The permeability and flow capacity in unsaturated media is investigated by the Bureau of Mines for application to in situ copper leach mining at the Cyprus Casa Grande mine site. Moisture retention properties are derived and combined with scanning electron microprobe data to characterize the mineralogy, texture, pore size, distribution, and permeability of the host rock. Finite element modeling is used to derive a saturated permeability, ambient degree of saturation, and assess various injection-recovery schemes. Recommended design modifications for optimization of solution distribution and maximum recovery from the rock matrix requires either (1) the injection pressures on the order of 1500 psi and recovery wells operating in a suction mode, or (2) performing permeability enhancement, through rubblization. By producing a maximum block diameter of 4 m, injection pressures can be reduced to 500 psi with improved recovery and containment of solutions.

"Traditional geostatistical modelling methods are difficult to apply to heavy-tailed deposits because the extreme positive skew of the grade distribution leads to bias. The focus here is on an innovative method of modelling the high-grade population by conditionally simulating discrete volumes (nuggets) of gold with marked Poisson and Cox processes. Capping and other ad-hoc manipulation of the assay data is not required; however, an intensity map for the point processes is required. The method is demonstrated on a dataset from an epithermal deposit and demonstrates an improvement in reducing smearing and controlling the skew of the grade distribution.RÉSUMÉ Les méthodes traditionnelles de modélisation géostatistique sont difficiles à appliquer dans des gisements dont la distribution de la teneur est à queue lourde car l’extrême asymétrie positive de la distribution de la teneur génère des biais. Dans le présent article, l’accent est mis sur une méthode novatrice de modélisation de la population à haute teneur par la simulation conditionnelle des volumes discrets d’or (pépites) au moyen de procédés marqués de Poisson et de Cox. La limite d’utilisation et d’autres manipulations ad hoc des données ne sont pas requises; toutefois, il faut une carte des intensités pour le processus ponctuel. Many transmission towers, high-rise buildings and bridges are supported by piles. These structures may be subjected to large lateral loads. Therefore, experimental investigations on model piles under lateral loads were conducted in uniform dry sand. Small-scale model tests were carried out considering the influence of pile length, pile diameter, sand density, roughness of pile surface and vertical load on the lateral resistance of a pile. Furthermore, the effect of pile load eccentricity (e/L) on the ultimate lateral resistance was studied. Investigations, of the influence of various parameters on the magnitude of the coefficient of subgrade reaction (nh), were also performed. It was found that the lateral load capacity of piles increases with increase in pile length, pile diameter, pile surface roughness and increase in the sand density. The results also showed that the coefficient of horizontal modulus of subgrade reaction, (nh), decreases with deflection increase. From the results, the coefficient of subgrade reaction for a smooth pile embedded in medium dense sand would decrease by (134%) when the lateral pile head deflection (yg) changes from (2% to 5%) of pile diameter.

The Bureau of Mines has examined the operation of an oxygen sensor manufactured by the City University, London, England. The sensor produces a current proportional to the oxygen concentration by reacting oxygen at a nonconsumable cathode. The sensor design is unique in that the primary mode of oxygen transport to the cathode is by diffusion through a capillary, The sensor using this design has a stability of 0- to 0.02-pct reading change per day over a 4.7-month test, small temperature coefficient of 0.29-pct reading change per °C, and small pressure coefficient of 0.34-pct reading change per 1,000-ft altitude change, If this sensor were incorporated into an oxygen detector or monitor, this would be a distinct improvement in electrochemical-type oxygen analyzers and would be useful to the mining industry.

British Coal's Selby Complex is the newest producing mine in the United Kingdom. The reasons behind its origins, planning and design are explained. Some detail is given of equipment used, with the emphasis being placed on the unique features of its layout. The entire project has been planned and constructed over many years and the design has consequently changed, principally in response to the geology of the coalfield and improving technology. In spite of many totally unexpected difficulties, the mine, which is not yet in full production, has the highest productivity in the United Kingdom.

