Since the beginning of the computing age, technical software packages have not been developed to address only programming specialists but have been dedicated to process engineers. For process analysis, BRGM is developing and commercializing three packages: ? sampling software: ECHANT 2.0 for Windows ? material balance calculation: BILCO 2.0 for Windows ? steady-state simulator for plant design, adaptation and optimization: USIM PAC 2.1 for Windows This paper deals in a first part with the main features of these three packages. In a second part, advanced models are presented for SAG/ AG mills and flotation columns. An industrial case of application is shown for each of them.

A new watersoluble binder for mineral ore pellets has been developed by the sulfonation of bituminous materials. A highly effective binder for iron ore pellet making is obtainable from bituminous materials produced in the hightemperature cracking of crude oils. This paper deals with production process and basic properties of this binder as well as new applications in the field of iron ore pelletizing.

Electrolysis of titanium carbide and a material consisting of titanium, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen as soluble anodes in Used electrolytes was investigated by the Bureau of Mines for the preparation of crude titanium metal. Tests made in all-chloride electrolytes showed only a low recovery of titanium as well as a substantial volatilization of titanium trichloride (TiC13) when present in the electrolyte. Electrolysis at 750° to 850° C in a mixture containing 85 percent NaC1-15 percent potassium floutitanate (K2TiF6) yielded as high as 91 percent recovery of titanium from titanium carbide and 62 percent recovery of titanium from the titanium-carbon-nitrogen-oxygen material. Problems associated with the preparation of crude metal by fused-salt electrolysis are discussed. The crude metals produced from both anode materials were electrorefined in a sodium chloride-titanium chloride (NaCl-TiC12) electrolyte, and ductile titanium metal was obtained.

Resource Engineering and Development, Inc. is designing and building a portable 150 to 225 TPD, flotation-cyanide leach plant with unitized, skid-mounted components. This plant design, with its portability, low capital investment, and high recovery of silver and gold from many partially oxidized ores, is well suited to treat many small, high-grade deposits, old waste dumps, and old mill tailing piles. A description is given of flotation and/or cyanide leach tests run on about 17 partially oxidized, newly mined ores; waste dump materials; placer slimes; and old mill tailings.

Although much may be learned about the economics of cold weather operations by studying successful mining ventures in southern and central Canada, it is the purpose of this article to extend the study by considering only permafrost areas. Geographically this means most of the country north of the 60th parallel. In this area, at the present time, only five Canadian companies are carrying on routine and successful mining operations on a year-round basis. However, there have been some score of unsuccessful ventures, and a number of properties in the development stage show promise of being producers. Problems of cold weather are worthy of study. It may be pointed out that successful mines in this area face problems of isolation and costly transportation as well as cold weather. To reach valid conclusions, consider the development of a mythical mineral deposit located on the 65th parallel in the heart of the barren lands; problems of isolation and transportation will be ignored.

Depending upon which of two letters describing the theme of the session I chose to honor, the subject choices because either one or three. They were: "Applied Research and Exploration and Discovery" or "Applied Research in Exploration and Discovery." The final choice; to partially ignore both of them. That minor difference in meaning may be appropriate here, inasmuch as very minor research/exploration differences may also have profound impacts on discovery. To further set the stage, I consider myself an Industrial Minerals geologist, and more specifically primarily associated with basic construction materials crushed stone and sand & gravel. My remarks will apply primarily to those materials. Therefore, when the discussion instructions included emphasis on beneficial aspects (to name a few): "drill target definition; elimination of ore potential; ore forming environments; alteration studies, and isotope analysis," problems became apparent. Evidently, and although this was a form letter, the drafters of that letter had no idea what was involved in research for a construction materials source. My task may be great.

Multiple seam mining and its associated problems are very serious in Southern West Virginia where poor planning or lack of knowledge in seam interaction often results in complete loss of coal properties. Several measures have been proposed to alleviate the interaction prob¬lems under various multiple seam conditions, but few of them are spec¬ific in terms of mining plan. Two parallel approaches are adopted for this paper. One is field investigation which consists mainly of mine site visits and gathering of data. The other is the two-dimensional finite element simulation of mine workings using the data gathered as input. Two typical cases which represent the past and present multi¬ple seam mining practice in West Virginia were investigated. Much attention is focused on the interaction problems experienced and the important parameters controlling interaction. Several key parameters controlling interaction in multiple seam mining were analyzed. Proper mining plans, by which the interaction problems can be minimized, are proposed for the individual cases after a better understanding of the interaction mechanism was realized through finite element analyses.

