This work evaluates the deformation behaviour, at warm working temperatures, of green particle-reinforced aluminium composites produced by powder blending in a high-energy ball mill. The work focuses on metal matrix composites (MMCs) based on the 2124-Al alloy, reinforced with 10 or 15 vol.% SiC and metal matrix nanocomposites (MMNCs) based on the 2124-Al alloy, reinforced with 5 or 10 vol.% Al2O3. Three batches for each powder were blended and powder properties such as particle size distribution (PSD) and shape were consistent after blending. It was observed that a more uniform distribution of the reinforcement phase in the aluminium alloy matrix was achieved in 2124-Al/Al2O3 than in 2124- Al/SiC composites. The powders (unreinforced 2124-Al and blended) were initially over-aged at 350°C for 2 hours to reverse any natural ageing that may have occurred prior to use. The over-ageing was incorporated to improve compressibility of the powders with the aim of achieving green compacts with higher integrity. Uniaxial compression tests performed at ambient temperature on a Gleeble® 3500 thermomechanical simulator were unsuccessful as the green compacts fragmented. Engineering stress-strain curves showed that green compacts of unreinforced 2124-Al, 10%SiC MMC and 5%Al2O3 MMNC deformed in a similar manner at ambient temperature and had the same compressive fracture stress of approximately 170 MPa. When the deformation temperature was increased from ambient to warm working temperatures (170–280°C) it was observed that electrical resistance heating (the heating mode of the Gleeble®) of unreinforced Al alloy, MMC and MMNC green compacts did not occur. This was attributed to the high electrical conductivity of aluminium, which resulted in poor heat generation due to the low electrical resistance in the samples. It was presumed that the small sample size (d=8 mm, h=12 mm) also caused rapid heat loss. After further experimentation, the green compacts were heated successfully by insulating the samples to retain heat. It was found that at 280°C, increasing the soaking time from 6 to 20 minutes decreased flow stress and improved plastic flow in the 2124-Al/10%SiC green compact.

Earle Faig Along with other transportation modes, the barge industry will be greatly affected by trends in domestic coal production. Traditionally, coal has been one of the major commodities moved by barge. Now, because of events in the international energy market, coal is finally getting the recognition it deserves as a major component of the country's energy program. Perhaps even more significantly, a series of events has caused other countries to turn to the United States as a source of coal. Although the outlook for coal demand is optimistic, it will be greatly influenced by the ability of the transportation sector to handle the additional traffic. Because of its long experience in moving large quantities of coal, the barging industry is in an excellent position to capitalize on coal's increased popularity. A brief description of the barging industry should facilitate the discussion of coal as it relates to that industry. Barge companies operate on a river system that is over 40 Mm (25,000 miles) long. It includes the East and West Coasts and the Mississippi River System comprised by the Allegheny, Monongahela, Kanawha, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, Cumberland, Arkansas, Warrior-Tombigbee, and Mobile Rivers, and some smaller tributaries. The Gulf Intracoastal Waterway stretching along the Gulf Coast from Brownsville, TX, to Apalachicola, FL, also is considered part of the inland waterway system. Approximately 1,800 companies operate on the inland river system and have a combined fleet of about 4,400 towboats and 28,000 barges. The fleet of towboats represents 4.8 GW (6.4 million hp) of power. The towboats comprising this fleet vary in size from a small harbor boat to a large line haul boat with 7.5 MW (10,000 hp) of power. The choice of size and power of the boat depends on a number of factors, including the size of the river and operational constraints, such as lock size, river-current rate, and water level. The choice also depends on the tow size. A single tow on a river capable of locking through 15 barges at a time handles up to almost 20 kt (22,000 st), whereas a tow on the lower Mississippi, which has no locks, can accommodate up to 41 kt (45,000 st) of cargo. Because the quality of coal is not typically damaged by exposure to the elements, it is usually moved in open hopper barges, although covered barges are used occasionally. The most frequently used size is the jumbo barge that measures 59 m (195 ft) long by 11 m (35 ft) wide by 4 m (12 ft) deep and can handle up to 1.4 kt (1,500 st) of coal. Advantages of Barge Transportation Barging offers several inherent advantages in transportation of bulk commodities like coal. First, barges can carry large quantities of product. A single jumbo hopper barge can handle 1.4 kt (1,500 st) of cargo while it takes 15 91-t (100-st) capacity rail cars or 57 trucks hauling 24 t (26 st) each to move an equivalent amount of cargo. Thus, barges can move more tonnage with less equipment than competing forms of transportation. Second, barging offers the most fuel efficient means of transportation. Less energy is required to push a load over water than to pull a similar load over land. The amount of pollution attributable to barge traffic is minimal because barges consume less fuel. Third, barging is an inexpensive form of transportation. The inland waterway industry transports about 12% of the nation's freight for about 2% of the total freight bill. This can be attributed to competition between the large number of companies on the river system and competition with other transportation modes. Fourth, barging is an environmentally safe method of transportation. Inland river routes expose fewer urban areas to hazardous substances than rail or truck. And barge spills occur less frequently than rail or truck spills. The industry does pose some disadvantages. The waterway system is constrained by the natural river network, so barges cannot travel on the most direct straight-line route. This means that barging is usually an incomplete form of transportation requiring interface with truck or rail. The industry's market is limited to those geographical areas that are located on or near the rivers. In addition, it is a time-consuming transportation mode, making it impractical for many types of commodities.

