Gregg Marine, Inc. (headquartered in Signal Hill, California) has recently introduced an innovative seafloor drill system for offshore geotechnical site investigation and seafloor mineral exploration. The system is capable of working in water depths of up to 3,000 meters and is rated to drill to a depth of approximately 150 meters below mudline. The remote operated system integrates established drilling technology with proven Schilling telemetry and controls. The flexible nature of the patented wireline drilling technology enables the use of standard sampling systems (up to PQ-size core and 3? thin-walled tubes) as well as downhole testing systems (including CPT testing, vane shear testing, downhole sensors and borehole geophysical tools). The modular nature of the seabed drill system and the accompanying launch and recovery system (LARS) enables the use of local vessels of opportunity for projects resulting in reduced project costs and improved mobilization responsiveness times. The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P. M. except on holidays. It contains about 70,000 volumes and 90,000 pamphlets, including sets of technical periodicals and publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library, through its Library Service Bureau, can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive especial attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and photographic copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information on the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The tine spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape.

The Pawtucket Tunnel is a 2.2-mi, 30.2-ft diameter CSO storage tunnel in Rhode Island. The primary tunnel is built using a dual-mode open-EPB TBM capable of sealing the face within 120 seconds to manage poor ground and water ingress which is launched from within a SEM starter tunnel. The main tunnel connects to four adits along its alignment, three of which are SEM tunnels and one being a MTBM tunnel. This contribution describes the selection process, potential risks, and requirements for the TBM, as well as the design of the main tunnel, the adits, and the adit-bored tunnel connections.

By its nature, seismology has been a data intensive field since the first digital computers were introduced in the 1950s. The first empirical models were developed in the same period and are still widely used today, for instance, the Gutenberg-Richter frequency-magnitude relationship (Gutenberg and Richter, 1956). Machine learning (ML) methods make it possible to redefine these empirical models using large datasets and examining considerably more parameters, where their significance to the problem being addressed is methodically and repeatably evaluated using robust statistical methods. In this paper we develop a simple logistic model for the short-term prediction of seismic events above a threshold magnitude from a mine’s event catalogue comprising more than a million events with 14 basic parameters from which a pool of over 830 derived parameters was developed, covering a series of 11 precursory time windows. The logistic model was fitted stepwise using SAS with α = 0.025 for both entry and acceptance. 25 variables from the pool met the acceptance criterion. The findings were surprising in that parameters a rock engineer or seismologist might have expected to be the most significant in the logistic model were not; instead, it was an increase in standard deviation of the immediately-prior seismic magnitudes that carried the most weight, followed by the average maximum source displacement and median apparent volume change. These findings make intuitive sense because the increasing scatter of the magnitude shows an increasing number of large events being recorded that could be indicative of instability in the system that could lead to large events. The model is rudimentary and enormous scope exists for more exploration in terms of data pre-processing, model types, and response variable definitions.

Flotation separation is expected to be related to the degree of dispersion of the pulp. For instance, highly aggregated systems may show reduced selectivity, reduced entrainment and increased flotation rate. In an attempt to test the impact of aggregation on flotation, we have taken advantage of the effect of Mg ions. Using combinations of Mg2+ and pH gave a wide variation in aggregation of several Cu-Zn ores (measured by settling rate) and corresponding flotation response was determined by batch tests. The trials were conducted on-site at Louvicourt and Agnico-Eagle. In a majority of cases a similar trend in aggregation and flotation selectivity (grade at given recovery) was observed. At Louvicourt, improved selectivity with increasing aggregation at pH 10.5 was found. At Agnico-Eagle, an analogous association between aggregation and selectivity was observed at pH 11.5. It is suggested that aggregation influences particle entrainment, the increased effective particle size reducing gangue recovery and hence improving selectivity.

