Work has been carried out under Bureau of Mines Contract HO 395132 to develop improved sensor cells for use in direct-reading detectors and diffusion exposure meters. A pumped CO sensor cell was developed which has a shorter response time, improved temperature cycle characteristics, and improved linearity and stability at high CO concentrations. Diffusion CO sensor cells have shown good response level stability and linearity up to 1000 ppm. In addition, a new sensor cell catalyst has been developed for NO2 sensor cells which has a much shorter response time and improved response stability characteristics.

The change in shape of the void in a sirzterir~g copper mass has been investigated as a juntction of' density. A serial sectioning' technique was used to eoaltrate the irregular shape of the void at two levels qf density. A measure of the void size and configuration, the proximity number, is defined and used to describe the progress of void removal. The process of. void removal deduced front the observations of this study contrasts with current sintering models in that it takes into account the irregularity of structure of a sintering mass and demonstrates that isolated Porosity does not occur first as spherical pores, but as large, definitely nonspherical sections of the void void volume. The process of sintering, about which there is much practical and theoretical knowledge, has evaded a direct and thorough analysis despite the intensity with which it has been studied for 60 years or so. This is due, of course, to the complex structure of a sintering mass and the inability to observe directly the development of a fully dense solid from the initial particulate arrangement. Extensive theoretical analyses have been based on the adoption of one or another of several model systems, that is, by visualization and analysis of some sort of regular assembly or arrangement of geometric "particles" approximating the conditions of a sintering mass. It seems appropriate at this time to try to examine experimentally in some detail the extent to which a sintering mass of irregular particles dlffers from these models. Many models deal with neck growth and the initial stage of sintering and follow the direction established by ~ucz~nski' in 1949 for the sintering of spheres to flat plates. Recently Johnson and cutler2 have adapted these models to sintering of powder masses. coble3 has presented a mathematical model for sintering that applies to the middle and final stages of the process. These papers, without exception, assume a regular geometry, generally spheres in contact in a regular array. Rhines~ and coworkers, however, are studying the sintering process by applying a model based on the topological concept of genus which permits them to consider an irregular structure. whites has described the various models with the exception of that of Rhines et al., and the assumptions on which they are based and their shortcomings. The present paper examines the geometric changes that occur in the powder mass during sintering by examination of the void. The method is to analyze a series of partially sintered structures and to propose from this analysis the sequence of events which occur in the removal of the void space as a sintering mass progresses from a collection of individual particles to a solid body. The irregular nature of the stacking of particles and of the particles themselves will be taken into account. The significant points derived from this study are: first, accurate reconstructions of the irregular void shapes are presented; second, it is clearly established that closed porosity occurs first as widespread volumes of interconnected porosity, definitely nonspherical in shape; and third, a new factor, the proximity number, is defined, which serves in this paper as a tool for describing the void shape changes observed, and which will be used in a later paper as part of the basis of a mathematical model for sintering. While the specific material studied is copper, the observations are thought to be relatively general as indicated by comparison of the results with partially sintered structures in other materials presented in the literature, both metallic and nonmetallic. