The Macassa Division of Lac Minerals Ltd. is a high grade gold mine that has been operating in Kirkland Lake, Ontario for the past 51 years. It produces approximately 120,000 tonnes of ore per year, averaging approximately 18.7 grams per tonne (0.45 ounces per ton) of gold. Over the years, the ore body has been developed to a point where mining takes place below the 1,220 m (4,000 feet) elevation and 1,830 m elevation (6,000 feet) west of the original shaft. The mine is currently serviced by two surface and two winze shafts. (Figure 1). The ore body extends below the 1,930 m (6,400 feet) Level which is the bottom of the existing mining operation. An ambitious underground exploration program has substantially increased these reserves. Concurrent with the discovery of greater reserves, has been rapidly escalating mining costs, particularly labour which constituted 66% of the total cost in 1981. These costs continued to escalate as the major proportion of mining was carried out to the west, far away from the existing hoisting systems. This required a three lift hoisting system for men, materials and ore. In addition to the increased travel time and ore handling expense, increased humidity, temperature, ventilation and compressed air losses have added to the inefficiency of the operation. As a result, studies were initiated in 1980 to assess the future of the Macassa operation. The results of the studies indicated that a new deep shaft with a potential to hoist from 2,135 m (7,000 feet) or below was the most attractive option. Detailed design of the shaft and associated surface plant commenced in January, 1982 and the following milestone dates were achieved: 1980 - initial study of hoisting and haulage facilities; January, 1981 - ore reserves in excess of 1 million tonnes of ore at 18.7 g/tonne (0.45 oz/ton) confirmed; March, 1982 - preliminary study of Macassa No. 3 Shaft completed; April, 1982 - permanent hoisting plant purchased; June, 1982 - site clearing commenced; September, 1982 - shaft collared; May 1, 1983 - shaft sinking commenced; February 11, 1985 - shaft reached 1,600 m (1mile); December 1, 1985 - shaft scheduled for completion.

The aim of this paper is to present the development of a data validation software as component of a commercial mass balance package. Data reconciliation through mass balance is basically an optimization problem constrained by the law of mass conservation. As any optimization problem solved with a modern and robust software application, erroneous information or starting point will always lead to a solution, whether it is realistic or not. Moreover, good information wrongly weighted by an incorrect error model will lead to the same bad ending. In an industrial context where competition requires accurate information, data reconciliation without validation can be disastrous and calls for data validation before and after reconciliation. The challenge in automated data validation resides in the development of general theoretical solutions. Until now, none has been presented and only partial solutions are available. The development presented in this paper incorporates some of these partial solutions. The integration of human knowledge into the application paved the way to a more general solution. The combination ?theoretical validation ? human expertise? proved to be flexible and reliable enough to be integrated in a commercial data validation package. Numerous examples though industrial applications are presented. These applications demonstrate the validation of raw measurements, user support in the development of error models and validation of reconciled measurements.

"INTRODUCTION An electrolytic process for the preparation of metallic cobalt has been developed recently in the Bureau of Mines Experimental Station at Boulder City, Nev. Chemical analysis shows this cobalt to contain impurities in small percentages, chief of which is nickel. It is desirable to be able to determine these impurities spectrographically. This report is concerned with a procedure for the spectrochemical determination of nickel in cobalt.Previous spectrographic work on cobalt was done by Breckpot and Mevis,/ who used the method of homologous pairs of lines. However, it was felt that a more detailed investigation was needed, employing the method of internal standards.ACKNOWLEDGMENTWe are indebted to B. G. The feasibility assessment of a mineral deposit requires the construction of a geo mechanical model of rock mass properties, for the purpose of preliminary mine design. The Noranda Technology Centre has been involved in the development of geomechanical models for several mineral deposits at the feasibility stage. Each model is constructed through intact rock testing, geotechnical core logging, geotechnical mapping and rock mass classification. Rock mechanics principles are used to develop conceptual stope designs and propose possible mining sequences. This methodology is applicable to both new mining projects and to the development of new areas within anoperating mine. This paper explains how the geomechanical model is developed and reviews its application to several case studies.

