Longwall ground behavior in the Illinois Coal Basin was studied in the past (1, 2, 3). Most of the past studies, however, were concentrated on either surface subsidence or underground structural behavior. In this study, both surface and in-mine ground behaviors are considered, which include: 1) stress and deformation characteristics in the chain pillars; 2) roof and floor deformations; 3) surface subsidence characteristics, including time effect; 4) relationship between the surface subsidence and underground strata behavior; and 5) the ultimate hearing capacity underneath the chain pillars. Field measurements and tests were conducted and the data were analyzed using both analytical and statistical methods. The findings in this study can he used by mine operators in the Illinois Coal Basin for longwall ground control planning and design.

Plant layout, process development and elements of machine component design are outlined, and key steps in integration into a stee-1 production system are detailed. Recent productivity advances and improvements in quality are described. Process developments are reviewed, and some future avenues for this technology are considered.

"Ribbon-growth-on-substrate is a casting method, which offers a possibility to control heat flow, nucleation and subsequent crystal growth at the liquid-substrate interface. This technology allows for low-cost and high throughput shaping of silicon sheets with controlled crystal grain size and orientation for use in solar cells. In this work, sheets of silicon- metal silicide composite materials were produced and their microstructure was studied. It was shown that depending on the relevant phase diagram and casting conditions, a micro/nano-sized eutectic structure of the casted sheet can be formed. Such composite materials possess properties promising for various applications in energy generation, storage and conservation. The advantages, potential and challenges of the ribbon-growth-on-substrate technique for production of composite sheet materials as well as novel areas of application for such materials are discussed.IntroductionThe Ribbon Growth on Substrates (RGS) process is well known in the solar industry as a process to produce multicrystalline silicon wafers. An industrial size pilot production line for continuous casting of silicon wafer was developed by RGS Development B.V. in the Netherlands (Figure 1). A comprehensive review of this technology and properties of the produced silicon wafers were reported by Schönecker et al [1]. The principle of the RGS process is explained in Figure 2. The relatively cold substrate extracts the crystallization heat from the liquid silicon in the casting frame. This results in the growth of a silicon ribbon (Vc) in contact with the substrate. When the substrate (Vp) is transported from the casting zone into the cooling section, the crystal growth stops, the wafer can be removed and the substrate can be re-used. Last few years large work was done on the industrialization and market development of RGS wafers for the solar industry. Part of this work was discussed by Schönecker et al [2]. Although there is still a good perspective on the middle and long term solar market for the RGS wafers, the current market situation was found to be unfavorable for new entrants."

As fases sigma (s) e austenita secundária (g2) surgem nesses aços, de uma possível reação de decomposição eutetóide da ferrita (a ? s + g2). Este trabalho estuda as transformações de fases, a caracterização das microestruturas do aço inoxidável superduplex UNS S32750, através de microscopia óÓptica, ferritoscopia, quantificação de fases, evolução da dureza Vickers do material, e a precipitação da fase s após tratamento térmico de recozimento a 800ºC em tempos variados. Essa fase é prejudicial ao aço, pois diminui a resistência à corrosão do mesmo e o fragiliza, sua formação ocorre entre 600ºC e 1.000ºC. Foi estudada a evolução da fase s através do método do caminho microestrutural proposto por Vandermeer, geralmente aplicado a recristalização e não em estudos de precipitação da fase s. Os resultados indicam que a nucleação da fase s ocorreu por saturação de sítios.

The USSR, over the last 20 years, has continued to increase its out-put year by year and it is now almost four times what it was at the end of the Second World War. In 1975, it exceeded 700 million tons of run-oi-mine coal (all ranks) which amounts to over 20 percent of world output. This rapid progress has been due to modernization of the industry, by means of increased mechanization and automation and the development of new machines and systems for underground workings and by the expansion of open-pit workings and the development and implementation of larger earthmoving machines.