It has been said that safety promotion passes through four stages--the band-playing, the machine-guarding, the protective equipment, and finally the educational stage; the last is the most important in the development of the safety program. It has been estimated that only 15 percent of accidents can be pre- vented by machine guarding and protective equipment; the other 85 percent must be stopped by the safety efforts of the individual workers and their supervisory officials, and one of the fundamentals of safety work is the education of workers to develop safety consciousness or safety mindedness. One way of educating men to think about safety is by the use of posters. Safety engineers at the Calumet 2 Hecla mines in Michigan have been conduct- ing a safety contest among the men by the use of posters of an unusual type in addition to those usually employed to illustrate bad practices and to display the number of days without a lost-time accident. The first requisite for the success of the safety poster is a good artist or draftsman; in the poster contest instituted at the Calumet & Hecla mines two sheets were prepared illustrating various conditions in the slope workings, including a large number of unsafe practices. The object of the contest was to get the men to think about safety through criticism of the unsafe conditions displayed on the posters. The following notice accom- panied the posters:

THE KIDD CREEK MINE is located within the Abitibi greenstone belt, near its west end, in an area known as the Porcupine mining camp (Fig. 5). The Abitibi belt, long known for its many major gold and base metal deposits, is the largest Archean (early Precambrian) greenstone belt within the Canadian Shield. In the Porcupine area, the greenstone belt is composed principally of Keewatin (older Archean) basic to intermediate volcanics, with subordinate felsic volcanics developed• locally. Greywacke, mainly of volcanic derivation, occurs associated with and overlying these volcanics. Timiskaming (younger Archean) sediments, principally coarse clastics, unconformably overlie the Keewatin volcanics and sediments. The reader is referred to Goodwin and Ridler (1970) •r. for a more comprehensive description of the Abitibi belt.

The comminution circuit at Tarkwa Gold Mine was commissioned as a Single Stage SAG mill operated in closed circuit with hydrocyclones designed to process 4Mtpa. The circuit was later expanded by adding a secondary ball mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones with a view to treat 12Mtpa. The change in the circuit configuration and assigning the low aspect ratio SAG mill for primary grinding application makes the Tarkwa experience unique in terms the optimisation strategy and operating philosophy. This paper reports the findings from a series of surveys performed on this plant. The surveys reported include data obtained when the SAG mill was operated as a single stage mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones and also SABC mode under two different feed conditions. The differences in operating philosophy between the initial single stage SAG circuit and the current SAG/Ball mill circuit are discussed.