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Four series of specimens representing progressive stages of the sintering process were prepared by sintering high-purity copper powder for various time periods. A relatively large particle size was used so that the void-solid interface could be readily distinguished at low magnification. In three series of specimens a loose stacking of particles was obtained by pouring powder into an alumina mold and lightly tapping the mold. The green density of such compacts was approximately 40 pct of theoretical density. Two of these three series utilized irregularly shaped particles in the size range -230 +325 mesh, one series sintered in vacuum and one in hydrogen at 950°C. The third series of loosely stacked particles consisted of spherical particles in the size range -270 +325 mesh, sintered in hydrogen at 950°C. A fourth series was prepared from compacted irregular particles sintered in hydrogen at 950°C. The specimens for this series were formed by lightly pressing the irregularly shaped particles in a steel die; the green density of the pressed pellets was approximately 60 pct. The irregularly shaped particles used in this study are shown in Fig. 1. The density of these particles, measured by a toluene picnometer technique, is 98.2 pct of theoretical density. Each particle is highly convoluted, and in some instances appears in cross section to contain internal porosity. The density measurement, however, indicates that completely enclosed porosity is very small so that the individual particles have a highly irregular surface but are essentially fully dense copper. Therefore, most of the void space that appears in two dimensions to be isolated within the particle is actually at the particle surface and connected to the external void in the dimension not included in the plane of the cross section. In Victoria’s onshore Gippsland Basin, geology is driving brown coal developments, and geologists are key decision-makers. Prompted by volatile energy prices and the likelihood of a carbon constrained future, significant work has been carried out on the next generation of technologies to be applied to this giant resource. These include new-generation gasification technologies, coal conversion processes yielding products as diverse as diesel and fertiliser, drying technologies producing thermal and metallurgical coals and in situ conversion processes. However, coals aren’t coals, and brown coal available for new projects will have different quality parameters and mining economics from that currently mined.New projects are likely to be developed on coals with moisture contents averaging 60 per cent and corresponding low energy values. Whilst ash values will be low, averaging just 5 per cent (dry basis), this will at times approach 10 per cent, which is a level that would challenge the installed-generation technologies. Sulfur values will average 0.4 per cent (dry basis), but at times exceed 0.6 per cent, requiring technologies that address the potential for sulfur dioxide emissions. Whilst localised high levels of the fluxes iron (>1 per cent dry basis) and sodium (>0.3 per cent dry basis) would increase fouling of installed technologies, they may be suitable for selected next-generation technologies.Project viability for this next generation of technologies will be strongly influenced by mining cost, and geologists are playing a role in identifying higher-value coal. At its simplest, this is being achieved for open cut mines through regional, vertical strip ratio assessments, which are considered a first-order proxy for mining cost. Follow up assessments are incorporating mining and processing cost, coal quality penalties and product revenues. At a regional scale, it is informing the likely location and relative timing of future mine developments, as well as thinking around rehabilitation strategies, infrastructure and land-use planning.For deeper coal, factors like macro permeability, the ability to isolate seams from aquifers, groundwater chemistry, pressure temperature conditions, connection with groundwater recharge and in situ biota are being used as vectors to in situ coal conversion opportunities.Matching coal to the next generation of technologies has benefited from regional-scale geological studies of coal quality and mining economics, and has benefited from early engagement between geologists, technology developers and project proponents.CITATION:Maher, S and Love, G, 2014. Petro-diesel is a common collector for fine coal froth flotation but partitioning of diesel range organics (DROs) in process streams has not been widely studied. Preliminary research suggested that under normal dosing schemes total residual DRO in process waters should be limited to the sub-ppm water-soluble fraction (WSF). Further, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) should partition proportionately with DRO. The purpose of this study was to confirm these findings in laboratory flotation tests. Total DRO and specific PAHs were measured in tailings and concentrate streams, and coal recovery and ash rejection were tracked. Results show that concentrate waters consistently had higher DRO than tailing waters, and DRO in both streams generally increased with increasing diesel dosage. DRO again appeared to be limited to the WSF and PAHs tended to partition proportionately with DRO. Results indicate optimal flotation performance should generally coincide with minimal DRO partitioning to process waters. Under typical operating conditions residual DRO should not present an environmental concern; however, conditions should be avoided that allow significant overdosing of diesel.

