Anionic conditioning of phosphate ores prior to fatty acid flotation is a very critical step that determines the eventual selectivity, recovery and hence the economics of the process. However the chemical mechanisms operating during this conditioning step are not established. Several studies have been conducted in the past to determine the mode of interaction of collectors with the phosphate fractions however these have been done on a laboratory scale using pure phosphate minerals. In order to test the relevance of the observed effects to plant practice in this work a comprehensive survey of plant practice was first conducted and then adsorption on flotation feed and francolite were studied under simulated plant conditions. Effects of conditioning energy and water chemistry as well as solids loading and fuel oil were determined. Most importantly, different adsorption mechanisms were found to be dominant under laboratory and plant conditions. In plant water, there was some physisorption of oleic acid on phosphate flotation feed and francolite in addition to chemisorption. However, in distilled water under laboratory conditions only chemisorption was detected. Fuel oil reduced the residual oleic acid in solution after adsorption, which explains the beneficial role of extender in phosphate flotation. The dissolved species in solution arising from the flotation feed or plant processing water are shown to clearly play a major role in determining the adsorption of oleic acid on the substrates. The study also specifically demonstrates the importance of conducting research tests under plant mixing conditions and plant water chemistry for the results to be useful commercially.

THE Eastern Magnetite Industry produced approximately 7,850,000 long tons of crude ore in 1945 from which was obtained approximately 3,650,000 long tons of shipping product or a ratio of 2.10 to 1. Lack of skilled or experienced miners was the greatest handicap. Veterans returning to work improved the underground labor shortage in some localities but as a whole the labor shortage was keenly felt throughout the industry. One cannot now predict what may be accomplished in 1946 but barring major steel strikes a worthwhile improvement can be expected. At the Richard mine of the Richard Ore Co., the shipping product for the year amounted to approximately 124,650 long tons of concentrate and lump ore. Crude-ore production was 160,600 long tons. The average analysis for lump ore was 63 per cent iron and for concentrates 66.05 per cent. The Warren Foundry and Pipe Corp. at their Mt. Hope mine produced 73,000 long tons of lump ore averaging 59.5 per cent and 57,000 long tons of concentrate averaging 67 per cent. The total mine hoist was approximately 209,000 long tons. Operations were commenced through the new Leonard shaft on Jan. 18; the Brown shaft through which operations had been conducted since 1912 caved beyond repair on Sept. 26. No one was injured but pumping facilities were somewhat disrupted. In order to reach designed capacity a total of 400 men will be required with 300 underground. Due to shortage of labor all operations in 1945 were concentrated on the 1700 level. As fast as men can be hired and trained development of the 2100 and 2500 levels will commence. Mt. This report investigates whether it is tractable and thereupon reasonable to remove the booster influences when ranking the toxic fumes of non-cap-sensitive mining explosives. The hazard potential is represented by relative fume toxicity RFT, the resultant influence computed from a formulated rule with a restricted set (tally) of fume components and multiplying constants. The RFT result is compared to the rule criterion that represents the worst case tolerable toxicity stipulated by regulations or otherwise. The typical nonstoichiometric booster composition can render notable unwanted influence on the RFT ranking results. Historically, the remedy was to shoot the booster separately and reduce the trial concentrations by the relevant subtractions. Unreal negative concentration results were noted on rare occasions, revealing the faulty nature of the reduction procedure. With thermodynamic reaction chemistry codes TDRC, on the other hand, the booster ingredients can be retained in or removed from the reactant tabulation, yielding reduction factors taken as the concentration ratios for the two circumstances. The underlying presumption regarding reduction factors is that the ratios of component concentrations with and without the booster ingredients when resolved theoretically ought to equal those rendered experimentally, when tractable. Upon rearranging the presumed relationship, the unadjusted fume concentrations divided by theoretical reduction factors yield the wanted readjusted fume concentrations, thereby removing the booster influence without generating unreal negative concentrations. The work principle from thermodynamics restricted by the constraint of zero-net interaction loss is utilized in conjunction with the TDRC to resolve the wanted (Z-state) fume spectrum. This circumvents the recognized difficulty with traditional hydrodynamic detonation theory that is related to the nonideal reaction characteristics of typical mining explosives. The tacit characteristic of the Z-state resolved from the non-trajectory work principle is that it can not be remedied or tampered with, unlike the traditional trajectory techniques where the reaction products can be readjusted by changing formula representations, nullifying specific reactions or otherwise manipulating the thermodynamic trajectory process. Though the work principle theory is an unfinished formulation, the Z-state results prove worthy enough for rendering trends and comparisons and reaching otherwise useful conclusions. Further refinements should yield more reliable fume spectra and indicate explosive composition readjustments that would reduce toxic effects within underground mines and the wider world environment.

