The energy problem of the U. S; was emphasized by the oil embargo of late 1973 and early 1974 and it seemed for a time that the Federal Government, under pressure from the general public, might take some corrective action. However, this was not the case. With the gasoline lines gone and an apparent plentiful supply of petroleum products, public concern quickly dissipated., This country is more vulnerable to an oil embargo today than we were in 1973-1974 and this fact should be of concern to all our people. Since 1968, we have used oil and natural gas at a much more rapid rate than we have been able to find new domestic sources; thus, there is an increasing gap between domestic production and consumption and we have filled the gap with ever increasing oil' imports. These imports have increased at an alarming rate in the recent past, some 58 percent in 1976 compared with 1975. Imports are nearing 8 million barrels per day. Then, by applying some simple arithmetic, at $12 per barrel, the resulting trade deficit is $96 million per day or $35 billion per year. Obviously, this cannot be tolerated by our economy over a long period of time. Historically, we have shifted from one fuel to another as is shown in this slide. In 1850 about 90 percent of our fuel requirements came from direct combustion of wood, by 1900 we shifted to coal for 70 percent of our fuel, and now about 78 percent of fuel requirements comes from oil and natural gas. The difference is that the previous shifts were voluntary and the one facing us now is of necessity.

Dry air classification is a well-known technique used for decades in the cement industry to separate material in the size range of 0.01-1.0 mm. Additionally, in corresponding dry grinding circuits with effective machines such as High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR), the energy consumption can be reduced compared to wet applications. These dry systems are not state of the art in minerals processing plants, but first prototypes have been installed and an increasing number of projects are starting to evaluate this option. One challenge in this field is the mineral composition of ores, which have, by far, a higher variety in density and size than those of cement. High density particles such as iron- containing ones have higher settling rates than low density silica particles of the same size. The main question to answer in this paper is how to evaluate this effect, so a quantitative method using Mineral Liberation Analyses was developed to calculate two-dimensional partition curves. Additional statistical analyses allow for isolation and quantifying the interaction of density and size, enabling engineers to consider this effect for the sizing of process plants. "Open steel pipe piles are used for various applications in costal engineering, port structures and increasingly important for offshore structures. During the installation of open steel pipe piles the formation of a plug has an influence on the installation process of the pile and also on the final bearing capacity. The formation of the plug depends on different factors, e.g. the pile diameter and the installation method. This paper starts with a structured overview about analytical methods (API, EAP-EAU, UWA-05, HKU-12, Modified API) to calculate the axial bearing capacity of open steel pipe piles. The numerical simulation of the installation process of open steel pipe piles has to fulfill high demands, i.e. to accurately represent the penetration of the pile inside the soil, the formation of the plug and also the stresses and strains during the installation. A numerical back analysis of a comprehensive field test, using the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) method and a hypoplastic constitutive model for sand, reveals the stresses and displacements of the soil and of the piles. The analysis provides a comprehensive understanding of soilpile interaction.INTRODRUCTIONThe particular difficulty in the numerical simulation of plug formation, is that the effect of plugging inside open ended steel pipe piles has not been fully investigated. In scientific papers different approaches are documented to explain this phenomenon. Some are based on in-situ tests and others are based on numerical simulations. One of the challenges is to determine the end bearing capacity and shaft friction of the steel pipe pile. Different approaches have been developed over the years to determine them e.g. from Randolph et. al. (1991, 1994) and Paik et. al. (2003). Recent approaches are the ICP-05 Method (Jardine 2005), the UWA-05 Method (Lehane 2005) and the HKU-12 Method (Yu & Yang 2012a). A comparison of some methods can be found in Schneider et al. (2010). A plug inside an open steel pipe pile can be visualized as a spatial bracing of soil between the inner surfaces of the pile, cf. Lüking (2010).. However according to Lüking & Kempfert (2012) this bracing only exists for the height in the end of the pile equal to twice its diameter.To identify a plug inside a pile, there are different measurable parameters. One parameter is the development of stresses around the pile during and after its installation. Henke (2013) measured the inand outside horizontal stresses at the pile tip during the installation. The results showed higher stresses on the inside compared to the outside. To validate his measurements he performed a numerical back-analysis of the measured installation process and got matching results."