This report describes laboratory studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the effectiveness of 10 additives to inhibit the self-heating of coal. Aqueous additive solutions were applied to a bituminous coal with a high spontaneous combustion potential, and the minimum self-heating temperatures (SHT's) of the dried coal-additive mixtures were determined in the Bureau's adiabatic heating oven. The relative effectiveness of the additives was determined by the observed changes in the minimum SHT's of the mixtures, or by the time required for the sample temperature to reach 150" C, compared with the untreated coal and a coal-water blank. Sodium nitrate, sodium chloride, and calcium carbonate were found to be the most effective inhibitors, followed by ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, calcium chloride, ammonium chloride, sodium acetate, and potassium chloride. Two additives, sodium formate and sodium phosphate, promoted the self-heating process. Differential scanning calorimetry experiments on the coal-additive mixtures showed that reactions occurred between the coal and some of the additives, but these reactions did not influence the self-heating process.

A new hydrothermal field with massive sulfide deposits was discovered in 2004 at 16º 38.4?N, 46º 28.5?W on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Hydrothermal signals had already been recorded from bottom waters and sediments in this area during cruise 19 of R/V Professor Logatchev in 2000. This site was revisited during the 24th cruise of R/V Professor Logatchev in February 2004 when samples of massive sulfides were recovered and video records of the deposits made. The basalt hosted hydrothermal field is situated at a depth of 3700-3750 m, 600 m above the inner floor on the eastern slope of the rift valley. Structurally, the new field is located at the intersection of a deep along-axis marginal fault and a transverse sub-latitudinal dislocation. Six sulfide mounds as well as associated metalliferous sediments were mapped (sampled and/or recorded by video profiling) within the hydrothermal site. The largest ore body, 500 x 225 m, in the southern part of the field consists of small blocky talus and relics of sulfide chimneys partly covered by iron oxyhydroxides. The chimneys are 1-5 m high. The southern and western boundaries of the massive sulfide deposit have not yet been delineated. More than 1,100 kg of massive sulfides and stockwork mineralization were sampled at 7 sites by dredge and TV-grab. Everywhere, iron sulfides were the principal minerals present. Pyrite in association with lesser amounts of chalcopyrite occurs in both massive sulfides and stockwork mineralization. Of particular interest is the chalcopyrite-siliceous stockwork where silicified and chalcopyritized basalts are intruded by a network of chalcopyrite veinlets. These zones could be fairly thick and enriched in base metals. Sphalerite was very rare.

Controlled thermolysis of gold(I) complex, [Au(C13H27COO)(PPh3)], at 180 °C for 5 h under an N2 atmosphere affords the new type of monodispersed spherical gold nanoparticles capped by myristate and a small amount of PPh3 ligands (average diameter 23±1.5 nm), in spite of no use of solvent, reducing agent and stabilizer. Much attention has been paid to the preparation and structure determination of transition metal nanoparticles, because of their widespread use in technological applications.1 In general, the chemical reduction of metal salts and organometallic complexes2 by the use of reducing agent is carried out to prepare gold nanoparticles. In some cases, a large amount of solvent and stabilizers such as surfactants,3 polymers4 and ligands5 are used to prevent agglomeration of particles and control the particle size. For instance, Brust et al. reported a two-phase reduction of AuCl4 - by NaBH4 in the presence of dodecanethiol as stabilizer to prepare gold nanoparticles.6 On the other hand, O?Brien et al. recently reported an one-phase preparation of gold nanoparticles by the reduction of AuCl4 - by NaBH4 in the mixture of tri-n-octylphosphine oxide and octadecylamine which act as both solvent and stabilizer, but this procedure also needs reducing agent.7