TO assist the mining industry in attacking problems of water control, the U. S. Geological Survey has begun a program of research in mining hydrology. In certain fundamental respects water control is similar to development of water supplies from wells or to the drainage of agricultural lands, as many of the tools developed in recent years for quantitative ground-water problems are applicable, with modification, to mine-water problems. In 1952 a 30-day pumping test conducted jointly by the Eureka Corp. Ltd. and the Defense Minerals Exploration Agency provided an opportunity to gain knowledge concerning water movements around a flooded mine shaft. The methods of analyzing the data may be used as a guide for the evaluation of similar problems elsewhere. The Fad shaft of the Eureka Corp. is on Ruby Hill, 1 1/2 miles west of Eureka, Nev. The shaft was completed at a depth of 2465 ft in November 1947 at a site adjacent to the downfaulted block in which the ore was found. As the drift on the 2250 level progressed toward the ore zone, a large flow of water was encountered after the Martin fault was intersected. This flow exceeded the installed pump capacity, and an unsuccessful attempt to recover the shaft and the 2250 level was made in 1948.1, 2 Geology and Hydrology: The complex structure of Ruby Hill is that of an anticline broken first by thrust faulting and later by normal faults. The present orebody comprises several mineralized zones within a block of the Eldorado limestone of middle Cambrian age which was downfaulted 1400 to 1600 ft, and it may be related to a similar body mined at a higher level south of the Ruby Hill fault. At the depth of the largest zone of ore the block is roughly rectangular in shape, about 1000 ft wide and 1500 ft long, and dips about 30" NE, see Fig. 1. It is apparently bounded on the south by the Ruby Hill fault, on the east by the Jackson fault, on the north by the Martin fault, and the west by the Bowman fault. Within the block, but between the Ruby Hill and the Martin faults, are the Office and Adams Hills faults; west of the block and the Bowman fault are the Albion and Spring Valley faults. There are many conflicting reports concerning the water-yielding characteristics of the Eldorado limestone and the condition of the fault zones, that is, whether they are open or tight. However, the diamond-drill records indicate that open spaces as much as 2 or 3 ft across were encountered, and considerable cementing and lining of holes was necessary to maintain circulation of drilling fluid. There is also evidence that the Eldorado limestone was cavernous where it was mined in the early days south of the Ruby Hill fault. At the site of the Fad shaft the formations encountered from the surface down included the Pogonip limestone, Dunderberg shale, Hamburg limestone, and Secret Canyon shale. These formations did not yield large quantities of water to the shaft. The Pogonip limestone, which appears to be permeable and might yield water elsewhere, is above the water table in the vicinity of the shaft. The Secret Canyon shale, immediately overlying the Eldorado in some places but in most places separated from it by the Geddes limestone,3 is apparently tight and does not transmit water. During the 30-day test period the shale briefly confined the water in the underlying formations so that artesian conditions were observed in drillholes E and F, which are cased into the Eldorado limestone, whereas unconfined conditions were observed in drillholes B, C, and D, which were open to the shale. The Geddes limestone, which normally lies between the Secret Canyon shale and the Eldorado limestone, was not encountered in the Fad shaft. The Geddes, a flaggy, fractured limestone, is reported capable of yielding large volumes of water. Water stored in the interstices of this thin-bedded limestone within the Ruby Hill fault zone on the 1200 level of the Locan shaft drowned the pumps in 1923 when the Richmond-Eureka Mining Co. attempted to explore the area along the fault. Eldorado limestone was not encountered in the Fad shaft. In the ore-block area the Eldorado limestone was not entirely offset from other water-yielding formations by movement along the Bowman fault; therefore it may be hydraulically connected with the other formations. Adjacent to the Ruby Hill, Jackson, and Martin faults, the Eldorado lies in contact with other possible water-yielding formations. One of these, the Prospect Mountain quartzite, is separated from the Eldorado by thin, sheared, and broken beds of the Geddes within the Ruby Hill fault zone. A limited examination by the author of the Prospect Mountain quartzite in the Richmond mine at a higher level and south of the Ruby Hill fault indicates that the quartzite is poorly permeable. The monzonite mass south of the quartzite would be a further barrier to the flow of water. The poor permeability of this area is substantiated by records of levels at which water was encountered south of the Ruby Hill fault. In view of the normally low rate of ground-water recharge, if this desert area had been permeable, water levels could not have been maintained at altitudes of many hundred feet above the present water table west and north of Ruby Hill. Thus the ore-bearing block of Eldorado limestone is in contact with possible water-yielding rocks on at least two sides, and if the fault zones are possible conduits for water circulation the geologic and hydrologic conditions are suitable for the infinite-aquifer type of analysis as used and modified here. Este artigo pretende contribuir na compreensão da produtividade de mão de obra por meio de análise do setor de produção de aço da América Latina. A discussão teórica fundamenta-se em Tangen (2005), que demonstra como o termo produtividade embora muito utilizado é vagamente definido e mal-entendido e que o conceito mais largamente aceito é a relação entre saída (output) e entrada (input). Nesse contexto, realizou-se um estudo com setor siderúrgico da América Latina com dados do ano de 2015. A pesquisa foi realizada entre Março e Agosto de 2016 com os principais gestores de engenharia industrial e/ou de recursos humanos das empresas, onde se procurou identificar relação entre a produção de aço bruto (saída) e a mão de obra empregada diretamente envolvida no processo de produção, isto é, equipes de operação e manutenção, do quadro próprio e de terceiros, excluindo-se todo o demais efetivo bem como o pessoal afastado por férias e por outros motivos, acrescido de horas extraordinárias trabalhados no período, medido em termos de t/FTE. Os resultados mostraram uma produtividade mediana de 1534 t/FTE, variando dependendo de a empresa ter rota integrada ou semi-integrada e produtora de aços planos ou longos. A contribuição deste estudo reside na proposição de uma metodologia de cálculo de produtividade de mão de obra na produção de aço, possibilitando comparação entre diferentes segmentos desta indústria, outras empresas e regiões do mundo, além de permitir acompanhar sua evolução ao longo do tempo.