Gold with minor associated copper mineralization in the area of what is now the Bougainville porphyry copper deposit has been known since the 1920s and was probably known in German colonial times, pre- 19 14, although no records persist other than a reference by Stanley (1922) to copper specimens from Kieta that he saw in Rabaul. Stanley did not at the time believe that they came from Kieta. Gold was first discovered at Kupei by Jack Comb in 1929 and the Kieta Goldfield was proclaimed in May 1930. In December 1932, the Tapu Reward Claim at Moroni - the site of the Bougainville Copper concentrator, was pegged by C.W.M. Evans who prospected up river from the West Coast. The Pumkuna (Panguna) Reward Claim on the site of the subsequent porphyry copper deposit was granted in February 1934 to G.A. Myers. n May 193 1, the Kupei Reward Claim was transferred to Bou- gainville Gold Options NL and later reverted to Jack Comb and then the Bougainville Syndicate, as did the Pumkuna and Moroni claims. Most of the interested parties had come from the Edie Creek rush on the New Guinea mainland. In 1935, N.H. Fisher, the geologist in Rabaul for the New Guinea administration who later became director of the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources in Canberra, reported on the three gold areas. Norm Fisher described the gold and copper mineralization and its habit in great detail and this report had a major influence on the events leading to the discovery in the 1960s. Gold production up to the Japanese invasion probably did not exceed $50,000 in value. Half a ton of copper-gold ore from Kupei was sent to O.T. Lempriere's in Sydney for assay in the early 1930s.

The implementation of NAFTA in January of 1994 was expected to have small but beneficial effects for the Mexican economy, mostly through increased investment flows. Mexico's mining industry was especially likely to benefit, as mineral investment funds would be diverted to the now safer Mexico and away from similarly endowed but more risky Latin American mineral economies. The results of the past two years have shown that it is governments and macroeconomic factors that influence investment flows, rather than the fine-tuning of trade flows through so called "free-trade" agreements.

The deposition of ceramic materials onto substrates is of special interest in the development of surface related technologies. Research interest has been placed on using thermal plasma as the deposition method, specifically inductively coupled plasmas. Many different modifications to the same basic principle of deposition have been performed through out the materials research community. Such a technique may have many advantages over more conventional techniques, such as high deposition rates, high surface area coverage, clean energy source, no contamination from electrodes and operation near atmospheric pressures. Materials deposited vary from simple oxide systems like TiO2 to more complex structures like ternary oxides and nitrides. This paper reviews recent developments relative to the inductively coupled plasma deposition of thin films.

THERE is today no proven continuous mining machine that can be used under all the varying conditions found in most bituminous coal mines. During the last five years, however, both the machines and methods of using them have been improved. Coal operators can now exercise a fair degree of selectivity, except those who must struggle with thick and hard partings and operate in seams less than 40 in. thick. It must be realized, then, that more than one type of continuous miner may be used advantageously in the same coal mine. Although this appears to violate the standardization generally sought after, the gain can more than offset added maintenance and, to a lesser degree, operating problems.

In an effort to develop a novel flash ironmaking process, the chemistry of selected slags was investigated. In different ironmaking processes, the molten bath (iron-slag bath) is expected to be in contact with gas atmospheres of H2/H2O, CO/CO2/H2/H2O, and CO/CO2. The latter was investigated to allow comparison with the blast-furnace conditions. The slag composition was selected to resemble that of the blast furnace with CaO/SiO2 in the range 0.8 to 1.4. The temperature range was 1550 to 1650°C. The oxygen partial pressure was maintained in the range 10-10 to10-9 atm. The effect of water vapor on the chemistry of the slag as well as the equilibrium reactions involving the slag has been studied for the first time. H2O dramatically affects the chemistry of the slag and strongly affect the phase equilibria in the slag as well as the equilibrium distribution of elements between slag and molten metal.