The G-Tunnel heated block experiment is being conducted on the Nevada Test Site (NTS) as part of the Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations project (NNWSI). The purpose of the ambient temperature testing ph se is to evaluate rock-mass mechanical properties of a block (- 8 m3) under biaxial stress changes up to 7.5 MPa above an initialization in situ value of 3.1 MPa. Results indicate that the modulus of deformation ranges from 9.7 to 17.0 GPa and Poisson's ratio ranges from 0.21 to 0.33. In general, the higher values of the modulus and Poisson' s ratio were influenced by fracture propagations parallel to the compressive stress field. Other measurements indicated that cross-hole compression (p) wave velocities and single fracture permeability values were relatively insensitive to stress changes above the in situ value.

Asimismo en el yacimiento oriental, tenemos el peri y apomagmáticos de calcopirita, plomo-zinc, plata, plomo-plata, antimonio, oro, tungsteno y estaño. Finalmente, la repartición de zonas mineralizadas responde a dos causas: la asociación a varias clases de intrusiones y la relación directa a distintas categorías de líneas y regiones tectónicas.

This Bureau of Mines report contains information on 63 water flood projects in Colorado. Water was injected in 10 formations located in 58 oilfields. Specific field data presented include location, discovery, development, water supply, fluid injection, oil and water production, oil reserves, and oil recoveries by primary and secondary methods. An estimated 3.5 billion barrels of water has been injected to recover approximately 533 million barrels of oil, a ratio of 6.57 to 1. Most of the injection water is from alluvial deposits, although produced water is used in many fields. Injection water treatment is not a major problem. Appraisal of project success or failure in this report is based on technical, rather than economic, information.

The Bureau of Mines receives frequent requests for information on the treatment of mercury ores, but as its own and almost all other publications on mercury are out of print, the Bureau has prepared this circular on the metal for the prospector and operator of small mines and plants. Mercury, commonly though improperly termed ?quicksilver?, is the only common metal that is liquid at ordinary temperatures. Mercury is used in the amalgamation of gold and silver, in power boilers, explosives, friction-less bearings, laboratory apparatus, lamps, medicine, paint, rectifiers, and for ?silvering.? The last mentioned is being superseded by silvering with silver. The use of mercury boilers may increase when they are thoroughly understood, but amalgamation is -being replaced to some extent by the use of corduroy and other collecting mediums, such as jigs and flotation cells.

The polynomial method for estimating virial coefficients from experimental data suffers from three serious defects: (1) There is no known relationship between the polynomial coefficients and the virial coefficients, (2) the values of the estimates depend upon the degree of the polynomial and the particular set of values used for the independent variable, as well as the random errors in the dependent variable, and (3) the variances calculated for the estimates do not represent the mean square errors of estimation. Attempts to overcome these defects have thus far been unsuccessful; these attempts have also failed to account for the fact that none of the virial coefficients are uniquely determined by the values of the dependent variable for a finite set of values of the independent variable. The conclusion is that virial coefficients cannot be reliably estimated from experimental data unless additional information about the virial expansion itself, such as its rate of convergence, is available.

INTRODUCTION Rapid transit systems involving near surface tunneling in hard rock are becoming more numerous, especially along the northeast corridor of the East Coast. Tunneled systems are under construction in Washington, D.C. and are being planned for Atlanta, Buffalo and Baltimore. Near surface tunneling is defined for this paper as being that in which the crown is 100 feet or less below ground surface. For Rosslyn Station, the total cover ranged from 52 to 70 feet. The rock cover, however, ranged from 40 to 50 feet which is slightly less than the station height and about two-thirds of its width. Rosslyn Station (Fig. 1) is the only station excavated completely in hard rock in the Virginia portion of the 98.5 mile Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (WMATA) rapid transit system. The station site, oriented in a north-south direction beneath a main thoroughfare and flanked by multistory office buildings, was fixed by the need to serve a dense population center at a specific location and geologic conditions were a secondary consideration in siting. There was no previous underground rock excavation in the Washington Metropolitan Area of the size and scope of Rosslyn Station that offered a practical case history guide to the geologic conditions and excavation problems to be encountered. GEOLOGY The regional geology of the Washington Metropolitan Area is divided into two physiographic provinces by the northeast trending Fall Line (Fig. 2). "14.1. INTRODUCTION1The boilerplate of an agreement is not a single provision, but a series of provisions that are expected in “every agreement”. They are sometimes also referred to as the “lawyer’s provisions”. Many businessmen consider the boilerplate to be superfluous and, to some extent, window-dressing by the lawyers – even legalese. They will often offer advice to the effect that it can “pretty well be ignored”. Such advice could not be more wrong.Most boilerplate provisions are essential parts of every agreement. Some may be part of a “standard package” and may have little relevance to the agreement at hand, but these are the exception rather than the rule. The exceptions should not be treated as justification for giving all these provisions short shrift. The boilerplate should receive the same review, consideration, and negotiation as the provisions that set forth the business deal. It is often these provisions that make the deal work or that are turned to at the time of disputes. If they are inadequate, as they sometimes are (unfortunately, some draftsmen are also loath to review or update their standard boilerplate provisions or to tailor them to the deal at hand), they can create problems, rather than offer solutions. Such problems can be costly and time-consuming for the parties to address. Inadequate or incomplete provisions may ultimately be one of the reasons for the parties to turn to the courts to settle their differences. On the other hand, good boilerplate provisions can help keep them out of the courts.One of the principal objectives of an agreement should be to provide procedures, or mechanics, for implementing agreed principles and for the parties to follow to settle their differences, real or perceived, without going to the expense and disruption of a lawsuit. An agreement should aim to keep the parties away from the courts, not serve as a springboard to the courts. It must nevertheless be acknowledged that, if there is a major falling-out among the parties to an agreement, the chances are that, however carefully the provisions of that agreement have been negotiated and drafted, the parties will end up before the courts or some other adjudicating body."

