The Marangoni effect is an important phenomenon where a surface tension gradient drives liquid towards high surface tension regions. Temperature gradient, evaporation, disparity of viscosity, and surface roughness and topography are all significant factors that can affect this thermo-capillary migration. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of micro-groove patterns on the migration of paraffin oil, and obtain a well-designed texture of micro-grooves to prevent the thermo-capillary migration. Patterns of micro-grooves with differing orientations and geometric parameters were fabricated on the surface of SUS 316 stainless steel substrates. Experiments on the migration behavior with different viscosities of paraffin oils were carried out various temperature gradients. The experimental phenomena indicated that the surface with the micro-grooves perpendicular or parallel to the temperature gradient have a strong impact on the migration performance of paraffin oil. Micro-grooves perpendicular to the temperature gradient exhibited extraordinary slower migration velocity than that of the parallel one. Width and depth of micro-grooves had an obvious influence on the behavior of temperature-driven migration and detail discussions on the effects of these geometric parameters were carried out.

Automated mineralogical analysis of platinum group minerals (PGM), using the mineral liberation analyser, provides information used to understand flotation efficiency, primarily from a PGM liberation and association standpoint. To date, however, there is no consistent understanding regarding PGM speciation and its impact on floatability. Previous studies of PGM from UG2 ores concluded that a larger dataset is needed from which the various parameters can be modelled. Parameters on telluride, arsenide, sulfurarsenide and alloy species need to be integrated to fully understand the impact of PGM speciation on flotation, and for this, ores other than PGE-sulfide-rich UG2 must be assessed. Flotation rougher rate tests were performed on feed samples from two Platreef ores to determine the flotation response of individual liberated PGM species. This was achieved through automated mineralogical analysis of feed, rougher concentrates and tails. Based on 1529 liberated PGM grains assessed over the circuit for two Platreef ores, preliminary results show that PGM speciation, species grain size and competition from gangue appear to influence floatability in an ‘optimised’ laboratory environment. "Location and Transportation FacilitiesTHE BEAVERLODGE area of North Saskatchewan is on the north side of lake Athabasca, 500 air miles northeast of Edmonton.The main Eldorado operation and townsite are on the north •side of Beaverlodge lake, which is immediately north of lake Athabasca and is separated from it by only a mile long portage at Lodge bay. The once famous town of Goldfields. Saskatchewan, and the Box property of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, are located on lake Athabasca nine mines from Beaverlodge townsite.Previously, all Eldorado freight was delivered by barge at the Lodge Bay portage, hauled across the portage, and across Beaverlodge lake by small Northern Transportation Company barges, which involved many handlings.In 1952 the port of 'Bushell' was established at Black bay. This is a particularly snug harbour, well protected from the main body of the lake and with good foundations for docking facilities. A Butler building, 300 ft. by 60 ft., and tank farms provide storage at the port. A •road from Bushell to the main Beaverlodge operation, a distance of twelve miles through rugged terrain, was built by the Saskatchewan Government. The cost was shared by the Saskatchewan Government, the Federal Government, and Eldorado and other mining companies.Along this road are located the properties of several enterprising mining companies and near the midpoint lies the ambitious budding town of Uranium. This road has made portaging unnecessary and palletized freight loaded at Waterways, Alta., is now loaded directly on trucks at Bushell and delivered to the point of consumption."

Blasting operations play a pivotal role in the overall economics of opencast mines. The blasting subsystem affects all the other associated subsystems, ie loading, transport, crushing and milling operations. Fragmentation control through effective blast design and its effect on productivity is a challenging job for the practicing blasting engineer due to inadequate knowledge of actual explosive energy released in the borehole, effect of varying initiation practice in blast design and its effect on explosive energy release characteristic. This paper describes the result of a systematic study on the impact of blast design parameters on rock fragmentation at two mines in India. Both the mines use draglines and shovel-dumper combination for removal of overburden. Despite its pivotal role in controlling the overall economics of a mining operation, the expected blasting performance is often judged almost exclusively on the basis of poorly defined parameters such as powder factor and is often qualitative, which results in a very subjective assessment of blasting performance. Such an approach is a very poor substitute for accurate assessment of explosive and blasting performance. Forty-seven blasts were conducted with varying blast designs and charging patterns and their impact on the rock fragmentation are documented. A high-speed camera was deployed to record the detonation sequences of the blasts. Laboratory and small-scale continuous pilot-plant investigations made at the Tucson Metallurgy Research Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines have demonstrated that the copper segregation process is applicable to the treatment of oxidized and mixed oxide-sulfide copper ores regardless of the gangue constituents. The process comprises heating the ore to a temperature of 750° C. with small quantities- of sodim chloride and coke to produce metallic copper, which then is recovered by flotation. Tests were made on' 23 copper ores of different types containing 0.8 to 5 percent Cu, .The copper recoveries ranged from 73 to 96 percent in concentrates assaying 10 to 62 percent Cu, depending on the grade and type of ore, The direct operating cost for a 1,000-ton-per-day furnace and flotation plant is estimated at about- $3 per ton of ore.