Viscosity is one of the most important physicochemical properties during pyrometallurgical operations. In the sub-liquidus regime, an important factor is the presence of suspended solid particles, yet its influence is not well-described in earlier literature, despite the significance of this factor. This project aims to determine the influence of spinel particles (Zn(Al,Fe)2O4) on the rheology of a multiphase synthetic PbO-SiO2-ZnO-Fe2O3-CaO-Al2O3 slag system. Three data sets with a wellcontrolled methodology and three different spinel sizes (small (13 μm), medium (34 μm) and large particles (76 μm)) were published previously, using a custom-built high-temperature rheometer. This study presents an additional data set of slag viscosity measurements, performed using a different apparatus, the Anton Paar FRS 1800, to verify the consistency of the earlier determined viscosity behaviour. Within this data set, no consistent trend could be found between the predicted wt per cent spinel and the relative viscosity. Therefore, additional quenching experiments were conducted to identify the morphology and experimentally determined volume fraction of the spinel particles in the slag. These measurements revealed a difference in spinel size across the samples and corresponding viscosity behaviour, emphasizing the importance of spinel particle size on slag viscosity. Once the spinel size was taken into account, consistent viscosity results (relative apparent viscosity and flow index) were observed across the two devices. This study confirms that, once all parameters affecting slag viscosity are considered, the viscosity behaviour of a heterogeneous slag can be uniquely determined. The resulting optimised slag viscosity models can be used to predict viscosity before processing, addressing relevant phenomena such as slag tapping, slag foaming and copper droplet settlement.

A CBMM aplicou aços microligados ao nióbio de alta resistência mecânica para a fabricação de containers de caminhões que transportam grãos na região do Triângulo Mineiro e Alto Paranaíba, com o objetivo de reduzir o peso desses equipamentos e possibilitar o aumento da carga útil transportada. O novo projeto reduziu em 10% o peso do container e também aumentou seu volume útil de 27 m3 para 29 m3. O investimento teve retorno com apenas 8 dias de operação com o novo projeto transportando arroz. Também foram obtidos ganhos no transporte de milho e soja com o retorno do investimento em 21 e 56 dias de trabalho respectivamente. O trabalho mostra os aços utilizados e as principais alterações nos projetos desses componentes.

As a part of it investigations pertaining to the promotion of safety, the Bureau of Mines is investigating various means, useful for the elimination or mitigation of the explosion hazards of combustible gases encountered in mining and industry. Information has been obtained and a procedure developed whereby the explocibility of many complex, gaseous, combustible atmospheres may be calculated in a simple manner without the necessity of performing laborious laboratory experiments. In a previous publication4/ data were given and a method described whereby the limits of inflammability of gaseous mixtures, including methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and oxygen, could be determined by calculation. The information published in that report enables one to calculate the limits of inflammability of such gases as are liberated by mine fires, gases from explosives, automobile exhaust ran, uses present after mine explosions, blast-furnace gas, and other gases containing part of or all of the above-listed constituents.

There is a sense of geometallurgy being new; a new methodology for mining project development and improved operational strategy. One of the main challenges that any ænewÆ technology faces is a validation of the value and the need to produce case studies. However, producing case studies can often be problematic particularly given the long cycle from mineral deposit project, through feasibility and construction to stabilised operation of a mine.However, the roots of geometallurgy go back quite some time. Successful practices with geometallurgy can be seen from as early as the 1980s. Many times those practices were not called geometallurgy but something else and, in other cases, what can be seen are various components of the geometallurgical ævalue chainÆ.This paper will analyse a selection of published past practices from a geometallurgical perspective to demonstrate the value realised from the application of this methodology. The paper will then make some general comments on where this history of work in geometallurgy has lead us to and what are the challenges today for the geometallurgical effort.CITATION:S R Williams, 2013. Pressure oxidation tests have been conducted by Sherritt for a refractory gold-silver project located in China. The feed contained 39 g/t Au and 970 g/t Ag; the major gold-bearing minerals were pyrite and arsenopyrite. Since the feed contained a significant amount of silver, which can be refractory to cyanide leaching after pressure oxidation due to the formation of argentojarosite, the test program included investigation of methods to enhance silver recovery. The "lime boil" process proved successful and was incorporated into the flowsheet. Gold extraction from the lime boil product solids was 95 to 98%; silver extraction was up to 94%.