An expression for the diffusion coefficient of inlerstitial atoms in the bcc lattice is derived which takes account of jumps between tetrahedral and octahedral interstices. The results are applied to the case of carbon diffusion in iron to find values for jump frequencies of the types, octahedral-tetrahedral, tetra-hedral-tetrahedral, and tetrahedral-octahedral. ThERE has been renewed discussion1-5 concerning the mechanism of diffusion of interstitial atoms in the bcc lattice. This lattice has both octahedral and tetrahedral interstices, and it has been pointed out that the interstitial atoms may make jumps of the octahedral-octahedral type, hereafter called o-o, octahedral-tetrahedral, o-t, and tetrahedral-tetrahedral, t-t. Doubt has been cast on the applicability of snoek's8 model for internal friction to some interstitial migrations in bcc lattices wherein he proposed 0-0 jumps as the principal mechanism of migration. Also, the anomalous excess diffusion of carbon in iron at high temperatures4 has been ascribed to t-t jumps,2,3 even though the sites normally occupied are octahedral. In this paper an expression is derived for the diffusion coefficient, taking account of the three types of jump mentioned. The relationship of the coefficient to the corresponding internal friction relaxation time is found for the limiting case corresponding to Snoek's model. These results are applied to the case of carbon in iron. In Fig. 1, the structure is shown with the locations of the interstices. Each o site has four t site neighbors coplanar with it, and each t site lies halfway between two o sites. There are four t site first neighbors of a t site lying at the vertices of a tetrahedron. Under the auspices of the Federal-Provincial Uranium Reconnaissance Program, a geochemical orientation survey was undertaken in an area of uraniferous Lower Proterozoic (Aphebian) rocks near Cape Dorset in southwest Baffin Island. The main objective of this study was to establish a methodology for a future reconnaissance geochemical program using lake samples over a 300-mile Lower Proterozoic rock belt that occurs along the southern coast of Baffin Island. Mineralogical and chemical studies of known radioactive occurrences, combined with detailed sampling of secondary environment media in the vicinity of the showings. indicate that uranium is the most significant pathfinder, despite considerable enrichment of other metals in the uraniferous rocks, Significant geochemical patterns produced by uranium in lake waters and uranium in lake sediments have been obtained, but their relative usefulness depends on the distribution of carbonate bedrock, which in turn affect the bicarbonate content of lake waters. In southern Baffin Island, because of erratic variation in lake-water alkalinity, it is recommended that both water s and sediments be sampled on a routine basis. The need for lake-water acidification to prevent depletion of soluble metal ions in samples resulting from adsorption on the walls of the containers and/or suspended solid matter is discussed briefly. The base metal potential of the area was examined in some detail and found to be significant, particularly for a Lower Proterozoic gossanous formation that occurs throughout southern Baffin Island.

"FROM 1850 when the annual production was around 50 million tons, coal output in Great Britain expanded rapidly to 225 million tons in 1900 and 287 million tons in 1913. However, during the First World War, countries which had previously bought large quantities of coal from Britain sought other sources of sup-ply or developed their own coal re-sources. Thus from the record figure of 73 million tons exported in 1913, Britain's coal exports declined until in 1938 they stood at 39 mil-lion tons. An important reason for this was the development of oil engines for marine propulsion. Today, nearly all the navies and mercantile shipping in the world have turned to oil engines. Sometime in the future, however, it is reasonable to expect nuclear power to replace oil.During the Second World War, coal output in Great Britain and manpower at the mines were reduced considerably and in 1.945, 175 mil-lion tons were produced by 709,000 miners. Exports were meagre, only 8.""7 million tons went to foreign consumption. During the severe winter of 1947, inland demand for coal exceeded production and exports were prohibited. Even importation of coal was required to meet inland demand. These were years when the coal industry of Great Britain made immense efforts to secure maximum output irrespective of economy. The energy needs of Great Britain appeared insatiable; but had it been possible to export, the nationalised mining industry could have made huge profits as there was a world shortage of coal. However, home needs were considered to be the priority and many overseas markets were lost. Other producers moved in and secured long-term contracts. Not only was the British export market lost, but also the nationalised industry had to sell the imported coal at the same prices as home-produced coal and suffered losses up to of:3 per ton. Bence, at a time when the National Coal Board might have ac-cumulated a reserve fund to cope with less prosperons times, it was having to spend large sums of money securing sufficient coal for inland consumption. This was a time when intensive efforts in the mining industry, comparable with those of many industries and establishments inclusive of the armed services during the war, would have produced a greater amount of coal and have been of immense value to the country as a whole."

The Tuscaloosa Metallurgy Research Center of the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is investigating the recovery of phosphate from beneficiation slime, as part of the Bureau's efforts to conserve mineral resources through increased use of wastes. Phosphate equivalent to about two-fifths of U.S. production is discarded annually in the wastes. Exploratory flotation tests on the plus 5-um fraction of a slime sample showed promise for a classification-flotation technique. Onsite classification tests at six phosphate washing plants were conducted with a two-stage hydro cyclone system designed to recover the plus 5-um material. The cyclone underflows contained 8.3 to 19.1 percent P2O5, and the recovery of the plus 5-um PZOS values ranged from 81 to 95 percent. The percent P2O5 recovery from the total slimes ranged from 38 to 47 percent. Batch-flotation studies are currently being conducted.