Over the last 25 years, through adversity and a growing level of risk mitigation, Australian Longwall mines have been using higher and higher capacity cable bolts for secondary support. A recent survey revealed 85% of Australian longwall cable bolts are a 70 tonne capacity pre-tensioned hollow post groutable system. Mines avoiding pumping cementitious grouts are sometimes using pre-tensioned resin encapsulated solid cable bolts of over 90 tonne capacity. Results from various industry and University research has led to manufacturer's fine tuning the construction of their cable bolts. A review of this research explains how smooth wire construction is now dominant. Aggressive shear has also led to some mines using 8 tonnes pre-tension instead of the previous common 20 tonnes pre-tension. Lower pre-tension acceptance is now leading to a greater use of threaded cable bolt end fittings, these are tensioned to 8 tonne using the drill motor torque. A recent development is the TEX cable bolt, a slim line threaded end fitting that fits with the drill hole like a standard rock bolt. This cable is being installed at the coal face as primary support off bolter-miners. The laboratory and in-situ testing of the TEX cable is presented. In a bid to improve gateroad development rates and ground support in the last several years, a 100 tonne tensile capacity Goliath cable system was developed. The latest development in resin anchored solid cables is a 110 tonne capacity cable bolt, with laboratory and in-situ testing results presented.

"The present paper focuses on the action mechanism of anionic polymer dispersants in dense Si3N4 and SiC suspension. An atomic force microscope (AFM) was used to determine the relationship between the macroscopic suspension viscosity and the microscopic adsorbed structure of a polymer dispersant at the solid / liquid interface. The surface interactions within the suspensions were analyzed in various dispersant pH and additive conditions. The addition of an anionic polymer dispersant decreased Si3N4 and SiC suspension viscosity and increased electro-steric repulsion force on the non-oxide surface in solution at pH> 6 which was the isoelectric point of the materials. It was assumed that the increase of repulsive force was promoted by a hydrophobic adsorption of polymer dispersant on the non-oxide particles.IntroductionThe surface of silicon nitride and silicon carbide powders in a water suspension system has quite a complex molecular structure. In the case of Si3N4, hydroxyl and ammonium groups form on the surface and the pH of the suspension is increased from neutral to about 10 due to surface oxidation. The particle surface is negatively charged in alkaline solutions (pH=10), because the isoelectric point of silicon nitride exists in the pH range from 5 to 6. However, in spite of charging the negative surface charge, an anionic polymeric dispersant is generally used for the reduction in slurry viscosity.In dense SiC suspensions, an anionic polymer dispersant is generally used in order to disperse aggregates and reduce the suspension viscosity, too. Since an anionic dispersant is used in alkaline solutions higher than the isoelectric point of silicon carbide, the dispersant adsorbed on the negative charged surfaces of SiC.Few researchers have discussed and estimated the adsorption mechanism and structure of anionic polymeric dispersants on silicon nitride and silicon carbide surfaces. This is because it is difficult to observe the structure and measure the interaction at the solid/liquid interfuce directly. However, new developments in surface-force measurement technology have enabled the determination of non-DLVO type interaction for analyzing aggregation behavior2. The use of the AFM for analyzing the effects of various surfactants and co-polymers on colloidal dispersions and solid surfaces has also begun to rapidly expand to characterize the interaction between solid surfaces."