The Express Rail Link (XRL) will provide high-speed rail services from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and a connection to the national high-speed passenger rail network serving major cities throughout Mainland, China. The HK$ 67 B (NZ$ 11.5 Billion) project is of great strategic importance for Hong Kong and is being implemented to a very tight schedule, from early 2010 with completion targeted for 2015.The works include a 15 platform terminus station in West Kowloon, 26 km of twin track tunnels from the terminus to the Hong Kong/Shenzhen boundary at Mai Po, tunnel vent shafts/adits/emergency rescue siding and a stabling siding facility. Trains on the Hong Kong section are intended to operate at speed up to 200 km per hour and up to 350 km per hour on the Mainland section.This presentation will provide an overview of the entire XRL project, with a focus on the challenging geotechnical and spatial constraints on the tunnel works. This is an abstract only. No paper was prepared for this abstract.

The minerals industry is faced with choices beginning in the exploration phase and extending over the life cycle of the mine. Firms examine the technical feasibility of alternative actions and typically rank them based on economic performance. Increasingly firms also consider alternativesÆ contribution to sustainable development. There are many visions of what a sustainable future should look like and much debate about what should be sustained. Sustainability is a process, a series of incremental actions, and each alternative course of action has the potential to further progress toward one or more sustainability goal. However, because it is not possible to sustain everything everywhere simultaneously, trade-offs and choices inevitably have to be made.Sustainable decision making before investment (ex ante decisions) should incorporate a broad suite of quantitative and qualitative information. One approach is to utilise an integrated sustainability assessment (ISA) framework that supplements traditional technical and financial tools with other tools such as objectives hierarchies (OH) and life cycle assessments (LCA). OH is a problem framing method that captures stakeholder and decision maker interests, objectives and values. LCA addresses material and energy flows, and environmental impacts. The outputs of these tools can be combined with additional qualitative measures and analysed using multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA). MCDA models facilitate comparison of different alternatives on the basis of a set of criteria and indicators. Some can incorporate information on risk attitudes and preferences ( multi-attitribute value theory models) and others uncertainty about outcomes (multi-attribute utility models). Studies have been published describing and comparing tools for minerals sector decision analysis. Our paper extends this literature, discussing how a combined OH-LCA-MCDA can support ex ante sustainability assessment by incorporating preferences, risk attitudes, and monetised or non-monetised social and economic variables, in a manner that captures their inherent complexity. We also discuss how such a combined model would support trade-off analysis.