"Collecting property of two hydroxamic acid collectors have different type of nonpolar structure to hemimorphite has been comparatively studied via monomineral flotation test, and the reason causes different collecting performance has been discussed from the view of relationship between molecular structure and collecting property. The flotation tests results show that C5-9 hydroxamic acid has an unbranched linear alkyl nonpolar group shows better collecting property to hemimorphite than cyclohexyl hydroxamic acid which has a naphthenic nonpolar group. FTIR detecting results show that the adsorption type of collector adsorbed on hemimorphite surface is chemical adsorption. Calculation results of polar group’s geometric structure parameters, polar group’s electron density distribution, octanol-water partition coefficient (logP) and molecular frontier orbital energy show that the key factor caused different collecting property of two collectors to hemimorphite is the logP; unbranched linear alkyl nonpolar group is more conducive than naphthenic nonpolar group to make hemimorphite particle more hydrophobic.INTRODUCTIONZinc-bearing mineral recovered from lead-zinc ores is the main source that people can obtain zinc resource from nature. However, natural sulfide ores are currently getting depleted steadily for the primary zinc source. In order to satisfy the future demand of zinc resource, there is an obvious recognition that the recovery of zinc oxidized minerals from the ores is a crucial alternative (Hosseini & Forssberg, 2007; Navidi Kashani & Rashchi, 2008).But the fact that can’t be ignored is the flotation of zinc oxidized minerals is much more difficult than that of zinc sulfide minerals, which is mainly due to the flotation characteristics of these zinc oxidized minerals such as lower selectivity and higher reagent consumption, as well as complex and variety of lead-zinc ores. Presently, there have been many various beneficiation technologies used for recovering zinc oxidized minerals and dealing with ores for recovering metallic zinc such as flotation and hydrometallurgy (Abkhoshk, Jorjani, Al-Harahsheh, Rashchi, & Naazeri, 2014; Önal et al., 2005). But from an overall perspective, flotation is the most common method used for the beneficiation of zinc oxidized minerals, and there have been extensive investigations conducted on the flotation of zinc oxide ores (Ejtemaei, Gharabaghi, & Irannajad, 2014). Until now, the most well-known method used commercially for the flotation of zinc oxidized minerals is sulfidization with sodium sulfide and flotation with a cationic collector of amines containing from 8 to 18 carbon atoms. However, a major problem for this method is the large amount of fines and slime results in the increase of reagent consumption and promotes the phenomenon of slime-coating. For preclude this negative effect, the de-sliming and processing optimization is indispensible (Peres, Borges, & Galery, 1994; Salum, de Araujo, & Peres, 1992)."

The pilot scale testing of Australian coals for their NO, emissions was carried out at the ACTC to investigate the influence of coal properties, furnace conditions and different NO,, control strategies on NO,, emissions. The NOx emissions for the Australian coals tested were found to vary over a wide range and primarily depended on combustion temperature and excess oxygen conditions. These coals did not exhibit any fundamental difference in NOx levels to other world coals. Under similar combustion conditions, the conversion of coal nitrogen to NO. was found to be best correlated with coal rank parameter, R, max per centage. The use of staged combustion as a control strategy was shown to reduce their NOx levels by 56 - 77 per cent.

THIS review of the past year's progress in iron and steel metallurgy presents examples of only a few of the interesting or important accomplishments made in the United States. In the field of iron ore concentration increased attention was given to the study of the more difficultly separated wash ores and some progress was made in tabling. One difficulty with the table, in concentrating iron ore where the percentage of concentrate in the feed is large, has been the removal of fine silica from the thick layer .of concentrates in the cleaning zone. One company has -Made an important contribution toward the solution of this problem by an extension of the well-known plateau principle. By a special riffling of the plateau section of the table, the concentrates are crowded together. This action forces the fine silica to the top of the bed in the cleaning zone, whence the cross-flowing currents of water -can wash it into the middling product. Some work has been done on the application of froth flotation to the concentration of iron ores. Laboratory experiments were made at the Colorado School of Mines in which hematite was, successfully floated. Using oleic acid as a frothing and collecting agent and sodium carbonate as the conditioning agent, a high recovery of rich ,concentrate was obtained. The Mount Isa copper deposit is located adjacent to the city of Mount Isa, Queensland, and lies within a series of Palaeoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic Superbasins. The deposit is hosted almost entirely within the Urquhart Shale (US), a unit of the Mount Isa Group sediments and part of the Isa Superbasin. The copper mineralisation is separated into two distinct orebodies: the X41 mine (1100 and 1900 orebodies) and the Enterprise mine (3000 and 3500 orebodies). The orebodies are situated in the hanging wall of the major controlling structures, the Paroo Fault, which has juxtaposed older basement Eastern Creek Volcanics against the younger Mount Isa Group sediments cf 1655 ± 4 Ma. Conjecture remains over the exact timing of this thrust event. However, it is clear that inflections on the Paroo Fault have a close association with the orebodies and are an important structural feature in the mineralisation of the Mount Isa copper deposit.The life-of-mine is reducing steadily and new geomechanical modelling techniques were employed to target structurally controlled mineralised zones in three dimensions. Following a structural review of the mine using underground mapping, structural data and core shed observations, a conceptual 3D mine model was constructed utilising existing data modelled in MineSight®. This conceptual model included all the main lithological units and structures. The conceptual model aimed to test the effects of deformation on the main lithological and structural components of the system and attempted to highlight areas of anomalous stress and strain that may indicate a higher likelihood of fluid focusing and mineralisation potential. This project was focused on testing the latter stages of a D3 event (NE–SW compression) and D4 event (SE–NW compression), which are considered to be responsible for the current location of the mineralisation.The fully coupled 3D finite element analysis models resulted in highlighting anomalous patterns of stress and strain and subsequent fluid flow as a result of the two deformation events. The NE–SW D3 simulation provided the best correlation with the known distribution of mineralisation. This event also indicated several areas on the Paroo Fault and within the US that have potential to host further areas of mineralisation. The SE–NW D4 simulation provided less of a correlation with known mineralised zones. However, this event may have been responsible for post mineralisation re-mobilisation of copper on a relatively small scale. Areas of maximum shear strain, shear stress, volumetric strain and fluid flow correlated well with areas of minimum principal stress and provided the best overall match with known mineralised zones. Furthermore, several additional highlighted areas provide a high potential for further discovery of copper mineralisation. Recent exploration drilling north of the Enterprise mine 3000 orebody, utilising geomechanical modelling as part of the targeting criteria, intersected copper mineralisation, providing further validation of the modelling results.CITATION:McLellan, J G, O’Sullivan, R, Miller, B and Taylor, D, 2014. Reliable and accurate furnace bath level data during the melting process is invaluable for good decision making and furnace optimization, while obtaining such information rapidly and safely on a regular basis is of paramount importance. This paper shows how a melting process problem was identified as a concern, how a solution was sought and how a real-time measurement system was tested by simple modification to an existing temperature sampling manipulator. Also how, with furnace power on or off, taking reliable hot heel, fill and running levels could be used to assist melting control, aid decision making and improve safety.