"MgCl2 brines present a number of potential advantages for the processing of saprolite ores for nickel production. With a chloride system it is economically requisite to recover hydrochloric acid, which can be performed in a more energy efficient manner by precipitation and subsequent decomposition, as compared with conventional pyrohydrolysis. In addition, concentrated MgCl2 solutions enhance the activity of acid used, allow atmospheric leaching at elevated temperature and inhibit magnesium dissolution, which reduces acid consumption and increases metal selectivity. Leaching and iron control experiments have been conducted in concentrated MgCl2 brines, up to 4.5 m, to determine the most amenable process conditions. INTRODUCTIONChloride metallurgy has received an increasing amount of attention in recent years, especially with respect to the treatment of nickel laterites. Although the limonitic fraction can sometimes be economically treated by High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL), acid-consumption problems are encountered with the higher magnesium content of the saprolite fraction. As magnesium does not hydrolyze under HPAL conditions, as iron and aluminum do, any sulphuric acid used to leach magnesium is subsequently neutralized and wasted. In addition, this magnesium must later be disposed of in some fashion, further complicating the process. The most common method used to process saprolite is the Rotary Kiln-Electric Furnace (RKEF). This uses a kiln to dry and preferentially reduce nickel, before sending the calcine to an electric furnace. Although nickel recoveries are high, and the problems of acid consumption are avoided, the capital and energy costs associated with this process are high (de Bakker, 2011).The problems outlined above have led to the investigation of an atmospheric chloride process for the treatment of saprolite ores. The use of a chloride system presents a number of advantages, but also a few limitations. Metal chlorides tend to be very soluble, with a few notable exceptions (silver, mercury and lead), allowing for smaller processing equipment through more concentrated solutions. This solubility also serves to reduce the potential for scale formation. In addition, a hydrochloric acid leach is more aggressive than a comparable sulphuric acid system, and the activity of the hydrogen ion can be augmented by further chloride addition (Peek, 2011). This activity augmentation in concentrated chloride systems, first reported by Jansz, has repeatedly been referenced as a motivating factor behind chloride hydrometallurgy (Jansz, 1983; Harris and Magee, 2003; Harris et al., 2004; Demopoulos et al., 2008; McDonald and Whittington, 2008; Demopoulos, 2011; Peek, 2011; Verhulst and Lakshmanan, 2011). This activity increase allows a similar amount of acid to perform more in a concentrated solution than in a dilute solution, decreasing overall acid requirements. As such, much focus has been placed on leaching in concentrated chloride systems, or brines, using calcium, magnesium or sodium as the cation (McDonald and Whittington, 2008)."

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 419 natural gas samples from 22 States collected during calendar year 1964 as part of a continuous survey of the United States for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863/ and 576.4/ Six previous publications have been made to present the results of 6,293 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines, Helium Activity, prior to 1964. A series of field experiments investigated the perfonnance of fine mesh curtain screens which were used to suppress coal dust in a transport roadway of a New South Wales colliery. Four types of screens were tested under dry and wet conditions. The screen materials consisted of flyscreen and garden "shadecloth" with single and double membranes of both materials. Personal dust samplers coupled to dust cyclones and filtration cassettes were used to collect the respirable and total components of dusts respectively. The procedure used for locating the samplers upstream and downstream of the screen was based on the roadway air velocity profiles. The number and configuration of the water sprays impinging onto these screens had significant influence on the results. The study showed that wet double layered flyscreen is the most effective of the four configurations tested.