Field investigation of surface subsidence events associated with both active and abandoned underground coal mines in the United States has established criteria that enable the prediction and classification of mine-related subsidence. The key was establishing the role of geology in all types of subsidence and the recognition of beam subsidence in specific geologic settings. The classification is based on overburden thickness, variations in stratigraphy, topography and mine plan. Types of subsidence are Pit, Room, Sag, and Beam. Pit subsidence is associated with three geologic settings: shale overburden, seasonally wet unconsolidated overburden, and perched water table in unconsolidated overburden. Room subsidence occurs where the roof across the width of the room fails to the surface and a shallow depression develops. Sag subsidence develops where the pillars are failing in conjunction with roof failure. Overburden thickness is generally greater than 150 feet. Beam subsidence can occur in all terrains. It is associated with retreat mining and room and pillar mining where pillar crushing or pillar compression has taken place and barriers are left inplace. They occur as beam arch or one-sided beam subsidence. Beam arch failure occurs where mining has taken place on both sides of a coal barrier. One-sided beam failure is associated with retreat mining moving from a barrier towards the entry in hilly topography. This type of subsidence occurs where a hard, thick, rock unit is acting as a bridge supporting the overburden and outcrops on the hill side.

The Tsugaru Tunnel, located on the Honshu island approach to the Seikan Tunnel, is 5,880 m long and has a "Shinkansen" cross section of 90 m2 area. The geological formation through which the tunnel passes consists of very soft rock most of which is unsolidified sandstone belonging to the Neogen. The permeability coefficient is in the range of 10-2 to 10-4 cm/s and being water bearing with a high ground water level, the ground is unstable and subject to soil outflow phenomenon. Kajima Corporation, undertaking the Futamata Construction Section (1,420 m long), excavated the tunnel by the upper half heading method with side pilots employing the following countermeasures to cope with these severe conditions.

"Damping behaviour of aluminite particulate reinforced ZA-27 alloy metal matrix composites processed by compocasting method is studied. The weight percentage of particulate reinforcement is 0,1,2,3, and 4%. A dynamic mechanical· analyzer is used ·to measure the damping capacity and dynamic modulus at the natural frequency of the specimen over a temperature range of 30°C to 300 °C both in the heating and cooling cycle. The damping capacity of the material is found to increase with increase in temperature and weight percentage of aluminite reinforcement although this is accompanied by a decrease in dyliamic modulus.The damping capacity and dynamic young's modulus exhibit a sharp decrease in their values around 300 °C a8 ZA-27 alloy undergoes a first order phase transition in this region which is confirmed by Differential scanning calorimetric studies. Several damping mechanisms have been evaluated theoretically for the material under study. The damping capacity at low temperatures is attributed primarily to coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch induced dislocations and high intrinsic damping of the matrix. At higher temperatures the damping capacity is attributed to ZA-27/aluminite interface, phase transformations and thermoelastic damping.IntroductionMetal matrix composites. (MMCs) offer designers many added benefits, as they are particularly suited for applications requiring good strength at high temperature, good structural rigidity, dimensional stability, and lightweight [1-5]. At present, the usage of ceramic particles as reinforcement in MMCs has attracted considerable interest from scientists and engineers. The MMCs show substantially improved elastic modulus, strength, stiffiless, and tribological properties with low coefficient of thermal expansion compared with the unreinforced matrix material."