"The axial resistance provided by deep foundations may be divided into two components: side resistance and tip resistance. The direction that the side resistance acts depends on the relative movement between the deep foundation and the adjacent soil. That is, when the foundation moves downward relative to the soil, then the side resistance is positive and acts upward. Conversely, when the soil moves downward relative to the foundation the side resistance is negative and acts downward. Research supports that both positive side resistance and negative skin friction develop in essentially all deep foundations. The side resistance distribution is a function of the soil strength and stiffness, the applied top loads, and whether the top load is sustained, transient, or a combination of sustained and transient loads. Consideration of drag load and downdrag has become more convoluted with implementation of geotechnical aspects into the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and its use of load and resistance factors. This paper examines the current AASHTO Specifications and presents an alternative design approach for drag load and downdrag using the LRFD framework. THE use of the diamond-drill hole as a means of breaking clown ore and waste is not new. Years ago, the method was adopted in mines in northern Ontario and in the western United States to reach out to bad pillars, or to remnants of ore left on walls, the winning of which by any other method might be dangerous or too expensive. The practice is still in vogue and has generally proved a success. Of the known mineral deposits in Canada and elsewhere, many are of very low grade. Some are marginal and not even worthy of being classed as 'ore' until some means is found and proved of exploiting them economically. Other conditions being favourable, if a mining method could be found that would give a large 'bulk break' with a sufficiently low cost of development and a low cast of mining per ton, mineral deposits of this latter type might be brought into the classification of ore. We know that any block-craving system whereby the ore may be undercut and allowed to crush and cave will give a very high breakage and low costs. In some cases, however, the physical characteristics of the ore do not lend themselves to this method. In such ore-bodies, the alternative system of 'bulk-breaking' might be aided by long diamond-drill blast holes. We could obtain this 'bulk breaking' by the use of long diamond-drill holes in conjunction with a sub-level system using extremely thick benches, or possibly by the adaption of modified open-pit methods to underground mining. ln fact, if conditions are favourable, the idea would be simply ta open up a slot or free face and break into it on a larger scale with longer holes. The use of deeper benches-that is, using each level as a sub-level and thereby eliminating much development footage, slashing, setting up, and mucking time-would naturally be expected to lead to cheaper mining.

Treating bauxite residue as an alternative source of metals for iron and aluminium industry is an approach to promote circular economy in metal industries. Reduction of metal oxides with H2-based process is an important step on decarbonisation of metal industry. In this study bauxite residue pellets were prepared and were reduced with different H2-H2O gas compositions at different temperatures which yielded with various degrees of reduction. The bauxite residue pellets were made from a mixture of bauxite residue and Ca(OH)2 powders and sintered at 1150°C. Hydrogen reduction was carried out on the oxide pellets using a resistance furnace at elevated temperatures in controlled reduction atmosphere of H2-H2O gas mixtures which resulted in reduction of iron oxides in the pellets. Unreduced and reduced pellets were subsequently heated to 1400°C to study their smelting behaviour using differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) technique to investigate the evolution of phases related to slag formation via smelting. Equilibrium module of Factsage™ ver 8.1 was utilised to analyse results of thermal analysis. It was observed that Tricalcium phosphate-β (CaP2O8), Bredigite (Ca7Si4MgO16), Rankinite (Ca3Si2O7), and calcium alumino ferrite (Ca[Al,Fe]6O10) were formed during thermal analysis as intermediate phases. The initial slag formation for sintered and reduced pellets occurred at 900°C which mainly contains calcium and small amount of strontium component. The slag formation rate increases significantly starting from 1100°C when iron oxides started to form initial molten slag phase which then followed by other oxides dissolution in the system. Gas formation was observed at 1180°C and it was found that the gas to be released from unreduced pellets is O2 meanwhile the gas to be released from reduced pellets is SO2 gas. Gas formation rate for both pellets start to increase at 1280°C when the remaining chemically bonded gas start to be released from the system.