"The particle size distribution characteristics of ground product can influence the quality of the classification overflow and the next beneficiation indexes in an ore concentrator. Usually, the size distribution of ground product is considered to be determined by that of new ball mill feed. However, based on large amounts of data from industrial grinding circuit surveys, this paper has clearly shown that the size distribution of ground product should be determined by the size characteristics from classification underflow unless the circulating load was small, because the new feed is an important component and occupy a dominant position of mixed ore from belt feed and classification underflow. On the other hand, the correlation coefficient of the size distribution between ground product and classification underflow can be more than 0.99 when the relevance principle and its method are used. Meanwhile, their P80 value also keeps a synchronous correlation. The greater the capacity of classification underflow is, the higher the correlation of size distribution between the ground product and the mixed feed is. Furthermore, the correlation coefficient of the size distribution between ground product and classification overflow which is from primary or secondary can be 0.96. It is another discovery that the correlation coefficient is related to the type of classifier. The coefficient of size distribution of overflow and underflow from hydrocyclone is superior to that of spiral classifier, which can explain the reason why the hydrocyclone is widely used to replace the spiral classifier in concentrator.INTRODUCTION It is well knows that ball mill circuits closed with cyclones or spiral classifier such as a primary grinding circuit, a secondary grinding circuit and SAB mill have become an industry standard. Which grinding process employed will be determined by the P80 value of ground products. When the primary closed circuit ball mill or SAB that it is different throughout between the two processes was employed, a grinding fineness with -200mesh under 68% will be available. However, the secondary grinding circuit with the fineness of -200mesh above 80% can be conducted. Of course, the grinding fineness is determined by the grain size characteristics of the mineral."

This Bureau of Mines report describes 2nd evaluates iron ore resources in California and Nevada and analyzes the California and Japanese iron ore markets in which these resources will be used. The competitive position of California-Nevada ores, in these markets, was estimated by comparing regional iron ore prices, production costs, and transportation costs with those of foreign suppliers. Resources were determined to be sufficient to produce the equivalent of 585 million tons of 64-percent iron pellets at a price of less than $15 per ton delivered at California ports. Much higher tonnage could be produced at higher prices. Iron ore requirement of the California iron and steel industry will increase to an estimated 15.9 million tons by the year 2000. A study of the iron ore production potential of California-Nevada deposits and of out-of- State sources indicated that this ore requirement can be supplied most economically by California-Nevada ores. Iron ore import requirements of the Japanese iron and steel industry will increase to an estimated 150.0 million tons by the year 2000. A study of price trends in this market indicated that very little California-Nevada iron ore will be sold in Japan after 1973 when existing sales contracts expire. Iron ore-exports might be economically possible if ore could be transported from California to Japan at ballast rates as backhaul on existing petroleum shipping.

It has been within only the last two or three years that enough progress has been made in preferential flotation to warrant metallurgists in recommending the installation of commercial-sized plants for the treatment of copper-zinc-iron ores. Until the new processes had been worked out successfully, the treatment of this type of ore had proved a stumbling block in the path of metallurgical progress. Separation of lead-zinc ore is comparatively simple. A lead-zinc ore low in iron may be separated and concentrated by gravity con-centration, provided it is not necessary to grind too fine. Owing to the specific gravity of chalcopyrite and sphalerite being so nearly the same, however, their separation by gravity concentration is out of the question. Complex lead-zinc-iron ores in which the several minerals are intimately associated, requiring fine grinding to free them, have been successfully treated by flotation for the past fifteen years. Galena is easily floated, and its flotation, unlike that of chal¬copyrite, is not affected by the reagents used to inhibit the flotation of sphalerite and iron sulphides. When an attempt was made to use the methods of lead-zinc se-paration on copper-zinc ores, it was found that the depressant re-agents added to inhibit the flotation of the iron and zinc minerals would, under certain conditions, depress a large part of the copper. It was also recognized that, in the grinding of copper-zinc ore, soluble salts were generated which were detrimental to flotation unless properly controlled. The main part of this paper will be a discussion of solutions in the grinding circuit in relation to the pro¬duction of soluble salts and their effect on flotation.

