perchloric acid solution. The gage marks were Knoop impressions placed 2 in. apart on the reduced sections. Blanks of 1 x 1 in, were cut from the same sheets for the age hardening runs and were given the same grain size heat treatments. The specimens and blanks were stored in a refrigerator at —40°C until needed for testing. Creep Measurements—Creep tests were conducted in a constant temperature room which was maintained at 26° ±1°C. A split-type, hinged, vertical-tube furnace was mounted on a horizontal track so that the specimen could be enclosed suddenly. The Waterview Tunnel comprises twin 2.4 km long 13.1 m internal diameter three lane road tunnels in Auckland, New Zealand. The City Rail Link (CRL) is a 3.45 km long, 6.24 m internal diameter twin rail tunnel underneath Auckland’s city center. This paper presents an overview of the tunnel geometry, segmental lining congurations, geometric constraints, performance criteria and functional reuirements for the large diameter Waterview Tunnels and smaller diameter CRL tunnels. Other key aspects, which include sustainability, innovations, construction performance and practical aspects are discussed and compared. Lessons learnt from these mega tunnelling projects are also presented.

Infrared sensors will include scanning detectors and positioning sensors. The focus will be on 1, 2, and 4-color wavelength pyrometer systems which allow the accurate measurement of emissivity and, consequently, of the true temperature even in the presence of scale, slag, and fumes. Such sensors are being used in blast furnaces, BOF's, and galvanizing lines. Laser sensors will be presented using different principles of physics, mainly time-of-flight, pulsed infrared lasers for level measurement and dimensional measurement; triangulation lasers for width and thickness measurements; and laser Doppler velocimeters for velocity and length measurements, including mass flow, elongation, and tension control, cut-to-length applications. These sensors and systems are based on state-of-the-art technical developments to improve productivity and quality and reduce maintenance and downtime.