Since the days of Adam Smith and Milton Friedman the discussion of corporate citizenship and sustainability has been flooded with multiple contradictions, with proponents of sustainability saying that it is a crucial cog in the business strategy, while those against, maintain that æthe business of business is businessÆ and therefore sustainability issues are just add-ons. Sustainability arises from a deeply held vision by corporate leaders that businesses can and should play a role beyond just making money. Businesses should embrace the understanding that everything that a company does has an impact both internally and externally (communities, employees and customers), and the natural environment. This paper highlights the approach that led to a view that there is a contradiction between profitability, sustainability and community development, and we provide a further argument to the contrary. This argument is based on a comprehensive literature review of over three decades by various scholars linking corporate social performance and corporate financial performance. Driefontein Gold MineÆs approach is that of linking the community development, natural environmental and employee well-being initiatives and projects to the mineÆs business strategy. The paper further highlights the coordination and implementation mechanism of sustainability at the mine where the accountability lies with the head of the mine operations. A two pronged approach is employed where there is an internal dialogue on sustainability between the various departments coordinated by the sustainable development department and an external tri-sector partnership with local government, interested and affected parties and the mine. These approaches are closely linked to the contributions towards the mineÆs financial bottom line.

"A three-dimensional finite-element heat-transfer model is conducted to predict temperature of hot copper plate in a slab continuous casting mold and the effect of casting speed on temperature difference between copper plate and solidifying shell is simulated in combination with process data. The results show that centre temperature of hot copper surface at casting speed 1.8 m·min-1 and 2.0 m·min-1 are higher than that of 1.6 m·min-1 casting speed 4.7-5.2 °C and 11.2-12.2 °C respectively and temperature is not increased linearly with casting speed. Temperature difference in meniscus between mold and shell is influenced obviously by casting speed and increased 4.0- 6.0 °C with increment of casting speed 0.2 m·min-1• Fluctuation of temperature difference in meniscus is a main reason to deteriorate casting quality as increasing casting speed.IntroductionIn conventional continuous casting of steel, a large amount of sensible and latent heat of molten steel dissipates in primary cooling zone and mold becomes a critical component of caster to govern steel quality, meanwhile, thermal load on mold is increased constantly and environment is also more abominable since high productivity and quality are required and high-effective technologies are applied. So, an in-depth understanding of thermal behavior of mold at high casting speed is essential to design cooling structure and maintain casting stability. Many studies have been carried out to shed light on thermal behavior in mold. Chow et al. [l] applied a mathematical model to heat transfer in billet mold at a high casting speed to give a new taper in order to minimize mold-strand interaction. Thomas et al. [2] researched relation between mold geometry and temperature distribution based on a finite-element heat-transfer model. Lu et al. [3] indicated that slab mold temperature are mainly affected by thickness of copper plate and nickel layer by a heat transfer model. Samarasekera et al. [4, 5] researched temperature of copper plates for both billet and slab molds and effect of a large number of factors ranging from water quality to casting speed. Park and Thomas et al. [6, 7] developed a finite-element thermal-stress model to determine temperature and thermal distortion and stress in both thin and slab molds and O'Connor et al. [8] applied an elastic-plastic-creep finite-element model in a funnel shaped mold to achieve same goals. Cicutti et al. [9] evaluated heat transfer and temperature fluctuation in a slab mold and proposed an expression to predict global heat flux as a function of process parameters and an index to quantify thermal instability. All mentioned above shown that thermal behavior is not only important to casting stability, it is also premise to further understand mechanical behavior in mold."