"Hecla Limited is nearing completion of the Lucky Friday Mine No.4 shaft located in Mullan, ID. The shaft is collared at the 4940 level of the mine and will have a final mine level depth of 8620, or 9,590 feet below the surface. After reaching the 7400 mine level the shaft encountered ground deformation higher then allowed for in the design for a circular shaft excavation and concrete lining. This additional ground deformation required portions of the shaft concrete liner to be reinforced with frameless, steel liner plate. To eliminate the installation of the liner plate from the remaining shaft development, the design of the shaft excavation starting at the 7650 mine level was changed to an elliptical cross section based on the overall stress field orientation as well as the orientation of the structure of the host rock surrounding the shaft. The elliptical cross section was instrumented to confirm the shaft excavation and lining was performing as designed. This design change has allowed the shaft to continue to the planned 8620 mine level without the need to install liner plate in the shaft or change the overall functionality of the shaft or the Lucky Friday life of mine plan.INTRODUCTION Hecla’s Lucky Friday Mine is a deep, underground producer of silver, lead and zinc in the Coeur d’Alene mining district of northern Idaho (Figure 1). Primary access into the mine is via the Silver Shaft, a 5.5-m (18-ft) diameter, concrete lined shaft sunk to an original depth of 1,890-m (6,200-ft). Current production is from the Gold Hunter vein system, approximately 1,525-m (5,000-ft) northwest of the Silver Shaft.Lucky Friday’s #4-Shaft is a 5.5-m (18-ft) finished diameter, internal shaft, or winze, being sunk to the north of the Gold Hunter vein system, from the mine’s 4760 level, 1,743-m (5,720-ft) below the surface, to the 8620 level, 2,923-m (9,590-ft) below the surface. The shaft is designed to provide access to the deep, high-grade zones of the Gold Hunter in order to increase the mine’s production and operational life. Design and engineering began in 2006, with construction starting in the fourth quarter of 2009."

An inducer-type pump, capable of injecting dry coal into a hydraulic transport pipeline has been developed and installed in a specially designed and fabricated slurry injector vehicle. The full scale prototype injector system can deliver up to 11 ton/min of coal into an 8-in pipeline t pressures up to 95 lb/in2. The Helical Inducer Injector operates on centrifugal principles with flow passing axially through helical pitched conical rotor. Water is delivered to the pump through an annular slot at the atmospheric pressure coal inlet. The spinning rotor maintains an air-core vortex of water which pressurizes the discharge housing. A screw feeds coal through the open inlet into this vortex. The inner radius of the vortex contracts as pressure is increased, giving a limiting maximum pressure which is proportional to the square of the rotor speed. Below this limit, flow rate, discharge pressure, und rotor speed re independent variables. The self-powered, 4 -in high slurry injector vehicle follows and receives ROM coal from a continuous miner, reduces the top size to 3-in, and delivers the sized coal to the injector feed screw for slurry formation and pumps it through a mobile hose attached to the vehicle's outby end.

Two modes of potential loss of oxime extractants in liquid extraction processes for the extraction of copper have been studied. In loss "by chemical degradation, two mechanisms of acid hydrolysis are possible, some reagents degrade primarily in the organic bulk phase, Others at the interface between the organic phase-- phase protects the oxime but salts added to the aqueous acid phase can promote the rate of degradation. The reagents reported on are the LIX series (Henkel Cpn), SME529 (Shell Chem.Co.) and P5100 (Acorga) Loss by organic entrainment in the aqueous phase leaving mixer-settlers has also been studied, parameters investigated including impeller/tank geometry and the phase inlet arrangements. The consequences of extractant loss by the above mechanisms...are commented upon. They include the direct economic cost, the possible environmental problems and the implications for downstream operations such, as electrowinning.