"Water drawn from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta provides water supply to 66 percent of California’s population and supports the state’s agriculture industry. The existing through-Delta water system is outdated and unreliable with environmental risk to some fish and wildlife species. The Bay-Delta Conservation Plan (BDCP) has been established to environmentally retrofit and modernize California’s water delivery system through the Delta by restoring habitats, constructing new diversion points in the north Delta and providing a means to transport water supplies under the Delta, rather than through sensitive natural channels.Under BDCP, the Delta Habitat Conservation and Conveyance Program (DHCCP) has developed several alternatives to convey water from the Sacramento River in the north to the existing pumping facilities in the south Delta through an isolated conveyance system. The new conveyance system would become an integral part of the State Water Project (SWP) and the federal Central Valley Project (CVP) by transporting water to the export pumping plants for each of these projects. The DHCCP is managed by the California Department of Water Resources (DWR), while state and federal water contractors provide technical support to the program.The initial conceptual study efforts on the overall program commenced in 2007 and examined various options for the proposed conveyance system. Several conveyance alternatives were analyzed at that time. The Conceptual Engineering Report published on Oct. 1, 2013 identified the modified pipeline/tunnel option (MPTO) as the preferred alternative to be included in the BDCP environmental documents. MPTO includes three river intakes and pump stations along the Sacramento River, various sizes of pipelines and tunnels, junction structures and two forebays that are capable of delivering up to 4 million gpm (9,000 cfs) from the Sacramento River to the SWP and CVP. The river intakes are located near Hood in Sacramento County approximately 64 km (40 miles) from Clifton Court Forebay (CCF) in Contra Costa County. This route would cross portions of Sacramento, San Joaquin and Contra Costa counties. Figure 1 depicts the configuration of the MPTO alternative."

Copper smelter dust (CSD) is a byproduct of copper smelting and is composed of considerable amounts of copper values and also contaminants (like silica and mullite). Silica in CSD forms Siloxane, a low density material, which is difficult to separate from the aqueous phase during solvent extraction. The need therefore arises to reduce/remove the aluminosilicates for better grade and recovery of copper in subsequent processes. This paper reports the use of two types of centrifugal gravity concentrators, namely Knelson (KGC) and Falcon (FGC), for upgrade of copper in CSD. The aim was achieved by an initial characterisation (Particle Size Distribution (PSD) and mineralogical analysis), together with Density Separation (DS) experimentation, premised on a hypothetical density difference between copper oxide and silicon/aluminum oxide. Wet screening results showed that 88.52 % of CSD particles were in -53 μm fraction. Further PSD study using laser diffraction showed the -53 μm fraction to be composed mainly of 26 μm, 22 μm and 18.5 μm fractions. Mineralogical analysis showed copper to occur mainly as oxides (24.34 wt%), but also as sulphides (7.95 wt%), and a substantial amount of aluminosilicates (42.97 wt%) were identified. Density of CSD was determined as 2.83 g/cm3. Copper content (18.02 wt%) in CSD was upgraded to 35.94 wt% in concentrate using KGC. In conclusion, the results showed good convergence between hypothesis and experiment. Additionally, it was also concluded that KGC performed better than FGC for copper upgrade in CSD. The present paper is based on a term project for final year undergraduate students, requiring them to evaluate a process for producing silicon from rice husk. The traditional method for production of silicon involves carbothermal reduction of quartz in electric arc furnaces at temperatures exceeding 2000 °C. The technology consumes a considerable amount of electrical energy as well as fossil fuels, resulting in significant CO2 emissions. A flowsheet for production of silicon metal from rice husk is laid out in this paper. The technology will consist of combustors, which will generate steam using the rice husk biomass, power generator, and electric furnace for reduction of the rice husk. Materials and energy balance calculations presented here indicate that such process can be operated independent of external electricity.

During the past several years, Raymond Kaiser Engineers has prepared numerous studies concerning the technical and economic feasibility of coal exporting facilities in the western United States. Perhaps the most striking conclusion to be drawn from these efforts is that many people underestimate the complexity of the highly competitive, dynamic coal marketing system which includes coal loading terminals as an essential but relatively low-cost link in the energy production and delivery chain. The title of this paper, "The Status of Western United States Coal Ports - An Economic Assessment," should not delude anyone into thinking that the future of western U.S. coal- exporting ports has now congealed into a well- defined economic plan. As this paper will demonstrate, the situation is complex and more dynamic than ever and promises to remain so into the late 1980's.

The industrial hygiene and safety aspects with internal combustion engine in mining systems is truly interdisciplinary and encompasses many fields such as mine ventilation, exhaust gas and particulate analyses, mine atmospheric environment monitoring, mathematical modeling of generation, dilution and dispersion of pollutants in ventilation systems, and engine testing and approval. Mathematical models of the dilution and dispersion of diesel exhaust contaminants can be useful only if these models can be validated. In this research report, experiments that were specially designed for the above purpose are described. These experiments were conducted in the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Safety Research Coal Mine, in Bruceton, Pa. On the basis of this study, the data collected, and further review of available literature, it is concluded that mathematical models of dilution and dispersion are useful tools for mine ventilation planning. Additional objectives of this study about which conclusions and recommendations are reported here include: (a) evaluation of mine atmosphere contaminant monitoring systems; (b) optimum sampling site locations; (c) model sensitivity and error analyses; (d) computer coding of mathematical models; and (e) development of a diesel bibliography. While an extensive bibliography on diesels is provided in this report, Volume II of this final report has 511 references.