The successful application of the science of rock mechanics to the practical problems of coal mine design requires the acquisition and reduction to useable form of large amounts of field and laboratory data, and the construction and analyses of numerous geostructural models containing a wide variety of geometric and physical strength variables. Typically, the rime constraints placed on a new mine design project coupled with the inherent complexities of a good rock mechanics study combine to limit the applications of rock mechanics to the most rudimentary level. To facilitate a better application of rock mechanics to mine design problems, an interactive software package has been developed for use on a graphic mini-computer system that serves to aid the engineer in the timely and efficient analyses of rock mechanics data and geostructural models. The first phase of the rock mechanics package solicits the input of the raw geologic and rock strength data, analyzes and arranges this data in a logical manner, produces complete listings and statisitical summaries of the various rock properties, and stores the data on magnetic tapes and disks to serve as a future Rock Mechanics Data Base. The second phase of the software package provides for the analyses of a variety of geostructural models using a wide variety of geometric variables coupled with the rock strength data stored in the Rock Mechanics Data Base. This software package allows for the evaluation of numerous geostructural mine models for the design and selection of mine roof support and pillar systems (see Table l).

Different reefs being extracted from a mine will, in all likelihood, have significantly different semi-variogram models - and these will probably vary from geozone to geozone. As errors of estimation are dependent on the semi- variogram parameters, it follows, if a mine samples all reefs in all sections using the same sampling grid pattern, that estimation errors (or limits of confidence) will not be the same throughout the mine. This may be an undesirable situation! A geostatistical study of the relative merits of alternative sampling arrangements has been carried out by considering different reefs in different sections of a South African gold mine.

(1) The Castleman Basin was investigated by diamond drilling, engineering examination, and geologic study. Agreements permitting investigation of about 14,700 acres of land were entered into with 79 landowners. Eleven beds of coal between the horizons of the Harlem and Mercer beds were penetrated in drilling. These beds from top downward are: Harlem, Upper Bakerstown, Lower Bakerstown, Brush Creek, Upper Freeport Rider, Upper Freeport, Upper Kittanning, Middle Kittanning, Lower Kittanning, Mount Savage, and Mercer. "This study aims to demonstrate the capacity of the Discrete Element Method (DEM) to model and simulate fracture in brittle rock, capture the crack propagation process and determine crack propagation rates for various levels of external loading. In the numerical experiments reported here, a macroscopically homogeneous body of brittle rock, containing a single pre-existing crack, was subjected to tensile stress loading. Simulations concerned with model I crack growth process in 3D were carried out. The process of fracture has been observed under various steady state and dynamic conditions. The numerical results obtained reproduce qualitatively and quantitatively a variety of observed fracture phenomena. Specifically, this study examined the onset of cracks, single dominant cracks that grow across the specimen, crack bifurcations and branching. The density of fractures that can be nucleated and grow to a significant size with and without arresting each other, crack growth speed and stress distribution, all have been consistently and systematically analyzed. Suggestions on potential future developments are made and discussed.INTRODUCTIONFracture and failure mechanics are very important in mining, manufacturing, materials processing, mineral processing, civil and mechanical engineering, and many other disciplines of science and engineering. Yet, due to the complexity of fracture phenomena, no theoretical models of broad applicability are currently available (Bieniawski 1967). The simulation of crack propagation is therefore considered an open question in numerical rock mechanics. Although, a significant body of experimental research on fracture of materials was carried out since the early days of fracture mechanics (circa 1940s) (Poncelet 1946, Mott 1948), often in parallel with the development of fracture mechanics theories as well as with the development of experimental and observational techniques themselves, the experimental results were often done on particular classes of material such as glasses and other very brittle materials. Indeed, a number of specific experimental observations on the behavior of growing cracks in brittle materials were made in the 1940s for which generally accepted explanations based on physical principles are still lacking. Likewise, quantitative numerical modeling, based on both continuum and discrete methods, as a basis for understanding dynamic crack growth is still in a preliminary stage."