The role of solutionizing conditions within the T6 heat treatment of the cast Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloy with micro-additions of Zr-Ti-V was assessed in terms of their influence on microstructure and mechanical properties. As a solution treatment, a single step process at 485 and 510oC and a two-step process at 510 and 525oC for varying time intervals from 0.5 to 9 h, were examined. In all cases, solution treatment was followed by isothermal aging at 150oC for 100 h. The microstructural analysis showed that the solution treatment changed the eutectic silicon morphology from needle-like, present after casting, to spherical shape in the T6 state and that the extent of changes was strongly influenced by temperature and time. The Cu- and Mg-rich phases completely dissolved during solution treatment while the Fe-containing phase, Al8Si6Mg3Fe, remained partially in the microstructure. The Ti, V and Zr containing phases, Al13Si2Ti3Zr and Al3Si26FeTiV10, present in as-cast state, were partially dissolved during solution treatment, reducing their size by 10 - 48%. The studied alloy reached the maximum ultimate tensile strength of 335 MPa and yield stress of 303 MPa for two-step solutionizing with a total time of 4.5 h. It is concluded that the two-step solution treatment resulted in higher tensile properties than the single-step process.

The Boddington Gold Mine (BGM) is managed by Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd (Worsley) and is located 110 km south-east of Perth, Western Australia. The gold mine, which has operated since mid-1987, was originally constructed to treat 3 Mtpa of gold bearing oxide ores, has subsequently been expanded to treat 7 Mtpa and is presently one of the largest gold producing operations in Australia.During 1990 a Supergene/Basement Plant was constructed to treat 250 000 tpa of copper supergene and hypogene ores and basement ores which contain significant gold grades and which are encountered at the lower levels of the existing oxide orebody. The SupergeneBasement Plant has the versatility to treat a wide range of ore types, producing both gold bullion and copper-gold concentrates. It is a stand-alone facility adjacent to the existing 7 Mtpa gold plant.

The Roy Hill Project is an independent integrated port, rail and mine development in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The bankable feasibility study for the project was completed in January 2011 by Roy Hill Holdings Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hancock Prospecting Pty Ltd. The Project will deliver 55 Mt/a of premium quality iron ore to a rapidly growing market with a mine life of over 27 years. This study is based on exploiting a 1.2 Bt bedded resource of microplaty haematite-rich Marra Mamba, from which 562 Mt of reserves has been delineated to date. A further 1.1 Bt resource of detritals and low grade bedded is proposed to be mined once the bedded high grade resource is depleted. Roy Hill lump and fi ne ore products will compete strongly with other Pilbara products. As a low cost producer, Roy Hill is on track to capture four per cent of the global seaborne traded iron ore market. The project decision to proceed is targeted for Q2 2011 to enable first ore on ship by Q2 2014.