The evaluation of certain reser-voir properties, such as porosity and fluid saturation, from electrical well surveys has been widely accepted in petroleum engineering. Various investigators have established relationships between these properties and certain parameters which affect the response of the electrical log. Among these are the resistivities of the mud, its filtrate, and its filter cake. In 1949, Patnode1 established a relationship between the resistivities of the mud and filtrate. The well logging service companies have contributed relationships for the mud-mud cake resistivities2,3 These have been valuable since it was the practice to measure only resistivity of mud at the well site. During the mid-1940's the industry began drilling wells with oil-emulsion drilling fluids. These were conventional aqueous muds with a dispersed oil phase. Since 1950, oil-emulsion muds have been used on an increasing number of wells each year. However, the practice of measuring only the resistivity of the mud at the well site has continued, and the mud filtrate and mud cake resistivities have been determined by the above-mentioned relationships. Service companies are now equipped to measure all three resistivities at the well site. An investigation was conducted on the resistivities of oil-emulsion muds, mud filtrates, and mud cakes to determine if these values conformed to the relationships for aqueous muds. TYPES OF MUDS Fifty-one oil-emulsion mud samples were prepared in the laboratory following a standard manual' published by a leading mud company. The diesel oil in the samples varied from 5 to 50 per cent, the majority of the samples being in the 10 per cent region. The basic aqueous mud types which were converted to oil-emulsion muds were commercial clay and bentonite muds, low pH and high pH, caustic-quebracho treated muds, and lime treated muds. The emulsions were stabilized by dispersed solids, lignins, lignosulfo-nates, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, or sulfonated petrolatum. It is worthy of note that after a quiescent period of two weeks at room temperature all samples, regardless of emulsifying agent, remained stable. The make-up water for the muds was from the laboratory tap. Resistivities were varied by the addition of table salt to the water. A range of mud resistivities from 0.44 to 3.9 ohm-m was obtained in this way. Twenty-three field muds were tested. These covered the same range of mud types as did laboratory muds. Oil provinces of the Gulf Coast, South Texas, West Texas, Oklahoma, Montana, and Canada were represented. MUD TEST PROCEDURE Each mud was tested for density, viscosity, pH, and filter loss by standard testing techniques. The resistivity measurements were obtained with a Schlumberger EMT meter. This meter required small volumes of sample, e.g., 2 mm. Filtrate was obtained from a Standard Baroid fil-ter press at the end of a 30-minute test. The filter cake from the same test was used for cake resistivity measurements. Mud, filtrate, and cake samples were heated to 100" F in a constant temperature water bath prior to measurement of resistivities. RESULTS The relation between mud resistivity (Rm) and mud filtrate resistivity (Rmf) is shown in Fig. 1. The solid line represents an average for the data. The equation of this line is Rmf =0.876 (Rm) 1.075 . . (1) Arbitrary limits, indicated by the dashed curves, have been set. The majority of the data falls within these limits, but some points do lie outside the limits. The approximate equation Rmt = 0.88 Rm , . . . . (2) will give satisfactory results within these limits. The data on mud cake resistivity Rmc is shown in Fig. 2. The solid line is an average for the data. The equation for the line is Rmc = 1.306 (Rm)0.88 The dashed lines are arbitrary limits on the data. Within these limits, Eq. 3 may be simplified to Rmc = 1.31 Rm . . . . (4) DISCUSSION The limiting curves in Figs. 1 and 2 represent maximum deviations of ±25 per cent. Thus the use of the average curves can introduce considerable error. There is no substitute for accurate measurements of mud, mud cake, and mud filtrate resistivities at the well site. The mud sample tested should be representative of the mud opposite the formation being logged. The average mud filtrate resistivity curve of Fig. 1 is reproduced in Fig. 3 with two curves which have been published for clay-base aqueous muds2,3. The latter curves were determined from average values of a large number of drilling fluids. The three curves have essentially the same slope and the differences between them are from 7 to 22 per cent. Comparison is made only to illustrate the possibility of error

In this Bureau of Mines study, sealants containing mineral wool, cement, etc, were sprayed through dry-process equipment that propels dry material pneumatically to the water-adding nozzle. Advantages over slurry applications include no mixing, no extensive cleanup, and freedom from hardened cement in equipment should power be lost. Sealants with large mineral wool nodules (>l-inch) were sprayable at rates to 900 square feet per hour for 1/2-inch thickness with little dust and smooth material flow through equipment, but they were weak for mine use, Materials containing small wool nodules (1/4-inch) were stronger but tended to plug lines because the nodules were inadequately separated in the shredder. Increasing the dedusting oil also increased line plugging by holding the nodules together in larger lumps. Best results were obtained using a 3/4-inch-nodule wool with cement binder, which provided both smooth flow through the machine and adequate strength.