IN 1942 the Bureau of Mines began to develop the Kroll process for use in the large-scale production of titanium. Titanium and titanium alloys are now commercial metals. These metals are relatively expensive, but It is now evident that they will have important industrial uses and that in many instances these will be related to their remarkable corrosion resistance. This bulletin presents the known corrosion properties of titanium and its alloys in useful form. In marine environments titanium is highly resistant to corrosion and does not pit, or undergo crevice corrosion, stress corrosion, or corrosion fatigue. Titanium is also highly resistant in many salt solutions, including most chlorides. It is very resistant to corrosion in nitric acid solutions. It is also resistant to white fuming nitric acid. However, it may react violently with red fuming nitric acid. In phosphoric acid solutions titanium has rela¬tively good resistance to corrosion, but it has less resistance to sulfuric acid and still less to hydrochloric acid solutions. Titanium corrodes very rapidly in hydrofluoric acid Solutions. It is very resistant to corrosion in many organic chemicals. However, it has only moderate resistance to formic acid solutions and poor resistance inn oxalic acid solutions. Titanium does not corrode in dichloroaretic acid but, corrodes rapidly in 100 percent trichloroacetic acid at 100° C. Titanium is resistant to barium, calcium, magnesium, ammonium, and sodium hydroxides. Titanium is inert in wet chlorine, bromine, or iodine gases. However, in dry chlorine gas titanium reacts rapidly enough to ignite. It also reacts rapidly with dry bromine gas, but, it is resistant to dry iodine gas. When titanium is exposed to red fuming nitric acid solutions with high nitrogen dioxide content and low water content, it corrodes, undergoes stress-corrosion cracking, and becomes pyrophoric. This occurs more readily with some titanium alleys, such as titanium-8 percent manganese. A fresh titanium surface immersed in water or in an aqueous solution and in contact with an oxygen-rich atmosphere under sufficientt pressure is unstable and will ignite spontaneously. Inherently an active metal, titanium has a tendency to become less active in environments containing oxidizing agents such as air, oxygen, chlorine, or ferric, cupric, or platinic ions. Titanium is more noble than most structural metals in roost, environments and its excellent corrosion resistance is generally not, affected by contact with these metals. However, some of the other metals corrode faster because of contact with titanium. Titanium undergoes anodic polarization readily, so that even when it is the less noble member of a galvanic couple it may corrode less because of the contact. Titanium alloys often have corrosion properties and electrochemical characteristics similar to those of commercially pure titanium. Titanium alloys containing noble metals, zirconium, molybdenum, vanadium, tantalum, or copper sometimes have better corrosion resistance than pure titanium.

"IntroductionTHIS PAPER deals with chemical and mineralogical changes in wall-rocks associated with pitchblende mineralization in the Gold-fields area of Saskatchewan. The localities at which the rock specimens studied were collected, and descriptions of the various rock-types referred to, are given in a previous paper by the author (5).The geological field work upon which this paper is based was carried out while the writer was employed by the Eldorado Mining and Refining Company during the summers of 1948, 1949 and 1950. The laboratory work§ consisted largely of quantitative spectrographic analyses for both major and minor elements, supplemented by an examination of 250 thin sections of both altered and unaltered rocks.Character of the AlterationHydrothermal alteration, with associated pitchbende mineralization, is widespread in the Goldfields area of Saskatchewan. The most intense alteration is restricted to the immediate vicinity of fault or breccia zones, but large areas are affected to a minor extent.In detail, the relationship between alteration and pitchblende mineralization is complex, as individual veins do not in general have separate alteration halos. Pitchblende generally occurs in gash-like calcite veins or stringers in wide, fractured zones associated with faulting. Large, lenticular and tabular masses of slightly to intensely altered rock occur in the same wide fracture zones as the mineralized veins. However, vein deposition appears to be-long to a later fracturing period, after hydrothermal alteration was more or: less completed. Generally, the veins transect and are confined to highly altered rock, but on the other hand many highly altered zones intersected in diamond drill-core are barren of mineralized veins."