Seafloor hydrothermal deposits are found worldwide at 700 to 3,600 meters below sea level [1] and contain base and precious metals like Cu, Pb, Zn, Au, and Ag. Some deposits were found in the Japanese exclusive economic zone and the commercial potential will depend on developments in mining and treatment costs of onshore mines. The ores require mineral processing to become concentrate for the various metal smelters and the authors are investigating mineral processing treatments of collected samples. The collected samples were classified into three components (chimney, mounds, and substrate rocks) and they were separated using a RETAC jig. The mound component contains zinc, lead, and copper minerals and further separation using flotation was investigated. This paper introduces results of the mineral processing tests using gravity separation and flotation.

Pressure leaching of a bulk flotation concentrate prepared from a complex Cu-Pb-Zn sulphide ore was carried out at 150 and 190¦C under 1050 kPa oxygen overpressure in 1 L and 4 L titanium autoclaves to extract zinc, and to obtain residues for smelting tests and leach liquors for purification and recovery of the zinc by electrowinning. Dissolution of 95% of the zinc was achieved at both temperatures. Copper and iron dissolution and the degree of oxidation of the sulphide sulphur to elemental sulphur or sulphate depended on the temperature of the leach. At 190¦C, a jarosite (a basic iron sulphate) was the major iron-containing material in a residue that contained 17% total sulphur. Its formation was associated with dissolution of 18% of the iron. At 150¦C, oxidation of the sulphide sulphur and dissolution of the iron were significantly less. Only 7% of the iron was dissolved and a residue containing 25% total sulphur, present as a lead jarosite, lead sulphate, and elemental sulphur, was obtained. The formation of small pellets of unreacted sulphides coated with elemental sulphur caused problems during the leaching at 150¦C, and also during scale-up from the 1 L to the 4 L autoclave at 190¦C. At 150¦C the concentrate required two stages of leaching to achieve dissolution of over 90% of the zinc. These problems are discussed.

O circuito de flotação de Fábrica Nova é composto por três colunas de quatro metros de diâmetro e quinze de altura, equipadas com sparger’s tipo retrofit (misturadores), utilizando uma mistura de ar e polpa para geração de bolhas. As colunas operam em paralelo constituindo o estágio rougher. Os produtos gerados neste estágio são tratados em células convencionais (cleaner e scavenger). Com o empobrecimento do ROM proveniente da Mina de Fábrica Nova e conseqüente aumento de SiO2 na alimentação da flotação, fez-se necessário ajuste no circuito com o intuito de garantirmos qualidade competitiva do pellet feed de Fábrica Nova. Foram feitas alterações de rota do rejeito do estágio rougher, direcionando o mesmo para o rejeito final (no circuito padrão o mesmo alimentava o estágio scavenger). O rejeito do rougher e o rejeito do scavenger compõem o rejeito final da flotação. Um ajuste no percentual de sólidos da alimentação da flotação foi necessário para favorecer a coleta da sílica (saindo da ordem de 58-60% para 53-54%). Com esta manobra conseguimos retirar o excesso de SiO2 do circuito de flotação, possibilitando a geração de pellet feed com qualidade dentro dos padrões VALE.

"For a good many years the Bureau of Mines and various state mining experi¬ment stations have endeavored to develop some method of utilizing the immense deposits of lignite in the United States. Work in relent year has indicated that the best method of this is to drive off the moisture and most of the volatile water from the lignite in some form of carbonizing apparatus leaving a residue high in fixed carbon and low in moisture and volatile matter, which by briquetting can be made into a high-grade fuel. The earlier forms of carbonizing equipment tried were complicated, costly to build and keep in repair, and could not be operated intermittently without being seriously damaged. During the year 1922, however the Bureau of Mines devised a very simple carbonizing oven which produces a uniformly well carbonized product. This oven is essentially a vertical shaft with means for supplying raw lignite at the top and discharging the carbonized limited at the lower end. Air in regulated amount is admitted to the shaft at two horizons, and a zone of combustion maintained through which the column of lignite passes. The lignite is thus carbonized by construction of its contained matter and a small proportion of its fixed carbon, leaving most of the fixed carbon in the carbonized product or ""char"". The degree of carbonization can be closely controlled by varying the volume of air supplied to the oven and the rate of travel of the charre down the shaft.The ""lignite char"" produced is a soft material resembling charcoal more than coal or coke, but somewhat harder than charcoal. A typical analysis is shown in the table headed ""Fuels,"" further on in this papers."