Fly ash from four sources and in certain proportions was shown to assist chemical coagulation of turbid water and settling of chemically induced floc. Fly ash reduced the time required to form the first visible floc, promoted more uniform flocs about 2 mm in diameter, and increased the mean settling rate of floc particles. Also, the addition of fly ash produced denser sludges than those obtained with alum alone. Final turbidities were independent of fly ash particle size and carbon content. Optimum proportions of fly ash additive are given.

The purpose of the Lower Lea Valley Cable Tunnel project is to relocate the overhead power lines circuits, which currently cross the proposed site for the 2012 London Olympics in East London. This was the first contract to be awarded as an Olympic project and is on the critical path for the proposed Olympic Park as the construction of the Olympic village, stadium and other venues cannot begin until the tunnels are complete, the cables installed and the overhead power lines removed. The tunnelling works for the scheme include two parallel tunnels between Hackney and West Ham. Each tunnel is approximately 6 km in length. One tunnel is 4.15 m ID and connects the National Grid substations. The other is 2.82 m ID and connects the EDF Energy substations. The tunnels were constructed through mixed ground using four earth pressure balance tunnel boring machines. These were driven simultaneously from two drive shafts within a single site. The 12 km of main tunnels were constructed within a year from start to finish, with completion in June 2007. The shafts range between 6 m and 15 m ID. These were constructed using a combination of caisson sinking and underpinning techniques. Dewatering was adopted to suit the groundwater conditions.Other works include the design and construction of the head house buildings, cable and ventilation culverts, mechanical and electrical (M&E) installations and all associated works. In addition to the above, a further 1 km of tunnel and two shafts were added to the project scope connecting the EDF Energy tunnel to the substation at Bow. These additional works provided further challenges to the project to ensure that these works were constructed within the program constraints for the 2012 London Olympics. This involved refurbishing one of the tunnel boring machines from the main EDF Energy tunnel drives and relaunching the machine to construct the Bow tunnel. The Bow tunnel was constructed within two and a half months, with the tunnel boring machine breaking through in August, ahead of schedule. The main challenge presented by this project is the program constraints. This project outlines the requirement for team work between the client, stakeholders, contractor and designer in order to provide program certainty. A close working relationship between the contractor and the designer is required to provide value engineered, time-saving solutions to mitigate the risks associated with the design and construction program.

"The Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States since 1939. Projects were set up on only the most promising properties.A preliminary examination of the Mount Hope mine was made in January 1943 by the Bureau's engineers, who recommended exploration by diamond drilling.The mine is in the unsurveyed portion of T. 22 N., R. 1 E., Mount Diablo base and meridian, south-central Eureka County, Nevada, 25 miles by road north of the village of Eureka. A partly graded and Graveled secondary road connects the mine and Eureka on U. S. Highway 50.Extensive sampling was done by the Bureau in February. 1943. Core drilling from the surface was started on March 15, 1944, and completed on April 2, 1545. The 16 holes drilled totaled 7,215 feet. The mining company also did extensive underground core drilling from April 21, 1944, to January 4, 1945. This report gives the results of core drilling supervised by the Bureau of Mines.The drilling program was designed to explore for extensions of the mineralization exposed in the mine workings. As a result of drilling, additional ore was found, and it is believed that this project has fulfilled the purpose for which it was planned.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization, of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to na¬tional security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples of ore and performs beneficiation test. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assists director.With respect to this report special acknowledgment is due to Charles W. Merriam of the United States Geological Survey for his interpretation of the Mount Hope mine Geology and his cooperation throughout the project; Col. Leverett Davis, former lessee of the property; K. This paper discusses why Argyle Diamonds adopted thickened tailings disposal in 1985 and how the system was developed over the next seven years. A wide ranging review of the thickened tailings disposal system and the tailings deposit it was producing was carried out during 1992 and 1993. The results of that review led to the abandonment of thickened tailings disposal at Argyle because of serious concerns about the stability of the resultant tailings deposit. The exposure to the risk of liquefaction and an assessment of the consequences if this happened to the thickened tailings deposit are shown. The criteria for selecting the new tailings disposal strategy are then described. The final section of the paper discusses the management strategies that have been put in place. These are designed to: ò reduce the risk posed by the thickened tailings deposit to an acceptable level; ò safely store tailings to the end of mine life; ò produce a land form that can be decommissioned to the satisfaction of Government regulatory bodies.