A method for preparing ferrochromium alloys containing less than 2 pct carbon has been devised in a single vacuum furnace reactor. This method can conserve chromium and should reduce the capital and energy requirements relative to chromite electrothermal reduction. Reduced products containing less than 2 and as low as 0.01 wt pct carbon were obtained by reacting pellets of chromite and carbonaceous reductant mixtures at pressures of 0.1 to 1 ton and temperatures of 1,230° to 1,320° C. The extent of reduction increased with increased temperature and decreased pressure; however, operating conditions were limited due to the onset of significant chromium vaporization at higher temperatures and lower pressures. Foundry coke, anthracite, and carbon black were found to be superior to graphite as reductants. The reduction of chromite to metallics was found to proceed via the carbide intermediates Fe3C or Cr3C2. Lime accelerates the. rate of solid state reduction of chromite and can shorten the furnacin1r time at 1,3000 C under vacuum from 13 hours to less than three hours. Additional lime and silica are added to the hot reduced chromite after releasing the vacuum and raising the furnace. temperature to 1, 700° C. Soaking the charge for about 20 minutes gave a button of low carbon ferrochromium alloy beneath a well-defined slag layer.

Feed level and thickness measurements are essential in the optimization of an electric arc furnace. A precise measurement of the feed thickness and level gives operators the ability to increase the smelter efficiency and reduce the maintenance cost. Hatch has developed a radar system which is an affordable, low maintenance, and accurate level measurement system. The radar units can be installed across the furnace to measure the feed level and the feed thickness can be calculated with one slag level sounding. The present paper describes the development of radar systems as a process optimizing tool by furnace controls. The authors will discuss the challenges involved in installing eight radar units on the roof of a six-in-line electric furnace.

The sharp drop in world phosphate demand that took place in 1975 due to temporarily high prices, now seems to be reversing itself. And prices for both phosphate rock and phosphate fertilizers, which declined dramatically from their 1975 highs, now appear to be bottoming out. This recent price weakness has delayed new mining ventures that had been planned for completion by around 1980. While there is ample capacity to supply near-term rock needs, the stage seems to be emerging for a better supply-demand and price environment in the late 1970's and early 1980's.

Alaska is a land of immense proportions and resources. Its very name, derived from an Aleut term, means "The Great Land." Yet, in a state slightly larger than Texas, California, and Montana combined, there are presently only two-large scale mines in production, excluding dredge operations. Once referred to by its territorial governor as "a storehouse of minerals," Alaska is, in the opinion of many industry observers, at least 20 years away from a healthy, productive mining industry. The mineral potential of the state is tremendous: coal deposits on the North Slope alone have been hypothetically pegged at 1.5 trillion tons. Copper-zinc deposits on the south flank of the Brooks Range are conservatively estimated to be worth $4 billion to $6 billion. Nearly every community in the United States is dependent on aggregate (sand, gravel, and crushed stone) resources to build and maintain its infrastructure. Unfortunately, developing aggregate resources to meet societal needs causes environmental impacts. Most environmental impacts associated with aggregate mining are benign. Extracting aggregate seldom produces acid mine drainage or other toxic effects commonly associated with mining of metallic or energy resources. The most obvious environmental impact of aggregate mining is the conversion of land use, most likely from undeveloped or agricultural land use, to a hole in the ground. This major impact is accompanied by loss of habitat, noise, dust, blasting effects, erosion, sedimentation, and changes to the visual scene. Some of the impacts are short-lived, and most are easy to predict and easy to observe. Most impacts can be controlled, mitigated, or kept at tolerable levels and can be restricted to the immediate vicinity of the aggregate operation by employing responsible operating practices and available technology. The intensity of environmental impacts generated as a result of mining are determined in large part by the geologic characteristics of aggregate deposits (geomorphology, geometry, and physical and chemical properties). Mining deposits that are too thin, or contain too much unsuitable material, results in the generation of excessively large mined areas and large amounts of waste material. Mining aggregate can lead to serious environmental impacts in some situations. Some geologic environments such as active stream channels, slide-prone areas, and karst terrain are dynamic and respond rapidly to outside stimuli including aggregate mining. Some geomorphic areas and (or) ecosystems underlain with aggregate serve as habitat for rare or endangered species. Similarly, some geomorphic features are themselves rare examples of geologic phenomena or processes. Mining aggregate might be acceptable in some of these areas, but should be conducted only after careful consideration, and then only with extreme prudence. Failure to do so can lead to serious, long-lasting, and irreversible environmental consequences, either in the vicinity of the site or at locations distant from the site. Environmental impacts caused by irresponsible aggregate mining can compromise mining in an entire region.