"Hollow bar tiebacks can offer an economical alternative to conventional solid bar and strand tieback systems for use in temporary excavation support construction. However, the limitations associated with the installation of hollow bar tiebacks require special attention during design, construction and load testing to verify conformance with conventional performance and proof testing criteria (PTI, 2014). In particular, providing a reliable free length is complicated by the 10-foot (3-m) -long, segmental, couplingto- coupling nature of the free length sheath in the hollow bar system, and addressing the fully grouted annulus of the bond zone and the free length zone at the end of installation are key concerns. In addition, it is often more convenient to install a greater number of more closely spaced, lower capacity tiebacks with the hollow bar system, compared to conventional tiebacks. This paper examines how these issues were addressed for a project involving a 60-foot (18-m) -deep sheet pile excavation through a highway embankment and a 70-foot-deep sheet pile and soldier pile and lagging excavation through a railroad embankment, both supported by a hybrid system of hollow bar tiebacks and hollow bar soil nails. The project involved approximately 300 tiebacks and 400 soil nails.INTRODUCTIONEngineers Construction, Inc. (ECI), constructed a pair of 32-foot (9.8-m) -wide (clear span), 30-foot (9- m) -high (21 feet (6.4 m) above the stream bed), cast-in-place concrete arch culverts as a design-build project for the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) in East Ryegate, Vermont. The new culverts replaced an existing 8-foot (2.4-m) -wide by 6-foot (1.8-m) -high cast-in-place concrete culvert under US Route 5 (RTE5), and twin, 2-foot (0.6-m) -wide by 5-foot (1.5-m) -high granite block culverts under the Washington County Railroad (WACR) alignment. The culverts convey Manchester Brook eastward, through the embankments for RTE5 and the WACR, on its way to the Connecticut River. The Connecticut River is located approximately 100 feet (30 m) east of the WACR embankment. The existing structures were undersized and backed up water behind the embankments during high flow events; and often trapped debris that flowed down the brook and became clogged. The existing culverts also had cracks and openings that have resulted in the loss of ground into the culverts and the formation of sinkholes in the sides of the embankments. Moreover, the reason for the large cross-sectional dimensions of the culverts was to make them of sufficient size and openness to encourage the migration of fish up the stream to spawn. The culvert through the RTE5 embankment is 144 feet (44 m) long, and the culvert through the WACR embankment is 128 feet (39 m) long, with a 57-foot (17.4-m) -long by 32–foot (9.8- m) -wide by 17-foot (5.2-m) -deep 10 feet (3 m) deep above the stream bed) open channel section between the two culverts. Since the outbreak of the European war, few problems of raw-material supply have commanded more nation-wide attention than potash. It is well known that before the war the domestic production of potash was an insignificant percentage of the imports. The average annual importation of raw potash salts for several years prior to 1914 was slightly over 300,000 net tons, and of other potash manure salts about 700,000 tons. The sudden and almost total cessation of these imports created a unique and stringent situation. Methods of recovering potash from feldspar and other native mineral sources, and reclamation from hitherto waste products, have received a marked impetus. Soaring prices have been a keen incentive to research and industrial development. Although several brief articles concerning the possibilities of potash recovery have appeared in recent trade journals, it still may be a matter of some surprise to the average technical mind that potash might be reclaimed as a profitable byproduct in the manufacture of pig iron. At the present time it may be of special interest to present some data, largely of a technical nature, on this subject. A fairly thorough search of the literature reveals a number of articles concerning salts of the alkali metals in the blast furnace. Many of them deal with the theoretical rôle of alkali cyanides in the furnace. Several discuss the probable effect of the alkalies on the furnace brickwork. Two or three ambitious patents have been granted for reclaiming potash or other products from blast-furnace gas. However, we have heard nothing further as to the practical application of these patents. Little literature of importance has appeared during the last 10 years concerning alkalies in blast-furnace practice, and I have discovered no record whatsoever as to the actual sale or commercial disposal of flue dust for its potash content until this was inaugurated in our plant at Bethlehem. The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions4/ issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous .sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the methods and results of many of the laboratory studies on spontaneous heating of coal published in the last 50 years. It includes a brief description of experimental methods, indices of combustibility, and important contributing factors. Adiabatic calorimetry, isothermal calorimetry, [0], sorption systems, or temperature differential are the most frequently used experimental methods. Indices of combustibility include various heating rates, crossing point temperature, ignition temperature, and CO index. Factors that affect the spontaneous heating of coal include air flow rate, changes in moisture content, particle size, rank, temperature, pyrite content, geological factors, and mining practice. Experimental conditions and results from 20 papers are summarized in an appendix, and the bibliography contains 45 references.

In the overall open pit mine planning process, mining phase design is a strategic driver in guiding and constructing the block extraction sequence and determining the annual net cash flow distribution. Mining phase design should obey some practical constraints, such as ?minimum mining width? and ?flat mining phase bottom?, to allow space for haul road development and truck and shovel access on each bench. However, these practical mining phase design requirements are not taken into account in all first-cut mining phase design methods and post-processing is always required to convert an impractical design to a practical one, resulting in a potentially significant loss of Net Present Value (NPV) relative to the first-cut impractical designs. In this paper, we present a method using a meta-heuristic algorithm ? Simulated Annealing ? to enforce those practical constraints in determining a mineable phase design whilst ensuring minimum NPV loss.

"The Geological Survey of Canada is devoting consider-able effort to finding ways to make airborne radiometric measurements both quantitative and reproducible. Equipment has been designed by Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. to provide high count rates in order to minimize statistical uncertainty, this being essential to justify applying terrain clearance and Compton scattering corrections to the data. Correction factors have been determined experimentally and can be applied automatically. Considerable ground work has been undertaken in parallel with equip-ment development in order to determine field parameters.Two airborne gamma-ray spectrometers are described. One is based on three 5-by 5-inch Nal(Tl) detector crystals and is used in a helicopter; the other employs twelve 9-by 9-inch detectors and is used from a Skyvan aircraft. The former is being used to investigate the range of radiometric response from specific rock types, and for the correlation of ground and air measurements; the latter has completed initial trials and will be commencing experimental surveys during 1969.Results are given to show the comparative sensitivities of the various detector sizes, and operational requirements for a gamma-ray spectrometer survey are discussed briefly."