Over the past two decades, declining ore body grades and increased operating and construction costs have provided an incentive for the development of progressively larger flotation machines. As a result, the 1.7-2.8 m3 (60-100 cu ft) flotation machine of the 1950's and 1960's is being rapidly replaced by large volume machines. The result has been improved flotation machine specific capacity (tph processed per sq ft of floor space); specific power (hp per tph processed); and process control simplicity. The recent development and satisfactory plant evaluation of the 28 m3 (1000 cu ft) flotation machine allows economic and operating advantages in high tonnage mill applications. Some principles of mechanically induced air flotation and the development of the large 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft) flotation machine are reviewed here. Performance evaluation in beneficiating metalliferous ores-copper, zinc, and iron-is also given and recently completed plant results provided. Mining lower grade ore bodies results in the need to process increased tonnage in the concentrator. This greater tonnage requires more individual flotation machines, unless individual machine capacity, or cell volume, is increased. As the ore processing rate of the concentrator increases, the benefits of progressively larger individual cells in the flotation section become more significant. The accompanying figure illustrates the advantages of a larger flotation machine. In the figure, the number of machines in the rougher-scavenger section is related to the plant tonnage for three sizes of flotation machine: 8.5 m3 (300 cu ft), 14.2 m3 (500 cu ft), 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft). The 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft) flotation machine results in 95 fewer machines, compared to the 8.5 m3 (300 cu ft) machine at 45.4 kt/d (50,000 stpd) feed. The flotation cell reduction is, of course, doubled at a plant production rate of 90.7 kt/d (100,000 stpd). Using fewer flotation machines saves floor space. The 14.2 m3 (500 cu ft) and the 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft) machines result in a floor area reduction, relative to the 8.5 (300 cu ft) machine requirements, of 134.7 and 418.1 m2 (1450 and 4500 sq ft), respectively, for the 45.4 kt/d (50,000 stpd) rate and 269.4 and 836.1 m2 (2900 and 9000 sq ft), respectively, for the 90.7 kt/d (100,000 stpd) rate. In addition, flotation practice has shown that the "specific power intensity"-power per unit cell volume-is less for increased cell size. This results in a power draw reduction, for the rougher-scavenger circuit, of between 552 and 686 kW (740 and 920 hp) for the 14.2 and 28.3 m3 (500 and 1000 cu ft) machines, respectively, when processing 90.7 kt/d (100,000 stpd). Fewer cells improve machine control and simplify maintenance needs while reducing floor space and power requirements. These are tangible incentives for the development of large flotation machines for high tonnage applications. Flotation Principles The accompanying figure shows how key hydrodynamic regions influence the performance of a mechanically induced air flotation machine. Air is induced into the fluid from the top of the cell, due to the mechanical action of a rotating impeller. The impeller circulates the liquid, or pulp, from the bottom of the cell. The result of these dual flow paths is the mixing of the two fluids and one solid phase in the highly agitated region where physical contact between the air bubbles, and the solid particles to be floated, is accomplished. "Developing markets for western metallurgical coal have continued to stimulate considerable exploration activity in the Rocky Mountain foothills and to influence major segments of a wide-ranging carbonization R&D pro-gram. Adjunct studies have included expanded petrographie investigations.Coal preparation has• been principally directed toward utilization of prepared small coal and was, like much of the year's combustion work, strongly influenced by concern over atmospheric pollution. "Koman dam is one of most important high dams in Drin River Cascade. Safety of these dam is very important not only in power production but also in social and environmental aspects connected with vital activity of local people living in downstream of Drini River and in economic development of the country. In December 2014, during the rehabilitation works on some protection measures at the downstream dam toe, a considerable amount of water leakage emerged from the dam toe. This was noticed even before, but its amount and physical-chemical properties were not evaluated. In order to study the origin and flow direction of this water leakage, KESH sh.a. (Albanian Power Corporation) realized Geophysical and Hydro chemical surveys, turbidity and flow measurements and respective analyses of them. Geophysical survey consist in Apparent Resistivity surveys and Self Potential survey. The survey was done in 3 lines using Resistivity “Real Section” technique. Results are plotted in Sections and plan maps of resistivity and SP parameter. There are defined possible leakage areas and the main flow directions are defined. Also, there is done a hydro chemical analyse. Nine water samples were taken from the different places as Komani lake, service galleries of dam, dam toe and two karst springs which were analysed for both physical-chemical parameters and isotopic composition of O-18 and D. The attained analytical data found that water from the dam toe leakages shows the same chemical signature and isotopic composition of O-18 and D as the water from the lake, thus confirming the hydraulic connection between them.Also, There is done the analyse of water leakage turbidity and amount of this leakage"

In a recent paper [1], the present authors discussed calculated energy consumption numbers in copper sulphide concentrate smelting for four different smelting technologies. For the present study, from among these technologies, they selected the Noranda/Teniente continuous bath smelting followed by Peirce Smith (PS) converting route to investigate the impact on total energy requirement of some key process variations, such as tuyere injection of dry concentrate vs. slingering of wet concentrate over the molten bath, continuous converting vs. conventional batch PS converting and commercially proven slag cleaning alternatives. In their calculations, the authors used the same thermochemical model and methodology used in their earlier paper. This approach to explore plant design options provides an interesting basis for evaluating flowsheet modifications that could lead to significant copper smelting energy savings. The METSIM software was used in the present paper to carry out heat and mass balance computations for 8 different flowsheet configurations. The results are presented and discussed in the paper with respect to copper recoveries, energy requirements and CO2 emissions.

The K.T. Dome Mine in Owen and Henry Counties, Ky., has been operated intermittently under several different owners since the early nineteen hundreds. No record of total production is available, but it is said that during 1943 and 1944, while being operated by the Twin Valley Mining Co., 30 cars of zinc concentrates and 10 cars of lead concentrates were shipped. The vein can be traced for about 10 miles along the strike from Lockport, Henry County, to Big Twin Creek in Owen County. It pinches and swells both vertically and horizontally and is reported to average 20 inches in width. In order to develop additional reserves on the property, the Bureau of Mines drilled four holes on the south extension of the vein. Drilling disclosed that the vein dips to the west on the south side of the Kentucky River and is continuous along the strike and in depth. However, the extent of mineralization in the vein varies widely.