Palabora Mining Copper has a unique ore body composition which unlike other copper ore bodies has three main components in significant proportions; these are copper bearing ore, magnetite and dolerite. The high content of dolerite, a hard barren material, creates a high proportion of pebbles which normally are recycled back to the mill. This action increases the mill bearing pressure and power progressively until corrective actions are taken. A logical action to solve the pebbles generation would be to incorporate a pebble crusher. This in fact was done however two fundamental issues were encountered; the high content of magnetite and existence of a cyclone classification section. Due to the high content of magnetite, metal detectors have not been able to work efficiently to separate tramp metal which causes damage to the pebble crushers. The existence of cyclones in the circuit had a detrimental effect on the final product when the pebbles crusher was online producing coarse sandy material. Due to the difficulties in treating pebbles via conventional procedures and the unique Palabora ore composition and characteristics, sorting technology was investigated at laboratory and pilot scale. It was found that a combination of optical and electromagnetic sorting could efficiently separate dolerite from the copper bearing and magnetite ores. This paper reports the findings of the laboratory and pilot scale work performed and discusses the additional benefits to the circuit.

In 1988, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 34,310-acre Diablo Mountain (Additional) study area (OR-001-058), in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources and occurrences. The study area lies along the east shore of saline Summer Lake in Lake County, OR, about 145 miles southeast of Bend and 45 miles northwest of Lakeview. The climate is semiarid and temperate, and the study area is almost treeless. Geologically, the (Additional) study area is in a region of fault block-formed mountains and basins, characterized by interior drainage. The area is mainly underlain by unconsolidated Quaternary and Pleistocene lake and playa sediments, which may include subsurface evaporite mineral deposits and resources. Near the center of the eastern margin of the study area are an occurrence of dolomitic limestone of unknown extent, and an area of basalt outcrop totaling 1.5 square miles. A veneer of windblown sand covers about one-half the study area.

"Quality control of drilled shafts is greatly dependent upon the practices of the site personnel. For drilled shafts cast under slurry, inspection of the hole prior to concreting is very difficult or impossible. There are numerous non-destructive test (NDT) methods currently available to assess the integrity of drilled shafts. This paper will discuss the theory and use of an emerging NDT technology known as Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP). The Thermal Integrity Profiling method measures the elevated concrete temperatures that occur during the hydration process. These temperature measurements are made along the length of the pile and can determine the integrity over 100% of the pile cross section, both inside and outside the reinforcing cage. With the known shaft volume information, TIP can evaluate the effective shaft radius at each measurement location. With the increased use of TIP on highway projects, there is a need to have standard criteria for shaft acceptance. Shaft acceptance criteria can be based upon thermal measurements and subsequent analysis of the data to determine the average shaft radius, local concrete cover, and cage alignment. With this additional information obtained via the thermal testing method, acceptance methods based upon concrete cover can be developed. In this paper the Thermal Integrity Profiling method will be described, results from a case history will be discussed, and an acceptance criteria based upon concrete cover will be proposed.INTRODUCTIONDrilled shafts are an attractive foundation element in many applications due to their large axial and lateral capacities. When drilled shafts are cast in a dry hole, it is possible to inspect the hole prior to casting, allowing for very basic level of quality control, although the shape of the completed element is still unknown without some form of post construction testing. When drilled shafts are installed where soil conditions are unstable, the shafts will often be cast under slurry to support the surrounding soils during the construction process. When casting a drilled shaft under slurry, it is very difficult to impossible to accurately and efficiently inspect the hole prior to casting concrete and it is equally difficult or impossible to inspect the shaft during the casting process"