Prolonged exposure to airborne respirable coal mine dust is responsible for coal workers' pneumoconi¬osis (CWP): Furthermore, miners who show evidence of higher radiographic categories of simple CWP are at increased risk of developing progressive massive fibro¬sis (PMF). As of 1990, there were nearly 130,000 coal miners in the United States. "' This excludes mines that produce less than 10,000 tons annually and the anthracite coal mines. Estimates indicate that at age 58, an average of 7/1000 U.S. workers and 89/1000 U.K workers will have developed PMF(2-1) Health research studies have iden¬tified that the risk of developing and the severity of CWP arc directly related to (1) the amount of respirable dust exposure and (2) the coal rank.,'- The rank of coal is its stage of formation in the series peat, lignite, sub-bituminous, bituminous, and anthra¬cite (in order of increasing rank). The rank of coal can also be represented by the com¬mercially important characteristics specified by its proximate analysis: fixed carbon, vol¬atile matter, mineral matter, and moisture content.

INTRODUCTION Kerckhoff-2 is a 140 MW underground hydro-electric project designed and owned by Pacific Gas and Electric Company and constructed between May, 1980 and May, 1983 by Auburn Constructors. The project is located in the western foothills of the Central Sierra Nevada Mountains, about 30 miles northeast of Fresno, California, and develops the power potential of the lower San Joaquin River and its tributaries between the existing Kerckhoff and Millerton Lakes. The Kerckhoff-2 Project consists of project roads, adits, and access tunnels, service tunnels, power tunnels, powerhouse, tailrace tunnel surge shaft, buss shaft, intake structure, discharge structure, and switchyard. In the 1920s, the Kerckhoff 1 project, consisting of a dam, reservior, tunnel, and 34 MW powerhouse, was built in the same general area as Kerckhoff-2. The tunnel was constructed by conventional methods, and was left unlined. In time, other projects were built upstream, allowing the flow of the San Joaquin River to be regulated. The Kerckhoff 2 project is designed to harness that regulated flow, providing an additional 140,000 ON of power. Kerckhoff 2 will be the primary power plant; Kerckhoff I will produce power whenever the flow rate exceeds 4,800 cubic feet. The new power tunnel is built along the east side of the San Joaquin River between Kerckhoff and Millerton Lakes, parallel to the existing tunnel but extending approximately one mile further downstream.

Five attended the Diamond Jubilee Convention as guests of the Institute at the June 83rd Regular Meeting held in Snowmass Village. Colorado. Each received a recognition plaque and $500.00 to be used toward tuition in his junior year beginning September, 1987. Keith McGinnis. Scholarship Chairman, personally interviewed candidates at three of six colleges and universities in the program. As this is a continuing award the winners this year and those from last year will receive an additional $500.00credit toward tuition if they maintain a satisfactory academic average and are again recommended by their colleges or universities. Respirable dust produced during blasting operations in underground mines exhibits both diffusion and convection properties of the airflow. However, the application of the mathematical model presently used to calculate the change in time in the concentration of blasting pollutants is mostly limited to a single drift and cannot be easily utilized for blasts taking place in stopes. This paper discusses an analytical solution based on considerations that enable us to reliably identify the initial condition. Such an approach may be used for any blasting area regardless of its position, its size, or the ventilation system in use during blasting. In addition, a test procedure using field data is established to determined those parameters not measured directly. As well, equations are derived to find the diffusion coefficient, and the position and size of a dust source from the field data. Mathematical considerations The convection-diffusion problem, for a one-dimensional case, is described by the following partial differential equation (PDE): ct. = Dcxx - Vcx + source - sink(1) where C = the concentration of a pollutant T = time V = the mean air velocity in x-direction D = the diffusion coefficient X = distance away from the pollutant source source = any additional pollutant source specified by an initial value problem sink = decay of a pollutant inside the region specified by the boundary conditions. Respirable dust produced during blasting is best considered as an initial value problem (IVP). To derive a mathematical model, the following assumptions are made: •At time zero (t = 0), the dust source is at point x = 0 of an infinite drift. •The problem is considered a one-dimensional case. •The mean velocity of air and the diffusion coefficient are constant. •There is no source or sink of dust other than specified at point x = 0 and time t = 0. The tribological and mechanical properties of binderless and metal-bonded niobium carbides (8 or 12 vol.-% of Cobalt, 12 vol.-% of Fe3Al) are presented. Rotating disks made of niobium carbide bearing hard metals were mated against alumina (99.7%) under unlubricated (dry) unidirectional sliding tests (0,1 m/s to 12,0 m/s; 22°C and 400°C) as well as in oscillation tests (f= 20 Hz, ?x= 0,2 mm, 2/50/98% rel. humidity, n= 105/106 cycles). Microstructure and phase compositions were determined as well. The tribological data obtained were benchmarked with different ceramics, cermets, hard metals and thermally sprayed coatings, where NbC bonded with 8% and 12% Co presented above 8 m/s the lowest wear rates so far in such a benchmark. Binderless NbC (HP-NbC1) and the metal bonded NbCs exhibited low wear rates under dry sliding associated with high P?V load carrying capacities. NbC-based hard metal bonded with 12 vol.-% of Fe3Al resulted in a higher hardness level than for 12 vol.-% cobalt. The tribological profile established revealed a strong position of NbC bearing materials under tribological considerations and for closed tribosystems against established reference tribo-couples.