"Friction stir spot welding of aluminum alloy AA6061-T6 sheets was performed with circular (plunge depths 0.4 and 0.6 mm), square and triangular tool pin (plunge depth 0.4 mm) with constant 0.2 mm shoulder penetration to characterize various zones of weld nugget. It was observed that the depth of the stir zone formed below the tool pin is comparatively similar for different tool pins but wider for circular tool pin. The size of another stir zone formed at the interface of tool pin and a tool shoulder is observed to be larger for triangular and square tool pin due to the higher swept rate. Predicted strain from finite element analysis, calculated strain rate using Zener-Hollomon relationship and experimentally measured grain size distribution indicates severe amount of plastic deformation in-and-around the nugget/spot region. Finer grains in various stir zones were observed than thermo-mechanically and heat affected zones. Grain size (at distribution peaks) in stir zones varied around 2.54 µm to 3.69 µm for different tool pin profiles as compared to base metal grain size of 20 µm. Microhardness results indicate that the welded region is quite softened than base metal and maximum hardness is mostly observed around the thermo-mechanically affected zone.INTRODUCTION Friction stir spot welding (FSSW) is widely used for joining the sheets of materials like aluminum, copper, magnesium, etc. The process begins by plunging a rotating tool (generally having a pin and a shoulder) into the sheets to be welded. Continuous stirring of the tool and downward plunging force generates localized heat due to friction at the tool-sheet interface and plastic deformation of the sheet metal. The material gets softened and the plasticized material adjacent to the tool pin starts flowing due to the action of tool rotation and tool plunge thereby causing intermixing and bonding between the overlapped sheets. The tool stirring also promotes grain refinement in the weld nugget associated with high strain, strain rate and thermal cycle. The formation of new microstructure also affects the mechanical properties and efficiency of FSSW joints. Studies also showed that the tool pin design and tool shoulder feature exerts a noteworthy influence on the material flow and intermixing during the FSSW process (Reilly et al., 2015; Hirasawa et al., 2010). Sarkar et al. (2016) studied the material flow and intermixing during FSSW using tracer material method and reported that the size and width of flow zone increases with tool penetration depth. The influence of tool rotational speed on microstructure and stir zone temperature was investigated during FSSW of dissimilar AA6061-AA5754 alloys (Gerlich et al., 2007). They reported that the average grain size in stir zone of AA6061 weld increases with increase in tool rotational speed. In another work, Gerlich et al. (2008) studied the local melting and tool slippage during FSSW of Al alloys. Tool slippage was investigated by calculating the strain rate using Zener-Hollomon relation. Garg and Bhattacharya (2017a) studied the effect of dwell time, tool pin profiles and tool rotational speed on shear strength, microstructure, temperature and strain distribution during FSSW of AA6061. In another work, Garg and Bhattacharya (2017b) analyzed the effect of different tool pins and pinless tools on the shear strength and microstructure during similar and dissimilar FSSW of AA6061-T6 and pure Cu. Chang et al. (2004) proposed mathematical relationship between the average grain size and Zener-Hollomon parameter during friction stir processing of Mg alloy. Solhjoo (2010) presented a mathematical approach to determine the critical strain as a function of peak strain required for initiation of dynamic recrystallization in austenitic stainless steel. Fratini and Buffa (2005) also proposed the numerical model to determine the grain size during continuous dynamic recrystallization phenomenon."