Underground coal mines in Australia have embraced the use of various inertisation techniques both proactively and reactively. The use of such techniques can have a significant influence on ratios and trends used to monitor the status of the underground environment. Whilst control strategies should never be ignored in favour of preserving the integrity of ratios, the influence and significance of the changes likely to be seen should be anticipated and understood for reliable interpretation of the situation. Injuries and fatalities resulting from roof falls are still a major concern in U.S. coal mines, and many researchers are focused on developing meaningful approaches to minimize this hazard. In the United States, coal mine roofs can vary widely in composition, geometry, and inherent heterogeneity, leading to a wide array of different roof fall failure types. Researchers frequently employ numerical modeling tools to reproduce this physical phenomenon and provide key guides to engineers regarding roof conditions and control as long as the input data and constitutive relations are appropriately selected. Simulating such complexity requires expertise and constitutive models that adequately simulate roof behaviors. However, the currently available constitutive models have shortcomings in capturing some of the roof fall failure types common in underground coal mines, such as guttering. A new constitutive model is developed to address the shortcomings of constitutive models commonly used for coal roof stability analysis. The constitutive model developed in this study combines the anisotropic-elasticity and nonlinear strain-softening responses. In addition, the developed constitutive model can simulate up to three different joint sets implicitly, allowing for use in both continuum and discontinuum settings, and can be used in both Lagrangian finite-volume and distinct element method codes of Itasca. First, the mathematical expressions of the model are provided. Afterward, the validation phase of the developed model that covers comparisons with analytical solutions and those of existing models (e.g., anisotropic elasticity, ubiquitous-joint, and bilinear strain-hardening/softening ubiquitous-joint plasticity) is presented. Finally, a hypothetical coal mine roadway facing high horizontal stress is simulated. The presented model successfully shows three distinct stages of a cutter roof in a shale roof: (1) initiation of shear cracks at the rib– roof intersection, (2) extension of cracks deeper into the roof (i.e., above the roof bolt length horizon), and (3) cantilevered roof. It is demonstrated that the presented constitutive model has the potential to help future researchers in simulating various roof responses.

The Ohio River Tunnel Project encountered multiple unexpected geotechnical challenges such as crown and invert instability due to the overstress condition affecting the strata above, below, and in the tunnel alignment during and after TBM excavation along with the potential for methane inflow. This paper showcases how the orientation of a tunnel alignment has a significant impact on how in-situ geological stress can impact the excavation of a tunnel from the contractor’s point of view and how geological features influence gas inflow to the alignment over time.

Studies such as the investigations into the solubility of gases in crude oil under various conditions, which have been carried on during the past three or four years, are very interesting from an academic point of view, but this consideration alone is hardly sufficient to warrant the large contributions from the industry necessary to maintain them. Some definite benefit to the industry as a whole should be forthcoming. The purpose of this paper is to direct the attention of company engineers, and company executives, to some of the ways in which the information gained from these studies can be made directly profitable. This work has two principal economic aspects. One affects the investment budget, and through it the financial requirements of the companies. The other affects operations, and through this course is reflected in current earnings. It will be shown that, as a direct result of the investigations into gas solubility, undertaken in the recent past by various investigators, it is now possible: 1. To determine more accurately the amount of reservoir oil originally present. 2. To obtain closer control on operating conditions, to effect more economical recovery. 3. To predict earlier and more dependably when and how much surface lifting equipment will be needed. 4. To reduce, or entirely avoid the very large investment in gasoline recovery equipment now frequently found necessary. 5. To control the gravity of the pipe-line oil so as to secure the greatest possible revenue from the products of the well. 6. To effect the recovery of a large amount of gasoline now wasted while the practicability of a gasoline recovery system is being decided. 7. To plan operations, by comparison with the history of old properties operated without this new information, so as to avoid the mistakes of ignorance made in the past. These points will be discussed in the following pages, though not necessarily in the order stated. There is so much overlapping of the points themselves, and of the data from which they have been drawn as conclusions, that to treat them in any particular order would require