?It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.? Charles Darwin. Canada?s mining and exploration companies have evolved over the past century from essentially a pick-and-shovel industry to a high-tech industrial sector. This evolution has occurred in fits and starts, and has been driven by the shifting environment of economic, technical and social opportunities and pressures in Canada. As labour costs have gone up, and labour availability has gone down, the industry has evolved more efficient processes. As mineral prices have increased or fallen, the industry has evolved either by expanding or shrinking production, or by changing processes to adapt to the newly prevailing conditions. As stringent environmental protection legislation has been implemented, the industry has adapted accordingly, and has substantially changed its mindset to incorporate sustainability into its way of doing business. These changes have occurred over a number of decades, and have usually occurred as the industry?s reluctant response to pressures it couldn?t evade. This model mirrors the classical paradigm of natural selection where evolution is driven by pressures external to the organism (or organization) ? change occurs to the degree necessary for survival and prosperity, but generally no further. In recent years a new paradigm has started to come into play in Canadian mining and exploration. Rather than only a reactive response to the external economic, social and technical factors, groups within the mining community are becoming proactive in developing strategies for future adaptive change. Instead of each against the other, they are developing more sophisticated paradigms where they can both compete against (such as in marketing) and cooperate with (such as for tech development) their fellow organizations. Most importantly, they are seeing individual and national advantage in a collaborative Canadian approach to address the advantages of overseas competitors who often have lower labour costs, lesser environmental standards, or more accessible markets and transportation. This has translated into large-scale mining community support for the Canada Mining Innovation Council, and its programs in exploration, mining, processing, HR development, energy and environmental stewardship. This new paradigm is adaptive to the current environment but is substantially different from the older way of doing business in two major ways ? it is based on a collaborative approach to competitive advantage, and it is highly proactive rather than reactive. All the programs have their priorities determined principally by the mining and exploration companies, whose first obligation is to determine the long-term research priorities of the industry as a whole, rather than for their individual companies. Only after industry consensus on priorities does the research community become engaged in the implementation of specific projects to address those identified priorities. A goal of the program is to effectively create a virtual mining research laboratory, by engaging all the major research centres in the country. This approach is being actively adopted by much of the Canadian mining community, and argues well for the adaptability and long-term survival of mining in Canada.

The claims now held by Mount Wright Iron Mines Co. Limited were acquired by staking in 1956, 1957 and 1958, i.e., some time after the major deposits of the Quebec Cartier Mining and Normanvi!le Mining Co. (formerly Quebec Cobalt & Exploration Ltd.) were already discovered and partly outlined. The choice of the location of the Mount Wright hold-ings was governed simply by the -availability of ground still open to staking and by its proximity to properties held by major iron companies. Mount Wright Iron Mines had no previous knowledge of the geology and no aeromagnetic results were available to it to guide the choice of areas to be staked. In order to explore the newly ac-quired claims it was decided to make a grid of widely spaced magnetic profiles on the ground rather than use aeromagnetics. This afforded the possibility of making some geological observations simultaneously with the geophysical measurements.