Mine optimization is a key strategy in the mining industry that focuses on improving the efficiency, productivity, and sustainability of mining operations. To achieve mine optimization, digitalization is essential for modernizing mining operations and attaining optimal performance. Due to the importance of mine digitalization, various software and platforms have been released to support this effort. Furthermore, by integrating these advanced technologies, mines can enhance processes, leading to significant economic and operational benefits. However, integrating data from various sources and collaborating across different platforms remains a significant challenge in the mining industry. Generally, data for mine optimization, such as mapping, smart drilling, FMS (Fleet Management Systems), fragmentation analysis, or vibration analysis, are collected and analyzed separately on different platforms. This separation makes it difficult to aggregate and utilize data comprehensively for overall mining process optimization. During the digitalization process, obstacles arise due to these complexity, variability, and sharing issues of data across different maker, sources, and methods. These challenges highlight the need for seamless integration to achieve optimal mining operations. Thus, this study applied a total solution that can cover the entire Drilling and Blasting (D&B) processes. The blast design was performed using actual terrain mapping data, and drilling and charging were conducted following a guide based on the blast design plan. After blasting, loading and hauling distances and fuel consumption were measured, and fragmentation for each blast was evaluated. All measurement tasks were automated to minimize human error. By collecting all data in one server, it became possible to perform an overall evaluation for each blast, allowing the identification of optimal values. In conclusion, to evaluate the optimization effects for each mining process, one month of integrated data collected on a single server was used. Compared to the period before the Total solution was implemented, there were notable improvements: a 25% enhancement in hole spacing, a 60% improvement in floor flatness, a 23% reduction in average fragment size, and a 19% improvement in fragment uniformity. Regarding cost savings per blasting volume, the improvements were 11.7% in drilling, 9.3% in explosives, 7.6% in loading, and 17.5% in hauling.

Conventional flame channelling operates continuously at over 120 db --flame-drill channelling at a maximum of 95 db. The latter process was developed under this program. Individual drill holes are spaced to leave narrow rock webs. Sound and dust passing from the hole are effectively treated by a muffler and water injection.

THE senior author of this paper has expressed the belief that when gamma iron transforms into alpha iron on reaching the A3 point, each gamma grain does not change bodily into one or more alpha grains but that the alpha phase forms first at the boundaries and along the crystallographic planes of the austenite grains.1 To quote: On cooling through the point A, at about 900° C., iron passes from the gamma condition to a. new allotropic form generally designated as alpha. This transforma¬tion, however, is not instantaneous. There are good reasons for believing that it begins at the grain boundaries and along the octahedral planes of the crystals and that it progresses until each grain of gamma iron is changed into a grain of alpha iron, the resulting structure being similar to that of gamma iron. Were it possible to retain at room temperature pure iron but partially transformed, it seems probable that a Widmanstättian structure, or rather, as later explained, a martensitic structure would be observed (Fig. 1), consisting of alpha iron at the boundaries and at the octahedral planes, and of a groundmass of gamma iron. In order to confirm, if possible, the accuracy of that view, a number of experiments were conducted. Polished samples of electrolytic iron were heated in a vacuum, maintained in the gamma range for several hours and quenched in different media. It was hoped by such means to produce and retain on the polished surfaces a pattern which would reveal the mechanism of the allotropic transformation. The samples were placed in evacuated quartz tubes, heated to 1000° C. and held 2 hr. at that temperature. The tubes were then immersed in the quenching bath. Iced brine and liquid air were used first. The polyhedral austenitic structure existing at the time of immersion was very clearly revealed (Fig. 2). This is generally ascribed to iron volatilizing at the grain boundaries.