Metal Mines Limited (Bancroft Division) was incorporated m 1964 to take over the assets of Faraday Uranium Mines Ltd., including their uranium deposit near Bancroft. Ontario. This paper outlines the geology of the Bancroft area, and. then go on to describe the principle rock types m the mine workings, especially the pegmatite, which is the host rock for the uranium mineralization. The structure and mineralogy of the orebodies are thoroughly covered, and, after a summary of the production and ore re-serve figures, the paper concludes with suggestions for further exploration work. Location and History M ETAL Mines Limited, Bancroft Division, is located in Faraday township, Hastings county, Ontario. The main production shaft and concentrator are about: Y2 mile north of Highway 28 and about 5 miles west of the village of Bancroft (Figure 1). The presence of radioactive minerals in the Ban-croft-Wilberforce area has been known since the early 1920's. Uraninite was found at the Richardson deposit near Wilberforce in 1922, and some attempts were made to produce radium from the deposits of the area between 1929 and 1931.

MOST OF THE key items in the bituminous-coal and Lignite industry declined in 1954 compared with 1953. Production, consumption, exports, average value per ton, men working, and days worked all declined; however, in the field of mechanization, the percentages mechanically loaded, mechanically cleaned, mined by auger, and mined by stripping all increased, as did production per men per day. Production.-The output of soft coal in 1954-391.7 million tons- was 14 percent less than the 457.3 million tons produced in 1953. The lower production in 1954 was due largely to a sharp reduction in consumption in the United States and to a drop in exports.

The Bureau of Mines is researching a new technology for dewatering clay suspensions that consists of flocculation by high-molecular-weight poly-ethylene oxide (PEO) polymer and subsequent removal of water from the floes via a trommel. The minimum amount of PEO required to dewater the clays depends on the ions adsorbed on the surface of the elay particles. Infrared studies were performed on clays with Li+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Ba2+, or 8r2+ adsorbed, with and without adsorbed PEO, to develop data to aid in understanding the dewatering mechanism. Hydroxyl stretching modes between 3,400 and 3,250 em-I, associated with water adsorbed on the clay, showed changes in intensity proportional to the ionic eharge-to-radius ratio; that is, the ionic potential. In addition. a water-bending vibration of adsorbed water at 1,630 cm-1 showed variations associated with water desorption. The data are consistent with changes in adsorption of PEO resulting from variation of the acidity of water coordinated with the exchange ions, induced by the variation in field strength of the ions with the ionic potential.

Geochemical prospecting method using stream sediments, soils and rock chips has been tested to see the applicability for the typical Kuroko field in Japan. Three independent anomalies have been detected in maps being shown by grav densities of cells which are represented by the results of factor analysis as well as distribution of minor elements scaled in logarithm. A small vein type mineralization which has outcrops could be attributed to the origin of them whereas the one near the surface of known Kuroko deposit to a coincidence. The addition of drill core geochemistry is required to complete the interpretation.

Froth flotation of alumina particles was studied by employing and hydrogen gas bubbles. The effect of current density was studied over a range of 0.1 to1.6 kA/m2. Compared to hydrogen, the use of oxygen bubbles at any given gas evolution rate resulted in a higher flotation recovery. The existence of an optimum current density, for each given particle size was indicated. Flotation at higher current densities resulted in better flotation kinetics, while flotation at lower current densities resulted in better Spas utilization.

The purpose of tins paper is not to present new date on the pressure losses due to bends and chances of area in mine openings through which air flows, but rather to correlate existing data, determined mainly on small duct systems and expressed in a variety of ways, according to uniform methods that facilitate their use in pressure-loss computations. These are required in such, air-flow problems as determining the quantity that will flow through is mine openings under a certain pressure difference or, conversely, the pressure difference that will be required to maintain a certain rate of flow. Air flowing through h ducts, such as mine airways, encounters resistance to flow due to interference of the individual air streams with each other caused by the wall surfaces. The result is that part of the kinetic energy of the flowing stream is converted to heat; and constant renewal of the kinetic energy from the total energy of the flow is required to maintain it. This process manifests itself by a decrease of the total pressure (static pressure plus velocity pressure; of the air in the direction of flow; in order that flow pray occur, there must necessarily be a differences in total pressure between the two cads of the air-ay equivalent to the pressure losses occasioned by the flow, which automatically adjusts itself in magnitude to the pressure difference maintained.