The delay time for single crystals of iron, zinc, and pre-strained aluminum was measured under conditions of high-speed deformation. The delay time of aluminum was found to be affected by the orientation of the crystal. Under the dynamic conditions employed, tile calculated "activated volume" term appears to be very small for the three metals studied. IN a previous paper,1 it was shown that under dynamic testing conditions at 78° K, there was a delayed yield in single crystals of aluminum and copper which had been cold-worked prior to testing. The experimental results also indicated that the delay-time effect was not due to the interaction of dislocations with impurity atoms or vacancies, but rather to a dislocation-dislocation interaction since aluminum which has not been prestrained shows no delay-time phenomenon. In this paper, some data are reported on the effects of orientation on the delay time of aluminum single crystals; the delay time of zinc single crystals saturated with nitrogen and the delay time of iron single crystals also were measured. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Aluminum (99.997 pct) and zinc (99.999 pct) crystals, 1/2 in. in diam and 8 in. long were grown by the Bridgman technique. The iron single crystal was supplied by Dr. R. Maddin. The zinc crystals containing nitrogen were prepared by melting high-purity zinc in a graphite crucible and the nitrogen was introduced by additions of ammonium chloride. The liquid zinc was then drawn up into glass tubes of 1/2 in. diam and allowed to solidify. The rods were cooled to room temperature before the transfer to the mold for conversion into single crystals. The orientation of all specimens was determined by the Laue' back-reflection technique, Fig. 2 and Table I. To prepare for the delay-time measurements, the crystals were cut with a fine jewelers saw and the ends carefully machined. The specimens then were electrolytic ally polished to remove the cold-worked metal, mounted in a special fixture and hand-lapped. As a final step, the crystals were annealed in evacuated tubes. Specimens of aluminum crystals, Nos. 24 and 26, were compressed 0.5 and 2 pct, respectively, in the direction of the later impact. The zinc specimens were aged at 50°C for 15 min, In the case of iron, only two specimens could be obtained. To obtain sufficient data, it was necessary to resort to a reaging treatment. After each delay-time test, the specimens were aged at 65° C for 100 min. This treatment, according to Clark,2 is sufficient to restore the original delay time. It is believed that although the specimens were plastically deformed approximately 10-4 pct, after each test the delay-time values are reliable. The delay-time measurements were made in an apparatus similar to that described previously.' Single crystals approximately 1 in. long and having a diameter of 1/2 in. were placed in a pendulum which consisted of a bar 1/2 in. in diam and 8 ft long, designed with a crystal holder to accommodate the specimen at low temperatures. The crystal was held at a position 2 ft from the front part of the pendulum. This portion of the apparatus was supported on a fine molybdenum wire. Foi feito um estudo do comportamento termomecânico deste aço através de ensaios de torção a quente isotérmicos e comparados os resultados com os modelos matemáticos microestruturais da literatura ajustados para o aço em questão. Determinau-se a tensão e deformação de pico, tensão e deformação crítica e o amaciamento do material e compados com os modelos utilizados.

A rigorous methodology for prediction of flotation plant performance is presented, which is based on a standardised batch flotation test called the MFT. The work is part of the FLEET program, developed by MinnovEX with the support of seven large mining firms. The methodology is divided into three key steps: direct measurement of the kinetics of true flotation in the pulp, independent of hydraulic entrainment and other froth effects in the batch cell; benchmarking of the industrial plant over a broad range of ore types and operation conditions; and model calibration to describe froth effects in the plant, with a minimal number of parameters. To date, the methodology has been applied with success at several industrial plants, encompassing copper, gold, nickel, iron, lead, zinc and coal operations. This paper includes a description of the laboratory testwork procedure and scale-up to full industrial circuits. Examples of industrial application are also presented.

Assessing the occurrence of natural ground-water recharge at mine and mill waste disposal sites may be crucial to addressing regulatory agency concerns regarding the potential impact of waste seepage on ground-water resources. Recharge has been shown to occur even in semi-arid areas where annual lake evaporation exceeds precipitation. Permanent storage of waste seepage in the unsaturated zone is not to be expected if recharge occurs under natural conditions. Establishing the direction and rate of fluid movement in the vadose zone by field measurements is an important element that should be included in the site selection process.

Tamano Smelter of Hibi Kyodo Smelting Co., Ltd. started its operation adopting the Flash Smelting Furnace with Furnace Electrodes (FSFE). Thereafter, it developed a coke combustion technology based on C() concentration control, which made possible a low cost and high productivity operation without using electrodes. However, increase of treated concentrates and upgrading of matte grade for production expansion started to cause difficulties in operation control with then existing operation control system. This paper outlines recent improvements for stable operation of the Tamano Type Flash Smelting Furnace (T-FSF), such as computer aided operation guide system.