Dynamic failures, or "bumps", remain an imperative safety concern in underground coal mining, despite significant advancements in engineering controls. While many factors have been empirically linked to the occurrence of dynamic failure events, identifying a consistent, repeatable set of criteria within a field setting has proven elusive; conditions generally associated with dynamic failure might produce an event at one site, but not another. Conversely and more troubling, dynamic failure could occur where relatively few of these factors exist. The presence of spatially discrete, stiff roof units, such as paleo channels, are one such feature that has been linked to the occurrence of dynamic failure events. However, an empirical stratigraphic review investigating the relative frequency of discrete units in bumping versus non-bumping deposits indicates that no significant difference exists based on this criterion alone, and that instead an apparent relationship exists between reportable bump history and the overall character of the host rock with respect to stiffness. Due to the complexity of the bump problem, however, these results are not conclusive, as they do not take into account any variable other than the presence or absence of stiff members in the roof lithology; To weight the relative impact of changes in a single variable, such as the thickness or location of sandstone members, it must be examined in isolation-i.e. in a setting where all other variables are held constant. Numerical modelling provides this setting, and the effects of variability in a stiff discrete member in a hypothetical longwall mining scenario are investigated within the context of three stratigraphic "types'', as determined by the ratio of stiff to compliant stratigraphic members; Compliant, Intermediate and Stiff A modelling experiment examines changes in rupture potential in stiff roof units for each stratigraphic type as discrete unit thickness and location are manipulated through a range of values. Results suggest that the stiff-to-compliant ratio of the host rock has an impact on the relative stress-inducing effects of discrete stiff members. In other words, it is necessary to consider both the thickness and the distance to the seam, within the context of the host rock, to accurately anticipate areas of elevated rupture induced hazard; acknowledging the presence of a discrete unit within the overburden in general terms is an insufficient indicator of risk. Through modelling of anticipated changes in the placement and dimensions of discrete units within their stratigraphic setting, elevated rupture-induced bump hazard can be anticipated on a case by case basis. Were similar modelling studies conducted at mine sites in tandem with tracking of problematic discrete stiff units, areas of elevated rupture risk could be anticipated in advance of mining. Developing this predictive capability beyond identifying rupture potential in discrete roof members is essential to the eventual elimination of dynamic failure related worker injuries and fatalities. As stress is a necessary component in the occurrence of dynamic failure events, this finding helps to refine our understanding of the role of individual stiff, strong roof members in bumping phenomena, and suggests that a more holistic view of overburden lithology, combined with site-specific numerical modelling, may be necessary to achieve greater miner safety.

"Previously, we upgraded and implemented two gamma activation assay (GAA) systems designed to analyse the gold content in raw ores at Zarafshan laboratory, Uzbekistan, and achieved a detection limit of less than 0.05 g/t under actual industrial conditions. Having started to design a fully modern, industrial GAA system for mining companies, this paper analyses the advantages, disadvantages, and special features of all major system components that can influence the sensitivity and accuracy of the analysis. The results of a study to optimize the detector geometry and sample size are presented and the performances of the linear electron accelerator, detector array, and sample transportation system of a modern, industrial GAA system for analysing gold, silver, and rare earth elements are considered. IntroductionGamma activation analysis (GAA) has considerable potential as a future replacement for traditional fire assay analysis in gold mining (Hoffman, Clark, and Yeager, 1998; Morse, 1977; Bourmistenko, 1986, 1981; Sammut, 2016; Tickner et al., 2017). The essence of GAA is to irradiate ore samples with high-energy gamma quanta generated by an electron linear accelerator (LINAC) and then to use a gamma spectrometer to detect the induced activity of the excited gold nuclei. The advantages of this method are discussed in detail elsewhere (Hoffman, Clark, and Yeager, 1998; Morse, 1977; Bourmistenko, 1986, 1981; Sammut, 2016; Tickner et al., 2017), where it is shown that GAA is uniquely suited to analysing ore samples when mining for gold, other precious metals, and accompanying elements.These advantages were realized in three industrial GAA laboratories that were commissioned in Zarafshan, Uzbekistan in 1977, in Magadan, Russia in 1979, and in Batagay, Russia in 1986 (Bourmistenko, 1986; Nii Tekhnicheskoy Fiziki I Avtomatiki, n.d). In 1989, a fourth industrial GAA laboratory was commissioned at a gold mine in Tommot, Russia. However, the project was subsequently halted due to economic reasons (Moshkov and Tjamisov, 2017). Currently, only the laboratory of the Muruntau mine in Zarafshan, Uzbekistan is in operation. The gamma activation method for gold determination is widely applicable at this mine owing to its high productivity and low cost of analysis. An outstanding aspect is the performance of more than one million analyses per year."

GEOPHYSICAL exploration is continuing to expand in scope and variety of methods, in experimental studies of specific applications, and in development of theory for complex situations. Aerial surveys have been made economically more attractive by simultaneous recording of magnetic and radioactivity data, and aerial electromagnetic surveys have been attempted. The most significant success of mining geophysics was the discovery of huge lead-zinc-copper sulphide ore deposits in New Brunswick, Canada. Spectacular geophysical astivity has occurred in the area as a result of these discoveries, and geophysics is expected to continue to play a large role in this drift-covered area. Other developments this year find the Atomic Energy Commission making available monthly reports of the location of anomalous radioactivity detected in aerial and ground surveys and the AEC is installing supersensitive radioactivity assaying instruments in about 25 localities in the U. S. Interest in helicopters is being aroused because of potentialities for near-ground surveys and better location control of anomalies. Japan can be added to the list of countries using geophysical surveys extensively.