The 5.6 km Canning Tunnel was constructed to improve water supply from Canning Dam to the Perth metropolitan area. The site area is in the Darling Range which is essentially a laterite-capped plateau-remnant underlain by Archaean granitic rocks, intruded by dolerite. Two arrangements were available. After geotechnical investigations which included geological mapping, seismic refraction geo- physics, diamond drilling and mechanical rock testing, a single tunnel was selected in pre- ference to two short tunnels and a connecting pipeline. The tunnel is hydraulically equivalent to a fully lined tunnel 1.83 m in diameter and 5 580 m long. The alignment diverged from a straight line so that the initial upstream section was almost normal to the contours which allowed for minimal support requirements in a weathered zone. Although steel and con- crete lining was needed at both ends, the main section of the tunnel was unlined except for a concrete floor. A sand and rock trap with a capacity of 46 m3 was constructed near the outlet portal to collect debris and sand down to a size of about 2 mm. Portal excavations were in highly to completely weathered rock which extended 56 m into the tunnel at the upstream end, and 18 m at the downstream end. Members of the Society, it is a very great honor for me to be here today and to have the opportunity of telling you about some things that have been accumulating in the back of my mind for some time. Before attempting to do so, I should acknowledge my debt to the many people who are responsible for my presence here this afternoon. To do this properly, however, would consume much of my allotted time and I will therefore mention only two men, both of whom were directly involved in the discovery of the Henderson ore body. The first of these was Robert Henderson, now dead, who at the time the work was going on was vice president of Western Operations of the Climax Molybdenum Co. Truly, he provided the environment that permitted the exploration program to function effectively, and the deposit appropriately bears his name. The second man I meant to mention was resident geologist at Urad at the time of the Henderson discovery. I think I should explain right here that the Urad ore body and the Henderson ore body, although entirely separate, are closely related deposits, and that both are located at Red Mountain in Clear Creek County, Colo.

Structural analyses of oriented bore core sections from the West Wallsend No.2 Colliery Holding together with investigations in adjac- ent collieries and on the surface delineated structural phenomena. The rocks examined are anisotropic due to strongly developed bedding planes and the presence of penetrative joint planes. Joints, in this context, are regarded as mechanical discontinuities, they are genetically identif- ied wherever possible and their spatial attit- udes are determined and geometrically related to the regional structure. Identifiable anisotropies in the roof- and floor-strata of the Borehole Seam render favour- able mining directions for longwall and bord and pillar layouts.

THIS REPORT give&apos;s the results of a study of the central and south parts of the Cushing oilfield, including a description of the geology, a review of the production history, and estimates of oil reserves available by secondary-recovery methods. Each of the major producing zones of the field is treated separately. The report, which is one of a long series of field studies the Bureau of Mines has conducted over the past 40 years, was prepared to aid operators to increase oil recovery and to help prevent underground waste in the Cushing field, in the State of Oklahoma, and in the United States. The geology and production history are presented not as a review of past behavior of the Cushing field but rather to interpret the possibilities for increased oil recovery by future development of this and similar areas. The field, which is in the northwest corner of Creek County, Okla., was discovered in 1912 and developed during 1913 and 1914. For several years it, was one of the most important areas producing high-grade crude oil in Oklahoma. Although some oil has been recovered from each of 10 separate reservoirs, nearly 98 percent of the total recovery of oil in the area studied was from 4 major producing formations (table 1).