New erosion, corrosion resistant metal, ceramic, and polymer composite technologies are being developed and marketed by Alanx Products L.P. for use in hydrocyclones, pumps, valves, and other applications in mining and minerals processing. This paper will present an overview of the ceramic/metal composite material system and properties developed, which include excellent erosion/ corrosion resistance. Wear data will be shown from a variety of laboratory tests in dry and wet conditions, in aqueous neutral and corrosive environments. Comparisons will be made with a variety of competitive materials currently used in the industries sited. Data will also be presented on field tests with pumps and hydrocyclones in hard rock mining and other abrasive/corrosive environments. Field data from North and South America, as well as Australian mining applications will be highlighted.

Iron and steel production is responsible for approximately 6.3 per cent of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Direct reduction of iron with hydrogen is a potential route for decarbonising the iron and steel industry. Extensive small-scale laboratory experiments have been performed to test the feasibility of hydrogen-direct reduction of iron ores sourced from diverse geographical locations. However, test results from the batch reduction of small-sample do not necessarily translate to continuous commercial-scale processes. Establishing a small-scale continuous test reactor for H2- DRI process is challenging, requiring substantial resources and investment. The limited availability of small-scale reactors that enable testing under relevant conditions has become a major obstacle for H2-DRI development, leaving a big gap between laboratory success and proof of commercial feasibility. Here, we report on the recent commissioning of a continuous counter-flow vertical shaft reactor, which has a processing capacity of 6 kg/hr iron ore pellets at up to 100 NL/min H2 flow. We believe this to currently be the largest H2-DRI facility in the Southern Hemisphere. In this talk, we will discuss the design and construction journey for this reactor, starting from the initial system design to the initial demonstration of H2 reduction of titanomagnetite ironsand pellets. This reactor now enables a range of research capacities, including the validation of laboratory results on a larger scale with practical operational variables, feasibility assessment of hydrogen direct reduction of different iron ores on a commercial scale; identification of scalability, sticking, and other potential issues before building a full-scale plant; and a viable solution for producing small-quantity DRIs for downstream melting investigations. Overall, this new research facility offers significant benefits for assisting the transformation of iron and steel production to a more sustainable and green industry.

Cargas a granel, incluindo finos de minério de ferro, devem ser embarcadas de acordo com as diretrizes acordadas entre os membros da Organização Marítima Internacional (IMO). Uma medida de segurança crítica é o Limite de Umidade Transportável (TML), exigido para cargas do Grupo A (cargas que têm tendência à liquefação). Diversos acidentes com navios envolvendo finos de minério de ferro da India, cuja causa suspeita-se ser a liquefação da carga, trouxeram à atenção o tema do TML de finos de minério de ferro. Um trabalho extenso de pesquisa foi desenvolvido pelos principais produtores de minério de ferro da Austrália e do Brasil para dar suporte à IMO no desenvolvimento de normas para o embarque desse tipo de material. Com essa finalidade, mineradoras patrocinaram o projeto AMIRA P1097, que foi conduzido pela TUNRA Bulk Solids (TBS) e o Centre for Bulk Solids and Particulate Technology (CBSPT), CSIRO e a Universidade de Auckland, com a gestão do projeto sendo feita pela Creative Process Innovation, a fim de estabelecer uma abordagem modificada de testes de TML específica para finos de minério de ferro. Esse estudo deu suporte aos resultados dos testes e conclusões do Technical Working Group do IMO, que publicou suas conclusões e descobertas em Setembro de 2013.

The increasing size of flotation cells as the use of flotation has increased is traced from the first United States application of the process in Montana in 1911 through the following eight decades, using data from the Taggart handbooks (1927) and (1945), from the SME Handbook (1984), and from recent manufacturers' catalogues and other sources for the 1980s and 1990s. With the earliest mechanical cells less than 1 m3 (359) in volume and the largest now available at 200 m3 (7,000ft3), three requirements are necessary: 1) demonstration of advantages in replacing smaller volume by larger volume cells; 2) estimating power requirements, impeller dimensions, and operating rpm by correlation equations; 3) considering effects of using larger cells, in necessarily much shorter rows, on process kinetics. The resulting seven tables that address these problems are presented, and their implications discussed.