One of the most important parameters in rock/resin/bolt load transfer mechanism is the surface property of the bolt. Although there are various bolt surface configurations available in the market, very little work is reported on the bolt/resin interface failure mechanism. This paper examines the behaviour of bolt surface roughness under constant normal stiffness conditions which is considered as being a realistic way of evaluating bolt surface roughness. A series of shear tests have been conducted on the flattened bolt surface to study the shear behaviour of bolt/resin interface. Based on the experimental results, a mathematical model has been developed to predict the shear resistance of the bolt/resin interface at various normal stress levels for the bolt types used in the study.

Two-stage electric smelting tests, using small submerged arc furnaces, were made on high-iron manganiferous materials from the Pioche District, Nev., and the Cuyuna Range, Minn. The object was to reduce sufficient iron in the first stage to give a slag with a favorable Mn to Fe ratio for smelting to ferromanganese in the second stage. The nodulized flotation concentrate from the Pioche District contained 29.2 percent Mn and had a Mn to Fe ratio of 2.3:l. When smelted with coke and silica or alumina as flux, more than 90 percent of the manganese was recovered in slags with Mn to Fe ratios of 10: :24:1. The Pioche slag was smelted to ferromanganese using coke and lime- stone or dolomite as flux. The ferromanganese was high in silicon but other- wise met specifications. Recovery of manganese to ferromanganese in this step was 73 to 78 percent. Overall recovery of manganese was about 70 percent. The sintered flotation concentrate from the Cuyuna Range material contained 12.9 percent Mn and had a Mn to Fe ratio of 0.3:1. When smelted with limestone as flux, about 83 percent of the manganese was recovered in a slag with a Mn to Fe ratio of about 6:1. The Cuyuna slag was smelted to ferromanganese with coke and limestone for flux. Recovery in this step was 61 percent of the manganese in a high silicon ferromanganese. Overall recovery of manganese was about 50 percent.

It is important for a refractory supplier to make systematic petro-graphic examinations of products which have been in service in the furnaces and kilns of customers. The petrographic examination of refractory service samples involves the microscopic study of polished and/or thin sections, supplemented by electron probe microanalysis, as well as the bulk chemical and XRD analysis of zones in the samples. The evolution of the A. P. Green Refractories Company petrographic laboratory is described, and the application of petrographic methods is illustrated in the examination of service refractories from a Portland cement rotary kiln and an AOD stainless steel vessel. The objectives of such studies are to assist the customer in the solution of his refractory problems, and to accumulate data which are of use in the design of improved refractory products.

The W. E. Dunkle mine, sometimes called the Costello Creek coal mine, is 8 miles N. 20° W. of Colorado Station on the Alaska Railroad. The presence of coal in this area has been known since the district was extensively prospected for gold between 1911 and 1915. At that time, coal from this deposit was used by miners for blacksmithing. The increased demand for coal resulting from government defense projects in Alaska led to exploitation of this deposit in 1941. The inability of Alaska coal mines to supply the quantity of coal required by public and private consumers and by the armed forces in Alaska was responsible for establishment by the Army of the Coal Procurement Section of its Alaska Department. It proposed to investigate the deposits and to expedite production from the Alaskan coal fields. The Bureau of Mines closely cooperated in this program. The quality of the Dunkle coal and the favorable location of the deposit caused it to be one of the properties chosen for investigation under a joint Army-Bureau of Mines-Geological Survey program.

This paper provides a review on coloured gold, platinum, andpalladium intermetallic compounds, and discusses the models thatwere developed to obtain these materials. These compounds have acrystal structure of high symmetry, such as the CaF2or CsClstructures, ensuring distinct electron band structures. Variousexamples of coloured gold, platinum, and palladium intermetalliccompounds are provided. More in-depth discussion is provided on thepurple gold (AuAl2) and yellow platinum-aluminium (PtAl2)compounds with CaF2structure, as well as the purplish-pinkpalladium-indium (PdIn) compound with CsCl structure. Precious metal intermetallic compounds are used in jewellery andprovide a new dimension to design. Some of these compounds havealso found use as barrier coatings on turbine blades for jet engines,and more recently, research has been conducted into their potentialuse as catalysts, electro-catalysts, sensors, capacitors, and fordecorative coatings.