Al2O3,-WC Composite powder for cutting tools was synthesized by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis using A1 powder as a reducing agent. WC, W2C and Al2O3 were concurrently formed in WO3Al-C system. It was found that the complete reaction was achieved with excessive addition of carbon and appropriate processing parameters such as degree of dilution, particle size of aluminum, compaction pressures of green pellets and carbon source. The final product which was leached by 50% HN03+HF diluted solution was consisted of Al2O3-55wt% WC having 2-3um of mean particle size.

INTRODUCTION Under a Federal grant by the Urban Mass Transit Administration (UMTA) (80%), and sponsored by the State of New York (200), Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority is constructing a 10.3 km (6.4 mile) light rail rapid transit system in Buffalo, New York. The $450 million project, which began construction in the Spring of 1979, is unique in rail transit alignment designs in the U.S.A. and the first predominantly underground light rail system in North America. The Buffalo project is unique in that the first phase of the expandable system follows the alignment of Main Street and is on the surface in a proposed 1.6 km (1.0 mile) pedestrian mall in the downtown business district. The alignment then progresses northward into a cut-and-cover portal and standard double-box configuration for 2.74 km (1.7 miles) at a depth of 9.1-10.7 m (30-35 ft) and subsequently drops into bedrock at depths of 18.3-27.4 m (60 to 90 ft). The 5.63 km (3.5 mile) rock tunnel section consists of two single tunnels 4.88 m (16.0 ft) nominal finished diam. and includes five stations. The rock tunnel line section was divided into a north and south contract of 2 316 m (7,600 ft) and 3 243 m (10,640 ft), respectively. THE occurrence of twins in large ferrite crystals, made by a new process, was reported in a recent note. This paper describes a typical case of such twinning and suggests, on the basis of the observed facts, why smooth slip-planes are rarely observed in this metal. METHOD OF PREPARATION The material In which the crystals here dealt with were grown was made from 1/8 -in. Armco iron welding rod containing C, 0.04; S, 0.037; P, 0.003; Si, 0.008, and Mn, 0.02 per cent. This rod was cold drawn into wire about 1 mm. dia. A piece of this wire was supported vertically and was locally heated in hydrogen at atmospheric pressure to about 1400° C. by an alternating current (60 cycles per sec.) of about 35 amp., passed through it between a pair of travelling contacts about 8 cm. apart. The rate of travel for the case in hand was 12 cm. per hr. After some 30 cm. of the length of the wire had been heated and cooled in this manner the whole wire was immersed for a few seconds in dilute nitric acid, not restrained by alcohol. Etching was continued until, as nearly as could be judged by eye, the original smooth cylindrical surface of the wire was no longer capable of specular reflection.

THIS CHAPTER of the Minerals Yearbook (Volume III) contains overall injury experience for coal mines, both anthracite and bituminous coal, coke plants, petroleum and natural gas, peat, and asphalt and related bitumens (native); metal mines, metallurgical plants, including ore-dressing plants and primary nonferrous reduction plants and refineries; nonmetal mines; nonmetal mills; sand and gravel operations; slag (iron blast-furnace) plants; and stone quarries and their related plants. Volume I of the yearbook contains a chapter showing injury experience and employment data treated separately by categories: Metal mines, nonmetal mines, quarries and their related plants, metallurgical plants (ore-dressing plants and primary nonferrous reduction plants and refineries are shown separately), nonmetal mills, sand and gravel plants, and iron blast-furnace slag plants. Volume II contains injury and employment experience in the fuel industries (anthracite, bituminous coal including lignite, coke, petroleum and natural gas, native asphalt and related bitumens, and peat). Injury and employment data were collected from coal producers on the regular mandatory basis as required by the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act (30 U.S.C., sec. 455). Similar data for 1962 from metal, nonmetal (except well and brine operations), stone, and sand and gravel producers were collected by a. mandatory reporting system under the provisions of the Act of September 26, 1961, Public Law 87-300 (75 Stat. 649). Before 1962, these nonfuel producers reported voluntarily to the Bureau of Mines. Producers of all other minerals (fuel and nonfuel) reported the requested injury and employment data voluntarily to the Bureau for 1962, the same as in preceding years.