The possibility of using ultrasonic energy as a tool to improve the electrolytic deposition of copper and zinc from several electrolytes was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines. Sound with frequencies of 20, 26, 38, and 400 kilocycles per second and acoustical intensities of 0.25 to 1.5 watts per square centimeter was employed. Measurements of cell voltage, anode and cathode current efficiencies, and electrode potentials were made at various current densities. Effects of ultrasonics on the quality of the deposit and on anode corrosion also was noted. In the electrolytic recovery of copper from an acid copper sulfate solution at 50° C., adherent, well-consolidated deposits are normally obtained up to a current density of 30 amperes per square foot. As the current density is increased above this value, the deposits normally become progressively more spongy and less adherent. Ultrasonic irradiation resulted in adherent and well-consolidated deposits at current densities up to 300 amperes per square foot. Radiation also produced smaller grain size and preferred orientation of the copper crystals. In addition, radiation caused as much as 3-volt decreases in cell voltages at the higher current densities. These decreases were caused chiefly by depolarization of the anode, although small depolarization effects were also noted at the cathode. Radiation apparently did not greatly affect cathode-current efficiencies, but prevented excessive anode corrosion at the higher current densities and resulted in more uniform corrosion. Ultrasonic radiation at a frequency of 400 kilocycles per second was not as effective as radiation at the lower frequencies. Circulation of the electrolyte at rates up to 5 percent of the cell capacity per minute did not produce results comparable to those effected by ultrasonic radiation. Rapid rotation of the cathode up to 1,800 revolutions per minute gave results approaching those obtained with ultrasonics.

THE high cost of coal in Butte and the development of large amounts of cheap electric power from the Missouri river caused the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in 1908 to make an investigation as to the possibility of adapting this cheap electric power for the operation of their many large hoisting plants. The Fosterville Goldmine in Victoria Australia employs the BIOX« Process to liberate gold from its sulfidic flotation concentrate through bacterial oxidation. Gold occurrence is primarily as submicron particles in pyrite and arsenopyrite and has been described as being in æsolid solutionÆ and therefore not amenable to direct cyanidation. Once liberated by the oxidation process, the gold is then available for cyanide leaching. During the oxidation process it has been found that a portion of the liberated gold becomes suspended in the liquid phase in what appears to be a colloidal state. This liquid becomes a waste stream during washing of the oxidised solids and the suspended gold is therefore lost. A method was previously developed using an addition of quebracho tannin to significantly reduce this loss by formation of an iron-tannin precipitate which captures the gold which then reports to the cyanide leach circuit with the oxidised concentrate solids onto which it is adsorbed.This paper discusses the development and plant trial of a second processing step to further enhance gold recovery by use of flotation tailings essentially as a source of extra surface area to capture residual tannin-iron precipitate and its associated gold not recovered in the first step.CITATION:Symes, R, 2012. One of the most difficult tasks a project manager will have in pre-mine planning is dealing with the mine site's hydrologic regime. Numerous federal statutes passed by Congress in the last decade have made the coal mining industry more responsive to the environmental impact during all phases of the mining process. Permitting these mines has dictated a cradle to grave approach in dealing with water related issues. This paper will attempt to explore the application of these technology- based laws and their direct application to the unique environment found in Alaska's interior regions.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines study evaluates factors that influence longwall support and strata interaction. The longwall system is composed of an immediate and main roof structure and three supporting foundations: longwall panel, powered roof supports, and gob waste. The main roof forms a structure that is generally supported by all three foundations, while the immediate roof acts as a beam that cantilevers from the coal face to the powered support. In most cases, shield loading involves a complex interaction of both main roof and immediate roof behavior and is a combination of loads produced from convergence of the main roof and displacements of the immediate roof caused by deformations of the cantilevered roof beam. Since the shield stiffness remains constant for all leg pressures and main roof convergence is irresistible in terms of shield capacity, the shield must be able to control the behavior of the immediate roof or floor structure for shield loading to be sensitive to setting pressures. If the goal is to minimize total shield loading, any active setting force must be offset by reduced passive shield loading to justify the active setting loads. Field data sumest that the typical reductions in passive loading do not justify the required increases in setting pressure in some applications.
